Should I use more than one estate agent to sell my house? Brought to you by James Carlon James Carlon Co Author of ‘THE TELFORD PROPERTY BLOG’
So you’ve had your house on the market for a while and the viewings have dried up - what do you do? If you want a quick sale (and let’s face it, most of us do) the chances are you’ll be tempted to approach another agent to see if they can help move things along. After all, two heads are better than one, right?
Thirdly, there is simple human nature at play here - an agent may be tempted to persuade you to take a lower offer to sell the house with them, or they may assume you’ll sell with the rival agent and take their foot off the gas.
“You might think these things don’t happen, but they do!”
Well… in this case, perhaps not! I was talking to a potential client recently who failed to sell their house a number of years ago despite having had it on the market with two agents. How could they both have failed, he wondered?
My advice would be to thoroughly research your preferred estate agents, both online and offline, before choosing who to go with. Then you can be sure of choosing the best agent for your house and you won’t need to look around for anyone else.
There are a number of reasons why having your property marketed by two agents is not always a good idea. Firstly, it can make you look a bit, well, desperate. Why do they need two agents to sell this house, potential buyers might wonder, what’s wrong with it?
James Carlon Residential Sales Manager Nock Deighton
Secondly, it can turn out to be more expensive because you are effectively paying two people to do one person’s job.

Has the general election affected the Telford housing market? Brought to you by Dawn Clarke Dawn Clarke Co Author of ‘THE TELFORD PROPERTY BLOG’
Politics has dominated the news headlines in recent weeks, with the fall-out of the general election giving pundits plenty to chew over.
Conversely, it’s also a good time to consider investing in property because the level of demand from tenants is very high due to the lack of available property to let.
“But what does it all mean for Telford’s housing market?”
This rise in demand and dip in supply is pushing rents up - average rents in the West Midlands increased by just over 2% in the first quarter of 2017 compared to the same period last year, and this rise is likely to accelerate throughout the rest of the year.
To be honest, regardless of your political colour, the result of the general election hasn’t actually changed much, so it’s very much a case of business as usual here in Telford & Wrekin. Buyers have remained confident over the past year, despite the EU referendum, and we don’t expect the general election result to change that. We have remained busy right up to the election so I am confident the local property market will continue to perform strongly. The main issue is still a lack of stock on the market and there are limited options for buyers and people looking for rental property. That means it’s an ideal time to seek advice and take your property to the market to achieve the highest price possible. 8
The lettings market in the Telford & Wrekin area is always strong because it’s such a popular place to live, with good employment opportunities and a growing population. For more information about property management and investment opportunities in Telford, please call or drop me an email.

Restaurant Review
FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE
The Apothecary 35 Greengate Street, Stafford ST16 2HZ
T: 01785 231450
The Apothecary is a relatively new venue in the centre of Stafford which opened in December last year. A full refurbishment was undertaken transforming the former Post House into a very modern restaurant and cocktail bar. The Apothecary is a very large building which includes many different dining areas, a main bar area, a cocktail bar and even a nightclub. There are private rooms which are perfect for hosting your own private parties to celebrate those special occasions, including weddings. The interior of the building is extremely impressive and will wow you as soon as you walk through the door. There is a stunning staircase that leads up to the cocktail bar area with huge chandeliers and lots of comfy seating areas. We were shown through to our table and given a menu and wine list. We ordered a bottle of Sauvignon which arrived while we were still deciding on our food choices. For starters I chose the Panko Breaded Brie Bites with cranberry jam and Nik selected the Pan Fried King Scallops with wilted spinach and bacon lardons, garlic and white wine cream sauce, topped with Parmesan cheese. My Brie bites had a nice crunch on the outside with lovely soft melted Brie in the middle and the cranberry jam was delicious. Nik said his scallops were perfectly cooked and thoroughly enjoyed his starter. There was a great range of mains to choose from and Nik eventually decided on the Oven Baked Gnocchi in a rich tomato and oregano ragu, Parmesan crust and garlic flatbread fingers; I decided on the Beer Battered Cod with fat chips, mushy peas and proper tartar sauce.
14
FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT Nik is quite a fan of Gnocchi and was very pleased with his dish he managed to mop up every last bit with his flatbread fingers. We just about had room to squeeze in a dessert and I ordered the The Jam Jar Sundae and Nik went for the Warm Chocolate Brownie with chocolate sauce, popping candy and vanilla pod ice cream.
Thursday and all day Sunday for just £12.50 and includes a choice of any flat bread from the menu, a portion of salt and pepper chips and a jam jar sundae. Also available are a choice Afternoon Tea's, with Traditional, Fizzy or Cocktail Afternoon Tea and prices start from £14.50pp, please enquire or see website for full details. A resident DJ plays every Friday and Saturday from 9pm in the Lounge Bar, playing popular and chart music every week. The Apothecary has so much to offer there is something for everyone to try, but do call and book if you are dining in the restaurant.
The Jam Jar Sundaes come in a choice of Chocolate, Strawberry or toffee, I had chosen the chocolate and it did taste as good as looks! Nik's chocolate brownie was soon devoured, he said it was a great finish to his meal. We thought it would be rude not to go upstairs after our meal and sample a cocktail or two and with 2-4-1 offers it was great value too. Please note that the cocktail bar is only open on Fridays and Saturdays from 6pm. Food is served all day from midday until 9:30pm everyday. Special fixed price lunch is available until 5pm (Monday to Friday) with 2 courses for £11.95 or 3 courses for £14.95. The 'Flat-Jam' is available from 5pm till 9:30pm Monday to

WHITE CHOCOLATE FILO TARTS Crisp and light pastry cases filled with a rich and creamy white chocolate mousse – these tarts are easy to make but look impressive. Double up the quantities if serving a crowd.
Ready in 45 minutes, plus cooling and chilling Makes 6 INGREDIENTS: • 25g unsalted butter, melted • 6-8 sheets filo pastry • 100g good quality white chocolate • 2 tbsp milk • 150ml double cream • Dark chocolate curls and cocoa, to decorate
1. Preheat the oven to 190C, 170C fan, Gas Mark 5. Use a little of the melted butter to grease 6 holes of a 12-hole bun tray. 2. Use a sharp knife to cut the pastry into 18cm x 10cm squares. Brush each square lightly with some of the remaining melted butter. 3. Line each buttered hole with three of the squares, arranging each one at an angle so the corners form a star. Press gently into the holes. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden brown. Leave to cool in the tray. 5. To make the white chocolate filling, break the chocolate into pieces and place in a heatproof bowl with the milk. Set the bowl over a pan of simmering water. Leave until the chocolate has melted then remove from the heat and stir until smooth. Cool for 10 minutes. 6. Pour the cream into a bowl and whip the cream until softly peaking. Gently fold in the cooled chocolate mixture and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 7. Gently spoon the chocolate cream between the filo pastry cases. Decorate with the dark chocolate curls and a dusting of cocoa powder. Serve within 1 hour of filling.
TIP You can make the pastry cases a few hours in advance but only fill just before serving otherwise the pastry will go soggy.

Richard's brother Tom Eley was responsible for making the two pies sent in to judges for final taste tests. “I just made them exactly as I make all of our pies as it was important to us that the judges tasted what we make day in day out,” said Tom.
Richard Eley said the family was absolutely delighted with the accolade: “It’s Jamie Oliver for heaven’s sake!”
World famous Eley’s of Ironbridge have been making their handraised pork pies to a secret family recipe for 50 years. The pastry is balled by hand then the pie is raised around a traditional dolly.
The taste test results are revealed in the June issue of Jamie’s Magazine in a feature asking ‘what makes the perfect Ploughman’s?’ After scouring the country, they rate the top 3 cheddars, pickles and pork pies.
Councillor Nicola Lowrey, borough councillor for the Ironbridge Gorge on Telford & Wrekin Council, said she was thrilled with the news.
The pies were judged on their appearance, their texture and their flavour. Pork pie baron Richard added: “Many, many outlets were invited to take part in the initial taste test and we thought ‘let’s do it’ – we believe our pies are fantastic. “When we heard we had made the Top 10 shortlist nationally we thought wow, what a fab result. To not only make the Top 3 but be judged to be the best is amazing. “We are totally honoured and delighted that our hard work over the years and traditional family recipe has been recognised.”

She said: “This is fantastic news not just for Eley’s, but for the vibrant business community in our internationally renowned World Heritage Site of Ironbridge. “It is wonderful to see a thriving, locally grown business continue to build on its rich history. Winning such a prestigious and well-recognised award on a national platform is positive for all of us, and we should all be very proud. “Not only can we celebrate the world’s first iron bridge and our heritage as the birthplace of the industrial revolution, but we can now tell everyone that we have the country’s best tasting pork pie.”

Building a Future
FOR FAMILY MEMORIES
Top of their list is the oddly-named Gimp, which works like a basic version of the industry-standard software Photoshop. Gimp allows you to do everything from cropping and resizing to altering exposure and colour balance. It also has the same invaluable ‘clone tool’ as Photoshop, which allows you to heal the spoiled parts of a photo by copying an undamaged area over the damaged spot.
Converting your slides During the 1960s and 70s a craze for slide photography meant that many amateur snappers temporarily stopped taking conventional photos. If you have boxes of slides that you need to convert to digital files, you will need an additional piece of equipment. Slide scanners start at around £16 (for a device that can be used together with a smartphone), while standalone scanners can cost up to £125.
I recently inherited several boxes of family photographs, with images dating from Victorian times - when photography was in its infancy right up to the first decade of the new millennium. Some pictures were stored carefully in albums but others were roughly crammed into folders and envelopes. Unsurprisingly, some of the older items were beginning to show signs of deterioration, including rips, stains and tiny spots of mould. While I felt very privileged to be the keeper of this important archive, it was a reminder that my own family snaps and VHS tapes were packed in the loft: all in danger of going the same way as my newly-acquired collection. After taking stock of all this precious material - which documented over 100 years of my family’s history - it occurred to me that I had a responsibility to preserve it for future generations.
Preserving family photographs When it comes to the future of a family photo collection you are faced with a straightforward choice: either divide the photographs up between a select group of relatives, or digitise the entire archive so it can be enjoyed by everyone. While the first option is quick and simple, it’s not entirely satisfactory. Unless the collection includes duplicate images, no-one will hold a complete set of family photos. There is also a chance that in future someone will throw out their part of the collection because they no longer have space to keep it. Converting hard copy photos to digital images may involve a lot of work, but it ensures that the archive will be passed on from generation to generation. Restoring and digitising photographic images can also become an enjoyable hobby: there’s great satisfaction in transforming faded, mould-spotted and torn pictures into images that look as fresh as the day they emerged from the darkroom. If you decide to digitise, you will need a computer with enough disk space to store the photographic files you are creating. You’ll also need some kind of photo editing software. According to the magazine What Digital Camera?, there are several good image manipulation packages that are completely free to download.
22
VHS videos to DVD I had a shock recently when someone told me that analogue videos and home movies are susceptible to the same degradation as photographic slides, prints and negatives. VHS tapes, Hi8 and Video8 are magnetic media: as the magnetic particles gradually lose their charge, the tape deteriorates. Depending on how carefully you store your tapes, you can expect at least a 20% reduction in playback quality after 10-25 years. The easiest way to convert videos to DVDs is to connect a video-cassette recorder (VCR) to a PC via an analogue-todigital video capture device. You’ll need to record the VHS video to your PC’s hard drive and then write the recorded video to DVD, using the DVD writer installed on your PC. Be warned, however, that VCRs are slowly becoming obsolete, so if you have a large number of VHS tapes to convert and don’t already have a VCR, this may be a good time to buy one. A medium-priced video capture device costs between £25 and £50, while a VCR costs from £30 upwards (refurbished models may cost less). If you only have a few tapes to convert, you might consider using a professional service. It’s worth checking online for the best deal: Asda Photo charges £27 per tape, while web-based conversion specialists such as digitalconverters.co.uk typically charge under ten pounds for a single VHS or Hi8 tape. Once your family photos and videos have been converted into a longer-lasting format, the next step will be deciding the best way to share them. You could burn them to DVD and give them out to family members, upload them to a cloud file-sharing system or create a family website. Be aware that if you choose cloud or web-hosting services to house your digital files, you may end up paying an annual fee. Thanks to my inherited collection, digitising family images now occupies much of my spare time, and I’ve even started to help friends who want family photos restored. It’s rewarding to know that, once converted to a digital format, these important visual records will go on giving pleasure far into the future.

Summer of Fun
PARENTING
Children learning about wildlife ©National Trust
Image: David Levenson
From family-friendly festivals to wet weather fun, we’ve plenty of ideas to keep the kids entertained this summer. Back to nature Fly a kite, go geocaching, build a den, explore a new trail – you don’t have to travel far or spend a lot of money to have fun outdoors. If you need some inspiration, try The National Trust’s 50 things to do before you’re 11 3/4 list, which is available as a free app, a printed leaflet, or a PDF. The app is particularly appealing for tech-savvy kids, as it lets them record their activities and earn printable certificates. Activities range from bug hunting and playing pooh sticks to canoeing, rock climbing and orienteering.
Festivals Festival season isn’t just for the grown-ups – there are plenty of family-friendly festivals to choose from, including: • Suffolk’s Latitude Festival has its own family campsite and kids’ area. Children can enjoy a whole host of activities, from pizza making to weird science. There are live shows for children of all ages, a kids’ disco, and plenty of music to dance along to. • At Camp Bestival children can learn circus tricks, be entertained by Mister Maker, Mr Tumble and Dick & Dom, jump on the world’s biggest bouncy castle, and lots more. • Cheshire’s Just So festival is specifically aimed at children and offers a ‘magical experience where art, music and literature are embedded and entwined in a beautiful and wondrous landscape.’ There’s everything from baby yoga and storytelling to dance workshops, live shows and a jelly fight! • Chagstock is rather smaller than Latitude or Bestival, but offers great value for money. An adult weekend ticket is £90, including camping, and under-12s go free. There’s a family camping area, play area, bouncy castle and various activities.
24
Learning through play The summer holidays are not the time to worry about spelling tests and practice papers. However, that doesn’t mean that your child can’t have fun learning a new skill, whether it’s sewing, baking or climbing trees. Many children struggle with learning how to tell the time. If yours is one of them, a Twistiti watch might help them master that particular skill this summer. Hours and minutes are brightly coloured and easy to read. There are also lots of interchangeable straps to choose from, including camouflage, animal print and stripes. Our eight year old tester said the watch made it much easier for her to work out the time, see www.twistiti.com.
Wet days at home The British weather being what it is, there are likely to be some rainy days this summer. It can help to have some plans up your sleeve, so here are a few ideas: • Build a den inside. A couple of chairs or a table, a few old sheets or blankets, and a washing line with pegs are all you need. Use the den for family board games, picnics and teddy bear tea parties. • Have a treasure hunt, with a series of clues, or a scavenger hunt to find mini prizes or chocolate coins. • Make some puppets out of old socks, cardboard boxes or wooden spoons; write a play and put on a performance for other members of the family. • If you just can’t tear them away from their screens, have a pyjama party. Add pizza, popcorn and playmates and you should be able to hide out in another room for at least an hour’s peace and quiet.

Melt Your Fat Away
WITH NEW LIPOLIS7
Summer’s here and you haven’t started that diet that you said you’d start every Monday, since Christmas. You think you need a face-lift. You’re unhappy in your skin and you’re not quite ‘beach body ready.’ Now that I’ve grabbed your attention, let me tell you how I can change all of the above in one single comprehensive treatment, with no needles or workouts involved! Lipolis7 is a slimming and skin rejuvenation device which is designed for spas, salons and homeuse. There is so much pressure on women to diet and get that perfect ‘beach body’ but i'm going to tell you how I can help you lose weight without putting the hours in at the gym (there’s method to my madness)… ...First let’s talk about how Lipolis7 works for weight loss. Fat within the legs, abdomen and buttocks literally shrinks, as Lipolis7 collapses the fat; promoting your lymphatic system which in turn eliminates the toxins out of the body. To me it’s science, to you it’s weight loss. After the fat is collapsed, radio frequency melts the fat further. The vacuum then speeds up your body’s metabolism, which in turn allows the fat in the cells to disperse. It’s been proven to take inches off of waist lines, after just a few treatments. CELLULITE, BE GONE! ‘What about loose skin’ you ask? ‘Won’t I need a skin tuck now that the fats gone?’ No, as I said, I can change it all in one treatment. The reason I created this machine is because I always hear about people being unhappy in their bodies, just as I was, or believing that plastic surgery and botox is the only route if you want to look younger. They couldn't be more wrong. In just one treatment you will notice significant results to the firmness of your skin; not just all over your body but also on your face. The Lipolis7 is also face friendly, meaning wrinkles and lines will appear reduced after one sitting. The treatment is non-abrasive and rejuvenates your skin, making you look younger, healthier and feel happier. You’ll definitely be left wanting more. I know what you’re thinking… ‘What about the side effects?’ I say ‘what side effects, there are none!’
Book your first treatment now, you will not regret it.

Why it's Smart
TO FACE UP TO CHANGE
We’ve all had one of those moments. You spot a frowning, older face reflected in a shop window that looks strangely familiar. As your brain starts to process the image, you realise with shock that you are staring at your own reflection. Aging features, paunchy midriff and slightly stooping posture… could that really be you? Take comfort, you’re not alone. We all tend to deceive ourselves when it comes to our appearance, and if it’s been a while since you took a long, unflinching look at yourself in the mirror, you may simply be unaware of the way your face and body has subtly altered. Several years ago the US-based Pew Research Center questioned 3,000 people and found that most respondents felt younger than their date of birth would suggest. Almost half of fifty year olds said they felt no older than forty, while those aged 65-74 felt up to nineteen years younger. Given that so many of us feel younger than our chronological age, it’s hardly surprising that we expect to look younger, too. While there’s no real harm in imagining yourself younger, selfdeception isn’t your friend when it comes to matters of styling. In order to keep looking your best, it helps to understand the way your body alters as you age.
Ch-ch-changes
“Turn and face the strange” sang the late, great David Bowie, warning: “Pretty soon now you’re gonna get older”. Whether you like it or not, it’s important to understand that the older “you” is likely to have a very different body shape, skin tone and hair colour than the twenty-something version you remember so well. People with fair skins will find their complexions become more sallow with age, while darker skins may suffer from uneven pigmentation. Hair loses its gloss, turning grey or white, and attempts to dye it back to a youthful shade are often unsuccessful because that colour is no longer compatible with a mature skin tone. Unless you are exceptionally motivated when it comes to diet and exercise, it’s also likely that you will gain weight as you age. At the same time you will experience some height loss: people typically lose almost half an inch (about one centimetre) every ten years after age 40.
Styling for men: how to be a grey fox
GQ Magazine advises its mature readers: “Your wardrobe should err far more on the side of style than fashion”, adding that the key to dressing well in your 50s, 60s and 70s is to make sure that clothes fit properly. Go through your wardrobe and throw away anything that squeezes in the wrong places. Swap trainers (especially the more brightly coloured styles) for smarter shoes and, where possible, buy longer-lasting, quality clothes instead of cheaper items.
32
Well-cut jackets worn with crisp, well-ironed shirts will keep you looking good whatever your age. Baggy trousers should be avoided at all costs, but if you’ve gained some weight since your younger days, it’s safer to buy straight-cut trousers than squeeze into today’s more tapered styles. You’ll find plenty of style advice for older men available online. A good place to start is the Grey Fox Blog (www.greyfoxblog. com) or alternatively you can find some inspirational styling ideas on Pinterest (pinterest.com).
Styling for women: why it’s wise to accessorise
Despite the fact that we are all living longer, clothes designers still seem to be obsessed with youth fashion. It can be frustrating to try on dresses, shirts and trousers designed for younger bodies, so if the tailoring doesn’t work with your contours, try experimenting with more flowing styles that don’t cling to your body shape. If you are sensitive about a thickening waistline, less-than-firm upper arms or a wrinkled neckline, simply conceal them with light, flowing clothing or a scarf. Choosing bold accessories as a focus for your outfit is a good way of diverting attention from features you’re less keen to show off. Keep make-up light and simple – heavy foundation can emphasise wrinkles and laughter lines. As hair tends to become drier and more brittle with age, consider experimenting with short hairstyles, layered or feathered to frame your face. Fortunately you’ll find plenty of websites that offer great fashion advice for mature women. Try Helen Walmsley-Johnson’s column The Invisible Woman at theguardian.com or visit Alyson Walsh’s blog site That’s Not My Age (thatsnotmyage.com). Knowledge is power. The key to styling in your later years is to understand the aging process and the way it affects your face and body. Age is something to be celebrated, not denied or ignored, and there’s much to be gained when - rather than ignoring or resisting the physical changes caused by aging you finally decide to embrace them. Once you’ve developed your own, personal style, the chances are you’ll look as young as you feel.

SUMMER LOVIN'
Have you packed for your summer holiday yet? You might want to find room in your case for one of these beauty treats… I have a confession. I am just a little bit addicted to travel sets. I love trying new products, and the miniature sizes make me feel like Alice in Wonderland. So it’s fair to say that when the
Neal’s Yard Remedies new skincare sets arrived at
my door I got rather excited. And I wasn’t disappointed when I tried them out. There are five sets available, including the Award Winning set, which includes Wild Rose Beauty Balm, White Tea Facial Mist, Beauty Sleep Concentrate and White Tea Facial Mask. Each treat is the perfect size for a few days away, and they all smell amazing. The facial mist is lovely and refreshing, and the balm is perfect for soothing chapped lips, travel weary feet and dry skin. Sets cost from £20, www.nealsyardremedies.com. If you’re not lucky enough to be jetting off to the Caribbean for a two week spa break, you can at least treat yourself to an at-home spa experience.
Janjira’s latest Therapy Massage Grapefruit and Tangerine candle smells
amazing – think cocktails on a balmy summer’s evening in the tropics. It’s made with natural ingredients, such as coconut oil.
SUDOKU’S
As it melts you can use it as a massage oil, or just a body oil if you don’t have a willing masseuse to hand. Divine. £32, from www.janjira.co.uk. If you’re looking for a styling product to give your wavy hair a lift, try Philip Mitchell’s Awapuhi Wild Ginger Texturizing Sea Spray. Spray a light mist over damp hair, scrunch your hair slightly with a towel or curl up into a bun, and dry off with a hairdryer or leave to air dry. Easy. It gives curls and waves a bit more oomph and adds volume and bounce to fine, lifeless locks. Unlike others on the market, it doesn’t leave hair feeling ‘crunchy’, stiff or sticky. From £7.25, www.paul-mitchell.co.uk. I’m sure you’re well aware of the importance of wearing sun tan lotion. Unfortunately for us sensitive types, protecting against skin cancer can mean putting up with extra irritation. Odylique’s Natural Sun Screen SPF30 doesn’t contain any artificial preservatives, colours, fragrances or sun filters, so it’s less likely to irritate skin. At £25 for a full size tube it’s not cheap, but it’s got to be one of the best natural sunscreens available. It’s easy to massage in, doesn’t leave a white residue, and is packed with nourishing ingredients such as shea butter and chamomile to leave skin feeling pampered. by Kate Duggan www.kateduggan.co.uk

Finding the Dress When it comes to planning a wedding every girls’ number one priority is finding her dream dress.
Minimalist, sleek and modern might have been what you had in mind, but full-on fairytale princess could be just the thing to make your dreams come true. It’s crucial to think about your height, figure and shape when looking for your gown. Carefully consider what is most flattering and what will make you feel truly special but comfortable too.
And fortunately, if you are working to a strict budget, there is more choice than ever before these days, at a price you can afford.
Strapless, shoulder-revealing designs might look perfect on the model, but will they really be right for you? Make sure you listen carefully to the honest opinions of your family and friends - they see you differently to how you see yourself. And, always take advantage of the professional advice that’s on offer from sales staff - they deal with hundreds of brides everyday and are well versed in what works best for all different shapes and sizes.
Local bridal boutiques are great. Not only do you receive the best in personalised customer service, but there’s a fabulous selection of lesser known brands and independent labels, that help to ensure your dress will be unique. Buying your wedding gown is the most special purchase you’ll ever make, and although it might be a ong process before you find ‘the one’ - it will be worth it in the end.
Upon settling on the style that’s going to make you look gorgeous, consider colours. Shades of white and cream can vary dramatically and as great as a stark white gown might look on a dark haired tanned bride, it could completely wash-out someone who is pale and fair - a complexion enhancing creamy, ivory hue would look so much better.
How to find ‘the one’… Be completely open minded as soon as you start your hunt for the perfect dress. You probably will have some preconceived ideas about what will suit you, and so will naturally avoid certain looks. But it really is essential to break from these thoughts and try as many different styles as you can get your hands on.

Jet Lag and Joy Lag
HOW TO RECOVER FROM YOUR HOLIDAY
We look forward to holidays as a chance to relax and revitalise ourselves. So why do we sometimes feel exhausted and miserable when we return – and how can we stop it happening? Jet Lag What exactly is jet lag? Jet lag is a term for symptoms caused by travel to a different time-zone, which can disrupt your ‘body clock’ - your natural, circadian rhythm. This influences your sleep, eating and toileting patterns as well as digestion, temperature and blood pressure. Jet lag symptoms include changed bowel habits, tiredness, headache, anxiety, confusion and nausea. Their severity usually increases with age but primarily depends on how many time zones you cross. One or two? No problem. Three to six? You’ll feel the effects. Seven to twelve? You may need a few days to fully adapt, particularly when travelling east; ‘west is best, east is a beast’, probably because it’s easier to adapt to a longer day and delay sleep than make yourself sleep after a shorter day.
Reducing Jet Lag Jet lag can be inconvenient at the start of your holiday, but it’s not usually a problem because you’re on holiday. When you return, though, you may not have long to adapt before you’re back at work and in your usual routine. While you can’t prevent jet lag, there are ways to help reduce its effects. • If possible, start gradually changing your routine several days before departure so that it’s closer to that of the new time zone. • Ensure you’re well-rested and hydrated before and during your flight. • Nap on the plane if night time will be a long time away when you arrive (or if it will be dawn). If you want to stay awake, keep active (this is recommended for long flights anyway, to reduce the risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis). • Avoid alcohol, which will dehydrate you and may increase jet lag symptoms. Remember that caffeinated drinks (e.g. tea, coffee and cola) may keep you awake. • When you arrive, adjust your day to the new time immediately rather than working up to it gradually. If you can, resist napping on arrival unless it’s night time. • While the NHS recommends going outside soon after arrival if it’s daylight, Dr Idzikowski, director of Edinburgh Sleep Centre, recommends using the calculator he created to tell you when to seek out or avoid daylight to reset your bodyclock, at www.ba.com/jetlag. Of course, you could always break your trip with a stopover or only holiday in countries with similar time zones: Western Europe, Greenland, Ghana – or parts of Antarctica.

Joy Lag (Post-Holiday Blues and Exhaustion)
It’s not uncommon to get back from your holiday and feel glum and exhausted. The weather is often more miserable at home and there’s no holiday to look forward to anymore. The thought of returning to your work and responsibilities (particularly if you’re not happy with them) can be daunting – as can that huge pile of holiday laundry. If you left in a rush and have been away for a while, your house may look untidy and dusty, making it hard to relax. Perhaps you overdid it on holiday, too, packing in too many activities and trips, not getting enough sleep and overindulging in alcohol and unhealthy foods.
Reducing Joy Lag These tips can’t make your overjoyed to return from holiday – they’re not magic! But they will help to reduce your joy lag. Before your holiday, try to pack gradually. For instance, if there’s only a week before your holiday and you have more than a week’s worth of socks and underwear, grab a suitcase and pack those spares now. Avoiding last minute panics, such as turning the house upside down for passports and sunglasses, should prevent you coming back to a mess. If you can afford it, book a treat to look forward to a few weeks post-holiday. Ensure you have easy meals in stock for your return and if you can, book a day or two off after your holiday to adjust. During your holiday, ensure you don’t cram every moment with trips or organised activities. Everyone needs time to chill. Shortlist trips, check the weather forecast and any special events and then plan the best days to venture elsewhere. Reserve the other days for relaxation, games or a gentle walk to a local park, beach or restaurant. If you can, try to make the journey home as fun and relaxing as possible. Perhaps you could break your journey at a restaurant, or even a hotel – doing the final run home on a full holiday breakfast. After your holiday, be kind to yourself. Cook easy meals or, if you can afford it, treat yourself to a meal out or a takeaway. Conversely, though, head for the washing machine as soon as you’re in the door and put a load in to wash. It will only take a minute or two and you’ll know you’ve made a start. Put suitcases out of sight until they’re empty. Here’s wishing you reduced jet lag, reduced joy lag and Happy Holidays!

Eco Chic
AT HOME
Being an eco-warrior doesn’t have to be a battle. With just a little thought and effort, you can decorate your home beautifully without harming the planet. Can ‘going green’ ever be stylish? Of course! While you might start with some basics, such as switching to LED light bulbs, insulating your loft or lagging your boiler, the end of your journey could be a chic, sophisticated home that’s filled with furnishings that are natural, sustainable and durable – in other words, minimising harm to the planet. From floors to ceilings, fabrics to accessories, small changes in your choices can create big eco-transformations. First, think about your priorities - because there are plenty of different ways to help the environment. Should you aim to be low carbon, non-toxic or energy efficient? Renewable, fair trade, locally sourced, organic or simply ‘natural’? The answer is not always obvious (and you will need to try very hard to satisfy every criteria) but some simple research will help you weigh up your options. Look out for labels, such as FSC to show that timber has been responsibly sourced, or Goodweave that tells you that a rug has not been woven by a child. Ask where things come from, what they contain, how they have been made. Buy from a specialist retailer who can demonstrate their green credentials, look out for reclaimed, recycled or upcycled products, or buy antique or vintage pieces – they are often very well made, can be breathtakingly good-looking and are certainly long-lasting; many would argue that they are the greenest of all, being the ultimate in recycling. Try to think less about all the things you think you need, and ask yourself instead what you really don’t need. The three rules of green living are, first, to reduce what you use; second, to reuse what you can; and third, to recycle as much as possible. So, rather than getting rid of things carelessly, consider how you could adapt them and give them another life. Perhaps you could re-cover that comfortable, perfectly sized old sofa instead of buying a new one, clad the top of an old table with a thin sheet of marble, or repaint a boring kitchen chair with a special effect, for example. When you do buy new, you may want to support local artisans or businesses (reducing your carbon footprint in terms of import miles, too), or fair trade, co-operative or social
TWells vase collection made from 100% recycled glass, from £15, Garden Trading: 01993 845559; gardentrading.co.uk.
initiatives overseas, which ensure fair pay and conditions for their workers. And it is well worth investigating eco choices for virtually everything around the house – from natural floorings such as sisal, cork, Marmoleum or wool carpets, to alternatives to cotton (which uses huge amounts of fresh water and pesticides) such as linen, hemp and alpaca. How much harm does a product cause to the environment during its production, and what toxins does it contain? Chemicals in paint, fabrics, synthetic carpets, plywood furniture and other man-made materials may ‘off gas’ for years, doing no one much good – another excellent reason to check the labelling. Lastly, always bear in mind the beauty of natural materials, from oak and slate to bamboo and linen, in terms of both colour and texture. Subtle shades of browns, greys and off-whites, and tactile appeal that ranges from super-soft to satisfyingly knobbly – everything works together without your having to try too hard, and they will age gracefully, too, adding gentle good looks to your home for a long time to come.
WHAT THE LABELS MEAN FSC The Forest Stewardship Council logo on wood products shows they have been produced from responsibly grown timber. Goodweave The label is an assurance that no child labour was used in the making of your rug. C2C Cradle to Cradle certification is a detailed appraisal of products throughout their life cycle. Low VOC Low in potentially hazardous emissions called volatile organic compounds (most often found on paint tins). EU Eco-label A flower symbol that can be used by goods and services which have a lighter environmental footprint than similar products performing the same function. Fairtrade The Fairtrade Mark is awarded to products that meet international Fairtrade standards, including meeting the welfare of employers and environmental standards. The Mobius Loop The symbol showing three arrows chasing each other in a triangle shape is an internationally recognised recycling symbol. Energy Efficiency The Energy Efficiency logo identifies produces which save or use less energy.

Can Sleeping Apart
BRING YOU CLOSER TOGETHER? Foundation, almost one in four of us now sleep in separate beds or bedrooms, and in a recent poll by silversurfers.com, 84% of respondents aged 50+ said they believed sharing a bed wasn’t essential for a happy relationship. After all, the Queen and Price Philip famously sleep apart. In a biography by Sally Bedell Smith, published in 2012, the Queen’s cousin Lady Pamela Hicks is quoted as saying: “In England, the upper class always have had separate bedrooms. You don’t want to be bothered with snoring or someone flinging a leg around. Then, when you are feeling cosy, you share your room sometimes. It is lovely to be able to choose.”
The duvet twitches, followed by footsteps on the bedroom floor and the creaking of a door: it’s four o’clock in the morning and your partner is on the move for the second time that night. Thanks to this interruption, you’re now wide awake, and as you lie there in the darkness, you wonder how to broach the subject of sleeping in separate beds... Most of us have experienced the irritation of being woken at night by a partner who is answering a call of nature, snoring loudly or thrashing around in a violent dream. If it’s a one-off event, the chances are you will simply roll over and go back to sleep, but if your sleep is disrupted on a regular basis, then you may feel compelled to take action. Most individuals need around eight hours’ sleep a night to function well, but this can vary from person to person. As a general rule, if you wake up feeling tired and have to catch up with a nap during the day, you’re probably not getting enough sleep. In the short term the symptoms of sleep deprivation can include memory loss, difficulty in concentrating and mood changes, but in the longer term lack of sleep can result in serious conditions such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes. In a recent survey, the Sleep Council found that women are far more likely to be disturbed by their partners than men, with 31% percent of female sleepers reporting sleep disruption, as opposed to 19% of males. While the health argument alone is enough to justify a conversation about separate beds, it’s a difficult topic to discuss face-to-face. If you’ve shared a bed for twenty or thirty years, it can feel like a betrayal to suggest you should sleep apart, which is why many light sleepers choose to put up with night-time disturbances rather than upset their partner. But if you’ve reached the end of your tether and are seriously considering the option of sleeping apart, there’s no need to feel alone. According to a 2015 survey by the National Sleep
50
So what are the options if you do decide to sleep separately? When the time came to replace an old double bed, Max and Celia Stoddart from Hampshire took the decision to replace it with twin beds. Celia says: “The idea came to us when we booked a week in a hotel. We’d reserved a room with a double bed but all they could offer us was a twin room. When we got home at the end of the week, we both agreed that we’d slept better than we had done in years. It made sense to buy twin beds, as that means we can both be in the same room without cramping each other’s space.” Vihann Khan’s sleep apnoea meant his snoring kept wife Nazneen awake at night. While he was receiving treatment, Nazneen regularly escaped to a spare bed set up in their guest room. Although Vihann’s condition has now improved, Nazneen still uses the spare bed from time to time. She says: “At times when I can’t sleep, it helps to know I have somewhere to escape, where I won’t disturb Vihann if I’m restless. We always start out the night together, but he knows there’s a chance he’ll wake up alone in the morning.” Jill and Maurice McGiver from Renfrewshire were unhappy about the idea of sleeping apart, but both agreed that they would sleep better if they had more space. For them, investing in a kingsize bed was the solution. “We have an average-size bedroom and the bed now takes up most of the available space,” says Maurice, “but it has been worth the sacrifice to get a good night’s sleep. If you live in a small flat or a cottage, a kingsize bed may not work for you, but for us it’s been a lifesaver.” Although these couples have found different solutions to their sleeping problems, all three agree that the changes they have made have not only improved their health and wellbeing, but have also enhanced their relationships. So perhaps the idea that sleeping apart can bring you together isn’t so far-fetched after all!

Gardening Now that the weather is really summery, everyone is rushing to their local garden centres, garden shows and nurseries to stock up on new plants for the garden. Before you get too carried away, don’t forget to make sure that the plants you buy have a good chance of surviving, not only once they get home, but also during the journey there. It is amazing how many plants are seriously damaged in the short period of time between leaving the garden centre and arriving in the new owner’s garden. If you really want to ensure that everything goes smoothly, it’s worth taking a few very sensible precautions. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking you can take something home the day you buy it if it is really far too large to fit in your car. The number of plants I have seen travelling home sticking out through the sunroof of a car is quite amazing. In a position like this, however slowly you drive, the foliage is going to be scorched and damaged and it is quite possible that a not too pliable stem may be broken. If a plant doesn’t fit in your car easily, then take advantage of the delivery service - almost all garden centres now offer delivery and this is usually free of charge within a reasonable radius. Admittedly it may mean that you have to wait until the delivery day for your area, but it is much better than seriously damaging your plant as you attempt to get it home yourself. If the plant does fit in your car then remember to wrap the root ball in a black bin liner or a box, to prevent the back of your car becoming full of compost, grit etc. Always use the garden centre as the last port of call before travelling home, as in hot weather temperatures build up fantastically fast in a closed car, even if you leave the windows or the sunroof open. Under these conditions the plants can soon be boiled alive, literally! Plants in the boot should be safer for a slightly longer period of time, but even then you should try to travel straight home once you have made your purchases. If you are absolutely determined to take something home that protrudes slightly from your car, then it is essential that you wrap up anything which is sticking out really well to prevent leaf scorch and damage to fine twigs. The garden centre should be able to provide you with something (and if not do you should do it yourself), but make sure that it is tied down extremely
52
GET YOUR PLANTS HOME SAFELY
well so that it can’t blow off on the way home. Remember that anything protruding from your car could potentially cause a driving hazard to other road users, so bear this in mind before you do anything too foolhardy! Even on a short journey home, plants which are exposed to exaggerated heat inside a car or the scorching effect of sunlight travelling through the car glazing can be seriously damaged, so cover them up with something to decrease the risk. It is worth taking a few old newspapers with you when you go to the garden centre, as these make perfect temporary tents. Remember that most plants prefer fairly constant conditions, so try not to put them through too many changes in a short space of time. Ideally, take them from one area in the garden centre to somewhere similar in your garden, and keep any travelling during hot weather to a minimum. If they look at all damaged from their journey then give them a week or two to recuperate in dappled shade in a protected position in your garden. And don’t forget that when you plant anything new in your garden, if the weather is at all dry it is well worth waiting until the evening or at least late afternoon before planting. Then make sure that everything is kept well watered, as this will increase the chances of the plants establishing without too much distress.

It's Not Always Good Water features are great in a garden but the chances are that from time to time you will have been frustrated by the water turning green. Generally, this will be due to one of many different types of algae infestation, and will get worse during warmer weather, but what should you do about it?
Blanket weed is long filaments of tangled algae, making a mass resembling a dense green blanket. Remove by pulling, raking or by using a stick or bamboo cane that you twirl into the algae, then compost it down in your compost bin. Surface floating pond weeds such as duckweed, which looks like lots of very tiny oval leaves floating on the water’s surface, can be a real nightmare too. It builds up very rapidly as a bright green surface layer and the best control is to regularly scrape the weed off using a good-sized kitchen sieve. Again it can be composted, but make sure you remove all of it or it will soon be back. Try to avoid the build-up of algae by creating your pond carefully and taking precautions with what you grow and keep in it. Avoid a very sunny position, as lots of sunlight increases the algal growth. Bear in mind, however, that a pond close to trees will become clogged by leaves in autumn! Make sure that the pond is as deep as possible, as algal growth is much more likely in shallow water, and avoid putting in too many fish as their excreta raises the water’s nitrogen level, which encourages algae. Surface floating plants,
TO BE GREEN particularly water lilies, will help to shade the water’s surface - ideal if the pond is in a fairly sunny site. You should also include a selection of oxygenating plants, available from your local garden centre or pond plant supplier. Some of these float in bundles in the water, others can be grown in containers, and all of them help raise the oxygen level in the pond and so decrease the algae problem. A spout or fountain will also oxygenate the water, but note that water lilies do not like water that is in motion.
Note that if you keep changing the water in an attempt to keep it clear, the pond never gets the chances to create its own natural balance and the situation will not improve. Be patient and usually, provided you try all the above, the pond will eventually sort itself out and clear water will return. You can use proprietary physical and chemical controls for algae, but make sure that whatever you choose is suitable and can be used safely around wildlife and your pond fish. Using barley straw to clear algae in ponds does work, but it is essential that the straw is from barley and no other cereal crop. If you can get hold of this, cram some into an old pair of tights and submerge in the water by weighing them down with several bricks. Alternatively, buy pads of barley straw (sometimes mixed with lavender stalks), and these will help do the job for you. Who would look after your children… My nephew was kept awake recently wondering what would happen to him and his sister should his parents die during his childhood. Who would he live with and who would look after him? I told him that they would come and live me and he was reassured. In order to make sure this would happen, however, his parents would need to include a provision in their Wills to appoint me as Legal Guardian. The appointment of a Legal Guardian is best dealt with by way of provision in a Will because a Will is less likely to be overlooked or lost if both parents have died. At Parry Carver we offer a free Will Storage facility. My nephew’s anxiety kept me awake the following night and I was further unnerved when I saw an article, originally published by The Telegraph, entitled “Who will look after your children if you die? Strangers?” The author of the article had obtained statistics to show that over 24,000 children are bereaved of a parent each year. If both parents died without legally appointing a guardian
for their children they risk exposing their children to extra stress, anxiety, uncertainty and turmoil at what would be an already extremely difficult time for them. Not only that, but it also exposes the entire extended family to needless stress and argument, trying to second guess who the appointed Guardian should be, and can escalate to court. If you are concerned about whom to appoint as Legal Guardian then ask your children if they are old enough; they might have their own views about what they would like to happen if you passed away. My eldest daughter is now a teenager with her own ideas as to where she might live if mummy and daddy passed away during her childhood. When you have chosen your Legal Guardian do remember to consult with them ahead of the appointment and seek their agreement. Raising a child is a difficult prospect and you need a Guardian who is fully on board. Straight forward Wills are not expensive and bring peace of mind not only to you but to your children too. If you would like information about making your Will please contact Toni Laycock or Joyce Anderson at Parry Carver for a free estimate on 01952 641291.

Using Credit and Debit Cards
ABROAD THIS YEAR
What you should know before you go!
Spending money abroad can be costlier than you think if you’re not prepared for the fees and ‘hidden’ charges. Whether you choose to take a debit or credit card, it pays to check the small print in your terms and conditions before you go. You could save a considerable amount in added interest and charges, potentially including: • An extra fee added to the currency exchange rate, known as a non-sterling transaction fee – this can be as much as 3% of each transaction. • Fees for withdrawing cash from ATMs abroad – although many people are aware of this fee when using a credit card, some banks also charge a cash withdrawal fee for debit cards. • Credit card companies can charge interest on cash withdrawn abroad, even if the balance is repaid in full at the end of the month. • Certain debit card providers charge a fee for shopping with their debit card abroad, so if there is no alternative, it can be cheaper to withdraw cash instead. With that in mind, here are a few tips on using credit and debit cards abroad, so you can save money and maximise your holiday spend. Specialist credit and debit cards for overseas use only Rather than taking your ‘regular’ credit or debit card on holiday, look for specialist cards designed to be used abroad, as these are intended to reduce the cost of holiday spending. If you find one that’s suitable and your application is successful, however, just make sure you pay off the balance in full every month. The interest rates on these cards are extremely high if you don’t, which could wipe out any savings you’ve made. The best overseas credit cards generally offer much better exchange rates than local retailers. So if you use a credit card and you’re asked which currency you want pay in, choose the local currency as it’s likely to save you money – more on Dynamic Currency Conversion below. Credit cards for holiday spending are generally easier to obtain than debit cards If your current bank doesn’t offer a specialist debit card for use abroad, you may have to switch your bank account to obtain one. Alternatively, you could just open a new account with the provider, but this might seem a little unnecessary when there is an easier alternative in credit cards. Be careful when you apply for a new card though - your credit file is adversely affected when applications are refused. The Money Saving Expert website offers an ‘eligibility calculator’ to give you an idea of your chances of acceptance, and help you narrow down the choices.
Debit cards can be better if you’re going to withdraw mainly cash Although taking a dedicated credit card for use abroad has many benefits, if you intend to withdraw mainly cash, a specialist debit card will probably be cheaper overall as there are usually no added charges or fees for this. Be careful about card ‘cloning’ When you use a card abroad, or anywhere in fact, be aware of the danger of cloning. This can happen when the card is taken out of your sight, or even when it’s right in front of you if you aren’t taking notice. When a card is cloned the person taking payment swipes it through a small device that looks like a pager - because this device is so small, it could be attached to a belt or placed in their pocket. It’s easy, therefore, to steal the information on the card’s magnetic strip. Your details are then imprinted onto a brand new card, or overwritten onto a card that’s already been stolen. Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) Some retailers abroad will offer to convert your purchase into sterling when you pay by card, so you can see exactly how much you’ve spent. This process is called dynamic currency conversion, or cardholder preferred currency. The problem is that you’ll probably lose out on the exchange rate by paying this way. Local retailers choose whether or not to offer this service, and in some cases may automatically convert your purchase to sterling without asking you. It’s a good idea, therefore, to check whether DCC has been used prior to signing a payment slip or entering your PIN. Avoiding the non-sterling transaction fee Although your bank uses the MasterCard, Visa and Amex optimum exchange rates, the charge for conversion adds a nonsterling transaction fee of up to 3% to your bill when you use a non-specialist card abroad. Finding the best card may take a little research, but your time and effort will be repaid via the extra holiday treats you’ll be able to enjoy.
Credit cards offer consumer protection
www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/travel-credit-cards
When you buy a product or service between £100 and £30,000 using your credit card, you’re automatically entitled to consumer protection. Under Section 75 legislation, your credit card provider accepts equal responsibility with the retailer for the item(s) purchased, making it easier to obtain a refund if necessary – an important consideration when you’ve bought the item abroad.

The Stars
OF THE NEW YORK MOTOR SHOW
It may be held in the city that never sleeps, but walk around the New York Motor Show’s tiny halls and very soon you may be in danger of drifting off. Thrilling and packed with big reveals this event was not, however, there were still a few new car unveils that could stave off unintentional narcolepsy – for a few minutes at least. Just like the country’s president, it’s a show that likes to flex its muscles, posture a little, but under the surface has very little real substance – and it’s dominated by the American manufacturers. Despite that, we managed to muscle our way past the smelly hot dog stalls and copious coffee shops to find six new models that caught our eye.
Mercedes AMG GLC 63 & GLC 63 Coupe
The only real European manufacturer to take the New York event seriously, Mercedes took the wraps off the car it’s billing as ‘perfectly at home off road or on the race track’. Featuring a 4.0-litre V8 with either 469bhp in standard guise, or 503bhp in ‘S’ trim, it’s an SUV capable of hitting 60mph in just 3.9 seconds. With a top speed of 155mph, the Germans say it’s a super sporty car with ‘everyday usability’. Prices are expected to start at around £65,000 with first deliveries in October.
Jaguar F-Type 2.0-litre
What’s that, a tiny 2.0-litre four cylinder in a hairy-chested sports car? It is indeed, but before you dismiss it out of hand, know this: small in cubic capacity it may be, but it’s still pushing out a not-so-weedy 296bhp. There’ll still be many that sneer in the face of such a diminutive lump making its way into Jaguar’s flagship, but the firm hope a 0-60mph time of 5.4 seconds, 155mph top speed and a 52kg weight reduction will be enough to see them temper their scowls. It’ll also bring the entry level price of an F-Type to £100 under £50k.
Dodge SRT Challenger Demon
Angry name? Check. Muscle car looks? Roger. Ridiculous and quite possibly unusable power output? Oh yes. Meet the 840bhp, Dodge SRT Challenger Demon – a car with so much horsepower that it can pull record-breaking wheelies. The 6.2-litre HEMI-engined monster uses the Hellcat’s 707bhp lump and adds a bigger supercharger and increased boost pressure to result in an animal that can hit 60mph in just 2.3 seconds. If that claim turns out to be true, it’ll put it on a par with a Bugatti Chiron. Bonkers.
Infiniti QX80
While the luxury arm of Nissan might be having a hard time in the UK, in the States it’s really rather successful – so much so that the brand feels a Range Rover rivalling concept is a good idea. The Infiniti QX80 Monograph is currently billed as a ‘design study’, but the manufacturer says it signals its intent to enter the large SUV segment. Whether it’ll be made remains to be seen, but even if it does, the chances of you ever seeing one in the UK is really rather slim.
Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk
In the seemingly ever-raging battle to produce the world’s most powerful SUV, Jeep has made a bold claim for the title with this – the 707bhp Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. Quite why it’s a title any manufacturer wishes to secure is beyond us, but the Americans have snapped it up nonetheless. Capable of 60mph in 3.5 seconds, a top speed of 180mph and a standing quarter mile in 11.6 seconds, this might just be a Jeep Cherokee that’s mildly acceptable to own.
Toyota FT-4X
Remember the days when you threw a shoebox full of Lego on the living floor and attempted to make something that resembled a car? Well, that appears to be exactly how Toyota’s designers created their latest FT-4X concept car. Half grown-up Tonka toy, half fridge freezer, the offroader’s looks can kindly be described as ‘bold’. The maker says it hints at what the replacement for its equally visually-challenging, American-only FJ Cruiser could look like, if it ever gets the nod. by James Baggott

Paddleboarding
To prove just how practical its new city car can be, Kia challenged James Baggott to tackle the Italian coast on a paddleboard. It’s all too easy to pigeonhole cars like the Kia Picanto as city centre shopping carts, fit for nothing more than a quick trip to the supermarket. While it might be true that the Korean car firm’s baby has traditionally been bought by grandparents and students, it’s an image the brand is desperately hoping it can shed. This is the third generation of Kia’s second bestselling UK car and with it comes more aggressive looks, a sharper driving style and clever technology aimed at helping it appeal to a far broader spectrum of buyers. Kia believes it can convince customers that while it might still be an easy and fun to drive little car, the new Picanto can still cope with the bigger adventures city dwellers might hanker for too. That’s why I find myself squeezed into a wet suit, dripping with sea water after a paddle-boarding adventure on the Italian coastline. To prove just how versatile its new Picanto can be, Kia has invited us to the Toscana coastline, crammed two blow-up paddleboards, wet suits and a picnic in the back of one of their latest city cars and pointed us towards the coast. Costing from just £9,450, the Picanto now boasts more passenger and luggage space but with no overall increase in size over the previous model. The Koreans have managed that by increasing the wheelbase while at the same time reducing overhangs. That means inside there’s a 25 per cent increase in luggage space, topping 255 litres with the rear seats up and 1,010 litres with them down. That extra carrying capacity certainly comes in handy. The two giant paddleboards are easily swallowed in the boot, while overnight bags for two and accessories find a home too. In fact, it’s surprising just how much space there is left over. There’s a choice of engines in the new model. Our test vehicle – in ‘2’ specification – features the 1.0 litre 66bhp unit. But there’s also a 1.25 litre 83bhp option and a 1.0 litre turbocharged option. As fun as the latter sounds, even the lowest output unit hauls the city car along at a perfectly adequate rate (despite the addition of a lot of luggage) hitting 60mph in 13.8 seconds
66
IN A PICANTO
and a top speed of 100mph. What’s more it’ll do that while sipping fuel at a miserly 64.2mpg rate on the combined cycle. Crossing the rich, lush green vine-covered Italian countryside near Grosseto as we attempt to find the beach, the Picanto’s light steering and peppy engine impresses, as does its ability to soak up potholes you’d fear would otherwise swallow it. As we approach the beach, the asphalt crumbles away and the Picanto skips between giant holes littering the sand-covered track to the water. The beach at Grosseto is being battered by strong winds, whipping up a swell that’s enthralling kite surfers, but not particularly pleasing for paddleboarders. Thankfully a sheltered tributary that runs deep into the countryside offers far more tempting sheltered waters. After an hour on the lightly rippled river, we decide to embark on some impromptu surfing in the ravaging waves lashing the beach. Despite the clouds, it’s surprisingly warm beneath the white-capped surf as we fall time after time beneath the waves. While drying off in the supportive front seats of the Kia, there’s time to play with the kit. It’s functional not flashy inside, and despite the smaller screen for the multimedia system on this mid-range ‘2’, it still works well with your phone, streaming Spotify perfectly. There’s air conditioning, electric front and rear windows, heated door mirrors and a leather trimmed steering wheel to enjoy and that’s on top of the options standard across the range, which include remote central locking, USB and AUX ports, electronic stability control and automatic emergency braking. The latter was well demonstrated on our return trip, triggering when a sheep strayed into the middle of the road. The system automatically brakes for drivers to a complete stop when it senses a crash – in this case assisting to the point where the sheep narrowly avoided becoming another statistic. Kia has certainly moved its Picanto on in leaps and bounds from its predecessor. On the road it’s sharper to drive, quieter and more sporty than ever before. Its new technology – which on higher specification models even includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – is impressive, while it’s a comfortable car to spend time in. What’s more, it’s always satisfying to know that even though it’s a car unlikely to shed that blue rinse stereotype, if you are a more adventurous owner it can cope admirably with all the kit you’ll need to escape city life.

If It Appreciates, Buy It Those wise words were said by oil tycoon John Paul Getty: a man who knew something about looking after money. And he’s right. Especially when it comes to cars. If you have half-million plus to buy a Ferrari Dino 246 GTS then, I say, you are wise to make that purchase. For next year you might make £100,000 when you sell it. But if you only have £10,000 to buy a Fiat 500 then I reckon, fun car as it is (I’ve got one), you are mad.
IF IT DEPRECIATES, LEASE IT
I bought the aforementioned 500 for my daughters, after the “deposit contribution”, the service package, the low RFL fee and the Fiat-backed lease deal were factored in the monthly payments were cheaper than if I had bought a two year old model with 20,000 miles on the clock. Plus I’ve an extra two years before the MOT is due. You get no discounts for cash either. Dealers sell the finance options because they get commission and the repayment risk is passed to the finance firm. A win-win for them. So, keep your money in the bank instead of watching it drain away on what you spend on that car.
Two cars from the same company at polar opposites on the payscale, but I advise you to buy the expensive one. For the 500, and any other mass-market car, I advise leasing every time.
Mr Getty was right. Collectable cars go up in value, so buy, buy, buy. But production line jellymoulds? Forget it. Lease every time.
Manufacturers and dealers are desperate to shift cars so deals on new ones are phenomenal. When

Shwedagon Pagoda
In Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, a golden pagoda rises on Singuttara Hill, dominating the skyline as it has done, according to legend, for over 2,000 years. Far humbler in its early days, it is now over 100 metres high and is entirely covered in gold plates. Erected to house eight miraculous strands of the Buddha’s hair, rebuilt and extended over time, it is the most sacred monument in the country. Pilgrims add offerings of gold leaf every day, hoping to earn merits, though none could ever emulate Queen Shin Saw Pu who donated her weight in gold in the 15th century. At the foot of the steps leading up to the platform, lion-like mythological creatures guard each of the four entrances where stalls brim with multicoloured prayer flags, incense sticks, flowers, candles and more. The pagoda remains out of sight but when you emerge at the top, diamonds and gold hit you like lightning, a dazzling land of spires and shrines, stepped roofs and celestial beings gathered all around the central monument. The base is made of bricks covered in gold plates, the first terrace is reserved for monks and men, then comes the massive bell-shaped section containing the relics and finally the spire silhouetted against the blue sky, boasting an amazing three tonnes of gold with Buddhist symbols and an umbrella crown encrusted with 4,531 diamonds, the largest a 76 carat solitaire. It defies imagination, and barefoot pilgrims and visitors must pause to catch their breath before proceeding clockwise around the stupa. Buddhist robes flutter all around, pink, brown, red or gold, and there is much bell ringing and
68
MYANMAR
chanting, prostrations, prayers, flickering lights and jasmine garlands leaving their scent in the air. The stupa is a closed structure but it can take an hour or two to stop at every pavilion and shrine. Among the most popular shrines are those dedicated to the eight days of the week (Wednesday is divided in two for astrological reasons), each one linked to a planet and a symbolic animal, giant bird, elephant, tiger and more. Many devotees make a wish at their birthday shrine, pouring water as a symbol of life and offering small umbrellas to keep away bad luck. Couples pray at the child-granting shrine, others meditate in the Footprints Pavilion or gaze at the well where the Buddha’s hair was cleaned before it was enshrined. Meanwhile, tourists look up in awe at the 40 tonne bronze bell donated by King Thayarwaddy. Every morning at dawn, a monks’ procession makes it way to the pagoda to lay fresh offerings of flowers and food and wash the statues with sandalwood-scented water. Special celebrations are held at the time of the full moon, the Buddha’s birthday and the autumn Festival of Lights when over 9,000 candles are lit after dark. It is sheer magic and one almost forgets that in modern times the pagoda has witnessed its share of political rallies and turmoil. Today, as Myanmar’s fledgling democracy finds its feet, it is once again a purely religious site. When the authorities moved the capital to Nappyidaw in 2005, 320km to the north, they graced their brand new city with a replica of Shwedagon. But some say it is 30 cm lower than the original and could never replace the Great Yangon Pagoda, ‘glistening with its gold like a sudden hope in the dark night of the soul.’ (Somerset Maugham)

The Great Beyond TECH TOOLS TO HELP YOU WHEREVER YOU MAY ROAM Whether you’re hiking up mountains or just trying to get around Glastonbury, travelling can be made much easier with a few well-chosen gadgets - and some of the available options might surprise you. Fancy a hairgrip that doubles as a saw? Such things exist: the Monkey Business Multi-Tool Hairgrip (around £8.50) comes in stainless steel and is shaped to include a little wrench, screwdriver, cutter and ruler as well as being a hair grip. You can also use it in shopping trolleys instead of coins, although that only applies to pre-2017 ones: the new twelve-sided pound coin has sadly made most trolley coins redundant. Fancy something a bit sturdier? Since the wonderful Leatherman became a global hit, there’s been no shortage of multi-tools that attempt to provide everything you could possibly need in a single gadget. If you have Leatherman ambitions but not the accompanying budget, you’ll find cheaper options from the likes of supermarket favourite Rolson, whose 36019 multi-tool offers 12 stainless steel tools for £13.41. Just don’t take it anywhere you’re not allowed blades, such as airports. If you’d rather have something a little more high tech, the world of wearables continues to grow: for example TomTom’s Runner watches combine activity tracking with GPS for around £59, and there are even GPS-enabled trackers for kids such as the Witmoving Wrist Watch, which is available for around £19. The benefit of such kids’ watches is that they enable a lost child to press the SOS button to call a parent or guardian, and the companion app can tell you exactly where the child is if they wander off. Just be aware that anything that uses a phone SIM, such as the Witmoving watch, will need a data contract: a pay as you go deal from the likes of budget operator Giffgaff, which uses O2’s network, offers reliable coverage for a low price. You can spend much more on a fully-featured smartwatch that does pretty much everything, but for now if it’s pure activity tracking you’re looking for, a running watch such as the TomTom is a better and cheaper option. Chances are that wherever you’re going, you’ll want to keep your phone charged - and if you’re far from a plug socket that isn’t always easy. The most effective portable chargers, such as the Anker PowerCore 13000 (around £24), are designed to be charged at home and then used when your phone battery runs out of puff, and they boast a range of features to charge quickly and to turn off the power when the battery’s full. They’re a little bulky compared to emergency phone chargers, which tend to give you just enough power to make a few calls, but they’re good for multiple full charges. Solar chargers are more environmentally friendly - at least, after they’ve been manufactured - and they can be quite cheap: Amazon currently lists a number of decent 10000mAh solar chargers for around £15, some of which can charge multiple devices simultaneously and double as LED flashlights. Be aware that such chargers only use solar energy as a backup: like other portable chargers they’ve got a great big battery inside them that you’re expected to charge before you go out and about. The panel is there for peace of mind should your adventure last longer than expected, but in the British summer don’t expect a full charge to happen very quickly.

A World Without Wires THE BEST WAY TO GET WIRELESS WI-FI AT HOME OR ON THE GO If you go out and about this year, you’re in for a happy surprise: You don’t need to be travelling far from home to get free Wi-Fi. Many UK towns and cities have free Wi-Fi schemes - and most casual eating and coffee chains usually offer some form of free internet access. Just watch what you’re signing up for: such publicspirited provision is often there in order to capture valuable marketing data, so keep a close eye on any tick-boxes you’re expected to complete. It’s also a good idea to use a virtual private networking (VPN) service such as Tunnelbear (www.tunnelbear.com)
or
Windscribe
(www.
windscribe.com) to keep your connection private if you intend to use public Wi-Fi services. You never know who’s looking in. If you’re staying at home and just want to get better reception around the house or in the garden, there are several ways to make your Wi-Fi work harder. The first, cheapest and simplest thing to do to improve your Wi-Fi connection is to move the router: ideally it should be higher than your furniture and obstacles such as radiators, which are hard for the radio waves to pass through. If your wireless router is getting on a bit it’s probably stuck with older, slow Wi-Fi technology, so if you can stretch to an 802.11ac wireless router you’ll notice a huge difference in speed and range - provided of course your laptop, tablet or smartphone has the same Wi-Fi support. If the speed is fine but the signal just doesn’t go far enough, a Wi-Fi extender may be just the trick: it connects to the network and throws the signal further, so for example you might extend your home Wi-Fi network to the garden or patio. It isn’t expensive or difficult, either: good Wi-Fi extenders are available for less than £40 and take seconds to set up.

Who Needs to Run
WHEN YOU CAN WALK?
It’s my first time with a local Nordic walking group, and no matter how hard I try, I remain at the back of the line while my companions steam on ahead. When we stop I am more than slightly out of breath and deeply apologetic about lagging so far behind. The others laugh at my serious expression, telling me that most ‘newbies’ quickly learn to keep up, once they have mastered the simple technique required. My fellow walkers come from different backgrounds and are of varying heights, ages and fitness levels. However, all are unanimous in their praise of Nordic Walking. As we sit and chat over a cup of coffee at the end of the session, they tell me about the transformational effect walking has had on their lives, from aiding recovery after a hip operation to helping with weight loss.
Although thirty minutes is the ideal length of time for a daily walk, Dr I-Min Lee, a professor at Harvard Medical School, suggests starting with three ten minute walks each day, then building up to the full 30 minutes when you feel more confident.
Walking the Nordic Way
The right way to walk
Nordic Walking originally began as a summer training regime for cross-country skiers. In order to walk the Nordic way, you use poles that engage your arms and upper body, propelling you forward. This removes pressure from the knees, making you feel much lighter on your feet; that’s the reason why Nordic Walking is often taken up by people who have undergone a hip replacement operation. It’s recommended that you learn the technique required from a qualified instructor, and you can find lists at either nordicwalking. co.uk (call 01392 956 856) or britishnordicwalking.org.uk (call 01446 773 876). Classes range from gentle walks for people with health concerns to workout walks designed to improve fitness, encourage weight loss and tone the body. Most instructors will provide the poles required; other than that, all you need is good walking shoes and appropriate, weatherproof clothing.
Why walking is good for health However, if you’re not keen on striding out with the help of poles, a reasonably brisk conventional walk can do you almost as much good. The UK Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines on physical activity recommend that adults participate in 150 minutes of “moderate intensity, aerobic, physical activity” every week, which breaks down to thirty minutes of exercise per day, five days per week. If every person in the UK followed the CMO’s recommendations, it would save 37,000 lives each year and lead to around 300,000 fewer cases of type 2 diabetes. The health benefits are even greater for heart patients. Research carried out by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California discovered that brisk walking was more effective than running in reducing the risk of heart disease. What’s more, the benefits of walking aren’t limited to physical health. The mental health charity “Mind” claims that countryside walks can raise self-esteem and reduce depression, and most doctors agree that exercise can improve sleep patterns.

It’s vital to maintain a good posture when you walk, so tighten your stomach muscles and keep your spine straight, with shoulders relaxed and your chin parallel to the ground, trying not to lean too far forward or too far back. Let your arms swing naturally and use the whole of your foot as you walk, rolling from heel to toe. Good shoes will improve stability and allow your feet to bend naturally: they should be made of waterproof material, with a thick heel (to absorb the shock as your heel contacts the ground) and flexible soles. Also look out for an Achilles notch: a little dip cut into the back, designed to relieve stress on the Achilles tendon. Walkers should always be aware of any potential hazards in their path, but don’t be tempted to look down at your feet, as this will alter the alignment of your spine. Casting your gaze just a few feet ahead allows you to keep your head upright whilst still looking out for trip hazards or muddy puddles. Although figures released by the RAC Foundation suggest that pedestrian casualties on our roads are reducing year on year, it is sensible to take precautions if part of your walking route includes a public highway. The Highway Code advises walkers to keep to the right-hand side of the road so they can see oncoming traffic, but to temporarily cross over before a sharp right-hand bend in order to remain visible to traffic. Wearing high visibility clothing or reflective materials at night or in murky conditions will also help car drivers see you. Back at home, after my first Nordic walking session, I’m aware that my body has had a thorough workout and I look forward to soaking in a hot bath as a reward for all that exercise. Next time I see a runner I won’t feel my usual pang of guilt that I’m not out there as well, with my heart racing and my feet pounding the tarmac. I’ve found my ideal form of exercise, and it’s as simple as putting one foot in front of the other.

Notes from your local Muxton Councillor In the autumn your Muxton Parish Councillors will be starting the process which if successful will result in the establishment of a separate Parish council for Muxton. The timetable has been set by Telford and Wrekin Council and the first elections will be in May 2019. The first stage is to submit a petition to the Council signed by Muxton residents, and I hope as many residents will support the application so that monies collected in Muxton is spent in Muxton.
LEAFLET DISTRIBUTION Do you have leaflets or flyers that you would like delivered with this magazine?
Prices from £40 per 1000 WE CAN ALSO DESIGN AND PRINT THEM FOR YOU TOO! For further details please contact
Fleur Abel on 01952 603457
Due to the summer holidays and an early printing deadline, at the time of writing, Telford and Wrekin Council have not as yet responded to the complaint regarding the change to Muxton school catchment area. Such a delay in responding, while allowed, indicates the contempt the Council appears to hold with regards to the parents of Muxton School children.

Books
LAZY DAYS Whether you’re stretching out on a sun lounger, or just grabbing an hour’s peace and quiet in your garden, a good book is a summer essential in our opinion.
Standard Deviation – Katherine Heiny
Graham’s second wife, Audra, is warm, sociable and always ready to throw herself headlong into any situation. The total opposite of his first wife, Elspeth, in fact. So when Elspeth unexpectedly comes back into Graham’s life, he finds himself wondering how on earth he could have fallen in love with two such different women, and whether he’s ended up with the right one. If you like quirky characters, wry humour and reflections on the absurdities of everyday life, this book is for you.
Palace of Curiosities – Rosie Garland
Abel and Eve are not like other people. Abel’s body heals itself. He has no idea how old he is, but his fractured memories suggest he’s been alive for a very long time. Eve – the Lion Girl – is covered from head to toe in golden hair. Together they are the two main attractions in a show featuring extraordinary people. Set in Victorian England, this is a beautiful tale of humanity and what it means to be ‘different’ in a world that prizes convention.
Reservoir 13 – Jon McGregor
A teenage girl goes missing while on holiday in an English village. Seasons come and go and life goes on, but the girl’s mysterious disappearance continues to affect village life. Some people dream of finding her alive, others of discovering her body. This is not a crime novel, more a glimpse into human nature. There are a lot of characters, and you get to know each one as they go about their daily lives. It’s a quiet book, but it certainly draws you in.
100% Real – Sam Talbot
If you’re looking for inspiration for healthy, tasty summer recipes, this book could be just what you need. While its focus is on clean eating, it’s not just about chia seeds and green tea. Recipes include White Fish Curry, Jerk Chicken, and Dark Chocolate Soufflé with Rum Cream. Recipes are accompanied by full page photos, and are, on the whole, easy to follow. From light lunches and snacks to dishes to impress friends, you’ll find yourself reaching for this cookery book time and time again.
Once in a Blue Moon Lodge – Lorna Landvik
A warm, comfortable kind of story with great characters, first loves, old flames and family dynamics. Once in a Blue Moon Lodge follows a family over two decades – Nora, her mother Patty Jane and her grandmother Ione. It’s the sequel to Patty Jane’s House of Curl, but works as a stand-alone novel. There is a large cast of characters, and the timeline is hard to follow at times, as it jumps from past to present. Nevertheless, it’s a very enjoyable beach read.
The Trouble with Goats and Sheep – Joanna Cannon
It’s 1976 and 10 year old Grace’s neighbour, Mrs Creasy, has gone missing. With her best friend Tilly in tow, Grace sets out to solve the mystery. It soon becomes apparent that the community is hiding plenty of secrets, some of which go back almost a decade. Grace comes across as rather naive for her age at times, but she’s very likeable. A funny, easy read that will make waiting around at a station or airport much more bearable.

Kitchen Recipe
Take some... Traditional values and service Established in 2003, The Kitchen Depot is a family-owned and run business that remains true to our founding values of honesty, integrity and sheer professionalism. We take immense pride in our reputation for service and commitment to our customers, with more than half of our business coming from customer recommendations to their family and friends.
...add a dash of… Quality and Value
All of our kitchens are manufactured to an exceptionally high German specification, on site, in our own factory and by our own people. That way, we have total control over the product quality, the production timescales AND the manufacturing costs. With no middle-man – you buy direct and we are able to pass these time and cost savings directly onto our customers.
…then a big chunk of…
Ownership and Responsibility
Unusual in this insincere world, admittedly. But we mean it. We are totally committed to providing you with the best kitchen, at the best price, installed with the highest level of service and professionalism. And on the exceptionally rare occasion that something could have been done better – we hold our hands up – and put it right. Fast. No fuss. No hassle. No argument. Just sorted.
...a soupçon of…Harmony At The Kitchen Depot, we know that we are only as good as our people. They ARE The Kitchen Depot brand. That’s why we look after our staff every bit as well as we look after our customers. Because we know that happy workers, pulling together in harmony, make for happy customers.
