This month we are celebrating our 12th Year in business as the very first In and Around Magazine was produced back in February 2005. The magazine has grown and changed a lot since that very first issue. Although the magazine has changed, the ethos behind it hasn't - the magazine was started to help local residents find local businesses in this area and over the years it has helped many businesses to grow with the responses they have had from their advertising and the support from local residents has been amazing; thank you!!! Please continue to support our LOCAL businesses by using their services where possible.

Hypnotherapy

A POWERFUL EXPERIENCE Hypnotherapy is widely used for many ailments and the process itself aims to alter the client’s state of consciousness in a way that relaxes the conscious part of the mind. Whilst the client relaxes, suggestions are made by the therapist and the subconscious takes the suggestions that it needs and puts them in place. Preconceptions about hypnotherapy are that the client is asleep and that the therapist can make them do pretty much anything they like. Most people think of stage hypnosis which may give them this opinion. However, this is completely untrue. The actual process is extremely relaxing. The client is completely aware of everything that is being said by the therapist and is in complete control at all times. In fact, the therapist cannot make the client do anything they do not want to do. Should the client want to stop the session at any time they can just simply open their eyes and be completely back to full awareness. At Reflective Hypnotherapy I can help with many types of therapy but I specialise in Anxiety. Anxiety is extremely unpleasant and life debilitating. By discovering the initial sensitizing event I can help clients deal with their past and help manage any anxiety in the future. If you feel hypnotherapy may help you then call me for a free inital consultation and I will access your needs, you can contact me on 07484 262935.

Whether you are suffering with anxiety or need help with a phobia, I will personalise a script individual to each client depending on their need. The services that I offer include help with:

Eating Disorders Eating disorders affect over 725,000 people in the UK and one in five of those most seriously affected die prematurely through suicide or physical consequences. That’s why it’s essential we’re all aware of the dangers of eating disorders and our susceptibility to them.

Forget the stereotypical teenage girl starving herself. There are several different eating disorders that can affect people of any age, gender or ethnicity.

What Causes Eating Disorders?

Often a combination of genetic, psychological, environmental, social and biological factors seems responsible, although the latest research indicates biology has a bigger influence than previously believed. Identified ‘risk factors’ are: • Suffering sexual or emotional abuse. • Experiencing criticism for weight, looks, body shape or eating habits. • Suffering bereavement. • Periods of intense stress (at home, school or work etc.). • Family history of addiction, depression or eating disorders. • Preoccupation with body shape. • External pressure to be thin from society or for a career/hobby, e.g. dancing, sports, modelling. • Underlying traits/mental health issues such as anxiety, low self-esteem, perfectionism or an obsessive personality. • Relationship issues.

Types of Eating Disorder Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia sufferers are preoccupied with keeping their weight as low as possible by excessive exercise and/or starving themselves.

Bulimia Bulimia sufferers alternate between binge eating and then purging (emptying their stomach by inducing vomiting or emptying their bowels by using laxatives). Bulimia is around two to three times more common than anorexia nervosa, and 90% of sufferers are female. It usually develops at around 18 or 19. Binge eating disorder (BED) BED sufferers feel compelled to eat large amounts of food very rapidly. It affects both sexes equally and usually develops between the ages of 30 and 40. Because it’s difficult to define binge eating, it’s hard to assess sufferer numbers, but it’s estimated to affect around 5% of adults. Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS) Some people, particularly younger sufferers, may have some, but not all, of the symptoms of a specific eating disorder and will be given an EDNOS diagnosis.

agreed criteria to diagnose eating disorders, normally using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or International Classification of Diseases (ICD). They will ask patients about their weight, self-image and relationship with food. But how do you know when someone needs to be referred for diagnosis? Warning Signs Often, people with an eating disorder will be in denial or try to hide their symptoms, but watch for them: • Skipping meals or claiming they’ve already eaten, or plan to eat when they’re out. • Only eating tiny or very low-calorie meals. • Believing they’re fat when they’re a healthy weight or underweight. • Repeatedly weighing themselves or studying themselves in the mirror. • Cooking large meals for others yet eating little themselves. • Refusing to eat in public or becoming stressed when they do. • Using ‘pro-anorexia’ websites. If you suspect you or someone else you know may be developing eating disorder, it’s important to get professional help immediately.

Treatment of Eating Disorders

Rapid treatment increases the chance of a full recovery and minimises the impact on the patient’s body, life, relationships, job or education. However, finding the right treatment can take some time. They may be suffering from more than one eating disorder, and symptoms may change while they’re recovering. A desire to overcome the condition and the support of those around them are vital. Their physical health will be monitored while the underlying causes of their disorder are treated. This may involve:

Around 1 in 250 women and 1 in 2,000 men will experience anorexia nervosa at some point. Although people usually develop the condition at around 16 or 17, it can occur as early as 7 years old. In younger children, it’s more prevalent in boys.

Diagnosing Eating Disorders

AWARENESS WEEK

internationally

• Using self-help manuals and books, possibly under the guidance of a healthcare professional. • Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), aiming to change their thinking and in turn, their behaviour. • Interpersonal psychotherapy: a talking therapy that focuses on relationship issues. • Dietary counselling. • Psychodynamic therapy or cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), focusing on how their personality and life experiences influence their thoughts, relationships and behaviour. • Family therapy, focusing on how the eating disorder has affected them and their family. • Medication: often, antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are used to treat bulimia or binge eating.

Tendon Pain

Tendons are the structure which attaches muscle to bone. They are made up of tough bands of dense connective tissue or collagen. Tendon pain can be a problem for all ages whether you are sporty or more sedentary. For long periods it was thought that tendon pain was due to inflammation and so whenever a patient presented with tendon pain it was diagnosed as tendonitis meaning inflamed tendon. This diagnosis although does exist, has been shown to be less prevalent and over the years through research the tendonitis diagnosis is now more likely to be a degenerate more chronic problem called a tendinopathy or tendonisis. Most common areas are the Achilles tendon and tendons around the elbow termed golfers elbow and tennis elbow. Tendon problems are thought to develop through overload. Overload is any loading activity that causes pain and discomfort in the tendon. This could be biomechanical, (the way we move) or it could be the amount of the activity we do. So whether you are increasing weights in the gym, increasing your mileage on a run or loading the tendons in the arm when painting, these can all stimulate tendon pain. If you then add repetitive loading over a period of time, then this can lead to tendon pain. Treatment for this is basically rest from the activity to reduce the overload and depending on what stage the majority of tendon problems can be treated with a form of exercise called

eccentric loading which helps to organise the collagen fibres within the tendon as well as effecting abnormal blood flow. It is important to correct any biomechanical issues so gait analysis or work station assessment can be useful to eliminate the overload. Soft tissue work in the early stages as well as acupuncture can be useful and a functional strengthening programme as well as a return to activity programme should help. The majority of tendon problems can be managed by all our physiotherapists so if you feel you may have a problem feel free to call for some free advice. Ovarian Cancer

AWARENESS MONTH Previous breast cancer - Risk is up to double in women who’ve had breast cancer and even higher if their breast cancer diagnosis was before age 40. Being infertile or having fertility treatment Some studies indicate that infertility raises risk, but fertility treatments are no longer believed to do so. There does seem to be an increased risk of borderline ovarian tumours in infertile women treated with IVF. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) - Less than 1% of ovarian cancers are linked to HRT. Being overweight or tall - A BMI of 28 or over increases risk in premenopausal women but has no effect on risk in postmenopausal women. Taller women also have a higher risk.

Around 7,300 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the UK each year and less than half are alive five years later, often due to late diagnosis. Yet early diagnosis can increase the five-year survival rate to over 90%. Unfortunately, the symptoms of early stage ovarian cancer can be mild and easily mistaken for symptoms of other conditions, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). That’s why Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, occurring every March, is so important.

Protecting Yourself from Ovarian Cancer

There are a few factors shown to reduce ovarian cancer risk. These are: • Taking the contraceptive pill – the longer you take it, the more protection it offers. Protection lasts for at least 30 years after you stop. • Having children – each child lowers your risk. • Breastfeeding – the longer you breastfeed, the higher the protection. • Having your tubes tied (sterilisation).

Types of ovarian cancer

Epithelial ovarian cancer - About 90% of ovarian tumours are epithelial (starting in the layer covering the ovary). Primary peritoneal carcinoma - A few ovarian cancers are primary peritoneal carcinomas, which develop from the membrane around abdominal organs. Germ cell and other rare ovarian tumours - Around 1 to 2% of ovarian cancers are germ cell cancers, formed in the egg making cells of the ovary. Benign forms of germ cell tumour also exist, sometimes called dermoid cysts or mature teratoma. Rare stromal tumours and sarcomas can also affect the ovary. Borderline ovarian tumours - Borderline ovarian tumours do not grow into the supportive tissue of the ovary (the stroma) and grow slowly. Abnormal cells can sometimes break away and settle elsewhere in the body, usually the abdomen, but do not usually grow into the underlying tissue.

Risk Factors

Increasing age - Most ovarian cancer sufferers are postmenopause. Faulty genes - Between 5 and 15% of ovarian cancers are thought to be caused by an inherited faulty gene, including BRCA1 and BRCA2, which also increase the risk of breast cancer.

12

Endometriosis Using talc - Using talcum powder between your legs is thought to increase ovarian cancer risk due to its irritant effect. Smoking - The longer you’ve smoked, the greater the risk increase for certain ovarian cancers. Diet factors - here is no definitive evidence on the effect of diet on ovarian cancer risk, although some studies suggest a high fat diet may increase it.

Symptoms

Ovarian cancer symptoms aren’t always easy to identify and may be easily mistaken for the symptoms of conditions such as IBS or PMS in the early stages. However, if symptoms are new, severe, frequent or persistent (occurring most days for three weeks or more), you should see your GP immediately, although often, a less serious condition is to blame. Look out for: • Abdominal swelling and persistent bloating. • Persistent pelvic and abdominal pain. • Difficulty eating, nausea and feeling full unusually quickly. • Back pain. • Needing to urinate more frequently. • Pain during sex. Remember that ovarian cancer is rare in women under 40, but that you should be particularly cautious if you are over 50 or have a family history of breast or ovarian cancer.

Diagnosis

Your GP may do some tests themselves or refer you straight to a specialist. You will be examined externally and internally to check for any lumps or swelling and will then have an abdominal or transvaginal ultrasound scan. They’ll also do a blood test for CA125, a protein that’s elevated in half of women with early stage ovarian cancer and 90% of women with advanced ovarian cancer (although other pelvic conditions and pregnancy can cause elevated levels too). They may also order a CT or MRI scan. However, sometimes it’s impossible to diagnose ovarian cancer definitively without surgery.

Treatment

Most women with ovarian cancer will require surgery. If your cancer is diagnosed early enough, you may only need the affected ovary and attached fallopian tube removed. More advanced cancers may need more extensive surgery, and chemotherapy may be used before and after to treat cancerous cells and reduce the risk of reoccurrence.

PROPERTY

@ Lettings

with Dawn Clarke

Preparing Your House for Let So you have taken the decision to invest in a property and are getting ready to put it on the market for letting - what next? The way you furnish and prepare your house or flat can make a big difference in how quickly it gets snapped up by tenants. Dawn Clarke, head of property management and lettings at Nock Deighton, has more than 20 years’ experience of letting property, so she knows what works and what doesn’t. Here are her tips for making your investment the perfect rental property - both for your tenants and you as a landlord.

Floor coverings - we think it’s advisable to opt for neutralcoloured carpets throughout the property, apart from bathrooms the kitchen of course. Go for medium quality, hard-wearing carpets with stain resistance and underlay. Curtains/blinds - these are not an absolute deal-breaker, but we generally find that properties with blinds or curtains already fitted will let quicker. Appliances - a cooker is advisable, but no other appliances are required. Fixtures and fittings - to avoid tenants drilling holes in walls, it is advisable to provide

permanent, essential fixtures such as coat hooks, bathroom mirrors and cabinets, towel rails and toilet roll holders. Door stops - check where these might be needed and install if possible. Gardens - prepare ahead with a low-maintenance garden with somewhere to sit. If the property is suitable for a family then a lawned area is ideal - but it is also advisable to ensure there is somewhere for tenants to keep their lawn mower if there is no garage.

Gardening

HOW TO HEDGE

There is nothing better than a living boundary around or within your garden - bricks and fencing are all very well, but as far as lifting your spirits and keeping wildlife happy, it is difficult to beat a hedge. Hedges can take on many guises – they can look smart or informal, be neat and compact or thicker and sturdier, evergreen or deciduous and, if you want you can even include some hedging with pretty flowers. The options are many, the potential is huge - and now is an ideal time to plant a new hedge. First, prepare the area in the same way you would for any other long-term planting: fork the soil over thoroughly, removing large stones, debris and pernicious weeds. This will eliminate anything that might make establishment tricky or subsequently reduce hedge growth. This preparation also helps to break up any compaction and to aerate the soil, making it a better place for plant roots. If the soil is either very sandy and light or very heavy with clay, then fork in well-rotted garden compost, manure or proprietary compost, as this will help to improve the soil’s texture and its ability to hold moisture and nutrients to just the right extent. At the same time incorporate a complete fertilizer. A young hedge will not create a perfect barrier for the first few years, so if you anticipate problems with next door’s pets or children breaking through you may initially need to use a less attractive barrier such as galvanized stock fencing. Don’t be tempted to plant right up against an existing fence, as the plants simply won’t grow well. At this time of year, when hedging plants grow very little or not at all, you can create a hedge very effectively using ‘bare-root’ plants, but if you want to plant a hedge at any other time you will need container-grown plants. Small pot-grown conifers, for instance, will have well-established roots and should thrive. If using pot-grown plants, carefully remove each plant from its pot just before planting, having watered them thoroughly first if the compost is dry. The roots should not be too tightly packed in the pot, but if they are, tease them out firmly before planting. If you’re using bare-root plants, make sure that you’re ready to plant them as soon as they are delivered and that the soil is also ready and waiting. It is essential to space the plants correctly to achieve the desired effect, and to make sure that you plant them properly if they are to get off to a good start and establish well. Once out of the pot, position the plant in the prepared soil, making sure that it is at the same depth as it was in the pot. If you’re using bare-root plants then make sure that only the roots are beneath the soil. If planted too deeply the plants will suffer and may even die; if planted too shallowly they will be more prone to drying out. Firm the soil around each so that it is in good contact with the roots. Hedging plants generally need a spacing of about 30-45cm. For a much thicker or denser hedge it is often worth planting them 45cm apart, but using two parallel rows of plants, positioned so that the planting is staggered like bricks in a wall. Once the whole hedge is planted, water the soil thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots and so allow the plants

20

to establish. On windy sites or with larger plants it may be worth using small, temporary stakes such as bamboo canes to stabilise the plants. For the hedge to grow well, it is essential that you keep it well watered, especially during dry or windy weather. The first 18 months is the most vital period. Some great hedging plants: • Yew - perfect for a formal, super-smart evergreen hedge. • Thuja - makes a stunning conifer hedge for year round colour, and is not too inclined to be rampant! • Beech - a deciduous plant that gives a good effect for much of the year because the gingery brown autumn leaves often last well. Both purple and green-leafed forms. • Hornbeam - similar to beech but with few leaves held over winter and more prone to mildew. Great as a neatly clipped hedge. • Cypress – the ‘Leyland Cypress’ is notorious, but kept well clipped and cut back regularly this does actually make a great hedge. • Pyracantha - a very spiny evergreen plant excellent for keeping out unwelcome visitors, with pretty creamy-white flowers and red-orange or yellow berries. • Privet - the classic town hedge, which looks great neatly clipped and has evergreen leaves that make a good foil for nearby flowers. • Euonymus (pictured) - a useful evergreen with many forms, some variegated green and cream, others green and yellow. • Hawthorn - deciduous and potentially thorny too, perfect as an ingredient of a ‘native’ hedge and good for wildlife. • Blackthorn - deciduous and very thorny, great for ‘native’ hedging and wildlife, with pretty white flowers followed by sloes - ideal for sloe gin drinkers but can easily get too vigorous! Time to Hang Up

THOSE GARDENING GLOVES

descriptions or simply give the job titles without adding any detail. Aim to write one or two pages and then edit it down to prioritise your most recent and relevant details. Build up your confidence There are many different ways to brush up the knowledge and skills you need to do your job. If you are returning to the same role, your old employer may be able to offer you an inhouse training course. Otherwise, you can search for information online, visit your library or community centre or sign up to courses at your local adult education college. Talking to previous work colleagues can also be reassuring, particularly if they can guide you towards sources of information that will help you catch up.

So you’ve cleaned the car, sorted out your desk drawers, completed a couple of Sudoku puzzles and watched “Homes Under the Hammer” on telly. This afternoon you’re going to potter round the garden and tomorrow you’ll pop round to a neighbour for a cup of coffee and a chat … For some, retirement is a blissful release from the pressures of work. Many retired people are more than happy to swap their job for a more relaxed existence: free to pursue interests they didn’t have time for when they were in full employment. However, if you are now several months or years into your retirement and you are feeling bored, restless and discontented, it may be time to consider going back to work. A law was passed in 2011 preventing the automatic dismissal of employees at retirement age, and nowadays around 1.5 million people in the UK work beyond the state pension age of 65. Recent research by the USA’s Oregon State University even suggests that people who work beyond that age could lengthen their lives, by staying more active and engaged. So what do you need to consider if you are planning to return to work? Get your CV in order If you haven’t updated your CV for a while, you’ll find the latest advice on style, content and layout online. It is important to tailor your skills, qualities and achievements to the job for which you are applying. Try to focus your CV to match the job brief’s requirements: for example, if you were once the CEO of a company and you’re now applying to work on a checkout in a garden centre, you could emphasise your ‘people skills’ rather than drawing attention to your leadership qualities. There is no need to list all the steps on your career ladder: just include the highlights. Compress earlier roles into short

24

Building up your inner confidence is just as important as refreshing your practical skills. If you are returning to the job market after a break, go over your past achievements then make a list of all the positive qualities that helped you reach your goals (don’t ignore the ‘softer’ skills, such as being a good listener). The same qualities can be successfully transferred to a new job role. Treat yourself to a new hairstyle, new tie or new shoes in preparation for those interviews. If you’ve been absent from the social scene for a while, make an effort to put yourself in situations where you are likely to meet people, whether that’s a trip to the pub or volunteering to clean up a local beach. Learn about tax and National Insurance requirements Once you reach state pension age, you no longer need to pay National Insurance. You should provide your employer with proof of your age and check your first few payslips to ensure that National Insurance contributions are no longer being deducted. If you are working and receiving the state pension, your pension payments will be counted as income and will therefore be taxable in the same way as your earnings and any savings income you receive. Some workers fear that automatic enrolment on to their new employer’s workplace pension scheme will affect pensions they are already receiving. Tony Attubato of the Pensions Advisory Service says: “It is possible to save in a pension plan while receiving a pension from another. There will generally be no tax consequences of doing this and you will still enjoy tax relief on the contributions you pay.” On 6 September last year, the workplace equality think tank Business in the Community published a report entitled Age in the Workplace. It concluded that keeping older professionals in employment “will retain highly-desired skillsets, maintain a stronger workplace culture and provide growth opportunities for businesses of all sizes”. So if you’ve been languishing at home, feeling under-used and under-valued, it’s time to put aside those puzzles and hang up your gardening gloves. The experts agree there’s no reason why you shouldn’t get back to work.

Velvet

UNDERGROUND solution AND I’ve seen gardens where it really does seem to work. Similarly, you can try plunging glass bottles into the soil so that just the neck is protruding. As the wind whistles over the mouth of the bottle the noise and vibrations created may also discourage moles. Very smelly substances can work against moles. It is possible to buy mole smokes which seem to work, in the short term at least. These are rather like fireworks and are inserted into the run where the smoke they produce is unpleasant to the moles. Unfortunately, however, with these and indeed most other smelly deterrents, it is likely that once the smell has subsided the mole will return.

They may be known as ‘velvet coated gentlemen’, but believe me if you have a problem with moles in your garden, it is highly unlikely that you will be inclined to call them anything quite so polite! For years I thought people were over-reacting when moles appeared, but having now come across them in great numbers in my own garden, I too have started to have some rather unfriendly thoughts. So what can you do if all of a sudden your lawn becomes decorated with mounds of finely turned soil, or if plants in your beds and borders suddenly start to disappear beneath soil level as subsidence occurs within the flowerbed, or an entire row of vegetables is excavated from below? Moles can do a lot of damage to a lawn, largely because that fine soil acts as an excellent seedbed for weeds and is also inclined to make the surface of the lawn rather slippery. If their runs go beneath your lawn or, worse still, beneath flowers in a flowerbed or vegetable plants in your vegetable plot or allotment, then because they tunnel quite close to or in amongst the plant roots, they can occasionally cause the plants to suffer from drought because the soil is no longer in contact with the roots. Often, when the tunnels collapse subsidence occurs, everything starts to topple inwards, and plants can literally fall over. Moles can sometimes be deterred by high-pitched sounds or vibrations. To this end you could try inserting children’s windmills over the mole infested areas, as the vibration that passes down these into the soil is often said to send moles scampering away. It is an inexpensive and relatively decorative

26

Traps are available from some garden centres or online stores. In order for these to be effective you must set them carefully, and because the moles are very aware of human scent it is essential that you wear gloves when setting them up, so you never actually touch the trap with your hands. The trap needs to be correctly set or else there is a risk that the mole could suffer a lot before it dies. Some gardeners find traps work well but I must admit I know many who have found that they don’t seem to do the job, as it is very difficult for a non-expert trap setter to get it right! Perhaps the most effective means of control is to hire in help by employing a mole catcher. Many of these specialists have worked with moles for many years and are adept at trapping them. Since they often charge only on the basis of moles caught, it need not be too expensive a process either. Moles do eventually decide to go elsewhere, and although this does not imply that your garden will then remain free of moles, if the problem has been very bad one year it may not be quite so severe the next. It is sometimes said that the plant caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyrus) will deter moles. I have never found that this has any effect whatsoever, but it does seem to work for some gardeners and as the plants are fairly attractive it is worth giving it a try! Some gardeners report success with ultrasonic devices that can be inserted into the ground. Once again, I am afraid that it seems the majority of you find these ineffective and indeed I will never forget once seeing a molehill which appeared directly around the base of one of these gadgets in a friend’s garden - so they are not a method I recommend. If all else fails, and attempting to look at this problem in a positive light, it is worth bearing in mind that incredibly finely turned soil can be useful and many gardeners I know, including the wonderful ‘grandfather of gardening’ Geoffrey Smith, used the soil as a medium in which to grow an excellent crop of seedlings! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com to buy gorgeous UK grown vegetable plants accompanied by weekly advice emails from Pippa, or to peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, fleece jackets for plants, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Invaluable

Planning some changes to your home? Interiors expert Katherine Sorrell has some handy hints… Living rooms

• To help plan where to place your furniture, draw a scale plan of your room and cut out mini sofas, chairs and other furniture. Move them around until you find the right positions. Life-sized cardboard cut-outs can also be a great help. • The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are perfect for creating extra storage. A combination of cupboards at the bottom and shelving above works really well. • To let maximum light into the room, fit a pole or track that overhangs far enough each on side of the window to allow the curtains to be drawn right back. Bear in mind that very full, thick curtains need more ‘stack back’ space than light, thin ones.

DECORATING TIPS to redecorate every few years, keep the walls, floors and major items of furniture relatively neutral, just changing accessories, such as rugs, cushion covers, bean bags, blinds and lamp shades, as necessary. • Add interest to boring walls by covering them with blackboard paint, magnetic wallpaper, peg board, cork tiles, blown-up digital images, maps, flags or wall stickers. • A high-level bed is great for providing extra space beneath for study, play or storage. • Fit a dimmer switch so you can adjust the light level from bright for playing or reading to soft and calm at bedtime. • Storage is all-important. Felt tips and paint brushes can be kept in old baby-milk tins, or any other large, washed-up tin, as long as it doesn’t have sharp edges. Cover in an offcut of wallpaper for a unified look. For storing tiny Lego sets and the like, plastic takeaway boxes, ice cream tubs or shoe boxes are ideal.

• T alking of lighting, avoid using a central hanging pendant as your one and only light source if at all possible. Add in table lamps, floor lamps and – if you’re renovating – wall lamps for a more flexible and flattering ambience. • T he TV is, often, the focal point of a living room. But you don’t always want to look at a blank black screen, so consider ways to disguise it when not in use – especially if you socialise a lot in your living room. Can you adapt a piece of furniture, such as an armoire, so that it sits behind closed doors when necessary?

Kitchens

• Aim to have tall .cupboards at one end of your cupboard run, with the hob nearby and the maximum amount of worktop space between the hob and the sink. Add the dishwasher next to the sink at the other end. • If possible, make worktops deeper than usual at 700mm instead of 600mm – that 100mm is more useful as working space than floor space, and will better accommodate a large sink. • In an open-plan kitchen, choose the quietest appliances possible, and design it so that you can hide the washing up from the view of the dining table. • If you paint the inside of a wall cabinet door with blackboard paint, you’ll always have somewhere to write a shopping list. • Base cabinets on legs, or recessed plinths, make the room seem larger because you can see more floor.

Bedrooms

Galaxy square mirror with integrated lighting, £200, Astro Lighting: 01279 427001; astrolighting.co.uk.

• Plan storage with precision, and divide the interior of your wardrobe into full, half and three-quarter hanging space, fitting shelves, drawers and shoe racks as necessary. Look for clever storage gadgets such as tie racks, belt racks and pull-out trays.

Bathrooms

• Squeezed for space? Use the full height of the room and build fitted wardrobes right up to the ceiling, using the less accessible high-up space for storing things you don’t often need.

• W all-hung WCs and washbasins create the illusion of extra space.

• If you’re on a budget, invest more in the moving parts – taps, shower doors and bath screens – and save on a plain white suite, adding decorative appeal with tiles and attractive accessories.

• Add a blackout lining to your curtains, or choose wooden shutters for additional sound and draught-proofing, and security.

• Hide pipework under floorboards or behind false walls – not forgetting to include access panels where necessary. You can punch shallow shelves into the studwork to create useful storage niches.

• Swing-arm lights on either side of the bed are great for reading, and free up space on bedside tables.

• A single light above your washbasin mirror creates really unflattering shadows. Try to fit lights on both sides instead.

• A blanket box at the end of the bed is an ideal place to store spare bedding, also providing a handy seat.

• Design your shower so you can turn it on from outside, thus avoiding having to stand under a stream of cold water.

• Children’s rooms

• Chosen a cast iron bath? Check it will fit up the stairs…

• Kids’ tastes change rapidly as they grow up so, unless you want

Telford & District Cats Protection are a team of volunteers who, fitting their voluntary work around jobs, families and other commitments, like to help cats. Our work is carried out with the support of our head office. We look after the welfare of cats in a variety of ways:

One of our main priorities is to rehome unwanted or abandoned cats. To help with this process, we have a small team of volunteer fosterers who take in cats until they are fit, healthy and ready for a new life. Unfortunately places are limited, so cats usually have to go on a waiting list until a space becomes available.

run regular neutering campaigns at vets and fetes, enabling people to neuter their cats for just £5 with Cats Protection paying the remainder. Word is now getting out and these events are getting increasingly popular. Another volunteer provides an online lost and found service, helping to reunite lost cats with their owners. We are always trying to raise money to enable us to help more cats. We have a shop in Newport which provides funding directly for our branch. We also hold stalls at various events to raise extra money for the branch, and to raise awareness of what we do.

Cats who come into our care are neutered, micro-chipped and vaccinated before we find a new home for them. Our homing volunteers visit people interested in adopting our cats, ensuring we match them up with the right cat and providing advice on cat care where needed.

If you would like some help or advice, would like to adopt a cat, or are interested in volunteering with us, please contact us on catsprotectiontelford@ gmail.com or 01952 305645.

Our neutering officer provides financial assistance to people who can’t afford to neuter their cats. We

PLAYTIME

If you have space for a dedicated playroom, or can allocate a section of another room, you can keep toys contained and your children happy – and it’s a great opportunity for some imaginative decorating, says Katherine Sorrell.

Design basics

The key to designing a playroom is flexibility. Unless money and time are no object, frequent redecorating is simply impractical, so keep the basics plain and simple – neutral walls, floor and major items of furniture, with only the less expensive and easily changed items (such as blinds, cushions or storage boxes) themed to colours or characters.

When it comes to lighting, inset ceiling lights and high-up wall lights are better than floor or table lamps that could get in the way of games and be knocked over. That said, decorative lighting looks lovely, and if you choose one specifically designed for children, use the correct wattage of bulb and position it so that there are no trailing flexes, safety should not be a problem.

Start by considering the major factors. Is the room just going to be a playroom, or will it double as a child’s bedroom, family dining room, adult living room or other? How much space do you have and what shape is it? Who will use it and how often? How old are your children? What are their likes and dislikes? What is your budget? Sketching a floor plan on graph paper will help, as you may need to include one or more beds (plus room for friends to sleep over), a desk, seating, a music system and clothes storage, as well as space for books, toys, games, art and craft activities – and, of course, free floor space in which to enjoy the above.

Place and space

The more space you can allocate to a playroom the better, as children love to be able to run, jump, hop and generally scoot around. Not to mention the storage requirements (see below). A light, bright room that doesn’t get too hot or too cold is ideal, preferably not too far from a toilet or from the kitchen or living room – it’s nice to be able to keep an eye or ear on what they’re up to. Direct access to outside space would, again, be ideal. Rather than a bland, box-shaped room, a space with interesting nooks and crannies, perhaps even different floor levels (within reason), will feed the imagination.

Floors should be non-slip, easily cleanable, hard-wearing and not too hard underfoot. Wooden or laminate boards plus a soft rug (with an anti-slip mat beneath), vinyl, linoleum, cork or rubber are all ideal. If you must have wall-to-wall carpet, go for an inexpensive one, perhaps with a texture or pattern that won’t show the dirt, and ask for it to be given a stainresistant treatment before installation.

You may choose to keep walls plain and direct all the interest towards furniture, lighting and accessories, or make them the focal point of the room, in the form of a specially painted mural. The latter looks gorgeous and a quick internet search will produce plenty of companies that will create one for you, but be careful that it won’t date. The alternative is to use framed pictures (your child’s own, maybe), removable stickers, or perhaps something more inventive such as artists’ canvases painted in bright blocks of colour, a camouflage net, flags, maps, blackboard or magnetic paint, or an entire wall of goodlooking storage.

Furniture and fun

When furnishing a playroom you can let your imagination run riot, but bear in mind that floor cushions and bean bags are probably a better (and less expensive) idea than miniature children’s sofas and chairs, which are quickly outgrown.

Storage

Always ensure that toys are easily accessible, not stuck on high shelves or stacked in inaccessible towers. Cheap and colourful plastic tubs are ideal for many toys, while Lego, plastic people, farmyard animals and other small things can go in appropriately sized storage boxes (you could recycle ice cream tubs or takeaway cartons). Depending on your child’s interests, you may also need storage/display space for elaborate railway or racing tracks, craft activities, pretend kitchens and shops, teddies, dolls and action figures and, for older kids, technology such as laptops and tablets. Last of all don’t forget peg rails, hooks and hanging fabric organisers – all invaluable space savers. Money Saving Ideas

TO GET YOU BACK ON TRACK IN 2017

Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime offers films, TV shows, music, books, and a free one-day delivery service for eligible Amazon products, all for a single annual payment of £79. You also get unlimited photo storage and discounts on video games. If you have a Kindle, you can borrow one book per month free-of-charge from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, and also have access to the Kindle First scheme. This allows you to download one of six titles a month for free, or at a reduced price ahead of their official publication date. You can save further by signing up to Prime Early Access, where you’re given the opportunity to purchase ‘Lightening Deals’ 30 minutes before non-Prime members.

Travel costs at home If you’re searching for ways to save money this year, take a look at some ideas for everyday savings and special treats that won’t break the bank. Discount websites Wowcher, Groupon and Living Social are just three websites offering great deals on everything from holidays to online courses. You simply sign up and input your chosen region to get a local or national deal with as much as 50% discount. It’s a great way to save on presents for friends and family members, or treat yourself whilst sticking to a budget.

Couponing

You may know couponing as cutting out discount vouchers from the local paper or supermarket magazines. But the practice has taken on a life of its own, with ‘extreme couponing’ hitting the headlines as shoppers save huge amounts on their monthly food bill. Various websites dedicated to couponing tell you where to find the best offers online, but you do need to spend time searching, and be organised so that you can move quickly to secure the best deals. You’ll also need to stockpile items if you’re serious about saving money this way, as that’s how the best bargains are obtained. The Money Saving Expert website has its own coupon page, and if you look at Supersavvyme.co.uk you’ll find a range of coupons for Procter and Gamble products.

Airbnb

Airbnb is a website offering accommodation in privatelyowned residences around the world. It can often be cheaper than staying in ‘traditional’ hotel rooms or hostels, and offers travellers a vast choice of grades and styles to suit every budget. You can choose to rent an entire property, or stay in one of your host’s rooms - all you need to do is enter the date of travel and where you want to go. Some hosts prefer to find out a little more about their guests before they’ll confirm a booking; others offer an ‘Instant Book’ facility. Previous guests leave reviews on the website to give you an idea of the quality you’ll experience, and the company operates a secure online payment service.

34

Fuel Large supermarkets generally offer the cheapest petrol, but you can also find out the cost of fuel at various independent petrol stations local to you using the website Petrolprices.com. You just have to input your location, and a list of petrol stations is returned once you’ve signed up. Car sharing Car sharing is a great way to save money on motoring, whether it’s with work colleagues or via websites such as BlaBlaCar and Liftshare, which allow you to advertise spaces in your car. Train fares You can save money on long train journeys by buying ‘split tickets’, where the journey is divided and you have several tickets instead of one. The train must stop at the stations named on your tickets, and it can become complicated if you need to change trains, but in many cases huge savings can be made this way.

Low cost hotel rooms and car hire

Several websites, including Lastminute.com, Priceline and Hotwire, have a ‘Top Secret Rooms’ section where you can book a top quality hotel room at a fraction of the usual price. All you need to do is choose a location and the hotel star-rating you’re looking for, and pick a hotel from the list returned. You see a description and the hotel’s star-rating; the only drawback is you don’t know the name of the hotel until you’ve paid. You may be able to find out which hotel it is, however, by typing some of the phrases used in these descriptions into a search engine. You can then read reviews on TripAdvisor.com to check that it’s what you want, as once you’ve paid, there is no facility to get a refund. These same websites offer reduced car rental, but you may be able to save even more money using price comparison websites such as Skyscanner, Carrentals, and TravelSupermarket.

Medical costs

Annual certificate for prescriptions If you need prescriptions on a regular basis, it may be worth buying a pre-paid annual certificate. Prescription Prepayment Certificates (PPCs) are currently available for three months at a cost of £29.10, or £104.00 for 12 months. Certificates can be backdated for up to one month, and a monthly direct debit is an option to spread the cost of the 12-month certificate.

PETS:

Socialising your puppy is important to its general development, and encourages a calm, confident and friendly personality that’s accepting of change and new situations. It also makes life with a dog easier for you, and helps with general training. Vary the activities You’ll retain your puppy’s interest by introducing plenty of variety, such as meeting new people and other animals in different environments, but take care not to overload their nervous system. Keep hold of your puppy at first when you meet new

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO SOCIALISE YOUR PUPPY people, letting them gently approach your dog with a small treat. This will make it a constructive experience for the dog, and they’ll retain positive associations. A few activities to try It’s also worth remembering that until your puppy has its first vaccination, you may need to avoid certain situations, but here are a few suggestions for places to go and people to meet once it is safe: • Busy, noisy streets as well as quiet countryside areas. • Young and older children (under close supervision). • Paddling in the sea. • Meeting a variety of dogs of all ages, shapes and sizes. • People on motorbikes, cycles and skateboards. The noise of household appliances can scare a young puppy, so it’s a good idea to expose them to the vacuum cleaner and washing machine very carefully, in short stages. Dog training classes are a great way to meet different dogs, and also provide a good support network for you. http://blog.petplan.co.uk/01/2016/advice/dog-training-socialisingpuppy-puppies-with-people-other-animals-canines/

Exciting Times

AT TERRY JONES SOLICITORS

Shropshire law firm, Terry Jones Solicitors who have offices in Shrewsbury, Telford, Birdgnorth and Newport, has experienced unprecedented growth to its residential conveyancing department in 2016. Managing Director, Terry Jones commented, “These are exciting times for our conveyancing teams in all our offices. We have seen significant growth in the demand for our domestic conveyancing services, particularly our Telford Office. The source of instructions has increased significantly, not just confined to Shropshire, but adjoining development sites throughout the Midlands. This has necessitated our bringing to the firm a number of new faces who possess the skills and expertise needed to continue to provide a first class service for our clients. This in turn has enabled the firm to develop strong relationships with national house builders, local estate agents and the many repeat instructions we receive from existing clients. We have seen increased instructions coming from Government schemes, such as Help To Buy and Help To Buy ISA, which has invigorated the new property market. We continue to add to our client list as we further prepare to welcome new development sites and instructions from purchasers in the New Year.” Joanne Roberts, Oliver Lutner, Yvonne Masters

It May Not be Too Late

TO MAKE A CLAIM FOR PAYMENT PROTECTION INSURANCE (PPI)

According to ‘Which?’ the banks have written to 5.5 million customers, letting them know they might have been mis-sold PPI and offering three years in which to make a claim. Although some of these letters were sent in 2013, people are still successfully claiming PPI from banks and other lenders. A potential final deadline of June 2019 has also been announced by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). If this is confirmed, it offers plenty of time to write to lenders and recover the money that should never have been taken from you. By making a claim yourself rather than using a claims management company, you can save up to 30% of the compensation awarded. The firms involved in this type of financial mis-selling now operate more efficient procedures for paying compensation and resolving disputes, and many people have benefited from claiming independently. Banks and other financial institutions have been forced to set money aside for PPI claims, making payouts quicker and the process a little easier.

Could you have been mis-sold PPI?

When the company replies

You receive a positive response Lenders have eight weeks in which to respond, and if you’re successful your refund will depend on various aspects of the loan agreement: Regular premiums Credit cards and mortgages generally had a regular PPI premium attached, rather than one single premium. If this was the case, you should receive a refund for the premiums paid. If interest had been added, this amount should also be refunded.

Payment Protection Insurance was sold alongside loans, credit cards, and consumer credit agreements for items including kitchen goods, technology, and cars. PPI could have been missold to you in a number of ways, including these scenarios:

Single premiums Single PPI premiums were often paid in relation to personal loans and finance agreements. How much you receive depends on whether the loan is still in force:

• You were pressured by the salesperson, or told it was compulsory. You were self-employed, unemployed, or retired when the policy was taken out.

• If your loan is ongoing, the lender will calculate the monthly amount you should have been paying (minus the PPI), and this will be deducted from the total amount outstanding.

• You had a pre-existing medical problem. • A clear explanation was not given of how much PPI you were going to pay, or if it was included in the total loan quote. • You already had cover in place within another policy – life insurance, for example. • You were not informed of the ‘cooling-off’ period during which you could have changed your mind. • They told you the loan would be more expensive if you didn’t sign up for PPI. To establish whether or not you’ve paid PPI in the past, check your credit agreements or other loan documents if you still have them. If not, you should get in touch with the lender by phone or letter. You might also want to obtain a copy of your credit report, which will list the lenders you have dealt with in the past. The three main credit reference agencies in the UK are Experian, Equifax and Callcredit – you can sign up and order your credit report online for a small fee.

Contacting the lender

If you no longer have your loan agreement, write to or phone the company concerned. Many larger financial organisations will be able to tell you over the phone whether or not you’ve been sold Payment Protection Insurance. You can also request a copy of your original agreement. Some companies can deal with your entire claim by phone, or online. The Financial Ombudsman Service also has an online questionnaire, and allows you to upload any supporting documents. Otherwise, you should print it off and sent it by recorded delivery after taking a copy for yourself.

40

• If the loan has been repaid in full, you’ll receive a refund for the amounts you paid. The lender should also calculate a new redemption figure as though the PPI had never been paid, and repay the difference between this and the amount you actually repaid on redemption.

If the claim is rejected

Should there be no response from the lender within eight weeks, they reject your claim, or you are unhappy with the refunded amount, you can contact the Financial Ombudsman Service for a decision. This must be done within six months of the lender’s final response to you. The Financial Ombudsman Service is the official channel through which disputes are settled between consumers and lenders. If your case is taken on, they will confirm in writing that an adjudicator is looking at both sides of the dispute, and expect the lender to back up their decision with further information. It may take up to two years to reach a decision, and any interim offers made by the lender will be forwarded to you. If you’re not happy with the final outcome, you can request that an official ombudsman reviews your case for a second opinion. www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/ppi-loan-insurance#how www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/cardsloans/article-1606455/ Reclaim-PPI-premiums-payment-protection-insurance.html www.fca.org.uk/consumers/payment-protection-insurance/claimmis-sold-ppi www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/advice/how-to-reclaim-missold-ppi

CHILDREN, EDUCATION & ACTIVITIES

New Business School

OPENED AT WREKIN COLLEGE

Preparation for the outside world will be the core philosophy at a newly-opened £1million business school at Shropshire’s Wrekin College.

The facility at the Wellington campus was opened on January 26 by highly successful entrepreneur Nick Wheeler. Mr Wheeler, who founded upmarket shirt maker Charles Tyrwhitt, was born in Ludlow and is married to Chrissie Rucker MBE, founder of the White Company. He spoke of his delight to be officially launching the venture while praising Wrekin College for its innovative approach to educating the “whole child”. The business school is designed to resemble the corporate world, rather than a classroom boasting a lecture theatre, boardroom, offices for hot-desking and break-out spaces for meetings and brain-storming. Headmaster Tim Firth said the project underlined his vision for the school which was to ensure that each pupil was fully prepared for the outside world. “We are rightly proud of and excited by this new addition to the facilities at Wrekin College because it will be a crucial part of the education of each child here and a significantly valuable asset for the wider community,” said Mr Firth.

“This is not simply a facility for business studies students. It will be used to teach children all kinds of life skills needed in the workplace and beyond and also as a venue for helping other groups in the community to improve their career prospects and to bring together business leaders.” The calendar is already busy for the new school, with 16 schools from across Shropshire invited to take part in the Wrekin College Business Challenge later this year A full diary of guest speakers from a variety of careers and industries is also to continue throughout 2017 together with events dedicated to apprenticeships and gap year students. “We were absolutely thrilled to welcome Nick Wheeler to perform the opening. He was a great inspiration to all our pupils in terms of what can be achieved with a can-do attitude.”

Celebrate the Birth of Flight Celebrate the birth of flight during the February half-term with an array of themed family activities at Shropshire’s Ironbridge Gorge Museums tying in with special flight-linked anniversaries.

2017 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Wilbur Wright (16th April 1867), who flew the world’s first successful aeroplane back in 1903 with his brother Orville, while the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, Amelia Earhart, was born 120 years ago on 24th July 1897. Create pneumatic rockets and gliders at Enginuity. Discover the fun of flying at the Enginuity hands-on design and technology centre in Coalbrookdale, where you can build and launch a pneumatic rocket at drop-in workshops between 10.30am and 3.45pm for £1 (plus admission) from 18th to 26th February. Between 20th and 24th February go along to Enginuity’s Fab Lab and use the 3D printer to make 8-inch long gliders from special plastic for a small fee of £1 for each model (plus admission). Then design decals for your glider on the computer, cut them from coloured vinyl using the vinyl cutter and stick them on to your glider, which you can take home and fly outside.

AT THE IRONBRIDGE GORGE MUSEUMS

Flight themed tile and ceramic clay workshops, between Saturday 18th and 25th February, excluding Sunday 19th, join drop-in flight themed tile decorating workshops at Jackfield Tile Museum and use your imagination to decorate tiles using the traditional tube lining technique; perhaps a hot air balloon, flying saucer, aeroplane or other flying ‘machine’. Tiles cost from £5 each (plus admission) and can be fired and sent home later for a small extra charge to cover postage and packing. It takes up to 1.5 hours to decorate a tile so last admission is at 3pm. Across the river at Coalport China Museum you can take part in hands-on flight themed workshops from Tuesday 21st to Thursday 23rd February to try sculpting your own flying creature from air-drying clay; choose from a bird, dragon, insect, bat or wherever your imagination leads you. Throughout the half-term holiday, you can also paint ceramic items such as a money box, fridge magnet or delicate china flower as well as paper plates. Sessions take place between 11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm and all ceramic items carry a small charge of £1-£4 in addition to the museum entrance fee. Afterwards follow a trail to discover the many birds from across the globe, which are featured in the museum’s ceramic collections. For further information, call the Ironbridge Tourist Information Centre on 01952 433 424 or visit www.ironbridge.org.uk.

FOR MOTHERS ON MOTHERING SUNDAY

At Blists Hill, where life over 100 years ago is recreated by costumed characters, you can follow a family trail to discover how Mothering Sunday was celebrated in Victorian times. Along the way you can buy a slice of Simnel Cake from the Bakery, colour a card for mother and join a drop-in session to make a floral rosette in the Goods Shed between 11am and 1pm or 2pm and 4pm; some activities carry an additional charge.

As part of their 50th Anniversary celebrations The Ironbridge Gorge Museums are inviting mums to enjoy a day out as their guest at five of their sites on Mothering Sunday, 26th March, when accompanied by another full-paying adult. This free entry offer includes Blists Hill Victorian Town, Coalport China Museum, Tar Tunnel, Jackfield Tile Museum, Museum of The Gorge, the Darby Houses and Enginuity.

To make the day extra special, treat mum and buy her a Victorian High Tea in the Club Room with delicious sandwiches, cream-filled scones and pastries along with a glass of Prosecco and a pot of freshly brewed tea for an additional ÂŁ15.50 per adult and ÂŁ12.50 per child (of all ages). Afternoon tea must be pre-booked by calling 01785 252247 or at sales@ jenkinsonscaterers.co.uk In the Victorian era Mothering Sunday was a special day when children working away in domestic service could return home to visit their mother and families. Although celebrated during Lent, fasting was relaxed and families could indulge in delicious rich foods and celebrations. Children were encouraged to bake a Simnel Cake or pick flowers as a gift for their mothers; hence the evolution of present giving on Mothering Sunday. For further information, contact the Ironbridge Tourist Information Centre on Tel: 01952 433 424 or visit www. ironbridge.org.uk.

Lynn organised a bake sale in her local town and said: “Help for Heroes is really close to my heart and I wanted to do something, so I invited my friends and family to my home for tea and cake. It was really easy to organise and a great opportunity to catch up, have some fun and raise some money for a fantastic charity.”

FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE

The Oakley Arms

Kiddemore Green Road, Brewood, Staffordshire ST19 9BQ

T: 01902 859800

The Oakley Arms opened its doors in May 2016 following an extensive renovation of the former 19th century Oakley House Country Club. This once derelict venue has been beautifully restored and transformed into a stunning country pub and restaurant, which sits proudly on the outskirts of Brewood Village, a pleasant 20-minute drive from central Telford. The pretty dove grey exterior and country house charm instantly draws you in. There is ample parking to the rear of the pub and even designated areas to tether your horse, bike or four-legged friend, perfect for the more adventurous and outdoorsy visitors. The pub is set in a picture perfect slice of English countryside; a large outdoor terrace overlooks the pubs own private lake, complete with ducks and an island. When summer finally does return, The Oakley Arms terrace will undoubtedly be a popular spot for long and lazy lunches in the sunshine. Inside the interior is warm and spacious, the wood flooring and roaring log fires give a cosy, homely feel. The vast bar takes centre stage and is stocked with a mind-boggling array of beverages. There are an impressive 160 seats in total but thanks to plenty of intimate nooks and clever division of space, The Oakley Arms retains an intimate and relaxed atmosphere. Upon arrival were greeted and shown to a table in a quiet corner of the pub, our drinks order was taken and we were given chance to look over the menu. The food style is modern British cuisine and the menu is updated regularly with dishes that reflect the season, there is a range of starters, light bites, mains, sandwiches and several children’s dishes to choose from.

48

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT For starter I chose the chicken liver pate (£6.25) and my very willing accomplice on this review, my mom Lynn, went for the goats cheese, basil and roast pepper terrine (£6.75).

The cheese and potato pie was also super tasty and something I’d never tried before, several layers of soft sliced potato, tasty Cheshire cheese and onion wrapped in a layer of golden flaky pastry, served with buttered greens, carrots, parsnips and gravy. This is definitely a dish I’ll be ordering again soon!

The pate was served with triangles of toasted granary bread and plum chutney, the generous slice of pate was smooth and flavoursome, the plum chutney added a welcome sweetness and the granary toast gave texture and bite. Lynn’s goat’s cheese terrine had the unmistakable tangy yet creamy flavour, it was layered throughout with slices of roasted red pepper and basil and came served with a dressed side salad and slices of toasted ciabatta. Lynn said that the crispiness of the ciabatta was the perfect partner to the rich and creamy goat’s cheese. For main course Lynn ordered the braised shoulder of lamb (£17.95) and I opted for the Applebys Cheshire cheese and potato pie (£11.95), which I am told is a new addition to the menu. The braised lamb is apparently the most popular dish on the menu and it’s easy to understand why, the meat was melt in the mouth tender and came served with dauphinoise potatoes, buttered green beans and a herby rosemary gravy. Lynn didn’t speak to me for the entire time she was eating her main course, which is always a sure sign of a delicious meal!

Despite the very generous portions at The Oakley Arms, we somehow managed to squeeze in the glazed lemon tart (£5.95) and the profiteroles (5.95) for dessert. The lemon tart was fresh and tangy and came served with fresh raspberries, raspberry sorbet and a raspberry coulis, the perfect palate cleanser after such a rich and delicious meal. The profiteroles were everything you would expect, plump cream filled clouds of deliciousness, smothered in a rich dark chocolate sauce… lets just say the diet starts again tomorrow! You would never guess that The Oakley Arms is less than a year old, it just feels like it’s always been there, which is testament to the fantastic job that manager John Duncan and his team are doing. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening at The Oakley Arms, the building, setting and decor is all utterly gorgeous and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, so much so that I promise once you step inside you really won’t want to leave.

Parenting

Tips and tricks to make your life easier, from washable nail polish to a booster seat that can fit in a school bag. Monday morning panics 8-8.30am is often a rather stressful period in my house. Arguments over brushing teeth (my son) compete with tears over forgotten homework (my daughter). One thing I do have sorted is making it easy for them to find their uniform so they can get dressed. I use a rubber band to attach two clothes hangers together, one of which is the type with clips. Pants get hung from one clip, tights or socks from the other, and the rest of the uniform goes on the other hanger. Simple. My next mission is to teach them to put their PJs under their pillow, rather than dumping them on the floor. We’ve been working on that one for a while now, with no luck. Hair brushing is a source of tantrums the world over. The Wet Brush may save a fair few tears (theirs and yours). It’s the best detangling brush I’ve found yet and can be used on wet or dry hair. £11.99 from www.lookfantastic. com. Kids love nail polish. Schools don’t love it quite so much. If (like me) you’re hopeless at remembering to remove your child’s nail varnish on a Sunday evening, you might want to try Nailmatic Kids Nail Polish. Not only is it toxinfree and available in several child-friendly shades, but it can be washed off with warm soapy water. Powderpink glitter is a favourite in my house, although my son prefers Rio Green. £6.95, www.cuckooland.com.

TIME AND SANITY SAVERS

Days out From emergency wees in the park to dropped dummies, children just attract germs. Hand sanitising gels are handy but not always that child-friendly. Aquaint, on the other hand, is 100% natural and formulated without strong chemicals, preservatives or alcohol. It kills 99.9% of bacteria, but is completely safe, so can be used on everything from hands to drinks bottles. £2.49 - £4.99 from Boots, Mothercare and other retailers. Children seem to have an innate ability to lose things. If you can’t be bothered to spend hours sewing on name tags, try Tinyme labels. They’re printed with your child’s name and a design of your choice. The Essentials Pack (from £24) comes with more than 200 labels, including iron-on labels for clothes, and different sized stickers for shoes, pencil cases and so on. They’re designed to stay on through washing, tumble drying and general day-to-day use. Tinyme also make personalised bags, books, drinks bottles and a ton of other items, handy if your child is particularly prone to misplacing their possessions.

Play dates After-school playdates are great at keeping the kids out of your hair, but it’s all too easy to forget to swap car seats with the other parents. The new Mifold (pictured above) can help to make sure you’re never again caught out with three kids and only two booster seats. Unlike traditional booster seats, Mifold adjusts the seatbelt to fit the child, rather than raising the child up to fit the belt. That means it’s far smaller than a car seat; small enough to keep in a glove box or even your child’s school bag. It can be adjusted to fit children aged from around four to 12, and it meets the highest legal standards for child restraint systems. £49.95 from John Lewis.

Mad March Hair GADGETS FOR GROOMING, CUTTING, STYLING OR REMOVING, WHATEVER YOUR GENDER When it comes to looking after your hair or getting rid of unwanted hair, there’s no shortage of options - and no wonder, because the beauty market is worth huge sums of money. So it’s hardly surprising to see the likes of Dyson joining the party, albeit with a hairdryer that costs £299. The reviews are excellent, but if you’re anything like us you’re probably hoping to spend something more like £29 on a hairdryer. If that’s the case, keep an eye out for Tourmaline dryers from the usual suspects: it’s a kind of ceramic that enables hair dryers to deliver powerful airflow without leaving your hair looking like it’s been through the tumble dryer. Another great idea comes from late-night TV advertiser JML. Its £39.99 Simply Straight brush is a heated ceramic brush that promises to combine two essential items: your brush and straighteners. According to the Mirror it works really well - it’s not quite as effective as separate brushes and straighteners, but it comes awfully close and is very, very quick. One of the current trends in hair styling is steam. Stylers such as the Remington CB4N Flexibrush can be used without it, or you can pop some water in, wait 60 seconds and get fabulous, not frizzy, results. The Flexibrush was a cult classic in the 1990s, and Remington says it brought it back because it was getting 50 calls a week from people wanting to buy one. There are lots of gadgets for hair removal too, from the usual epilators and shavers to more high-tech options such as IPL hair removal. IPL uses pulses of light to get rid of unwanted hair, and while it works brilliantly we’ve got bad news for anyone with ginger or light blonde hair, or very dark skin: IPL only works on darker hair colours on lighter skin tones. Prices aren’t as frightening as they used to be - for example, the £350 Philips Lumea SC2004/11 is currently on sale for a more reasonable £219 - and you can use them anywhere. Some models are even okay to use on your face. The downside is that they can take some time, so for example you should allow half an hour to do your legs. IPL is available for men too, although they aren’t recommended for use on your face or on anything more sensitive than the bikini line. Devices for men or sold as unisex devices tend to be more expensive - for example, the Remington i-Light Pro is £299 and the Philips Lumea for Men is £350 - but they do work, provided you don’t have ginger or light blond hair. A big advantage for men is that unlike other hair removal methods, IPL doesn’t have stubbly regrowth, irritate your skin or lead to ingrowing hairs. There are plenty of grooming gadgets for men too. Facebook is full of ads for innovative razors and gadgets such as the £19 RazorPit Blade Sharpener. For hair removal elsewhere there’s no shortage of electric groomers, shavers and combined head and body trimmers, but shop around: recommended retail prices can be hilariously high, but retailers often sell the kits at huge discounts. That applies to women too: beauty gadgets vary wildly in price between retailers. It’s worth picking a favourite and using a comparison site such as pricespy.co.uk to make sure that looking good won’t be bad for your bank balance.

Mother's Little Helpers Time, space and sanity savers to see you through spring... If it’s been ‘one of those’ mornings, and you just haven’t had a minute to wash your hair, a dry shampoo can come in very handy. Philip Kingsley’s One More Day Dry Shampoo is a light spray that keeps excess oil at bay. Unlike some dry shampoos, this one doesn’t feel sticky or leave a powdery residue. It also helps to keep your scalp happy, so minimises flaking and irritation. And, as an added bonus, it gives your hair some extra oomph and helps it to hold a style better. Priced at £14.50, the dry shampoo is available from www.philipkingsley.co.uk. I do love a good multi-tasker, especially one that smells as good as Darphin’s Revitalising Oil. I keep a bottle by my desk for a quick daily mini-facial. I also use it as a body oil, straight after a bath. It feels lovely and leaves skin much smoother. Finally, I work a few drops of the oil through my hair when it’s damp, to add a bit of extra shine. A little goes a long way, so the Revitalising Oil is actually not bad value for money at £25. Available from Space NK, House of Fraser, John Lewis and www.darphin.co.uk.

Bee Good’s NectaPerfecta Beautifying Mask

is another multi-tasker, and top of my wish list at the moment. It’s packed with 15 natural ingredients, including beeswax, honey, bilberry fruit extract, jojoba and wheatgerm oil, and can be used from head to toe. Use it as a face mask, weekly scalp treatment, or as an intensive treatment for dry patches on elbows, heels and hands. It can help to lock in moisture, improve elasticity, minimise fine lines and stimulate cell renewal. £39.95 from Waitrose or www.beegood.co.uk. Love trying new products? You might want to think about signing up for a mystery beauty box. Priced from around £9 per box, they’re filled with a selection of luxury beauty goodies, from makeup to moisturiser, and usually worth at least twice what you’ve paid. Normally, you won’t find out what you’re getting until the box arrives, but contents can often be personalised to suit your skin’s needs and your personal tastes. Beauty boxes are delivered to your house monthly, and you can choose whether to sign up for one, three, six or 12 months. Try www.glossybox.co.uk, www. lovelula.com, www.birchbox.co.uk, www.lookfantastic.com and www.notanotherbill.com. If you don’t have time for body lotion, the new Dr Do Good In-Shower Moisturiser could be for you. Just spray it on in the shower and rinse. Simple. There’s no need to massage it in, and you don’t need to wait for it to soak in before you get dressed. It leaves skin feeling soft and hydrated, and is ideal for popping in your gym bag. Ingredients include extracts of five superfoods, including Vitamin A-rich carrot. £15, www.drdogood.co.uk.

Super Size America

James Baggott takes a look behind the scenes of America’s motor show in the Sunshine State For a land known for its love of excess, the LA motor show is a relatively bijou affair. Small, compact and easy to get around, it’s the polar opposite of the city that hosts it. It makes little sense launching cars in a metropolis that’s smothered in a layer of smog, crammed with traffic and needs more cars like the ozone layer needs a bigger hole in it, but America being America does it anyway. Unlike the vast, monolithic motoring expos of Frankfurt and Paris, LA does things in bite-sized chunks (unlike its burgers). The stands are more compact, the press corps less stressed and fewer in numbers, and the new car launches less frequent. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t big news out there in the States – some manufacturers, especially those with a presence on this side of the pond, or with aspirations to have one, take the event pretty seriously. Alfa Romeo is one such ambitious car maker. The Italian firm showcased its new Stelvio SUV with a launch in a tent outside the main halls. It was so packed, the overzealous American fire regulations meant most journalists couldn’t even get in. Fortunately, this rival to the Porsche Macan and Jaguar F-Pace was quickly moved to the Alfa stand where we got a proper look. Rumours suggest it will arrive in the UK late in 2017 with a diesel engine first, with a bi-turbo 2.9-litre V6 packing 503bhp following soon after. The spicy version will have four-wheel drive, the diesel making do with power via the rear wheels. Some Italian flair in a sector not known for it will be most welcome. Elsewhere, the Germans gave the clearest signs yet that another recession was imminent with the unveiling of the why-do-we-need-it Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet. Just 300 of the 621bhp monsters will be produced and, although pricing is

DOESN'T EXTEND TO LA AUTO SHOW

yet to be released, don’t expect much change from £200,000. Mazda used the eve of the first press day to take the wraps off its new CX-5. At an event peppered with nonsense car design gobbledygook, and interspersed with pictures of cheetahs and chopsticks that were being used to demonstrate Mazda’s new design direction, the manufacturer showed off a rather smart looking SUV. It’s the best-selling model in Europe for the firm and its new nose, which has more than a hint of Jaguar F-Pace about it, points to the future look for all Mazdas. It also comes in a new red, which is redder than the last red. Understood? Good. Jaguar was another manufacturer that had decided to grab some early motoring show headlines, revealing its futuristic electric I-Pace to the world in its own unique style two full days before the event opened. Using virtual reality headsets it simultaneously launched the car in LA and London, with car designer Ian Callum showing off the firm’s first foray into electric vehicles (EVs). LA was an apt showcase for a model that will sell 50 per cent of its volume in the States, and with a range of 310 miles on a single charge chances are those buyers will be queuing up to get hold of one when it goes into production next year. Finally a Tesla rival from Britain? We hope so. Other notable launches included a world premiere for the largest of all Minis, the Countryman, and the new Volkswagen e-Golf with a range of 186 miles on a charge - up 50 per cent on its predecessor. However, it was the real Americana that caught our eye in the subterranean halls under the main event. Dubbed ‘the garage’, they contained a host of modified motors that were a welcome relief from the corporate frontage of the manufacturer stands upstairs. Modified Ferraris, Gulfliveried Fords and big-wheeled classics were among the delights hidden away below the show’s huge halls. Just like the city then, proving if you scratch beneath the surface a little you’ll find the real treats.

We Exceed

Greenhous Vauxhall is the original car brand sold by Greenhous and the Trench Lock facility was opened in 2000. It was previously land owned by GKN Sankey. Greenhous market a number or brands of cars and commercial vehicles. Dan Foskett, sales manager, says of the dealership: “We sell new and used cars and vans and also have one of the largest parts, service and MOT operations in the county. There are eight sales consultants at Telford, including one Motability executive. We stock the whole range of Vauxhall cars and have a large stock of used vehicles. Our cars start from around £3995 and go up to £20000.” Last year Greenhous Vauxhall sold close to 400 new and used commercials and generally have 200 plus new and used commercials available to customers at any one time. Jason Jackson is the Vauxhall Commercial Vehicles Manager and he explains: “We endeavour to make it simple for both the private buyer, who is perhaps buying their one van, and the business user who needs one or more vans to support their business needs. Most of our customers use a van as a tool to allow them to operate more efficiently. They are experts in their profession

OUR CUSTOMERS EXPECTATIONS

but not necessarily in the commercial vehicle industry. This is why we pride ourselves on having highly trained staff trained to ensure we understand their business and can provide the perfect solution to their CV needs. “We are also specialists in the very complicated sector of vehicle conversions. Where other dealers may shy away from bespoke solutions, we welcome these opportunities whether you are looking for a dropside, tipper or something a little more specialised like a fully remote controlled car transporter slide bed. We have the knowledge, experience and expertise to facilitate this.” Once a vehicle is bought there is a professional aftersales department to fulfil service and repair requirements. Geoff Lowe, Aftersales Manager provides some background: “The Aftersales department has a responsibility to ensure that we exceed our customers’ expectations. It is down to the dedication of the staff that we are able to build the rapport we have with our customers. “The customers experience begins from the first phone call or interaction whether this is with the customer care team or front desk. The staff there have the skills to find out the issues and offer solutions to the customer. “We have at Trench Lock a very experienced staff, a number of whom have received long service award watches. We have 32 staff in aftersales. 14 are master technicians and we have one apprentice at present. There are 19 workshop bays and 2 MOT bays available.” The service department maintains an excellent level of up to date parts which is critical for a first time repair. Our parts team work with the technicians to ensure timely repair and maintenance work is carried out. An important feature is that every vehicle that has been in for a service receives a courtesy wash and vac of a high standard. For more information visit the website www.greenhousvauxhall.co.uk

Travel

Nestling between the seven mountains and a sprinkling of islands in the North Sea, Norway's second city is one of the prettiest towns on the south-west coast. Bright, colourful, it shines whatever the weather, old and new jostling side by side, just steps away from the scenic wonders of a pristine natural world. Laced with inlets and bays, Bergen is the gateway to the fjords, the perfect base to catch a glimpse of this enticing world, maybe sailing for a few hours on Sognefjord, the longest and deepest, or Osterfjord encircling an island where myriad waterfalls tumble down the cliffs. It's sheer magic, a hidden paradise which lingers in your mind long after you return to harbour. Highly rated by cruise ships and yachts, Bergen's maritime vocation dates back to medieval times, enjoying its golden age from the 14th century onwards when the Hanseatic League brought trade and prosperity. Today the finely restored merchants' houses are the city's most iconic image, their wooden façades painted in vibrant colours, rising gable to gable along the old Bryggen wharf. It's a world heritage site and the most atmospheric part of town, with wooden alleyways festooned in rickety steps and overhanging galleries and craft shops tucked in every corner. Just minutes away at the water's edge, stalls tempt visitors with succulent summer berries and reindeer

BERGEN - NORWAY

sausages half a metre long, while the fish market serves simple but delicious meals under the awnings. When the sun shines on a long summer’s day, restaurants spill out onto the cobbled quay and it feels almost Mediterranean. It's easy to stroll around Bergen from the medieval fortress to the gleaming high street, from the tip of the peninsula to the esplanade leading down to the lake. Sculptures and fountains pop up here and there and sometimes the sound of violins drifts under the arcades, remembering the local virtuoso Ole Bull, or it could be the haunting echo of a Grieg melody. Both artists were born in Bergen. Meanwhile, in the elegant district above the old town, white weatherboard houses climb up the slopes along the steep meandering lanes or gather higgledy-piggledy in secluded courtyards. Roses bloom in cottage gardens and the higher you go, the better the views. Now and then the funicular railway makes its way up the mountain where you look across the city and fjords to the islands in the distance. Up there, rambling trails head through forests and heathland dotted with lakes, rocks and cliffs rise above the treeline and when you reach the top of Rundemanen at 568 metres, mountains roll as far as you can see. In these highlands haunted by mysterious trolls, you could encounter a wolverine, a lynx or a bear but visitors who come to see the city lights do not stray far after dark.

Back Seat Birth

TO FRONT SEAT DRIVER

My seventeen year-old daughter has just passed her driving test, so I was proud to see her set out on her first solo journey. For my peace of mind I would like her to take some advanced driving lessons (she’s learned to pass the driving test, now she needs to learn to drive) but pressure from Dad is not the way to introduce such a thing: she has to have her own “why” in order to want to take them. Hopefully she will soon. But that’s for the future. I relate this to you because of what caught my eye recently: it’s a light-hearted story concerning another similar aged driver. 17 years ago, the parents of Freya Whitelaw were rushing in their Vauxhall Astra to the maternity hospital. Except Freya wouldn’t wait and Mrs Whitelaw had to be delivered of her on the back seat of the car. Luckily they had made it to the hospital car park, so staff assisted and both mother and baby were fine. Time passed and the Whitelaws kept their Astra as the family runabout. It’s over 19 years old now (and a bit creaky says

I’m sure she will pass the driving test with ease and, hopefully, go on to increase her skills behind the wheel. After all, she has her “why” in the history of the car she is driving: she started her life in the back seat so would want to continue a long and safe one in the front. By Iain Betson

Men Over 50 Men in the Telford area are being invited to attend a special event on 13th March 2017 from 6pm at Jubilee House, 74 High Street, Madeley, Telford TF7 5AH, where they will be able to get checked for prostate cancer free of charge. After discovering the heart-stopping facts about prostate cancer, Ironbridge Lions approached retired Consultant Urological Surgeon, Mr David Baxter-Smith, to help them stage the event which will be free to all men who attend. Tests will be provided by Mr Baxter-Smith, an authority on prostate cancer who has worked closely with Lions clubs across the country to make screening more widely available, and professional Phlebotomists will be on hand to take blood samples. Prostate cancer affects around 45,000 men in the UK every year. Of those, almost one third will die from the disease. In Shropshire alone, around 250 men are diagnosed annually with prostate cancer. Despite these frightening statistics there is no national screening programme for prostate cancer, which is why Ironbridge Lions, together with Ironbridge Rotary Club, are urging all local men in categories ‘at risk’ from the disease to attend the

The message is simple – ‘you can’t afford to be shy if you don’t want to die’.” The ‘at risk’ categories for prostate cancer are: • All men over 50 • All men over 40 with a history of the disease in their family • Any man over 45 from an African/West Indian ethnic group “Having talked to others about similar events staged around the country in recent years,” says Mr Marsh, “it is a fact that many men who had no prior symptoms were tested and found to have prostate cancer and as a result were able to receive treatment before it was too late.” Look out for the prostate cancer screening event that will take place later this year. Books

GIFTS FOR MUM

Looking for the perfect present for Mother’s Day? Maybe we can help…

Paris for One and Other Stories – Jojo Moyes These 11 short stories are filled with romance, humour and charm. As we’ve come to expect from Moyes, great plots and believable characters make this a really enjoyable read. The title story follows Nell as she finds herself alone in Paris and has to break out of her comfort zone. Perfect for mums who sometimes only have 10 minutes to relax with a book and a cuppa.

Planet Earth II – Stephen Moss Millions tuned in to watch David Attenborough reveal some of the most spectacular natural wonders the Earth has to offer. If your mum was one of them, she’ll love this book. With 250 stunning photographs and commentary on the habitats and animals featured in the TV series, Planet Earth II may well find a prized position on the bookcase for years to come.

Hide and Seek – M. J. Arlidge If Mum’s into crime fiction, Hide and Seek could be a good choice. DI Helen Grace is serving time in Holloway for a series of murders she didn’t commit. When one of her cell mates is brutally murdered, suspicion turns to Helen. Can she find the real killer before she gets the blame, and before she becomes the next victim? Gripping.

From the Heart – Susan Hill A poignant coming of age novel, From the Heart is set at a time when many of the freedoms we now take for granted could cost you dearly. Olive wants to be free to follow her heart. But an unplanned pregnancy gives her an almost impossible choice – marry a man she doesn’t love, or give up her baby. Beautifully written, and painfully emotive, this is a book to devour in one evening.

Gino’s Hidden Italy: How to cook like a true Italian – Gino D’Acampo If a new cookbook is on her wishlist, this TV programme tie-in should prove a winner. 80 authentic Italian recipes are included, many of which are local specialities or traditional dishes with a Gino twist. Recipes are straightforward to follow, with dishes such as Baked Salmon with a Pistachio, Honey and Herb Crust, and Stuffed Lake Como Pie.

Elizabeth: The Forgotten Years – John Guy John Guy is one of the most respected Tudor historians of our times. Here he reveals aspects of Elizabeth I’s later life previously lost in time. Painstakingly researched, the biography includes extracts from numerous letters from Elizabeth herself and details of both her private and public life. A must for fans of historical biographies.

Registration for Bike4Life

NOW OPEN

Due to overwhelming demand, registration for the Bike4Life Ride Out and Festival, taking place on Sunday 30th April 2017, has now opened, and motorcyclists are being encouraged to sign up as places on the Ride Out are limited.

The event, which is organised by and raises funds for Midlands Air Ambulance Charity in association with the Safer Roads Partnership, is established as one of the best ride out and festival motorbike experiences in the country. The Ride Out, which sees over 3,500 motorbikes, starts at Meole Brace in Shrewsbury travelling 23 miles to RAF Cosford airfield, home to the incredible Bike4Life Festival. The Festival will include live music, breath-taking displays, exhibitions, stalls, refreshments and more. With over 6,000 additional people attending, it’s a great day out for bikers, families and the local community. Jason Levy from Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, and chair of the Bike4Life organising committee, said: “We created Bike4Life with the Safer Roads Partnership to give our supportive motorbike fans a really fantastic day out, and to also raise awareness of biker safety as sadly we tend to and

Gadgets They'll Love TECHNOLOGY TREATS FOR THE ONE YOU LOVE THIS VALENTINE'S Valentine’s Day has been with us for a long time: it was first associated with courtly love in the 14th century, and by the 18th century it had become very like the Valentine’s Day we celebrate today - lovers would share flowers, cards and confectionery to demonstrate their affection for each other. Today we still do much the same, although the cards are rarely handwritten and the flowers might be ordered online and delivered by a man in a van, but today’s lovers have another kind of gift to gladly give: gadgets! First things first: don’t make the mistake of buying a ‘pinkified’ version of a supposedly male thing, such as a pink power drill, for the person you love. Drills aren’t romantic no matter what colour they happen to be, or how keen on DIY your partner is. And if you’re thinking of buying your partner a wearable device such as a Fitbit fitness tracker, you need to be 100% sure the message you’re sending isn’t going to be interpreted as “you’re lazy!” or even worse, “you’re too fat!” The best Valentine’s Day gifts are things you can share, such as the excellent Polaroid ZIP mobile printer. At £99 it isn’t cheap, but what it delivers is priceless: old-school Polaroids from your cutting-edge camera phone. There’s something magical about the prints that today’s selfies don’t quite deliver, and it’s a fun way to record your Valentine’s Day celebrations. If your partner is the techy type already, there’s a good chance that he or she already has the technology they want - and that’s an opportunity for you, because there are all kinds of accessories for their most commonly used items, including gorgeous leather cases for phones and tablets, luxury bands for smartwatches and all kinds of cases and protectors. Just watch out if you’re buying leather, as many cheaper accessories use ‘bonded leather’, which is more like vinyl. Real leather looks, smells and ages better than man-made bonded leather does. There are plenty of electronic accessories too. If your loved one is a music fan, the headphones that came with his or her phone probably aren’t up to much - so even a relatively inexpensive pair of headphones can deliver a massive upgrade to the sound quality. Just watch out if your partner has an iPhone 7, as that doesn’t have a headphone socket; it does come with an adapter but the best option is to buy headphones that connect to its Lightning socket instead of a traditional headphone socket. That way if the adapter gets lost, which it will, the music doesn’t have to stop. Another good option for music fans is a Bluetooth speaker, which can take music from any source - iPad, laptop or phone - and play it back for hours between recharges. There’s a dizzying range to choose from, including the superb Denon Envaya Mini (£99), which sounds better than speakers twice the price, and the Sumvision Psyc Monic (£38), which delivers incredible bass response. And if your partner’s something of a water baby, the £9.99 SoundBot HD speaker is designed to work in the shower. It even has hands-free calling via your phone, which strikes us as a really terrible idea, but with a range of 33 feet it means enjoying music without having to worry about expensive electronic devices getting soaked. Who knows, Images top to bottom: Booqpad iPad case; Apple Watch you might even get away with buying the pink one. band from eBay; Denon Envaya Mini portable speaker; SoundBot HD shower speaker

Goldilocks

Notes from your local Muxton Councillor

AND THE THREE BEARS

Just when the main pantomime season is coming to an end, oh no it isn’t, because The Crown Players are still putting the finishing touches to their own show.

Many Muxton School parents, myself included, are opposed to the change in school catchment area proposed by Telford and Wrekin Council. Other areas are being given the chance to have a shared catchment area. No such offer is being made to Muxton parents. Well done to the Muxton Action Group for co-ordinating the response of parents, hopefully together we can ensure Muxton is treated fairly.

This year they will be performing Goldilocks & The Three Bears with a twist, at the all new Charlton School in Wellington, every night during February Half term including an additional Matinee & Evening show on Saturday 25th February. Having raised funds for over 45 years by entertaining the local people with an annual Pantomime for a variety of charities, this year The Crown Players are looking forward to raising much needed funds for The Teenage Cancer Trust and seeing their grand total raised to date going over £100,000 in the past 15 years alone.

Planning News: The inquiry into both the Local Plan and the Muxton Lane developments will have taken place by the time you read this. With the Council losing the Haygate Fields appeal, all eyes are on these two which could have a significant impact across the Borough. An application has already gone in for 600 houses, shops, pub and extra care facility on land between Breton Park and Honnington Grange!

Online Dating

NOT JUST FOR TWENTYSOMETHINGS

feel comfortable to do so. • Never release financial information or give in to pressure to lend money. • Meet in public and stay in public on your first couple of dates and always let a friend know where you are, and who you’re meeting.

Setting up a successful online dating profile The UK dating site Match.com says that when registering with a site it’s important to answer questions accurately for the best possible chance of finding your ideal match. When writing about your personality they recommend that you should “avoid clichés and overused phrases such as ‘looking for love’. Instead, consider what makes you different from everybody else … above all, be sure to inject humour to show people how friendly, fun and approachable you are.”

My sympathies were aroused the first time I met Abby, a friend-of-a-friend who had recently moved to my neighbourhood after a divorce. Aged 47, she had made the move in order to seek a different life for herself and her fifteen-year-old son. However two years later, after regular meet-ups at which I offered coffee, a supportive chat and sometimes – literally – a shoulder to cry on, Abby was still bemoaning her inability to meet a new man.

Match.com recommends reading other profiles for inspiration or asking a friend to describe your personality. People tend to scan profiles rather than read them in depth, so an eyecatching opening paragraph, using key words that relate to your passions and interests, will capture more interest. As you can imagine, a profile with a photo attracts more attention than one without, but there are a few factors to bear in mind when choosing an image. The dating site Zoosk found that women get 60% more attention if their photo is taken indoors, while men get 19% more attention if theirs is taken outside, particularly if the photo includes other friends or involves an active pursuit.

That’s when my sympathy began to wear a little thin. Each time, after attending a local fundraising event, pub quiz night or social gathering, she would turn up at my house with a woeful tale of dashed expectations. The men she met were either ‘too old’, ‘too young’ or ‘too married’. On every occasion I would remind her that online dating was her best option for meeting a new partner, but she remained stubbornly unmoved, even when I pointed out that nowadays around one in four relationships begins online.

Are there alternatives to one-to-one meetings?

The process of online dating is very simple: just create a profile, check out potential matches, communicate with your chosen date through direct messages and then arrange to meet. Given the scare stories we hear about fake profiles, romance frauds and stalking, Abby was right to be cautious, but probably not to the point of spoiling her best statistical chances of finding love.

Some sites are free to join, whereas an average paid-for site might cost between £13 and £50 per month. Some online services charge considerably higher membership fees.

Staying safe online It’s natural to feel a little nervous about meeting a stranger for the first time, but there are certain common sense precautions you can take to stay safe. • Check if the dating site you are using is a member of the Online Dating Association (ODA) by looking for the ODA’s logo on the site.

Many dating websites hold singles events where you can get together with other single people in your area and test out the chemistry face-to-face. Some websites, such as the Londonbased DoingSomething.co.uk, are set up so members can suggest fun activities that other members can join in with, taking the awkwardness out of meeting for the first time.

What do I have to pay?

Are there sites specifically for mature people? You don’t have to restrict yourself to age-specific sites unless you feel more comfortable in doing so. Two of the most popular sites for UK dating are ukmaturedating.com and maturefreeandsingle.com. The popularity of online sites has boomed recently with the addition of mobile apps, with 37% of people surveyed by smartphone manufacturer HTC saying they had met a partner via a dating app.

• Choose a username that doesn’t reveal who you are and don’t give away your surname, contact information, home address or place of work when first setting up your profile.

The message has finally got through to Abby, who went on her first date through an online site last week. Unfortunately he wasn’t the man of her dreams, but she nevertheless enjoyed the date. Thanks to that experience, she’s confident that it’s now only a matter of time before she meets Mr Right.

• Don’t give away too much information about yourself right away. Take things slowly, sharing more information when you

Kitchen Recipe

Take some... Traditional values and service Established in 2003, The Kitchen Depot is a family-owned and run business that remains true to our founding values of honesty, integrity and sheer professionalism. We take immense pride in our reputation for service and commitment to our customers, with more than half of our business coming from customer recommendations to their family and friends.

...add a dash of… Quality and Value

All of our kitchens are manufactured to an exceptionally high German specification, on site, in our own factory and by our own people. That way, we have total control over the product quality, the production timescales AND the manufacturing costs. With no middle-man – you buy direct and we are able to pass these time and cost savings directly onto our customers.

…then a big chunk of…

Ownership and Responsibility

Unusual in this insincere world, admittedly. But we mean it. We are totally committed to providing you with the best kitchen, at the best price, installed with the highest level of service and professionalism. And on the exceptionally rare occasion that something could have been done better – we hold our hands up – and put it right. Fast. No fuss. No hassle. No argument. Just sorted.

...a soupçon of…Harmony At The Kitchen Depot, we know that we are only as good as our people. They ARE The Kitchen Depot brand. That’s why we look after our staff every bit as well as we look after our customers. Because we know that happy workers, pulling together in harmony, make for happy customers.
