It’s a Knockout
23rd June 2018 Enter a team of 10 people Team age groups: 8-13yrs • 14-16yrs • 17+yrs (each team must consist of the above age groups - they can not be mixed age groups)
On Saturday 23rd June 2018, Newport Rugby Club’s Minis and Juniors section will be hosting a day full of fun, thrills and spills for the whole family. The day will follow the theme of the classic 1960’s TV show, It’s a knockout. Teams compete against each other on inflatable obstacle courses, with foam and water galore, where teams will be challenged to come up with the most inventive fancy dress so entertainment is guaranteed! At the end winning teams in age groups 8-13yrs, 14-16yrs and 17yrs plus will be awarded with glittering prizes. The organisers are inviting teams to participate in the “It’s a Knockout” event, to help raise funds to renew the lease on the Forton Road site.
COMES TO NEWPORT
Teams will consist of 10 participants at a cost of £30 per person or £300 per team, which can be raised through sponsorship or paid individually to the Team Captain, a deposit of £150 must be paid to secure team entry. Please note that all bookings are on a first come first served basis and interest has already been high, so book early to avoid disappointment. Not wanting to leave anyone out, there will also be a mini obstacle course for children under 8 years, as we wanted all ages to be included in this community event. Entries will be taken on the day and there will be prizes up for grabs. Participants and spectators will also be treated to additional activities and entertainment throughout the day and into the evening including live music, bouncy castles, stalls, food and drink a plenty. Organiser Amanda Weston said “We’re so excited to be brining such a large scale community event to Newport. We have been promised a day of excitement and entertainment from the company running the competition and look forward to seeing teams from across the area fight it out for the prizes. We’re hoping to raise lots of money on the day to go towards the lease, whilst at the same time having lots of fun and bringing the local community together.”

FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE
The Shrewsbury Arms
High St, Albrighton, Nr Wolverhampton WV7 3LA
T: 01902 373003
The Shrewsbury Arms is located on the High Street in Albrighton and is just a five minute drive from J3 of the M54. The grade II listed building is full of character and retains many original features. The well established pub and restaurant has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. We had decided to visit on a Thursday evening which is steak night, the special steak menu has a great selection to choose from, all steaks are sourced from award winning local butchers. You can also order from the main menu if you prefer. If you order two meals from the steak menu you will receive a free bottle of wine (includes house white, red or rose), which is an amazing deal. The Shrewsbury Arms have just launched their new seasonal menu with a range of exciting new dishes but they have retained some of the old favourites on there too, including their famous hanging kebabs. As well as the new food menu they have also just launched their new 'Gin & Cocktail' menu with a great choice of cocktails and a wide range of gins to choose from and plenty of mixers to make your perfect G&T. We were seated in the main dining room which is very elegant with its high ceilings, central fireplace and piano in the corner. The tables are well spaced out and there was nice relaxed ambience. While we looked through the menus we ordered some drinks, Nik had a pint of Shropshire Lad and I decided to try one of the many gins available off the new menu, I had the Ultimate Summer Cup. For starters Nik chose the Black Pudding Bon Bons (ÂŁ5.75) and I ordered the Duck Spring Roll (ÂŁ6.75). Nik's bon bons were walnut sized balls of quality black pudding, covered in breadcrumbs and deep fried giving a lovely golden shell, the crispy balls
6
FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT were served with a cocktail stick to allow easy dipping into the tangy homemade ketchup.
My delicious freshly made Belgian waffle was soft and warm and was served with a lovely butterscotch sauce, strawberries, raspberries and butterscotch ice cream.
My spring roll was extremely well presented and I couldn't wait to tuck in. There was a generous filling of soft tender duck which was incased in a lovely light soft pastry which had a slight crispness on the outside, the chilli sauce and sliced fresh chillies added a nice bit of sweetness and heat - a really great dish.
The caramelised sugar topping on Nik's Creme Brule was the right side of golden and broke easily to reveal the lovely smooth vanilla custard beneath. It was served with two freshly made shortbread biscuits and the largest strawberry I've ever seen. A classic dessert and the perfect end to a great meal.
I ordered my main from the steak menu and chose the 8oz Fillet (£22.50). Nik chose a steak dish but this was from the main menu, he ordered the Fillet Steak Pappardelle (£17).
Friday Fish & Fizz nights are very popular at The Shrewsbury Arms, every Friday from 6-10pm - with an additional Fish menu plus great discounts on Prosecco and Champagne, its a great way to start your weekend.
My fillet steak was served with chunky chips, a flat mushroom, slow cooked tomato and onion rings. You could also choose a sauce to accompany your steak, including peppercorn, blue cheese or Diane sauce. My steak was cooked to perfection, exactly how I had ordered it. The onion rings were huge and had a light and crispy batter.
Bottomless Prosecco Afternoon Tea can be booked any day between 12-4pm and is served with unlimited prosecco at just £24.95 per person. Fixed priced lunches are served Monday to Friday (12-5pm) with a choice of 2 course at £10.95 or 3 courses at £13.95.
Nik said the home-made pappardelle was perfectly cooked and the mushrooms were soft and meaty, the strips of aged beef fillet were melt in the mouth tender and plentiful. The silky-smooth parmesan cream sauce finished the dish off perfectly.
Traditional Sunday roasts are served every Sunday from midday until 10pm and the full main menu is also available on Sundays. There are plenty of reasons to visit The Shrewsbury Arms and I have already booked my next visit with some friends, as I can't wait to try the afteroon tea with bottomless prosecco!!
Although we were both very full we decided to squeeze in a dessert. Nik opted for the Vanilla Crème Brule (£5.50) and I chose the Belgian Waffle (£5.50).

Recipe
CHOCOLATE FONDANT PUDDINGS Don’t overcook these divine chocolate puds or the centres will set and you’ll lose the gooey molten middle. You can prepare them a couple of hours in advance and bake them just before serving. Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes
INGREDIENTS: • 175g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing • 175g caster sugar • 175g good quality plain chocolate, broken into pieces • 3 large eggs • 50g plain flour • Cocoa powder and icing sugar, to dust • Whipped cream and strawberries, to serve
1. Preheat the oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas mark 5. Lightly butter four 300ml capacity ramekin dishes (see Tip) and sprinkle with a little of the caster sugar. 2. Place the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Cool for 5 minutes. 3. In a large bowl whisk the eggs and remaining caster sugar together for 5 minutes until very thick, pale and creamy, then whisk in the chocolate mixture. Sift over the flour and gently fold in using a metal spoon. 4. Divide the mixture between the four dishes. Place on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes until the puddings have risen and are just set on the outside – the tops should still wobble when pressed lightly. Run a knife around the edge of the puddings and turn out onto plates. Dust with cocoa powder and icing sugar and serve immediately with whipped cream and strawberries.
TIP If you don’t have ovenproof ramekin dishes, you can use small metal pudding basins or ovenproof teacups. 10

Going Green
Easy ways to cut down on waste and save some cash If you want to live a greener lifestyle, you’ll want to get the whole family on-board. Children are often more inspired by videos than conversations, so it’s worth searching YouTube for short clips about plastic waste, climate change, recycling tips and so on. When everyone is feeling a bit more motivated, ask each member of the family to make some simple pledges, such as: • Saying no to plastic straws. • Refilling water bottles rather than buying drinks when out. • Using a reusable bag for shopping. • Switching lights off when leaving an empty room. • Only buying second-hand clothes, toys and so on for six months. • Checking whether rubbish can be reused or recycled before binning it.
Cutting food waste
Did you know that the average family wastes £470 worth of food every single year? Some waste is difficult to avoid, particularly if your children are fussy eaters, but much of it can be easily avoided with a bit of careful planning. Simply making a list of meals for the week, and using that to do the shopping, can help to cut down on waste. Try to plan meals that use up any leftover ingredients. So, if you need half an onion for one recipe, for example, plan another meal to use up the other half. Freeze leftovers straightaway if you’re not going to have chance to eat them, whether it’s half a stick of fresh ginger or a bowl of bolognese sauce. Silicone muffin pans are ideal for freezing sauces. Once frozen, pop the individual portions into a re-sealable bag or tub to keep in the freezer and use for later.
12
AS A FAMILY
Try not to overfill kids’ plates; food that’s been mixed together is more difficult to serve up again.
Cutting plastic waste
There are lots of easy ways to reduce the amount of plastic you use, from swapping sandwich bags for Tupperware containers to choosing unpackaged fruit and vegetables. Ecoegg’s Laundry Egg is a reusable, natural laundry detergent that cleans clothes about as well as a non-bio detergent. You’ll cut down on plastic bottles and save a fair amount of money, as the egg works out at just 3 pence a wash – see www.ecoegg. com. Could you make a pact with other parents to buy second-hand or eco-friendly birthday presents? You could club together to buy vouchers for a day out for example, or just pick up a toy or book from your local charity shop. When you do buy new, choose toys that can be easily reused, and that don’t come with lots of plastic parts or packaging. If you’ve lost pieces from a favourite game or toy, check the manufacturer’s website, as lots now sell spare parts.

Books
BE HAPPY WITH A BOOK
Whether you love curling up with a psychological thriller or prefer biographies, enjoy flicking through a cookbook or need business advice, we’ve got just the book to keep you and your e-reader happy.
Ultimate Fit Food – Gordon Ramsey
Planning to get a bit fitter before the summer? Gordon Ramsey’s latest book might help. It’s split into three sections, each of which offers a range of dishes to promote general wellbeing, achieve weight loss or provide fuel for work-outs. There are recipes for everything from healthy snacks and breakfasts to impressive main courses, and plenty of treats are included too. The emphasis is on dishes so delicious you’ll almost forget they’re good for you.
The History of Bees – Maja Lunde
The History of Bees tells the stories of three people, all connected by bees. In 1851, William is attempting to build a revolutionary beehive to bring honour and fame to his family. In 2007, George is struggling to keep the family bee farm going. Almost 100 years later, Tao is enjoying a rare day off from her job hand-pollinating fruit trees, when her son is taken seriously ill. The History of Bees was a surprise international bestseller last year and is ideal for fans of dystopian fiction.
Anything You Do Say – Gillian McAllister
A split second decision has lasting implications for the protagonist in this tense psychological thriller. Late at night, believing that she’s being followed, Joanna lashes out, pushing her pursuer down a set of concrete steps. Does she call an ambulance, or walk away? Both scenarios are then explored. Ingenious, original and fast-paced, this is perfect for fans of Gone Girl and Girl on a Train.
The Paying Guests – Sarah Waters
It’s 1922, but the roaring twenties have yet to reach the quiet corner of London where Frances and her mother live. Frances has resigned herself to a life spent looking after the family home, but the arrival of lodgers Lilian and Leonard Barber reawakens her life, energy and passions. Paying Guests was published in 2014 and was named ‘Fiction Book of the Year’ by The Sunday Times, for good reason. A modern classic, it’s beautifully written, with believably flawed characters, plot twists and a building tension that’ll keep you reading ‘just one more chapter’ until late into the night.
How Not To Be a Boy – Robert Webb
Actor and comedian Robert Webb has turned his hand to writing, with great success. How Not To Be a Boy is part biography, part reflection on the expectations that are put on boys and men to act a certain way. Webb reveals his grief at losing his mother and his difficult relationship with his father, and ruminates on how trying to ‘act like a man’ has had a negative effect on his life. Through it all, Webb writes with his trademark humour, taking the reader from laughing out loud to blinking back tears in moments.
Start Me Up – Various
If you’re thinking of setting up your own business, take advice and inspiration from people who’ve done just that. Enterprise Nation is a website for small businesses and has recently released a free ebook. Start Me Up features stories from 100 entrepreneurs, including the owner of Cool Cold Brew, which will soon be available in Sainsbury’s, and the founder of the fastest growing baby food brand in the UK. You can download Start Me Up from the blog at www.enterprisenation.com.

Get Your Soil
INTO SHAPE time and money as well as being very ‘green’! Make a compost heap or bin, and don’t let the autumn leaves go to waste – instead turn them into leaf mould, a wonderful soil conditioner to improve the soil’s texture. Incorporating some horticultural grade grit or gravel will also help to improve the texture and performance of a heavy clay soil. It is important that you avoid builders’ gravel or grit, as this often contains salts or other materials which can seriously damage, or even kill, garden plants.
Plants and gardens need a lot of different things if they are to look their best, but one of the most fundamental needs of all is soil. And the better the soil, the better the plants will perform, and the bigger the flowers and the heavier the crops. So getting your soil into good condition and keeping it well looked after is key to great gardening. At this time of year there is still time to shape up your soil before the gardening season really begins in earnest. Frosty weather can be really useful. It may wreak havoc with some of your plants, but if you garden on a heavy clay soil it can save you a lot of work. If you roughly dig or fork over an empty bed or part of your vegetable plot, the large lumps of clay soil will be acted on by the frosts and will break down somewhat, making them more manageable in the process. Most soils can become badly compacted if you walk or stand on them when they are very wet – you literally squash the air spaces out, especially if the soil is clay or even slightly heavy loam. Try to avoid walking on the soil during or just after heavy rain, but if you really can’t avoid doing so use a few boards or planks as walkways to spread the load and so reduce damage to any one area. Forking a soil, as opposed to digging it with a spade, is generally best on a heavy soil as it is less likely to cause compaction. But whether you fork or dig, the soil surface usually ends up pretty lumpy. So grab a fork and re-fork the soil again, whacking the larger lumps to break them up further. A final raking will help to produce even smaller lumps on the surface and so get closer to that ‘fine tilth’ often described in gardening books. Adding bulky organic matter such as leaf mould, well-rotted manure or garden compost will help to feed the soil in a natural way, and also to improve its texture so that it holds just the right amount of moisture for as long as possible. There is still time to fork this in now, to improve the soil in time for this year’s new plantings and vegetables. You can create a great, free source of organic matter for your soil yourself and you’ll save a lot of
18
If your soil contains excessive quantities of small stones, or perhaps larger lumps of flint, you really should try to get to grips with it before you start to create the garden. Doing this before planting is SO much easier than attempting it once the flowers or vegetables are in place! Some stones are good, but even a lightly stony soil can make growing decent crops of root vegetables, such as carrots or parsnips, virtually impossible – they may taste delicious but they’ll often be forked or otherwise deformed. If clearing the soil sufficiently really is not practicable, then you’re probably best off investing in some raised beds so that you can fill them full of a stone-free soil. Manure can seriously transform a soil, adding both texture and food for the plants to grow healthily. Make sure that you bring in good quality manure, with as few additives as possible – not too many wood shavings for instance, as these can form a high percentage of stable manure and make it far less useful. If possible, view the manure in situ; the last thing you want to do is bring in manure which is riddled with weeds, especially the really troublesome ones like nettles, docks and couch grass. In recent years there have been problems with manure contaminated by the weedkiller used to control weeds in pastureland, which can devastate plants, often killing them. Try to source manure from someone local who you know, and can trust to tell you what chemicals have been used. Manure needs to be well-rotted before being used in the garden – ideally it should have sat in a heap for about two years. Green manures are a great way to feed your soil and improve its condition at the same time. They will also help to suppress weeds and protect the soil from erosion in a windswept spot. They work especially well on parts of the garden where you do not have plants growing year round – as when you use a green manure, you sow seed, allow the plants to grow and then incorporate them into the soil, where they rot down and release all sorts of useful materials. Check out what is available by looking in the seed catalogues and get sowing later this year – there are lots to choose from, including red clover, mustard, field beans, phaecelia and field lupins. Yes, there’s potentially a fair bit of work involved, but you don’t have to do everything suggested and anything you do will make a huge difference! Seeking Help
TO MAINTAIN GARDENS
With Spring just arrived, many older people will be seeking help to maintain their gardens.
The Help at Home team are dedicated to helping older people, and have a fully trained team of home support workers visiting older people as often as needed at a reasonable price. They can do a variety of tasks around the home including gardening, cleaning, the laundry and even help bake a cake, but also offer companionship and a friendly face.
Many of us are putting our minds to tending our gardens and looking forward to seeing the spring bulbs flowering and cherry trees coming into blossom. Gardens can be a source of escapism, an opportunity to connect with nature, but for many older people unmanageable gardens become a burden and a source of worry and frustration if they are unable to maintain them. Continuing to remain independent in their own home in familiar surroundings is preferred by most older people than residential care, however, as people get older they experience changes in their economic, physical, and social independence that become barriers to managing their own gardens and homes. Many people need assistance to maintain their independence, health, and well-being. There is support available, and not just from the handy-man around the corner or a company providing gardening services, but your local Age UK. Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin offer a Help at Home service. The charity supports over 1,100 older people across the county with those jobs around the home and garden that can often seem daunting for older people.
Offering this level of support for older people can increase independence and the ability to remain in their own home. The gardening service ensures older people are able to enjoy their tidy gardens, observe the wildlife and get around easily which also helps prevent falls and injuries. With trees, branches, overgrown grass, and bushes being cut and trimmed, it’s a safer and secure home environment. Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin also offer a range of other services giving piece of mind for families and friends that someone is looking out for their loved one and visiting regularly. Other services available through the charity include opportunities to socialise, keep active or pursue a new hobby or practical benefits advice, advocacy support and a wide range of information guides and factsheets. Overhaul
YOUR LAWN to the roots, making for better growth and healthier grass. Do this after you’ve mown the lawn. If only small areas are compacted, use a garden fork and drive it into the lawn every 4-6 inches or so, trying to get the tines of the fork to a depth of 4-6 inches as well. Once the tines are in the soil, gently ease the handle of the fork back and forth to enlarge each hole. You now have some drainage holes. If you mix up some sieved garden soil or loam with horticultural sand (about one part soil/ loam to nine parts sand) you can brush this mixture across the lawn and into the holes you’ve made. The result is a drainage system over those compacted areas.
It has rained so much in recent months and the ground has become so wet that there have been times when I’ve thought that my garden might be about to turn into a paddy-field! The flower and vegetable beds are starting to pick up remarkably well, but it is the lawn that seems to have taken the most obvious battering. Over-wet conditions can cause roots to die off and will reduce the oxygen in the soil. Worse still, any areas of the lawn that you’ve had to walk on, albeit infrequently, or over which you’ve had to move a wheelbarrow or other fairly weighty bit of equipment, will have become compacted or squashed. It may not be obvious but the air spaces that should be plentiful in the soil will have been dramatically reduced, and the heavier your soil is, the worse the problem is likely to be. So if you want your grass to be as green as it should be and ready for the summer use it’s likely to get, it’s time to get to work now. Check over your lawn mower and see to anything that needs sorting. If it’s too much to take on yourself, take it to a reputable outlet for a service as soon as possible – you’ll need it even more in a few weeks’ time! Once it is working well again, you’ll be surprised at how much quicker and easier each mowing session becomes. In most areas of the country grass will have started to grow quite a bit faster recently and so may need cutting. Make sure that you don’t set the blades too low for the first few cuts, as this will weaken the growth and make it more likely that weeds will start to invade. You can relieve some of the soil compaction to allow air down
22
If the soil in the garden is quite heavy or contains a lot of clay, the chances are that these last few months will have done a lot of damage and the whole lawn will benefit from aerating. For an enduring and even more useful effect, buy, borrow or hire a ‘hollowtime aerator’, either as a hand operated one, a machine or a mower attachment. This will actually cut cylinders of soil out of your lawn, and when filled with the ‘top-dressing’ mix above will result in much longer-lasting drainage channels. Moss might look good and green right now, but it tends to look miserable later in the year as it dries out and becomes brown. So apply some moss killer and then rake it all out after the time specified on the pack. It will make your lawn look worse initially, but allows more air to the roots of the grass plants and gives them more space to grow and spread too. Lawns that have suffered from serious waterlogging will really benefit from a suitable feeding regime. Poor growth and overwet conditions will have put these plants under a lot of stress. Whether you choose a granular or liquid feed, make sure that it is a spring lawn food, as this will be formulated specially to give the balance of nutrients lawns need now. If you do use a granular feed, ensure that you water it in unless it rains shortly after you’ve applied it. Walking on a very wet lawn soon wears it out and kills off grasses. Get these bare or bald areas sorted now and by the time the summer comes it won’t look like a patchwork. Roughen up the bare or thin areas using a rake and then sprinkle a suitable seed mix on to match in with the existing grasses. If you’ve not got many patches to sow, you can buy small patch repair packs to keep the cost down. Once all the work is done, and it may well take several hours in total (depending on the size of the lawn and exactly how damaged and waterlogged it was), try your best to keep off it for a few weeks to allow it to bask in all that pampering and take advantage of all the TLC and grow away really well. On Your Bike
Learning to ride a bike opens up a whole new world of fun and independence for children. Even babies and toddlers can join in the fun of a family bike ride, with a little help… Babies can start joining you on bike rides from around nine months old, as long as they can hold their head up unsupported. You’ll need to choose between a trailer and a front or rear bike seat. Child bike seats start from around £30. The more expensive ones usually have extra features, such as a five-point safety harness, rather than a three-point one. Some have backs that can be tilted for on-the-go naps. Front-mounted seats sit in front of you and attach to the frame. They sometimes have a shorter back than rear mounted seats, and usually have a lower maximum weight allowance, so they won’t last you quite as long. On the plus side, you’ll be able to see your child, which makes sharing a ride more fun. Some rear seats fit to a pannier rack, while others fit to the frame. You might find balancing is a little bit easier with a rear seat compared to a front one, and it should last you until your child is around four years old. Whichever type of seat you go for, you’ll need to check that it’s suitable for your bike and the weight of your child. Look for a seat with plenty of padding, a good safety harness and adjustable foot supports. Bike trailers are more expensive than seats, but you can pull older children, and often two at a time (plus picnics or shopping). Trailers usually have a cover, so your child will stay
30
dry if you get caught in the rain, even if you get soaked. You might struggle with a trailer on steep hills though, and you’ll need a garage or shed to store it when it’s not in use. It’s a good idea to visit your local bike shop to speak to a specialist adviser before you make any decisions. They’ll be able to recommend a trailer or bike seat that’s right for you, your bike and your child.
Cycling with young children Once your child is old enough to ride a 16” bike, you might want to progress from a seat or trailer to a Trail Gator or other tow bar. These attach your bike to your child’s, so you can pull your child behind you. They’re handy for when you fancy a longer ride than your child could otherwise manage. Some tow bars can be unclipped and folded down, if your child wants to ride on their own for a while. Your child’s bike might feel a bit wobbly when it’s being pulled, so tow bars aren’t suitable for children under around four.
Where to go Lots of roads have designated cycle lanes now, and there are plenty of traffic-free routes to explore too. The National Cycle Network offers 14,000 miles of bike-friendly roads and paths. Visit www.sustrans.org.uk for free printable cycle route maps. Fancy joining other families for a bike ride? www.cyclinguk. org lists hundreds of UK cycling events, including ones that are suitable for families. It’s also worth asking what your local bike club has to offer, as lots of cycling clubs organise volunteer-led rides for beginners and families.

Spring Clean
YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE
It’s not just homes that benefit from a good ol’ spring clean… Ditch old makeup and skincare products Most of us are guilty of holding onto favourite cosmetics way longer than we should do. While makeup doesn’t have a fixed useby date as such, it does start to degrade once it’s been exposed to air and sunlight. If you check the packaging of any skincare or cosmetic product, you’ll find the PAO symbol. This shows the ‘period after opening’ that the product needs to be used within. In most cases, it’s six or 12 months. Products that come into direct contact with your skin, such as a lipstick, or a moisturiser that you scoop out of the jar with a finger, are particularly virulent breeding grounds for bacteria. So have a good sort through and ditch anything that’s been open longer than its PAO. It’s also worth having a bit of a declutter at the same time. Are you ever going to wear that lurid purple eyeshadow? If you want products that will last longer, check the PAO before you buy. In general, pump action lotions will last longer than those in jars, as the lotion comes into less contact with oxygen and light.
Clean makeup brushes Makeup brushes and cases can get decidedly grubby, so it’s a good idea to give them a gentle clean on a regular basis. Most cosmetic bags can be washed by hand, using a mild detergent. Brushes can be cleaned with face wash, baby shampoo or a mild soap. Soap is probably the easiest. Just swirl the brush gently on wet soap to create lather, use your fingers to massage the bristles, then rinse thoroughly with warm water and leave it to dry. If your old brushes are past the point of revival, the Nellie Make Up Brush Set from Oliver Bonas is worth considering. For £38, you get five different types of brushes and a handy mirror, all housed in a stylish pink case.
Try something new It’s easy to get stuck in a perfume rut, wearing the same fragrance year after year. Or worse, wearing a fragrance you’ve been given as a gift but aren’t in love with. Fragrance doesn’t have to be expensive. Marks and Spencer’s Island Escape Eau De Toilette is £16 for a 95ml bottle. For £18 you can have the giftset, which includes a full size fragrance and body lotion. Island Escape is a light, citrusy fragrance, with notes of bergamot, pear and rose, mixed with a hint of sea salt, so it’s perfect for spring and summer.
Slap on the SPF Ideally, we should protect our skin from the sun every day, rain or shine. The easiest way to take care of your face is by choosing a moisturiser with a high SPF rating. Nspa Expert Daily Rejuvenate Cream has an SPF of 30 and contains active ingredients such as Crocus Chrysanthus Bulb extract, which has been proven to improve the appearance of ageing skin. What’s more, the cream costs just £10 in ASDA. It’s ideal for spring, but come summer you’ll need a sun lotion that you can reapply throughout the day.

Losing your much longed for baby during pregnancy or soon after birth is the most awful trauma any parent can experience. A whole future is taken away from that family. Sadly this happens only too often. Currently 15 babies a day die in the weeks before or just after birth. Sands aims to care for those families with practical and emotional support for as long as they need it.

Tickets are currently on sale on the Miss British Beauty Curve website. The pageant
MAKES IT TO THE FINALS
consists of three rounds, swimsuit, glitz and glamour wear and evening wear. The winner will then be selected by a panel of judges. After turning 25 last year Lauren decided it was the right time to let all her fears go and throw herself in to doing what she loves. She entered the competition as she wanted to participate in something that is sparking a change in society where we are finally accepting and celebrating the differences in others. She has entered a few competitions in the past but she felt this is the right opportunity for her to really put herself out there and pursue her dream. Lauren recently left her office job to look after her two year old son and focus on a different career path in plus size modelling. Her aim is to bring home the Miss British Beauty Curve crown to Shropshire and hopefully inspire other women to love and accept themselves for who they are.

TIPS FOR EFFICIENT CLEANING
• For a proper fresh start, begin by tidying all the mess that has built up over the last year. Sort it out into piles of rubbish, things to give away, stuff that needs mending and everything else that needs to find a rightful home. Ta da! You have created much more space in your home and plenty of room to get cleaning. • Be prepared. Work out what jobs you are going to tackle, wear appropriate clothing and gather together all the necessary tools and products. A spacious caddy will come in very handy. • Divide tasks into five key areas: vacuuming, dusting, mopping/ scrubbing, washing and wiping, and polishing. Don’t forget specific jobs such as turning mattresses, spotcleaning upholstery, cleaning the oven, defrosting the fridge, descaling the shower head and beating rugs. You may also get super-organised and add in those less frequent tasks such as steam-cleaning the carpets or having the chimney swept. • Your basic principles of cleaning should be to work from top to bottom and tackle dry chores before wet ones. Decide whether to do one room at a time or one task at a time throughout the whole house. Put some music on and enjoy the process – your home will be gleaming before you know it.

Home & Interiors They are beautiful, natural, healthy, and get better with age – wooden floors are ideal almost everywhere in the house. SAND BACK YOUR OLD BOARDS
WOODEN FLOORING
Can you fit a timber floor if you want underfloor heating? The answer is yes, though timber does not give quite as high a heat output as a concrete floor. When retro-fitting, it may be possible to lay new boards over old ones – but only if they are very even, and usually covered with 18-20mm of ply to give a substantial base. Bear in mind that you will raise your floor level and that, when fixing the floor down, you’ll need to avoid any pipes and wires that may run beneath the existing floor.
If you are renovating, the simplest and cheapest option is often simply to sand back the boards that are already there. Not every floor is worth sanding, Image above: Lulworth Blue floor paint, £67 per however. The effort of removing copious amounts of nails may be too much, or the 2.5l, Farrow & Ball: 01202 876 141; farrow-ball.com. The main choice you’ll be faced with is floor may be riddled with woodworm, be between solid wood, engineered wood and laminate. too uneven, or made of such poor quality wood, that replacing Solid wood is just that – whatever type of wood it is goes all would actually be better. the way through, so it looks entirely natural and can be sanded If you are planning to sand, the first job is to mend or replace again and again. It’s available in the form of boards, strips (less any boards that are damaged, hopefully with matching second than 10cm wide), blocks (extremely strong, laid in patterns hand boards (if you use new boards you will have to stain them such as herringbone and basket weave) and parquet (like later to match). Make sure you hammer down protruding nail blocks, but thinner). heads before you start sanding. Engineered wood (sometimes called multi-layer or, confusingly, laminated) is made from layers of solid timber or a veneer of solid timber on top of MDF, plywood, chipboard or softwood, The aged patina of reclaimed boards is absolutely beautiful, with a balancing veneer beneath. Most are made up of either but such authenticity does not come cheap – do not expect three or five layers, cross-bonded for greater stability. A top to pay substantially less than for new boards, while common layer of at least 5mm allows for limited sanding if necessary. problems include woodworm, ingrained dirt and stains, dents
TYPES OF TIMBER
USING RECLAIMED BOARDS
and splits, variations in thickness or colour, broken tongue and groove, and the need to remove or countersink thousands of old rusty nails. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Ask where the wood came from and how it has been stored since it was reclaimed – timber that has stood outside for any length of time may be useless, and would certainly need to dry out considerably before it could be used again. The rule of thumb is that pine is cheaper than oak, and narrower boards are cheaper than wider ones.
FITTING A NEW TIMBER FLOOR
New timber floors can be fitted anywhere in the house, on solid or suspended floors, though they’re often not advised for bathrooms or other wet areas. This is because wood expands and contracts according to the humidity of the room.
Laminates generally comprise a resin-impregnated decorative paper surface layer (with photographs of real wood) bonded to a thin MDF or chipboard core. With cheap versions it’s easy to spot the pattern repeat and they’re not awfully durable, but more expensive versions are incredibly tough and come with long guarantees. Timber floors are given ‘grades’ describing their appearance (nothing to do with quality or durability). They vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but are often called ‘select’, ‘natural’ and ‘rustic’ or ‘country’. As you might imagine, they therefore range from very even in colour and grain to rather gnarled and knotty. ‘Rustic’ grades are the cheapest and ‘select’ the most expensive.
Finishes for Floorboards
• PAINT: a great cover-up, available in a range of colours. • STAINS: may be oil or water-based. Will change the colour but may still need a finish for protection.
• WAX: a polished wooden floor is a sight to behold, with a lovely gentle sheen and natural smell, but they do require regular re-waxing.
• OIL: gives a natural finish, sinking deep into the grain
to protect the wood. Again, they need re-applying regularly, so don’t even consider it unless you’re prepared to put in the hard work.
• UV-CURED OIL AND WAX: almost like lacquer, but with the look of oil or wax.
• LACQUER AND VARNISH: available in matt, satin and gloss finishes, these are very hard wearing but don’t give such a natural finish.

Is It Worthwhile Private health insurance generally covers the cost of private consultations, treatments, and immediate aftercare as an inpatient. Some policies also pay for outpatient care, such as physiotherapy. Employers sometimes offer this type of insurance as a benefit to their employees, but if you’re thinking of taking out your own policy, how do you know if it’s going to be worthwhile?
TAKING OUT PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE?
What are the potential drawbacks of private medical insurance?
• Policies are costly, with premiums increasing every year • Some health conditions are excluded, so a private healthcare policy may not cover all your medical needs • You have to pay an excess each year • You may have ethical concerns about private health care
Before we look at the benefits and potential drawbacks of private medical insurance, here’s a little more detail on the cover that could be included.
• The insurer sets limits on the amount of cover available for each condition, each type of treatment, and an overall amount in the policy year
What might a health insurance policy cover?
Types of private healthcare insurance
The benefits provided by private health insurance vary according to the monthly premiums, with comprehensive policies offering the greatest level of cover. Here’s a general outline of the main benefits: • Private consultations • Anaesthesia • Inpatient stays for investigative tests, surgery, or immediate posttreatment care • Treatments and procedures as a day patient • Outpatient treatments and aftercare - physiotherapy or hydrotherapy, for example Some health insurance providers also offer cover for alternative therapies such as acupuncture, homeopathy and herbal medicine, and dental or eye care.
What isn’t covered?
Policies can be tailored to individual circumstances, so if you have a family for example, you could take out a policy that covers your partner and children. Some people choose age-specific policies, but bear in mind that the older you are, the more expensive private health insurance will be. As well as family policies, you can buy individual private healthcare, joint policies and standalone policies specifically for children.
How much will private health insurance cost?
Various factors are taken into account by insurers when setting the price of private healthcare premiums - these include (but are not limited to): • Age • Existing health • Medical history as an individual, and of your family
Although specialist insurers do exist, a basic health insurance policy doesn’t generally cover:
• Lifestyle
• Pre-existing conditions (usually in the last five years) or chronic illnesses • Pregnancy and childbirth • Cosmetic surgery • Fertility treatment • Emergency treatment
It’s advisable to shop around before buying private health insurance. Comparison websites offer an idea of how much various policies cost, but as with many other types of insurance, there are ways to lower your premiums.
How does private health insurance work?
Private medical insurance is designed to work alongside NHS services, so your GP would need to refer you for a private consultation. Policies are renewed annually, with monetary excesses applying in the same way as with other forms of insurance. The insurer sets a limit on the amount of cover available to you annually. They define the benefits, plus any exclusions that apply - a pre-existing illness, for example - in the policy document. You pay a monthly premium, usually by direct debit, and are able to take advantage of cover during the policy year, up to the set limits.
Why might you decide to take out private health insurance? • You need fast access to a consultation, investigative procedure, or treatment • Treatment isn’t available on the NHS • You’re employed, but don’t receive private health insurance as a benefit • You’d like to see a particular consultant, or require a specialist referral • You want the comfort of staying in a private room • You don’t want to wait for physiotherapy after surgery
44
• Types of cover required
Choosing to pay a higher excess in the event of a claim can reduce the amount you pay each month. Some insurers also offer no claims discounts, and reductions if you can prove that you attend a gym regularly, for example. If a ‘waiting time’ is added to your policy’s terms and conditions, it can also lower the costs involved when taking out private medical insurance. Essentially, this means that, if the NHS waiting list is less than the waiting period stated in your policy, you must receive treatment on the NHS. Otherwise, your policy covers the cost of private treatment.
Alternatives to private health insurance
There are alternative ways to fund private medical treatment without taking out an insurance policy. If you have residual income or existing savings, for example, you could set aside a sum to cover a proportion of future treatments. Paying only for the initial consultation is also an option if you require an urgent medical opinion. The consultant would then refer you back to the NHS for treatment, if necessary. Healthcare cash plans also exist that help you cover your medical costs. In this case you’re refunded the costs that you pay up front, up to pre-agreed limits.

The Value of Mortgage Advice With so many mortgage lenders offering their products on the high street and online, it can be tempting to cut out the middleman and 'go direct'. But when you're making such an important financial commitment, the guidance you can get from a qualified mortgage adviser can be invaluable. Here are four ways we can make a difference to your mortgage search: 1. We have access to a wide range of well-known lenders and thousands of mortgage deals, so we can find a rate that suits you. But we also look beyond the rate, taking into account fees and your individual circumstances, we can recommend a solution tailored to you. 2. We know the market, if you're self-employed or have a small deposit it may be much harder for you to find a mortgage now than it was a few years ago, we can save you the time and hassle of trawling the market, and help you find a lender. 3. We'll do the hard work for you, we’ll work with you to complete all the necessary application forms, liaise on your behalf with solicitors, valuers and surveyors, and help to make the process as smooth as possible. 4. We're professionally qualified Unlike many branch and telephone-based mortgage sellers in banks and building societies, we're qualified to advise you on a broad range of lenders and products.

It's Not Only PPI
THAT YOU CAN RECLAIM
The Payment Protection Insurance mis-selling scandal has resulted in billions of pounds being repaid to customers by the banks and other large financial institutions. But it’s not just PPI that can be reclaimed from organisations failing to follow stringent selling guidelines designed to protect the public. So what other reclaims could you potentially make? From bank charges to student loan repayments, here are a few other reclaim opportunities you might want to look into.
Packaged bank accounts
Although packaged bank accounts are very useful in many cases, it’s possible that the product may have been mis-sold in a similar way to PPI. So what could constitute mis-selling in this instance? • You weren’t told that you had to pay a monthly fee. • The account was sold to you by an overbearing or overenthusiastic salesperson. • You don’t qualify for the insurance policies included in the package – on age or health-related grounds, for example. • The bank told you your credit rating would improve if you opened this type of account. Whatever the reason, you can claim a refund of the fees, plus interest, from the bank. Money Saving Expert and other websites offer free resources in this respect, to help you make your claim. If the bank refuses to repay, you can take your claim to the Financial Ombudsman Service – an independent and free service set up to resolve disputes between financial institutions and their customers. Furthermore, the Ombudsman ultimately has the power to enforce their decision if it differs from that of the financial institution concerned.
Bank charges
Despite the banks winning a 2009 Supreme Court Ruling on the fairness of their charges, you may be able to reclaim bank charges that you believe are unfair, particularly if you’re facing financial hardship. Being charged high fees when you’re experiencing financial difficulty can exacerbate an already distressing situation. If you’re in this position and have exceeded a pre-arranged overdraft limit, or cheques or direct debits have been returned on your account, you can write to your bank explaining the situation and requesting a refund. You may receive a full or partial refund from the bank, but if they refuse you can pursue your case with the Financial Ombudsman Service.
Council tax payments
If your property was placed in the wrong council tax band, you may be able to reclaim the overpayments made – potentially for decades – as well as reducing your ongoing monthly costs. When properties were valued in preparation for the new Council Tax system, the process became known as ‘second gear valuations.’ It was said that those given the task of valuation didn’t move out of second gear when driving past the properties, leading to inaccurate results.
48
Although properties in Wales were later revalued, those in England and Scotland remained in their original (potentially incorrect) council tax band. If you live in England, you can confirm your banding on the Valuation Office Agency (VOA) website. You also need to check the council tax band of neighbours with property closest to yours in terms of size and value. This can be done either online, or by asking your neighbours in person. If they’re in a lower band you may have a case for reclaiming, but be aware that your own property could have been correctly valued. This would potentially mean that your neighbours were liable to pay a higher amount, possibly backdated to 1991, so it’s advisable to tread carefully in this respect.
Student loan overpayments
Student loan repayments are deducted from your earnings by the Student Loans Company (SLC), rather than from your bank account. As the SLC only receives earnings and employment updates annually, the information they hold can be sometimes be outdated. This means that it’s easy to overpay on your student loan if your income reduces, or when the loan has been paid off. If you think you’ve overpaid for any reason, you can call the Student Loans Company to check, and verify your bank details should a refund be due.
Amazon Prime
If you’ve taken out a free 30-day subscription to Amazon Prime and simply forgotten to cancel it, you should receive an instant refund if you or anyone authorised on the account hasn’t used any of the services. It’s also been known for Amazon customers to inadvertently click the wrong button when purchasing an item and take out a free trial of Amazon Prime unintentionally. If this has happened to you, and you’ve been charged the Prime membership fee at the end of the trial period, you can contact Amazon to explain the situation. They should offer you a full or pro-rata refund, depending on whether you’ve used any of their Prime services in the meantime. Claiming your right to a refund as a consumer is important, and should be pursued if you believe that you’ve been wrongly charged. Reclaiming this money can help your financial situation, and sends a strong message to financial and other institutions that they must comply with the regulations and take care of their customers. Health
MANAGING YOUR STRESS • Panic attacks. • Insomnia or disturbed sleep. • Muscle tension. • Blurred eyesight or sore eyes. • Loss of libido. • Teeth grinding or clenching your jaw. • Headaches. • Chest pains. • High blood pressure. • Indigestion or heartburn. • Constipation or diarrhoea. • Nausea or dizziness. • Fatigue.
Reducing and Coping with Stress Persistent stress can affect our health and even cause serious illness, so we need to know how to reduce stress and its effects. ‘Stress’ can refer to two different but related things: situations or events that put pressure on us; and our reaction to that pressure.
Stress can:
• Affect your mental health, causing problems such as depression and exacerbating existing mental health issues. • Affect your physical health by preventing proper sleeping or eating, and causing excess cortisol and adrenaline release. This makes you feel unwell and may eventually lead to serious conditions, e.g. heart disease, asthma, stroke, diabetes and some cancers.
What Causes Stress?
Reducing your responsibilities and using time-management or organisational techniques can help to reduce stress in your life. You can find time management tips at www.nhs.uk/ conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/time-managementtips/ and www.mind.org.uk/information-support/tips-foreveryday-living/stress/dealing-with-pressure/, which also has coping strategies for specific pressures, such as being a student. Reducing the causes of our stress is important, but sometimes we can’t change stressful situations. However, we can learn to improve how we react to them.
Self-help strategies include: > Complementary therapies
Therapies like yoga, meditation, aromatherapy, massage, acupuncture and ecotherapy (time spent in nature) may help you relax. > Lifestyle Changes
• Major changes or events: bereavement, moving home, financial crises, exams, redundancy, retirement, job change, marriage, relationship break-up, illness/injury, pregnancy/ parenthood. ‘Happy’ events put extra pressure on us not to appear stressed.
A healthy diet, regular exercise and adequate sleep help. Spend time with family and friends and talk through your problems. Make time for hobbies and relaxation; downtime isn’t a luxury, but essential for a healthy mind and body.
• Continual pressure: job, health or relationship worries, overwhelming responsibilities.
Develop a more positive outlook. This video discusses replacing negative thinking with positive: www.nhs.uk/Video/ Pages/unhelpful-thinking-podcast.aspx?searchtype=Tag&sear chterm=Mental+health.
• Feeling out of control and unable to change situations. • Uncertainty, e.g. potential redundancy. • A life that lacks change, purpose or activity. • Clutter and disorganisation, e.g. always running late. Research shows just the sight of clutter causes stress. Your stress threshold may depend on:
> Changing Your Mind
> Breathing eercises You can find instructions at www.nhs.uk/conditions/stressanxiety-depression/ways-relieve-stress/ > Stress-busting apps and courses
• Your perception of the situation (affected by your positivity (or lack of it) and past experiences).
Try the NHS’ Chill Panda apps.beta.nhs.uk/chill-panda/, Silver Cloud apps.beta.nhs.uk/silvercloud/ and the Stress & Anxiety Companion apps.beta.nhs.uk/stress-anxiety-companion/.
• Your mental health and emotional resilience.
For further help, visit your GP, who can recommend:
• The support you receive.
> Talking treatments
Symptoms of Stress
• Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps you understand your stress triggers and reaction to them, showing you how to act and react more positively.
• Avoiding the stress source. • Irritability, impatience, aggression, restlessness. • Depression or anxiety. • An inability to enjoy yourself/take an interest. • A sense of dread. • Feeling neglected or tearful. • Difficulty making decisions and concentrating. • Poor lifestyle choices: biting your nails, smoking or drinking, eating too much/too little. • Shallow breathing/hyperventilating.
50
• Mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) combines mindfulness, meditation and yoga to reduce stress. > Medication to reduce symptoms E.g. antidepressants, sleeping pills, irritable bowel syndrome treatments and high blood pressure medication.
Don’t ignore stress until it’s damaged your health. Tackle it now.

Back Pain
The most frequent pain problem we treat as physiotherapists is back pain whether it be acute or chronic, just in the spine or referred down the leg and presenting as sciatica. Back pain can be present for a number of reasons be it a muscular problem, disc, facet joint or postural. All can be a significant problem. There are a number of myths about back pain which often can change the way we work with the pain, how we obtain diagnoses and how we should manage and treat our back pain. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy have published a number of myths associated with back pain.
Myth #1 - Moving will make my back pain worse Fact: People fear twisting and bending but it’s essential to keep moving gradually increase how much you are doing, and stay on the go. Often reduced mobility can cause more restriction and pain.
Myth #2 - I should avoid exercises, especially weight training
Fact: Back pain shouldn’t stop you enjoying exercises or regular activities. In fact, studies found that continuing with these can help you get better sooner – including using weights where appropriate. Your guideline should always be pain and try not to work through it
52
MYTH BUSTERS Myth #3 - A scan will show me exactly what is wrong Fact: Sometimes it will, but most often it won’t. Also even people without back pain have changes in their spine so scans can cause fear that influences behaviour, making the problem worse.
Myth #4 - Pain equals damage Fact: This was the established view but more recent research has changed our thinking. Modern physio takes a holistic approach that helps people understand why they are in pain. All the above are examples of myths surrounding back pain the evidence tells us that mobility is better than rest, that gentle exercise is better than no exercise and that pain is often not a measure of how severe a problem is. It is important to understand back pain and to work with it. If you do suffer with back pain and are struggling to manage the pain and find yourself wondering what is a good pain and what is a bad pain, can I do a certain activity or not or are just not sure if you’re doing the right or wrong things then all our 6 physiotherapists can help. Each physiotherapist has over 15 years experience in treating musculoskeletal problems. So if the above rings any bells then please feel free to contact one of our Physio’s to see if Physiotherapy can help.

Shropshire Prostate Cancer
SUPPORT GROUP
The Shropshire Prostate Cancer Support Group recently donated £4,000 to two local Lion’s Groups.
Financial Support
The photo shows President Charlie Miller of Ironbridge and Severn Gorge Lions receiving a cheque for £2,000, a second cheque was presented to Newport and Gnosall Lions this week.
We hold monthly bric a brac sales at the PRH and other fundraising events throughout the year at various locations in Telford. Each PSA testing kit now costs around £18 per person.
The money will be used for future free PSA testing evenings helping to diagnose Prostate Cancer. Recent PSA test evenings carried out in Newport and Madeley attracted over 700 men, at Madeley 15% of the men tested were flagged up as having abnormal PSA levels. We believe lives are being saved as a direct result of these blood tests for Prostate Cancer.
Being an independent group we rely on fundraising and accept grants from organisations that support our cause, and donations from the general public.
We also donate/support Prostate Cancer UK, and “Tackle” who issue a quarterly magazine covering the current situation, ref: progress in finding a cure for Prostate Cancer.
What do we do?
Pictured left to right: Dennis Briggs (Chairman of SPCSG), Charlie Miller (President of Ironbridge and Severn Gorge Lions), Ian Bolinbroke (Treasurer of SPSG), Ann Lovatt and Kath Pagett (Joint Secretaries of SPCSG).
We are here to help you, however we can’t do anything unless you contact us, by phone on 07975 855247, by email at info@spcsg.co.uk or personally. Hopefully you will join us in the fight to control this disease.

Telford Triathlon Club Telford Triathlon Club looks forward to an exciting year of training, competition and enjoyment of swimming, running and cycling together. Formed in Autumn 2017, the club has already established a weekly routine of coached sessions at Oakengates Leisure Centre Track and Much Wenlock Swimming Pool, social rides, runs and swims. Telford Triathlon Club has forged a brand new partnership with Telford and Wrekin Council to encourage more people to try multi-sports events in 2018. Together they will be organising local “Go Tri” events in the local area. These will be short achievable distances, low-cost, suitable for all abilities and a great introduction to multi-sports. “Lots of local people like myself run, cycle and swim a little and are looking for a new challenge,” commented Heather Brennan, a beginner member and Club Secretary. “It’s great that we have this new club which is open to all abilities, shapes and sizes.” Jude Ingram, another beginner member, added: “I’ve already improved my running after a few sessions with our fantastic running coach and Ironman triathlete, Mark Taylor.”
Members also benefit from an online discussion group and a chance to ask about all aspects of Triathlon from the more experienced club members. Luke Mills, Chair of Telford Triathlon Club, said: “We formed the club to encourage local people to swim, cycle and run their way to better health and wellbeing. We welcome and support complete beginners through to Ironman competitors, whatever their goals are. Members ask all sorts of things in the group and there’s always someone who can help.” Mark Halstead, Welfare Officer and Middle Distance 70.3 triathlete, added: “We were all beginners once and we know how it feels!”
Another benefit of being a member is competing together. Several members will be supporting each other at events in Ludlow, Shrewsbury, Nantwich, Stafford, Wales and beyond over the coming months, so look out for their navy and royal blue sports kit. One member is even travelling to Barcelona! 2018 is a set to be a very successful year for Telford Triathlon Club. Join them for their first GO Tri Aquathon, suitable for beginners but open to all abilities, on Sunday 6th May - 200m pool swim and 2.5km run. House Prices! Brought to you by James Carlon James Carlon Co Author of ‘THE TELFORD PROPERTY BLOG’
Shropshire and the West Midlands saw the highest rise in house prices of anywhere in the UK last year - that’s according to the latest figures released by Nationwide building society.
If you already own property in Telford, either as a homeowner or investor, you’ll no doubt be glad to know your house is increasing in value.
I would urge some caution when reading the headline figure - an annual rise of 5.2% - because it’s never quite that simple and values vary significantly across the West Midlands, and even within Telford itself.
One of the key points in the Nationwide report is that first-time buyers are still finding it very difficult to pull a deposit together to be able to secure a mortgage.
“From our own figures, I would say the average change in Telford has been more like an increase of 2.5% during 2017, which is encouraging for a number of reasons.” The housing market doesn’t react well to big shifts in value, so it’s good news that the gradual rise from the past couple of years has continued. 56
But it’s vital to appreciate the importance of pricing your property sensibly if you are looking to sell.
And the scarcity of first-time buyers means the turnover of housing stock can sometimes be sluggish - so setting the right asking price is even more important. Why not give me a call for more advice about buying and selling property in Shropshire on 01952 292 300?

New Rules for Landlords on Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards Brought to you by Dawn Clarke Dawn Clarke Co Author of ‘THE TELFORD PROPERTY BLOG’
If you are a landlord with properties which may not be the most energyefficient, new rules being introduced in April could give you a shock. The Minimum Energy Efficiency Standard, or MEES as it is known, will make it illegal for anyone to let property with an Energy Performance Certificate rating lower than an E. So that means if any of your properties currently have a rating of F or G, you will need to do some work pretty quickly to improve their energy efficiency or you risk being landed with a rather hefty fine.
“Trading Standards will be enforcing the new rules, and penalties will be based on the rateable value of the property - with a maximum fine of £150,000.” It’s important to understand that the regulations apply to new tenancies or the renewal of existing tenancies. So, so if your tenancy is on a fixed term which is due for renewal after 1st April 2018, you will have until the renewal date to carry out the necessary improvements. However, if your tenancy has rolled over onto a periodic tenancy before 1st April 2018, you will have until 2020 to get your property up to standard. 58
However, from April 2023 - only five years away - MEES will cover all tenancies, even on properties where a periodic tenancy is ongoing. We would advise all landlords to take action to ensure the value of their properties does not diminish, because any falling below the minimum standards would quickly become very undesirable to potential investors. A good starting point is to check the energy rating for your properties or, if you have carried out any improvement works since the last EPC was registered, it would be advisable to have it re-assessed. Energy Performance Certificates are valid for 10 years but if your property was given a D or an E rating a while ago, you could find it being downgraded to an F or a G because assessments are more accurate now. If that’s the case, you need to know sooner rather than later so you can take the necessary action and avoid the possibility of being fined. For more advice about property management, give me a call on 01952 290163.

Local Development Order
MEANS HOMEOWNERS MIGHT NOT NEED PLANNING
Homeowners in Telford and Wrekin are now able to carry out a vast range of improvements to their property without the need for planning permission.
This is as a result of positive moves by Telford & Wrekin Council to introduce a Local Development Order (LDO) in response to new government legislation. The LDO has been introduced to speed up and simplify the planning process for people who are building single storey, first floor and two storey rear or side extensions. It also applies to residents who are adding a porch, thermal cladding or creating a dropped kerb outside their homes. The Telford and Wrekin LDO also allows some small extensions to converted residential properties. Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Deputy Leader and cabinet member for Housing, said: “The LDO means that projects that meet specific criteria do not require planning permission. “We have one of the most progressive LDOs in the UK as it goes further than many others, which don’t include dropped kerbs and thermal cladding in their remit.
JAYS REMOVALS & STORAGE LTD We are a family run business and deliver a professsional removal to the highest standard. We ensure our customers are 100% happy with the work we do and offer excellent value for money.
YOUR HOME, SAFE IN OUR HANDS
“The LDO applies across the borough with the exception of the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site, the seven Conservation Areas, listed buildings and sites of local interest.
“It is important to highlight the existence of the LDO as we believe that many homeowners are unaware that they can improve their property without the need to apply for planning. “Anyone who is considering work to a property should check whether they can progress under the LDO before applying for planning permission. “We will be able to advise if they meet the criteria and deal with the process from start to finish. The majority of residential works are likely to fall within these new streamlined regulations.” New government legislation has meant that the fees for planning applications will increase by 20 per cent – hence Telford & Wrekin Council’s introduction of the LDO to ease the burden on residents who are planning small scale home improvements. Under the rules of the LDO, homeowners or agents can apply for a certificate of compliance at the same point of the building regulations application – effectively making one application rather than two and following one process. The cost to apply is also less than the current and proposed planning fees. For more information visit www.apt-group.co.uk

Dont be an April Fool KEEP YOUR STUFF SAFE ON PCS AND PHONES It seems like every day there’s a new warning about hackers and dodgy software — and over Christmas we learned that there was a security flaw in almost every modern computer, tablet and phone that could let baddies get our passwords and other private information. So how do we keep our important information safe and secure?
1
There are three important things to consider. They are: loss, where you lose digital things such as photos, home movies or documents you don’t want to lose; malicious software, which is when a program sneaks onto your computer and causes trouble; and hacking, which is when somebody you don’t know gets into your computer to access your personal information and/or demand money. The good news is that they’re all easy to deal with. Let’s talk about loss first. The single best way to prevent loss of valuable personal things such as family photos is to have extra copies. They don’t need to be printed copies — if you take as many photos as we do the cost of getting even some of them printed is frightening — and if you keep your copies digital then you don’t need to spend too much money to copy your entire photo or video library, or anything else you want to keep a backup of.
2
You can store backups on services such as Google Photos, Flickr and Apple’s iCloud, but for proper peace of mind we’d recommend backing up to an external hard disk: that’s much faster, and doesn’t require you to keep up a membership or pay a monthly subscription as some online services do. You can get a really good external hard disk for less than £40, and you don’t need to pay much for faster, even higher capacity ones: at the time of writing Seagate’s Expansion drive, which offers 1TB of storage and has a super-fast USB 3.0 connection for modern PCs and Macs, is just £45. If you’re backing up really massive libraries, a whopping 4TB of storage is still under £100 — although most of us won’t need anything close to that.
3
External hard disks aren’t the only options. You could burn your own DVD data discs, or use USB flash drives such as SanDisk’s Ultra Flair 32GB (£12.95). However, we’re not convinced they’re great options for long-term backups. Drives such as the Patuoxun Portable USB DVD CD RW Writer may be cheap — £17 from Amazon, with discs even cheaper — but DVD and CD discs don’t last forever and many of our ones started to rot after a few years in normal conditions. And if you’ve used many USB sticks you’ll know of their incredible ability to go missing and never be found again. There’s not much point in having a backup if you can’t find it when you need it. The cures for malicious software and hacking are the same: security software. There are plenty of free options such as the excellent AVG Free (www.avg.com), but it’s worth considering spending a little money on a paid-for security suite such as BitDefender Total Security (around £49/£69 for an unlimited-device Family Pack). BitDefender doesn’t just cover your PC: it protects Macs, Android and iPhone/iPads too, and it includes tools to stop bad things getting onto your devices as well as anti-hacking protection for your personal data. It comes highly recommended by the internet’s most trusted review sites.

Make the Most
OF A SMALL BATHROOM
Even a tiny bathroom can function brilliantly and look gorgeous. Our top ten tricks of the trade will help you make the most of your space. After all, size isn’t everything. The perfect bathroom – whether it’s a shared family affair or an en suite shower and WC – is a great blend of comfort, good looks and functional efficiency. The good news is that all these can be achieved even in a small space and, with some clever thinking, it is even possible to trick the eye into thinking that the room is actually larger than it really is.
1 Choose subtle colours Maintaining a pale, neutral colour palette will automatically open up a small bathroom, giving it a clean, sophisticated, contemporary feel. If you can’t live without colour, watery blues and greens have a cool, clear quality that help the room feel light and airy. Add texture to avoid an overly clinical feel – think timber shelving, wicker baskets, waffle towels and linen blinds, for example.
2 Fit excellent storage Nothing makes a room feel small as much as too much clutter. The simple answer is to minimise what you keep in your bathroom and then find clever spaces to store it. Cupboards do take up valuable floor space but, because cleaning products and toiletries are pretty small, slimline storage will suffice. If renovating, you can build false walls to conceal pipework and set cupboards or niches within them; otherwise, look for anywhere that storage could be added, from above the door to below the basin, even behind the bath panel or a rack inside the shower.
3 Make the most of natural light Enhance the space by getting the most light possible through the windows – make sure nothing on the sills is blocking it, and that window treatments do not cover any part of the glass. Then bounce the light around the room by using mirrors and glossy tiles.
A large mirror, a pale, neutral colour palette and raising fittings off the floor all promote a feeling of spaciousness in this compact bathroom by Ikea (www.ikea.com/gb).
smooth-flowing space; instead, choose recessed spotlights, or neat directional lights mounted on a slender track. As a hidden light source you could fit LED strips beneath wall units, with a baffle board in front to avoid glare, and don’t forget an illuminated mirror. Bear in mind that fittings will need to be IPrated for safety (ask advice from your electrician).
7 Two-in-one is best Never have two pieces of furniture when you can have just one – multifunction is the way to go. Choose towel radiators, storage seats, mirrored cabinets and basins with cupboards beneath, for example.
8 Consider underfloor heating
4 Select fittings wisely There are plenty of bathroom fittings on the market designed for small bathrooms that don’t compromise on looks or function, including short-projection WCs, shower-baths, thinbut-tall towel rails and ultra-slim basins. For awkward spaces, look for corner showers, basins and even WCs. Wall or mixer taps create room on a small basin, and check that it has space for soap – you might need to add a wall-mounted dispenser.
5 Raise it off the floor Even without using smaller-than-average or ingeniously shaped fittings, it is possible to make a bathroom appear more spacious than it really is by installing wall-mounted pieces. Not only do they look modern and sophisticated, but they also show off the floor space beneath, and the more floor you can see, the bigger the room appears.
Getting rid of your radiator can potentially free up a valuable amount of floor space and, if you are renovating your bathroom, installing underfloor heating is relatively easy and inexpensive, using either loose wiring or mats.
9 Employ visual tricks It may seem counter-intuitive, but large-format tiles (wall or floor) can work better in compact bathrooms than smaller tiles, which may appear fussy. With fewer grout lines, large tiles look sleek and are also easier to maintain.
6 Lighting is vital Try to create a suitably bright and breezy bathroom lighting scheme that meets all your requirements, from putting on make-up to reading in the bath. Avoid lights that dangle or protrude too much, as they will interrupt the impression of

Slimline storage is ideal for a small space. Essentials Jax ladder rail, £59; Jax wall unit, £69; (www.made.com).
10 Assess your window options Curtains in a bathroom make a pleasant change to the hard surfaces elsewhere, but in a small room it is best to avoid anything too flouncy. Floaty sheers in simple gathers are better than dark, heavy fabrics – a flat panel of muslin threaded onto a pole or wire across the bottom half of the window could work well. Alternatively, try a neat Roman or roller blind, waterproof louvre shutters or simple frosted glass.

PETS:
PROTECT YOUR CATS AND DOGS IN THE GARDEN THIS SPRING
If you’re enjoying the warmer weather this springtime, and spending more time in the garden with your pet, here are a few tips to keep both cats and dogs safe and well, and avoid any urgent visits to the vet. Seasonal plants Some spring bulbs and plants can be poisonous to dogs and cats. Daffodils, in particular, cause problems if ingested, but other plants such as tulips, hyacinths, crocuses and clematis are also toxic. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, and lethargy, potentially leading to dehydration and convulsions. In cases where the most poisonous plants have been consumed, the after-effects may be seen within 15 minutes.
Chocolate Easter eggs Chocolate contains theobromine, which is highly toxic to your dog or cat. Although dark chocolate contains the most theobromine, the levels in milk chocolate are also sufficient to cause serious health problems. It’s advisable to consult your vet as a matter of urgency if you know that your pet has consumed chocolate – symptoms include rapid breathing, hyperactivity, seizures, vomiting and diarrhoea.
72
Slug and snail pellets As spring is ‘slug season’, you may be tempted to use slug pellets to control this problem in your garden. Dogs and cats tend to find slug pellets tasty, however, and as many brands contain a poisonous substance called metaldehyde, your pet’s health is at serious and immediate risk after ingestion. Look out for symptoms such as muscle spasms, seizures and lack of coordination, and contact your vet as a matter of urgency. www.nawt.org.uk/advice/keeping-pets-safe-spring www.pets4homes.co.uk/pet-advice/spring-safety-tips-fordog-owners.html www.vets-now.com/2017/01/spring-hazards-cats/

Decorating
WITH DARK COLOURS by Katherine Sorrell
Deeply dramatic interiors create a striking effect and are oh-sofashionable. Do you dare to take the plunge?
An oversized mural adds to the sense of drama in this inspiring black and red scheme. Kahrs Classic Oak Nouveau Charcoal Wood flooring, £69.99 per square metre, Carpetright.
A deep blue makes a fabulous backdrop for vivid colours such as lime, pink or yellow. Annie Sloan chalk paint in Napoleonic Blue, £18.95 per litre.
Choose a dark sofa and arrange paler or bright cushions against it for instant effect. Hermione sofa in blue velvet, £1,287, Darlings of Chelsea.
This blue upholstery shines out when contrasted with a soft, dark grey backdrop. Algernon three-seater sofa in Mallard Blue velvet, £1,140; and Roscoe armchair in Teal, £455; both Perch & Parrow.
DON’T BE SCARED OF THE DARK… A black splashback contributes intense style to a kitchen. These chevron tiles cleverly contrast matt and shiny surfaces. Chevron wall tiles in Black and Black Matt, £53 per square metre, The Baked Tile Company.
A combination of charcoal and blush pink is especially effective. Bath: Floris No. 27; panelling: Sinner No. 238; both from £46 for 2.5l marble matt emulsion, Mylands Paints.
A dark throw is minimal yet dramatic. Tweedmill lambswool throw in navy/ silver grey, £49.99, Black By Design.
74
Don’t forget light fittings as a way to add another layer to a dark and dramatic scheme. Venice Beach House large beaded chandelier, £445, Oh What’s This.
• Dark colours can look warm, cosy and inviting, as well as intensely luxurious and sophisticated. They work especially well in a WC, snug, library, dining room, home office or games room, but – with a bit more decorative courage – are hugely effective in living rooms and bedrooms, too. • What colours to choose? Charcoal grey is intense and eye-catching, yet neutral enough to work as a backdrop for most furnishings. If you prefer a colour, however, navy, burgundy or forest green will make even more of an impact – but will be harder to co-ordinate with. • If all-over dark is simply too much, add drama to a room by painting or papering just one ‘feature’ wall in a distinctive deep colour, or perhaps choosing one or two key items of furniture with which to inject moody character. • Remember that surface textures affect how light or dark a room feels. Matt surfaces absorb light whereas glossy surfaces reflect it. Painting floorboards black, for example? Choose a high-gloss finish to shine light all around. • The deeper the background, the more other colours ‘pop’ out in front of it. Raspberry pink, crimson, lime, orange, emerald and mustard are all great choices for accessories in a dark colour scheme.

TADLOP 100 years ago, women were given the right to vote: a cause that many across the world had fought hard for. 50 years ago a group of women in a Ford factory in Dagenham had their job skill downgraded, and what started as a fight to get their grading back turned into a fight for pay equality. Unfortunately, this is a fight that some women are still having to fight hard for. TADLOP bring the musical version of Made in Dagenham to Telford. The production tells the story of the beginning of the fight for pay equality and is based on the true story and the British film. "It is sad to hear that 50 years on from when the events of Made in Dagenham took place, women are still having to fight for equal pay. There appears to be more and more examples coming to the surface” says publicity manager Lyndsey Bird. “Whilst rehearsing this production a lot of the cast have been struck by how hard these ladies fought for their equal rights

We are having a fun time bringing this story to life but we also want to show that you can bring real change if you stand up for what you believe in.” Made in Dagenham follows Rita O'Grady and her fellow machinists at the Ford Dagenham factory as they find out their job skill level has been downgraded. At first they just fight to have their work recognised as skilled but soon realise that they could instigate major change in equality between men and women. Made in Dagenham contains catchy songs such as "Everybody Out!", "Payday", "Busy Woman" and the inspiring "Stand Up". Made in Dagenham shows where the continued fight for equality began. Made in Dagenham takes place at Oakengates Theatre from the 28th-29th of April at 2:30pm and 7:30pm The Box Office is open and tickets are £14 and can be purchased from society members or via The Place at www.theplacetelford.com For more information check out our website at www.tadlop. com, or find us on Facebook.com/tadlop and Twitter @tadlop1

The Great British The Great British Spring Clean campaign, which is taking place on 2 - 4th March, has a simple aim: to bring people across the country together to clear up the litter that blights our towns, villages, countryside and beaches. The campaign is organised by Keep Britain Tidy, an independent charity working towards eliminating litter, ending waste by creating sustainable practices, and improving our beaches, parks and streets.
Places to be Proud of
The goal of the Great British Spring Clean is to inspire 500,000 people to get outdoors, get active and help clear up the rubbish around them, so that they can ‘live and work in places that they can be proud of and prosper in.’ The campaign works with individuals, businesses, organisations and public bodies, and has some big-name supporters including Coca-Cola Great Britain, Lidl, McDonalds, Wrigley, Costa, Iceland, KFC, Greggs, Stagecoach, the RSPCA, the RSPB and the Marine Conservation Society.
Get Involved
‘Join our growing army of #LitterHeroes who have had enough of other people’s litter and are willing to do something about it,’ urges the campaign’s statement. ‘Together we can make a difference and clean up the environment on our doorstep.’ You can do some litter-picking by yourself or with friends and family, although make sure you stay safe, particularly if you’re litter-picking near roads. If you prefer to join an organised event or group, the campaign page has a handy map of what’s on – and you can also enter your postcode to discover events
78
SPRING CLEAN
taking place near you. Visit www.keepbritaintidy.org/getinvolved/support-our-campaigns/great-british-spring-clean. At Killingbeck in Leeds, for instance, the plan is to clean up the local nature reserve, making ‘the green space on their doorstep’ a nicer, safer place for both people and wildlife. There are also plans to do a litter pick-up in the areas covered by Leeds Health Walks. Meanwhile, Belper claims to be planning its biggest litter-pick ever on the 3rd March, with several sites targeted for clean ups. There are lots of events on the map already – just click on a virtual map pin to see a snippet appear, then click the snippet heading to find out exactly where and when the event is taking place.
Feeling Adventurous?
The more adventurous of you may like to combine litter-picking with sightseeing, exercise or both. Wayne Dixon, whose adventures can be tracked by following @WayneKoda on Twitter, is walking and litter-picking his way around the 7,500 miles of Britain’s coastline accompanied by his dog, Koda. He is raising money for Mind and North Inuit Dogs while also supporting Keep Britain Tidy and their Great British Spring Clean campaign. It’s a cause dear to his heart and Koda’s, as Koda nearly lost a leg when he was injured by a discarded can. You may not have a few years to spare to follow in Wayne’s footsteps, but a shorter coastal excursion could be fun. If you like to be on the water rather than walking beside it, you could join the Plastic Patrol, as featured on The Russell Howard Hour. The group paddleboard the waterways of Britain removing discarded plastic. ‘We’ll supply the litter pickers, refuse sacks and we’ll even dispose of everything you find – just come along, do your bit and have fun.’ Visit www.plasticpatrol. co.uk and click on ‘clean-up events’ to find one near you.

Is Time Up
FOR AGEISM?
“Need some help, young lady?” The young supermarket assistant leaned over his desk, speaking slowly as if talking to a small child. I had already moved away from the checkout area, but couldn’t help glancing back to see who was being served. The ‘young lady’ in question was actually a well-dressed woman in her mid-eighties, who had paused to search for something in her handbag. It wasn’t clear whether the assistant was being ironic or whether he genuinely believed he was being helpful, but whatever his intention, the elderly customer chose to ignore his flippant remark. She presented the discount voucher she had been looking for, tapped her payment card smartly on the handset, picked up her shopping and left with a polite “Thank you”. As I drove home, I found the scene kept playing over and over in my mind. Not because the checkout assistant had been rude or unhelpful, but because he had treated this customer differently due to her age. Almost 50 years ago the American gerontologist Robert N Butler coined the term ‘ageism’ to describe what happens when a person is stereotyped and discriminated against because they are older. Examples can cover anything from an unkind, age-related comment to losing your job – or not getting an interview in the first place – because others think your age makes you unemployable. It is estimated that 901 million people across the world are over the age of 60 and that number is predicted to reach 1.4 billion by 2030. Most people are now living longer thanks to improvements in health care, but instead of celebrating this as a positive development, it seems that we prefer to dwell on the negative aspects of ageing.
Who has the last laugh? Compared with the rest of Europe, Britain has one of the worst records when it comes to age discrimination, and the British sense of humour could be partly to blame for this. Selfdeprecating jokes may be a hallmark of our culture, but we can hardly complain about discrimination when we’re so ready to advertise the drawbacks of age so widely on greetings cards and items of clothing. There would be an outcry if similar statements were used to in connection with race or disability, but we are happy to send a birthday card or wear a t-shirt joking about age-related mental and physical issues that include bladder malfunctions, memory lapses, erectile dysfunction and hearing loss. The media is just as guilty when it comes to reinforcing negative stereotypes. When researchers from the universities of Exeter and Kent carried out a survey of 1,500 articles from tabloid and broadsheet newspapers from across the political spectrum, they found few positive stories about people aged 70 and over: the vast majority were concerned with topics such as the rising cost of pensions and the burden older people place on the NHS. Such is the stigma attached to growing old that some people seem to regard any age-related adjective as a potential insult. In 2016 TV presenter Jeremy Paxman, then aged 66, referred to the older generation as ‘virtual corpses’ after picking up a copy of the Mature Times – a publication aimed at the over-
82
50s – in a hotel lobby. Infuriated by the idea that the magazine might be deemed suitable reading material for him, he wrote: “Who wants to be called ‘mature’, like an old cheese? We all know that ‘mature’ means on the verge of incontinence, idiocy and peevish valetudinarianism.”
Celebrities and ageing However it seems the tide has started to turn. Hollywood is a place where all the isms – racism, sexism and ageism – are deeply entrenched, but after the recent wave of harassment scandals there are signs that its famous actors are now turning the spotlight on age discrimination and casual ageism. Helen Mirren has questioned cosmetic giant L’Oreal’s use of the term ‘anti-ageing’ for its products (because it subtly implies that ageing is something we should fight), while Meryl Streep has talked about the ageist attitudes of casting directors (she was offered three ‘witch’ roles as soon as she turned forty). Cameron Diaz believes that people power will eventually conquer ageism. She told Harper’s Bazaar: “We don’t have to look at ageing as a bad thing. We are the masses. We have the power to say, ‘I’m actually going to embrace this because I am valuable and I have more to offer than someone who hasn’t had the experience that I have’.” Just as these Hollywood ‘A’ listers are becoming role models for their peers, I must confess that the lady in the supermarket has become something of a role model for me. No one should have to suffer the indignities of casual ageism, but if and when it does happen to me, I hope to meet it with dignity, just as she did.

Six Things People Hate
ABOUT THE LAMBORGHINI URUS
Lamborghini has taken the wraps off its controversial Urus 4x4 – but not everyone thinks it looks bellissimo.
While an off-roader from a traditional sports car manufacturer is always going to raise eyebrows, it seems the internet is aghast at everything from the door handles to the new Italian car’s name. On the plus side, the Urus has a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 under the bonnet packing 641bhp, allowing the SUV to reach a top speed of 186mph – that’s quicker than the Bentley Bentayga. It also gets all manner of off-road tech designed to make it capable in all conditions, not just on the road. However, despite the incredible technology, a lot of people don’t like the way the Urus looks. So what exactly has got up people’s noses?
The rear door handles Once you’ve spotted them, they’re hard to un-see. For some reason, Lamborghini placed the handles on the rear wheel arch and they look like ugly barnacles. With many manufacturers working hard to integrate handles into creases and curves of bodywork so they don’t ruin lines, it appears Lamborghini’s designers forgot it needed them and stuck them on at the last minute.
The name Roughly translated, the name Urus refers to extinct wild relations of domestic cattle. We get the association with bulls – there’s one on the Lamborghini crest, after all – but this one seems just a little tenuous.
Lower down, the switchgear, steering settings and drive mode controllers have all been lumped together. It all looks just a little clumsy – and not particularly user-friendly.
Front sensor In order to top the latest safety tests, manufacturers have to incorporate the semi-autonomous technology in their cars. This relies on sensors at the front of the car. Most car makers tuck them away neatly in the front of the grille, but Lamborghini seems to have chosen to make it a ‘feature’. Unfortunately, it does stick out a fair bit and makes the front end of the car look less finished than it should – we’d have liked to have seen it fit flusher with the front bumper.
Rear styling The back of the Urus hasn’t gone down well with some internet commentators – most labelling it fussy and over-styled. The quad exhaust pipes appear to be angled out, rather than pointing directly rearward – a strange styling touch that will also take some getting used to.
The Urus moniker sounds clunky and it’s far from the sleek Lambo names of old – evocative names like Miura, Diablo and Countach. Even Gallardo has more panache than the new 4x4.
The interior It’s hard to ignore the influence that Lamborghini parent Audi has had over the Urus’ interior. The large infotainment screen looks good, but unfortunately that’s where the design appeal stops.
Side profile You’d expect a Lamborghini-made SUV to incorporate a little sleekness in its design, but unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the case with the Urus. The windscreen is very upright, while the rear three-quarters has a rather unfortunate hint of a Hyundai Veloster in it. Just don’t say that too loudly – it will upset the Italians.

Cusco
THE INCA CAPITAL IN PERU
The Incas got it right. Up in the Andes, this was a great location for their capital, a remote plateau ringed by mountains and blessed by fertile valleys. Even today Cusco appears almost unreal, a hidden city basking in subtropical highlands at 3,400 metres. Eucalyptus rise in the thin mountain air, red-roofed houses clamber up the lower slopes and the sound of Andean flutes echoes along the streets. Little is known about the early Killke settlers but the first Incas arrived in the 1200s, led by Manco Capac whose origins remain shrouded in legend. The city reached its apogee from 1438 onwards when, after defeating the Chacas, Pachacuti came to power. Ninth ruler and ‘world shaker’, he transformed the Inca kingdom into one of the world’s greatest empires and rebuilt the capital with highways, irrigation channels, terraced gardens, ceremonial plaza with a gold-covered altar, magnificent Temple of the Sun and other major buildings near the Saphi stream, the mythical origins of Cusco. That’s where the Spanish conquistadors entered the heart of the city in 1533, described by their leader Francisco Pizarro as ‘very noble and great’ with palaces, regular streets and a temple studded with gold, ‘fabulous beyond belief’. The Incas attempted to regain control in 1536 but failed after a ten months siege. Now the time had come to build churches, convent, cathedral and more, using the old Inca walls as foundations. Earthquakes have often damaged the Spanish buildings but Inca walls survived and in 1983 Cusco became a Unesco site for its combined Inca and colonial heritage.
86
The Santo Domingo Convent and Church is a striking example, built originally on the sacred site of Coricancha and the most important Temple of the Sun. Today one can still sense the haunting presence of the Incas drifting along the preHispanic walls. Other popular churches include La Merced and the Jesuits’, both famous for their Cusco Baroque style, while in the cathedral the Quechua builders, descendants of the Incas, made sure they left their mark. Guides will point out the suggestive phallic symbols, dear to the Incas, carved on the choir stalls but most surprising of all is the 18th century painting of the Last Supper. Forget bread and wine, here Jesus and the apostles are sharing Andean cheese, local fruit and a guinea pig, the traditional Peruvian dish. The cathedral opens on the Plaza de Armas, the colourful central square, which hosts two stunning festivals in June, the religious Feast of Corpus Christi and on the 24th - the winter solstice in the southern hemisphere - the Inca Festival of the Sun. A gentle stroll from the plaza, the artisans’ district of San Blas is a different world, winding through a maze of steps and alleyways where a mysterious twelve-angled stone holds pride of place in one of the best-preserved Inca walls. But on the hilltop above town, the largest stones of any Inca archaeological site are found in the Saksayhuman fortress, built by the Killke then massively extended by Pachacuti. Meanwhile, just along the path, a giant statue of Christ looks down on the old capital still shaped like a puma, the sacred animal of the Incas. With its rich heritage and vibrant colours, Cusco is indeed a lovely place to explore before heading to Machu Picchu on the scenic rail journey or one of the high altitude treks for the truly adventurous.

MOTOR & LEISURE
20 is Plenty There is no doubt our roads are getting safer. Annual road deaths from 2013 - 2016 are around 1,750, lower than the 1990s when they were well above 3,000. However, there has been an increase in fatalities in built-up areas involving elderly pedestrians. To try and reduce this figure, local authorities are introducing 20 mph speed limits in urban areas. This lower speed limit is not new: 20 mph zones have been used in lots of places for many years. So zone or limit: what’s the difference? 20 mph zones are usually found in urban areas and are designed to be ‘self-policing’, with the use of measures such as humps, pinch points and chicanes to slow traffic and indicate that the road is shared with pedestrians and other road users. A 20 mph limit area differs in that motorists are alerted to this lower speed limit either via repeated permanent signs or flashing indicators at key places and times, e.g. outside a school at pick-up time. Research shows that 20 mph limits are very effective at reducing deaths and injuries. Highlighting the reason for the lower speed limit, by the use of ‘Frail pedestrians’
or ‘Pedestrians in road ahead’ triangular warning signs or the yellow ‘school zone’ sign, also helps. Having been a witness to a fatal accident involving an elderly pedestrian, I welcome these speed-reduced zones. Frankly, in urban areas, going above the 30 mph limit only gets us to the next red light quicker, so what’s the issue with driving a little slower if it saves a life? By Iain Betson

Notes from your local Muxton Councillor Many thanks to those residents that have signed the petition asking Telford and Wrekin Council to start the process for establishing a separate Muxton Parish Council. When we have the required number, I will submit the petition to the Council and then a full public consultation will commence. It has been a pleasure meeting residents, though a little chilly at times! I am pleased to report that the footpath leading to the new gate by Muxton School has been completed, like many parents I am grateful especially after the recent snow.
Positive Discussions
WITH WEST MIDLANDS TRAINS
Telford & Wrekin Council met last month with West Midlands Trains and had really positive discussions with them. This included discussions about their planned additional trains which come into operation from December 2018, plans for increased parking at Telford Central, plans for improved customer information screens and cycle parking at all stations and the potential to further work with the Friends of Group at Wellington Station. They are still very busy with their initial mobilisation of the new franchise but it is positive that Telford & Wrekin Council is one of the first local authorities that they have come to speak to about how we can work together over the course of the franchise.

Deaf Awareness Week
14TH TO 20TH MAY
According to the charity Action on Hearing Loss (AOHL), in the UK 11 million of us (1 in 6) have hearing loss. Of that 11 million, 900,000 have severe or profound hearing loss. That’s why Deaf Awareness Week, organised by the UK Council on Deafness and backed by many hearing loss organisations, is so vital.
Why We Need to be More Aware
Hearing loss can cause social withdrawal, loneliness and depression, and it increases dementia risk by up to five times. AOHL’s research found that 70% of people with hearing loss feel it sometimes prevents them from fulfilling their potential at work and 60% of business leaders don’t feel they get enough support to help employees with hearing loss. On average, people wait 10 years before seeking help for hearing loss and only 40% of people who need hearing aids have them. Yet hearing aids are much smaller and more discreet than they used to be, and are free on the NHS. Using them reduces that increased dementia risk and can help sufferers of tinnitus, a condition that can also cause depression. That’s why it’s important to seek help (and urge others to do so) when hearing problems occur, and to do everything we can to make life easier for those with hearing loss.
Making Life Easier for People with Hearing Loss
Hearing aids are great, but they don’t recreate perfect hearing, so these tips are useful whether your listener has a hearing aid or not. • Ask them how they prefer to communicate They may use lip reading, a sign language such as British Sign Language (BSL) or a mixture of both. • Reduce background noise and consider acoustics Whatever degree of hearing they have and whatever setting their hearing aid is on, they will cope better with as little background noise as possible. TVs, radios, kettles, white goods, fans and low-level chatter can all hinder hearing, and hearing aids or cochlear implants can amplify this background noise. 9 out of 10 respondents in AOHL’s Speak Easy survey said background noise was the biggest problem they face when eating out. Whether you’re looking for a restaurant or meeting venue, try to find a quiet location with soft floor coverings, well-insulated from outside noise. • Make sure they know you’re talking to them We’re used to saying people’s names to get their attention, calling to someone over our shoulder and not always looking at them as we speak – particularly if we’re drawing their attention to something we’re looking at or working on. But if someone has hearing loss, you need to get their attention first by making eye contact, waving, or touching them on the shoulder (from the front or side). Again, it’s good to ask what their preference is. They may respond better to their name spoken clearly than a random word. • Make lip reading easier for them Lip reading can assist people with hearing problems, no matter what other strategies they use to communicate. Make it easier for them by: >
Facing them when you’re talking. This also helps them
interpret your facial expressions and visual cues. > Trying not to cover your mouth or chew when you’re talking. > Speaking clearly but naturally at a normal pace and volume. Overexaggerating your mouth movements hinders rather than helps others to read your lips, and shouting can overwhelm a sensitive hearing aid. > Avoiding standing somewhere that’s shadowy or overlybright. • Use body language Gestures and pointing can help, so even if you don’t know any signs, don’t let that stop you from gesturing to indicate directions and intentions. For instance, miming drinking and raising an eyebrow at someone is a universally recognised way to ask them if they want a drink. • Be considerate in a group situation We’re all guilty of interrupting and talking over each other to some degree, but if one of the group is hard of hearing, that makes things even more difficult for them. Try to take turns talking. It’s even more helpful if you raise your hand to indicate that you’re about to speak. • Remember that a picture can paint a thousand words (and subtitles help, too) If you’re giving a talk or delivering training, diagrams, pictures and video (with subtitles) can all help to explain and elaborate what you’re saying, and visual stimulus helps to attract attention and aid our learning whether we’re hard of hearing or not. Finally: Have patience. However frustrating it is for you to be unable to make yourself heard or understood by someone hard of hearing, it’s many times more frustrating for them to be unable to hear or understand you – so be patient. Think of other ways to get the message across, even if that means writing it on a piece of paper (or tapping it out on your phone or computer screen). Whatever you do, don’t give up.
