ISSUE 172 September 2019
READ ONLINE AT: www.inandaroundmag.co.uk
Welcome
to the September issue of IN&AROUND!
It’s officially the first month of autumn, providing the ideal time for us to reflect on a very eventful summer for County Durham residents. We’ve got the lowdown in this shiny new issue of IN&AROUND, as well as details of what’s still waiting to be embraced as leaves fall from the trees. In August, Durham Constabulary co-ordinated the annual Chester-le-Street Activity Week, where hundreds of families enjoyed activities including bouncy castles, face painting and, at the town’s Leisure Centre, free swimming. We were one of the proud sponsors of the event and report about it on page 26. As for what to do this month, why not forgo conkercollecting in favour of a cinema trip instead? Fresh additions to two established franchises, The Lion King and Fast & Furious, are still screening. Our content manager Gavin Lenaghan has cast his critical eye over both films on pages 40-41. Even if you aren’t one for either cats or cars, you can check out our latest ‘What’s On’ listings on page 42 - and we invite you to consider utilising services of any of our much-appreciated advertisers featured in this issue. We’ll be back next month!

Celebrating Roald Dahl’s 103rd birthday What hopscotchy news! This month, on 13 September, the legendary writer Roald Dahl would have been celebrating his 103rd birthday - and, undoubtedly, celebrating it by fondly looking back on decades spent delighting children with heartwarming, even iconic stories like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, The BFG and The Fantastic Mr Fox.
in various countries across the world, and Matilda, which now outsells of all of Dahl’s other works.
Roald Dahl was born on 13 September, 1916 in Cardiff to Norwegian immigrant parents, and his life took in not only prolific bouts of writing but also a high-flying - both literally and metaphorically - career in the Royal Air Force during World War II. This article should be a razztwizzler for you...
Dahl often wrote his children’s stories from the POV of a kind-hearted child, while the villains were typically adults who would hate and mistreat children. Children’s book critic Amanda Craig has commented: “He was unequivocal that it is the good, young and kind who triumph over the old, greedy and the wicked.”
From a flying ace to an ace writer
A creator of new words
Dahl’s Norwegian family heritage never entirely left him; he was actually named after Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian polar explorer. Dahl’s childhood experiences went on to inspire stories he wrote as an adult; his childhood memory of gobstoppers, for example, led him to create the “Everlasting Gobstopper” featured in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
In case you were wondering where the words “hopscotchy” and “razztwizzler” came from earlier in this article, they happen to be just two of the many new words Dahl created just for his literary work. “Hopscotchy” means cheerful, while “razztwizzler” refers to something wonderfully exciting or enjoyable.
In November 1939, Dahl - then in his early twenties - was recruited to the Royal Air Force. There, he climbed the ranks, starting out as an aircraftman and eventually reaching the rank of acting wing commander. His wartime adventures inspired his first published piece of writing, a story titled A Piece of Cake and placed in the pages of The Saturday Evening Post. Becoming a big name in children’s fiction Of course, Dahl really made his name with his stories for children - and even his first children’s book, The Gremlins, took inspiration from his time in the Royal Air Force. The story, first published in 1943, was about mythical but mischievous little creatures blamed for issues with RAF aircraft. Other notable stories which Roald wrote for the children’s market over the next few decades included The Witches, a dark fantasy novel about child-hating witches secretly living

Maybe this 13 September would be a good time to enjoy some “flavoury-savoury” chocolate or sit in front of the “telly-telly bunkum box” to enjoy one of the televised adaptations of Dahl’s work. Frankly, you probably don’t need us to clarify what those two particular phrases mean...

Second phase of Chester-le-Street flood prevention scheme begins Chester-le-Street’s Market Place has been very much occupied as a construction area since work began on a multi-million flood prevention scheme there earlier this year. However, work on the scheme’s second phase has recently commenced. Though the area of Chester Burn has traditionally been prone to flooding, the £6.2m scheme is aimed at curbing the likelihood of this occurring in the future. The second phase will see Durham County Council opening a 90m stretch of culvert running under the Market Place. This move will create an open channel which should help to make the County Durham town’s flooding issues a thing of the past. Paul Wilkinson, construction programme and project manager at Durham County Council, declared: “We are making great progress and the work is on schedule to be completed on time in spring 2020.” Mr Wilkinson added: “We would like to thank local businesses and residents for their continued support and patience during the works.” Other work lined up for the second phase includes putting new footpaths and seating into 18 | IN&AROUND
the open culvert. Landscaping work in the area is underway, not only to contain floodwater resulting from severe storms but also to foster a haven for wildlife. Meanwhile, a pipe currently cutting through part of the culvert at Cone Terrace is set to be relocated further downstream. This will not only expand the culvert’s capacity but also let floodwaters freely run downstream toward the River Wear. Much work has already been carried out in the Market Place, which itself has been moved closer to Front Street and onto a refurbished “red carpet” area. Fresh planting has taken place here in a bid to increase the area’s organic appeal. Once the Market Place has been fully revamped, it will host Chester-le-Street’s markets on Fridays and Saturdays, from 9am to 4pm. Durham County Council has recruited two new operators, The Craft Fair Company and Events2gogo, to run these markets. The council is funding the Market Place overhaul jointly with the Environment Agency and the European Regional Development Fund. It is expected that work on the project will be concluded by next spring.

Business Spotlight.
Decor Walls & Flooring In a few sentences, how did Decor Walls & Flooring come about? When we started selling cladding in 2004, we had a limited range of ceiling and wall panels. As the business developed, changes in panel design and technology have made great leaps with regards to quality, fit and finish. Our range has expanded from a few staple items to a vast range covering many categories. You recently changed your name to Decor Walls & Flooring from Decor Cladding Centre; what motivated this rebrand? Our previous name was relevant to our core product Decorative PVC Cladding. We have supplied cladding for thousands of bathrooms in our 15 years of trading but like the panels, we have come a long way. The industry has evolved rapidly with major changes in HD printing – better quality panels – easier fitting – and the products moving beyond the bathroom, to more rooms in the house. The low maintenance and easy fitting benefits of PVC panels are equally applicable in the kitchen, the bedroom as well as on feature walls. When your brand no longer represents your products and services, it’s time for a name change. How would you sum up your customer base? Our customers range from the DIY enthusiast to a customer looking to engage the services of a fitter to install our latest solid-core panels. A standout feature of decorative panels is the ease of fitting, you can panel a bathroom in a few hours opposed to a few days with tiling. Why should local homeowners consider interior cladding over other decorative options such as paint or wallpaper? Wall panels are incredibly easy to install with no fuss or mess, once installed they are very easy to clean and maintain and will last for years to come. They also add an insulating layer to your room and can cover any surface irregularities on existing walls. Due to the robust nature of wall panels redecorating will come down to you wanting a new style rather than replacing tired and worn paint or stained grout. Your bathroom will look as fresh as the day it was installed for many years to come. Why should customers choose you as a source of interior cladding over other companies? We have an excellent customer service team and we sell at very competitive prices – we only buy from the very highest quality manufacturers in the UK, Europe and China and all of our products come with a minimum 10-year product guarantee. Our product development team ensures that we always have the latest products available in this fast-developing market. What options do you enable customers to choose from when it comes to wall and ceiling panels? We have a huge selection of wall and ceiling panels to choose from transforming any room instantly – from contemporary, tile, brick, marble, mosaic, stone, wood, mineral and sparkle.
22 | IN&AROUND
What factors do you think homeowners should think about when trying to decide on the right wall and ceiling panels for their property? We ask our customers to think first and foremost about practicality, what value are panels going to bring to your home. All our wall panels are quick to fit and even faster to clean, class 1 fire retardant, 100% waterproof and with a tongue and groove interlocking system that provides a flush finish. A highly practical wall covering for your room. When deciding on type of panel to choose, style is a personal preference and our website and showroom help customers to visualise their room with many different types of panel. As your name indicates, you also provide flooring. What makes the flooring solutions that Decor Walls & Flooring provides the best around? We specialise in LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tiles) Flooring; It’s the perfect flooring solution for any room in the house, particularly bathrooms and kitchens – due to it being 100% waterproof. LVT is the perfect floor covering to go with PVC panels as it has the matching properties; easy to fit, easy to clean and a fraction of the cost of traditional floor tiles. What else do you think potential customers of Decor Walls & Flooring should know about the company, that they might not know? If you have been putting off your new bathroom due to cost or how long an installation will take, please visit our website or showroom. Traditionally a new bathroom was a significant investment in both money and time, with the advances made in panel and flooring technology a beautiful bathroom is more affordable and fitting is in a timescale that makes it a practical option. If you have any questions; how to measure, how to fit or finishing touches please do contact us, we have been here for 15 years and are happy to help with your project.

Subsequently, it’s also a big month for us at Findley Roofing & Building – although this month is even more special than usual. Our popular #FindFindley competition, which you can find over on Facebook, is now offering a range of prizes for the best and most frequent sightings of our vehicles all over the North East of England. We’ve got mugs, pens and toy Findley vans to give away to the most eagle-eyed of Findley spotters, and you may get a glimpse of us on TV, too. If you spot one of our advertisements on primetime ITV, grab your camera or mobile, take a photo and submit your entry on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/findleyroofing.
To the right, you can see a recent entry by one of our most avid young Findley fans, 8-year-old Finley from Washington, who is already well on the way to owning his own replica Findley van. However, in between keeping your eyes peeled for us in transit, or on TV, do ask yourself when the last time you checked your roof was – and give us a call for a FREE roof inspection by one of our professionals. Not only will a roof check provide you with a little extra peace of mind as we approach winter – but you’ll get a good shot of one of our vans when we arrive at your home too! #FindFindley | 0191 417 3422

Your questions, our solutions.
Does your website work for you and your customers? These days, your website might not just be the first thing, but the only thing your customers see of your business. This makes its design, functionality and efficiency absolutely paramount – but also easy to lose track of once your site is live. Do you feel the pages reflect your business and the services you provide? Would you be impressed were you visiting the site for the first time? If you’ve scored 8-out-of-8, congratulations! Lambton Estate luxury family homes now available to buy in Chester le Street A collection of bespoke homes within Chester le Street’s Lambton Estate are now available for sale. Lambton Estate has always been private - despite a short public period in the 1970s. Earlier this year, it was revealed the Lambton family are offering the chance to share the estate’s environment with a wider audience who will eventually move into the area. The development will comprise 106 three, four and five-bedroom homes along with one, two and three-bedroom apartments. These have been designed in keeping with the longstanding heritage of the estate by architect Ben Pentreath. Andrew Somerville, sales director at Miller Homes North East, said: “Without

a doubt, Lambton Park will be an incredibly special place to call home, from the exclusivity of the estate, its fascinating heritage and prime location, to the bespoke housetypes designed specifically for the estate.” The family homes are said to offer living areas, ensuite bathrooms, a ground floor study, double garage and feature bay windows. Homeowners will have access to 15km of seasonal walks, as well as retail and community space as funding from this development of new homes is supporting conservation works across Lambton Park. This also includes the restoration of Lambton Castle and its stables, plus Lamb Bridge.

Places to go...
MANCHESTER
T
he original plan was to go to Jodrell Bank, the radio astronomical observatory in Cheshire, walking distance from a little country station called Goostrey, on Tuesday 23rd July. Unfortunately, on 7th July, Jodrell Bank was designated a World Heritage Site and a big festival weekend was arranged which meant that the site was closed for clean-up on the day of my planned visit. This would have used an Advance Purchase ticket with TransPennine to Manchester, and a day return to from Manchester to Goostrey. Since Advance Purchase tickets are not refundable (although the date can be changed before time of travel), I decided to stick with the date and have a day in Manchester with Daniel whose presence reduces my fare by 1/3 using the Family and Friends railcard. Note the child you travel with does not have to be your own. The journey was spent in part using the free wifi to determine things to do in Manchester, using the web address below. We arrived at Manchester Victoria in the middle of a signal failure at nearby Piccadilly, so baled out of the train there. Lucky we were not going to Goostrey after all. Victoria station was once one of the worst in the north of England so it is good to see it all restored and looking smart. We had an early lunch at Yo! Sushi in the Arndale Centre using my Tastecard, and found that the National Football Museum, formerly free, now charges £10 for adults and £5 for children. (I have subsequently discovered they accept my National Art Pass for free admission.) So we headed instead to the Northern Quarter to the Greater Manchester Police Museum in Newton Street, open free but only on Tuesdays, for a fascinating couple of hours on crime and punishment. Handcuffs were demonstrated, we were placed in the cells and sat before the bench in the court room. We explored the area around Oldham Street and Tib Street and found a pleasant little pavement café amongst the vintage

shops on Oldham Street in the Northern Quarter. I introduced Daniel to Afflecks, the vintage emporium which is a Manchester institution. Piccadilly Gardens was full of children playing in the fountains on a hot day. For the afternoon we took a tram to Media City to visit the Imperial War Museum North (IWMN) at Daniel’s suggestion, and stayed there until closing watching videos and learning about conflicts from the First World War to the present day, including the Yemen and Syria. No dry as dust exhibitions here. We would have visited The Lowry art gallery in Salford, but it closed at 1700, same time as the IWMN. So we took the opportunity of a meal at Café Rouge, once again using with my Tastecard before taking the tram direct into Piccadilly and our train home. Even better, owing to trouble affixing a second unit to our train at York and then a trespasser on the line in Durham, we arrived back at Chester-le-Street 45 minutes late which means we are entitled to a delay repay payment of half the ticket value. That can go towards a trip to Jodrell Bank later in the year. You can only pack so much into a day and so we missed all the commemorations of the Peterloo Massacre of 16 August 1819, when peaceful protest about parliamentary reform led to Hussars charging the crowd and killing eleven and wounding over 500 people. There are no less than seven free exhibitions about the massacre running throughout September in the excellent Manchester libraries.

FILM REVIEW:
THE LION
KING
So, the 2019, Jon Favreau-directed edition of one of Disney’s greatest late-period traditionally animated classics. There are surely only two broad ways to interpret this one: it’s either a new milestone in aesthetic sophistication for animated films on the big screen, or too much of a daunting technical extravaganza to remember to inject that allimportant idiosyncrasy and soul. Evidence for the prosecution of this photo-realistic, but not remotely ‘live action’ epic – every last detail of the on-screen animation instead being rendered in dazzlingly intricate CGI – comes in the form of animal mouth movements that aren’t always in synch with the words they’re speaking, together with the largely slavish manner in which the familiar classic is recreated, scene by scene. But of course, the rather cautious shot-for-shot reconstruction does at least bring the benefit of preserving much of the power of the original story. Oh, and it would be fair at this point to concede that the new Lion King does incorporate a few new helpful scenes and two, albeit forgettable new songs in a manner that scarcely leaves any visible seams
for those somehow unfamiliar with, or scarcely able to remember, the 1994 original. While rather more dramatic change can naturally be observed in the voice cast, another sign of Favreau’s sometimes overly respectful deference to the original – although, for sentimental reasons as much as anything else, perhaps not so much on this occasion – is the return of James Earl Jones as the voice of the elder lion king, Mufasa. Otherwise, the new-for-2019 cast is a tastefully chosen one for the new era, with JD McCrary and Donald Glover taking on the roles of the young and grown Simba respectively, and Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner impressing – albeit, stopping just short of show-stealing – as slow-witted warthog Pumbaa and his rather sharper-quipping meerkat companion, Timon. Any appraisal of this new Lion King, however, must surely always return to what is presumably this version’s selling point: the annoyingly persistent religion in 21st-century cinema of utterly exacting realism being the greatest of creative virtues. This notion just doesn’t quite work in the case of an overly diligently produced remake that remains, after all, animated; a striving for immaculate photorealism that is also at once resoundingly unreal. Nonetheless, for both kids and ‘big kids’ of any age who simply don’t care for such a fundamental contradiction and the on-screen flaws that consequently arise, Lion King-2019-style does still offer its own charms.

The Fast and the Furious franchise gets a spin-off in Hobbs & Shaw that complies dutifully with the general trajectory of the series’ development since the 2001 original, of ever-more preposterous and improbable action far transcending the basic fast-car template. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham trade not-always-successful oneliners as American special agent Luke Hobbs and former British military operative Deckard Shaw respectively, in a predictable buddy-comedy dynamic as they seek to save the world from the designs of a cyber-genetically enhanced terrorist played by Idris Elba, who relishes his limited time on screen. As overlong as it is at 135 minutes, though, Hobbs & Shaw serves just fine as the relatively mindless entertainment that we’re accustomed to from the Fast & Furious stable.

What’s on
September Apollo Apollo Pavilion, Peterlee
So much has Victor Pasmore’s Apollo Pavilion divided opinion through the decades, it’s amazing in some ways that this unmistakable geometric piece of architecturecum-sculpture has even made it to its 50th birthday. Yet it has – and for a few days only late this month, environmental artist Steve Messam will be celebrating that fact by building a striking temporary installation around it. Visit ‘The Pav’ at Oakerside Drive between 19th and 22nd September to see the result.
The Life and Rhymes of Benjamin Zephaniah Gala Theatre Durham
Born and raised in the Handsworth district of Birmingham – which he has described as the “Jamaican capital of Europe” – and subsequently a friend of Nelson Mandela and a fighter in the 1980s race riots, Benjamin Zephaniah has gone on quite the journey to reach his present status as one of Britain’s most celebrated poets. He’ll be at Gala Theatre Durham on Friday 6th September as part of his first tour in eight years; you can purchase tickets for £18, or £15 concession, at www.galadurham.co.uk.
Heritage Open Days Various locations around County Durham
England’s largest festival of history and culture returns from 13th to 22nd September, once again enabling those around the country to discover architectural treasures close to their door that often cannot be accessed at any other time of year. All manner of tours, events and activities will be on offer at venues across County Durham, and it’s all free; simply visit www.heritageopendays.org.uk to see what’s opening, and what’s happening, near you.
Chester-le-Street & District Flower & Vegetable Open Show Durham County Cricket Club

The entry charge is 50p for each entry up to a maximum of £20, with entries being benched from 8am to 11am and the show opening to the public between 2pm and 5pm. An Evening with Bradley Wiggins Tyne Theatre & Opera House, Newcastle upon Tyne
It used to be unthinkable that a British rider could win the Tour de France until Sir Bradley Wiggins achieved it in 2012 – but of course, there’s so much more to “Wiggo” than simply sporting glory. Britain’s most decorated Olympian will be in Newcastle on Saturday 28th September to share exclusive tales, prized memorabilia and career highlights in a unique and intimate live setting. Point your browser to www.eventim.co.uk to buy tickets from £32.50.
Michael – The Magic of Michael Jackson Sunderland Empire
No one made pop quite like the King of Pop, and there’s no touring tribute to the iconic superstar in the UK today that is bigger or arguably better than this one.
