Plan Your Planting Many gardens are now looking a little tired, as summer flowers try hard to put on a reasonable show despite the tougher conditions and the fact that their season is drawing to a close. It is not a good time for planting shrubs or trees, as the soil tends to be fairly dry, so you can’t even make things look better with a shrub or two. So, do what you can to perk up flower beds and borders and then start to plan ahead for spring - right now garden centres are starting to take delivery of huge quantities of fabulous bulbs, just ready for planting, and a sure fire way to get your garden looking fabulous in those first few months of next year, and indeed for years to come. Get down to the garden centre sooner rather than later, so that you can have the pick of the bunch. Many bulbs will actually start to put down roots at the back end of summer and into autumn, giving them a head start and ensuring a fabulous display in spring, so prompt planting is advisable. The only thing you need to delay is the planting of tulips; these are best planted in October to help them avoid a nasty infection called tulip fire. Don’t forget that many mail order catalogues are available and these have an even bigger array of bulbs, often including many of the more unusual varieties, so send off for a few of these to ensure you have something particularly special to enjoy and to show off to your friends and neighbours! If ordering from catalogues you will need to get a move on, however, so send off for a few as soon as possible. Then enjoy putting your feet up with a cuppa and a pile of catalogues, ready to choose some delightful bulbs ready for planting in the next month or so. Before you set off to the garden centre, take a look at your borders - and indeed anywhere else in the garden - and decide where you can cram in a few bulbs. Remember, the great thing is they are often in flower before the rest of the garden gets going, and so they can be used to under-plant existing trees, shrubs and herbaceous flowers. Bulbs are an excellent way to make the most of every square metre of garden soil, and to ensure that your garden looks lovely as early as possible in the year. Many bulbs do really well in containers, so if you have a permanently planted up container this too can be underplanted with several layers of spring flowering bulbs. Use a transplanting trowel to plant in these tight spaces and that way you’ll minimise damage to the existing plants’ roots. If you are new to using bulbs and feel unsure of what goes together, don’t feel frightened to experiment. Alternatively, many catalogues and even some garden centres offer mixed

6

selections of bulbs for specific purposes and there are also some lovely packs of bulbs following colour themes. These usually represent good value for money too. Have you got a dull patch of lawn? Brighten it up in the early months by planting some small bulbs. Things like crocus or miniature narcissus are particularly useful, as once the flowers have faded you don’t have too much deteriorating foliage to cope with. In larger areas, consider planting up drifts of full-sized daffodils, but make sure that the grass beneath these trees or shrubs is not something you want to keep regularly mown, as you will have to wait for at least six weeks after flowering before you can safely remove the leaves of the daffodils. When choosing bulbs, always make sure they are in good condition before you buy. With a quick look through the packaging (bulbs are often hidden by large quantities of sawdust or wood shavings) you should be able to find the bulbs itself. Avoid any which are showing even the slightest signs of deterioration such as sunken brown spots, excessive softness or the presence of patches of bluish mould on their surface. Larger bulbs generally seem to do better than smaller versions of the same variety so, if possible, choose really good sized plump ones. If you want to buy large quantities of the same variety, then it may be possible to buy a net of bulbs from your garden centre or direct from a mail order specialist nursery. Ideally bulbs should be planted promptly, but if this isn’t possible make sure that you keep them in a cool and well ventilated spot before planting, as this is essential to reduce the risk of them deteriorating. Next month I’ll be looking at novel ways to make the best use of the gorgeous array of available bulbs, so plant some now and then treat yourself to a few more for September planting! Water, Water

EVERYWHERE

With summer well under way, many gardens are now feeling the need for a bit more water than the rain is giving them it is hard to believe that not long ago all the plants were suffering due to excess rainfall and waterlogged soil. Now it is important to forget those wet winter days and concentrate on doing everything you can to keep your garden looking good, despite increased temperatures and soil that is drier by the minute. There’s no doubt that you will need to do some watering, but how can you minimise the amount you apply, make best use of what you’ve got and still have a good-looking and productive garden? If possible, avoid making new plantings right now. It would be far better to wait until the autumn because, if planted out now, most trees, shrubs and climbers will find it harder to get properly established and are more likely to suffer serious setbacks too. However, if you do have any planting that you really can’t avoid, then make sure that you improve the soil texture before you begin. Dig and fork in plenty of garden compost, wellrotted manure or other bulky organic matter so that the soil is better equipped to retain moisture. This will make sandy soil hold water more effectively but you will also find it helps to decrease the chances of clay soil cracking. It may be hard work but it will make life a lot easier for the plants, and should also mean that you have to spend far less time watering later on. It is never too late to mulch: it might be high summer but it is still well worthwhile mulching beds, borders and your vegetable plot. Mulching is often thought to be something you have to do early in the year, but provided the soil is moist when you put the mulch in place, it will still serve you well. The mulch needs to be 2” - 3” (5 - 7.5 cm) deep and you can use shredded composted bark, composted chipped bark, cocoa shells or many of the numerous pebbles, shingles and so forth which are now available. If the soil is well watered before the mulch goes on, then it will really help to keep moisture in the soil and, as all the materials I’ve suggested will let plenty of rain through, when it does rain the plants will still benefit. Applying a good mulch will also help to keep down weeds, which will not only save you time but also prevent these thirsty plants from taking up valuable soil moisture. In drier areas of your garden, try to use plants which are particularly drought tolerant. Those with silvery or grey foliage such as the lavenders, Sedums (ice plants), rock roses (Helianthemum), rosemary and Convolvulus cneorum all tend to thrive in dry conditions, and are also more likely to do quite well if planted now, as compared to an average herbaceous or woody plant. Make sure that you make the most of any rain that does fall by

10

fitting a water diverter to the drain pipe which takes water from the guttering from your greenhouse, house, conservatory or garage. This can then divert the water straight into one or more water butts when it does rain. You can also fit a water diverter to the downpipe which takes water from your bath, hand basin or even the kitchen sink. Normal amounts of shampoo, bubble bath and washing up liquid should pose no threats to plants, and these detergents may help with pest problems such as greenfly. When you are watering, always make sure that you do this in the evening or extremely early in the morning, unless there’s no alternative. Watering at these times of day will drastically reduce the amount of water lost through evaporation, and also means that there is far less chance of the foliage or flowers getting scorched - as can happen if they are wetted in bright sunlight. Where possible use a watering can or hose with a gentle nozzle attachment and water only the areas where the water is needed. If the soil is very dry before you start to water, then sprinkle the surface gently with a light drizzling of water and return again a few minutes later - you will find that the water sinks in and penetrates down to the roots much more effectively. Excessive watering on a very dry surface, particularly one which has become ‘capped’, is likely to lead to a lot of run off and hence wastage. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to safely control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, biological controls, pull-out mini tunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

PETS: If you work full-time or simply need help to exercise your dog occasionally, you’ll need to look for a professional dog-walker. But how do you know that your beloved pet will be in safe hands? Here are a few things to consider: • Will your dog be walked by the same person each time? • Pet business insurance is a legal requirement for professional dog-walkers. • Will the walker need access to your home? If so, you’ll probably want to ask them for references. • They should also know how to administer first aid to the dogs if required. It’s also worth considering that if your dog has only ever experienced walks on its own with you, going out with other dogs could be threatening or upsetting.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN HIRING A DOG-WALKER Pet business insurance It is imperative that your dogwalker has business liability insurance to cover any damage caused by your dog when they are out, or conversely, anything that happens to your pet. This is actually a legal requirement for any pet business, and should cover damage to property as well as care of the animal. If you are out at work and the dog-walker has access to the house, their insurance should also cover the loss or theft of your keys. It is a good idea to go out with your dog and a potential new walker if possible, if only to give you peace of mind that your pet will be in good hands. http://blog.petplan.co.uk/05/2015/ advice/petplan-checklist/whatquestions-should-i-ask-my-dog-walkerinsurance-credentials-safety-and-more/

Beauty

SUMMER LOVIN'

It’s been a very long time coming, but summer is finally here. I’ve dusted off the sunnies and dug out my sandals, but couldn’t resist investing in a few new goodies… A new lip gloss is always on my summer shopping list. This year I’ve gone for Neal’s Yard’s organic Lip Gloss in Fig, £9.50. It’s rich in seed and fruit oils, so nourishes lips while giving them a decent burst of colour. It’s easy to apply and also has a subtle orange flavour and scent. Being a gloss, the colour doesn’t last that long, but it does leave my lips feeling moisturised. Next on my list is a new makeup palette. I like one that I can keep in my bag then whip out when there’s talk of cocktails. Marks and Spencer’s Autograph Face Palette ticks all the boxes. There are nine eyeshadows, two blushers and four highlighters, so it can take my look from day to night with ease. What’s more, it’s housed in a cute metallic clutch bag, which you can detach from the palette and use on its own. A bargain at just £15. Now I am not normally a fan of nettles. I seem to be forever getting stung by them when retrieving a football out of the long grass or trailing after my dog through the woods. But they do have some good qualities. Nettles are packed with amino acids and proteins, so can help to strengthen your hair. You can make an effective hair rinse by steeping leaves in hot water, but if that sounds like a bit too much effort, try Paul Mitchell’s Super Strong System. This three-step hair care range uses nettles and other botanical ingredients to strengthen hair, add shine and prevent sun damage. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and am suitably impressed. I am incredibly lazy when it comes to body lotion, so don’t tend to use it as much as I should when I’m covered up in the winter. So once summer hits, my legs are a bit of a sorry sight. I’ve been tackling them with daily exfoliation, followed by Believa’s Natural Intensiv Body Lotion, £23.99. It’s packed with argan oil, aloe vera, jojoba and shea butter, so is incredibly moisturising. Thankfully it’s also easily absorbed, as I’m usually running late for the school run. Natural Intensiv is very gentle, so is suitable for allergy sufferers, and may help with eczema and other dry skin complaints. British fragrance house Atkinsons is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. To celebrate, and mark the Queen’s 90th birthday year, it has launched a new perfume, Oud Save the Queen. Inspired by the Orient, this fragrance is bursting with spicy, exotic notes, including bergamot, jasmine, orange blossom and, of course, oud. However, there are also notes of the quintessentially British Earl Grey tea. This fragrance is on my wish list, rather than shopping list, unfortunately, as it’s an eye watering £150.

Beauty

AND THE BEACH

Beauty buys to see you through those hazy summer days. When it comes to packing for holidays, I tend to fill every last millimetre of my case. So I do like products that save space and weight. Lush’s shampoo bars do both. Plus, as they’re solid bars, they can go in your hand luggage. There are a fair few to choose from, but my current favourite is Montalbano, £5.95, because of its fresh lemon scent. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not nearly as evangelical as I should be about applying suntan lotion, but I am trying to do better. The fact that every year more than 14,000 people in the UK develop a malignant melanoma is a pretty good motivator. As an extra incentive, UVA rays also lead to premature wrinkles and age spots, and they can penetrate skin even when it’s cloudy. So this summer, I’m slapping on the suntan lotion. I tend to use factor 25, but on days when I can get away with an SPF of 15, I usually reach for Green People’s Sun Lotion

with Natural Tan Accelerator,

£20. It’s a great choice if you have sensitive skin (which I do), as it’s very gentle, so unlikely to irritate. It’s also rich in seed oils, so leaves my skin feeling moisturised. The natural tan accelerator has been shown to increase tanning by up to 25% and can make a tan last much longer. I admit it can be a bit of a faff rubbing in suntan lotion, so I’m rather tempted by Colorescience Sunforgettable. With an SPF of 50 it gives great protection, but as it’s a loose mineral powder, you just brush it on. You can wear it on top of makeup and it’s available in three shades – fair, medium and tan. For me, the price is the downside. At £41.50, it’s certainly not wallet-friendly. But it is supposed to last for ages, and avoiding the scratchy, sticky sand/lotion mix might just make it worth the price, see www.beauty-product-online.co.uk. A day in the sun can leave skin feeling dry and dehydrated. I tend to use cocoa butter for putting the moisture back, but I am looking forward to trying Vichy’s new Ideal Soleil After Sun, £13. Key ingredients include shea oil and blackcurrant seed oil, so it’s rich in omega fatty acids, which can really help to boost hydration. What’s more, you can use it on dry skin or in the shower. I love treating my toenails to a professional gel polish, but if I don’t have time, I always have a few nail polishes at home to choose from. Crabtree and Eveyln’s Nail Lacquer in Wisteria, £6, is at the top of my shopping list. It’s just the right shade of blue to gives a good pop of colour, while being neutral enough to work with most outfits.

Toyah

ACOUSTIC, UP CLOSE & PERSONAL AT ENGINUITY

After Toyah’s sell-out performance last year, the household name, pop icon, TV presenter and stage/ screen actress is returning to the Engine Shop at Enginuity in Coalbrookdale on Friday evening, 7th October. ‘Toyah: Acoustic, Up Close & Personal’ is a wonderful chance to experience the 1980s pop superstar in an intimate setting where music and stories take centre stage.

this is a show which lifts the lid on working in the entertainment business. 2015 saw Toyah act in the acclaimed cult British feature film Ahhhhhhhh! directed by Steve Oram, while 2016 will also see the release of more films in which Toyah has roles including Extremis, Lies We Tell and Kaleidoscope Man. As ever, Toyah’s annual concert diary is also packed with summer festivals, acoustic shows and electric gigs with her full band. Her transatlantic rock band The Humans featuring Bill Rieflin (King Crimson, REM) and Chris Wong recently released their third album Strange Tales. Priced at £20 per person (no concession) tickets to ‘Toyah: Acoustic, Up Close & Personal’, are available in advance only. They can be purchased online or from the Ironbridge Visitor Information Centre and any of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum shops. Tickets include admission into Enginuity from 5pm, the auditorium opens at 7pm and the performance starts at 8pm. There will be an interval when light refreshments and bar drinks will be available; Ironbridge Gorge Museum Passports are not valid for this event.

This lively, entertaining and revealing show sees Toyah performing an unplugged set of her much-loved hits and classic songs. Guitarists Chris Wong and Colin Hinds will accompany Toyah on meticulous and melodic acoustic versions of It’s A Mystery, Thunder In The Mountains, I Want To Be Free and Good Morning Universe through to Sensational, a track from a recent national TV advertising campaign starring Patsy Kensit. Toyah will also be recalling stories from her colourful, 35 year career, which has included roles in Calamity Jane, Cabaret, Peter Pan, Jubilee and Quadrophenia. From filming pop videos on horseback at 5am in the morning to acting alongside Katharine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier

For further information call the Ironbridge Tourist Information Centre on 01952 433 424 or visit www.ironbridge. org.uk; more details about Toyah can be found on www.toyahwillcox.com.

Average Rents Rise The average rent on new tenancies has risen by just over five per cent nationally over the past year - good news for landlords and those considering a property investment. The national Homelet Rental Index figures have not come as a major surprise to the property management team here at Nock Deighton, as we have seen demand for rental property continue to rise so it’s only natural

that rents will increase. Here in Shropshire we are finding that rental accommodation is being snapped up by tenants very quickly, and as house prices continue to rise, rents will follow. It’s positive news for landlords who can use the increased rents to cover the various tax increases they are having to deal with.

those with the means to do so, because the demand for rental property is showing no signs of slowing down. The figures issued by the Homelet Rental Index show the average monthly rent is now £764, 5.1 per cent higher than this time last year.

Lioncourt Homes

Lioncourt Homes who are building new homes at Heritage View in Hadley, Telford, has recently celebrated its tenth year in business. This anniversary was celebrated with the Annual Company Day at Cheltenham Racecourse, where they had many reasons to celebrate. Lioncourt’s anniversary coincided with the recognition from the Sunday Times as being one of the fastest growing businesses in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, they have received the accolade of being the fastest growing house builder in the UK. And if that’s not enough Lioncourt also retained their 5 Star Quality Rating from HBF, one of only 14 housebuilders in the whole of the UK to receive this accolade. At the Annual Company Day, Chief Executive, Colin Cole presented the achievements of the previous 12 months together with the challenges for the new financial year. There were also a number of amusing aspects to the speech as well as 10 year service awards as part of a review of the Group’s history. Following the presentation all staff were treated to a well-deserved day at the races where everyone confirmed that they were far less effective at gambling than running a successful house building business!

22

CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY The expansion of Lioncourt over the ten years has developed the company from a small regional property developer to one of the largest home builders in Central England. Founding Executive Directors Colin Cole and Neil Chandler have stated the success of Lioncourt is attributable to the culture, work ethic and expertise of the whole team. Lioncourt’s success over this period can also be accredited to Founder Executive Directors Colin Cole and Neil Chandler, whose endeavour and expertise has guided the company into the favourable position today. The company still however aspire for further growth and when asked about the future potential of the company, Colin said 'We are only at the start of the Lioncourt story. We have significant growth planned for the period ahead and we have excellent managers and staff developing throughout the business as part of our succession plans. But for now it is time to reflect and celebrate this latest success.' Perhaps this desire could see Lioncourt become the largest property developer in the UK, with its base very firmly in Worcestershire.

Snowed under… With plethora of new properties coming on to the sales market with Barker Healey Property in the last few weeks, no doubt fuelled by the recent press coverage on prices across the U.K. rising, I have been kept extremely busy preparing marketing details and putting our lovely glossy brochures together! In order to ensure I retain our promised turn-around time of 3 working days, this has meant more than a few late nights but I guess that is the nature of being a smaller, independent agency (and a slight control freak at that!!). That said it is always worth it when customers are really pleased with their marketing details and at that point, the rest of my team spring into action matching out the details to potential buyers and subsequently arranging viewings and latterly gaining feedback and hopefully – acceptable offers! Before all of that can happen, the first step is always to arrange a valuation. All our valuations are free and there is no obligation to commit at this stage. You will be provided with a comprehensive information pack which contains full details of the service we provide, along with a specimen brochure, some handy tips on how best to present your property for

24

IN SUMMER

sale and also, what to expect once you have accepted an offer. As I always say, valuations are only current to the time at which they are conducted, and are largely based on the recent sale values of similar properties in the area. Each and every property is different, however, and it is an estate agent’s job to mentally calculate the factors about someone’s home which will increase or decrease the price which a buyer is likely to pay. What must also be taken into account is how quickly an individual seller would like to sell, because although this may sound irrelevant, it is basic common sense that the lower the price of something, the quicker someone is likely to buy it! My advice to anyone thinking of selling is to get two or three valuations and do not necessarily be persuaded to go with the agent who delivers the highest valuation, purely on this basis. Always look at the complete service which is being offered and ask as many questions as you can to get all the information you need to make an informed decision!

New Leader

FOR TELFORD & WREKIN COUNCIL

Newly elected Council leader Shaun Davies said: “I am deeply honoured to be elected leader of Telford & Wrekin Council. “Telford & Wrekin Council has achieved so much in the past five years, in spite of the most challenging climate ever due to cuts in Government grant. “I wish that I could offer some reassurance as to our financial position. I can however give my absolute commitment to do everything I can to work for the good of our borough and the people we serve. Together, we will do everything we can to secure income for this Council to help limit cuts to key services while making a very forceful case to Government over our funding. “I look forward to continuing to work to make our borough an even better place and one of which I know we are all very proud. “My priorities for the next 12 months include working to secure hospital services at the Princess Royal Hospital for the future and ensuring fairer Government funding for the borough. By the Government’s own figures Telford & Wrekin Council’s settlement is already almost £12m per year below average. “I want to ensure that we get the money we are entitled to. I am also keen that we looking for additional funding that can help to protect many vital Council services from even deeper cuts.”

FOR YOUR MOVING DAY

Moving day is looming and you realise that you can't put off the packing any longer. Have you got enough boxes? What about those breakables and family heirlooms? Think ahead and reduce the potential for disaster on moving day. Here are a few packing tips: 1. Pack early. Try to start your packing at least 2 months before you move if you can.

JAYS REMOVALS & STORAGE LTD We are a family run business and deliver a professsional removal to the highest standard. We ensure our customers are 100% happy with the work we do and offer excellent value for money.

YOUR HOME, SAFE IN OUR HANDS

2. Pack one room at a time. 3. Declutter - great chance to throw out stuff you really don't need. 4. Be careful not to overload boxes, making them too heavy can cause problems lifting them or may come open when moving them. 5. Fill empty gaps - use old newspapers, packing papers, or just old rags to fill gaps in the boxes. This should secure the items for the ride. 6. Label your boxes - ensure you at least write on which room the box should go to, brief contents is also really useful. W 7. Sensible packing - keep heavier items at the the bottom of the box - keep breakable items together and clearly label the box as fragile. 8. Put all hazardous materials, such as paint, bleach and aerosols, into a separate box and keep them away from the rest of your stuff. 9. Pack important documents together, such as birth and marriage certificates, and keep them in a safe place and clearly labelled. 10. Prepare a box of essentials for move in day - such as kettle, cups, coffee/tea, snacks, tea towels, cleaning products etc...

BEER

www.thebarleynewport.co.uk

OF THE MONTH

It’s the fashion among ale-drinkers to while away a hot August afternoon with a golden ale – I have a couple of beery suggestions that are still refreshing and still hoppy, but less abrasive and altogether more mellow. Founded in 1777, Dorset’s Badger Brewery has become a trailblazer in the bottled beer market, with an innovative range with ingredients like liquorice, ginger, and elderflower; when you uncap a bottle of 4.5% alcohol Golden Glory, you know what’s in it: peach blossom. So – a fruity beer for that summer sundowner? Why not? The Belgians use loads of fruit, and they’re (supposedly) the best brewers in the world. Golden Glory pours an attractive dark gold with a thick foamy head. The nose is heady with peach to the exclusion of all else; on the palate, though, the peach is less pronounced. There’s still an overtone, but the more traditional malt comes through strongly, and then in the finish there’s what there ought to be – hop bitterness. St Peter’s Brewery has a huge bottled range includes grapefruit beer, honey beer, a stout, a porter, an IPA and many others; but in August we’ll try the Organic Ale at 4.5% alcohol. The beer is a dark gold colour, and there’s a hint of biscuity malt offset by lemony hops in the aroma. The mouth feel is smooth and creamy, with a palate that balances rich toffee, an overtone of marmalade, and just a suggestion of barley wine that makes the beer drink above its weight. The finish is all hop, though, long and dry and bitter, making it the perfect quencher for all that fine August weather I hope we’ll be getting. by Ted Bruning

Restaurant Review

FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE

The Redhouse Inn

Wellington Road, Lilleshall TF10 9EW

T: 01952 603768

Having recently undergone a major refurbishment The Redhouse Inn has been transformed both inside and out. The previously dark dated interior is now gone and has been replaced with a modern country farmhouse feel. Access to the restaurant is at the rear of the building with direct access from the car park and the bar area has its own entrance to the side of the property. There is an outside seating area both at the rear of the restaurant and also off the bar - a fantastic outside seating area has been constructed using sleepers to create booth seating for al fresco dining (weather permitting!). The restaurant now feels large and spacious with its high beamed ceilings and there is plenty of warm lighting which creates a welcoming relaxed feel. There is a mix of textures that have been used throughout the restaurant and bar area including wood, tiles, leather and patterned fabrics, some walls have been wallpapered with a mix of styles and some have been painted in various shades of grey. We were shown to our table by our waiter and seated at a round table in the bay window looking out onto the new garden area. The bar has been completely restocked with some new ranges of beers, lagers and four real ales on tap. Nik ordered a pint of the East Coast IPA and I had a glass of Sauvignon. For starters Nik ordered the Seared Scallops & Black Pudding and I chose the Bacon & Wild Mushroom Tart.

30

Nik said his fresh juicy scallops were perfectly seared and the chunks of black pudding added a lovely richness to the dish. My tart had a delicate light pastry case with a delicious bacon, mushroom and cheese filling, served with rocket and a drizzle of balsamic glaze. Nik opted for the Braised Lamb Shank for his main and I ordered the Slow Roasted Belly Pork & Black Pudding.

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT Nik had a large lamb shank which had been slow cooked to perfection as the meat just fell away from the bone and was served on a bed of wholegrain mustard mash with sweet carrots and a rich redcurrent gravy - definitely one to try! My dish consisted of two square portions of belly pork which were succulent and tender, they were served with soft fondant potato, a large slice of black pudding, glazed apples and pears which all added great textures and flavours and the peppercorn sauce gave a lovely kick to the dish. For dessert Nik chose the classic Strawberry Cheescake and I opted for one of my favourite desserts, the Lemon Tart. Niks cheesecake had a buttery biscuit base with a light creamy cheese centre, topped with fruity strawberry compote and accompanied with a pot of freshly whipped cream. My lemon tart had a light shortcrust pastry filled with a delicious zesty soft lemon filling, a very refreshing end to my meal. A carvery is still available daily and is served from noon until 2pm and a lunchtime menu is also available from noon and is available through till 5pm. The evening menu starts from 5pm until 8:30pm. On Sundays only the carvery is available and is served between noon and 5pm. New managers Andy and Ruth Newman are delighted with the new look restaurant and have lots of exciting plans and ideas for future events. You can keep up to date with events and view the latest menus on the website at www.redhouseinn.co.uk. All the food is freshly prepared to order and they use as many local suppliers as possible for their produce. With the amazing transformation of this restaurant and its new staff and new menu - I would highly recommend a visit to see what you think for yourself. Bookings are advisable.

Recipe

TROPICAL FRUIT ROULADE A lovely light and fruity dessert that’s ideal for summer entertaining. You can vary the fruit filling, try fresh chopped peaches and raspberries or strawberries and blueberries if preferred.

Ready in 1 hour (plus cooling)

Serves 8 INGREDIENTS: • 5 large eggs •

165g caster sugar

• 4 tbsp plain flour • 300ml double cream • 2 passion fruit • 1 small ripe mango

1.

Preheat the oven to 180/fan 160C/Gas 4. Grease a 33cm x 23cm Swiss roll tin and line the base and sides with lightly greased baking paper.

2. Place the eggs and 150g of the caster sugar in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water and whisk with an electric whisk until the mixture is very pale and thick (see tip). Remove from the heat and continue whisking until the mixture leaves a trail when the whisk is lifted. 3. Sift the flour over the mixture and fold in gently with a metal spoon. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and tilt the tin to level the surface. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden and just firm to the touch. 4. Invert the roulade out onto a sheet of baking paper dusted with the rest of the sugar. Cover with a clean damp tea towel and leave to cool completely. 5. Whip the cream in a large bowl until softly peaking. Scoop the seeds and flesh from the passion fruit and fold into the cream. Peel the mango and cut a few thin slices to decorate the roulade; finely chop the rest. Remove the paper lining from the roulade and trim the edges. Spread the passion fruit cream over the sponge and top with the chopped mango. 6. Using the sugared paper as a guide, roll up the roulade from one short end. Transfer to a serving platter and decorate with the reserved mango slices just before serving.

TIP The trick to a really light and fluffy fatless sponge is to whisk the mixture over the simmering water for at least 7-8 minutes to incorporate as much air as possible, and to fold in the flour very gently to avoid knocking out too much air.

You Can Erase Years

FROM YOUR FACE

Safely, painlessly and without surgery with facial rejuvenation acupuncture at SB Sports Injury & Physiotherapy Clinic For thousands of years the Chinese have known that beauty comes from within. At least as early as the Sing Dynasty (960 AD -1270 AD) acupuncture rejuvenation practices were employed for the Empress or Emperor’s Concubines. The Chinese discovered and utilised ways to change the energy flow within the body to initiate the healing process for rejuvenation. It therefore makes sense that treating the underlying cause of why someone is aging is preferable to masking the outward symptoms and allowing further decline and dysfunction to continue within the body. Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is often referred to as an acupuncture ‘facelift’, however, it is more than a cosmetic procedure, it is in fact a rejuvenation and revitalization process designed to help the whole body look and feel younger. Facial rejuvenation acupuncture involves the insertion of hair thin needles into specific areas of the face, ears, hands and legs along meridians of energy called Qi (pronounced chee). This manipulation of the movement of energy in turn stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. The Chinese discovered that many meridians either begin or end on the face while some have internal branches that go to the face.

What are the effects? Facial rejuvenation acupuncture has been reported to potentially erase as many as 5-15 years from the face. Fine lines may be eliminated and deeper wrinkles diminished. Bags under the eyes can be reduced, jowls firmed, puffiness eliminated, lifting of

38

droopy eyelids or double chins minimised. Other results include moisturizing of the skin with increased local circulation of blood and lymph to the face, increased collagen production, muscle tone, tightening of pores, brightening of the eyes, improving hormonal balance to help acne, reduction of stress evident in the face. All in all bringing out the innate beauty and radiance of the individual. The effectiveness of acupuncture is due to its direct manipulation of the body’s energy system – balancing removing blockage of adding energy when necessary. A 1996 report in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture reported that among 300 cases treated with facial acupuncture 90% had marked effects with one course of treatment. These effects included improvement of the elasticity of facial muscles, levelling of wrinkles, a ruddier complexion and overall rejuvenation, not confined to the face.

What is the course of treatment? Generally it consists of 12 treatment sessions. Each person responds differently depending on their condition and lifestyle prior to treatment. The effects become more noticeable and lasting on or about the seventh session. Following the initial course of treatment, maintenance sessions can prolong the results of 5 -10 years. Facial acupuncture is an excellent alternative to Botox and Cosmetic surgery. It is a sae, virtually painless procedure, has no side effects or risk of discomfort. Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is a subtle rejuvenation that can take years off one’s face safely and naturally whilst improving overall health. Men Over 50

DON’T GET WRECKED, GET CHECKED!

Men in the Telford area are being invited to attend a special event later this year where they will be able to get checked for prostate cancer free of charge.

“It has been proven that early diagnosis of prostate cancer results in better outcomes,” says Lion John Marsh, “and that is why every man in an ‘at risk’ category should come along and get checked. The message is simple – ‘you can’t afford to be shy if you don’t want to die’.”

After discovering the heart-stopping facts about prostate cancer, Ironbridge Lions approached retired Consultant Urological Surgeon, Mr David Baxter-Smith, to help them stage the event which will be free to all men who attend.

• All men over 50

Tests will be provided by Mr Baxter-Smith, an authority on prostate cancer who has worked closely with Lions clubs across the country to make screening more widely available, and professional Phlebotomists will be on hand to take blood samples. Prostate cancer affects around 45,000 men in the UK every year. Of those, almost one third will die from the disease. In Shropshire alone, around 250 men are diagnosed annually with prostate cancer.

Look out for the prostate cancer screening event that will take place later this year.

Despite these frightening statistics there is no national screening programme for prostate cancer, which is why Ironbridge Lions, together with Ironbridge Rotary Club, are urging all local men in categories ‘at risk’ from the disease to attend the event and get checked by having a simple blood test.

Modern Technology

DON'T LET IT DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH

Modern technology is a great tool for communication and information sharing, but it’s not always good for our health. The problem: Poor Sleep. Blue light emitted by many of our phones, tablets, monitors and flat-screen TVs can adversely affect melatonin, our sleep-inducing hormone. Lack of sleep affects memory, mood, concentration, reaction times and immunity, and can stimulate appetite. Long-term, it may affect language processing and our sense of time, and contribute to serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease. The Answer: Turn devices off for an hour before bedtime and reduce screen brightness in the evening.

The problem: CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome) CVS symptoms include eye muscle strain, eye irritation, blurred or double vision, headaches and neck pain. It’s caused by asking our eyes to cope with constant glare and focus readjustment as they flick between different images and text. The Answer: ••Install a dimmer switch in your room and/or a glare filter for your screen, and adjust your monitor’s brightness and contrast. Position your monitor 20-28 inches away. ••Follow the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, look away from your screen for 20 seconds (preferably at an object around 20 feet away).

The problem: Prolonged Sitting Research shows that prolonged sitting can seriously damage our health and shorten life expectancy - even if we exercise regularly. The Answer: Avoid prolonged sitting when possible, but if it’s unavoidable, break it up with short stints of activity, e.g. housework or a lunchtime football game. Also try: ••Standing on public transport. ••Walking/biking all or part of the way to work. ••Investing in a standing, treadmill or convertible desk (or conversion equipment for your normal desk or treadmill). ••Sitting on a yoga ball, which requires constant but subtle effort to stay balanced. ••Active Sitting: try raising your heels up and down; contracting your stomach muscles; raising and lowering your leg from the knee or the hip height; swivelling your office chair with your hips; tensing, stretching and bending your arms; rolling your shoulders.

42

The problem: Aches, Pains and Poor Posture Using flat keyboards, laptops, mice and incorrectly positioned equipment can cause back pain, RSI (repetitive strain injury) and Carpal Tunnel syndrome (tingling, numbness or pain in the hand, caused by compression of the median nerve). The Answer: Think Ergonomics ••Sit as close as possible to your desk and keep it clear underneath to avoid twisting. ••Set your computer monitor at eye level. Use laptops on a desk with an attached keyboard and raised monitor whenever possible. ••Keep hands and wrists warm, and use ergonomic keyboards, mice and mouse-mats. Wrist supports may help. ••Check your posture regularly. Beware slouching, leaning forward or to one side, craning your neck or hunching. ••Adjust your chair so that: || Your back meets the chair back and your lumbar region is supported (a cushion that fits the small of your back may help). || Your knees are level with or slightly higher than your hips. || Your feet rest comfortably on the floor. || Your elbows are at 90° to your desktop. || Your arms are slightly raised at the shoulders. || The seat doesn’t dig in behind your knees but does support most of your upper thigh (three inches between seat and calf is ideal). To avoid the risks modern technology poses while still enjoying its benefits, remember: sit up, stand up and switch off occasionally!

Come Back No longer a dull or dated option, modern carpet can be both practical and fashionable, offering an almost unlimited choice of colour and pattern and, perhaps surprisingly, an enormous range of textures, too. Why choose carpet?

TO CARPET moderate, general, heavy and extra heavy domestic use, which will give you a good indication of how suitable a carpet will be for each room. Obviously, a carpet in a hallway will need to be very tough – perhaps a high-end 80:20 twist classified for heavy domestic use, while in a living room (general domestic) you’ll probably require a combination of a luxury look with a robust performance, such as a loop or velvet, and a spare bedroom could be much more delicate – a velvet or Saxony classified for light domestic, for example. If you choose a carpet that is suitable for general use, you can lay it throughout to create a seamless look that pulls a decorating scheme together. Carpets are inadvisable in kitchens, and best avoided in bathrooms, though if you insist, there are splash-proof types available.

Wood floors are timeless and durable, tiles practical and laminates and vinyls inexpensive. So why opt for carpet? Well, carpet is, indisputably, soft and comfortable underfoot – especially in a bedroom or if there are small children crawling around. It absorbs sound – which helps if you have teenagers who are prone to clattering up and Padstow candy spot carpet, £69.99 per square metre, Brintons, tel 0800 505055, www.brintons.co.uk. down the stairs. On the downside, you can see them in your own environment and your own light. although carpet won’t scratch, scuff or splinter, it may stain If you are redecorating from floor to ceiling, it’s a good idea to and wear. Regular vacuuming is the only maintenance it needs, choose the carpet first and ensure that the rest of the scheme but accidental spills can be a nightmare to deal with, and it’s co-ordinates with its colour and pattern – remember, the floor unlikely to last longer than stone, tiles or wood. is the largest area you will see in a room, so it’s important to get it right. When you are doing building work, however, always install the carpet last, to protect it from splashes and Deciding which carpet to buy can be a complex and confusing spills. Last, but by no means least, when you work out your business. As a general rule, the deeper the pile and the more budget don’t forget the cost of underlay and fitting. Get your luxurious the finish, the greater care the carpet will need. The room professionally measured to ensure that you don’t overshorter and denser the pile, the better it is likely to wear – if or under-order and when replacing a carpet, always buy new you fold the carpet back and part the pile, you should not underlay. Not only will it ensure that your new carpet sits be able to see the backing. So your final choice will probably properly and wears evenly, but it could prolong its life by up involve trading off softness and comfort against durability to 40 per cent. and resilience. Choosing a carpet

CARPET FIBRES

Wool: Naturally flame-retardant and resilient to compression, wool is warm, soft, durable and does not soil easily. 100% wool is a sumptuous choice. The best wools come from Britain and New Zealand. Nylon: Extremely hard-wearing, nylon has the greatest abrasion resistance of all fibres. It takes dye and stain-resistance treatments well. Polypropylene: Inherently resistant to stains and abrasions, polypropylene wears well and is value-for-money. It is used mainly in plain twists, loop patterns and saxonies. Polyester: Stain-resistant, light and bulky, polyester has a lustrous appearance and is mainly used in plain, thick saxonies. Mixes: In order to enhance performance, give a particular feel or reduce price, the four fibres may be blended together. Pure wool, for example, is very expensive, so cheaper options mix a synthetic fibre with wool. The most common blends are 80% wool with 20% nylon (often recommended as the ideal combination of softness and strength); 80% wool with 10% nylon and 10% polyester; and 50% wool with 50% polypropylene.

46

CARPET PILE

Loop: Pile tufts are left uncut and can either feel smooth or are like natural flooring such as sisal and Loop: The pile tufts are left uncut and can either feel smooth or may replicate the appearance of natural flooring such as sisal and coir. Not a good idea if you have pets, as animal claws and loop piles do not mix. Cord: The loops are pulled tight against the backing, giving a very low pile. Saxony: A deeper pile with a soft, sensuous feel and appearance. Very popular in bedrooms. Shag: Extra-long pile – watch out for high heels. Twist: A loop pile that uses yarn with a higher twist than usual to give a coarse, rugged surface. The best types twist two yarn ends tightly together for a very hard-wearing carpet. Velvet: A sheared, short pile with a smooth, luxurious finish.

Digital Days A new series of ‘Digital Days’ teacher-led summer workshops for children aged 6 - 15 years is being hosted by Enginuity, the Ironbridge Gorge Museums’ design and technology discovery centre at Coalbrookdale, between 1st and 18th August. Previous experience is not essential for any of the sessions. The first in the series is a two-day robotics project on 1st and 3rd August when children can construct their own programmable robot based on an EZ-Robot ‘Adventure bot’ and use it to complete a series of challenges. Accessories will also be designed and produced on Enginuity’s 3D printer ready to fit to the robots. Suitable for children aged 9 -15 years, the workshop will take place between 10am and 4pm on both days and is priced at £40. On 4th and 16th August 6 -13 year olds can take part in Minecraft workshops. During the morning (10am-1pm) the youngsters will explore, play and discover the world of Minecraft within a safe and secure digital environment; once the basics have been mastered the session leader will set challenges and competitions. In the afternoon (2pm-5pm) the children will learn how to build and programme virtual working machines using a range of advanced blocks including Redstone. Previous experience would be beneficial for

NEW SUMMER WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN AT ENGINUITY the afternoon workshops. Each morning or afternoon session is £20 per child, or book the full day at just £30 for both sessions. Two days of LEGO workshops are also planned on 5th and 17th August. On 5th August, either 10am-1pm or 2-5pm children aged 6 – 13 years will work with motorised LEGO WeDo kits to build and programme a variety of machines. Meanwhile on 17th August, again either 10am-1pm or 2-5pm, older children aged 9 – 14 years will be working with LEGO MindStorms to construct and programme a robot to solve a variety of problems including mazes, moving objects and racing. Priced at £20 per session, both workshops use a programming language similar to Scratch. Finally on 18th August a Claymation workshop will explore how to tell a story through animation. Children will create backdrops, figures and objects then add their own sounds and voice overs to complete short films which can be shared or uploaded online. Suitable for 6 – 13 year olds, this session will take place between 10am and 4pm and is priced at £30 per child. Parents are welcome to leave their children at the workshops or stay and take part along with their child. As food and drink are not provided, children should also bring their own refreshments. GCSE Courses for Adults From September 2016 adults across Shropshire, will have the opportunity to complete a GCSE in English or maths fully funded with County Training. The training provider will be offering GCSE courses to adults for the second year running, as a response to the Government strategy to improve post-16 numeracy and literacy. Government research has found that 40% of pupils do not get GCSE grades A* to C in English and maths by age 16 and 90% of those don’t achieve it by age 19. A GCSE at grade C or above is a valuable qualification for adults and the GCSEs will address many of the skills that employers tell the government they need. The courses will start in September 2016, lasting the full academic year, with sessions for each GCSE held once a week. All participants will have an allocated course tutor to help them progress through all components of the qualification; from teaching the content to exam and assessment preparation. Last year the courses were extremely popular and 61% of County Training learners achieved grade C - A*. County Training’s English and maths Curriculum Manager, Craig Birch, commented “Achieving a GCSE in English or maths will not only increase your confidence in work but will also demonstrate to employers that you have the numeracy and literacy skills they are looking for. It can also increase your job prospects and opportunities for promotion, as well as enhancing your CV.”

COMING SEPTEMBER 2016!

The GCSE courses will be funded by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA). To be eligible for funding, candidates must be aged 19 or over and must not already have a GCSE in English/maths at grade C or above. The courses are also available to those who are employed or unemployed and candidates can choose to complete either one or both subjects. County Training are offering taster sessions to those who would like to find out more. An English taster session will take place on 30th August 2016 in Telford. For the maths GCSE, the taster will be running on the 1st September 2016 in Telford. To attend a taster session, it is essential to book a place by contacting County Training. If you live in others areas of Shropshire and are interested in achieving these qualifications, please get in touch – depending on interest, courses may be run countywide, to include Ludlow, Oswestry and Whitchurch. County Training is one of the largest work-based learning providers in Shropshire, also providing training and apprenticeships in the following areas: Brewing; Business and Administration; Childcare; Education; Customer Service; Hair and Beauty; Health and Social Care; Horse Management; Hospitality and Catering; IT; Motor Vehicle; Management and Warehouse and Storage, as well as a wide range of recreational part time courses at ‘The Gateway Education and Arts Centre’ in Shrewsbury. The organisation secured a ‘good’ Grade 2 in its latest Ofsted report, with many outstanding elements, placing it as a leading training provider in Shropshire. For more information, to register your interest or to book onto a taster session please contact County Training on 0345 6789023 or email enquiries@ctapprenticeships.co.uk.

It’s a great honour to represent the whole of the borough and I will pride myself on maintaining that community focus throughout this year.”

AND DEPUTY MAYOR FOR TELFORD AND WREKIN She is currently head of HR for Bethphage, a local charity which supports people with learning disabilities while undertaking her role as a borough ward member for Woodside. He became a borough councillor at last year’s election. Far From the Madding Crowds

GADGETS FOR GOING OFF THE BEATEN TRACK

For many people, late summer is the perfect time to go off the beaten track and explore, whether that’s by hiking, cycling or a combination of the two. And with the right gadgets you can be sure that you’ll love to go a-wandering, no matter where you’re headed. If you like to listen to music, podcasts or ebooks when you’re roaming, or if you just fancy some music while you swim in a lake, waterproof headphones are a great idea: sets such as the X-1 Surge Mini (£35) are 100% waterproof to a depth of 12 feet, but don’t forget to buy a waterproof case for your iPod or phone: you can pick up a universal waterproof case for less than £10, although make sure you check the specs carefully: water resistant and waterproof are very different things, and the former is only designed to protect your device against accidents, not deliberately going underwater. If you’d rather drink water than swim in it, a refillable water bottle is a great investment. £14 gets you the leak-proof, durable Kleen Kanteen, while the £6 Snugpak is designed to be clipped to your backpack. If you’re on a city trip with a messenger bag, the Memobottle (around £22) is shaped like a book rather than a bottle so it won’t make your bag all bulky. And of course, don’t forget the humble Thermos (from around £8), which is as good at keeping soup warm as it is at keeping water cool - a useful skill given the vagaries of the British weather. If you have fond memories of the Swiss Army Knife you might be interested to see its latest incarnation, the Victorinox Expedition Kit. At £135 it’s a lot of money for a knife, but then it’s a lot of knife for the money: not only does it have the usual blades and screwdrivers but it also includes a digital clock, a barometer, a compass, an altimeter and a thermometer. And of course you never know when you might need to get a stone out of a horse’s hoof. If you’d rather take even more technology with you, the Earl Backcountry Survival Tablet ($299, around £205) will start shipping in the second half of 2016 after smashing its fundraising target on Kickstarter. It’s an Android-based, ruggedised tablet with GPS, weather sensors and radio communication to ensure that you always know where you are and what’s coming, and that you’re never out of contact with the outside world. It’s a bit of an overkill for a walk round a park, but for more serious expeditions it could be a very valuable travelling companion. The use of an E-Ink screen and a built-in solar panel means it should last for ages too, although unfortunately E-Ink’s slower updating does rule out a game of Angry Birds after the day’s travelling is over. If it’s even half as good as the Kickstarter campaign promises it could be really clever. Fancy a tent that’s as techy as a tablet? The Heimplanet Cave inflates like an airbed, weighs just 5 kg and looks like it came from a spaceship. At £480 it’s a little on the expensive side, but the structure is puncture-proof and it’s actually quite affordable by inflatable tent standards.

To Dye

OR NOT TO DYE?

It’s a dilemma faced by most people of ‘a certain age’: let your hair go grey, or reach for the dye bottle? Grey hair is one of the strongest visual indicators of age and even if you’ve managed to avoid some of the other obvious signs, such as wrinkles and a sagging waistline, your hair colour will give you away every time. If you’re uneasy about the prospect of growing older, then the chances are that you will do whatever it takes to retain your youthful hair colour, even if it means regular trips to the hairdressers or struggling to make sense of an off-the-shelf dye kit:“part hair into strands and, wearing the gloves provided, tip bottle A into container B and shake well before applying”.

Why we go grey Our natural hair colour comes from a pigment known as melanin, produced by the hair follicles. As we age our follicles produce less melanin, resulting in grey and silver tones. The age at which you turn grey and the amount of hair affected depends largely upon your genes, but the average person will spot their first grey hair in their 30s and most people will have noticeable grey strands by their 40s. By the age of fifty, fifty per cent of people will have gone grey. The aging process also makes your hair follicles and the oil glands in your scalp shrink, resulting in hair that is thinner, dryer and more brittle. People of both sexes may also lose some hair as they grow older. Although we tend to think of hair loss as an exclusively male preserve, women can also lose volume as a result of hormonal changes during the menopause.

Grey is the new black Women may also feel under greater pressure to keep up a youthful appearance. While an older woman who refuses to colour her hair may be described as ‘brave’, a grey haired man enjoys the much more flattering label of ‘silver fox’. But a new fashion promises to make grey hair shades chic for both sexes, whatever their ages: young, hip celebrities such as Rihanna, Zayn Malik and Nicole Ritchie have recently hit the headlines for adopting silver grey hair shades and the trend for grey colourants is growing.

Why more of us are refusing to dye It’s ironic that while younger people are now choosing to colour their hair in grey and silver shades, many older people are turning away from hair dyes. While there is no single cause for this change of attitude, there are several reasons why the number of cheerleaders for being ‘grey and proud’ may be on the rise.

62

Is hair dye harmful? Scare stories about the dangers posed by certain chemicals have continued to surface, in spite of a major re-think by manufacturers in the 1980s, when research revealed that substances used in hair dye at that time caused cancer in mice. While modern studies have shown that prolonged exposure to hair dye chemicals may give professional hairdressers an increased chance of contracting cancer, no concrete evidence has yet been found to suggest that hair dyes are unsafe for regular personal use. The jury is still out on the risks faced by today’s consumers but even a tiny seed of doubt may be enough to persuade some people to stop colouring their hair.

We can’t turn back the clock As we age, our skin colour alters, picking up more yellow tones. This means that a mature skin tone may no longer look as good against a vibrant, youthful hair shade (although if you do decide to colour your hair a professional hairdresser will be able to advise on the best shades to use). Because aging hair is dryer and more brittle, the chemicals in permanent dyes can leave the hair looking dull and lifeless, so a desire for healthier looking hair – whatever its colour - may ultimately persuade us to let nature take its course.

Role models lead the way Back in the day it was an unspoken rule that any celebrity over 40 should automatically dye their hair. These days, however, we’re surrounded by high profile figures sporting grey hairstyles – think of male celebritiess such as Gary Lineker, José Mourinho and George Clooney and female high rollers like Vogue’s Anna Wintour, actress Meryl Streep and IMF leader Christine Lagarde. Far from hinting at age and infirmity, their grey hairstyles exude power and charisma. These days we are all living longer, in better health, and it may simply be that the trend towards accepting grey hair shows we are more relaxed about the aging process, living life to the full instead of hiding away. To quote celebrity hairstylist and founder of Twitter’s @thegreyglammovement, Cynthia Alvarez: “Grey is the new black. The colour has taken on an entirely new life and meaning – today grey is beautiful, sexy, chic, fabulous!”

Travelling Abroad

WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO SPEND YOUR MONEY?

It used to be a simple choice between traveller’s cheques or cash, but now there’s a variety of cards that offer more convenience and security when spending money abroad. In fact there are so many, it can be a bit of a minefield when trying to choose the right one. Traveller’s Cheques Good old-fashioned traveller’s cheques can be useful as a backup. Fee levels and exchange rates vary greatly according to the country you’re in, however, and also between individual banks. Pros ••Handy if you don’t want to carry large amounts of cash.

Cons

••Can be replaced within 24 hours if they’re lost or stolen.

••There’s a risk of fraud or ‘cloning’ if the card is taken out of sight when you pay.

Cons •••Exchange rates can fluctuate widely, and are generally poor when compared with other payment methods. •••You pay a fee when you buy them, and also commission when they’re exchanged.

Prepaid Cards Some of the newer prepaid cards offer very competitive exchange rates, as well as extra features such as a smartphone app. A word of warning though - there have been problems accessing money abroad using some prepaid cards, as it’s not always made clear that the first time you use the card, it has to be at a cash point.

••If you withdraw cash you’ll be charged daily interest.

Debit Cards You can use a debit card to pay for goods or withdraw cash abroad, but you’ll probably have to pay a non-sterling transaction fee. There’s no daily interest on cash withdrawals, but you might be charged a cash machine transaction fee each time you use one. Pros ••Easily blocked if the card is lost or stolen. ••Chip and pin protection.

Pros

Cons

••They’re pre-loaded, so it’s easier to budget and you can lock in a good exchange rate.

••No consumer protection as with credit cards.

••Convenient and easy to use, but check the rules carefully.

Cash

Cons ••If the card is lost or stolen you may be charged for a replacement. ••Some providers charge high fees.

••Charges can quickly add up if you withdraw cash regularly.

Although it’s not a good idea to carry lots of cash with you, you’ll need to pay for some smaller items this way, and organising it before you go will save money. Bear in mind though, that insurance policies only cover around £200 to £500 of cash on average.

Credit Cards

Pros

Still one of the most popular ways to spend money abroad, credit cards give you interest-free credit as well as valuable consumer protection. You also have the same fraud protection as in the UK, so if the card is lost or stolen you should be covered.

••You can shop around for a good exchange rate before you go.

Pros ••Some protection for goods over £100 via Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. ••They’re safe and secure, but make sure payment is taken in front of you.

66

••Can be used anywhere. Cons ••May not be fully covered by your insurance policy. ••Not as safe as carrying a plastic card. It’s a good idea to take some cash as backup for your plastic card(s) and traveller’s cheques, and buying it well before you leave means you can track down the best rates of exchange.

Design a Dog Growing up, there were two sorts of dogs - pedigrees (which no one could afford) and mongrels (a cheap and cheerful biological lucky dip). Now the classified ads offer all manner of designer crosses, and at prices that will make you cross-eyed. I’m no caninologist but it seems to me that we could be more creative with our doggy combinations. Forget your Cockapoo and your Labradoodle, let’s have some fun with this.

Here’s the science part!

A Pit Bull and an Akita: Pitta. They’re easily bred. A Pit Bull, an Akita and a Dachshund: Sausage Sandwich. Doesn’t go well with a Chow Chow. A Bloodhound and a Borzoi: a Bloody Bor. Not very socialised and an absolute menace at parties. A Polish Hound and a Finnish Spitz: Spit and Polish. Easy to maintain, and has a very shiny nose. A Saluki and a Malamute: Salute. Popular with the military. An Azawakh and a Poodle: Azapoo. May need extra toilet training.

A cross between:

A Water Spaniel and a Bedlington Terrier: Water Bed. Perfect if a good swimmer floats your boat.

A Toy Poodle and a Boxer: Toy Box. Great with small children and very playful. An Airedale and a Bedlington Terrier: Air Bed. Prices may be inflated.

A Great Dane and a Scottish Terrier: Great Scot. Can’t abide bad language and often surprises its owner. A Mexican Hairless and a Bearded Collie: Hairless Beard. Very popular with political students and young hipsters. An Otter Hound and a Manchester Terrier: Otterman. Naturally tidy and knows its place.

HOLIDAY READS

For many of us, the best thing about a holiday is the opportunity to get lost in a book, without feeling guilty about unread emails, dirty dishes or the other 1001 daily chores that rudely interrupt our reading. If you’re looking for a novel to get lost in, we have plenty to recommend.

Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet – H.P. Wood

Woman on the Edge of Time – Marge Piercy

In 1904, the tavern beneath Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet has become a haven for the many ‘unusuals’ who call Coney Island their home. There’s Rosalind, who’s as likely to wear a suit as a dress, Zeph, who lost both his legs in a childhood accident, eight year old P-Ray, who never speaks and collects fleas, and any other number of characters. After finding herself alone and penniless, Kitty Hayward finds solace at Magruder’s, but her peace may well be short-lived. Anarchy is in the air, and the plague is sweeping through the streets. These characters will stay with you long after your holiday is over.

It’s been four decades since the release of this classic feminist dystopian novel, yet the writing still feels just as original and relevant. Wife and mother Connie Ramos has been branded as mentally unstable and now lives alone, ostracised by most of society. She starts escaping to a future, happier time – where equality is accepted as the norm. But Connie is also shown an alternative future, where women are little more than commodities. Which one becomes reality may be down to Connie herself. If you’ve never read it, or worse, were made to analyse it for an English Literature class, now is the time to pick up the 40th anniversary edition.

The Last of Us – Rob Ewing

Fishbowl – Bradley Somer

On a remote Scottish island, a pandemic has killed most of the population. There are no adults left. Just five children, trying to survive on the tinned food they find in neighbouring houses. There’s Rona, the narrator, along with little Alex and their leader, Elizabeth, who makes sure they brush their teeth and carry on with their school lessons. And then there’s Calum Ian and Duncan, who are starting to resent Elizabeth’s authority. A beautiful, heart-wrenching story.

All of life’s highs and lows are played out in one apartment block by its many inhabitants. There’s ‘the Villain Connor Radley’, ‘the Evil Seductress Faye’, ‘Stoic Jimenez’ and agoraphobic ‘Clare the Shut-in’, amongst others. And then there’s Ian – a humble goldfish, who’s about to take a plunge from the twenty-seventh floor. In the four seconds it takes him to fall, he’ll discover more about the apartment’s inhabitants than perhaps they even know about themselves. Insightful, original and entertaining.

Dear Amy – Helen Callaghan When a newspaper agony aunt receives a letter claiming to be from a kidnapped girl, she assumes at first it’s a hoax. After all, Bethany Avery has been missing for years. But then more letters arrive, seemingly with information only the girl could know. Throw into the mix another recent abduction, and you have an enjoyable psychological thriller with plenty of twists and turns, a great storyline and appealing characters.

70

Hitman Anders and the Meaning of It All – Jonas Jonasson After three stints in prison for murder, Hitman Anders decides to go straight. Well, less crooked anyway. An unlikely alliance between the hitman, a lapsed priest and a hotel receptionist see the trio embark on a trek across Sweden, lying, cheating and swindling as they go. A great novel to escape into for fans of dark humour, it’s possibly best suited to villa holidays, or other locations where holidaymakers won’t get annoyed at your snorts of laughter.

Commercial Successes

The drive to make Telford & Wrekin a more commercial council securing new and growing existing sources of income is already paying off, last year generating an extra £600,000 for the Council. Despite this success, it is warning that deep cuts will continue. The Council has already begun making the £30 million of cuts it must find by 2018 but is now warning that there will be more to come as the grant from Government to councils continues to reduce as demand for many services is increasing. A report to the Council’s cabinet shows that last year, thanks to its continued strong financial management, the Council underspent its £124 million net budget by 0.1 per cent or just over £100,000. Reasons for this positive position include the £600,000 of new commercial income, £1 million saved by not filling vacant posts and over £7 million from cost effective treasury management initiatives. The strong financial performance has also allowed the Council to set aside a number of one-off sums including £2.1 million to cushion the impact of cuts in 2017/18, a £1.5 million fund for environmental improvements and £1.2 million for household waste and recycling contract costs.

HELP LESSEN CUTS BUT FINANCIAL OUTLOOK BLEAK particular for the cost of purchased care packages and the cost of children in care. Councillor Lee Carter, cabinet member for finance, said: “The Council has done very well to control its budget despite having to make £10 million of further cuts last year on top of the £70 million made in the previous six years and to put itself in a position where it is well placed for the very difficult financial challenges still to come. “This is largely thanks to the Council’s strong financial management and the success of our drive to become a more commercial council, which is already making a very important contribution. “But make no mistake, the financial outlook remains very bleak. In the last six years, we have cut £80 million from our budget. We already have to cut another £30 million by 2018 and know that we’ll need to find significantly more on top of this by 2020. “This will be a very difficult and painful task. Our positive approach of developing new commercial initiatives and forging new partnerships to find different ways of running services will help to limit this . “I continue to want to talk with as many groups and people as possible about the challenges and potential options faced by the Council so that our decisions continue to be informed by our residents.”

‘Nature Deficit Disorder’?

BECOME A WILDLIFE RECORDER!

According to Dr John Blewitt, a specialist in Social Responsibility at Aston University in Birmingham, many of us are suffering from a new condition known as “nature deficit disorder”. Before you rush to google the symptoms, it may help to know that this isn’t a real medical condition, but a term coined to describe people who are cut off from the natural world. Research carried out by the charity Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF) has revealed that a significant percentage of young adults aged between 16 and 23 are so divorced from nature they believe that eggs are made from wheat and don’t know that milk comes from a cow. In a timely intervention, Bristol Natural History Consortium, together with 14 partner organisations, has come up with a national initiative that promises to put us back in touch with the natural world. BioBlitz is a research programme that encourages ordinary people to become wildlife explorers for a day. Events are scheduled to take place throughout the country until October.

researchers identify the presence of animals by identifying their paw-prints. The idea is very simple: your garden visitors enter a small, triangular tunnel set with bait, leaving their prints on special inked paper as they search for the food. This is an intriguing survey that can involve the whole family – with the added satisfaction that you are contributing to national research on small mammal populations.

BioBlitz’s team of experienced naturalists and wildlife watchers are hoping to link up with an army of volunteers to help them track down as many different species of insects, plants, wild birds and mammals as they can within a 24 hour timeframe. The research will be carried out in exactly the same way as a formal scientific expedition: everything that is discovered will be carefully documented then passed on to local and national databases that monitor the UK’s wildlife. BioBlitz promises there will be something for all ages at their events, with interactive activities suitable for beginners and experts alike (find out more at www.bnhc.org.uk).

A Footprint Tunnel kit is available from The Mammal Society at www.mammal.org.uk at a cost of £15.54 (including VAT). You can download a free, printable guide from the same site to help you identify different species from their paw-prints.

If 24 hours isn’t long enough to satisfy your curiosity about the natural world, never fear: you can go on to take part in a wide range of wildlife initiatives that keep going all year round.

Love our Ladybirds

Go to www.ladybird-survey.org to find information about this much-loved insect, which belongs to the scientific family Coccinellidae. These attractive creatures come in a range of different colours and sizes, from the tiny, yellow 22-spot Ladybird to the pea-sized Eyed Ladybird. In the UK, around 46 species actually belong to this family, although only 26 of these are recognisable as ladybirds. Ladybird research is important because of the recent invasion by the Harlequin Ladybird, which now threatens to overwhelm our native populations. On the Ladybird Survey website you’ll find links to a website where you can record sightings of the Harlequin.

Buy a mammal tunnel

Even wondered which small mammals pass through your garden at night, searching for food? Nottingham Trent University has come up with an ingenious way to detect the presence of hedgehogs, mice, shrews and other small creatures that would otherwise be hard to observe with the naked eye. The Footprint Tunnel is a non-invasive tool designed to help

Add value to your birdwatching hobby

BirdTrack is a partnership between the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), the RSPB, Birdwatch Ireland, the Scottish Ornithologists’ Club and the Welsh Ornithological Society. It is a national research programme that uses people power to supply information on birds where there are currently gaps in our knowledge (for example, very little is known about the timing of arrivals and departures of migrating species). The information you supply to BirdTrack could eventually be used to protect our birds, particularly rare species. It is easy to take part in a BirdTrack survey. Just register on the site www.bto.org as a recorder and the next time you go birdwatching, enter the location you’ve visited plus the date and time of your visit, then check off the birds you spotted on the list provided. Information is updated every night, so you can go online the following day to see how the information uploaded by you and other birdwatchers across the UK is contributing to ongoing research. If you and your family have never previously thought about how you could protect and conserve our natural environment, then these ideas will hopefully inspire you to take on a more active role. There are many other ways for you to get involved with monitoring wildlife, including a butterfly survey, a national reptile and amphibian recording scheme, a flying ant survey and a shark egg case hunt! These innovative wildlife recording projects are not only a fantastic way to learn about the great outdoors, they also make a real contribution to the nation’s knowledge, so get out there and start recording today.

Smarty Pants

The Smart ForTwo is a clever little car: a groundbreaking design for an overpopulated planet. If it could talk it would regale you with witty motoring anecdotes, explain the intricacies of the internal combustion engine and do it all while driving you to the shops. Look in its glovebox and you’ll see a Mensa membership card. But no-one really likes a smart rear-end or do they? As of this year, old clever clogs can arrive on your driveway as a roofless cabrio, but today I’m concentrating on its hard-top sibling, because it’ll take a lot more than flashy gimmicks to unstick my own fascination with the Smart car, which began soon after it launched in the late 1990s. This 1 litre Passion test car certainly still cuts a dash in its natural habitat around the towns and cities of the West Midlands - not quite the neon-glow of Tokyo but just the terrain needed to see if it can outsmart its many rivals, most notably the Renault Twingo, which, thanks to Smart’s joint-venture development programme with – ahem – Renault, shares the ForTwo’s underpinnings. The Smart’s short wheelbase (the whole car still retains a tiny 269cm length) means that it turns into corners responsively and rewardingly, yet the ride is smooth and comfortable, which could never be said of the previous generation - it had road manners akin to a substandard soapbox race entry. This gutsy three-cylinder engine develops 71bhp and makes keeping pace with traffic in town easy. And there’s every reason to greet passing cyclists without shame or green-faced embarrassment, because - as a corollary of its urban-orientated design – it coughs out less than 100g/km of the nasty stuff. It fits right in with slick city fashion too: trendy shoppers nod

80

BY ROB TAYLOR

approvingly, while sipping lattes outside ultra-cool coffee shops, and the Smart’s super-cool 15” alloy wheels allow you to bask in your own shop-window-reflected glory, knowing that this vehicle costs just a smidgen under £12,000. But much of this will come as no particular surprise, nor will fans of Mercedes (Smart’s owner) be shocked to learn that it is well-built, blessed with finely upholstered seats and made with top quality interior plastics – or that it can be specc’d to be as sombre or colourful as you wish. Equally unsurprising is the fact that every bit of tech, whether infotainment – the £795 Premium Package which gets you built-in sat-nav, is a must – or safety is top-notch. However what is truly staggering is that in a car small enough to park in your pocket, this six foot tall writer could comfortably be accommodated inside for a lengthy cross-country three hour run, involving motorways – the old Smart car’s nemesis – and myriad A and B-roads, and not come out the other side beset by tinnitus, wracked with back ache. Admittedly the engine can feel strained when under load, but you never feel too under-powered or intimidated on motorways, unless of course you happen to come up against a large automotive colossus when there’s a particularly strong cross-wind. A 0-60mph time of 14.4 seconds won’t win any drag races, however a top speed of 94 mph is all you’ll ever legally need. The Smart ForTwo is still an impressive amount of innovation for a not particularly impressive starting price of £11,070. The 5-speed manual gearbox (you can pay more for an auto) is precise and the gearing is well spaced and, when employed sensibly, it will return up to – officially - 69mpg on the combined cycle. With some fun and frolics I managed around 45mpg. So without having a retro gimmick like the Fiat 500, the cheap practicality of the Renault Twingo, the little Smart ForTwo is a big success in its own right.

The Course of Progress

Rarely do us Brits ever appreciate that things are broadly getting better when it comes to cars – or anything else for that matter. We are more likely to be heard to moan, as our forefathers have done for millennia, that ‘things aren’t as good as they used to be.’ Think about it: there have been people of every generation who have bemoaned progress of every kind; reviling it at every possible opportunity; all of them eager to banish as much as they can conceivably fit into their very own Room 101. Luddites smashed up heavy machinery; today’s Neo-Luddites want to smash up the Internet. When it comes to cars, the unswerving drive from our government to minimise emissions has given us irritating start-stop systems and electric power steering. Most of us would pluck these overly complex gizmos out of our cars in a heartbeat, but one good thing to come out of all this cosying up to our EU overlords is the downsizing of engines – specifically the sensational rise of turbocharged three cylinder units, like the one in the latest Vauxhall Corsa. This has proven to be a real game-changer in the super-mini class especially, because it eschews the big but not too clever idea of making small cars scaled down carbon copies of larger models in the range, rather than playing to their strengths. Big deal, you might say; I’m old, suffer from deep vein thrombosis and gave up on what’s under the bonnet at the age of 30. Well you – and most other people – won’t care too much about the differences these changes make until you get behind the wheel. And the baby engine in this fourth generation Corsa is a prime example. Opt for Vauxhall’s new three-cylinder turbo 1.0T EcoFlex unit and you won’t be disappointed. “What?!” I hear you cry, “A mere 998cc to lug around a car that weighs 1645 kg, you must be mad.”

BY ROB TAYLOR

Well, it produces 90 bhp and 123 lb ft of torque and so you will rarely be caught wanting for more. OK, so, it’s no hot hatch – that’s the VXR – but this engine is lively enough; it will do 0-60 mph in 11.9 seconds; is pretty tractable from low revs and is able to cruise quietly, thanks to a balancer shaft designed to remove the signature three cylinder thrum. This car really does ride and handle as well as it looks: that is to say very nicely indeed. I can’t remember any previousgen Corsa looking this good. Motorways are no problem either as once up and running you can cruise without any concern that the car is underpowered. Get it out on a twisty open road and you’ll soon discover that the gearbox is a pleasant and willing companion, always egging you to shift sharper and more precisely, while maximising every one of the 90 available horses. Put it into city confines and you’ll enjoy the ‘City’ steering button that takes every effort away. This Corsa provides an impressive official combined fuel economy number of 64.2 mpg too, although when you inevitably drive it as I did (as in: always keen to exploit the zesty engine’s fun-loving character), don’t expect to see such heady headline-grabbing figures. I averaged around 45.6 mpg. Emissions are more finite however and are listed at 104 g/km Co2. The Corsa’s interior space grabs your attention. Happily, the SRI model I have here is chock-full of all the best bits the range has to offer and is the sybaritic car of choice, with 16” black alloys, air conditioning, sports seats, a leather covered steering wheel, LED running lights, cruise control, and Bluetooth connectivity. And you get it all for £14,150, although I’d recommend lowerspec’d models, as the range starts at just £8,995. Buy one with this engine and I guarantee you won’t regret it. It’ll make you feel like a 17 year old again, in the best ways imaginable.

All MINIs have a distinctive and instantly recognisable look to them, and with the Countryman range, it carries this identifiable image into a stockier frame to give you more space and practicality. The stylish bodywork helps to make the Countryman a tantalising option in the CUV sector and with great additions and features to match, it’s difficult to see why you wouldn’t choose it. However, it has competition from Skoda’s Yeti, a CUV similar in size and price and both cars have their good elements. For starters, both models have had recent redesigns to create more space and alter their looks to be more modern and upto-date. It has to be said that the Countryman certainly looks better than the Yeti, with the distinguishing features of the MINI range, such as the shape, the headlights and front grille, to make it truly stand out on the road. The size of both models also make them very practical, with the smaller Countryman offering 350 litres of space in the boot

MINI COUNTRYMAN VS SKODA YETI

with the seats up, whilst the Yeti has only 66 litres more in a car 20cm longer and 10cm taller. This means you can get more for your money space-wise in the Countryman, especially as the range starts off cheaper than the Skoda. Customisability has also been a recent appeal of the MINI market, and with the Countryman this is no exception. With MINI’s design additions that can be fitted to the whole range, you can personalise your Countryman as much as you wish. Also you can fit satellite navigation, stereo system, leather trim and ‘Run-Flat’ tyres to your model; great options that can be added to any of the range. Good options aren’t as easy to come by on the Yeti, as the better choices to fit are only available further up the Yeti model range, whilst almost all are compatible with every Countryman model. To compete with the Yeti’s off-road capabilities in the Yeti Outdoor and more expensive models, MINI offers the ‘All-4’ allwheel drive system throughout the class. With a higher ride height and great grip on offer, the Countryman All-4 system will give you confidence both on and off road, with only a small premium on top of the two-wheel drive versions. The Yeti’s base model is fitted with a 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine producing 110hp, whilst the 1.6-litre in the One produces just 98hp. This doesn’t compromise much in speed with only a marginal difference in acceleration. Overall, with a wider variety of vehicle and equipment options, value for money and great 4x4 system, the MINI Countryman is the better option of the two, and with the great looking bodywork to encase you, why wouldn’t you want to drive it? The MINI Countryman is available from £17,105 for the One Countryman, with the top of the range 218hp John Cooper Works All-4 starting at £28,985. For more information on the Countryman or any other models in the MINI range, contact your nearest Inchcape MINI dealership.

I Take It

YOU ARE NOT A FAN THEN?

Ben Collins: Of course you know him. He’s was once in the white racing suit on Top Gear and latterly a stunt driver in James Bond films; he knows a thing or two about driving.

a capable human ready to take over if things go wrong (of which, in one well publicised coming together, the bus won).

So it came as no surprise when I learnt the former Stig is none-too-enamoured with the prospect of driverless cars on our roads. He laments that already the likes of lane-departure warning and collision avoidance systems are removing control from the driver and reducing them to “supervising passengers”.

If, and when, driverless cars are given the go ahead onto our roads (predications range from 10 years to never) they will be competing for road space with millions of existing “conventional” cars, all being driven by us drivers who will offer no special exemptions to the new kid on the block.

“The less of that the better” he says. “This stuff just makes people more prone to get their phones out and start texting.”

Ben raises a very significant point too: car electronics can go wrong. What happens when the sensors fail or get blocked by road dirt?

I’m with Ben in wanting to keep humans in control, because those driverless cars will be, in effect, learner drivers with no L plates. By Iain Betson

A good point. To date the majority of driverless cars have been tested at reasonably slow speed, on test tracks or with

Travel

New Delhi takes you by surprise, an almost European city with all the exotic colours of India but a world away from the hustle and bustle of Old Delhi and much of the country. As a final gift from the British Empire, it’s a pleasant city of tree lined avenues and stunning vistas with elegant buildings, vast open spaces and a fair share of museums and historic sites. In December 1911, the British had announced that India’s capital, then in Calcutta, would return to Delhi, a more central location where a new city would be built, worthy of the Raj. King George V laid the foundation stone but controversy raged for almost two years, plagued by bad omens and a difficult choice of site. Work was finally handed over to top English architect Edwin Lutyens, renowned for his extravagance. Lutyens was seconded by Herbert Baker and though the two men often disagreed, they designed a grand capital in ‘imperial style’, spacious, symmetrical, with a few elements of Indian architecture to pay tribute to local tradition. It took 20 years to complete. In a prime location on Raisana Hill, the President’s Residence, formerly the Viceroy’s House, rises above the city in near grandiose isolation. Built with 700 million bricks, it claims vast interior courtyards and over 350 rooms, is larger than Versailles, and has a subtle mix of East and West. There are stone elephants and classical columns, Indian bells, a copper dome and a Jaipur column carved with oak leaves and topped with a lotus. Other government venues include Baker’s secretarial buildings and

86

NEW DELHI

the circular Parliament House, 173 metres around, enclosed by colonnaded verandas. There, independence was hailed by a bugler in 1947 and the new constitution was drafted. From Raisina Hill, the ceremonial Rajpath, or King’s Way, leads through Lutyens’ great plaza to the massive sandstone arch of India gate. Rising 42 metres above the ground, India’s national monument commemorates those who died in the British Indian army and guards the eternal flame. The Rajpath is at the heart of celebrations on Republic Day but with its water features, trees and lawns, it’s always a favourite haunt of tourists and locals. The canopy which sheltered a statue of George V is now empty, but chipmunks run across the grass, children splash in the boating lake and stalls sell candyfloss, coconuts and ice cream. It’s a great place to stroll in the cool of the evening when India Gate stands all lit up against the darkening sky. Not so far away, the great sweep of Connaught Place showcases a fine Georgian style reminiscent of the Royal Crescent in Bath. Designed by Robert Tor Russell, a lesser known yet prolific architect, it’s the capital’s top commercial hub with three concentric circles of shops opening on colonnaded arcades and roads radiating in every direction, busiest of all the famous Janpath. The area has shopping venues for everyone, from pavement stalls to luxury outlets. There are cotton shirts and pashmina shawls, raw silk and cashmere, carpets, antiques, costume jewellery and tribal craft. The central park hosts cultural events while all around, food stalls and restaurants serve a wide variety of cuisines from India and beyond. After a challenging tour of the ‘real India’, it’s the perfect place to bargain for those last minute souvenirs before heading home.

Comedy and Music Come along to Oakengates Theatre @ The Place this October to experience a completely unique evening of comedy and music with The Unique Komedy Ukulele Orchestra. Is it possible for anyone to create a show that brilliantly combines music from Mozart to Monty Python, Bach to the Beatles, Chick Corea to Rossini? The answer in the case of The Unique Komedy Ukulele Orchestra is a resounding “YES!”, especially as their motto is “musical borders belong to yesterday”. After three hugely successful European tours in 2011, 2012 and 2013 they are coming back.

BRILLIANTLY COMBINED

If the mix of comedy and an orchestra of ukuleles sounds intriguing then get those tickets booked and find out what many people already know; that the combination works and the music and comedy makes for a very entertaining and enjoyable show. Tickets to this amzing show at 7.30pm on Wednesday 5 October cost £20 each (£20 concessions and £19 TLC) and can be booked online at www.theplacetelford.com by calling the box office on 01952 382382, or in person at the theatre or Southwater One in Telford Town Centre. A pre show meal is also available at the theatre prior to the show. Enjoy two lovely courses at 6pm for just £9.75 per person.

Hawaiian garlands dangle from the microphone stands. Behind them is and eight-piece orchestra. The men are wearing suits with bow ties and the women are wearing black evening dresses. Each has a ukulele on their lap. The unusual Ukulele Orchestra wows the public with its quirky show. In the repertoire are contrasting pieces from classical to rock, from oldies to current hits and even from long-forgotten treasures to those pieces one prefers to forget. All put together with very British homour and some surprising interjections.

LEAFLET DISTRIBUTION

Notes from your local Muxton Councillor Many residents will be disappointed to learn that the planning inspectors refusal of the Gladman development on Muxton Lane has been overturned. This means that a new planning inquiry will now take place sometime in the near future. The situation has arisen as a direct consequence of the Haygate Fields enquiry where the inspector questioned the validity of Telford and Wrekins ‘planning policies. There is now a very real risk that the local planning authority will be unable to prevent any developments across the Borough!

Keep Calm

AND GET COLOURING

Close your eyes and think back to the simple pleasures of childhood: a rainbow box of crayons on the table and, beside it, a book of illustrations just waiting to be coloured in. Remember the intense concentration as you filled in the blank spaces with your favourite shades of yellow, red, purple, green and blue? The sense of achievement when you offered up your masterpiece for some parental praise? Now fast-forward to the present day, when high-tech gadgets and gizmos allow us to create sophisticated and brightly coloured designs with just a few mouse clicks and high quality, full colour prints of those designs can be produced within seconds. Such innovations should have consigned the humble crayon to the dustbin of history, so it’s amazing to learn that in the second decade of the 21st century one of the most popular hobbies amongst adults is colouring in line drawings by hand. Adult colouring has become a global phenomenon, spreading to countries as diverse as Brazil and New Zealand. In fact the interest is so great that the world’s largest wooden pencil manufacturer, Faber-Castell, has been forced to increase shifts at its German factory in order to keep up with demand. Sandra Suppa, a spokeswoman for Faber-Castell, is in no doubt that our dependence on technology is one of the main reasons for the craze: “It allows you to catch a break from the fastmoving digital world and to give your eyes a rest from flickering computer screens.” Adult ‘colourists’ love intricate, challenging designs that allow for subtle colour variations and due to this trend Sandra Suppa reports that customers are no longer satisfied with a standard box of 36 colours: “We are noticing a trend in people preferring bigger sets of 72 or even 120 colours”. Printers and booksellers have also seen a stratospheric rise in the popularity of colouring books created for the adult market. Millie Marotta’s Animal Kingdom - where outlines of fish, birds and elephants are fleshed out with ornate patterns - is high on the bestseller list. So is Johanna Basford’s Secret Garden, with its beautifully detailed pen and ink drawings of an imaginary garden. It is ‘secret’ because there are tiny creatures hidden within the artwork, ready to be discovered as colourists get to work. Since its publication in 2013, The Secret Garden has been translated into 14 different languages, selling more than a million copies. Emma Farrarons’ The Mindfulness Colouring Book is another popular title. Mindfulness, with its emphasis on being aware of the present moment, fits particularly well with this hobby because colouring is essentially a repetitive, undemanding activity that can be used to focus the mind. Farrarons’ book has been printed in pocket size so it can be used in any setting where mindfulness is practised.

There has been considerable debate as to whether adult colouring can be classed as ‘art therapy’, as therapists argue that the process is not essentially creative. However, colourists claim that their hobby can lead to a calmer, almost meditative frame of mind and this view is supported by clinical psychologist Dr David Holmes: “With our workaholic culture, we spend most of our lives in ‘beta mode’, which is when we’re alert, problemsolving, decision-making. By actively altering the preponderance of certain brain patterns, you can shift into ‘alpha mode’, which is more like the state of mind we have as children. Meditation and similar techniques require learning and practice, whereas anyone can just drop into colouring-in.” Frenchwoman Cynthia Riviére, who administrates a Facebook group of more than 1,000 colouring book fans, has also discovered that her hobby has direct health benefits: “I realised that colouring makes my headaches go away. I concentrate, my breathing slows down and I move into a deep calm.” No wonder colouring has so many converts, including celebrities such as TV chef Nigella Lawson, actor Zooey Deschanel and TV presenter Kirstie Allsopp. Colouring may seem like a solitary pastime but it can also become a social activity: in recent years colouring clubs and parties have proved popular, particularly in America and France. The Ladies Coloring Club is a Facebook Group based in the US which links to groups around the world. Alternatively you could start your own group like 38-year-old Suzanne Parsonage from Bristol, who launched a colourists group from her local pub. Many local libraries also host adult colouring sessions. If you are eager to try colouring for yourself but don’t want to invest in a book of illustrations just yet, go online and download some free printable pages. You’ll find some great library printables at www.pinterest.com that will help you decide whether adult colouring is for you. If you are feeling that this hobby is a little too childish, you’ll be relieved to hear that a recent article in Director magazine identified a growing trend amongst business leaders who have taken up colouring in order to alleviate stress. So grab a box of crayons or felt-tips and make a start. It seems there’s every reason to add a little colour to your everyday life and all you need to worry about is keeping within the lines!

Take some... Traditional values and service Established in 2003, The Kitchen Depot is a family-owned and run business that remains true to our founding values of honesty, integrity and sheer professionalism. We take immense pride in our reputation for service and commitment to our customers, with more than half of our business coming from customer recommendations to their family and friends.

...add a dash of… Quality and Value

All of our kitchens are manufactured to an exceptionally high German specification, on site, in our own factory and by our own people. That way, we have total control over the product quality, the production timescales AND the manufacturing costs. With no middle-man – you buy direct and we are able to pass these time and cost savings directly onto our customers.

…then a big chunk of…

Ownership and Responsibility

Unusual in this insincere world, admittedly. But we mean it. We are totally committed to providing you with the best kitchen, at the best price, installed with the highest level of service and professionalism. And on the exceptionally rare occasion that something could have been done better – we hold our hands up – and put it right. Fast. No fuss. No hassle. No argument. Just sorted.

...a soupçon of…Harmony At The Kitchen Depot, we know that we are only as good as our people. They ARE The Kitchen Depot brand. That’s why we look after our staff every bit as well as we look after our customers. Because we know that happy workers, pulling together in harmony, make for happy customers.
