Home Makeover Experts
LAUNCH NEW LOCAL SHOWROOM
With more than 200 showrooms across four continents and around 8,000 kitchen and bathroom installations carried out globally each month, Granite Transformations lays claim to being the world’s leading home transformations company. Its tough, slimline and lastingly beautiful kitchen worktops and bathroom surfaces will instantly transform outdated décor and come with an unrivalled lifetime material warranty. So news that a Granite Transformations showroom is opening locally at Battlefield Enterprise Park, Shrewsbury will be of interest to house-proud homeowners looking for high quality, low cost kitchen and bathroom makeovers. With dozens of different Italian granite, quartz and eco-friendly recycled glass worktop designs and colours to choose from, plus replacement cabinet doors and glass mosaic splashbacks, there’s a delightful new look for every home. “We know that people around here appreciate quality, value and good design, so many will already be aware of the Granite Transformations name and reputation. But seeing is believing, so our new showroom allows householders to touch and feel our beautiful, hardwearing surfaces and view all the stylish colours we offer,” says showroom owner Richard. “We promise to look after our customers well, advising them on interior design options, measuring up their existing units
and fittings, fabricating their worktops and other surfaces in our workshop, then installing them with the minimum of fuss, usually in just a day or so. We aim to make your makeover a pleasant, stress-free experience with a delightful outcome.” Affordability is one key to Granite Transformations’ market success, with a complete kitchen makeover, including worktops, replacement doors, drawer fronts, sink units and monobloc taps, typically costing less than half the price of new fitted units. There’s less disruption too, since there’s no ripping out or demolition, no dust and debris, and just two factorytrained fitters will carry out all the work, even laying floor tiles and glass mosaic splashbacks if required. “Apart from saving you money and stress, kitchen refacing retains your existing cabinet carcases and familiar layout, saving on landfill waste, rewiring and major plumbing work,” says Richard. “Bathroom makeovers can usually be achieved without ripping out old ceramic tiles and we can fabricate new bath surrounds and vanity units. We can smarten up utility rooms too, running a wipe-clean countertop, over a dishwasher, washing machine and storage areas.” The Shrewsbury showroom offers one of the largest selections of made-to-measure replacement doors and drawer fronts, which can be expertly fitted alongside the worktops. There are 20 different styles and over 30 colours to create the best combination for your home, including woodgrains, ultragloss solid shades, matt finishes, metallics, fashionable neutral tones, even paintable vinyl for a custom look. Naturally, there is a complementary choice of handles, knobs, drawer pulls and such fittings as soft-close hinges, together with accessories like pelmets, shelves, canopies and wine racks.

WEDDING FEATURE
Finding the Dress When it comes to planning a wedding every girls’ number one priority is finding her dream dress. And fortunately, if you are working to a strict budget, there is more choice than ever before these days, at a price you can afford. Local bridal boutiques are great. Not only do you receive the best in personalised customer service, but there’s a fabulous selection of lesser known brands and independent labels, that help to ensure your dress will be unique. Buying your wedding gown is the most special purchase you’ll ever make, and although it might be a ong process before you find ‘the one’ - it will be worth it in the end.
How to find ‘the one’… Be completely open minded as soon as you start your hunt for the perfect dress. You probably will have some preconceived ideas about what will suit you, and so will naturally avoid certain looks. But it really is essential to break from these thoughts and try as many different styles as you can get your hands on.
OF YOUR DREAMS
Minimalist, sleek and modern might have been what you had in mind, but full-on fairytale princess could be just the thing to make your dreams come true. It’s crucial to think about your height, figure and shape when looking for your gown. Carefully consider what is most flattering and what will make you feel truly special but comfortable too. Strapless, shoulder-revealing designs might look perfect on the model, but will they really be right for you? Make sure you listen carefully to the honest opinions of your family and friends - they see you differently to how you see yourself. And, always take advantage of the professional advice that’s on offer from sales staff - they deal with hundreds of brides everyday and are well versed in what works best for all different shapes and sizes. Upon settling on the style that’s going to make you look gorgeous, consider colours. Shades of white and cream can vary dramatically and as great as a stark white gown might look on a dark haired tanned bride, it could completely wash-out someone who is pale and fair - a complexion enhancing creamy, ivory hue would look so much better. For those who love something that bit different though, embrace bold colour, statement design and enchanting embellishments. Just make sure that everything combines to make you look and feel beautiful.

Finding the Wedding Venue
THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU
Choosing the wedding venue that’s perfect for what you’ve got planned for your big day is one of the most challenging decisions you’ll have to make. It needs to be practical, affordable and ideal for you and your guests. There’s certainly a lot to consider and knowing where to start can be hard-work. That’s why we’ve compiled a guide to the main things you need to think about when you start your search. 1.
Seeking out a venue will most likely be one of the first things you’ll do, so try to establish a rough budget and get an idea of how many guests you’ll be inviting.
2. Think about the kind of wedding you want: a lavish
large-scale affair? Or something a little more lowkey? The venue provides the back-drop to your big day, so it needs to reflect and complement the style of your nuptials.
8
3. You’ve probably got a good idea of which season
you want to marry in. Make sure that you get a look at photos of the venue at that particular time of year and don’t be afraid to ask about heating/ air-conditioning and lighting.
4. If you long for a contemporary, minimalist wedding,
then you’ll need to find a venue which is designed in that style. It’s best to choose a modern building to house proceedings and important to look for a sleek interior that will complement the modern look you favour. However, if something a little more tradition is more appealing, then check-out the array of stately homes and period properties that could be perfect for you. Just make sure that they’re easily accessible for all of your guests.
5. Find out what the venue offers you. Will you be
renting just the space? Or will table, chair and linen hire be available also?
6. Although the car park may look big when its
empty, will it accommodate all of your guests’ vehicles when full? Think about how your guests will get to the location and if they’ll be able to park safely and easily when they arrive.
7. Find out if catering is carried out in-house by the
venue’s own staff or if outside caterers are used. See if you can get a taste of the kind of food that’s on offer. Also, ask if the waiters are employed by the venue or if they’re from an agency.
8. You’ll need to establish if there is more than one wedding co-ordinator or master of ceremonies. Do you get to meet and discuss your day with that person directly before your wedding?
9. Don’t act in haste. It’s worth visiting all of the
venues on your shortlist before you make a decision. You may come across a venue that seems perfect, but before you sign the contract, ensure that you are thoroughly satisfied that it will provide you with everything you and your guests require.
10. Don’t feel pressured to book or sign the contract
if you’re presented with a special offer or cut rate - any good venue will give you time to go away and think before you make your final decision. by Helen Taylor

Dress to Impress If you’ve received an all-important wedding invite then you’ll want to dress to impress. A smartly tailored suit is essential, but finding one that fits perfectly - and is within your budget - is easier said than done. That’s why we’ve compiled a useful guide that’ll help you to find a suit that’s not only perfect for the occasion but the most flattering fit for your body type too. If you’re a tall, small or large guy who generally struggles to find clothes that fit well, don’t even bother traipsing around the high street until you’ve checked out stores that offer ranges tailored to meet your individual requirements. Fortunately there’s plenty of choice nowadays. Debenhams have a ‘Big and Tall’ collection, with longer sleeve and leg lengths, as well as sizes up to 6XL. For short guys there’s a great selection on the ASOS website, which feature shorter arm and leg measurements and sizes starting at XXXS. When you’re suit shopping you’ll need to find something that’s suitable for the time of year. Light colours, like stone grey or powder blue, work well for a summer wedding. Think carefully about the fabric too; avoid heavy material and instead go for airy fabrics that’ll keep you cool, like full linen or linen cotton blends. Charcoal grey and navy blue hues make for the perfect winter wedding suit. A weightily, wool blend fabric is sure to keep you warm whatever the weather.
GUIDE FOR THE GUYS
When you’re making your choice consider your body shape: Large guys: Don’t be tempted to buy a baggy suit - even though it feels comfy - as the excess material will create a messy silhouette which is unflattering for your frame. The material should rest lightly on your body - not gripping it tightly or hanging too loose. Choose a simple suit and avoid strong colours or patterns, opt for lightweight fabrics too, so that you don’t add additional bulk. Small guys: Create the illusion of height and a leaner silhouette by choosing a slim-fitting or skinny suit. Keep trousers neat, narrow and slightly cropped. You may be tempted to go for a longer length, thinking that you’ll create the look of lengthier legs but actually it’ll have the opposite effect. A subtle turn-up or crop that finishes a few centimetres above the ankle is ideal. Vertical stripes are perfect for smaller guys as they create an illusion of length. Tall guys: Like all men, tall guys need a suit that fits well. Excess material, ill fitting jackets and trousers and sloppy cuts do nothing to flatter a tall frame. Tall, slim guys should aim to break-up their imposing frame by opting for three piece suits or double breasted jackets. These serve to add bulk and disguise some of the length. Textured weaves work on your physique too, so if you fancy something a little different try a subtle pattern.
Here’s the key things to consider when assessing the fit of a suit: Shoulders: Suit shoulders should hug your own, they should look neat and be comfortable. Material that is too tight or baggy across the shoulders indicates the wrong fit. If stretching and movement makes the seams feel tight, opt for a bigger size. Chest: There should be enough movement in the suit jacket for you to sit and move comfortably when it’s buttoned, but it shouldn’t be too loose. Check the space between the buttoned jacket and your chest by placing your fist between the two, if the gap is any wider than your fist, you’ll need a smaller size. Sleeves: Sleeves that are too long on a jacket that fits perfectly aren’t a problem, as they can be easily altered by a tailor, however sleeves that are too short are a big no-no. If you have difficulty finding sleeves that are long enough then try a range designed for taller men. Length: If you can reach the hem of your jacket when your arms are straight by your sides then it’s too long. Modern jackets should sit an inch or two below the cuffs. Trousers: Your trousers shouldn’t be too tight or too loose, a slim fit is generally most flattering for men. Ensure that the length is adequate when teamed with your shoes, if the trousers are too long they can be turned-up easily by a tailor.

GIFTS FOR MOTHER'S DAY
Treat mum this Mother’s Day, with a luxurious beauty gift that she’d probably never dream of buying for herself. Clarins’ make-up palettes are some of the best on the market in my opinion, and their latest offering is no exception. The Natural Glow Eye Shadow Palette, £33, features five very wearable shades, from light beige to warm brown, all housed in an attractive rose-gold coloured compact. They’re easy to apply, and the palette is perfect for keeping in a handbag to transform a natural day time look into night time glam. Get it quick though; it’s a limited edition, and if previous incarnations are anything to go by, it’s likely to sell out pretty fast. If you’re looking to earn some serious brownie points, perfume is the way to go. Connock London‘s Kukui is brimming with floral notes, including gardenia, Moroccan rose, white jasmine and calla lily, but it’s given a grown-up, oriental twist with notes of sandalwood, vetiver, white amber and warm vanilla. The result is a truly gorgeous fragrance, and the bottle looks rather lovely sat out on display as well. There’s a very good chance this could become her new favourite scent. At £75 for 100ml, it’s not cheap, but consider it part-payment for all that teenage angst she had to deal with. Buying a treat for a mum-to-be? Neal’s Yard Remedies Mothers range has been specially formulated to nurture women during pregnancy. The range includes a balm, massage oil and bath oil. The balm and massage oil can help to prevent stretch marks, while the bath oil aids relaxation and a restful night’s sleep, as well as softening skin. (It also smells rather lovely too.) Prices start from £15, so the range is great value, as a little goes a long way and each bottle is packed with high quality, natural ingredients, such as lavender oil, neroli and mandarin essential oils. The Eco Chic Body Lotion and Shower Gel gift set by Green Energy Organics is ideal if you’re on a budget this Mother’s Day. Priced at £14.95, this is luxury on a shoestring. Not only are the shower gel and lotion packed with skin friendly oils, such as avocado and jojoba, but they smell divine, with notes of blackcurrant, rose, myrrh, jasmine, tonka bean, vanilla, and white musk. They’re also very gentle, as they don’t contain any dyes, sodium lauryl sulphate or parabens. Available from millabaci.com Dashing out last minute to buy a gift? Head to Marks and Spencer and check out their Pure Relaxing range. Team the body wash, body lotion and hand & nail cream with either the candle or diffuser to create an at-home spa experience. Products are scented with lavender, geranium and other oils to help mum relax, unwind and de-stress. Throw in a glass of prosecco and some music, and there’s little doubt you’ll be seen as the favourite child. Prices start from £6.

SKI HOLIDAYS
Looking for a great place to ski? Andorra is an absolute must for skiers of all abilities. Lively with some surprisingly fantastic skiing, the principality of Andorra is a great location for value skiing in a different atmosphere to mainstream alpine Europe. In addition to the highaltitude skiing, activities and renowned nightlife in Pas there is also tax-free shopping in Andorra La Vella. It’s a fantastic all-round winter getaway. As for the skiing, there is sizeable terrain to explore both in Vallnord and Grandvalira and off-piste lovers and boarders will certainly find fun up at Arcalis. The ski areas in the country are particularly good for beginner skiers. Grandvalira benefits from some great wide-open pistes, gentle gradients on beginner slopes not to mention the fact that Andorra has some of the best ski schools there are. As well as finding English speaking instructors in most ski schools in Andorra, in the Vallnord ski area which covers Arinsal and La Massana the ski school is BASIapproved meaning you know you’re in good hands.
being a quieter and more comfortable alternative resort with the same skiing. Also worth a visit is the Caldea spa where you can spend a day being pampered with an array of pools, baths and treatments. This is the perfect excuse for a day’s break from skiing or if you have non-skiers in your party.
What you get is a more fun and relaxed approach and environment which is reflected most in what is undoubtedly the après capital of the Pyrenees Pas de la Casa. The resort is very much all about fun both on and off the mountain, with its mountain neighbour Soldeu

Health If you suffer from bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), the answer may well be yes. Wheat allergy, wheat sensitivity, wheat intolerance and Coeliac disease are often used interchangeably and poorly understood. However, before we look at these conditions and how to deal with them, it’s worth emphasising that you should ALWAYS see your GP if your symptoms are severe and persistent, especially if you have blood in your stools, vomiting, excessive bloating or very painful stomach cramps, as these symptoms may be signs of other medical conditions, some of them serious.
Do You Have a Wheat Allergy? If you are truly allergic to wheat, eating wheat-based products will provoke your immune system into a rapid reaction, causing classic allergy symptoms such as itching, rashes, sneezing and wheezing. Tackling Wheat Allergy: If you are wheat allergic, you need to avoid wheat in any form to prevent symptoms and seek advice from your GP. If you have fatigue as well as gastrointestinal symptoms, then it’s worth asking:
Do You Have Coeliac Disease? Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition that affects around 1% of people in the UK, but it’s likely that many more cases go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. In Coeliac sufferers, the intestinal lining can become damaged because it can’t absorb gluten, a protein found in foods such as wheat, barley and rye. They may also encounter problems when eating other foods such as oats, which don’t contain gluten but are often prepared alongside foods that do. Besides bloating, diarrhoea, nausea, wind and constipation, which can all occur as a result of IBS or food intolerance too, Coeliac disease can also cause tiredness, hair loss, mouth ulcers, anaemia and sometimes unexpected weight loss. Tackling Coeliac Disease: It can be accurately diagnosed with a blood test, followed by a biopsy if the blood test indicates the possibility of Coeliac disease. These tests are only accurate if you are still eating foods that contain gluten, so if your symptoms make you suspect Coeliac disease specifically, go straight to your GP. If you’ve already put yourself on an elimination diet, be aware that your GP will ask you to start eating gluten-containing foods regularly again until the tests are complete. If Coeliac disease is diagnosed, you must eliminate all gluten permanently. If your symptoms don’t necessarily point to Coeliac disease:
Do You Have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)? It’s not entirely clear what causes Irritable bowel syndrome, but stress and illness seem to precipitate attacks, making
26
SHOULD YOU BE WARY OF WHEAT? the working of the bowel erratic and so causing discomfort, bloating and sometimes diarrhoea and/or constipation. Tackling IBS: IBS attacks often seem to be worse after eating fatty or high-fibre foods, so avoiding these may help. Probiotic supplements or foods can help and your GP may recommend medication to prevent and alleviate symptoms.
Do You Have Wheat Intolerance/Sensitivity? Wheat intolerance or sensitivity is much more common than wheat allergy, potentially causing trapped or excessive gas in the intestine and preventing proper emptying of the bowel. Symptoms can develop some hours after eating wheat and this means the condition can be hard to pinpoint, particularly if you eat wheat regularly, and it’s not something your GP can test for. Try cutting out wheat for four weeks to see if your symptoms improve (ensuring you replace it with alternatives like rice, corn, buckwheat pasta and quinoa to ensure you’re getting all the necessary nutrients). Remember that wheat is a hidden ingredient in many foods, such as soy sauce and hydrolysed vegetable protein (HVP), and also found in most breads, cakes, pastas, pastries, cereals, couscous, biscuits, and beers. Keep a food diary in case another food type, such as dairy, is the culprit – but don’t eliminate whole food groups long-term without consulting your GP. Reintroduce wheat slowly, in as pure a form as possible (such as 100% wheat cereals). If your symptoms reappear, it’s a good indication that you have wheat sensitivity; trial and error will tell you whether your intolerance is for all wheat products or just certain ones. Some people are fine with pasta but not bread, and vice versa; it can depend on the process the wheat has undergone. Some people can tolerate toast better than bread because the heating process makes the wheat more digestible, while others find supermarket bread less digestible than traditional bakery bread, probably due to the accelerated bread-making process supermarkets often use.
Tackling Wheat Sensitivity – and IBS: The FODMAP diet Designed originally for people with IBS, the wheat-free lowFODMAP diet eliminates Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides And Polyols - types of carbohydrates that aren’t easily digested and may cause bacterial growth, leading to diarrhoea and bloating. The FODMAP diet should be followed under a dietician’s guidance to ensure you stay in good health and follow it correctly, as it’s quite complex. Your GP can give you a referral. “Miruji has helped Me lose over 5 stone” IF Angie Robinson’s husband Tom ever wins the lottery, he says he wants to invest it all in Miruji. Angie, from Roden, was a dress size 32 and barely able to leave the house. Now, with the help of the Sit and Slim programme, she has lost six and a half stone and is a healthier size 2426 and far more agile. “I’m so overwhelmed with the chair; it’s unreal. I’ve been able to walk better, go upstairs better. I was a complete mess; I was getting to be like a hermit. I didn’t want to go anywhere. “My husband Tom said he’s noticed such a difference in my wellbeing. My whole personality has changed, I’m more relaxed. I had a job to keep up
with him when we’re walking. Now it’s the other way around. He’s absolutely delighted for me.” She has macular degenerative disease, emphysema, sciatica and short-term memory loss, following an accident when she slipped and hit her head on concrete. It was when she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes on top of her other problems, that she decided to try Miruji. She is so proud that she has achieved such sustained weight-loss for herself and is determined to continue: “I love it. I can’t wait – I look forward to ‘my therapy’. It’s so relaxing. I can’t describe to anyone how much it’s made me feel in myself, just wellbeing.
“everyone said it wouldn’t worK, but i lost 2 stone” SUSAn Childs thought Miruji sounded ‘too good to be true’ until she tried it for herself – and lost two stone. “I was curious about it and thought I’d give it a try,” she said. That was 12 months ago. Now she is singing Miruji’s praises from the rooftops. “Everyone I talk to said it couldn’t possibly work, but I don’t think they fully understand it.” She has proved them wrong, and then some, by losing two stone, from 14st
4lb to 12st 4lb and dropping several dress sizes. “You have to be ready to make that commitment to go regularly,” she said. “I never in a million years thought I could do this. It’s absolutely brilliant. I’m pulling jeans out from my wardrobe that I haven’t been anywhere near for four years. I used to hide it all under the baggiest of tops. I am so much more confident, my husband is really, really impressed with me.” Susan eats smaller meals, but nothing in between and she still has a pudding every day.
nasreeM lost over 4 stone using the sit & sliM chair
nASReeM is typical of many women these days who are busy with work, children and making sure the housework is done. Nasreem had neglected herself over the last few years because she was too busy looking after everyone else. She was left feeling worn out, frustrated and tired. Nasreem did what many people do and started comfort eating. Before she knew it she was a size 20. She went along for the Sit & Slim trial and has never looked back. She says “When I went along the first time I didn’t know what to expect but I was so unhappy with myself I was prepared to try anything. When I finished the treatment I felt abso-
lutely wonderful. I felt energised and more positive about being able to lose weight and keep it off. For the first time in years I was looking after myself, it was my ‘me time’. I lost a stone after just 5 weeks and the more I lost the better I felt. I have now lost 4 and a half stone and gone from a size 20 to a size 12.” “My friends don’t recognise me. When I tell them I’ve lost all this weight by sitting on the Sit & Slim Chair they don’t believe me. I say to them just go and try it. You can have a free treatment. I would definitely recommend anyone to try it. You will love it, I’m sure.”
“Miruji has helped Me lose 3 stone and i feel better in every way” Ann, 69, has lost three stone, ditched her painkillers and “got her life in order” since beginning therapy at Miruji. The former fraud investigator from Shrewsbury, was forced to retire with agonising back pain and said she was taking eight strong painkillers just to get through each day. She began using the Miruji chair and has not looked back. “I noticed the benefit right away,” she said. “I’ve had a terribly bad back for most of my life. I’ve tried massage and various
other interventions but the pain still prevailed.” Ann said she lost three stones “very quickly”, taking herself in hand after the audio encouraged her to “get her life in order”. I do still take some painkillers but I am in no way dependent on them as I used to be. I know Miruji may not be the ultimate solution to my back pain but it is very, very effective and extremely helpful. “I am hooked for life.

nhs Manager says “i feel so Much better” nHS manager Sonia began coming to Miruji, attracted by the idea of having some time to herself, for relaxation and with a view to losing some weight. She has a very busy job, with competing demands upon her time and is mum to an eight-year-old daughter. “What was remarkable was not so much the weight-loss, although I did lose half a stone,” she said, “but it was what I would call the ‘well-ness factor’. I felt so much better – more centred, relaxed and positive. There was a whole range of benefits to it that I hadn’t considered when I started out.” Sonia, 44, from Shrewsbury, says it Wellbeing Spa

was when she couldn’t go for three weeks that she realised what MBT was doing for her. “It was only then that I fully appreciated all the benefits,” she said. “It leaves me feeling so much calmer. I used to wake up a lot through the night. Now I’m sleeping so much deeper and I wake up refreshed and revitalised. “I would say that above all, I have gained a sense of peace. I think it is having that little bit of me time, twice a week. You sit in that chair, relaxing and listening to the audio knowing it is doing weird and wonderful things for you.”

“Miruji has cured My depression” A head-on traffic collision in 2002 left Judith Morgan, 47, with a trapped nerve and terrible neck pain which interfered with sleep and contributed to stress at work. “When I went for the Miruji trial I suddenly found I could turn my head better than I had been able to in years. I’ve also lost half a stone, although for me, it is less about the weight-loss.” Judith also suffers from hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid), which causes anxiety, stress, irritability and, she believes, also attacks her joints. She says the Miruji therapy has allowed her to come off the tablets. “I felt so good after the first session, I thought ‘I like this’,” she said. “I am

anti-depressant free for the first time in nearly seven years. Judith believes the therapy has changed the way she feels about herself, through tuning in to her subconscious: “It’s the mind coaching that’s so effective. It really is superb. The chair is brilliantly relaxing. Sometimes it’s hard for me to make time to get to Miruji but I’m always so glad when I do. It is a bit of me time and I always feel so much better about myself afterwards. “I tell all my friends – you don’t have to be overweight to benefit. It’s the whole package. I come out feeling utterly refreshed and people notice the difference in me afterwards.

Sports Massage Sports Massage is a combination of deep pressure massage strokes, frictions and stretches to the muscles, tendons and ligaments. It is effective for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculo-skeletal system. Received regularly this may help prevent injuries, which might otherwise be caused by overuse. A constant build-up of tension in the muscles from regular activity may lead to stresses on joints, ligaments, tendons, as well as the muscles themselves. Many people assume that you have to be sporty in order to have a Sports Massage. This is not true! PETS:
THE IMPORTANCE OF BRSHING YOUR DOG’S TEETH
Regularly brushing your dog’s teeth from an early age can prevent serious medical issues such as heart, liver and kidney disease. Don’t expect them to thank you for it though. Most dogs dislike having their teeth brushed, but starting a routine while they are still young will help you both adjust. You’ll need to buy toothpaste specifically for dogs, as the fluoride in human toothpaste is poisonous to them.
Gain their confidence slowly It is a good idea to let them get used to the taste of toothpaste before brushing. They should lick it off your finger to start with, and then off the brush you are going to use. Once accustomed to the taste of their toothpaste and the sight of the brush, it won’t be such a shock when you first brush their teeth properly.
What type of brush? There are various types of toothbrush on the market for your pet – some people prefer to use a ‘finger brush’ when their dog is young, as this type of brush is soft and small, giving you more control when brushing. As your dog grows, however, a larger brush may be more suitable, and these are available in various shapes and sizes. Initially, it is a good idea to only brush your dog’s front teeth – let them get used to that and then gradually try to brush more. Reassuring the dog will help, as will treating them to a game or a walk afterwards. http://uk.pedigree.com/health-and-training/keeping-your-doghealthy/how-to-brush-your-dogs-teeth http://www.cesarsway.com/dog-care/dog-health/7-tips-for-doggiedental-care

Getting the Best If your house is on the market it’s only natural to be excited and keen to hear from your estate agent regularly about how things are going. But agents are busy people - always on the phone or out viewing properties with potential buyers - so how often should you be talking to them? We spoke to Michael Nettleton, director at Nock Deighton estate agents, to ask him for some tips. He said: “People selling their property with us vary greatly in how often they get in touch with us, some are on the phone every other day when others are happy to let us to get on with it. “However, the key to getting the best out of your agent is not how often you speak to them but the quality of the relationship and what you ask them when you do. “I would recommend you give the market time to react to the launch of your property, say four to six weeks, but if nothing much is happening after the initial period - here are some great questions you should be asking them. “How many people have been matched my details? How many recipients were on a mailing list for that price range?
OUT OF YOUR ESTATE AGENT
“Can we change the photographs and analyse the results? Sometimes a fresh set of pictures, taken at a different time of the year, can make all the difference - but it’s important to ask your agent to keep a track of how activity changes. “What did the people who viewed my property go on to buy? This is really interesting - if people are buying a completely different style of house, your marketing is appealing to the wrong people, but if they bought something very similar, you need to work on those finer details to get the sale. “What is happening with properties similar to mine? If comparable properties are getting offers or more viewings than yours - ask what they are doing differently. If you can’t beat them, join them! “What’s your analysis of our online performance? Your agent should be sending you a performance report showing how many people are viewing your house on whichever internet portal it is on (usually Rightmove, OnTheMarket or Zoopla). If they haven’t - ask them why!
Michael Nettleton
“Is the asking price putting people off, or is it something else? The truth is, it’s very difficult to put your finger on why a house isn’t selling, but it is often a combination of subtle things. Having an honest and frank conversation with your agent can go a long way to pushing things forward and getting that magic offer.”

Is Buy To-Let
STILL A GOOD INVESTMENT
credit crunch era, but even when you’ve got a mortgage offer that you’re happy with, you should be constantly looking for ways to improve returns by switching suppliers and cutting costs. It’s likely that your mortgage provider will need 125% of the monthly rental by way of repayment. The extra amount is intended to cover some of the costs of renting out, and provides a degree of reassurance to the lender that their money is safe. Their worry (and yours) is that the property could stand empty for some time, but unfortunately this is one of the inherent risks of being a buy-to-let landlord.
Will you manage the property yourself? Many professional landlords concentrate purely on managing their business. They don’t get involved in the month-to-month management of the property, or dealing with tenant issues – in fact, many landlords never even meet their tenants.
With no sign of improved interest rates for savers, and pension changes that offer more freedom, is buy-to-let still a good option for those wanting to invest? At first glance, the increase in stamp duty and reduction in some tax reliefs for landlords may cast doubt on whether investing in bricksand-mortar is a good idea, but success depends on many factors, not least of which is your commitment to maximising returns.
It’s purely a numbers game, and taking this approach means abandoning any personal preferences with regard to choosing your property. If you decide to hire a letting agent, they will take a percentage of the rent by way of payment. This may seem like a needless expense when you’re willing to do the work yourself, but when you consider how much time and energy is saved in not having to deal with tenant issues it may be money well spent, particularly if you have more than one property.
The inherent risks of buy-to-let Any form of investment is a risk, but with buy-to-let one of the inherent problems is not finding a tenant, or having to deal with troublesome occupants who damage your property.
We take a look at what you need to consider when thinking about property investment. One of the first items on the list should be to clarify your motivation for this type of investment, as it will directly impact on the areas and type of property that you choose.
Having it standing empty will impact severely on returns over the lifetime of your investment, and you may need to take a reduction in rent to contain some of these losses. It’s also easy for costs to spiral, particularly if the property is old and repairs are needed on a regular basis.
Do you want rental yield or long-term capital growth?
Other risks include increases in mortgage interest rates, and the property market in general taking a downward turn.
Are you considering a long-term investment to take advantage of capital growth, or focusing on the potential rental yield of a property? Between 15 and 20 years is a common timescale for property ownership with capital growth in mind, which might fit in nicely with your plans for retirement. On the other hand, investing in a multiple-occupancy student let, for example, could bring in much-needed monthly income. You may be able to make a rental yield of between 5% and 10% if you find a suitable property in a good location, and buy it for the right price. Whether you choose capital growth or rental yield will determine which type of property you buy, so it is worthwhile spending plenty of time considering your end-goal.
Focusing on the figures Buy-to-let can still be a good investment if you’re prepared to put in the time and effort to make it work. This begins with meticulous research to make sure you get the best mortgage deal, find suitable locations and the right style of property for your target market. In other words, you need to make sure as far as possible that the numbers add up. Lending restrictions have made it difficult to find a good mortgage deal in recent years, when compared with the pre-
40
Financial benefits of buy-to-let The beneficial tax reliefs enjoyed on buy-to-let mortgage interest payments are now being limited to the basic rate of income tax. This was previously an attractive part of buy-tolet investing, but they can still be enjoyed if you form a limited company for your property investments. As rates of corporation tax are being reduced to 18% by 2020, for owners of multiple properties at least, this could help to reduce costs. But as always, you need to seek the advice of a professional advisor to maximise the investment returns and minimise your tax bill. It is said that you make your profit when the property is bought rather than when it is sold, so researching the market, understanding the figures, and finding the best buy-to-let mortgage deal will be time well spent. Buying a rental property isn’t the easy option but the rewards are there if you’re prepared to put in the time and effort to make it pay. http://moneyfacts.co.uk/guides/buy-to-let/btl-have-youconsidered-the-investment-risks/

have an excellent culture which makes Lioncourt such an enjoyable and challenging place to work.’
The annual survey of all private companies in the UK has placed Lioncourt Homes in 25th position in the list of the fastest growing companies in the UK, and is 2nd in the Midlands Region.
Neil commented, ‘the whole business is based on our quality approach and everyone in the business is focused on quality of build, quality of design and quality of service to our customers. This quality approach has been recognised by HBF (House Builders Federation) and Lioncourt are holders of the coveted 5 Star Quality Award, one of only 15 developers in the whole of the UK to hold the award.
As the fastest growing house builder in the UK, Lioncourt has grown from a small regional player just a few years ago to one of the largest home builders and land owners in Central England. This impressive growth has seen rapid turnover and profit growth and has involved a near doubling of staff each year, over the past 2 years.
This rapid growth has been achieved whilst focusing on quality and Neil Chandler, Finance Director, also emphasised this as a fundamental part of their success.
With all this recognition what is possibly left for the Company to strive for? Well the response from Colin on this was clear and concise.
Founder executive directors Colin Cole and Neil Chandler, have been behind this growth but they are keen to emphasise that it is the culture, work ethic and expertise of everyone in the Lioncourt team that has made this outstanding growth possible.
He said ‘we are only at the start of the Lioncourt story. We have significant growth planned for the period ahead and we have excellent managers and staff developing throughout the business as part of our succession plans. But for now it is time to reflect and celebrate this latest success.’
Colin Cole, Chief Executive of the Group, said, ‘there is no doubt that the growth of Lioncourt Homes is attributable to the tremendous commitment of the Lioncourt staff who work tirelessly to achieve our growth plans. As a consequence we

Make Room
FOR ROSES
It’s the perfect time of year to plant roses, and there should be a good selection in local garden centres or from specialist rose nurseries. Although roses look good in beds, borders and containers, why not create your own fantasy rose arch or rose-clad arbour?
soil. Although roses quite like fairly heavy soil, for clay soils likely to waterlogging prepare a sizeable area before planting by digging in well rotted manure, garden compost and grit, which also ensures good fertility.
Transform an existing arch or pergola by planting roses now to ensure fabulous colour for many summers to come. Alternatively, create your own using sturdy timber or buy a good quality wooden or metal arch or pergola kit.
Ensure you plant at the correct depth: the swollen graft point slightly above where the roots start protruding should be just above soil level. Once in place, keep your rose well watered during dry conditions, paying particular care over the next 18 months. Apply rose fertiliser and top up the mulch in spring.
Start by deciding whether to use ramblers or climbers to cover your pergola or arch. Ramblers are easier to train but only flower once a year, whereas many climbers have two flowering periods or flower intermittently for months. Many roses are strongly coloured, so ensure that these will look good with adjacent planting and will not clash with nearby painted or treated surfaces such as decking or garden furniture. Perfume is a vital ingredient - walking beneath an arch or pergola laden with perfumed roses on a warm summer’s evening takes some beating! If you get your roses delivered, don’t be put off if they have somewhat lopsided roots, uninspiring woody stems and little else. This is normal, but despite their forlorn appearance they usually establish well. Do try to plant as soon as possible, but if not make sure that you keep the root systems moist by wrapping in thoroughly moistened hessian or by burying the roots temporarily in garden soil. Make your planting hole close to the base of the arch or pergola: a distance of about 30 – 45 cm (12 – 18 in) works well, but keep away from concrete footings or other material located in the
46
If the roots of bare root roses are lopsided and crammed together, spread them out before planting. Soak the roots in water for a couple of hours before prising them apart, prune out any which have been damaged and plant the rose immediately.
Newly purchased roses are unlikely to have much in the way of top growth, but once they get going you will obviously need to train these stems into the arch or pergola, securing them at regular intervals with great care, so that they are not damaged by being buffeted against the arch or pergola during windy weather. I like to use the steel wire with a dense foam covering – strong but soft! Good varieties for planting over pergolas and arches include Veilchenblau ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ (climber), Excelsa ‘Crimson Shower’, Albertine Albericbarbier ‘Golden Showers’, ‘Iceberg’ (climber), Malvern Hills ‘Super Fairy’, ‘Gloire de Dijon’, ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’. Make vegetable growing fun with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. Select the vegetables you’d like to grow at www.pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants will be delivered in May, accompanied by weekly emails packed full of advice and tips. Transform Your Garden
WITH A TIMBER FEATURE
Decking and Pergolas Ltd is owned by Chris Nichols who has recently relocated to Telford from Solihull.
Chris has been transforming gardens for a few years now, having aquired a range of skills from his previous professions. Chris orginally studied in Oxford to become an Architect before lifes rich path led him to leave his chosen professional career many years ago. Following some time working on various reclaimation and heritage sites for the West Mids County Council, as it was then, he was fortunate in adding commercial trading to his experiences, working in the bullion industry in Hockley, Birmingham. Chris ended up working in steel for over 20 years, ultimately becoming the Operations Director of a multinational manufacturing company serving the petrochemical industry. He developed many transferable skills, which he still uses and applies today. When Chris was presented with an opportunity to establish his own business doing work he really enjoyed; designing and building beautiful garden decking and pergolas, he jumped at the opportunity and hasn't looked back since. Decking and pergolas are popular choices for creating a feature within in a garden or landscape. With Chris's expertise he can custom design and build a decking system or pergola to suit any property and its surroundings. The above images show how Chris turned a very boring and untidy corner of garden into an

amazing beautiful and relaxing spot to laze away summer days or entertain your family and friends. A professionally constructed decking system can extend a house into a garden and add value to your property. It also has the ability to enhance a garden visually and provide an outside living area perfect for relaxation and entertaining. There are a wide range of additional extras to choose from including balustrades, pergolas, arbours, archways and privacy screens. Decking is a very effective way of making use of sloping or level ground. With the use of stilts and steps, different levels can be created giving the impression of uniformity and will make a garden much easier to navigate. Chris aims to create timber features that blend beautifully with your home and the garden. Restaurant Review
FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE
TASTE OF PARADISE
rear of 2-4 High St, Newport TF10 7BH
T: 01952 875505
Taste of Paradise Indian restaurant can definitely be described as one of Newport’s hidden gems; the building is tucked away beyond an intriguing Indian styled archway just off the bustling high street. The restaurant has been in Newport for 15 years, which is a testament to its popularity and success in the area. In addition to the dine in restaurant they also offer a popular takeaway service with free delivery offered within a four-mile radius, ideal for those nights when you just can’t face cooking! The restaurant is large and airy with a fresh modern décor, the addition of some clever mood lighting gives the room a relaxed ambience. Parking is readily available either on the high street during quieter periods or on the Co-operative Supermarket car park, which is just behind the building. Like many Indian restaurants the Taste of paradise is unlicensed, so you are welcome to bring your own alcoholic drinks to enjoy with your meal, there is of course a wide selection of soft drinks, teas and coffee available on the menu. On arrival at the restaurant were welcomed by owner Raja and shown to a quiet table near to the bar. We ordered some soft drinks and a couple of poppadoms to enjoy while we looked through the menu. The poppadoms were really fresh
50
and crisp and the accompanying condiments were delicious, they included fresh onion salad, mango chutney, a hot and spicy tamarind sauce and a refreshing mango yoghurt raita. Needless to say both of the poppadoms and most of the sauces were gone by the time we were ready to order. To start my husband Aaron ordered the stuffed pepper with Chicken (£3.95) and I decided to try a vegetarian starter for a change and so went for the spiced potato with garlic mushroom (£2.50). The char-grilled green pepper was filled to the brim with a tasty spiced chicken filling and was served with a fresh side salad. Aaron commented that the chicken filling was tender and delicious and had just the right amount of spice to give it flavour and warmth. The char-grilled green pepper was perfectly cooked and complemented the chicken and spices well. My spiced potato and garlic mushroom starter was scrumptious, the potatoes were perfectly cooked in a thick and rich sauce with plenty of tender garlic mushrooms throughout, it was really moreish and a dish that I would highly recommend and work well either as a starter or a side dish. For mains we just couldn’t decide as there was so much to chose from, so we asked Raja for his recommendation, he told us that the new chicken Rajastani (£9.95) was proving to be very popular and from the description it sounded mouth wateringly good, so we happily opted for that, we also ordered the butter chicken (£6.50), with a portion of egg fried rice (£2.30) and a peshwari naan bread (£2.30).
FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT After a short interlude our main meal was delivered hot and fresh from the kitchen to our table, the presentation of all of the dishes was well thought out and everything smelled incredible. The Chicken Rajastani was indeed a winning recommendation; it came beautifully presented with a dome of fluffy pilau rice, fresh salad and some artistically carved tomatoes to garnish. It was a medium hot, rich red curry with tender strips of tandoori chicken, topped with crunchy matchstick potatoes. This curry was super tasty, it had just the right level of spice to give it some punch without blowing your head off, the chicken was perfectly cooked and the crispy fried potatoes on top were amazing, they were so crisp and crunchy and really added a lovely texture to the dish, it was so good I would even go so far as to say that the Rajastani is my new favourite curry. The Butter chicken was everything a butter chicken should be, mild and creamy with generous chunks of tender chicken tikka in a thick golden sauce. In my opinion Butter Chicken is a great choice for anyone wanting a milder curry, as it still has plenty of flavour without the kick of some of the spicier dishes, this was always my favourite curry when I was a child and this one certainly lived up to expectation! The egg-fried rice was very tasty and made a pleasant change to my usual go-to side order of pilau rice. The peshwari naan bread was just divine; hot, fluffy and fragrant with a sweet coconut, almond and sultana filing, it even came drizzled with honey which I’ve never experienced before, but believe me it really worked! After all of that delicious food we literally had no room left for dessert so we ordered some coffee, which came freshly brewed and served with cream and sugar and was the prefect end to a great meal. We both thoroughly enjoyed our evening at Taste of Paradise, the atmosphere was warm and friendly and the food was seriously good, so next time you are contemplating a curry, please do pay a visit to Newport’s very own hidden gem and experience a taste of paradise for yourself.

Recipe - Cake & Bake PALMIERS These delicious sweet pastries are easy to make using just a sheet of readyrolled puff pastry and caster sugar. Serve with coffee, or sandwich together in pairs with jam and whipped double cream for an indulgent dessert.
Makes approx. 28 Ready in one hour Ingredients: • 1 x 375g pack ready-rolled puff pastry
• 4 tbsp caster sugar
• 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)
1.
.Unroll the puff pastry sheet and trim the edges to a neat rectangle, if necessary. Sprinkle over 2 tbsp of the caster sugar and half the cinnamon (if using). Using a rolling pin, gently roll over the sugar to lightly press it into the pastry.
2. Fold in the long sides of the pastry rectangle halfway towards the centre. Sprinkle over a little more caster sugar and press down with the rolling pin. Fold each long side in again to meet in the centre. 3. Sprinkle with the rest of the sugar and cinnamon (if using), then fold the pastry in half lengthways to form one long strip. Transfer to a board and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. 4. Preheat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas 7. Dampen a large baking sheet by sprinkling with cold water. 5. Cut across the chilled pastry length into about 28 thin slices. Place the slices, cut-side down, on the baking sheet. Flatten each one slightly with the palm of your hand. 6. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, until crisp and golden brown. Turn each slice over with a palette knife halfway through cooking. Transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool.
TIP For savoury palmiers, spread the pastry with a little pesto sauce, then scatter over finely grated Parmesan cheese instead of the sugar.

BEST SMALL CARS If you don’t need to transport your worldly goods with you every time you get in your car you don’t necessarily need a big vehicle. If most of your journeys are made around town and don’t include major motorway mileage, then you may want to consider one of the latest city cars. These won’t cost you the earth to buy or to run, are great to drive and the latest crop are stylish and comfortable for everyday use. Here we’ve picked five of our favourites.
Ford Fiesta - Price: From £9,995 The Fiesta has been the best-selling car in the UK for more months than we can remember – and that’s not without good reason. The latest small Ford has plenty to offer with a well-laid out cabin, fantastic handling that makes even trips to the supermarket exciting and a superb choice of specification.
VW Polo - Price: From £11,100 The VW Polo has an enviable reputation for being a bit of a tough guy – and in the city you need a vehicle that can withstand a few bumps and scrapes. The Polo is solid both inside and out with functional layout and built-to-last materials. Although it’s at the higher end of our price scale, VW’s well-respected residual values and reliability make it a worthy investment.
Honda Jazz - Price: From £11,695 The Honda Jazz might not be everyone’s first choice in the small car sector – but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a look. The Japanese car firm’s reputation for reliability is up there with the best in the world. Couple that with some funky looks, spacious interior and competitive pricing and it may be worth taking a trip to your local Honda dealer to try one out.
Dacia Sandero - Price: From £5,995 Some of you have probably spent more on a holiday than it costs to buy this brand new car – but don’t let this bargain basement price tag put you off. The Dacia Sandero, loved by James May of Top Gear fame, is the real deal, combining back to basics interior and no thrills styling with a functional engine and practical lay out. The fact you’ll get change from £6,000 makes it even more tempting.
Vauxhall Corsa - Price: From £8,995 The Corsa is soon to be replaced by an all-new model which means there are bargains to be had on the current model. A firm favourite with new drivers and pensioners alike, the Corsa might play second fiddle to Ford’s Fiesta in the sales charts, but it’s still worth a look. It’s stylish, has an impressive array of engines to pick from and is packed with plenty of features too.

Life in the Fastlane
A WAKE-UP CALL FOR OLDER DRIVERS?
81-year-old retired florist Martha Harwood from Lancashire was driving home late at night after visiting a friend’s house when she discovered that a once-familiar road layout had changed. Momentarily confused, she took a turning she believed would get her back onto the M65 motorway. Unfortunately she failed to notice the huge ‘No Entry’ sign positioned over the entrance to what was, in fact, an exit slip road. Seconds later Martha found herself driving in the fast lane, going the wrong way down the motorway. She continued for over fifteen miles, forcing a number of terrified drivers to swerve out of her way. It wasn’t until she had almost reached the end of the motorway that police officers pulled her over, turning her car around to face the right direction. They then escorted Martha all the way back home. The pensioner later told police she had been aware she was travelling in the wrong direction, but “just kept going”. Thankfully no one was killed in the incident, although four drivers needed hospital treatment. The fact that no one was seriously hurt makes Martha Harwood’s case quite a rarity. Accidents caused by elderly car users frequently result in injury and death for the drivers and pedestrians involved, and the number of incidents is set to rise in future: by the year 2035 the number of older drivers on our roads will have increased to 21 million. However, the AA insists that despite the obvious concerns, it’s important not to pre-judge someone’s ability on the basis of their age alone, as statistically drivers aged over 60 cause fewer crashes than those in younger age groups. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) is also against setting a maximum age for driving, but RoSPA does suggest that older drivers should undergo formal medical checks during licence renewal. Although it is mandatory to renew your driving licence once you have reached 70 and every three years thereafter, there is currently no legal requirement for a medical certificate: simply declare yourself fit and you’ll be back behind the wheel. In November last year the General Medical Council (GMC) published a public consultation proposing changes to the rules surrounding GP/patient confidentiality. One proposal was that GPs should inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) if a patient continues to use a car after having been diagnosed as medically unfit to drive, with the consequence that they will almost certainly lose their licence. Although you are required by law to tell the DVLA if you have a medical condition that may affect your ability to drive, some individuals are reluctant to do so in case they are forced to give up their car. The new draft guidance from the GMC says doctors must disclose information if there is a need to protect individuals or the wider public from the risks of death or serious harm.
60
However, short of following patients out of the surgery to see if they drive away, doctors have no way of telling if a patient is still using their car and families and communities should continue to remain vigilant. The AA offers some simple tips to reduce risk: • Older people are more easily fatigued so they should avoid long journeys, especially if they are driving after meals or drinking alcohol. • Encourage them to talk to their GP to see if their medical conditions are likely to affect their driving, either now or in future. • Make sure they have regular eye tests. • Ask them to agree to a list of restrictions that might preclude them from driving in the following locations or conditions: »» On busy roads »» In the dark »» In town centres »» When the weather is bad • Older people are sometimes reluctant to take advice from family members: enlist the help of a mutual friend who shares your concerns. • Make sure they are driving the right car. One with larger windows, bigger mirrors and higher seats might improve allround vision. If you have tried everything and still believe that your elderly friend or relative is driving unsafely, it may be time to sit them down for a serious conversation. If they are heavily dependent on using a car, they may need to consider other lifestyle changes, such as moving to a different area. Alternatively, offering regular lifts or providing information about public transport may soften the blow. While it’s hard to tell a person who loves driving that it’s time to stop, it may help to remember that in the event of an accident a frail, older body is more likely to suffer serious injuries. Although it will be a difficult adjustment, this decision is as much for their own good as it is for those unfortunate, innocent road users who may become their victims.

CARE TIPS
Iain Betson goes tyre kicking Having just forked out £450 for three tyres on the car - no it’s not a Reliant Robin; fate being what it is I fully expect the fourth one to go pop in the near future right now I am in a zone of “tyre care awareness”. Sad I know, but if it saves me having to replace tyres on a regular basis then so be it. So here are some nuggets of tyre wisdom I’ve learnt and pass to you: 1. Use the correct pressures, and change them depending upon your load (increase for heavy use, reduce for everyday journeys). Doing this will improve stability, save fuel and prolong the tyre’s life. 2. Tread wear: check the tread wear indicators – raised areas at the base of the grooves of the tread. If the tread is level with the indicator you have only 1.6mm of tread left. Under that and it’s a fine and three points per illegal tyre. 3. Putting nitrogen instead of air in the tyre increases its life and saves fuel as it lessens the rolling resistance by dispersing heat more effectively. 4. Avoid those kerbs: hitting them will damage the tyre side wall, with a cut or bulge raising the risk of a blowout. 5. Potholes: do your best to avoid them safely. Hitting these will damage the tyre and, quite possibly, the wheel too, especially if you have “run-flat” tyres as they have very little give in the sidewall, meaning the wheel takes more punishment. A replacement wheel is a lot more expensive than a tyre. 6. If your car has traction control, changing just one tyre can make the system behave oddly as it receives conflicting information from the different tread depths, and thus grip, on the tyres. In some cases it will even inhibit the car’s performance as it attempts to keep the car safe from what it perceives is a dangerous condition.

The Fiat 500
Fiat’s whizzy runabout may have had a facelift but it still has bags of retro-chic. I heard it first-hand that some weeks the 500 is the only car Fiat dealers sell, and at other times it outsells all other models in their range combined. But who’s surprised really? Since its launch in 2007, Fiat have made 1.5 million 500s. And the reason is it’s simply a fun car to drive. The original reincarnation (‘scuse the pun) drew entirely on the original 1960s Cinquecento’s Italian style. This “remaster”, as Fiat calls it, is no different. Along with the BMW Mini and Vauxhall’s Adam, Fiat has plugged firmly into the “fashion car” sector, appealing to those buyers who like their runabout styled with their own individual and personal touches, but are still part of the chic set. The new version has received both a facelift and a tummy tuck. The sporty Abarth version aside, the 500 is now available in three trim levels, the names of which chime very well with its aimed-for sector: the Pop, Pop Star and Lounge. Three petrol engines provide the go. The mid-range, but tiny, 900cc turbo-charged two-cylinder TwinAir 85bhp version recently secured Fiat the Citycar award from eco-motoring website Next Green Car, but the other two are no gas guzzlers either. A second 105bhp turbo version of the 900cc engine is the most powerful whilst, surprisingly, the lowest powered of the trio is a 1.2 normally-aspirated 4 cylinder variant. 5-speed gearboxes are standard on the two lower powered engines, while the 105bhp engine has a 6-speed box. Standard features include LED running lights, heightadjustable steering wheel, USB and aux-in connections on the stereo, central locking and electric windows. The top of the range Lounge version augments this with, amongst other features, fog lights, rear parking sensors and a touchscreen based entertainment system.

REMASTERING AN ICON
The knowledge: Fiat 500 Price: from £10,890 Top speed: 107mph Fuel Economy: 74.3 mpg (combined cycle) CO2 emissions: 90g/km Where the facelift and the sector positioning really show is in the customisation, where the available combinations take up about three-quarters of the glossy sales catalogue. From wheel size (15”, 16” or 17”) through exterior styling to interior colours and gadgets, the list goes on. The options even extend to the style of 500 badge on the (optional, of course) side protection strips and the colour of the key fob cover! It’s in the driving that the 500 wins and wins again. With its small engines you’d think that the 500 would struggle to beat a snail - but it’s not so. The 85 horse powers of the midspec engine nip the car along to a very respectable 107mph and get it to 60 in 11 seconds. It’s frugal too: none of the three engines gives a combined cycle of less than 60mpg figures helped, no doubt, by being equipped with start/stop technology, which is ideal for the mainly city driving seen by most 500s. I was expecting the engine to be a little on the shaky side, being that it has only two cylinders on-board, but that is not the case - I couldn’t detect any lumpiness at all. After nearly 10 years of production, Fiat have remained wise and maintained both the lines and the size of the 500. Facelifts are sometimes more than cosmetic and can extend to lengthening of the wheelbase or widening of the body. Sure, it’s getting on for twice the size of the Cinquecento, but that didn’t come with airbags and air conditioning. Keeping the size the same means the remastered Fiat 500 is still the fun tippy-toes whizz-about it’s always been.

MOTORS & LEISURE
Living Room There is a subtle but definite shift going on in the way people use and drive their cars. Aids such as lane departure warning, self parking, adaptive cruise control and emergency stop systems are there to make the journey safer. But you’ll also see options in the brochures under the pseudonym of “comfort” or “leisure packs”; Bluetooth phone connectivity, in-car wi-fi and internet radio.
ON WHEELS
All sounds a bit “Joe 90”? After all, didn’t those sci-fi comics of the 1960’s have us all driving auto hover-cars, dressed in two-piece, one-colour leisure suits by now? Well, the 2015 Tokyo motor show saw concept cars with these features from Nissan and Mercedes, the latter being vigorous innovators in the motoring world. Mercedes were first to bring you such things as brakes on all 4 wheels (yes really!), fuel injection, traction control and airbags. Still, they have yet to introduce a range of one-colour two-piece leisure suits.
On average it takes five years for a model to go from drawing board to front drive, so by 2020 expect the family hatchback to be not simply a means of transportation but a place of relaxation too. It’s recognised that we are spending longer in our cars, so the makers are moving towards the car being as much a living as a driving space. Driverless technology is here already, albeit just past the embryonic stage. Soon we will see accident prevention systems as standard including innovative methods to control the car (steering wheels will seem very last year). Also we are likely to find the car thinking for itself, making route choices and driving decisions for you based upon external data, not just from the internet but in the immediate space that surrounds it.

Dividend Taxation A change to the dividend taxation laws is to be implemented from April 2016. Pension and ISA dividends will not be affected by the new regime and will remain free of tax, but the new dividend rules are likely to have an adverse effect on directors and shareholders of small incorporated companies. The new proposals will reportedly bring in an extra £2.54 billion in revenue for the 2016/17 tax year, with smaller amounts continuing to bolster the public purse in future years. The changes are an effort by the government to equalise tax laws for those who run unincorporated businesses.
Here’s a summary of the changes to be introduced • A maximum annual Dividend Allowance of £5,000 is to come into force (after taking the personal allowance into account) • The existing 10% notional Dividend Tax Credit will be scrapped • Dividends over the £5,000 annual limit will be taxed at the following rates:
AND OTHER CHANGES TO TAX LAWS IN 2016/2017 harder for people in business to survive financially. This includes both individual contractors who have incorporated their businesses, and family-run companies. In conjunction with the introduction of auto-enrolment and the new minimum wage, abolishing the 10% Dividend Tax Credit could be the final straw for some small limited companies.
In fact, an online petition has been started, objecting to these new rules. Company directors/shareholders say that the rewards of low dividend taxation compensated for the long hours and risks they took when starting their business, and that their overall contribution to the economy needs to be more widely acknowledged by the government. The Telegraph reports that an additional £6.8 billion in tax will be paid by small business owners in the next five years, and that some are considering putting their business up for sale.
Are there any other changes to UK taxation in the forthcoming financial year? Other announcements made in last year’s Budget include:
>> 7.5% on dividend income in the basic rate band
• Pension tax relief changes
>> 32.5% (for the higher rate band)
Restrictions on pension tax relief for those with an income of £150,000 or more will come into force from April 2016. Currently, higher rate tax payers enjoy 40% tax relief on their pension contributions. A fixed rate of 33% will apply for all in the new tax year, regardless of the rate band they are in.
>> 38.1% (in the additional rate band) People with a low dividend income will see a reduction in their tax bill, but the new measures are likely to hit family-run small businesses the hardest. Any individual in receipt of more than £5,000 in dividends during a tax year will also be required to complete the selfassessment process from April 2016, as the tax on dividends will not be deducted at source.
So why has the Treasury decided to overhaul the current system? The government is attempting to discourage tax-motivated incorporation, which means setting up a business as a limited company simply to enjoy a lower rate of tax on income. In the past, directors/shareholders of a limited company have been able to take a small salary from their business, which attracted enough tax to maintain their entitlement to the state pension. The government’s objection, however, is that company profits are then used to extract a further dividend taxed at the much lower rate of 10%. Additionally, no National Insurance contributions are required on dividend income, and the Treasury felt the need to act to ensure greater equality for those who set up their own business without incorporation. The low taxation rate of 10% on dividend income had been introduced at a time when rates of Corporation Tax were much higher, and at the time, was an attempt to relieve the financial pressures being experienced by directors and shareholders.
Strong objections from the business community With the inherent difficulties facing small businesses, fears have been expressed that the government is making it much

• Savings interest Said to be an acknowledgement of recent poor returns for savers, George Osborne also announced in last year’s budget that savings interest of up to £1,000 will no longer be taxed. He said that around 95% of savers will no longer have to pay tax twice on their savings - once when the money was earned, and again when deposited in their bank account. • Digital tax accounts One of the biggest overhauls of the tax system in recent times, the introduction of digital tax accounts is relevant for anyone who has previously been required to complete a self-assessment tax return. The ‘account’ will be similar to online banking in that details on how much is owed will be available to view at any time, and taxpayers will be able to make payments throughout the financial year rather than meeting a specific deadline. These are all significant changes to taxation laws in the UK, and are set to bring in considerable sums for the Treasury, but the new dividend tax rules seem to be attracting the most concern and criticism. www.itcontracting.com/new-dividend-tax-april-2016/ www.rossmartin.co.uk/directors/tax-efficient-remuneration/1591summer-budget-2015-dividend-tax petition.parliament.uk/petitions/106525 www.gov.uk/government/publications/dividend-allowance-factsheet/ dividend-allowance-factsheet www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/saving/article-3000721/Budget-2015Chancellor-scraps-tax-1-000-savings-income.html www.telegraph.co.uk/news/predictions/money/12049452/pay-morebeat-pensions-tax-changes.html moneyweek.com/the-summer-budget-what-it-means-for-you/

Make the Most They may be small but they can be perfectly formed: the tiniest of kitchen spaces is often extremely efficient – you can wash, slice and cook almost without moving at all. And although the sky’s the limit when it comes to spending on kitchens – even diminuitive ones – if you’re on a shoestring you can create a practical and attractive galley kitchen for very little money, writes Katherine Sorrell. Planning The Room In a small kitchen every centimetre counts, and the first principle of design is the ‘work triangle’ – the movement between the three main areas of activity: cooker, sink and fridge. Each zone should be self-contained, with its own storage and worktop space, but it should also be easy to move between each one. The best way to ensure this is to draw a floor plan with lines connecting each point on the triangle, and avoid placing any obstructions (such as tall cupboards) between them. The theory goes that the most efficient length for each side of the triangle is a doublearm span or about two metres. In practice, however, it is rarely possible to create an absolutely equal triangle, and what matters more is that the three work centres aren’t uncomfortably close or too far apart. In a double galley, keep the sink and cooker on the same side, with the fridge pretty much opposite. In a single galley, you can’t create a triangle at all, but its linear shape means that it’s very easy to use anyway, as long as you don’t make the line too long. Aim to have tall cupboards at one end, then the hob nearby, and the maximum amount of worktop space between the hob and the sink, with the dishwasher next to the sink at the other end. Add a rubbish bin under the sink and, if you have room, add a pull-out larder to store food.
Eating and Entertaining Even in a tiny kitchen, it’s always a good idea to try fit in somewhere to eat and drink. Fold-down tables might work, or perhaps there is room for a small dining table – if it extends for extra guests, so much the better. Or you could add a breakfast bar by forming an ‘L’ shape at the end of a run of worktop, adding a couple of high stools that can tuck underneath when not in use. Bingo! An eat-in kitchen.
OF A SMALL KITCHEN
Choosing Units & Worktops Mixing textures and colours in the kitchen is a growing trend, and top fashion picks at present include metallics, marble and rough, tough industrial accents. Deep worktops and open shelving will update a kitchen of any size, but what matters most in any kitchen is quality. You can find more or less any look at more or less any price - but you do get what you pay for. Check the quality of the carcass: cheaper ones are made from chipboard, sometimes with just hardboard backs, which may be fine if all you want is a budget option. But for a wellused kitchen that you want to last a number of years, opt for plywood or MDF veneer, the thicker the better. Laminate worktops are the budget choice – choose high-pressure rather than low-pressure ones, as they’re more durable. Wooden worktops can also be inexpensive, but avoid ones that are too cheap or too thin, especially if you’re installing them next to a sink, as they’ll just warp and buckle. Splashbacks are often made from the same material as the worktop, though if cost is an issue you could opt for a cheaper alternative, such as ceramic tiles, tongue and groove painted with tough gloss, or a fashionable sheet of clear or coloured acrylic.
Make The Most Of Your Space With These Ideas • Fit wall cupboards that go right up to the ceiling, storing little-used items right at the top • Sliding doors are ideal as they don’t intrude into the room • Magic’ corner cupboards (with special mechanisms that let you get to the stuff at the back) allow you to fit more in • Wall-hung racking systems let you see what you’ve got while still storing it in an organised fashion • Pull-out shelving and slim drawers (eg in the plinth) all add extra storage space • Internal fittings help organise cupboards • When it comes to appliances, choose multi-functional, compact, slimline, built-in and stacking versions • Reflective and/or transparent surfaces and pale colours make the room seem bigger • Base cabinets on legs or recessed plinths allow you to see more floor • Avoid visual confusion by sticking to ultra-plain cabinet fronts with either no handles or very discreet ones • Larger-than-average floor tiles make the floor seem larger

Plan Your Perfect
FAMILY BATHROOM
include as much storage as you can, so all those plastic toys can be popped away quickly when you need a calm, grown-up space. Vanity units can be built under basins, also concealing pipework, and WCs can be placed against false walls which contain both the cistern and some storage space; you can also use wall and floor cupboards, either custom-made or off-thepeg, plus well thought-out conventional storage ideas such as a hinged chest with a padded seat on top and all sorts of shelves, racks, boxes and baskets. Finally, draw all your fittings to the same scale as your floor plan, and cut them out. You can move them around until you find the layout that works best, remembering to allow generous activity space for knees, elbows, drying and so on, around each fitting.
FITTINGS In a bathroom that’s used regularly by all members of the family, young and old, flexibility is key. Opt for a timeless white suite with an easy-clean finish, plus neutral tiles, and you can add bold colours and fun patterns in the form of towels, mats, handles and hooks. Wall-hung fittings are easier to clean around, as well as making the space seem bigger; for small children, a sturdy, portable step will help them reach the loo and basin. For safety around hot water, ensure your taps and shower have an anti-scald device and touch-safe surfaces, and set thermostatic mixers to low temperatures.
FLOORING
Is your bathroom family-friendly? Think layout, fittings, flooring, lighting and all-important storage space – and turn your bathroom into an appealing haven for both children and adults, says Katherine Sorrell. THE SPACE The first question: is your room big enough? If it’s too small for comfort, but there’s a tiny, adjacent WC (common in period properties), consider knocking down the wall in between to combine them into one family-friendly room. Many older properties also have a lot of bedrooms compared to the number of bathrooms, and it may make sense to convert one of the bedrooms into a second bathroom – thus avoiding queues every morning. The least expensive way to overhaul a family bathroom is to keep the fixtures and fittings in the same place: that way you’ll avoid the costs of altering pipe runs. On the other hand, if the layout just isn’t right – perhaps there’s only a bath and you want to create space to add a separate shower – you’ll have to bite the bullet and re-arrange the room. Measure up and draw a plan on graph paper, noting the position of doors and windows, any radiators that you’re going to keep, the soil pipe and any other permanent fixtures. Then decide what fittings you require: a bath, walk-in shower, WC, basin (or two – ideal for busy bathrooms), radiator and/or heated towel rail (make sure it’s big enough for LOTS of towels)… A specially designed shower-bath, wider at one end and with a curved-glass screen, can be a great space-saver, and try to
74
Bathroom floors must be non-slip and easy to clean; most importantly, however, they mustn’t mind getting wet. Carpet is a complete non-starter in a modern family bathroom, and solid wood is risky as it may shrink or warp. If you like the look of timber, however, you may be able to install marine-grade ply, engineered boards, laminate, bamboo or tropical hardwoods. Ceramic tiles are ideal, especially as they work brilliantly with underfloor heating (cosy toes!), while alternatives include linoleum, which has a classic look and is made from environmentally friendly materials, rubber – available in an array of gorgeous colours – and the ever-popular and practical vinyl that can cope with anything kids can throw at it. Literally.
LIGHTING Lighting really makes a difference to the mood of a bathroom and, if possible, it should be planned in the initial design stages. Include good general, overall lighting, perhaps in the form of inset ceiling spotlights or (less expensive) a ceilingmounted track, plus some task lights, by the mirror, for shaving or applying make-up. Clever ideas include: storage units that incorporate lighting; fitting uplighters in flooring; an led colourchanging lamp operated by remote control; adding a colourful light stream to your tap water and even illuminated tiles. You could even consider fitting low-level lighting that comes on automatically when someone enters the room – great for nighttime toilet visits. Remember that when any light fitting is near water, it must be manufactured with suitable protection against splashing – designated by an IP coding of 4 and above.

WHAT DO YOU GET THE GADGET FAN WHO HAS EVERYTHING?
It’s easy to get Valentine’s Day wrong: nothing says “I love you” less than uncomfortable pants in the wrong size, some wilting flowers or whatever chocolates were half price in Tesco. But if your soul mate is a gadget fan, it’s very easy to get Valentine’s Day right. One of the problems of buying presents for gadget fans is that they tend to have the big things already, so for example if they fancied an Apple Watch or a Samsung Galaxy S6 they’ve almost certainly bought it for themselves. But that’s an opportunity rather than a problem, because there are stacks of accessories and add-ons that can enhance what they’ve already got. Take the Apple Watch, for example. There’s a huge range of straps including tanned and coloured leather, metal and fun coloured silicone that can completely transform its looks. Apple’s own ones are fairly nice and predictably expensive, but you don’t need to pay quite so much: metal straps from the likes of Hoco (£48) and leather ones from Nomad (around £70) look and feel fantastic, and having multiple straps means the Watch fits with any outfit from ultra-casual to seriously formal. It’s a similar story with smartphone and tablet cases, where there are some fantastic designs to choose from. A woven Ted Baker case for the iPad Mini is £35, while Pipetto.co.uk’s clever Origami cases are around £30. You’ll find all kinds of household names making phone and tablet cases including Radley, Michael Kors and Aspinal of London, with prices ranging from around £12.50 for a simple Radley iPhone case to £250 for an Aspinal iPad case. Accessories aren’t just about fashion. If your beloved has a smartphone, tablet or laptop they might appreciate some Bluetooth accessories, such as Bluetooth wireless headphones - around £50 for a set of Jabra Move headphones, rising to around £200 for high-end sets from Bose - or wireless speakers, which are great for streaming music from the likes of Spotify or Apple Music at home, in the garden or on the beach when Summer finally returns. We’re big fans of the Bose Soundlink Mini (£169), but you needn’t spend that much to get great sound: Sony’s SRS-X2 is around £60, while JBL’s Flip 2 is about £50 and TDK’s tough Trek Flex is £55 - £69 depending on your choice of colours. If you’d rather give a more traditional gift, technology can still help: the Lastminute.com, Laterooms.com, Expedia.co.uk, Kayak and SkyScanner apps can all help you find the perfect romantic getaway at the right price, while the 5pm and OpenTable apps make it easy to book a restaurant for a romantic night out - although if you’d rather impress by cooking something spectacular at home, celebrity chef apps from the likes of Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson can give you not just recipes but videos on how to prepare the perfect Valentine dinner. Tech can even help if you don’t currently have someone to share Valentine’s day with: online matchmaking services such as Match.com have smartphone and tablet apps to help you find Miss or Mr Right, while famous apps such as Tinder (for everyone) and Grindr (for gay or bisexual men) use location awareness to help you find potential partners near you. If that sounds a little bit scary, apps such as Hitch enable friends to play matchmaker, limiting the pool of potential suitors to people your friends already know.

Valentine’s Cards to Candle Dipping Go along to Blists Hill Victorian Town during the February school half-term holidays from 13th to 21st February and take part in a variety of fun, drop-in activities including printing a hand-made Valentine’s card, candle dipping, making miniature roof tiles and find out more about the history of sweets. The Valentine’s industry boomed during Victorian times when more and more people sent love notes, poems and cards to their sweet heart as paper and printing became cheaper and 1840 saw the establishment of the Penny Post. Over the weekend of Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th February you can typeset and print a Valentine’s card for someone you love using Victorian techniques in the Town’s Goods Shed. Every day over the holidays you’ll also be able to discover more about the history of sweets and

Each tile will be personally decorated using alphabet stamps and hand prints. A variety of other activities will also be on offer throughout the half-term holiday. Choose from making striped candles by dipping into brightly coloured liquid wax; building a wall with mini-bricks using different ‘brick bonds’ to discover which is the strongest and colouring-in pictures of Victorian scenes. All drop-in sessions take place from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 3.30pm with activities varying day-to-day; candles and roof tiles also carry a small extra charge in addition to the museum entrance fee. Local Writer
LAUNCHES HER DEBUT CHILDREN'S FICTION BOOK
Would your child like to read a riveting horsey tale about friendship, making memories, and finding yourself at a sun-soaked, sea-tossed riding school? Then this is the book for them. Donnington local, South-African native, and mum-of-one Myra King has just launched her début children’s fiction book, Apley Towers: The Lost Kodas. The first book in the Apley Towers series for boys and girls aged 9+, The Lost Kodas follows the adventures of Kaela Willoughby and her friends at the Apley Towers riding school. According to Myra King: “Apley Towers is about girls who have grown up together and reach their teenage years to discover that they are going in different directions. The series is a dedication to the last great adventure with your childhood friends.” Just like the book characters, Myra spent her childhood days in the saddle in South Africa until a serious fall at the age of 19. After the accident, she took to writing and used her own riding experiences as inspiration.
Although Apley Towers lies over 7,000 miles away in the fictitious town of Port St. Christopher on the coast of the Indian Ocean, the riding school couldn’t be more familiar to the Telford natives. Apley Woods and the village of Apley inspired Myra when she first arrived in the UK. “The moment I set foot in Apley Woods, I knew I had found one of those truly magical places that poets spend all their lives searching for. I had to make it immortal.” In just a couple of weeks, Myra will be launching a box set of the first three books in the Apley series. To celebrate this release, we will be giving away a copy of the first book in the series.
TO WIN A COPY Please email us telling us the title of the new book, along with your name and address. Email: fleur@inandaroundmagazine.co.uk (please put Myra King in the subject) Closing date: 28-2-16

MCM Midlands 13TH Comic Con! FEBRUARY
Notes from your local Muxton Councillor
The planning applications for the new play areas and outdoor gym in Muxton have been submitted following the public consultation. These projects are being paid for with money from the builders that have completed the new houses on Marshbrook Way, as part of their planning permission.
be published. In Muxton, little has altered with the large site of 750 houses straddling the A518 between Wellington Road and The Humbers. Fortunately Breton Park will not be completely surrounded by housing and the ‘Lilleshall Gap’ will ensure that there is green space between Muxton and Lilleshall. The greatest worry is the effect on the local road network and infrastructure especially with the expansion of MOD Donnington. It seems 2016 will be dominated by planning issues just like 2015 was!
The final version of the draft local plan is soon to

Cllr Nigel Dugmore
By the time you read this the Muxton Lane planning appeal regarding the Gladman development will have taken place, and we now await the planning inspectors decision. The result will be of interest to Wellington residents as the appeal against the refusal of the Haygate Fields development is due to be heard in February. Hopefully common sense will prevail.

Books
FOR MOTHER'S DAY
It’s not always easy to get five minutes to yourself when you’re a mum, particularly if you have young children demanding your attention. So if you’re looking for a gift this Mother’s Day, why not combine a book with the promise of free time? Take the kids to the park for a couple of hours, plough your way through the ironing pile, or make her dinner, so that mum can collapse on the sofa to read in peace.
Neal’s Yard Beauty Book – Susan Curtis, Fran Johnson and Pat Thomas A fantastic resource for anyone who’s interested in skincare and make-up, the Beauty Book provides a wealth of advice on everything from treating dry skin to make-up application. The benefits of a huge range of ingredients are listed, from almond oil to black pepper, and there are step-by-step recipes for making a wide range of beauty products, including bath soaks, massage oils, cleansers and moisturisers.
The Happiness Project One-Sentence Journal for Mothers – Gretchen Rubin
According to Yes – Dawn French Rosie Kitto is one of those characters it’s pretty much impossible not to like. Ever optimistic, slightly eccentric and warm-hearted to boot, primary teacher Rosie sets off from England to work as a nanny for the rigidly upper-class Wilder-Binghams in Manhattan. While there, she helps them to learn to stop living by their social conventions, and start saying yes to new possibilities. At times funny, at times poignant, and with a fair few sex scenes to liven things up, According to Yes is an easy, light-hearted read that just may leave you questioning some of your own conventions.
While it can seem that the days of sleep deprivation and explosive nappies will never end, children grow up pretty quickly. This lovely journal asks mums to just write one or two sentences each day, about their children, work, or life in general. It’s set out for one date per page, but with room for five years’ of memories, so the diarist can then look back to see what thought was top of their mind that day a few years ago. Each page also has a reflective quote from Rubin, which are well worth a read in themselves.
The Secret Life of a Slummy Mummy – Fiona Neill
Dear Mum, From You To Me
Eating Well Made Easy – Lorraine Pascale
We’ll admit, this is as much of a gift to you as it is to her. Unlike a normal journal, Dear Mum, From You To Me uses prompts to help your mum record her memories. The idea is that she’ll pass the book back to you when she’s finished writing in it, so that you can get to know her better and have a record of her life to treasure. Some of the prompts are great conversation starters; not only will you learn more about your mum, but you’ll have an awful lot to talk about.
As a Newsnight Producer, Lucy Sweeney had it all under control, but her life as a stay-at-home mum is anything but orderly. From trying to dodge the yummy mummies and alpha mums at the school gates, to fantasising about Sexy Domesticated Dad, Lucy bounces from one hilarious mishap to the next. A great gift for mums of young children who sometimes wonder if everyone else’s life is quite as chaotic as their own.
If mum’s harking after a new cookery book this Mother’s Day, Lorraine Pascal’s latest endeavour should be top of your shopping list. While it focuses on healthy eating, these recipes are far from bland. They’re also (as the name implies) straightforward to follow and use ingredients you can pick up from your local shop. Most can be prepared pretty quickly, although there are some more time-consuming recipes for when the mood suits. Recipes include Sichuan Bang Bang Chicken, Mushroom and Chestnut Lancashire Hotpot, and No-Cook Chocolate Espresso Cheesecake Squares.

Kitchen Recipe
Take some... Traditional values and service Established in 2003, The Kitchen Depot is a family-owned and run business that remains true to our founding values of honesty, integrity and sheer professionalism. We take immense pride in our reputation for service and commitment to our customers, with more than half of our business coming from customer recommendations to their family and friends.
...add a dash of… Quality and Value
All of our kitchens are manufactured to an exceptionally high German specification, on site, in our own factory and by our own people. That way, we have total control over the product quality, the production timescales AND the manufacturing costs. With no middle-man – you buy direct and we are able to pass these time and cost savings directly onto our customers.
…then a big chunk of…
Ownership and Responsibility
Unusual in this insincere world, admittedly. But we mean it. We are totally committed to providing you with the best kitchen, at the best price, installed with the highest level of service and professionalism. And on the exceptionally rare occasion that something could have been done better – we hold our hands up – and put it right. Fast. No fuss. No hassle. No argument. Just sorted.
...a soupçon of…Harmony At The Kitchen Depot, we know that we are only as good as our people. They ARE The Kitchen Depot brand. That’s why we look after our staff every bit as well as we look after our customers. Because we know that happy workers, pulling together in harmony, make for happy customers.
