Home Makeover Experts

LAUNCH NEW LOCAL SHOWROOM

With more than 200 showrooms across four continents and around 8,000 kitchen and bathroom installations carried out globally each month, Granite Transformations lays claim to being the world’s leading home transformations company. Its tough, slimline and lastingly beautiful kitchen worktops and bathroom surfaces will instantly transform outdated décor and come with an unrivalled lifetime material warranty. So news that a Granite Transformations showroom is opening locally at Battlefield Enterprise Park, Shrewsbury will be of interest to house-proud homeowners looking for high quality, low cost kitchen and bathroom makeovers. With dozens of different Italian granite, quartz and eco-friendly recycled glass worktop designs and colours to choose from, plus replacement cabinet doors and glass mosaic splashbacks, there’s a delightful new look for every home. “We know that people around here appreciate quality, value and good design, so many will already be aware of the Granite Transformations name and reputation. But seeing is believing, so our new showroom allows householders to touch and feel our beautiful, hardwearing surfaces and view all the stylish colours we offer,” says showroom owner Richard. “We promise to look after our customers well, advising them on interior design options, measuring up their existing units

and fittings, fabricating their worktops and other surfaces in our workshop, then installing them with the minimum of fuss, usually in just a day or so. We aim to make your makeover a pleasant, stress-free experience with a delightful outcome.” Affordability is one key to Granite Transformations’ market success, with a complete kitchen makeover, including worktops, replacement doors, drawer fronts, sink units and monobloc taps, typically costing less than half the price of new fitted units. There’s less disruption too, since there’s no ripping out or demolition, no dust and debris, and just two factorytrained fitters will carry out all the work, even laying floor tiles and glass mosaic splashbacks if required. “Apart from saving you money and stress, kitchen refacing retains your existing cabinet carcases and familiar layout, saving on landfill waste, rewiring and major plumbing work,” says Richard. “Bathroom makeovers can usually be achieved without ripping out old ceramic tiles and we can fabricate new bath surrounds and vanity units. We can smarten up utility rooms too, running a wipe-clean countertop, over a dishwasher, washing machine and storage areas.” The Shrewsbury showroom offers one of the largest selections of made-to-measure replacement doors and drawer fronts, which can be expertly fitted alongside the worktops. There are 20 different styles and over 30 colours to create the best combination for your home, including woodgrains, ultragloss solid shades, matt finishes, metallics, fashionable neutral tones, even paintable vinyl for a custom look. Naturally, there is a complementary choice of handles, knobs, drawer pulls and such fittings as soft-close hinges, together with accessories like pelmets, shelves, canopies and wine racks.

WEDDING FEATURE

Finding the Dress When it comes to planning a wedding every girls’ number one priority is finding her dream dress. And fortunately, if you are working to a strict budget, there is more choice than ever before these days, at a price you can afford. Local bridal boutiques are great. Not only do you receive the best in personalised customer service, but there’s a fabulous selection of lesser known brands and independent labels, that help to ensure your dress will be unique. Buying your wedding gown is the most special purchase you’ll ever make, and although it might be a ong process before you find ‘the one’ - it will be worth it in the end.

How to find ‘the one’… Be completely open minded as soon as you start your hunt for the perfect dress. You probably will have some preconceived ideas about what will suit you, and so will naturally avoid certain looks. But it really is essential to break from these thoughts and try as many different styles as you can get your hands on.

OF YOUR DREAMS

Minimalist, sleek and modern might have been what you had in mind, but full-on fairytale princess could be just the thing to make your dreams come true. It’s crucial to think about your height, figure and shape when looking for your gown. Carefully consider what is most flattering and what will make you feel truly special but comfortable too. Strapless, shoulder-revealing designs might look perfect on the model, but will they really be right for you? Make sure you listen carefully to the honest opinions of your family and friends - they see you differently to how you see yourself. And, always take advantage of the professional advice that’s on offer from sales staff - they deal with hundreds of brides everyday and are well versed in what works best for all different shapes and sizes. Upon settling on the style that’s going to make you look gorgeous, consider colours. Shades of white and cream can vary dramatically and as great as a stark white gown might look on a dark haired tanned bride, it could completely wash-out someone who is pale and fair - a complexion enhancing creamy, ivory hue would look so much better. For those who love something that bit different though, embrace bold colour, statement design and enchanting embellishments. Just make sure that everything combines to make you look and feel beautiful.

Finding the Wedding Venue

THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU

Choosing the wedding venue that’s perfect for what you’ve got planned for your big day is one of the most challenging decisions you’ll have to make. It needs to be practical, affordable and ideal for you and your guests. There’s certainly a lot to consider and knowing where to start can be hard-work. That’s why we’ve compiled a guide to the main things you need to think about when you start your search. 1.

Seeking out a venue will most likely be one of the first things you’ll do, so try to establish a rough budget and get an idea of how many guests you’ll be inviting.

2. Think about the kind of wedding you want: a lavish

large-scale affair? Or something a little more lowkey? The venue provides the back-drop to your big day, so it needs to reflect and complement the style of your nuptials.

8

3. You’ve probably got a good idea of which season

you want to marry in. Make sure that you get a look at photos of the venue at that particular time of year and don’t be afraid to ask about heating/ air-conditioning and lighting.

4. If you long for a contemporary, minimalist wedding,

then you’ll need to find a venue which is designed in that style. It’s best to choose a modern building to house proceedings and important to look for a sleek interior that will complement the modern look you favour. However, if something a little more tradition is more appealing, then check-out the array of stately homes and period properties that could be perfect for you. Just make sure that they’re easily accessible for all of your guests.

5. Find out what the venue offers you. Will you be

renting just the space? Or will table, chair and linen hire be available also?

6. Although the car park may look big when its

empty, will it accommodate all of your guests’ vehicles when full? Think about how your guests will get to the location and if they’ll be able to park safely and easily when they arrive.

7. Find out if catering is carried out in-house by the

venue’s own staff or if outside caterers are used. See if you can get a taste of the kind of food that’s on offer. Also, ask if the waiters are employed by the venue or if they’re from an agency.

8. You’ll need to establish if there is more than one wedding co-ordinator or master of ceremonies. Do you get to meet and discuss your day with that person directly before your wedding?

9. Don’t act in haste. It’s worth visiting all of the

venues on your shortlist before you make a decision. You may come across a venue that seems perfect, but before you sign the contract, ensure that you are thoroughly satisfied that it will provide you with everything you and your guests require.

10. Don’t feel pressured to book or sign the contract

if you’re presented with a special offer or cut rate - any good venue will give you time to go away and think before you make your final decision. by Helen Taylor

Planning the Perfect Wedding WEDDING EXHIBITION AT TELFORD SHOPPING CENTRE 28TH - 31ST JANUARY As February approaches romance is in the air. January has brought a flurry of excitement with Christmas, New Year and dreams of Valentine’s Day engagements it’s the perfect time to think about wedding plans. Whilst thoughts of everything you desire for your perfect day may seem somewhat overwhelming, help is on hand at Telford Shopping Centre’s Wedding Exhibition. Set to inspire you for your big day the Wedding Exhibition is taking place from Thursday 28th – Sunday 31st January. The four day event will see the Centre transformed with exhibitors from across the region offering everything you need including venues, dresses, suits, cars, photographers, linens, decorations and much more, making it the largest wedding event in Shropshire. Along with the exhibitors, your favourite high street stores will be showcasing the very best they have to offer to ensure your wedding is just perfect. Located throughout the shopping centre, the Wedding Exhibition is a must-attend event for all future brides and grooms, where you’ll find plenty to inspire you, whether you’re just starting out with your planning or picking up those last few bits and pieces.

Telford Shopping Centre is no stranger to wedding planning. Last year, it hosted one for a particularly special couple in Sherwood Square. The couple were long serving staff members who had been inspired by previous wedding exhibitions and wanted to celebrate their special day with their friends and family including their extended work family. See the wedding video at the centre on its YouTube page - www.youtube.com/ TelfordCentre Tracy Hadley, Marketing and Events Manager at Telford Shopping Centre, said: “We all know how tricky wedding planning can be, especially as there’s so much to think about, and this event is the perfect starting point for any future brides and grooms. The Wedding Exhibition is the largest of its kind in the County and offers everything you need - it really is a one stop shop destination. So, whether you want a big Cinderella style wedding, or a low key affair, our exhibitors and stores will be there to inspire you. We’re also pleased to welcome a number of entertainers too, who will add something a little different to your big day. “We know that wedding planning comes with a budget and to help make those pennies go even further we have teamed up with several of the exhibitors to offer exclusive offers during the show, which will be available during the period of the event via the event website page at www.telfordshopping.co.uk.” Why not take a break during your browsing, at one of the Centre’s many eateries, then once the day is over treat yourself to a relaxing meal at one of the restaurants in Southwater or maybe even a movie.” The Wedding Exhibition will be taking place at Telford Shopping Centre from Thursday 28th - Sunday 31st January. Dress to Impress If you’ve received an all-important wedding invite then you’ll want to dress to impress. A smartly tailored suit is essential, but finding one that fits perfectly - and is within your budget - is easier said than done. That’s why we’ve compiled a useful guide that’ll help you to find a suit that’s not only perfect for the occasion but the most flattering fit for your body type too. If you’re a tall, small or large guy who generally struggles to find clothes that fit well, don’t even bother traipsing around the high street until you’ve checked out stores that offer ranges tailored to meet your individual requirements. Fortunately there’s plenty of choice nowadays. Debenhams have a ‘Big and Tall’ collection, with longer sleeve and leg lengths, as well as sizes up to 6XL. For short guys there’s a great selection on the ASOS website, which feature shorter arm and leg measurements and sizes starting at XXXS. When you’re suit shopping you’ll need to find something that’s suitable for the time of year. Light colours, like stone grey or powder blue, work well for a summer wedding. Think carefully about the fabric too; avoid heavy material and instead go for airy fabrics that’ll keep you cool, like full linen or linen cotton blends. Charcoal grey and navy blue hues make for the perfect winter wedding suit. A weightily, wool blend fabric is sure to keep you warm whatever the weather.

GUIDE FOR THE GUYS

When you’re making your choice consider your body shape: Large guys: Don’t be tempted to buy a baggy suit - even though it feels comfy - as the excess material will create a messy silhouette which is unflattering for your frame. The material should rest lightly on your body - not gripping it tightly or hanging too loose. Choose a simple suit and avoid strong colours or patterns, opt for lightweight fabrics too, so that you don’t add additional bulk. Small guys: Create the illusion of height and a leaner silhouette by choosing a slim-fitting or skinny suit. Keep trousers neat, narrow and slightly cropped. You may be tempted to go for a longer length, thinking that you’ll create the look of lengthier legs but actually it’ll have the opposite effect. A subtle turn-up or crop that finishes a few centimetres above the ankle is ideal. Vertical stripes are perfect for smaller guys as they create an illusion of length. Tall guys: Like all men, tall guys need a suit that fits well. Excess material, ill fitting jackets and trousers and sloppy cuts do nothing to flatter a tall frame. Tall, slim guys should aim to break-up their imposing frame by opting for three piece suits or double breasted jackets. These serve to add bulk and disguise some of the length. Textured weaves work on your physique too, so if you fancy something a little different try a subtle pattern.

Here’s the key things to consider when assessing the fit of a suit: Shoulders: Suit shoulders should hug your own, they should look neat and be comfortable. Material that is too tight or baggy across the shoulders indicates the wrong fit. If stretching and movement makes the seams feel tight, opt for a bigger size. Chest: There should be enough movement in the suit jacket for you to sit and move comfortably when it’s buttoned, but it shouldn’t be too loose. Check the space between the buttoned jacket and your chest by placing your fist between the two, if the gap is any wider than your fist, you’ll need a smaller size. Sleeves: Sleeves that are too long on a jacket that fits perfectly aren’t a problem, as they can be easily altered by a tailor, however sleeves that are too short are a big no-no. If you have difficulty finding sleeves that are long enough then try a range designed for taller men. Length: If you can reach the hem of your jacket when your arms are straight by your sides then it’s too long. Modern jackets should sit an inch or two below the cuffs. Trousers: Your trousers shouldn’t be too tight or too loose, a slim fit is generally most flattering for men. Ensure that the length is adequate when teamed with your shoes, if the trousers are too long they can be turned-up easily by a tailor.

HOW TO GET INTO THAT DRESS Whether it’s be my wife or be my Valentine, Heaven has the answer to help you lose those extra mince pies and look your very best on those special occasions. World re-known therapist to the stars and royalty and local businesswoman Deborah Mitchell gives some bridal beauty advice. “Every bride should start months in advance with regular facials, detox massages and the BeeSlim or Bee Slim Rituals, it is so important to get your skin used to the products, and to allow them to work their magic months before: there is nothing worse than a bride to be leaving her facials and fitting into the dress to one or two weeks before, because not only is she not giving the products enough time to work, as with any new products in the skin, they will detox and clear out the pores, so there will be the inevitable breakout, and you don’t want that just before the big day! The 3 most important rules to follow when it comes to essential skincare are cleanse, exfoliate and drink plenty of water. I am always asked this question and it’s always the same answer: keep your skin super clean and you will avoid the dreaded spot breakouts! “Every woman wants to look her best on her wedding day because it’s the one day in her life that she will photographed more than any other day in her life, so its key she looks 18

her absolute best, her make-up will only look great if the make-up artist on her special day has a flawless canvas to work on, so that’s where her pre-wedding skincare regime will ensure the canvas is ready for the masterpiece. The BeeSlim ritual I have created would help not only a total body detox aiding slimming elimination and firming skin, but the ritual aids facial contouring and toning of facial expressions, so that the ultimate face you wear to your wedding is as perfect as can be.

skin, but without the obvious painful sting. It smoothes the frown lines on the forehead and gets to work on wrinkles, and on a bride’s wedding day will act as a topcoat and primer for the skin, giving the bride a smooth surface for foundation application. If you wanted that little extra I would suggest you also use my hydrogels treatment toners, they not only clean, hyrdrate and firm the skin, but they are a fabulous makeup primer giving a lasting flawless make-up!”

Other than skincare, the essential components to having beautiful skin is without a doubt as they say “Skin Deep” so a healthy diet and lifestyle is key, however that doesn’t mean to say you can’t afford to enjoy yourself once in a while…everything in moderation!

To BeeSlim & perfect for your Hen parties, or even a rainy day in the couples room with champagne and strawberries, the choice is always Heaven.

If this all seems a lot to be doing in preparation and you would like one thing that could help with your beauty regime for the day I would suggest you buy ‘The’ Bee Venom Mask – (Insider Secret: The Duchess of Cambridge favoured this above all else in preparation for her big day with Prince Wills) the bee venom works to control the facial muscles giving an instant lifting and tightening effect almost mimicking the effect a bee sting has on the

Beauty

NEW BEGINNINGS when our hair has to cope with the demands of icy winds and central heating. A complex blend of Shea butter, marula oil and fruit extracts works to hydrate, support elasticity and make hair more manageable. Look out for the brand in Boots. Tinted lip balms always summon up teenage memories of strawberry flavoured gloop in a tin. Thankfully, they’ve come a very long way, as the new benecos Natural Shiny Lip Colour (£6.95) proves. They’re wonderfully hydrating and can help prevent chapped, cracked lips, so are perfect for winter. They’re available in three colours, including Rusty Rose – a natural, subtle shade that suits most skin tones.

January is the perfect time to give your beauty routine a shake up and try something a little bit different… Stuck in a make-up rut? You might want to consider booking yourself in for a make-up lesson. Some of the big brands offer mini makeovers, as it’s a chance for them to show off their products, but if you really want to get out of that rut, try a M.A.C. Full Make Up Lesson (£50), which lasts for 90 minutes and will give you bags of inspiration. Not quite ready to take the plunge? A new nail polish is a great baby step. Nails Inc have added four new colours to their NailKale range, each priced at £14. The NailKale polishes are designed to give your nails a vitamin and mineral boost, as well as colour, to leave them harder, stronger and healthier. The new colours include Regents Mews, a rich crushed damson, as sported by Alexa Chung, pictured above. Fancy trying a different shampoo and conditioner? I’m loving the SuperFruit Complex 10in-1 Renewal Shampoo (£10) and Conditioner (£10.99), by SheaMoisture. SheaMoisture has been going for over 100 years in the States, but has only recently made it across to the UK. The 10-in-1 system is incredibly nourishing, so is perfect for this time of year,

If you have eczema you may well have heard of purepotions – a range of creams that have been specially formulated to soothe skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis. Personally, I think it’s a great range for most skin types. Each product is packed with nourishing natural ingredients, such as Shea butter, hemp seed oil and chamomile extract, and has none of the synthetic ‘nasties’ that can so easily dry and irritate skin. Try the Scar Oil (£18.99), which contains rosehip – scientifically proven to help improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks, uneven pigmentation and signs of ageing. Now I do love a multi-tasker, so when I heard of a shoe cream that you can use as a lip balm, moisturiser, hair conditioner and massage oil, I really was intrigued! Po-Zu’s new Edible Shoe Cream (£7.50) is formulated from coconut oil and is so pure that you can actually eat it. It’s a really handy tin to keep in your handbag to treat chapped lips, dry patches of skin, flyaway hair and so on. (And, of course, it’ll keep your leather shoes looking great too.)

New Year

NEW YOU!

It’s January, and having eaten and drunk your way through the contents of at least three shopping trolleys during the festive season, you are feeling in need of a quick fix so you can begin to feel healthy again. The time of the year doesn’t help. Spring is still a couple of months away and although you’d love to go for a bracing walk in the park, you know that after half an hour in muddy boots, being soaked by persistent rain, you’ll give up and go home. But what’s the alternative when you need a regular exercise regime to help you lose weight and regain vitality? Working out at home with the help of a DVD has become a popular alternative to going out to a dance class or a gym. The great advantage is that it allows you to design a programme to suit your own needs and preferences. However if - like me - you’re not a great self-motivator, you may find it hard to keep going without a human instructor to give encouragement. After several attempts to follow an aerobic routine in my lounge I felt that the floorboards had suffered enough and made the decision to join a regular exercise class. So how do you find a movement class that will suit you? A quick browse round the websites of local clubs is likely to reveal a baffling array of exercise styles with exotic-sounding names such as Zumba, Pilates, Ashtanga Yoga, Spinning, Hatha Yoga and Tai Chi. It’s nice to be spoiled for choice, but there are a few things to consider before you start shopping for the lycra bodysuit and matching accessories. How old are you? Do you have any medical conditions? How much exercise do you normally take (for example, do you regularly walk, bicycle, play a sport, or are you a complete couch potato)? If a leisurely stroll around the supermarket is your main form of exercise then a cardiovascular workout is probably not the place to start. You need to build your programme slowly, so it may benefit you to start with a beginners’ yoga class where you will be concentrating on breathing and stretching rather than trying to push yourself way beyond your normal limits.

However you decide to pursue your new exercise regime, make a promise to yourself to keep it up. Don’t make the common mistake of assuming that yoga is just about bending your torso into strange positions whilst inhaling incense and chanting. Real yoga is definitely not for the fainthearted and its emphasis on slow movements, posture and deep breathing really helps to build muscular strength and improve balance. If you are new to exercise classes you will be glad to know that yoga is about doing as much as you feel your own body can manage. It is definitely not a competitive sport. There are a variety of different kinds of yoga, some of which are really quite challenging for a beginner, so do have a chat with the instructor before booking your course to make sure that you have chosen the right type for you. Pilates borrows heavily from Yoga and was originally devised

24

to help injured dancers and athletes. Once again there is an emphasis on good posture and exercises are designed to strengthen the spine, improve circulation and open up the joints. When I started Pilates I found some exercises really quite tough – particularly those that focused on small muscle groups around the joints – but as with yoga, you can look forward to a fantastic sense of release and revitalisation at the end of each class. There are also a number of websites where you can subscribe to online fitness classes which are available in everything from high intensity interval training (HIIT) to dancing to yoga, with modifications for all fitness levels. Les Mills branded classes and are taught by trainers in gyms around the country and now they’re all available online to suit your schedule, with carefully selected instructors and music to motivate you through each routine. The on demand classes gives you access to a huge library of proven workouts, a 10-day free trial is followed by a monthly subscription of £9.95 (www.lesmills.com). However you decide to pursue your new exercise regime, make a promise to yourself to keep it up. You won’t really start feeling the benefit until you’ve settled in to your new classes and begun to master those new moves. After a few weeks you’ll be surprised to find how much better you feel, both physically and mentally. It may take a few attempts before you find a class that suits you, but it will be worth it in the end. Make sure the New Year really does mean a new you.

Soft Tissue Injuries So the seasonal bad weather is upon us and so in this month’s article I thought I would talk about immediate post injury/first aid care for soft tissue injuries and with the frosty and snowy weather on its way it can often be a hazardous time.

Compression:

We do see an increase in injuries such as soft tissue injuries for example ligament sprains from patients slipping and falling in the cold and icy conditions. Obviously the best form of treatment is prevention so just simple things like making sure you have the appropriate shoes on and make sure paths in and around your property are gritted.

Elevation:

If a fall or injury does occur, here are some tips to help ease the pain. Most of you will have heard of RICE this is an acronym for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation and is essential for management of soft tissue injuries.

REST:

Rest is essential to help take the strain off tissues which are trying to heal. Rest will prevent further swelling, pain and further injury. It should be used for a period of time which enables the limb or body part to begin to function better.

ICE: Ice can be a valuable treatment in easing pain and reducing

inflammation and swelling. Controlling the swelling can reduce the risk of increased scar tissue build up and further joint irritation. It is recommended that we ice for around 15-20 minutes at a time for up to 48 hours post injury. It is important to make sure you have good sensation as if you haven’t you are at risk of ice burns. A good tip is to place a thin damp tea towel between the skin and ice and this will act as a barrier to the skin preventing ice burns.

IN THE WINTER

This again is useful in controlling swelling and managing pain. There are various supports and braces available but a simple tubigrip stocking from your local chemist will suffice. Usually used for extended periods but never through the night. This is where the body part is placed in an elevated position to aid venous blood flow to aid in the reduction of swelling and in turn reducing pain. Remember if you do injure yourself and the pain and dysfunction is severe, it is advisable to seek medical attention. All our physiotherapists are state registered and qualified to assess and treat soft tissue injuries. If you are concerned about your mobility or the mobility issues of a friend or loved one, we do have a physiotherapist who specialises in this area. She can provide specific exercises, balance re-education and falls prevention advice, which can help rehabilitate and maximise potential. This type of therapy can be carried out at the clinic or in comfort of your own home through our home visiting service.

NEW 12 WEEK PROGRAMME LOSE WEIGHT + FEEL BETTER “MIRujI HAS HELPEd ME LOSE 3 STONE ANd I FEEL BETTER IN EvERy WAy” Ann, 69, has lost three stone, ditched her painkillers and “got her life in order” since beginning therapy at Miruji. The former fraud investigator from Shrewsbury, was forced to retire with agonising back pain and said she was taking eight strong painkillers just to get through each day. She began using the Miruji chair and has not looked back. “I noticed the benefit right away,” she said. “I’ve had a terribly bad back for most of my life. I’ve tried mas-

sage and various other interventions but the pain still prevailed.” Ann said she lost three stones “very quickly”, taking herself in hand after the audio encouraged her to “get her life in order”. I do still take some painkillers but I am in no way dependent on them as I used to be. I know Miruji may not be the ultimate solution to my back pain but it is very, very effective and extremely helpful. “I am hooked for life.

“EvERyONE SAId IT WOuLdN’T WORK, BuT I LOST 2 STONE” SUSAn Childs thought Miruji sounded ‘too good to be true’ until she tried it for herself – and lost two stone. “I was curious about it and thought I’d give it a try,” she said. That was 12 months ago. Now she is singing Miruji’s praises from the rooftops. “Everyone I talk to said it couldn’t possibly work, but I don’t think they fully understand it.” She has proved them wrong, and then some, by losing two stone, from 14st 4lb to 12st 4lb and

dropping several dress sizes. “You have to be ready to make that commitment to go regularly,” she said. “I never in a million years thought I could do this. It’s absolutely brilliant. I’m pulling jeans out from my wardrobe that I haven’t been anywhere near for four years. I used to hide it all under the baggiest of tops. I am so much more confident, my husband is really, really impressed with me.” Susan eats smaller meals, but nothing in between and she still has a pudding every day.

NHS MANAGER SAyS “I FEEL SO MucH BETTER” nHS manager Sonia began coming to Miruji, attracted by the idea of having some time to herself, for relaxation and with a view to losing some weight. She has a very busy job, with competing demands upon her time and is mum to an eight-year-old daughter. “What was remarkable was not so much the weight-loss, although I did lose half a stone,” she said, “but it was what I would call the ‘well-ness factor’. I felt so much better – more centred, relaxed and positive. There was a whole range of benefits to it that I hadn’t considered when I started out.” Wellbeing Spa

32

Sonia, 44, from Shrewsbury, says it was when she couldn’t go for three weeks that she realised what MBT was doing for her. “It was only then that I fully appreciated all the benefits,” she said. “It leaves me feeling so much calmer. I used to wake up a lot through the night. Now I’m sleeping so much deeper and I wake up refreshed and revitalised. “I would say that above all, I have gained a sense of peace. I think it is having that little bit of me time, twice a week. You sit in that chair, relaxing and listening to the audio knowing it is doing weird and wonderful things for you.” 9 Roushill, Shrewsbury SY1 1PQ

“MIRujI HAS HELPEd ME LOSE OvER 5 STONE” IF Angie Robinson’s husband Tom ever wins the lottery, he says he wants to invest it all in Miruji. Seventy-two year-old Angie, from Roden, was a dress size 32 and barely able to leave the house. Now, with the help of the Sit and Slim programme, she has lost six and a half stone and is a healthier size 24-26 and far more agile. “I’m so overwhelmed with the chair; it’s unreal. I’ve been able to walk better, go upstairs better. I was a complete mess; I was getting to be like a hermit. I didn’t want to go anywhere. “My husband Tom said he’s noticed such a difference in my wellbeing. My whole personality has changed, I’m more relaxed. I had a job to

keep up with him when we’re walking. Now it’s the other way around. He’s absolutely delighted for me.” She has macular degenerative disease, emphysema, sciatica and short-term memory loss, following an accident when she slipped and hit her head on concrete. It was when she was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes on top of her other problems, that she decided to try Miruji. She is so proud that she has achieved such sustained weightloss for herself and is determined to continue: “I love it. I can’t wait – I look forward to ‘my therapy’. It’s so relaxing. I can’t describe to anyone how much it’s made me feel in myself, just wellbeing.

NASREEM LOST OvER 4 STONE uSING THE SIT & SLIM cHAIR

nASReeM is typical of many women these days who are busy with work, children and making sure the housework is done. Nasreem had neglected herself over the last few years because she was too busy looking after everyone else. She was left feeling worn out, frustrated and tired. Nasreem did what many people do and started comfort eating. Before she knew it she was a size 20. She went along for the Sit & Slim free trial and has never looked back. She says “When I

went along the first time I didn’t know what to expect but I was so unhappy with myself I was prepared to try anything. When I finished the treatment I felt absolutely wonderful. I felt energised and more positive about being able to lose weight and keep it off. For the first time in years I was looking after myself, it was my ‘me time’. I lost a stone after just 5 weeks and the more I lost the better I felt. I have now lost 4 and a half stone and gone from a size 20 to a size 12.”

“MIRujI HAS cuREd My dEPRESSION” A head-on traffic collision in 2002 left Judith Morgan, 47, with a trapped nerve and terrible neck pain which interfered with sleep and contributed to stress at work. “When I went for the Miruji trial I suddenly found I could turn my head better than I had been able to in years. I’ve also lost half a stone, although for me, it is less about the weight-loss.” Judith also suffers from hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) and had been taking antidepressants but says the Miruji therapy www.miruji.com

has allowed her to come off the tablets. “I felt so good after the first session, I thought ‘I like this’,” she said. “I am anti-depressant free for the first time in nearly seven years. Judith believes the therapy has changed the way she feels about herself, through tuning in to her subconscious: ““I tell all my friends – you don’t have to be overweight to benefit. It’s the whole package. I come out feeling utterly refreshed and people notice the difference in me afterwards.

SKI HOLIDAYS

Looking for a great place to ski? Andorra is an absolute must for skiers of all abilities. Lively with some surprisingly fantastic skiing, the principality of Andorra is a great location for value skiing in a different atmosphere to mainstream alpine Europe. In addition to the highaltitude skiing, activities and renowned nightlife in Pas there is also tax-free shopping in Andorra La Vella. It’s a fantastic all-round winter getaway. As for the skiing, there is sizeable terrain to explore both in Vallnord and Grandvalira and off-piste lovers and boarders will certainly find fun up at Arcalis. The ski areas in the country are particularly good for beginner skiers. Grandvalira benefits from some great wide-open pistes, gentle gradients on beginner slopes not to mention the fact that Andorra has some of the best ski schools there are. As well as finding English speaking instructors in most ski schools in Andorra, in the Vallnord ski area which covers Arinsal and La Massana the ski school is BASIapproved meaning you know you’re in good hands.

being a quieter and more comfortable alternative resort with the same skiing. Also worth a visit is the Caldea spa where you can spend a day being pampered with an array of pools, baths and treatments. This is the perfect excuse for a day’s break from skiing or if you have non-skiers in your party.

What you get is a more fun and relaxed approach and environment which is reflected most in what is undoubtedly the après capital of the Pyrenees Pas de la Casa. The resort is very much all about fun both on and off the mountain, with its mountain neighbour Soldeu

Motoring

Jaguar has finally launched its long-awaited SUV contender, the F-Pace. By breaking a world record loop-the-loop the night before the Frankfurt Motor Show, the British manufacturer took the wraps off its most important car for decades in typical bigbudget JLR fashion. The stunt, rumoured to have cost £1.5m, saw driver Terry Grant pull off the huge loop in front of hundreds of VIP guests. But while that may have grabbed the attention of the social media generation, and the headlines from the Germans in their own backyard, it was the car’s details that we were really interested in. 2015 has been a year of change for Jaguar. The AWD F-Type has arrived, alongside the BMW 3 Series challenging XE, a new XF and now the firm’s first ever cross-over, the F-Pace. Porsche beater? Jaguar referenced the Porsche Macan no fewer than 10 times in its press presentation, so it’s clear who the brand is targeting. The F-Pace will cost £34,170 when it arrives, which prices it ‘at the heart of the medium SV market and makes it better value than a Macan,’ says Jaguar.

Design decisions:

Ian Callum said he ‘never dreamed we’d do a crossover SUV’ and that the only reason they did it was because customers wanted one. Callum said he was pleased with the short overhangs, the integration of the Jaguar grille and the bonnet bulge. ‘The F-Type has been the inspiration in so many ways,’ he added.

Interior advances:

The inside of the F-Pace is a whole new world for Jaguar. A 10-inch touchscreen with a new user interface looks and works brilliantly, while there’s a 100GB SSD hard drive for owners to store music and video, four USB ports and four 12V sockets.

Digital display:

A 12.3-inch digital display sits where the clocks should be. They are represented digitally but all can be

changed to display a full screen map for the sat nav. Twitter and Spotify are fully integrated while users can use apps to pre-heat and cool the car, locate it and even to link with an Apple Watch.

Material matters:

There is more aluminium in the car than any other in its sector –some 80 per cent - while a third of that is from recycled sources. 70 new robots have been installed at the Solihull plant to make the F-Pace, with £120m invested in the project.

All terrain:

Borrowing tech from its Land Rover siblings, the F-Pace features a clever four-wheel drive system that switches between ice, snow/very wet or sand/deep snow, seamlessly. This may be a crossover, but it’ll still be capable off road.

Kitted out: Blind spot detection, closing vehicle alert, lane assist, traffic signal recognition are all standard as is a forward facing camera that can spot pedestrians in places drivers can’t. Occupants can even connect up to eight devices to the car’s WiFi network on the go.

Watch this:

Sporty types can use a wrist-watch style, waterproof key for times they don’t want to take the original with them. Drivers lock the car by tapping the ‘Activity Key’ against the ‘J’ on the boot. It uses RFID technology and is waterproof to 20 metres.

Pulling power: A supercharged 380bhp 3.0-litre V6 petrol will see the Jag hit 60mph in 5.3 seconds while the 300bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel has a whopping 700Nm.

Starter’s orders:

Customers desperate to be the first to own an F-Pace will be offered a special First Edition. Priced at a whopping £65,275 just 2,000 will be offered worldwide with only 200 coming to the UK. They can have it in any colour they like as long as that’s blue.

BEST SMALL CARS If you don’t need to transport your worldly goods with you every time you get in your car you don’t necessarily need a big vehicle. If most of your journeys are made around town and don’t include major motorway mileage, then you may want to consider one of the latest city cars. These won’t cost you the earth to buy or to run, are great to drive and the latest crop are stylish and comfortable for everyday use. Here we’ve picked five of our favourites.

Ford Fiesta - Price: From £9,995 The Fiesta has been the best-selling car in the UK for more months than we can remember – and that’s not without good reason. The latest small Ford has plenty to offer with a well-laid out cabin, fantastic handling that makes even trips to the supermarket exciting and a superb choice of specification.

VW Polo - Price: From £11,100 The VW Polo has an enviable reputation for being a bit of a tough guy – and in the city you need a vehicle that can withstand a few bumps and scrapes. The Polo is solid both inside and out with functional layout and built-to-last materials. Although it’s at the higher end of our price scale, VW’s well-respected residual values and reliability make it a worthy investment.

Honda Jazz - Price: From £11,695 The Honda Jazz might not be everyone’s first choice in the small car sector – but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a look. The Japanese car firm’s reputation for reliability is up there with the best in the world. Couple that with some funky looks, spacious interior and competitive pricing and it may be worth taking a trip to your local Honda dealer to try one out.

Dacia Sandero - Price: From £5,995 Some of you have probably spent more on a holiday than it costs to buy this brand new car – but don’t let this bargain basement price tag put you off. The Dacia Sandero, loved by James May of Top Gear fame, is the real deal, combining back to basics interior and no thrills styling with a functional engine and practical lay out. The fact you’ll get change from £6,000 makes it even more tempting.

Vauxhall Corsa - Price: From £8,995 The Corsa is soon to be replaced by an all-new model which means there are bargains to be had on the current model. A firm favourite with new drivers and pensioners alike, the Corsa might play second fiddle to Ford’s Fiesta in the sales charts, but it’s still worth a look. It’s stylish, has an impressive array of engines to pick from and is packed with plenty of features too.

New Year’s Revolution

ORGANISE YOUR LIFE THE ELECTRONIC WAY AND STICK TO THOSE RESOLUTIONS

In the 1980s, it was the Filofax; in the 1990s, the Personal Digital Assistant or PDA. Today, though, we’re more likely to stay on top of our lives using a mobile device. Whether you’re trying to get more organised or just want to stay on top of your New Year’s resolutions, gadgets can help. If your resolution was to get fitter or take better care of your health, there are stacks of devices that can accurately monitor your vital signs and your exercise routines. Firms such as Fitbit offer an entire range of fitness trackers ranging from the clip-on, £49 Zip to fullyfeatured smart watches such as the £199 Surge. Whichever kind you go for, the devices can track your activity to let you know how active you’ve been, how far you’ve travelled and how many calories you’ve burned, and they can send that data to a phone so you can keep track of your progress. If you’re interested in particular sports, SatNav specialist Garmin makes a range of fitness trackers designed specifically for runners, golfers and other sportsmen and women. You don’t need to be active to benefit from smart gadgets, though. If your resolution was to lose weight, a set of smart scales - from around £29 for stand-alone scales to £150 for scales that communicate with phones or PCs over Wi-Fi, enabling you to store your progress in an app or even share it with others online - can show you not just how much weight you’ve lost but also how your body is composed. So, for example, if you’re replacing fat with muscle - which is heavier than fat - you’ll be able to see that you’ve made great progress even if the actual weight displayed by the scales hasn’t changed. Then again, you’ll know that by the way your clothes feel, so maybe you don’t need smart scales after all. We’ve mentioned phones a few times now, and that’s because pound for pound they’re the most useful resolution trackers and life organisers: the reason stand-alone electronic organisers are a rare sight these days is because smartphones do a better job for less money. A really good Android phone can be as little as £40, and for that you’re getting a smartphone with built-in calendars and reminders and the opportunity to use apps such as the superb MyFitnessPal, which can track your exercise and can use your phone’s camera to scan barcodes and work out nutritional information from them automatically. More expensive devices such as Apple’s iPhones include motion processors that can track your steps, flights climbed and distance travelled without requiring a dedicated fitness tracker, and Apple’s own Health app can record that data plus anything else you’d like to monitor. If you’d rather do most of that automatically, MyFitnessPal is available for Apple devices too. The other thing that smartphones do is enable you to join likeminded souls. Many fitness devices and apps - Fitbits, Nike Fuelbands, the MyFitnessPal app - also have online communities where you can compare progress, share your stories or just hang around chatting with people who are doing the same things as you. That’s useful, because while fitness devices and apps are great, there’s one thing that only human encouragement can provide, and that’s the motivation to stick to your plan even when you don’t feel like it - and someone to laugh with when you need a bit of a boost.

CARE TIPS

Iain Betson goes tyre kicking Having just forked out £450 for three tyres on the car - no it’s not a Reliant Robin; fate being what it is I fully expect the fourth one to go pop in the near future right now I am in a zone of “tyre care awareness”. Sad I know, but if it saves me having to replace tyres on a regular basis then so be it. So here are some nuggets of tyre wisdom I’ve learnt and pass to you: 1. Use the correct pressures, and change them depending upon your load (increase for heavy use, reduce for everyday journeys). Doing this will improve stability, save fuel and prolong the tyre’s life. 2. Tread wear: check the tread wear indicators – raised areas at the base of the grooves of the tread. If the tread is level with the indicator you have only 1.6mm of tread left. Under that and it’s a fine and three points per illegal tyre. 3. Putting nitrogen instead of air in the tyre increases its life and saves fuel as it lessens the rolling resistance by dispersing heat more effectively. 4. Avoid those kerbs: hitting them will damage the tyre side wall, with a cut or bulge raising the risk of a blowout. 5. Potholes: do your best to avoid them safely. Hitting these will damage the tyre and, quite possibly, the wheel too, especially if you have “run-flat” tyres as they have very little give in the sidewall, meaning the wheel takes more punishment. A replacement wheel is a lot more expensive than a tyre. 6. If your car has traction control, changing just one tyre can make the system behave oddly as it receives conflicting information from the different tread depths, and thus grip, on the tyres. In some cases it will even inhibit the car’s performance as it attempts to keep the car safe from what it perceives is a dangerous condition.

Getting the Best If your house is on the market it’s only natural to be excited and keen to hear from your estate agent regularly about how things are going. But agents are busy people - always on the phone or out viewing properties with potential buyers - so how often should you be talking to them? We spoke to Michael Nettleton, director at Nock Deighton estate agents, to ask him for some tips. He said: “People selling their property with us vary greatly in how often they get in touch with us, some are on the phone every other day when others are happy to let us to get on with it. “However, the key to getting the best out of your agent is not how often you speak to them but the quality of the relationship and what you ask them when you do. “I would recommend you give the market time to react to the launch of your property, say four to six weeks, but if nothing much is happening after the initial period - here are some great questions you should be asking them. “How many people have been matched my details? How many recipients were on a mailing list for that price range?

OUT OF YOUR ESTATE AGENT

“Can we change the photographs and analyse the results? Sometimes a fresh set of pictures, taken at a different time of the year, can make all the difference - but it’s important to ask your agent to keep a track of how activity changes. “What did the people who viewed my property go on to buy? This is really interesting - if people are buying a completely different style of house, your marketing is appealing to the wrong people, but if they bought something very similar, you need to work on those finer details to get the sale. “What is happening with properties similar to mine? If comparable properties are getting offers or more viewings than yours - ask what they are doing differently. If you can’t beat them, join them! “What’s your analysis of our online performance? Your agent should be sending you a performance report showing how many people are viewing your house on whichever internet portal it is on (usually Rightmove, OnTheMarket or Zoopla). If they haven’t - ask them why!

Michael Nettleton

“Is the asking price putting people off, or is it something else? The truth is, it’s very difficult to put your finger on why a house isn’t selling, but it is often a combination of subtle things. Having an honest and frank conversation with your agent can go a long way to pushing things forward and getting that magic offer.”

Is Buy To-Let

STILL A GOOD INVESTMENT

credit crunch era, but even when you’ve got a mortgage offer that you’re happy with, you should be constantly looking for ways to improve returns by switching suppliers and cutting costs. It’s likely that your mortgage provider will need 125% of the monthly rental by way of repayment. The extra amount is intended to cover some of the costs of renting out, and provides a degree of reassurance to the lender that their money is safe. Their worry (and yours) is that the property could stand empty for some time, but unfortunately this is one of the inherent risks of being a buy-to-let landlord.

Will you manage the property yourself? Many professional landlords concentrate purely on managing their business. They don’t get involved in the month-to-month management of the property, or dealing with tenant issues – in fact, many landlords never even meet their tenants.

With no sign of improved interest rates for savers, and pension changes that offer more freedom, is buy-to-let still a good option for those wanting to invest? At first glance, the increase in stamp duty and reduction in some tax reliefs for landlords may cast doubt on whether investing in bricksand-mortar is a good idea, but success depends on many factors, not least of which is your commitment to maximising returns.

It’s purely a numbers game, and taking this approach means abandoning any personal preferences with regard to choosing your property. If you decide to hire a letting agent, they will take a percentage of the rent by way of payment. This may seem like a needless expense when you’re willing to do the work yourself, but when you consider how much time and energy is saved in not having to deal with tenant issues it may be money well spent, particularly if you have more than one property.

The inherent risks of buy-to-let Any form of investment is a risk, but with buy-to-let one of the inherent problems is not finding a tenant, or having to deal with troublesome occupants who damage your property.

We take a look at what you need to consider when thinking about property investment. One of the first items on the list should be to clarify your motivation for this type of investment, as it will directly impact on the areas and type of property that you choose.

Having it standing empty will impact severely on returns over the lifetime of your investment, and you may need to take a reduction in rent to contain some of these losses. It’s also easy for costs to spiral, particularly if the property is old and repairs are needed on a regular basis.

Do you want rental yield or long-term capital growth?

Other risks include increases in mortgage interest rates, and the property market in general taking a downward turn.

Are you considering a long-term investment to take advantage of capital growth, or focusing on the potential rental yield of a property? Between 15 and 20 years is a common timescale for property ownership with capital growth in mind, which might fit in nicely with your plans for retirement. On the other hand, investing in a multiple-occupancy student let, for example, could bring in much-needed monthly income. You may be able to make a rental yield of between 5% and 10% if you find a suitable property in a good location, and buy it for the right price. Whether you choose capital growth or rental yield will determine which type of property you buy, so it is worthwhile spending plenty of time considering your end-goal.

Focusing on the figures Buy-to-let can still be a good investment if you’re prepared to put in the time and effort to make it work. This begins with meticulous research to make sure you get the best mortgage deal, find suitable locations and the right style of property for your target market. In other words, you need to make sure as far as possible that the numbers add up. Lending restrictions have made it difficult to find a good mortgage deal in recent years, when compared with the pre-

46

Financial benefits of buy-to-let The beneficial tax reliefs enjoyed on buy-to-let mortgage interest payments are now being limited to the basic rate of income tax. This was previously an attractive part of buy-tolet investing, but they can still be enjoyed if you form a limited company for your property investments. As rates of corporation tax are being reduced to 18% by 2020, for owners of multiple properties at least, this could help to reduce costs. But as always, you need to seek the advice of a professional advisor to maximise the investment returns and minimise your tax bill. It is said that you make your profit when the property is bought rather than when it is sold, so researching the market, understanding the figures, and finding the best buy-to-let mortgage deal will be time well spent. Buying a rental property isn’t the easy option but the rewards are there if you’re prepared to put in the time and effort to make it pay. http://moneyfacts.co.uk/guides/buy-to-let/btl-have-youconsidered-the-investment-risks/

Major Recognition

FOR LIONCOURT HOMES

The phenomenal growth at Worcester based Lioncourt Homes has been recognised by the Sunday Times as one of the fastest growing businesses in the UK.

have an excellent culture which makes Lioncourt such an enjoyable and challenging place to work.’

The annual survey of all private companies in the UK has placed Lioncourt Homes in 25th position in the list of the fastest growing companies in the UK, and is 2nd in the Midlands Region.

Neil commented, ‘the whole business is based on our quality approach and everyone in the business is focused on quality of build, quality of design and quality of service to our customers. This quality approach has been recognised by HBF (House Builders Federation) and Lioncourt are holders of the coveted 5 Star Quality Award, one of only 15 developers in the whole of the UK to hold the award.

As the fastest growing house builder in the UK, Lioncourt has grown from a small regional player just a few years ago to one of the largest home builders and land owners in Central England. This impressive growth has seen rapid turnover and profit growth and has involved a near doubling of staff each year, over the past 2 years.

This rapid growth has been achieved whilst focusing on quality and Neil Chandler, Finance Director, also emphasised this as a fundamental part of their success.

With all this recognition what is possibly left for the Company to strive for? Well the response from Colin on this was clear and concise.

Founder executive directors Colin Cole and Neil Chandler, have been behind this growth but they are keen to emphasise that it is the culture, work ethic and expertise of everyone in the Lioncourt team that has made this outstanding growth possible.

He said ‘we are only at the start of the Lioncourt story. We have significant growth planned for the period ahead and we have excellent managers and staff developing throughout the business as part of our succession plans. But for now it is time to reflect and celebrate this latest success.’

Colin Cole, Chief Executive of the Group, said, ‘there is no doubt that the growth of Lioncourt Homes is attributable to the tremendous commitment of the Lioncourt staff who work tirelessly to achieve our growth plans. As a consequence we

Restaurant Review

FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE

THE ORCHARD

High Street, Newport TF10 7BH

T: 01952 872700

The Orchard is a brand new restaurant located in the heart of historic Newport. The charming old school house building has been sympathetically renovated with smart signage, topiary and lights adorning the frontage. Inside the dĂŠcor is classy and tasteful; candlelit tables are well spaced with fine linen tablecloths and napkins giving an upmarket feel. Inside the entrance is a small seating area and a hatch through to the kitchen, allowing a brief glimpse behind the scenes and a warm welcome from the chef himself as you arrive. Head Chef Peter Roberts and his wife Sarah opened The Orchard six months ago, Peter has over 25 years experience in the industry and together the husband and wife team also run a successful catering business. Their aim with The Orchard is to offer a fresh and vibrant fine dining experience with friendly service and relaxed atmosphere. On arrival were greeted by owner Sarah Roberts and shown to a lovely bay window table where we were given chance to peruse the menus. The wine list is ample with plenty of choice to suit all tastes and budgets; we both ordered a glass of the house Merlot and iced water for the table. After our drinks were served we were presented with complimentary appetisers, which comprised a delicate cherry tomato stuffed with mozzarella and basil finished with a drizzle of balsamic dressing, this was a lovely unexpected touch and set the tone for an enjoyable meal ahead. For starters I opted for asparagus wrapped in Parma ham and my friend Sara chose the king prawns with chilli ice cream. While we waited for our starters we were served fresh rustic bread with butter and tapenade.

50

The starters arrived artistically presented on long slim plates, the portion sizes were just right for starters. My asparagus was perfectly tender and the Parma ham wrapped around the stems added a moreish savoury taste, it was topped with a softly poached egg and a drizzle of balsamic dressing, the flavours worked together beautifully and I enjoyed every bite. Sara commented that her prawns were juicy and well cooked with a hint of lime, the chilli ice-cream worked exceptionally well with the prawns, the slight sweetness and coolness of the ice cream coming through first then a moment later the warmth of the chilli hit the palate, this dish really is a taste sensation.

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT After our plates were cleared we were presented with fresh lemon sorbets to cleanse the palate, this was another nice touch and it’s this sort of attention to detail that makes dining at The Orchard truly special. For main course Sara chose the roast duck with cherry sauce and I couldn’t resist the slow roasted lamb with apricot and honey. Once again the presentation of the mains was top notch and the portion sizes were ideal. Sara’s duck breast was cooked to perfection, with crispy skin yet moist and tender meat, it was served with a decadent cherry sauce with whole poached cherries, a selection of fresh steamed greens and battered broccoli. My lamb was also delicious, served on a bed of sweet pumpkin mash, with battered broccoli, steamed asparagus, sugar snap peas and green beans, it was well-cooked and very flavoursome, the pumpkin mash complimented the sweetness of the lamb perfectly. The dessert menu is basically a compilation of deliciousness. The Orchards Junior chef Charlotte has a penchant for patisserie and desserts and was recently awarded 3rd place in The Taste of Staffordshire awards. After a long deliberation I opted for the orange and apricot bread and butter pudding and Sara went for the Ferrero Roche cheesecake. The bread and butter pudding was wonderful, very light and fluffy and so moreish, it was served with a warm crème anglaise and was the perfect ending to a fabulous meal. Sara’s dessert was also beautifully presented and comprised a duo of chocolate cheesecakes, served with mascarpone cream and a tiny chocolate spoon. The cheesecake was rich and chocolaty, with a chunky crumbly biscuit base, topped with Ferrero Roche chocolates, what’s not to love! We both thoroughly enjoyed dining at The Orchard, the delicious food, relaxed ambience and attention to detail from start to finish made this a meal to remember. The Orchard is the ideal venue for a special meal with family and friends or a romantic dinner with that special someone, so if you appreciate fine food and wine then The Orchard is definitely a must visit destination.

get up close to some unusual objects from the Victorian sweet industry. In addition, from Monday 15th until Friday 19th there will be sessions making miniature roof tiles from air-drying clay. Each tile will be personally decorated using alphabet stamps and hand prints. A variety of other activities will also be on offer throughout the half-term holiday. Choose from making striped candles by dipping into brightly coloured liquid wax; building a wall with mini-bricks using different ‘brick bonds’ to discover which is the strongest and colouring-in pictures of Victorian scenes. All drop-in sessions take place from 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 3.30pm with activities varying day-to-day; candles and roof tiles also carry a small extra charge in addition to the museum entrance fee.

The Valentine’s industry boomed during Victorian times when more and more people sent love notes, poems and cards to their sweet heart as paper and printing became cheaper and 1840 saw the establishment of the Penny Post. Over the weekend of Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th February you can typeset and print a Valentine’s card for someone you love using Victorian techniques in the Town’s Goods Shed. Recipe - Cake & Bake

FRUIT & NUT GRANOLA BARS

If you’re worried about additives or extra sweeteners in shop-bought granola bars then why not try making your own? Packed with crunchy nuts and seeds and sweetened only with brown sugar and honey, these home-made oaty bars are perfect for a snack or as an after-school treat.

Makes 8 bars or 16 squares Ready in 50 minutes, plus cooling Ingredients: • 140g porridge oats • 50g unsalted blanched peanuts

• 25g pecans, roughly chopped • 25g pumpkin seeds • 20g sunflower seeds • 100g butter, plus extra for greasing

• 80g light soft brown sugar • 3 tbsp runny honey • 75g sweetened dried

cranberries or jumbo raisins

• 2 tbsp sesame seeds

1. Preheat the oven to 160°C/Fan 140°C/Gas 3. Grease an 18cm square shallow cake tin and line the base and sides with baking parchment. 2. Spread the oats, nuts and seeds on a large baking tray and place in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes until just lightly toasted, stirring once with a wooden spatula. 3. Place the butter, sugar and honey in a large saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted. Tip the warm oat mixture into the pan and mix thoroughly, then stir in the cranberries or raisins and nearly all the sesame seeds. 4. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and level with the back of a spoon, pressing down firmly. Scatter over the rest of the sesame seeds. 5. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until just pale golden around the edges. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then use the tip of a knife to mark into 8 bars. Leave in the tin until cold then lift out, using the lining paper to help you. Peel away the paper and cut through the marks to make 8 bars. TIP You can vary the nuts and fruit you add to these wholesome bars. Try different nuts, such as walnuts or hazelnuts and replace half the cranberries with goji berries or chopped dried apricots or dates.

NEW YEAR, NEW STYLE?

imagination. On a subtler note, a change of paint colour, or even a wood stain, combined with new knobs or pulls will give wooden furniture a new lease of life, while for really on-trend attitude you could have a table top covered in marble, slate or zinc. The latter is the metal du jour, and keen DIYers can order a sheet of zinc online, then get how-to instructions from YouTube.

Keep going around the house. Another way to add interest to dull walls would be with an eye-catching, stick-on-peel-off design, a metal-framed mirror or an oversized print. Boring floor? Time for a new rug – or there is always the option of either sanding back or painting old wooden boards. Looking for something simpler? Adding a sheepskin to an old sofa or chair will give instant uplift, as will a change of bed linen, towels or small accessories such as cushions, storage baskets or vases. And how about lights? A sassy lampshade can alter the look of an entire room, while popping in some filament bulbs will give your lighting a vibe that’s absolutely hot right now. How about a cool coat hook or new door knobs? Some kitchen canisters or a bathroom soap dispenser? The smallest things can make a surprisingly big difference. The high-street chains are brilliant at tapping into new trends and getting affordable products out there fast – so get browsing in your nearest department store.

Out with the old, in with the new, and if your New Year’s resolution is to refresh your home with a fashionable look, interiors expert Katherine Sorrell has some handy tips to help. Where do I start? Think about what parts of your home feel most tired and unloved. Perhaps walls could do with a wash of fresh paint, for example. Dulux’s colour of the year is Cherished Gold, a goldinfluenced ochre that can be used on its own as a statement or as a highlight in combination with other hues. The overall colour palette for this year is muted, warm and soft yet also sophisticated. ‘Think coral, not orange; ochre not yellow and midnight, not blue. This is a friendly palette but with a dark, mysterious side,’ says Rebecca Williamson, Dulux’s senior colour design and content manager. Another of Dulux’s over-riding themes for 2016 is ‘Heritage & Future’, in other words, the idea that one has to take inspiration from the past in order to design for the future. So, vintage and antique references support those of the modern-day in a palette that includes chocolate, sand, a deep, pinkish red, muted orange and spicy browns. Ideal for an overhaul in any style of property.

More easy updates You may not be in the market for buying new furniture, but there are still ways to update your old pieces for a fabulous new look. Ikea has identified a key trend this year for personalisation – just look at what can be done with an inexpensive chest of drawers, spray paint and some

56

What other trends should I be keeping an eye on? While a striking monochrome palette of black, white and grey is going to be big in 2016, opulent metallic accents are also catching on fast, and work well with both modern and traditional decors. The look can be either industrial (more on this next month) or retro-glam – as per Bemz’s ‘Deco Glam’ look, described as ‘cosy glamour with a Seventies twist’. ‘Many people who think back to the Seventies think of corduroy, brown, orange and wood panelling. Instead, we want to create a more glamorous Seventies style in our homes: think Charlie’s Angels, Studio 54, and Bianca Jagger,’ says Lesley Pennington, CEO and founder of Bemz. She recommends mixing plain fabrics in rose, steel, mineral blue and straw with geometric accents, plus dark wood, shiny brass, fluffy cushions, small tables and statement floor lamps. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the Scandi look that is all natural, textural, tonal and pared-back, including sheepskin, leather, wood and felt. If you prefer something with more colour, go for a folk-inspired style with brighter tones of red, orange and teal, combined with intricate florals, handicraft and woodlandinspired images. Last but not least, Graham & Brown have predicted four trends based around the catwalks at London Fashion Week: meadow prints, statement reds, intricate lace detailing and – you heard it here first – a throwback to the Eighties. You have been warned… Images - Top left: Ikea predicts a trend for personalisation, whether it’s using stains, stencils or freehand painting. Left: One of Dulux’s key trends for 2016 is ‘Heritage & Future’, including reds that reflect our rich heritage, but also have a bright contemporary feel that points to the future.

HAS THE GREAT POTTERY THROWDOWN FIRED YOU UP?

The BBC’s Great Pottery Throwdown finished in December after its first series of six programmes. Made by the team that produced The Great British Bake Off, it aimed to find Britain’s hottest pottery stars and, like Bake Off, it has helped the British public to understand more about the creation of artisan products, whether that’s a sourdough loaf or a set of stackable breakfast bowls. Learning about the intricacies of pottery making has been a revelation to viewers who had previously not given much thought to the process, and since the series ended many have been eager to try it for themselves. So if you’re thinking of joining a pottery class, what are the basic things that you should know before you start?

It’s messy! Think of two toddlers playing in a muddy field and multiply that image by ten to understand how you’ll look after your first go on the potter’s wheel. The essential ingredients when making pottery are clay and water – combine that with a wheel that spins your wet clay object around, and you get the picture. Be prepared to wear old clothes and shoes, cut your nails, tie back your hair and bring an apron that covers from the chest down!

It’s not all about the wheel There are two very different ways of making objects out of clay. Hand building, as the term suggests, doesn’t require a potter’s wheel: you will either make long, thin rolls of clay and build them up into a single shape (known as a pinch pot) or roll the clay out into slabs and join the pieces together with liquid clay to create a square or rectangular shape (slab pot). The expression ‘throwing’ comes from the way the clay is thrown onto the centre of a flat, spinning tray (the potter’s wheel) and squeezed into shape as it revolves at speed. You’ll need quite a lot of strength in your hands to do this, as well as patience. Inevitably the first few times you try, the clay will either slide off the wheel or you’ll make a perfect, cylindrical shape only to see it twist and warp at the very last minute.

It’s slow If you’re one of those people who likes to see instant results, pottery making may not be right for you, as the production of finished objects takes time. When a piece is first made the clay is loaded with water and must be thoroughly and evenly dried out before it can be fired. That’s a minimum of a week for freshly made (or ‘green’) objects.

It’s a science as well as a craft Making the initial clay shape is just part of a process that ends with a hard material that in some cases is almost as durable as stone. A pottery oven (kiln) is not the same as a domestic oven and an apprentice potter will need to learn how clay and glazes

58

react when heated to high temperatures. The process of heating clay and glazes to reach their optimal point of melting is usually achieved over two steps. Bisque firing is the first stage, where unglazed pots are heated just enough for them to be able to take the glaze that will give them their final, glossy finish. Once glazes have been applied the pots go back into the kiln for the glaze firing. At this stage pots must be kept completely apart or the glazes will melt on to each other and bond the pots together.

It needs space and investment You may be happy to continue working with others as you learn your craft at a local pottery class, but eventually you might decide to go it alone. If so, you will need to find additional space for your hobby. A large shed or a garage with electrics connected would be ideal, provided there is adequate room for the wheel and the kiln, a surface to paint and glaze your pots and places for them to dry before firing. However the equipment you’ll need can be costly: expect to spend between £600 and £2,000 on a potter’s wheel and £1,000-£4,000 on a kiln, and that’s without all the accessories and materials you’ll need to make the pots themselves. Taking up pottery making can be hugely satisfying and rewarding but it’s not a hobby you can simply pick up and put down again. It may take several weeks for you to make your first pottery objects and it could take considerably longer before you are proficient enough to create objects you might offer for sale. If you are still keen to have a go, the Hotcourses website (www.hotcourses.com) has a list of over 1,000 courses available in the UK. Once again, the BBC has opened our eyes to a craft that has been largely overlooked in recent years. The Great Pottery Throwdown may not eventually prove as successful as The Great British Bake-Off, but at least it has helped us to understand the skill, passion and commitment required to make a simple pottery object that can be used and enjoyed for years.

Make Room

FOR ROSES

It’s the perfect time of year to plant roses, and there should be a good selection in local garden centres or from specialist rose nurseries. Although roses look good in beds, borders and containers, why not create your own fantasy rose arch or rose-clad arbour?

soil. Although roses quite like fairly heavy soil, for clay soils likely to waterlogging prepare a sizeable area before planting by digging in well rotted manure, garden compost and grit, which also ensures good fertility.

Transform an existing arch or pergola by planting roses now to ensure fabulous colour for many summers to come. Alternatively, create your own using sturdy timber or buy a good quality wooden or metal arch or pergola kit.

Ensure you plant at the correct depth: the swollen graft point slightly above where the roots start protruding should be just above soil level. Once in place, keep your rose well watered during dry conditions, paying particular care over the next 18 months. Apply rose fertiliser and top up the mulch in spring.

Start by deciding whether to use ramblers or climbers to cover your pergola or arch. Ramblers are easier to train but only flower once a year, whereas many climbers have two flowering periods or flower intermittently for months. Many roses are strongly coloured, so ensure that these will look good with adjacent planting and will not clash with nearby painted or treated surfaces such as decking or garden furniture. Perfume is a vital ingredient - walking beneath an arch or pergola laden with perfumed roses on a warm summer’s evening takes some beating! If you get your roses delivered, don’t be put off if they have somewhat lopsided roots, uninspiring woody stems and little else. This is normal, but despite their forlorn appearance they usually establish well. Do try to plant as soon as possible, but if not make sure that you keep the root systems moist by wrapping in thoroughly moistened hessian or by burying the roots temporarily in garden soil. Make your planting hole close to the base of the arch or pergola: a distance of about 30 – 45 cm (12 – 18 in) works well, but keep away from concrete footings or other material located in the

60

If the roots of bare root roses are lopsided and crammed together, spread them out before planting. Soak the roots in water for a couple of hours before prising them apart, prune out any which have been damaged and plant the rose immediately.

Newly purchased roses are unlikely to have much in the way of top growth, but once they get going you will obviously need to train these stems into the arch or pergola, securing them at regular intervals with great care, so that they are not damaged by being buffeted against the arch or pergola during windy weather. I like to use the steel wire with a dense foam covering – strong but soft! Good varieties for planting over pergolas and arches include Veilchenblau ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ (climber), Excelsa ‘Crimson Shower’, Albertine Albericbarbier ‘Golden Showers’, ‘Iceberg’ (climber), Malvern Hills ‘Super Fairy’, ‘Gloire de Dijon’, ‘Zéphirine Drouhin’. Make vegetable growing fun with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ system. A Fresh Financial Start in 2016

BEGIN THE NEW YEAR WITH A BUDGET

are easily forgotten. Annual membership subscriptions are also often left out, as is one of the biggest expenses of the year - the summer holiday. Even the cost of a daily coffee adds up over time. So have a good think and include expenses large and small: weekly, monthly and annually. When thinking about the money that comes in, don’t forget to include wages, benefit and pension payments, and any income from savings, investments or self-employment. Once you’ve totalled the figures, deduct your expenses and hopefully you’ll be left with a positive number. If you spend more than you earn, now at least you can do something about it.

Not a static document

If you’ve overspent this Christmas, you might be wondering how to get your finances back under control. It’s easy to get carried away by the spirit of giving – the problem is, it can jeopardise your financial wellbeing into the New Year and beyond. So what can you do to get yourself back onto a firm financial footing? One of the first things is to analyse your finances and make a realistic budget. By taking a long-term view and identifying exactly how much you spend during the course of a year, you can take back control of your dwindling finances, and prevent spiralling into long-term debt.

Why budget? A budget helps to establish whether you’re living beyond your means. This isn’t always obvious on a day-to-day basis but if you’re constantly spending more than you earn, at some point you might find yourself unable to keep a roof over your head. But there’s a secret to making a budget that’s fit for purpose, and that’s to incorporate every expense that you make during the course of the year, including Christmas, birthdays, summer holidays and more. It will provide an accurate view of your financial position, rather than just a snapshot of a couple of months’ spending habits. This makes it more realistic and, with a bit of willpower, more likely that you’ll stick to it.

Birthdays and Christmas Friends’ and family birthdays may only cost a few pounds here and there, but over the course of a year, and in addition to Christmas expenses, they constitute a significant chunk of annual expenditure. Some households spend hundreds of pounds on Christmas presents, food and family treats, but these are often omitted from a budget because they aren’t regular monthly outgoings. Scrutinising your bank statements for just a couple of months doesn’t provide the bigger picture. It’s going to take some time to calculate your total spend for the year, but once it’s done you’ll be able to use it confidently to improve your longterm financial situation, and set yourself up for a lifetime of control. So what else do you need to include in your budget, apart from birthdays and Christmas?

Non-regular expenses, plus how much is coming in Motoring costs such as car insurance, tax, new tyres and the annual service

64

Your budget isn’t meant to be a static document. It needs to reflect your income and spending in the longterm, and this is likely to change often. So make it part of your routine to update it regularly, and make sure new expenses and sources of income are carefully recorded. Having a clear idea of where your money goes will also help to meet specific financial goals such as saving for retirement, putting money away for a deposit, or simply avoiding debt. Achieving financial clarity in this way helps you to live the life you want, so don’t view it as a restriction on spending – it’s more like the road to freedom.

A budget planner online? Is it easier to stick to a budget and update it regularly when it’s online? Well, it can be quicker if you’re already using the computer, and the calculations are made for you, but there’s also a lot to be said for using a physical budget planner. It’s more visible and accessible to keep a check on your spending, and this alone could provide the motivation to stick to it. You can put it on the fridge, or on the wall in front of you while you’re working. Building a secure financial future is the aim of the exercise, so choose the method that suits you best.

So you’ve got all your figures – what now? There’s a great way to divide up your money called ‘piggybanking.’ It’s described in detail on the Money Saving Expert website, and essentially means opening a separate bank account for each of your main categories of spending. You would need your main bank account, plus another one for bills. Thinking about your major expenditures, you might have three more accounts for: 1) a summer holiday

2) a new car

3) Christmas

This allows you to allocate an amount of money to each one via standing order from the main account. The word ‘budget’ often implies having to go without, but knowing your spending patterns and gaining financial control can give you back your freedom – the freedom to enjoy life without the worry of debt. www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/Budget-planning

Who’s in control of your computer? Post-Upgrade Fix-Ups for Windows 10 In previous articles this year I have covered what you can expect from Windows 10 and general advice on whether and how you should take advantage of Microsoft’s free upgrade offer. Here, I discuss some issues you should take care of should you have made the move to Windows 10. The first thing to note is that you do have the option to revert to your previous (Windows 7 or 8.1) installation for up to 30 days after your Windows 10 upgrade. You do this via the Recovery part of the Update & Security section in Widown10’s Settings app. The process is usually straightforward and it preserves your data while doing so. You did backup all your data as a precaution before upgrading, didn’t you?! Even if you did, do it again before you revert back. While Windows 10 generally runs very well, the following actions will help to eliminate issues that you do encounter. Not all of these fixes will necessarily be , but are commonly, needed, and some are technically challenging enough that you might need expert assistance.

 Apply all Windows Updates (via the settings

app) and app updates (via the Store app). In particular, make sure you install the Version 1511 (November 2015) update for Windows 10.

 If you are using MS Office Outlook for your email, run the system file checker (look up “sfc /scannow” via your favourite search engine).

 Update to the latest software for your printer. Some printers perform badly after the upgrade if you don’t.

 Verify all your important applications and

apps are working as they should. Most Windows 7/8.1 software works well in Windows 10, but some might need updating.

 The new ‘Edge’ browser in Windows shows promise, but is really a work-in-progress. For now, consider making Internet Explorer or your favourite other browser the default. Edge probably won’t mature properly until at least the summer of 2016.

by Steve Moss  Go through

the - long Privacy section in the Settings app and review what you wish to change. Turning off the Feedback frequency, for instance, will eliminate some unwelcome ‘noise’.

 Learn how to customise the Start menu tiles

and the taskbar. Making these your own can greatly improve your productivity.

If you find insurmountable issues after upgrading, you should seek technical help or even back up your data - again - and then revert back to your previous copy of Windows.

If you have a question you’d like Steve to answer here, either e-mail him at clinic@freeyournet.com or call 07971 321586. Celebrating a Life

HOW THE UK HAS EMBRACED INDEPENDENT FUNERALS

Nowadays if you happen to see a group of people emerging from a church or crematorium after a funeral service, the chances are that instead of hearing faint strains of Verdi’s Requiem emanating from inside, you’ll hear a chorus of Monty Python’s “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” (recently voted the most popular song played at UK funerals) booming out through the open doors. You probably won’t find mourners dressed in black, either. If they’re not all wearing outfits in the deceased’s favourite shade of blue, purple or yellow, they may be dressed in clothes that seem more suitable for a party than a funeral.

But this doesn’t mean we’ve become less respectful towards the dead: far from it. It simply follows the current trend in funerals, where the end of life is now seen as an occasion for reflection and celebration. In recent years the special qualities of the person who has passed away – their interests, successes, challenges and good deeds – have become the main focus of the funeral service. Nowadays speakers at funerals are even likely to throw in the odd joke as they talk about the person who has died: something that would have been unimaginable fifty years ago. It’s a fitting tribute to a life well lived, and provides an alternative approach to a traditional religious ceremony. Another change you might notice is that a casket made of cardboard, bamboo or willow has replaced the standard wooden coffin, and this is thanks to the growing interest in more eco-friendly funerals. A ‘green’ funeral may encompass anything from simply placing the body in a non-toxic, biodegradable casket, to observing stricter environmental practices such as using biodegradable shrouds, banning embalming with formaldehyde products and placing a tree or natural stone to mark the grave rather than an engraved headstone. Many people choose to bury their loved ones in a specially designated field or woodland area in preference to a churchyard or other traditional burial ground. The idea behind natural burial is to be at one with nature, but families should be aware that marking and tending the grave is often discouraged at natural burial sites, so make sure you have read and understood the site’s policy before arranging the burial. The Natural Death Centre - www.naturaldeath.org.uk - has a list of grounds all around the UK and there are new sites opening every year. The Natural Death Centre is also happy to advise on ‘DIY’ funerals. There is no legal requirement to use the services of a funeral director, but while you may have good reasons for wanting to go it alone, many families find it very daunting to arrange the practicalities of a funeral without any support from an undertaker.

68

Even Angus Townley, who has published a blog on his experiences of arranging an independent funeral for his mother (see www.owletthall.com/an-independent-funeral/) admits: “A funeral director gives peace of mind as they have the experience of getting through all the necessary bureaucratic hoops. Clearly one only has a single chance to get it right.” A middle way might be to look for a funeral director who will provide you with as much or as little help as you need. Funeral Advisor (www.funeraladvisor.org.uk) is a not-for-profit social enterprise, completely independent of the funeral industry, which aims to help people find a funeral director that is right for them. You can use the search facility on their website to locate local services and even read user reviews. If the deceased was not particularly religious, then a humanist celebrant may be the right person to lead the burial or cremation ceremony. The British Humanist Association (www. humanism.org.uk) provides information on how to get in touch with a celebrant and what it will cost you to use their services. Many humanist celebrants specialise in funerals and are therefore familiar with cremation and burial procedures. The celebrant will meet with the family members or friends most closely connected with the person who has died in order to learn more about their life and personality and write an appropriate tribute (you’ll be able to approve their draft prior to the funeral). They can also offer ideas for creating an order of service and advise on music and poetry readings, as well as giving guidance on practical matters such as the sound and lighting equipment at the crematorium and the amount of time available for the committal. Planning a funeral is never easy, but in recent years the breakdown of many of the taboos that previously surrounded mourning and funerals has helped friends and families express their feelings in a much more personal way. But perhaps the greatest advantage of this new freedom is that it gives space for people suffering the anguish of loss to grieve in a way that brings them the greatest comfort and solace.

CHILDREN & ACTIVITIES

PETS:

THE IMPORTANCE OF BRSHING YOUR DOG’S TEETH

Regularly brushing your dog’s teeth from an early age can prevent serious medical issues such as heart, liver and kidney disease. Don’t expect them to thank you for it though. Most dogs dislike having their teeth brushed, but starting a routine while they are still young will help you both adjust. You’ll need to buy toothpaste specifically for dogs, as the fluoride in human toothpaste is poisonous to them.

Gain their confidence slowly It is a good idea to let them get used to the taste of toothpaste before brushing. They should lick it off your finger to start with, and then off the brush you are going to use. Once accustomed to the taste of their toothpaste and the sight of the brush, it won’t be such a shock when you first brush their teeth properly.

What type of brush? There are various types of toothbrush on the market for your pet – some people prefer to use a ‘finger brush’ when their dog is young, as this type of brush is soft and small, giving you more control when brushing. As your dog grows, however, a larger brush may be more suitable, and these are available in various shapes and sizes. Initially, it is a good idea to only brush your dog’s front teeth – let them get used to that and then gradually try to brush more. Reassuring the dog will help, as will treating them to a game or a walk afterwards. http://uk.pedigree.com/health-and-training/keeping-your-doghealthy/how-to-brush-your-dogs-teeth http://www.cesarsway.com/dog-care/dog-health/7-tips-for-doggiedental-care

Plan Your Perfect

FAMILY BATHROOM

include as much storage as you can, so all those plastic toys can be popped away quickly when you need a calm, grown-up space. Vanity units can be built under basins, also concealing pipework, and WCs can be placed against false walls which contain both the cistern and some storage space; you can also use wall and floor cupboards, either custom-made or off-thepeg, plus well thought-out conventional storage ideas such as a hinged chest with a padded seat on top and all sorts of shelves, racks, boxes and baskets. Finally, draw all your fittings to the same scale as your floor plan, and cut them out. You can move them around until you find the layout that works best, remembering to allow generous activity space for knees, elbows, drying and so on, around each fitting.

FITTINGS In a bathroom that’s used regularly by all members of the family, young and old, flexibility is key. Opt for a timeless white suite with an easy-clean finish, plus neutral tiles, and you can add bold colours and fun patterns in the form of towels, mats, handles and hooks. Wall-hung fittings are easier to clean around, as well as making the space seem bigger; for small children, a sturdy, portable step will help them reach the loo and basin. For safety around hot water, ensure your taps and shower have an anti-scald device and touch-safe surfaces, and set thermostatic mixers to low temperatures.

FLOORING

Is your bathroom family-friendly? Think layout, fittings, flooring, lighting and all-important storage space – and turn your bathroom into an appealing haven for both children and adults, says Katherine Sorrell. THE SPACE The first question: is your room big enough? If it’s too small for comfort, but there’s a tiny, adjacent WC (common in period properties), consider knocking down the wall in between to combine them into one family-friendly room. Many older properties also have a lot of bedrooms compared to the number of bathrooms, and it may make sense to convert one of the bedrooms into a second bathroom – thus avoiding queues every morning. The least expensive way to overhaul a family bathroom is to keep the fixtures and fittings in the same place: that way you’ll avoid the costs of altering pipe runs. On the other hand, if the layout just isn’t right – perhaps there’s only a bath and you want to create space to add a separate shower – you’ll have to bite the bullet and re-arrange the room. Measure up and draw a plan on graph paper, noting the position of doors and windows, any radiators that you’re going to keep, the soil pipe and any other permanent fixtures. Then decide what fittings you require: a bath, walk-in shower, WC, basin (or two – ideal for busy bathrooms), radiator and/or heated towel rail (make sure it’s big enough for LOTS of towels)… A specially designed shower-bath, wider at one end and with a curved-glass screen, can be a great space-saver, and try to

74

Bathroom floors must be non-slip and easy to clean; most importantly, however, they mustn’t mind getting wet. Carpet is a complete non-starter in a modern family bathroom, and solid wood is risky as it may shrink or warp. If you like the look of timber, however, you may be able to install marine-grade ply, engineered boards, laminate, bamboo or tropical hardwoods. Ceramic tiles are ideal, especially as they work brilliantly with underfloor heating (cosy toes!), while alternatives include linoleum, which has a classic look and is made from environmentally friendly materials, rubber – available in an array of gorgeous colours – and the ever-popular and practical vinyl that can cope with anything kids can throw at it. Literally.

LIGHTING Lighting really makes a difference to the mood of a bathroom and, if possible, it should be planned in the initial design stages. Include good general, overall lighting, perhaps in the form of inset ceiling spotlights or (less expensive) a ceilingmounted track, plus some task lights, by the mirror, for shaving or applying make-up. Clever ideas include: storage units that incorporate lighting; fitting uplighters in flooring; an led colourchanging lamp operated by remote control; adding a colourful light stream to your tap water and even illuminated tiles. You could even consider fitting low-level lighting that comes on automatically when someone enters the room – great for nighttime toilet visits. Remember that when any light fitting is near water, it must be manufactured with suitable protection against splashing – designated by an IP coding of 4 and above.

Computer Love

WHAT DO YOU GET THE GADGET FAN WHO HAS EVERYTHING?

It’s easy to get Valentine’s Day wrong: nothing says “I love you” less than uncomfortable pants in the wrong size, some wilting flowers or whatever chocolates were half price in Tesco. But if your soul mate is a gadget fan, it’s very easy to get Valentine’s Day right. One of the problems of buying presents for gadget fans is that they tend to have the big things already, so for example if they fancied an Apple Watch or a Samsung Galaxy S6 they’ve almost certainly bought it for themselves. But that’s an opportunity rather than a problem, because there are stacks of accessories and add-ons that can enhance what they’ve already got. Take the Apple Watch, for example. There’s a huge range of straps including tanned and coloured leather, metal and fun coloured silicone that can completely transform its looks. Apple’s own ones are fairly nice and predictably expensive, but you don’t need to pay quite so much: metal straps from the likes of Hoco (£48) and leather ones from Nomad (around £70) look and feel fantastic, and having multiple straps means the Watch fits with any outfit from ultra-casual to seriously formal. It’s a similar story with smartphone and tablet cases, where there are some fantastic designs to choose from. A woven Ted Baker case for the iPad Mini is £35, while Pipetto.co.uk’s clever Origami cases are around £30. You’ll find all kinds of household names making phone and tablet cases including Radley, Michael Kors and Aspinal of London, with prices ranging from around £12.50 for a simple Radley iPhone case to £250 for an Aspinal iPad case. Accessories aren’t just about fashion. If your beloved has a smartphone, tablet or laptop they might appreciate some Bluetooth accessories, such as Bluetooth wireless headphones - around £50 for a set of Jabra Move headphones, rising to around £200 for high-end sets from Bose - or wireless speakers, which are great for streaming music from the likes of Spotify or Apple Music at home, in the garden or on the beach when Summer finally returns. We’re big fans of the Bose Soundlink Mini (£169), but you needn’t spend that much to get great sound: Sony’s SRS-X2 is around £60, while JBL’s Flip 2 is about £50 and TDK’s tough Trek Flex is £55 - £69 depending on your choice of colours. If you’d rather give a more traditional gift, technology can still help: the Lastminute.com, Laterooms.com, Expedia.co.uk, Kayak and SkyScanner apps can all help you find the perfect romantic getaway at the right price, while the 5pm and OpenTable apps make it easy to book a restaurant for a romantic night out - although if you’d rather impress by cooking something spectacular at home, celebrity chef apps from the likes of Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson can give you not just recipes but videos on how to prepare the perfect Valentine dinner. Tech can even help if you don’t currently have someone to share Valentine’s day with: online matchmaking services such as Match.com have smartphone and tablet apps to help you find Miss or Mr Right, while famous apps such as Tinder (for everyone) and Grindr (for gay or bisexual men) use location awareness to help you find potential partners near you. If that sounds a little bit scary, apps such as Hitch enable friends to play matchmaker, limiting the pool of potential suitors to people your friends already know.

Book Review

NEW BEGINNINGS

In need of a change in 2016? Whether you want to alter your life’s direction, go travelling, or just be a bit healthier, sometimes you need a little inspiration before you take the plunge. This month’s selection of books features new adventures, new thinking and everyday acts of courage that might well offer just the motivation you need.

The Soup Cleanse – Angela Blatteis and Vivienne Vella If you’re feeling the effects of a Christmas of excess, a detox could help you get back on track. Soups are a great way to get the nutrition you need, while cutting out the ‘junk’. They’re also far more filling than juices, so won’t leave you feeling hungry, and they can be prepared ahead in batches, so work well if you don’t always have time to cook fresh food from scratch. With several detox programmes to choose from, and some truly delicious recipes, The Soup Cleanse could help you to kickstart a healthier 2016.

No Baggage – Clara Bensen A travel memoir with a difference, No Baggage sees Clara travelling through Europe with a man she’s only recently met, no luggage and no fixed plans for where to stay. She’s also only recently overcome the depression that stole two years of her life. Sleeping mainly on strangers’ sofas, the pair get to experience a different side of the countries they visit, and learn more about themselves, and each other, as they go.

One Million Lovely Letters – Jodi Ann Bickley A serious brain infection at 22 left Jodi Ann Bickley so depressed she was close to ending her own life. While re-learning to walk and do basic everyday tasks, Jodi decided to bring hope to other people’s lives by writing letters to strangers. She ended up writing thousands, and now has a team of volunteers, who handwrite letters to people who request them, all over the globe.

The Year Without a Purchase – Scott Dannemiller Tired of the relentless drive for more ‘stuff’, Scott and Gaby Dannemiller decided to take a step away from consumerism and commit to a year without buying anything other than food and other essentials. This book records their experience and what they learned along the way. The couple are Christian and their religious beliefs played a big part in their decision, as did the desire to spend more meaningful time together as a family. Far from being a self-righteous lecture, it’s laugh out loud funny, and manages to make you think about your own spending habits, without a hint of nagging.

Take Your Soul to Work – Erica Brown Whether you’re a team manager, or the CEO of a multi-national business, leadership can be exhausting. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the day-to-day minutiae of working life, and forget about the bigger picture. Take Your Soul to Work gives you a daily meditation to help you steer your business in a more compassionate way, and inspire your employees. Read it in order, or dip in and out when you need particular guidance on an area of leadership, from mentoring to discipline.

Coal River – Ellen Marie Wiseman Sometimes small acts of courage can change communities. This historical novel tells the story of the harsh reality of coal mining in the 1900s and Emma, a young woman who decides to take a stand and speak out against child labour. While fictional, much of what Emma witnesses is based on fact, and in many parts of the world her fight is just as relevant today as it was a hundred years ago. Gripping.

WORDWHEEL

Notes from your local Ironbridge Gorge Councillor Wishing you all a happy and prosperous New Year! The arrival of 2016 gives us all an opportunity to review our aspirations and commitments. None more so than Telford and Wrekin Council which is in the process of determining its spending priorities and investments.

Last November saw the closure of Ironbridge Power Station. It is vital that future proposals for the site benefit the local economy and community; what are your thoughts and ideas for the site, please let me know.

TARGET Excellent: 20 or more words Good: 16 words Fair:12 words

The visitor economy is one of this country’s strongest performing sectors and vital to the local area; therefore we must ensure an ambitious and collaborative strategy to increase tourism into Ironbridge and our Borough as a whole.

The Chancellor has allowed local councils to retain 100% of business rate income so it is essential that we invest in opportunities that will ensure a vibrant economy. Ironbridge is a major contributor to tourism in our Borough and the Government has pledged its support to the visitor economy with a new £40 million Discover England Fund.

Nicotine

WITHOUT THE NASTIES airflow and the liquid is heated via a small heating element in the cartridge. The vapour created is then inhaled by the user. E-cigarettes are not currently licensed for prescription, but after May 2016, under the EU Tobacco Products Directive (TDP) any e-cigs containing over 20mg/ml of nicotine will require authorisation by the Medicine and Healthcare Products Agency (MHRA) in the same way as nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

Nicotine Replacement Therapy Products

These provide nicotine in a variety of different ways and strengths, in order to reduce cravings and alleviate withdrawal symptoms.

Smoking is responsible for one in every five deaths in adults over 35 in England, and kills half of all long-term smokers prematurely. In light of these statistics and the research confirming the dangers of second-hand and third-hand smoke, it’s not surprising that many smokers are now seeking alternatives to tobacco. Nicotine is the addictive component of tobacco, and withdrawal makes addicts feel restless, anxious and depressed – hence the illusion that a cigarette ‘calms their nerves’. However, nicotine isn’t responsible for the majority of damage that cigarettes cause. Smokers want alternatives that deliver nicotine in a less harmful way and that don’t contain the arsenic, cyanide, tar and other toxic nasties found in cigarettes. Luckily, there are now more cigarette alternatives available than ever.

E-Cigarettes (and Mods, Vape Sticks, Personal Vaporisers)

E-cigarettes have proved to be somewhat controversial, mainly due to the rapid growth of the industry and its lack of regulation. Some establishments ban them because of the uncertainty surrounding what chemicals they contain and may release into the air. Safety concerns include: • Safety of the supposedly ‘safe’ added ingredients, such as flavourings – experts point out that although some of these ingredients are certified safe to eat, this doesn’t necessarily mean they’re safe to inhale into the lungs • The inclusion of dangerous chemicals such as aldehydes, and unspecified ingredients • Inconsistent, unspecified or unregulated quantities of nicotine • Throat irritation due to allergy to ingredients, such as nut flavourings or propylene glycol The NHS QuitForLife campaign advises: “E-cigarettes are significantly less harmful than tobacco cigarettes but are not harmless. Their long term health impact is unknown.” While some e-cigarettes are made to look similar to a normal cigarette, others don’t look cigarette-like in the slightest. However, they all contain a battery, an atomiser and either a cartridge or refillable ‘tank’ containing the nicotine liquid. This ‘e-liquid’ or’ e-juice’ is suspended in propylene glycol or glycerine and water. When a user sucks on the device, a sensor detects

Patches Patches are a very popular choice. They release a steady dose of nicotine into the bloodstream and are very discreet. Patches come in a variety of doses and release times, so that you can gradually reduce your nicotine dosage. Chewing Gum Nicotine gum gives a burst of nicotine rather than a constant dose, just as a cigarette does, and can be used whenever you get the urge to have a cigarette. A variety of brands and flavours including mint, fruit and liquorice are available, and there are two strengths: 2mg and 4mg. The gum should be chewed slowly until a tingling or nicotine taste is detected on the tongue and then left in the mouth until the tingling has subsided, when it can be chewed again. This is repeated for around 30 minutes. You shouldn’t exceed the maximum quantity stated on the product, and you should space out your gum chewing or you may experience side effects such as heartburn or nausea. Lozenges and Soluble Sublingual Tablets Nicotine lozenges and sublingual tablets dissolve slowly in the mouth, releasing their nicotine dose. The lozenges come in 1mg, 2mg and 4mg strengths and sublingual tablets come in a 2mg strength. Mouth Sprays 1mg mouth sprays are used to supply a burst of nicotine to reduce cravings. Inhalators 15mg inhalators release nicotine from a cartridge when you breathe in, and can be useful if you initially find the habit of holding and inhaling from a cigarette hard to break. One cartridge lasts for around 40 minutes of intense use. Nasal Sprays The 10mg nasal sprays may be best suited to heavy smokers, as they rapidly deliver a strong dose of nicotine. Research suggests nasal sprays may be the most effective type of NRT, but they’re not the most discreet option. If these products don’t contain toxins, then I can use them indefinitely, can’t I? They’re harmless. No. While all these alternatives provide a safer way to get your nicotine dose than smoking tobacco, they are intended to help you reduce and ultimately quit smoking. Nicotine is an addictive drug with a range of mental and physical side-effects. The NHS QuitforLife campaign warns: “Nicotine is classed as a poison in its pure form and, if ingested in high enough doses, can kill. It is toxic in contact with the skin in high concentration. It should be supplied in a clearly labelled, child resistant package and stored out of the reach of children and pets.”
