Why Start Afresh

WHEN YOU COULD JUST REFRESH?

Beautiful kitchens on a budget According to a recent study, the average Brit will spend around two years of their life redecorating and, unsurprisingly, 45 percent of us admit that our home is still a ‘work in progress’. Without question, the kitchen is the busiest room in the home – it deserves some TLC!

Worktops with the wow factor

If yours has seen better days, and you’ve recently found yourself contemplating an upgrade, ask yourself these three simple questions:

The range available through Granite Transformations Shrewsbury includes finishes to suit all designs, with finishes in granite, quartz, recycled glass, porcelain and the stunning Trascenda™ Collection, which mimics the finish of a marble surface, at a fraction of the cost. On trend and under budget – what more could you ask for?

• Is your kitchen layout working for you? • Are the carcasses still in good condition? • Would you rather spend three weeks without a functioning kitchen (and spending a small fortune) or refresh what’s already there, in a matter of hours? No brainer, right? Most of us are already satisfied with the existing layout and cabinetry in our kitchens, so why pay someone to rip it all out and start again, when you could save weeks of upheaval and demolition? With Granite Transformations’ vast range of replacement worktops, doors and tiles, you’re only ever hours away from achieving your dream kitchen and, better yet, it could cost less than half the price of a replacement kitchen. Before you start picking up the phone to a bespoke kitchen design company, or the local carpenter, consider replacing the surfaces, doors and splashbacks - completely transforming the space, at a fraction of the cost. Here, Richard Williams at Granite Transformations’ Shrewsbury gives us the inside story on how his team of specialist, in-house designers and fitters can achieve the kitchen of your dreams, in time, on budget, and with no compromise on style.

Shape up those shakers

Most kitchens have the foundation of a great, working space. You may find you have ample storage solutions but have grown tired of the design or feel of the room. In recent years, pine and Formica cabinetry has fallen in popularity, in favour of more contemporary, matte and gloss designs in cool, classic tones. Switch up your pine panelling, for a dove grey shaker style look, like the Granite Transformations’ door fronts in Matte Stone Grey. This will cut costs down considerably, leaving enough room in the budget for stylish appliances and accessories.

e or f Be

Long gone are the days when kitchen worktops were simply a place for food preparation. With the introduction of cordless device charging, integrated television screens and pop-up electrical sockets, kitchens have become a truly multi-purpose space and the hub of the modern family home. A practical space deserves a hardwearing surface, with no limitations on style.

Granite Transformations offer a range of stunning surfaces and, with their exclusive ‘top that fits on top’ service, beautiful highgrade work surfaces are fitted directly over existing worktops, eliminating the need for removal, shortening the project timescale and reducing costs.

Splashbacks with style

With our splashbacks covering a vast area of the kitchen space, they can make or break the feel of a room. If yours have seen better days, specifically in those frequently used areas such as the hob or the sink, now may be the time to look into replacing hem. Ripping out sections of tile is a lengthy, costly and messy job so instead of replacing, refresh! Granite Transformations’ range of replacement tiles and glass mosaics take the fuss out of installing that touch of design to your kitchen. They can be fitted directly on top of existing tiles, minimising the install time significantly, and allowing the team of skilled in-house fitters to fit your splashbacks to an impeccable standard. Granite Transformations do not use subcontractors, ensuring quality of fit, and with most products fabricated locally, you can feel safe in the knowledge that your kitchen will show up on time, to your exact specifications and will be finished by an experienced fitter. So, there you have it – the kitchen of your dreams, without the demolition, lengthy design and install process, and with no compromise made on style. You heard it here first. If you’d like help with some creative ideas on how to refresh your kitchen, then contact the team at Granite Transformations Shrewsbury on 01743 585988 or visit one of our showrooms at:

AND THE BEACH

From a £3.75 multi-tasker to a £70 serum, we have plenty of beauty goodies to tempt you with this month. Still hiding your legs away under loose trousers and maxi dresses? Try Neals Yard Remedies’ Seaweed Salt Scrub. It’s superb at getting rid of dry skin and leaves legs feeling much softer and smoother. The salt and kaolin also help to draw out toxins. And, as an added bonus, the essential oils, including ginger, grapefruit and frankincense, smell amazing, so the scrub is a real pleasure to use. It’s £18 from www.nealsyardremedies.com. If, like me, you prefer a serum to a heavy moisturiser in the summer, and you’re over 30, you might want to check out Murad’s Rapid Age Spot Correcting Serum. It’s been proven to reduce age spots and other pigmentation, while hydrating, softening and brightening. Results are impressive. Some benefits can be seen instantly, while others take a few weeks. More than 1,000 people took part in the clinical trial, and 100% of them agreed that the serum lightened their dark spots, reduced discolouration and generally improved the appearance of their skin. Personally, I saw a noticeable difference in just over a week. The serum costs £70 from John Lewis, House of Fraser and Debenhams. You can’t beat a multi-tasker, especially when you’re short on suitcase space and want to cram some more flip-flops in. Frances Prescott’s Tri-Balm is my new favourite multitasker. It’s a cleanser, exfoliator and moisturiser in one, and a stick balm, so you just massage it into your skin, rinse off and pat dry. Tri-Balm is formulated with natural oils and waxes, including rice bran oil, wheatgerm oil and beeswax; it’s rich in hyaluronic acid and antioxidants, and super gentle. Skin feels clean, plumped and soft instantly. It costs £46 at www. francesprescott.com. Tea-tree oil is another great multi-tasker. Pop a bottle in your beach bag to treat scrapes, insect bites, spots and more. Meghan Markle swears by it, saying “The one thing I cannot live without when I’m traveling is tea-tree oil. If you get a cut, a mosquito bite, a small breakout … it’s my little cure it all.” Thursday Plantation’s tea-tree oil is harvested in Australia and is said to be one of the purest on the market. It’s £5 from Boots, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose. We all know the importance of cleansing, but most of us are guilty of falling into bed without taking our make-up off on at least the odd occasion. I keep a packet of Faith in Nature’s Facial Wipes in my bedside cupboard. They’re free from fragrance and alcohol, and contain aloe vera and chamomile to soothe and hydrate skin. (Plus, unlike some wipes I’ve tried, these actually do remove make-up.) They’re £3.25 from www.faithinnature.co.uk.

Lipocontrast Lipocontrast is a body contouring treatment, based on advanced Cryothermal technology. At Park Street Clinic, we are one of the few clinics in the West Midlands to have this advanced machine. Lipocontrast delivers rapid results by heating, cooling and heating the fat cells, reducing body fat without damage or invasive methods. 33% of the treated fat tissue will be eliminated and gradually breaks down through the metabolic system. Approximately 80% of the final result will be visible within 20 days. Typical daily activities can be resumed straight after treatment, including returning to work and exercise regimes. Lipocontrast is suitable for most areas of the body.

Super IPL Treatment Humans have had a problem with hair for thousands of years. Plucking, waxing and needle epilation are all temporary and needle epilation is only capable of treating one hair at a time. Excess hair may be the result of medical conditions, but the pressure to remove it may be cosmetic. Cultural norms and peer group pressure often require the removal of hair in certain regions such as the face, axillae (armpits), legs and bikini line for women, and the chest and back for men. Our Super IPL treatment is 10 times faster than standard IPL. It is clinically-proven, safe and effective, giving long-term removal of unwanted hair. Treatments start at just £30.

Seasonal Style Searching for some seasonal style inspiration? Ashley Gamble, from Ashley Gamble Hair and Beauty Ltd in Shifnal, gives his expert insight into the current trends for hair... Bye, cold weather and dark mornings. We’re totally over our Winter Wardrobes now and ready to cast aside our jumpers and boots. For those embracing this Summer’s trends, the stylists at Ashley Gamble Salon Ltd will make sure your hair complements your overall look. Bold looks are all over the catwalks. With cold shoulders still huge, alongside deconstructed shirts, florals, 80s party wear and slogan tees, your hair needs to make a strong statement as well as your clothes. The latest buzzword in the salon is ‘power’ and the new power hair helps you to be your most confident self. New power curls take the best of the 80s (bouncy volume) but leave behind the bad (crispy perms) for a soft, feminine and bold look ideal for special occasions. Big hair still has staying power. For a wearable, polished look, the ‘power pony’ is bang on trend. Low, sleek and perfect, this is no in-ahurry tieback; it means business. Slicked back styles are sexy and simple but pack a powerful punch. The wet look is back and is fabulous for summer styles.

10

Let your topknot do the talking: buns are still in vogue but for a 2018 update, pile them high. And wear with confidence. When it comes to colour, take inspiration from pastel hues and soft, subtle tones which will complement your skin tone; we specialise in high end ombres and root drags which flatter your face. For a new look, wearable take on catwalk trends, advice on styling, or just a professional blow dry that will make you look amazing, our stylists are happy to help so come in for a consultation and we’ll give you a warm welcome. We understand that your hair is one of your greatest beauty assests and will give you a bespoke look to suit lifestyle, using cutting edge techniques and exclusive organic brands. So let’s embrace the Summer trends with a fresh new look. Now, where did I put my flipflops?

“I love vibrant colours and working with pastels, melting colours together, gives a multi-dimensional look which gives amazing results,” she says. Hayley’s root stretch technique is popular with clients who want a low-maintenance, contemporary look with a stunning ombre effect. She also specialises in punchy highlights, a new trend which is set to prove popular for summer and makes a change from the more subtle balayage which has dominated recently.

Get the Party Started

Make Your Wedding Reception Amazing! The ceremony is over and you’re now officially man and wife, so what’s next? A sophisticated drinks reception or a jolly good knees-up? Whatever your idea of a good time, carefully planning your evening ‘do is a must so that you can make sure that your guests enjoy the wedding reception just as much as you.

Choose the Soundtrack

Music is essential for setting the tone at any gathering, so if you want to create a sophisticated and romantic atmosphere there’s nothing better than a string quartet – or even a harpist - playing late into the evening. Or if you fancy something a little more upbeat, but still like the idea of a live performer, then try a jazz band, rock and pop singer or a classical guitarist. If that’s not your thing though, why not opt for a DJ and get the party started with something more upbeat. If you’ve got to appeal to a wide range of age groups, then why not choose popular hits from the last five decades, to give everyone something that they can get up and dance to? You could even ask family and friends for their favourite tracks and compile a playlist. After the older – and younger – guests have left you can always change the tempo and put on something that’s more to your taste.

Excellent Entertainment

Just like with choosing the soundtrack, planning entertainment to suit all ages and tastes at your wedding really isn’t easy. Here are some ideas:

16

Magician

Everyone loves magic, whatever their age, so hiring a magician can be a great way to keep guests entertained. It also provides a good ice breaking opportunity for guests and gets them talking.

Caricaturist

Keeping to the ice-breaking theme, another way to get guests talking is with a caricaturist. There are sure to be lots of laughs and your guests can take their own memento of the event home with them when they leave.

Photo Booth

There’s no doubt that everyone will love a photo booth that’s complete with props and a dressing-up box. It’s a simple, easy and a really popular wedding entertainment idea.

Fireworks

Light up the sky with your own fabulous firework display. It’s romantic, exciting and sure to delight both old and young guests alike.

Casino

Keep guests busy by creating your very own casino. Games like roulette, black jack, dice and poker are sure to please.

Kids Entertainment

Keep the kids entertainment with a face painter, clown or balloon modeller if your budget permits. If not, simply set up a table especially for the kids that’s complete with colouring books, games and crafts.

Finding ‘The Dress’: Do’s & Don’ts

Finding ‘The Dress’: Do’s and Don’ts Ok, so you haven’t got the budget for a beautiful Givenchy wedding gown like Megan’s but that doesn’t mean that you can’t look just as amazing on your big day. Here’s our do’s and don’ts guide to shopping for your dream dress: Do try a couple of styles that you’d never usually go for. You’ve probably got an idea of the sort of style that you want but sometimes trying something completely different can have amazing results, or it can at least take you in a different style direction. Either way, it’s worth a try. Do think about your overall look when you’re trying on gowns. If you’re planning on a having a golden glow when your big day comes around, don’t try on dresses without a tan. Pale skin looks very different compared to bronzed skin when set against white, cream and ivory hues. It’s important to consider what your skin tone will be at the time of your nuptials for the most flattering finish. Do bring heels and accessories on every shopping trip. When you’re trying on any wedding gown make sure that you have a pair of heels to slip on because you won’t achieve the right look when you’re wearing flats. Heels not only add height but create a much more elegant look. Plus, even the most gorgeous dress in the world won’t look right if you’re wearing the wrong footwear. If you’ve already got a veil, tiara or piece of jewellery that you know that you want to wear, don’t forget that you’ll need to try it on with every dress that you’re considering. If you leave it to your imagination to see if it’ll match chances are you’ll be disappointed. Don’t try on too many gowns in one day. As soon as you start wedding dress shopping you’ll no doubt want to try on a dozen dresses as soon as you walk into the bridal boutique, but make sure that you limit the number of gowns that you try on in each visit; otherwise it gets very hard to remember the features you got likedan – oridea didn’toflike – about one. that you want but You’ve probably the sorteach of style Don’t rush into a purchase. sometimes trying something completely different can amazing When it comes to buying your wedding dress it’s easy to rush intohave making a purchase but it’s to hold back andin make sure that you’ve on plentyEither of different results, or definitely it can atbest least take you a different style tried direction. over a period of time – it’s amazing just how much your opinion can change way, designs it’s worth a try. from trip-to-trip. When it comes to buying your wedding dress it’s easy to rush into making a purchase but it’s definitely best to hold back and make sure that you’ve tried on plenty of different designs over a period of time – it’s amazing just how much your opinion can change from trip-to-trip. Don’t try on your dress with your hair down if you know that you’ll be wearing it up and vice versa. It may sound obvious, but it’s important to think about how you want to wear your hair on your big day because a dress can look very different when paired with an up-do compared to a long loose style. For example, a high-neck design complete with lots of embellishment won’t work well with flowing tresses, whereas it could gorgeous teamed with a polished up-do. All dresses shown are from Little Mistress Bridal Collection.

Capture the Magic of Your Big Day

Finding the Right Photographer

It’s an occasion that you’ll want to remember forever, so it’s essential to find a photographer who can capture the magic of your wedding day and provide you with a series of beautiful photographs that’ll keep your memories alive.

With so much planning to do leading up to your special day, it’s easy to overlook spending time finding the right photographer but it really is an element that shouldn’t be overlooked. A good photographer can capture the mood and feeling behind every moment of your celebration and present it in a way that brings those extra-special memories flooding back as soon as you open your wedding album. Here’s our guide to finding the right photographer for you:

Do Your Research

There are plenty of photographers out there that’ll be vying for your custom and in order to find the one that’ll deliver the results you want, it’s crucial to take a look at their previous wedding photography and see if their work matches what you’ve got in mind. If the shots are staged, formal and contrived, and you’re a fan of a much more relaxed and informal approach, then you know to try elsewhere.

Think About Your Theme

If you’re opting for a formal, vintage-inspired affair, then look for a photographer that can encapsulate the look you want using sepia, black and white and traditional photography styles. In contrast, if your celebration is a thoroughly modern and relaxed affair you’ll perhaps want a less planned and more spontaneous photography style to match, one that captures elements of the celebration that’d usually go unnoticed.

Making the Most of the Setting

You’ll need to ensure that your photographer can get to grips with your venue – and any challenges it presents – to really maximise photo opportunities for both you and your guests. For example, a countryside setting offers great potential for some scenic outdoor shots, away from the venue and crowds of guests. There’s nothing more romantic than an unplanned shot of the bride and groom walking hand in hand through an avenue of trees as the sun goes down. Helping your photographer to understand what appealed to you about your venue can also help them to capitalise on the setting. For example, if you’re getting married in a beautiful Georgian mansion and you fell in love with the elegance and grandeur of the building then make sure your snaps incorporate the features you love.

20

Personality Matters

It may sound strange but when it comes to photographers, personality really is important. You need to find someone who isn’t only skilled at taking beautiful pictures but who can also get the best of you and your guests. There’s often several group shots taken at any wedding and organising guests isn’t easy; a sense of humour and great people skills ensure the best photographs.

Essential Scents

IN YOU GARDEN they are grown in a far-flung border. Plant smaller perfumed plants in raised areas or perhaps in pots so that you can enjoy all they have to offer!

If

A garden without perfume is, well, like apple pie without the cream! However good your flower beds and borders may look, however well-clad with climbers your walls and fences are, if there are no wonderful scents and perfumes your garden will be missing a vital ingredient. That’s not to say you have to sacrifice the colour and texture when you use perfumed plants. Far from it – many heavily-scented flowers are also really good-looking. So what is perfume all about and how do you make the most of it? Perfume plays a role in plant evolution and their success; in many cases it is there to attract attention to the flower and to entice a suitable pollinator. Once lured over by the perfume, the insect can enjoy the nectar the flower offers and pollinate it in the process, so increasing the chances of it producing a new generation. There are a good number of plants which produce an alluring perfume during the evening or night-time. At this time of day there are not likely to be bees or butterflies about but there will be moths, especially during the summer months. Moths can be useful pollinators and although a plant like the sweetlyperfumed night-scented stock may not have flamboyant flowers, it will be successfully pollinated. For most of us, the stronger the perfume the better. But weather conditions can alter the level of perfume that reaches your nose. In a wind-swept spot the perfume can literally be blown away, and if temperatures are unusually low this too can cause scent levels to drop. So bear this in mind when choosing where to put your perfumed plants. Smaller or more subtly-scented plants grown for their perfume can pass unnoticed if sited too far away from where you can enjoy them. The classic examples are some of the polyanthus or the miniature iris, whose perfume will easily pass you by if

22

you’ve space for a small pergola, it has the potential to make a great home for some perfumed climbers, and what could be lovelier than to wander from one part of the garden to another via a tunnel of perfume? There are many perfumed roses which make great pergola plants and have flexible stems, such as the repeat flowering climbers ‘Ena Harkness’ (red) or ‘New Dawn’ (pale, dusky pink) or ‘Zephirine Drouhin’ (brightest pink).

Make sure that the air coming into your house via windows left ajar is delicately fragrant. Pop smaller perfumed plants such as ‘Nemesia Fragrant Cloud’ or lavenders into window boxes or wall baskets, and enjoy their wonderful perfume as it wafts into bedrooms, bathrooms and sitting rooms. If you enjoy sitting out on your patio or in your back yard after sundown then, as well as having daytime perfume, be sure to include some flowers that will be at their best in the evening. For a warm summer’s evening the small creamy-white flowers of night-scented stock take some beating, or if you want something a little showier then try the night-perfumed nicotianas or tobacco plants such as Nicotiana sylvestris. Make sure that patio pots and other containers have their fair share of perfumed plants – vibrant colours can be provided by most bedding plants, but try to include a few scented stunners as well. How about some hyacinths or one of my favourites, the Heliotrope or cherry pie, with its flowers in white or shades of purple and whose densely packed flower heads will produce perfume throughout the summer? Wall shrubs are a perfect way to disguise a less-than-attractive house or garage wall. For a sunny spot the blue-flowered Ceaonothus produces a distinctly honey-perfumed scent, or go more exotic and plant up a wall on a well-drained soil with the pineapple broom Cytissus batanderei – with its lovely silverycoloured foliage and bright yellow flowers it looks sensational, but once you sniff those pineapple-scented blooms you’ll be hooked. Create an arbour from a readily-available kit or from scratch if you’re handy with a saw, then clothe it in perfumed climbers such as sweetly-scented roses or, if the arbour is in a shadier spot, why not use the spicily-scented honeysuckle? You’ll be in heaven sitting on the arbour’s seat in the shade of the plants with their flowers’ scents all around! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and you’ll find some great gardening items: Nemaslug, green controls for leatherjackets, chafer grubs, ants and greenfly, plus garden plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! Another Daisy Local franchise managers, husband and wife team Steve and Barbara Davies have lived and worked in Telford for over 30 years and set up their companion driving service Driving Miss Daisy in January 2017. The service has proved invaluable to the local community and this year they have already added an additional car and driver to the team. Steve enthuses ‘After working for many years as a civil servant, I decided to leave those pressures behind and embrace a business that gives something back, by way of a mutual feelgood factor. I just knew that Driving Miss Daisy was exactly what my wife Barbara and I were looking for, as the brand embraces so many social issues, to include care in the community and companionship. Although the majority of our clients are elderly, we also transport children, people with limited mobility and passengers who simply cannot or don’t wish to drive anymore. We also frequently take pets to vets, quite often without the need for their owners to accompany us’. Driving Miss Daisy has been very well received by everyone that use the service and those that care for them and the main reasons for this is that their companion

drivers give clients back their independence in a reliable, safe and secure environment. The ethos behind the service is ‘We’re family when family can’t be there’ which is invaluable in the UK’s current overstretched climate. All the Daisy drivers are first-aid qualified, trained in moving and handling and are presently engaging in dementia awareness courses. Each Daisy car is adapted to accommodate wheelchairs and these specialist vehicles are adorned with the brand’s daisy symbol, with the drivers affectionately known as ‘Daisies’. With franchises ranging from the North of the UK, right down to the South coast, Driving Miss Daisy have gained numerous glowing testimonies to their trusted service. Sigiriya

There are no lions in Sri Lanka but when the first king arrived from India, his flag portrayed a lion symbolising hope and freedom. The Sri Lankan flag has endured ever since, except in colonial times when it was tucked away in England, in the Royal Chelsea Hospital. Today visitors come from far and wide to set eyes on Sigiriya, the Lion Rock rising in the central province, a sheer 200 metres above the plain. It’s a scenic landmark, hauntingly dramatic since patricide and usurper king Kasyapa built his palace on the very top in 477. Away from the capital, he designed this impregnable fortress to keep safe, should his half-brother, the rightful heir, return from exile. He did, in 495, and when Kasyapa foolishly came down to lead his army, the royal elephant suddenly changed direction. It was to avoid a bog, they say, but thinking this was a signal to retreat, the army deserted. Kasyapa killed himself on the spot. The palace was abandoned, Buddhist monks settled back in the caves and all was forgotten until the 19th century when the British scaled the rock and discovered the ruins. Sigiriya is now a world heritage site and whatever the crowds, the mighty copper-coloured rock takes your breath away, rugged and scarred, inaccessible, it seems, yet you can see patches of grass and lonely trees sprouting from the top. At the base of the rock, a gentle stroll takes you past the

26

THE LION ROCK IN SRI LANKA

remains of outer and inner ramparts, the moats and water gardens, until you reach the natural archway marking the start of the steep stone steps. Then it’s a climb to the fresco cave – branching up a near vertical spiral staircase – where sensuous bejewelled maidens have beckoned for over 1,500 years. With slender waists and generous bosoms, the ladies of the court appear almost unreal in soft golden colours. Over the centuries, myriad pilgrims and artists have fallen in love with these Cloud Maidens and recorded their impressions on the nearby Mirror Wall. Roughly half-way up, the open Lion Terrace is a great place to rest, enjoy the view and gaze at what was once the Lion Staircase House, the last and only gateway to the palace on the top. The lion lost its head long ago but the massive paws carved into the rock beckon the fittest up the last dizzying stairway. The summit takes everyone by surprise, a plateau stretching 1.5 hectares, glowing with red terraces and ancient walls. This is the highest point and innermost precinct of the whole complex, where a royal garden and outer and inner palaces converged on a rock-cut pool. There are very few ruins up there but no one seems to mind, for spellbinding vistas lead you from the plain and formal gardens far below to the wooded slopes, the terraced gardens and the boulder gardens where the dramatic ‘Cobra Hood Cave’ preserves fragments of ancient paintings. Mountains rise in the distance, but on this lofty perch you feel on top of the world.

Restaurant Review

FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE

The Falcon Hotel, Restaurant & Bar St Johns Street, Bridgnorth WV15 6AG

T: 01746 763134

The Falcon Hotel, Restaurant & Bar is a historic grade II listed building situated in the lovely picturesque market town of Bridgnorth. The Falcon has recently undergone a major refurb and has been transformed since we last visited a few years ago. Although it now looks very chic, with a great use of natural colours throughout the restaurant and bar, they have retained many of the great character features including beamed ceilings and panelled walls. It has a very light and airy feel and has been finished to a very high standard. The new coat of paint on the outside of the building certainly makes it stand out. The car park can be accessed from Severn Street or you can drive through the archway at the front of the hotel to the car park at the rear. We had visited on a Friday evening so had the choice of ordering from the main menu or the new Fish & Fizz menu. The fish menu had a choice of starters and main courses and the fizz menu had a range of cocktails and gins to choose from. While we browsed through the menus we both ordered a French 75 (£5.50) from the Fizz Menu - which is a glass of Prosecco with lemon and Gin - I think I have found my new favourite drink - it was amazing! For starters Nik chose from the fish menu and ordered the Crab Roulade with soused mackerel, Serrano ham, chilli, cucumber, spring onion and coriander (£7.50). I ordered off the main menu and opted for the Goats Cheese Mousse with pistachio crumb, goats cheese honeycomb, pickled fennel and beetroot crisp (6.95). Nik’s crab roulade was filled with a light and creamy mousse, perfect with the slight saltiness from the Serrano ham. A soused mackerel fillet with a hint of a pickle flavour, which was superb with the shards of spring onion and delicate balls of cucumber. My goats cheese mousse was deliciously creamy and soft with a tasty

28

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT pistachio crumb around the outside, the goats cheese honeycomb had a slight chewiness to it and the pickled fennel was lovely, the beetroot crisp I saved till last which was a great end to my starter.

Nik’s crumble was sweet but had a nice sour kick from the rhubarb, the fool was a lovely light mousse with a delicate hint of rhubarb flavour, the semifreddo was a firmer mousse with a sharper taste of rhubarb. Overall this dish offered a range of depth of rhubarb flavour but served in a variety of textures – amazing!

For mains, Nik stayed with the fish menu and had the Lobster Thermidor with triple cooked chips, onion rings, watercress and pea shoot salad (£24.95). I also chose from the fish menu and had the Curry Buttered Cod with Amritsar salmon fishcakes, kachumber, mustard pea purée and tandoori potatoes (£16.95).

My trifle was served in clear glass so that you could see all the layers with a light soft sponge at the bottom, strawberry gel, strawberry mousse and topped with cream and toasted almonds – a great finish to a fabulous meal.

My cod was coated in a delicious curry sauce; the tandoori potatoes were well seasoned with spices and full of flavour. The kachumber was a mix of tomatoes, peppers, spring onions, red onion and coriander which gave the dish a lovely freshness; the pea purée was creamy and soft. The fishcakes looked like small scotch eggs with a lovely crispy shell and were amazing. A very tasty dish, full of a great mix of flavours that all worked well together - I would definitely order this dish again and would highly recommend it! Nik said his lobster thermidor was a real treat, the meat was perfect, white, meaty and extremely tasty. Served with some splendid onion rings and some golden, uniformly cut chunky chips, perfect for mopping up the deliciously rich thermidor sauce. The salad added a nice freshness to the dish. For dessert Nik selected the Trio of Rhubarb - rhubarb crumble, rhubarb fool, rhubarb semifreddo (£6.95). I was tempted by a good old classic the Sherry Trifle (£5.95).

Sunday roasts are available between 12-6pm but the main menu is also available between 12-8pm on Sundays. A special 2 course lunch at £10 is available Monday to Friday. Afternoon Tea is popular at The Falcon and is available between 3-5pm Monday to Friday, please to call to book in advance. Afternoon Tea can also be arranged at weekends for special occasions. If you fancy making a night of it, you can book a room at the hotel from just £70 for a double – please check with the hotel for their latest offers as dining/room packages are often available. Not all the rooms have been refurbished yet, but they will all hopefully be completed by the end of the year. Bookings are now being taken for Christmas and New Year – see the website for full details. We were very impressed with our visit to The Falcon and the transformation of the building is amazing. The quality of the food was exceptional and overall it was a great evening – definitely a venue we will be returning to!

Recipe

BERRY AND CHOCOLATE PAVLOVAS These divine individual pavlovas are ideal for a summer dessert. You can make the meringues in advance then layer with fruit and cream a couple of hours before serving. Makes 4 Ready in 2 hours

INGREDIENTS: • 4 large egg whites • 225g caster sugar • 1 tsp cornflour • 1tsp white wine vinegar • 1 tsp vanilla extract • 500g fresh strawberries • 200g fresh raspberries • 25g icing sugar, sifted, plus extra to serve • 2 tsp lemon juice • 300ml double cream, softly whipped • 200g Greek yoghurt • Chocolate curls, to decorate

1. Preheat the oven to 150°C, fan 130C, Gas Mark 1. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Draw six 9 cm circles on each sheet of baking paper. Turn the paper over. 2. Using an electric food mixer whisk the egg whites in a clean grease-free bowl until stiff. Gradually whisk in the sugar, one tablespoon at a time, whisking well after each addition to make a firm and glossy meringue. 3. Blend the cornflour, vinegar and vanilla extract together in a small bowl and fold into the meringue. Divide the meringue between the marked circles. 4. Bake for 45 minutes - 1 hour until the meringues are crisp and dry on the outside. Turn the oven off and leave them to cool completely in the oven with the door slightly open. 5. Hull and chop most of the strawberries (reserving about 8 for decoration). Place in a food processor or blender with half the raspberries and pulse to make a thick puree. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the icing sugar and lemon juice. Fold the yogurt into the cream. 6. Carefully remove the meringues from the baking paper. Sandwich the meringues together in stacks of three with cream and the fruit puree. Top with the reserved strawberries and remaining raspberries and decorate with chocolate curls. Dust with icing sugar just before serving.

TIP The unfilled meringues will keep in a an airtight container for 3-4 days.

Bringing a Pet

Pets can bring a lot of fun, laughter and comfort to a child’s life. Elizabeth Kilbey, from Channel 4’s Secret Life of 4 Year Olds, says: “Research from BMC Psychiatry has revealed that interacting or simply being in the presence of animals has a soothing effect on children, reducing their heart rate and skin temperature. Spending time with furry friends, and stroking, cuddling and caring for them, can release comforting endorphins.” All animals need care and attention, but some require more than others. Birds, for instance, need to have their cages cleaned out once a week and their food and water changed daily. Dogs need at least one walk a day (often more) and most don’t like to be left alone for more than four hours at a time. The age of your children will play a big part in choosing the right pet for your family. A big, boisterous puppy could easily knock a toddler over, for example, and won’t take kindly to having its tail pulled, and some breeds of hamster are too small and fast for young children to handle. You’ll need to factor in the cost of food, any regular medications, pet insurance, potential vet’s bills and accessories such as cat litter and toys. Depending on your circumstances and the type of animal you choose, there may also be other costs involved, such as paid dog-walking services or cattery costs. Once you’ve decided what type of animal you want, you’ll need to find the pet that’s right for you. Rescue centres are a good first port of call, as they should be able to tell you what age

36

INTO YOUR FAMILY

group a pet can live with, whether it’s house-trained, how long it can be left alone for, and so on. If you’re planning to buy a puppy, it’s sensible to choose a breeder that’s registered with the Kennel Club, as they have to adhere to strict ethical and health criteria. Less reputable breeders don’t always provide the level of healthcare they should, which means you could end up with large vet’s bills in the future. If you’re not able to care for a pet full-time, you could look at ‘borrowing’ one for walks and play. It’s worth asking around to see if any of your neighbours need some extra help. Or check out The Cinnamon Trust (www.cinnamon.org.uk), which puts volunteer dog walkers in touch with pet owners who need support. There’s also Borrow My Doggy (www.borrowmydoggy. com), which connects dog walkers and pet sitters with pet owners. Lots of animal rescues also need people to foster pets long or short term.

Find out more www.pdsa.org.uk has an easy guide to choosing the right animal for your circumstances, and advice on a range of pets, from chickens to horses. www.rspca.org.uk has advice on everything from settling a new pet into a home to coping with any behaviour issues. www.dogstrust.org.uk has lots of downloadable factsheets, including a leaflet that helps parents to keep their children safe around dogs. www.thekennelclub.org.uk has advice about choosing a puppy and a list of all registered breeders.

Home Boarding • Dog Walking • Pet Sitting • Puppy Care

My Best Friend provides a caring, convenient and professional service to your best friend. We offer, home boarding, dog walking, pet sitting and puppy care plus pet transportation services and take pride in treating your dog as if they were our own. My Best Friend, North Shropshire is owned and operated by Karen Horton and is based in Muxton, North of Telford. Growing up near Cannock Chase in Staffordshire, I always enjoyed long walks in the woods with my family and our dogs and over the years, I volunteered for pet sitting for friends, family and colleagues, looking after a variety of dogs from Shih Tzu’s to Dobermans, socialising energetic puppies to become confident and outgoing dogs. I now have my own dog, Milo, a very friendly Shih Tzu, and we are both are looking forward to welcoming you and your own best friends soon, where you know that they will be entrusted to the care of someone who will treat them as part of the family in a home away from home. I am also looking for people to host dogs in their own home while their owners can’t. It might be for a day, a couple of nights or even a fortnight. If you love dogs and you’re at home for most of the day you could be just the person we’re looking for and would love to hear from you.

PETS:

Swimming is a fun activity for your dog, and one which can be extremely beneficial for their overall health. In the heat of summer, however, it comes into its own by cooling them down and helping them to avoid the risk of heat stroke to which dogs are prone. So what should you do to make sure they’re safe in the water, and that swimming is fun rather than frightening? • Stay in the shallows at first Letting your dog play in shallow waters helps them to acclimatise and gain confidence if they’re relatively new to swimming.

KEEPING YOUR DOG SAFE IN THE WATER THIS SUMMER • Don’t let them get too tired Swimming is tiring for your dog, so watch out for signs that they’re flagging. They may start to panic and flounder in the water, especially if they’re novice swimmers. It’s possible to buy life jackets for dogs, which give them confidence in the water if they’re a little unsure. www.passpawt.com/safety-tips-for-swimming-with-your-dog/ www.petfinder.com/dogs/living-with-your-dog/summer-time-funon-the-water-keep-your-dogs-safe/ www.vetstreet.com/dr-marty-becker/keep-your-dog-safe-in-thewater-this-summer

• Be aware of undercurrents It’s easy for your dog to be swept out further than you’d like if there are tidal undercurrents on your stretch of beach. Fast-flowing rivers and streams also pose a danger in this respect, even if your dog’s a strong swimmer. • Provide fresh water to drink Drinking lake or river water can result in an upset stomach due to the bacteria and parasites that are often present, so it’s a good idea to take some fresh drinking water with you.

Ratings: Google Play 4.6/5; iTunes 4.7/5; Amazon 3.7/5 Using an app to improve your health and fitness may seem counter-intuitive, with the media issuing dire warnings about the effects of too much screen time: prolonged sitting and diabetes, diminishing social interaction, eye strain... However, used correctly, technology can motivate and educate us to eat more healthily, exercise and socialise, sharing our efforts with others. So why not give one of these apps a try?

Anterior Knee Pain Anterior knee pain is a term used to describe pain at the front of the knee. It is an umbrella term and covers several conditions for example Chondromalacia patella (wear and tear or softening or the retro patella surface), Inflammation of the patella tendon/fat pad and surrounding structures often referred to as Jumpers Knee.

of tapping techniques. If there is significant pain again tapping can be useful as well as electrotherapy treatment and the possibility of acupuncture may be considered. It maybe that strength work on your foot posture will be required and even an orthotic to correct foot posture is often considered. In all, most anterior knee pains are very treatable and so if any of the above sounds familiar then here at SB Sports Injury & Physiotherapy Clinic Ltd we have the staff to assess and successfully treat the condition.

The cause of anterior knee pain can be multifactorial due to the wide and varied structures that could cause the pain and so it is relatively poorly defined. Often underlying factors such as overuse, Muscle imbalance, weakness and patella abnormalities or even varied foot postures can lead to symptoms. Patients can present with a variety of symptoms due to the varied source of the problem but characteristically patients with anterior knee pain often demonstrate functional pain problems on walking, squatting, descending stairs and sitting for prolonged periods with the knee’s bent. On occasions it can present as joint instability and with giving way of the knee. The assessment and diagnosis of anterior pain is tricky and so a detailed knowledge of the anatomy as well as experience in treating the condition is essential. Once a diagnosis has been determined the treatment again can be challenging often rest from activity is required while your physiotherapist goes on to advise on exercise therapy to correct any weakness/ muscle imbalances. Your physio may use techniques to help with patella alignment or position such as strength exercises

How Safe

Books and magazines often advise us how to ‘tan safely’ and describe people as looking ‘healthy and tanned’, inextricably linking these two words in our minds. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. As the NHS baldly states, “There’s no safe or healthy way to get a tan.” If you’re not convinced, let’s look at why your skin tans.

The Problem with Suntans

However light it is, however slowly you built it up, and whether you got it lying in your back garden, a Mediterranean beach or a sunbed, a tan proves that your skin has been exposed to too much radiation. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, around 5% of the UV (ultraviolet) radiation it receives is UVB, responsible for sunburn. The other 95% is UVA, responsible for tanning, aging, wrinkling and coarsening the skin. UVA rays penetrate to the lower layers of the epidermis, stimulating cells called melanocytes to produce melanin, the brown pigment that gives your skin its tanned appearance. This is the skin’s defence mechanism. Your skin has good reason to go into defence mode. Prolonged exposure to UV rays increases your risk of developing malignant melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, and non-melanoma skin cancer too.

The Problem with Sunbeds

IS YOUR SUNTAN? (erythema means reddening of the skin caused by sunburn). That’s equivalent to exposure to the tropical sun, which the World Health Organization (WHO) describes as extreme. So, it’s not surprising that sunbeds can cause more damage than exposure to sunlight. Your risk depends on your skin type, including the presence of moles, and the frequency and length of your sunbed sessions. Age is a factor too and, in the UK, it’s illegal for people under the age of 18 to use sunbeds. “Sunbed use and overexposure to the sun can be a risk to the skin at any age,” say The British Association of Dermatologists. “However, a review by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found that first exposure to sunbeds before the age of 35 years increases the risk of melanoma by 75 per cent.” Unfortunately, the symptoms of skin damage can take up to 20 years to appear, so it can be easy to fool yourself that you’ve done no harm. But research shows that people who are frequently exposed to UV rays before the age of 25 or who experience sunburn in childhood have a greatly increased risk of developing skin cancer later in life.

Guidelines for using Tanning Equipment

A sunbed operator should discuss your skin type with you before you use a sunbed and advise you on the limit of your session length. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recommends you shouldn’t use UV tanning equipment if you: • have fair, sensitive skin that burns easily or tans slowly or poorly

The World Health Organization classifies sunbeds as a ‘Group 1 Carcinogen’ – something scientifically proven to cause cancer in humans. Sunbeds, sunlamps and tanning booths emit the same harmful UV radiation as the sun, so they increase your risk of developing both malignant melanoma and no-melanoma skin cancers too.

• have a history of sunburn, particularly in childhood, or badly sun-damaged skin

But tanning devices are potentially more dangerous than sun exposure. Many sunbeds give out greater doses of UV rays than the midday tropical sun, and you’re relying on manufacturers and operators to ensure you get a ‘safe’ dose of UV.

• have a medical condition aggravated by sunlight, such as vitiligo

In 2006, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Products stated the maximum ultraviolet radiation from sunbeds shouldn’t exceed 0.3W/m2, or 11 standard erythema doses per hour

• have lots of freckles and red hair • have lots of moles • are taking medicines or using creams that make your skin sensitive to sunlight

• have a personal or family history of skin cancer You should also be especially cautious if you’re pregnant. Pregnancy can make your skin more sensitive and prone to burning and pigmentation (patches of dark skin). Some studies have suggested there may be a link between increased UV rays and folic acid deficiency, as UV rays can break down folic acid. Folic acid is vital for the development of the baby’s neural system (brain and spinal cord).

Stay Safe in the Sun

Avoid the sun when it’s strongest (between 11am and 3pm, March to October, in the UK). Never allow yourself to burn. Cover your skin and don’t forget a hat and sunglasses. If you’re not wearing sunglasses or wearing sunglasses without adequate UVA and UVB protection, then your eyes can suffer damage too, resulting in conjunctivitis, irritation or even cataracts. Remember that sunscreen only reduces UV exposure; it doesn’t eliminate it. Use sunscreen that’s in date, with at least four-star UVA protection and an SPF of at least 15 (30 or higher if you’re fair-skinned or using it on children).

Should You Buy an Automatic Car?

PROS AND CONS EXPLAINED

Traditionally, British motorists have favoured manual gearboxes, but automatics are becoming increasingly popular. If you’re thinking of buying an auto, Tom Wiltshire explains everything you need to know.

When buying a car, you have lots of choices to make – colour, trim level, optional equipment, engine, and on many models, you’re also given a choice of gearbox. Manuals have long been the default option for UK motorists, but automatics are ten a penny in other markets such as America. Though early autos were colloquially known as ‘slush boxes’ and tended to dent performance, fuel economy and driving pleasure, times have moved on, and the modern automatic can, in some cases, be a better choice than the manual gearbox. Automatics abound across all market segments these days, and opting for one says no more about your driving style than choosing blue paint over red. Fans of performance automatics will brag all day about how their car can actually beat the manuals off the line, while the cash-conscious may enjoy lower CO2 emissions and higher fuel economy. There’s no denying that a good automatic transmission makes for a relaxing drive, either – giving your left leg a rest and letting the car do the work takes the sting out of a busy city commute. However, there are still some truly awful automatic gearboxes out there – so always take a car for an extensive test drive, rather than simply trusting that the transmission is good. Automatics tend to be more expensive to buy, and much more expensive to repair if they go wrong. But not every automatic is created equal. Here’s our guide to the different types of automatic gearbox available today.

Torque converter/traditional auto

Popularised by General Motors on 1940s Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs, these automatics use a fluid-filled coupling in place of a traditional clutch, and remain broadly the same – albeit endlessly refined and improved. Early automatics tended to lose a lot of energy through the fluid coupling, and often only offered three or four speeds. That led to a lack of performance and a severe drop in fuel economy. Torque converter automatics tend to offer very smooth shifts, making for a comfortable ride well-suited to premium cars. They can be slow to pick up when you want to get a move on, though. Nowadays, however, modern units – such as the ZF ‘box fitted to dozens of high performance cars – offer no discernible penalty to performance or economy.

Dual-clutch gearbox

The dual-clutch gearbox ditches the fluid coupling of the torque converter for a pair of robotised clutches. Usually, one handles odd-numbered gears while the other handles even. The two clutches work together to provide lightning-fast shifts, making them ideal for sports cars. There’s no real penalty in performance or economy when opting for a dual-clutch – some can even better their manual counterparts on that front. But at low speeds in stop-start traffic around town, dual-clutch boxes can be jerky and unpleasant to use – and early units have a poor reputation for reliability, and

46

can cost a lot to repair. The dual-clutch ‘box is given many names by different manufacturers. Volkswagen and its sister brands go for DSG, Porsche for PDK, Renault goes for EDC, Hyundai and Kia for DCT. However, they all work in fundamentally the same way.

CVT

Standing for ‘continuously variable transmission’, CVTs do not have ‘gears’ in the same way as other transmissions do. Instead, an infinitely changeable single ratio theoretically ensures that the car is always correctly geared for maximum power or economy, depending on conditions. Pioneered by DAF in the 1950s, and later refined by Volvo, the CVT ‘box can be incredibly economical when driven carefully. They tend to be avoided by keen drivers, though, as they can provide a somewhat disconnected feel to the car – and any attempt at rapid progress is usually met by spiralling engine revs and a whole lot of noise. Their smoothness and variable nature makes them ideally suited for use in a hybrid car.

Automated manual transmission

At the bottom end of the market you’ll often find a few automated manual transmissions. These gearboxes leave existing clutch and gearbox operations in place but simply robotise the action, making for cheap and easy installation as well as being lightweight. Automated manuals are perhaps the most despised transmission around, and can be horrifically jerky around town, as well as dawdling under hard acceleration. In fact, automated manual transmissions are guilty of ruining a fair few cars – so steer clear unless you know what you’re in for.

Electric vehicle

Electric cars don’t technically have a transmission, but if you’re considering an automatic car you should take a good look at electric vehicles. They act almost identically in most conditions, with two pedals and no gears to shift, but have the added bonus of a totally smooth and silent powertrain and zero tailpipe emissions. EV’s aren’t ideal for everyone, of course – you’ll need somewhere to charge, and if you regularly do longer trips you’ll definitely need some form of combustion engine. However, if your circumstances suit, you could be a convert to the electric lifestyle.

Summer Fun

Want to make your pennies stretch a bit further this summer? Keep reading… Free local events Install the Eventbrite app on your phone (or check the website www.eventbrite.co.uk) for family-friendly events near you, from food and drink festivals to pop-up art exhibitions. Most are free and tickets can be booked using the app. If you can bear to brave the crowds, shopping malls often have free family activities on over the summer, including kids’ entertainers and competitions. Gone are the days when libraries were silent places reserved for studying. Now they regularly play host to all manner of familyfriendly events, including treasure hunts and storytelling. Many events are free, while others incur a small charge. Sign up to your local library’s social media pages or newsletter to be the first to hear what’s coming up.

ON A BUDGET

My Box Office (www.myboxoffice.biz) also runs a similar scheme for an annual fee of £15, which gets you discounted tickets to a range of shows across the UK. Again, tickets are usually offered last minute, and there are only ever a limited number available, so you need to be quick! TV companies offer free audience tickets for many of their programmes, from Dancing on Ice to The Voice. Most of them can be requested through www.sroaudiences.com. There don’t tend to be many children’s programmes, but the website is well worth a look if you have older children.

Discount vouchers Wowcher, Groupon and other voucher sites do have some great deals, but they usually involve signing up to a daily alert. Bownty (www.bownty.co.uk) gathers all the offers together in one place, and you don’t have to sign up for newsletters. You can search by location and activity, and when we checked there were cut-price deals on soft play and kids craft sessions.

Several of the larger cinema chains offer cut-price kids clubs. Vue and Odeon’s kids clubs, for example, are at 10am on Saturday and Sundays at most cinemas, and every morning during the summer, with tickets priced from £2.50. The offer is usually only valid for one particular film.

Kids Pass gives you discounts for a wide range of activities and venues, including cinemas, aquariums, zoos and more. You also get free kids’ meals (with a paying adult) at restaurants such as Giraffe, Prezzo and Bella Italia. The card usually costs £39.99 for a year but there are often offers available, including £1 for a 30 day trial (you’ll need to make sure you cancel within the trial period). The website is www.kidspass.co.uk, but search online for special offers before buying.

Heading to London? The Audience Club offers free tickets to a host of live shows. Membership costs £5 and there’s a £3 (plus VAT) admin charge for each ticket, meaning you could easily save £100 per show. Most tickets are offered last minute and you can only get two per member. See www.theaudienceclub. com.

National shortfall of homes rising?

A look at the Telford property scene with James Carlon

“How’s the housing market in Telford doing at the moment?” It’s a question I get asked fairly regularly, and while I love talking about property, my answer has been pretty samey in recent years because one theme has dominated - the lack of new homes coming onto the market. Some startling figures have been released by the National Housing Federation and homeless charity Crisis, which show there is an estimated 3.91 million shortfall in homes across England. Clearly this will vary wildly across regions, but it’s certainly a sobering statistic nonetheless. The research also says 340,000 new homes need to be built across England every year until 2031 to meet future demand - compared to the current Government target of 250,000 a year.

Property investment still a good bet? New figures suggest that the average landlord could see a net profit of £162,000 per property over the next 25 years. The figures have been compiled by specialist lender Kent Reliance, part of OneSavings Bank, and will, of course, vary significantly across different areas of the country, but the overall message is clear - property investment is still good business. According to the research, a basic tax paying landlord who has placed a 30% deposit of just under £74,000 on a property, would earn an overall profit of £162,000 over 25 years after all costs and taxes, accounting for inflation. A lot of the profit is naturally tied up in the property itself in the form of capital gains, but income from rent alone 52

There are, of course, debates about the effect building new homes will have on the housing market, and the affordability of any new homes is a key factor as well. But it is clear from our experience across Shropshire that the demand for property is out there, so our message to anyone considering putting their house on the market is clear - buyers are ready and waiting, so now is a great time to get moving! would also generate a profit in the region of £65,000. From our point of view, the rental sector in Telford and across Shropshire is still performing strongly, and most importantly the demand for rental property is still very high. So these figures confirm our view that long-term property investment will always be a good bet. For more advice about lettings and property investment, give me a call on 01952 292300. Have you heard of the Waitrose Effect? Lucy Blythe of Nock Deighton in Newport, takes a look at current market trends...

Some interesting research has just been published which will be music to the ears of many property owners in Newport - living near a supermarket typically adds around £21,500 to the value of your home. Waitrose and Marks & Spencer attract the biggest premium, but the budget supermarkets are also helping to raise prices, according to the analysis from Lloyds Bank. But overall, homes in areas with a Waitrose, Marks & Spencer or Sainsbury’s are most likely to command a higher house price premium when compared to the wider town average.

“On average homes near a Waitrose cost an average of £43,571 or 12% more than average house prices in the wider town where the brand is located.” Next is Marks & Spencer with a premium of £40,135 and Sainsbury’s at £32,707 while homes within easy reach of all three supermarket chains are trading at an average premium of 12%. 54

Smaller local stores like a Little Waitrose, Sainsbury’s Local or Tesco Extra attract a higher average premium of £58,109 compared with a larger superstore at 11%, or £30,580. But it’s homes near to budget supermarkets which were found to have seen the biggest house price rise. Properties near to Lidl, Aldi, Morrisons and Asda have increased 15% or £29,316 over the past four years, a faster increase than for all supermarkets at 10%. Of course, statistics like this are always worth considering in their context as there are a lot of differing factors which determine the value of a property. But with Newport being one of the few towns in the area boasting a Waitrose, we felt this research was certainly worth sharing! Shropshire Estate Agent

A Shropshire estate agent had an early morning wake-up call in the shape of a Range Rover Velar after scooping a top prize with dream car giveaway company BOTB. Adam Williams from Newport was left lost for words when BOTB turned up unexpectedly at his Shropshire home to carry out their trademark surprise. The 38-year-old was still wearing his pyjamas when BOTB’s Christian Williams handed over the keys to the gleaming Velar worth £73,000. Adam, who has only played BOTB a handful of times, was getting ready for a day at the beach on his day off when the surprise was sprung. “I’m honestly lost for words. The Velar is my absolute dream car. I’ve always said if I won the lottery this is the car I’d buy!” said Adam. BOTB was founded by William Hindmarch in 1999 and has handed over the keys to more than £22m worth of supercars. Listed on the stock market, BOTB has

Adam, whose wife Melissa helped set the surprise up, said: “When I first heard the doorbell ring I thought it must be a parcel delivery but as soon as I saw Christian’s BOTB gilet through the door I couldn’t believe it.” “I first saw the Velar on Top Gear and fell in love with it but I honestly didn’t think I’d get the chance to own one. “I didn’t sleep very well last night and I’m wondering if I’m still asleep,” laughed Adam, “this is an absolute dream come true.” Christian, who delivered the good news, said it had been one of the earliest surprises he had been involved with. “We knew we had to try and catch Adam before he headed for a day at the coast. Normally no-one likes an early start, but seeing Adam’s face made the morning alarm call more than worthwhile,” he said. “I have one of the best jobs in the world – even at that time of day!” Head over to www.botb.com, where you can see Adam’s reaction to the win, as well as a host of past winners.

Out and About Whether it’s a long walk or an epic adventure, technology can make travelling much easier. It’s amazing how much can be crammed into a small space: for example the Clippa Lady Mini Multi-Tool Hair Clip (£8) combines a bottle opener, scraper, ruler, small screwdriver and a nail file in a simple pink hair clip. If you fancy something that’s more practical than pretty, the evergreen Leatherman multi-tool and its many imitators crams an astonishing number of tools into something barely larger than a pair of pliers, and while you can’t generally fly with them in your carry-on luggage – many multi-tools have various cutting bits that make them potential weapons – they’re very useful things to pack, or to have on a hike or in a caravan. It pays to shop around, though: the top Leatherman models can be ruinously expensive but they’re often heavily discounted, so for example the £149.95 Wave is currently available from several retailers for nearer £100. Much cheaper options are available too. Wearable technology is becoming a big deal in the great outdoors too. Apple’s Series 3 Apple Watch has built-in GPS and is available with its own 4G data connection, albeit only on EE, which enables you to track your route and get directions without having to take your phone out or even bring it with you. And there are now tons of focused GPS watches for sports and for hiking, such as TomTom’s Adventurer GPS watch (£199) or if you’re feeling really flush, Garmin’s Fenix 5 Multisports (£439). Where Apple’s device is a smartwatch that can do GPS, rival devices were designed with GPS as their main priority and are often better bets for serious sports people. TomTom and Garmin are the big names in this market but there are plenty of cheaper options from less established firms too. If you’ll be travelling for a while and think your phone battery won’t last, there are several options for topping up its charge. Some phones enable you to swap the batteries (although the most expensive phones, such as iPhones and the latest Android flagships, don’t), but most big name devices can accept power pack cases that combine a protective case and extra battery in one item. That means much more life between charges, but it does add quite a lot of bulk and weight. Expect to pay around £60 for an established brand such as Mophie’s Juice Pack for the iPhone, and steer clear of no-name products on eBay – dodgy batteries can go on fire with horrific consequences, so it’s wise to stick to recognised brands from reputable sellers. Another option is a portable charger. Solar ones aren’t much cop in the UK except on the sunniest days, but pre-charged devices such as Aukey’s excellent Power Bank can be used to charge tablets, phones, handheld games consoles and other small items such as Kindles. Again, they’re often discounted and £20 is the sweet spot for a decent one. You can expect to get more than four full charges for a smartphone or one and a half for a big tablet.

• Bring the outside in by including gorgeous natural elements. Driftwood is perfect, as are shells and coral (ethical, of course). Add some rope, wicker and maybe seagrass, coir or jute for a lovely contrast of textures. • It’s all about the light. Coastal homes are airy and breezy, so maximise light at the windows by hanging filmy curtains or white-painted wooden blinds, and arrange artificial lighting so that a central pendant is supplemented by a versatile selection of wall, table and floor lamps. • Choose fabrics for their crisp or floaty feel. Simplicity is key, so opt for linen, muslin and ticking, either plain or with a stripe. Bold stripes are more nautical, while barely-there stripes are more utilitarian – either way, the look is completely charming.

The Roaming Empire

HOW TO ACCESS THE INTERNET WHEN YOU'RE ON HOLIDAY

Internet access can be really useful when you’re travelling. Map apps can help you find your way around and others can help you get better deals on tourist attractions, discover the best places to eat and drink or avoid the worst tourist traps. But how do you actually get online without spending a fortune? The cheapest way to get online is via free Wi-Fi, which is available in all kinds of places – not just the familiar cafes and transport hubs but in malls, on public transport and anywhere else tourists are likely to go. Be wary, though, especially if you’re using your device for something private such as online banking. It’s very easy to set up a convincinglooking Wi-Fi hotspot and then intercept the data people send, such as their online banking IDs. If in doubt use a security program called a Virtual Private Network (VPN) –Tunnelbear is one example – which establishes a secure, eyes-only tunnel between you and the site you’re visiting. Another option is to use your mobile phone to create a WiFi hotspot. This enables other devices to connect to your phone and use its data connection. It’s very easy to do (the relevant option will be in your phone’s settings menu) but be careful if you have a monthly data transfer limit: using multiple devices can quickly take you beyond your monthly cap. If your phone doesn’t have this feature you can buy a “dongle” or a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot; the former plugs into your laptop’s USB port to give it mobile data access and the latter is a portable device that creates a Wi-Fi hotspot your other devices can use.

1

2

3

You should be particularly careful about using mobile data if you’re outside the UK and EU. Charges for mobile data abroad can be terrifying, so we’d strongly recommend buying a mobile data add-on that gives you a fixed amount of data for a fixed price. You can usually get more than enough mobile data for your daily needs for just a few pounds per day. Make sure your contract doesn’t already include roaming, though. For example, our Vodafone contract includes free roaming in 48 different countries. It doesn’t include North or South America, Africa or Asia but it covers Europe and several groups of islands. For the time being, you won’t be charged extra for using your mobile or tablet in the European Union as roaming charges within the EU were scrapped in 2017. However, when the UK leaves Europe under Brexit, operators will no longer be compelled to let their customers roam for free. It’s possible that they may decide to stick to the current arrangement, but we’re not very optimistic. Whatever you do, be careful what you’re doing. Streaming Netflix or iPlayer programmes is best kept to Wi-Fi, as the downloads can be huge, and beware apps that do things in the background when you’re not actually using your phone. We find it’s best to keep our phones off or in aeroplane mode when we’re not actually using them.

Transferring Your Pensions Before you consider transferring your pensions you should make sure it is the right decision for you. This means assessing your current lifestyle and monitoring your outgoings so that you will still be able to afford the lifestyle once you retire. What is a pension transfer? This is the process of transferring a final salary pension for a cash value. This cash value is then invested into a defined contribution type scheme allowing you to access the potential benefits of the pension freedoms which came into effect in April 2015.

Why might you transfer your pensions? There are many reasons to transfer your pension and these will be specific to you and incorporate your attitude to risk. One reason could be that you have come across a scheme which offers a better value for your savings, or that your current fund is closing and you have no choice but to transfer out.

What are the benefits of a pension transfer? By transferring you give yourself more control over your pot and how you spend your money. There are also tax advantages and most importantly there is the ability to pass on whatever pension fund remains to beneficiaries should you die.

Make sure you consider the risks Transferring out of a final salary scheme is unlikely to be in the interests of most people because it risks them being worse off in retirement. They will give up the guaranteed income for life, and accept that the value of their pension and the income it can produce may fall as well as rise, and they could get back less then they transferred.

Meditation

MARVELLOUS MEDICINE OR NEW AGE FAD?

“I always say I haven’t slept since 1993,” declared 67-year-old actor Sherrie Hewson on the reality TV programme, 100 Years Younger in 21 Days, which aired earlier this year. Sherrie was taking part in an experiment conducted for ITV television by Professor Ian Philp, an expert who advises the World Health Organisation on agerelated health matters. When her sleep patterns were analysed, the data confirmed that she woke at regular intervals throughout the night. Although Sherrie’s participation in the TV show involved weeks of healthy eating and exercise, her sleep pattern changed very little during the course of the experiment. She was only able to enjoy her first good night’s sleep after her first successful attempt at meditation. Sherrie isn’t alone. Twenty two per cent of Britons experience interrupted sleep, often caused by anxiety or depression. In the short term this can negatively affect mood and memory and in the long term it can lead to more serious health problems.

Testing times for the older generation While many of us become calmer and happier as we age, others suffer from a toxic cocktail of concerns: from worries about money and health to anxiety about what will happen when they become unable to care for themselves. Statistics released last autumn by the Department for Work and Pensions show that far from enjoying a tranquil retirement, a substantial number of older people continue to work past their state retirement date, with more than one in ten men working beyond the age of 70 and eight per cent of women working beyond that age. Stress and anxiety may begin in the mind, but these mental health issues can cause a range of physical symptoms, including digestive and bowel problems, aches and pains and a rapid heartbeat. If left unchecked in the long term, stress can also lead to depression.

A matter of belief? So, can meditation help older people to beat stress? Part of the problem is meditation’s image as a new age fad rather than a technique that can offer real health benefits. Sherrie Hewson admitted that she had “never believed in meditation”, and the idea that meditation is linked to religion or spirituality – therefore something you must believe in – makes people reluctant to try it out. However, as medical science reveals more and more about the way the brain functions, it seems there are compelling reasons why you should give meditation a chance. Meditation encourages people to take charge of their own emotions, and over time this has been shown to result in permanent changes to neural pathways in the brain. When the University of Pittsburgh in America carried out research into the effects of meditation, MRI scans revealed that the amygdala – the brain’s ‘fight or flight’ centre, linked to fear and emotion – appeared to shrink over time, while the prefrontal cortex (associated with concentration, awareness and decisionmaking) became thicker.

66

Improving concentration Meditation aids concentration by encouraging you to turn off unwanted or distracting thoughts. In an observation exercise for meditators and non-meditators designed by Italian neuroscientist Giuseppe Pagnoni, the meditators significantly outperformed in the test results. You can learn to control your thoughts during meditation by taking action when your mind starts to wander. The technique involves simply acknowledging the distraction and turning back to your main focus as soon as possible.

Taming your emotions By identifying and controlling anger through meditation you can restore emotional balance. In a recent study published in the journal Consciousness and Cognition, meditators and nonmeditators were asked to think about an experience that made them angry. While meditators were almost unaffected when they focused on the experience, non-meditators’ found their breathing, heart rate and blood pressure increased. However, after just 20 minutes of meditation the non-meditators had a much calmer response to the same thoughts.

Reducing stress, inducing sleep In the programme 100 Years Younger in 21 days, Professor Philp suggests that meditation can extend life expectancy by promoting better sleep. Lack of sleep not only leads to accelerated facial ageing, reduced energy and impaired concentration; it can also cause a build-up of beta amyloid (a protein that has been linked to the onset of Alzheimers disease) in the brain. A 2015 study of forty nine middle-aged and older adults who had difficulty sleeping revealed that mindfulness meditation – which encourages subjects to beat stress by focusing on moment-by-moment experiences, thoughts and emotions – was found to be particularly effective. Like many older adults, Sherrie Hewson believed that meditation wasn’t for her, but once she understood its effects, she experienced something of a revelation. The practice of meditation won’t suit everyone, but as medical science discovers more and more potential health benefits, anyone who experiences stress, sleeplessness or negative emotions on a regular basis would be well advised to give it a try.

Back to Stay

AND NOT JUST FOR THE WEEKEND

When, in November 2017, the Chancellor announced relief on Stamp Duty payments for first time buyers, it’s likely that millions of parents across the UK breathed a sigh of relief. It is estimated that 3.4 million parents in the UK are living with grown up children who’ve returned to the family home, and these mums and dads may have hoped the tax incentive would be the nudge their offspring needed to finally fly the nest. The phenomenon of so-called ‘Boomerang Kids’ (adults who return to the parental home after living independent lives) hit the headlines recently when the London School of Economics and Political Science carried out research with parents aged between 50 and 75 from seventeen different European countries. The study, published in the journal Social Science and Medicine, examined the effects on quality of life for older people who shared a house with a grown up child. Researchers looked at factors such as freedom to enjoy yourself, to make your own decisions and control your environment, and the results were disturbing. The academics who authored the study didn’t pull their punches when it came to their conclusions: “We found that parents’ experienced a decline in quality of life when one of their children returned to live with them,” they stated, adding: “Parents enjoy their independence when their children leave the home, and refilling an empty nest may be regarded as a violation of this life course stage.”

The ‘Boomerang’ experience So how does it feel when you’re asked to provide bed and board for a grown up child after they’ve lived independently for several years? Marsha Okafor was initially pleased and excited when her 23-year-old daughter Leah asked to return home so she could save for a deposit on a flat. However, after two years she found that the effort of sharing her tiny Birmingham apartment with her daughter was putting a strain on their relationship. “It’s the little things, like the time she spends in the bathroom, and asking friends round when I all I want is a quiet evening in front of the telly,” Marsha sighs. “I love my daughter, but having her here effectively puts my own life on hold. I had plans to move closer to my sisters in Nottingham, but I can’t do that while Leah needs to live in Birmingham for her work.” Jane and Phillip Leahy experienced similar problems when their son Mark asked to spend a few weeks at their home as he was between jobs and couldn’t afford his rent. The weeks turned into years and although Mark found another job, he showed no sign of wanting to leave.

70

“Mark’s 33 now, but his life follows the same pattern it did when he was a teenager,” Phillip explains. “He spends hours in his bedroom, playing computer games, and expects us to cook for him and do his laundry. He does pay us something towards his food, but it doesn’t compensate for the feeling that our home isn’t quite our own any more. I think we’re partly to blame: we’ve taken away his motivation to build a life of his own.”

Preparing the ground for your child’s return The biggest mistake reported by people who have been through the ‘boomerang’ experience is that they didn’t discuss the terms of the arrangement before their child moved back in. This is the time to establish the ground rules and set clear goals for the end of their stay. It may seem insensitive to talk about leaving before your child has even moved back in, but acknowledging this as a temporary arrangement will help them hold on to a sense of independence. If your child has a job, you should agree upfront on the amount they will contribute towards the household bills. If they are not working you could ask them to help in various ways, such as cleaning, shopping or tending the garden. Discuss how things will work if your child invites friends round, and which rooms are off-limits at those times. It may be less stressful if you restrict visits to certain days or hours. Finally – and most importantly – it’s vital to treat your child as the adult they have become. In the years they have been living away from you, it’s likely they will have established a lifestyle that’s very different to the family life you shared together, so give them space and don’t be tempted to ‘parent’ them in the way you used to do. Whatever your child’s reason for returning home may be, it’s likely that this is just a phase, after which they will once again be able to lead an independent life. Handled carefully, this episode may even strengthen the bonds between you and your son or daughter, creating a tighter family unit that will go on providing mutual support far into the future.

How to Manage the Cost of Entertaining the Kids this Summer

(NOT TO MENTION BACK-TO-SCHOOL EXPENDITURE)

If you’re worried about the cost of entertaining your children this summer, you’re not alone. It’s been estimated the average family spends £389 on entertaining the kids during the summer holidays. Ecommerce marketplace Groupon surveyed 3,000 parents and found that 9% started planning and saving for the school summer holidays up to six months beforehand. Furthermore, 35% of parents had to cut back on their everyday spending at the end of the summer because they’d spent too much during the school holidays. So in the light of this, what can you do to ease your financial situation at this time of year? Here are just a few ideas to help you manage the cost of entertaining the children and deal with the inevitable back-to-school expenditure. Prioritise your spending Prioritising essential outgoings, such as rent, mortgage payments or council tax, allows you to steer clear of serious financial trouble. You’re not risking the roof over your head and will still be able to buy the groceries to feed your family. It’s so easy to get carried away when you’re planning activities with the kids and spend money that’s already allocated somewhere else. Don’t assume you’ll be able to catch up with priority payments later on, however – once you start getting behind with these, it won’t be long before you’re in serious debt. Make a budget By carefully budgeting before the summer begins, you may find areas where you can cut back. Knowing exactly where your money goes means you can consciously reduce your outgoings wherever possible, and potentially find some extra money to spend on taking the kids for a day out. Perhaps there are one or two subscriptions that could be cancelled, for example, or a cheaper supermarket that you could try, plus getting into the habit of cooking meals from scratch when you’re at home will save some money in its own right, and is a good precedent to set for the whole year. Find free or low-cost activities in your area Make full use of the internet by searching for free activities in your area. You should be able to find a few deals on days out, or coupons and vouchers for money off entry to kids’ attractions. Theme parks can be particularly expensive for families, but with a ‘2 for 1’ offer on admissions, or a meal deal when you’re there, you’ll all enjoy a great day out without it breaking the bank. The best ideas for free activities depend on how old your children are, but could include such pursuits as story time at the local library, walks or bike rides in the countryside, or hopscotch and skipping games. Make some extra money You can make a surprising amount of money by selling unwanted items on the internet. Children’s clothes and toys are great sellers, for example, but also books and CDs. Online questionnaires and surveys are also a good way for you to

74

earn a little more, and these can be completed from the comfort of your own home after the children have gone to bed. Get the children involved with money If your children are old enough you can introduce them to the realities of managing money, albeit with small amounts at first. They’ll begin to understand that money is finite, and they can’t have everything they want. Plan ahead for the next school holidays It’s never too early to plan ahead financially – even getting ready for next summer. By planning well ahead you’ll have a rough idea of how much the summer holidays will cost and can put a little bit of money aside in advance. What about back-to-school costs? The cost of school uniforms and all the other ancillary bits and pieces the children need for the new term can be the final straw for your finances at the end of the summer holidays, so what can you do to help yourself financially in this respect? • If you have more than one child at the same school and the uniform is in decent condition, you could hand it down to a younger brother or sister. • Buying school uniform towards the end of the summer holidays is a good idea. Children grow so quickly and this way you can also make sure they get the most wear out of their uniform. • Some schools operate second-hand uniform sales when the end of the holidays is approaching – this can offer huge savings as you don’t have to buy new items. • Giving a slightly older child some money to buy their own stationery or other school items can teach them about money management, particularly if you let them keep the change. For families on low incomes, dealing with school summer holiday costs adds stress to an already challenging financial situation. Keeping the children entertained can be expensive, but with a little planning and budgeting, hopefully it won’t impact too heavily on family finances at this time or during the rest of the year.

Telford Franchise ZeroDryTime (ZDT) is a national cleaning company based in Newcastle Upon Tyne and offers franchised floor cleaning services across the UK. Ben and Paul Woodhead operate the Telford franchise from Telford Laundry’s premises at Stafford Park in Telford.

OF NATIONAL CLEANING COMPANY

Regular commercial customers can enjoy a Service Plan whereby ZDT appear at prescribed intervals whilst some clients book a day or two a month to undertake whatever needs doing. ZDT Telford can offer on-site curtain cleaning or take down and rehang with cleaning undertaken at Telford Laundry Ltd. Flood or smoke damage can be treated with portable ozone generators as Telford Laundry was Britain’s first ozonated laundry. Ozone is like the smell after a thunder and lightning storm. It does not mask smells, it kills them and disinfests at the same time. ZDT Telford’s technicians are fully insured, CRB checked and Checkatrade accredited. This offers security to the vulnerable, young, old and infirm. Checkatrade offers a money back guarantee and requires the customer to privately “score” the job done. This is via a prepaid card and measures the performance of the technicians as well as the satisfaction level for the job undertaken.

ZeroDryTime (ZDT) has cleaned carpets and upholstery in over 100,000 domestic homes. It has also cleaned floor surfaces in hotels including Ibis, Thistle, Hilton and Malmaison. Commercial work has been undertaken at The Shard, Harrods, Audi, BMW and Harvey Nicholls. Paul even helped clean a listed castle on Hadrian’s Wall. Carpets are cleaned using an American dry sponge system and together with other ZDT developed chemistry are brought back from an often-sorry state. Upholstery and Leather is cleaned using a low foam technology. With modern households often specifying hard surface flooring, ZDT is able to clean stone, concrete, ceramics, porcelain, quarry and terrazzo tiles (including grout) as well as all vinyls including Karndean and Amtico. ZDT Telford have just completed a major wooden kitchen floor restoration in the area. The Parquet wooden floor was over 200 years old and badly damaged by an earlier contractor who had sanded it within a hairsbreadth of its life and used an angle grinder! The floor owner is now a happy customer and the job took 6 days. Swimming pool sides, changing rooms, lavatories and jacuzzis can all benefit from ZDT’s unique anti slip treatment. ZDT has developed a product for polishing marble surfaces such as work tops and is currently developing a leather re-colouring service.

WONDER WALLS

A change of wallcovering can transform cold into cosy, boring into beautiful and out of date into ultra-cool. Our lowdown is sure to give you some exciting ideas. A plain white wall. Boring? Perhaps. But it could be just the thing to show off a colourful collection or provide a counterpoint to brightly patterned upholstery. On the other hand, vibrant wallpaper could be the perfect way to inject colour and create interest in a room. Choosing the best wall finish for your space is all about context – and is just as important in terms of decorative effect as selecting colours, fabrics and furnishings. Nothing transforms a room as quickly and easily as a fresh coat of paint on the walls and woodwork. Always research colours Image: Exotic Leaf Pattern wallpaper mural, to order, Wallsauce: 01772 284 110; wallsauce.com. before you commit, buying sample pots and trialling them on large pieces of card same type of wallpaper vertically all around a room. But if you that you can pin up in different areas of the room, assessing feel like being daring, create a feature by papering just one how the colour appears at different times of day and night. wall, or choose different colourways of the same pattern to Pay attention to finish, too, as flat matt surfaces appear very use in different areas. You could even hang your wallpaper different to shiny, glossy ones. horizontally, or mix up the designs to create a hand-crafted, The most obvious alternative to painted walls is wallpaper. bohemian effect. Choices include not only conventional machine-printed Tiles come in as great a variety of colours and patterns as designs but also natural woven fibres, light-reflecting metallic wallpaper – they can be sleek and machine-made or rustic and papers and waterproof vinyls. If you are seeking something hand-made, shiny and glazed or matt and unglazed, perfectly a little different, there are hand-finished papers that feature smooth or nicely textured, or even digitally printed with your cut-work, stitching or appliqué, interactive papers that you can own designs. Long-lasting and hard-wearing, waterproof and colour in or add stickers to, hand-blocked papers (pricey but easy to clean, tiles are ideal as wall finishes for bathrooms, gorgeous), three-dimensional designs incorporating crystals, showers and behind kitchen worktops, but they are also great beading, sequins or tiny LED lights, digitally printed papers for hallways, conservatories, laundry rooms and utility rooms made to your own design and even magnetic wallpapers that and, given their immense decorative potential, can sometimes work as a noticeboard. Convention has it that you hang the work as part of a living area, too.

IDEAS FOR FEATURE WALLS • Transform your wall with peel-off stickers. They come in all sorts of divine designs from simple shapes to complex illustrations. • Wallpaper with an oversized pattern and vivid colours may well be too much for a whole room, but makes a great focal point on just one wall. • Think paint effects are passé? Not when you try modern, graphic ideas such as bold horizontal stripes or an ombré/dip dye look. • Large maps (old or new) are attractive and educational. Simply paste straight on to the wall. Try sheet music and wrapping paper, too. • Take any digital image and have it enlarged to cover an entire wall. Eye-poppingly gorgeous. • Use a variety of vintage wallpaper samples as a colourful collage. Combine with paint, too, if you wish.

80

Finally, while paint and wallpaper are by far the most common ways to cover a wall, with a little imagination and ingenuity you will find that almost any flat surface can be employed to create an interesting decorative effect. Timber panelling can hide wonky walls and is a great insulator. It also has a lovely warmth and character. Fielded panelling gives a classic feel, while tongue and groove is cosy and country. A wall (or a portion of it) covered with a sheet of mirror will reflect light around and instantly make the room seem bigger, while sheets of plastic laminate or solid composite have interesting decorative potential. Being waterproof and needing few joins, they are a good choice for bathrooms. Using paper-backed fabric to line walls is a traditional (if expensive) technique that is great for insulating against cold and noise and, taking this notion further, leather walls add luxurious character, soften sounds and are even fire-retardant. Cork walls are warm and soft to the touch, eco-friendly, insulating and soundproofing, and come in a range of colours, patterns and textures. You could even consider polished plaster, which has a beautiful depth of colour, or sheet metal for an unusual, industrial look.

Staying Safe

IN THE SUN

Don’t know your UVA from your UVB? Worried about a mole? Want to be prepared in case you get sunburnt? This guide is for you… First up – the difference between UVA and UVB. Both are types of ultraviolet radiation that can increase your risk of getting skin cancer. UVA rays prematurely age skin, leading to more wrinkles and pigmentation. UVB rays are the ones that actually burn. ‘SPF’ is short for sun protection factor. The higher the number, the better the protection. The British Association of Dermatologists recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or over. However, the SPF only relates to UVB rays, not UVA rays. So you’ll need to look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both types of ultraviolet radiation. You then need to apply it at least 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply it at least every two hours.

Weleda’s Edelweiss Sunscreen Facial Lotion

protects against both

UVA and UVB, has an SPF of 30 and is packed with skin-friendly ingredients, such as organic coconut and jojoba oils. It’s suitable for all skin types and smells rather lovely, with subtle notes of citrus and lavender. Priced at £13.95, the lotion can be bought online from www.weleda.co.uk. If you do forget to slap on the sunscreen, aloe vera can help to soothe sunburnt skin. Not all aloe vera gels are created equally, however. Some contain very little actual aloe vera, so do check the ingredients list.

Dr. Organic Aloe Vera Gel

is a good choice. It has an instant cooling effect, is hypoallergenic and helps to restore hydration. The gel costs £5.59 from Holland & Barrett. Do you suffer from prickly heat, or find you only have to look at the sun to go red?

Trilogy’s Very Gentle Calming Serum is worth a try. It’s specially

formulated to reduce inflammation and irritation. As the name suggests, it’s fragrance-free and gentle enough for even sensitive skin. Ingredients include aloe vera, green tea, chamomile, sweet almond oil and evening primrose oil. The serum costs £29.50 from Boots or www.trilogyproducts.co.uk. If you’re worried about a mole or other changes to your skin, it’s always best to book in to see your GP. In the meantime, The British Association of Dermatologists’ ABCD-Easy guide details the main things to look for: • Asymmetry: the two halves of the area may differ in shape. • Border: the edges of the area may be irregular or blurred, and sometimes show notches. • Colour: this may be uneven. Different shades of black, brown and pink may be seen. • Diameter: most melanomas are at least 6mm in diameter. Report any change in size, shape or diameter to your doctor. • Expert: if in doubt, check it out! If your GP is concerned about your skin, make sure you see a Consultant Dermatologist. Your GP can refer you via the NHS. For more information about protecting your skin, check out www.bad.org.uk.

A Sting

IN THE TAIL

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) is used by thousands of drivers to finance a car purchase, as it offers flexibility and affordability. PCP is a loan but, unlike a traditional loan, you won’t own the car at the term end (unless you choose to). This has the advantage of lower monthly payments. Determined by the dealer, the car will have a Guaranteed Minimum Future Value (GMFV) at the PCP term end. When the time comes, should the car be valued at a figure higher than this, then you will have the difference between the two figures to put down as a deposit on your next car.

annual miles – that’s 120 miles PER WEEK – is common, which is my weekly commute. Any other driving will take you over that annual figure and the excess charge could be 8p/mile. A mid-20s driver I know signed up for a 3-year PCP with such a term. He reached the 18,000 limit in 15 months and the finance company have told him to put away at least £120 per month to cover the excess mileage fee he will incur. PCP is viable way to finance a car but, like any contract, read the small print!. by Iain Betson

Sounds good. Low payments and a deposit at the end. But be aware of the PCP terms, otherwise you may get stung. Adverts not only show the fun and affordability of owning a new car, they also show the small-print – notably the annual mileage clause. To get the GMFV figure up, and thus the monthly payments down, the dealer wants a low mileage car at term end. A figure of 6,000

Notes from your local Muxton Councillor Drivers will have noticed the appearance of Speed Indicator Signs (SIDS) in Muxton and Donnington. Several locations have been selected where speeding traffic is s a problem. The signs will be moved periodically to ensure that drivers do not get too familiar with the location and be more likely to ignore them. Following a spate of anti social behaviour I am investigating the costs involved in having CCTV installed in some of the public areas of Muxton, similar to that already in Donnington.

COMMUNITY & WHATS ON

Books

INSPIRE YOUR WANDERLUST

Thinking about booking a last-minute holiday? These books should help to inspire your wanderlust. (Or just transport you to distant climes while you’re lounging in your garden.)

The Road to Little Dribbling – Bill Bryson

In The Road to Little Dribbling, Bill Bryson sets out to explore Britain once again – 20 years after his bestselling Notes from a Small Island. Not only is it highly entertaining, but The Road to Little Dribbling is packed full of facts and wry observations. You’ll veer from rolling your eyes at Bryson’s ‘grumpy-old-man-ishness’ to vigorously nodding your head, to snorting with laughter, to booking a train ticket to explore a corner of this island you haven’t yet stumbled upon.

The Bean Trees – Barbara Kingsolver

Determined to avoid ending up like her Kentucky classmates – pregnant and married before she’s 18, Taylor buys a beaten up old car and a tank of petrol, and heads west. By the time her car breaks down in Arizona, she has a three-year-old Cherokee girl in tow. First published 30 years ago, The Bean Trees beautifully evokes the landscape and spirit of 1980s Southwestern America.

Adventures of a Young Naturalist – Sir David Attenborough

In 1954, David Attenborough began his exploration of the world, seeking out rare animals for London Zoo and sharing his experiences with a captive TV audience back at home. Adventures of a Young Naturalist charts his adventures across Guyana, Indonesia and Paraguay, from coming face-to-face with Komodo dragons and giant armadillos to befriending a young male orangutan. Numerous photographs help to bring the tales to life.

The Earth From The Air – Yann Arthus-Bertrand

It’s been almost 20 years since Yann Arthus-Bertrand first set out to capture aerial photography of some of the most remote places on Earth. The result – The Earth From the Air – went on to sell more than 3 million copies. A new edition was released last year, which includes 100 stunning new photographs and commentary from the likes of Jane Goodall and Matthieu Ricard. Breathtaking.

The Art of Travel – Alain de Botton

Alain de Botton explores the reasons why we travel and discusses how we can make the most of our experiences. He covers everything from holiday romances to hotel mini-bars. It’s a book about taking pleasure in our surroundings (however mundane) and taking the time to look, really look, at the world around us.

Wanderlust: A Book Club Sampler from Simon & Schuster

This travel-inspired sampler is only available as a free Kindle ebook. It includes excerpts from several novels, including An Atlas of Impossible Longing by Anuradha Roy, The Distant Hours by Kate Morton and The Hundred Foot Journey by Richard Morais. Also included are the authors’ favourite travel-related memories and notes and tips for book clubs. Perfect for dipping into on a summer’s evening, Wanderlust may help you to find your next book and your next holiday destination.
