Gardening
OUTDOOR RELAXATION Think too of plants with a relaxing feel to them, such as the grass Chasmanthium latifolium. This grows to a height of about 45 cm and carries its flattened seed heads in vast numbers above the leaves. They move about delicately in the breeze and are almost impossible not to stroke. Grow some Artemisia abrotanum its soft, wonderfully grey-green leaves will make you want to touch it, and when you do so you will find it also releases a lovely aroma.
When you get back from a hard day’s work, or when you simply find the time to escape into the garden after a stressful day, then it is essential that you are met by a soothing environment. It is all very well creating a garden with lots of straight lines and wacky bits of metalwork, but if you want to really let your garden take the strain, then concentrate on a truly relaxing feel that will help you to unwind as you enjoy soft shades and textures of foliage, delicate flower colours and fabulous perfumes. Plants have an amazing ability to calm and soothe even the most wound up, stressed out mood, but what should you grow if you really want to create that perfect place to relax? Start by considering a fairly gentle perfume, like that produced by many roses. One of my favourites is ‘Felicia’. For something slightly richer try ‘Tuscany Superb’. If you have an arch, arbour, pergola or even a spare bit of fence then train a honeysuckle over it. The combination of its delicately coloured flowers and fabulous perfume will cheer you up and you can even enjoy it in the early evening as you sit back and relax with a cup or glass of your favourite tipple! A sowing of night-scented stock will produce plants that, although not flamboyant, have the most heavenly rich perfume – also perfect for early evening relaxation as this is when the flowers open and produce wafts of really sweet scent. If you have space for a good-sized container plant, then grow your own Datura or Brugmansia. Commonly known as the angel’s trumpet and although potentially very poisonous, these plants produce large elegant trumpet-shaped flowers with a wonderful perfume.
6
The perfume of lavender is often used in aromatherapy because of its calming, soothing properties, so what could be better to grow in a sunny spot with free-draining soil than some lavender? You can even use it to edge a border providing conditions are right, and it not only has lovely, slightly furry or felt-like foliage but also produces that heavenly smell. Take a look at some of the grasses and bamboos that are available; the rustling sound of bamboo foliage as the stems sway gently in a breeze, or as you brush your hand against them, is one of the most relaxing sounds I know, and for smaller spaces many of the grasses form wonderfully rounded and quite irresistible clumps of foliage. When it comes to choosing favourite flowers, don’t forget that although some bright colour is a good way to cheer you up, if you want to relax then concentrate on cream, white and, of course, the pastel shades. There are a host of these available for annuals, perennials, shrubs and climbers. Don’t forget that green is known to be a relaxing colour too, so ensure that you include plenty of plants with good foliage and, in shady areas, you may find that a miniature grotto-like patch planted up with ferns is just what you need. And finally, before you rush off to the garden centre to buy some of these truly magical ingredients, just a reminder that water in a garden always helps to relax you. Whether it’s a small pond or perhaps a bubble fountain, position it where you can hear that sound of moving water or enjoy watching the wildlife as it comes to feed and drink – and before you know it you will find that you want to move the whole of your life into your garden.

HELPS DIY SOS TRANSFORM THE HOME OF A LOCAL FAMILY
Wrockwardine Wood Junior School pupil Matthew Cooper is very poorly with and had not been able to live in his family home for over a year. The Big Build team from DIY SOS started work on 28th February along with the help of hundreds of local tradespeople to enable Matthew to return home and they completed the renovation in just nine days. At the age of 10, Matthew was diagnosed with brain and spinal cancer. After undergoing surgery to remove the tumors, he suffered a series of strokes which have left him paralysed, so he couldn't return home as it was not fit for purpose. Since his discharge at the end of last year, he has been living in rented accommodation with his parents until the house could be adapted to meet his new needs. After a long 18 months of hospital stays, this lovely family were helped by local traders, tradesmen and the BBC DIY SOS team to make a dream come true and finally have a home that meant their son could return in surroundings familiar to him. The whole house has been stripped and redeveloped. An extension has also been built on the side of the house with a wet room and two bedrooms - one for Matthew and the other for his carers. One of the many local businesses that came forward to offer their services was Roy at Central Paving who became involved after his grand-daughters Lalya and Courtney recommended his services to their Headmistress to help volunteers that came together in their community to help a young boy and his family have a home made specifically for him. Central Paving designed and laid the front driveway, using 65mm Blockleys paviours, 8x4 sleepers and silver granite kilsaran slabs for the path. Central Paving would like to
8
thank Barry from Home and Gardens and the endless volunteers that gave up their time to help make this project succeed. Many local companies also generously donated supplies to help Central Paving create the driveway including Construction Equip who supplied a mini digger, JPE who donated aggregates, Emerys donated building supplies, Blockleys/Michelmersh supplied the block pavers and TAFS who supplied sleepers and top soil. Finally, this was all made possible after the kind hearted Headmistress Julie Henry at Wrockwardine Wood Junior School realised this family needed help so she launched the fund raising and organised her pupils to apply to DIY SOS. Julie started raising money for the renovation shortly after Matthew was diagnosed with cancer and to date, the school has raised more than ÂŁ52,000. The show managed to convert the house without using the funds, which will now be spent on Matthew's treatment. Welcome home Matthew!!

Slug Survival
GARDENING
Slugs may be small, but as we all know, they have the potential to drive you crazy! Whether you have a massive garden, a tiny plot or even if your gardening is restricted to a few planters in a back yard or on a balcony, the chances are that slugs will cause you grief. There are about thirty species of slug in the UK and most feed throughout the year, especially after dark and when the soil is wet or moist… and that seems to mean most evenings in my garden! Now that spring is here and the weather has really warmed up, they’re out in force, using their tongue-like ‘radula’ (armed with approximately 27,000 tooth-like spikes) to rasp away at our precious plants. But before launching an attack, there is something you should bear in mind – most slugs actually do little damage to living plants, instead preferring to feast on dead and dying material including flopped foliage and organic mulches. On the whole, the larger slugs tend to do the least damage to plants as they eat almost exclusively decaying and dead material. It is their smaller cousins like the greyish-black keeled slug and the pinkish-beige-grey field slug which are more likely to wreak havoc in your vegetable plot or flower border - they may be small but they are far from innocent. With estimates of about 200 slugs per average cubic metre of average garden soil, the situation can soon get out of hand. Keeled slugs in particular love to feast below ground, as well as on plants above the soil surface. This means serious trouble, especially at this time of year when many of us are planting out young plants and seeds are starting to germinate. In no time at all slugs can eat through the base of a young stem, killing the plant in the process. As seeds germinate in the soil, these little horrors often eat the seedling even before it has had a chance to emerge above the soil surface! Later in the year, as potato tubers swell beneath the soil and carrots start to fatten they will begin to tunnel into these too. To make matters worse, they breed quickly and very efficiently – each slug has both male and female organs and in extreme situations can even fertilise itself. Take a look on the soil surface, beneath drooping foliage and in amongst moist organic matter, and you’re likely to spot the clumps of eggs. Each egg is about 1-2mm in diameter and a clear, milky or offwhite coloured sphere. So what can you do with these squidgy little menaces? • Go on an evening slug hunt. In particular, slugs are out in vast numbers after it has rained or you have done some watering, so you can collect up as many as you can. • Choosing resistant varieties of vegetable is worthwhile too. Check seed catalogues and websites for varieties which are marked up as having useful resistance to slugs. With potatoes, main crop varieties usually suffer most, so try to grow mainly earlies. Some varieties are slug disaster zones e.g. Cara, Maris Peer, Kondor and Pentland Crown, but if you choose Charlotte, Kestrel, Sante or Wilja you are in with a much better chance.
10
• Try to encourage natural slug predators such as hedgehogs, frogs, toads, slow worms and ground beetles. If you keep hens consider letting them clear the ground for you – but obviously only before you start planting and sowing! • Use the Nemaslug nematode control – just dilute as described on the pack and water on to moist soil which is at 5˚C or above. It is a treatment I really like because it is harmless to everything except slugs, so pets, wildlife or humans will be safe from any adverse effects. It works swiftly and silently too - you’ll soon see fewer holes appearing in foliage and, if you’re a potato grower and you drench the soil around the potato plants about six weeks before anticipated harvest, the nematodes soon get to work and your potatoes should be virtually slug-damage free. It is also a brilliant way to clear a slug-infested raised bed or planter; once applied, place selfadhesive copper tape around the rim of the container to keep the contents slug free. The copper tape is really long-lasting, working for years in my experience. You can find out more about Nemaslug and copper tape on my website at www. pippagreenwood.com/products/protect-your-crops. • Barriers such as crushed shells, wool pellets, soot, pine needles or copper-impregnated fabric can also work well, but some of these may need replacing regularly and results seem to vary from garden to garden and gardener to gardener. • Traps filled with beer can also be a fantastic way to reduce slug numbers in your garden dramatically and, apart from the somewhat messy (and grim) business of emptying them out, they are simple too. You can buy ready-made traps or make your own using inexpensive plastic beakers plunged into the soil, the rim protruding 1-2cm above the soil surface and filled with a well-flavoured beer. I did a mini ‘trial’ on Gardeners’ Question Time once and found that Guinness worked best - and interestingly alcohol free lager proved least effective! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com to buy gorgeous UK grown vegetable plants accompanied by weekly advice emails from Pippa, or to peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Face-Agram or Instabook?
THE MATURE USER’S GUIDE TO SOCIAL MEDIA
Nowadays grandparents are proving a match for their grandchildren when it comes to posting comments and uploading photos to social networking sites such as Facebook.
Social media’s fastest growing demographic is older users. When the seniors’ website silversurfers. com recently surveyed over three thousand of its members, it found that 81% of the sample checked their Facebook accounts more than once a day. But what if you haven’t yet ventured into social networking? How do you know where to start? These days, when everyone’s talking about ‘tweeting’, and ‘DMs’, or information appearing in ‘timelines’ or on ‘walls’, it’s hard to admit that you haven’t a clue about how it all works. If you’ve always wanted to dip your toe into the social networking pool - but fear you’ll drown in a sea of unfamiliar terms and bizarre practices - here’s a quick guide to three of the most popular platforms:
Facebook According to silversurfers.com, Facebook is the platform of choice for the over-50s. Many older users believe that they will get even more value from the site as they grow older. What is Facebook? It’s a free social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload videos and images and send messages. You can find out what your friends are doing through a newsfeed, ‘like’ and publicly comment on items they have posted on their profiles, or contact them using a direct message (DM) only seen by the recipient. Facebook is the most popular of all social media platforms, so it’s very likely you’ll find someone you know there. On the downside, the site has been criticised for invasive advertising and for being vulnerable to hacking attacks and scams. It has also been accused of causing envy. When you see pictures of a party you weren’t invited to, or you watch your friends enjoying a holiday you could never afford, it may be hard to grit your teeth and press the ‘Like’ button.
Twitter According to statistics portal Statista, 27% of Twitter users in the UK are aged 45 and over. High profile ‘mature’ users include Donald Trump and Stephen Fry, both of whom have enjoyed a rather volatile relationship with the service. What is Twitter? Twitter is a free-to-use online news and social networking channel where users post and interact with short messages known as ‘tweets’. These messages are restricted to 140 characters, so Twitter probably won’t work for you if you’re the sort of person who likes to send long-winded ‘catch-up’ letters in Christmas cards. Tweeting is a great way to broadcast an opinion and connect with friends’ opinions. It’s also a shortcut method of finding what the public is thinking on any particular subject. Twitter
16
uses a hashtag (#) indexing system, so you can find particular topics quickly and easily – for example #midlifecrisis will lead you to the latest comments related to that subject. The downside is that it’s not really designed as a messaging service. The brevity of the ‘tweet’ – at approximately 30 words – means that you need to be skilled at condensing your message into a short, pithy sentence.
Instagram Instagram is the fastest growing social media network. It is currently more popular with the younger generation, but there are signs that older users are starting to catch on. What is Instagram? Instagram is a social networking app created so users can share photos and videos from a smartphone or tablet. As soon as you post a photo or video on Instagram, it is displayed on your profile, and anyone who follows you will also see your posts in their own news feed. Likewise, you’ll see posts from the users you choose to follow. It’s a simplified version of Facebook, but with an emphasis on mobile use and visual sharing. You can comment, ‘like’, tag people in photos, send private messages and post an image simultaneously on other social media sites where you have a profile. Instagram is a quick and easy way to show the world where you are and what you’re doing. On the negative side, you and your friends will only be able to use this app on iPhone and Android phones; because Instagram has been created for mobile phone and tablet users, it doesn’t work as well on a standard computer or laptop. If you’re still feeling confused about which platform to choose, don’t worry. Simply ask around to find out which sites your friends and relatives use. That way, if you have any problems finding your way around, you’ll always have someone to help. At first social media may feel like an alien world with its own particular language but once you’ve started, you’ll quickly get the hang of it. Before long you’ll be posting like a pro … or maybe even tweeting like a Trump?

Different Types of Holiday Insurance Buying holiday insurance can sometimes take a back seat when you’re planning to get away. It’s an important investment in your health and safety, however, offering protection and reassurance if something goes wrong when you’re a long way from home. The cost of holiday insurance depends on a number of factors including your age, the length of time you’ll be away, whether or not you’re travelling alone, and the types of activity on the agenda. A comprehensive ‘standard’ policy generally covers the following, although policies do vary: • Holiday cancellation or missed departure. • Theft. • Medical assistance. • Emergency repatriation. • Baggage loss or delay. • Other lost or damaged items. • Personal injury. • Cover for damage caused by you or a member of your group. So what other types of holiday insurance are available, and which might be suitable for you?
Single trip/annual or multi trip
If you only intend to take one break during a 12-month period, a single trip insurance policy would be the most cost-effective choice as long as it covers everything you need. Annual or multi trip insurance is more suitable if you’re going away more than once a year, but there’s usually a maximum allowable duration which is generally 90 days.
European/worldwide travel
The expense of repatriating travellers from countries outside Europe, or obtaining medical treatment in the USA for example, is very high. Insurance companies have to take this into account when pricing their policies, so if you’re only travelling to Europe the cost should be lower than for worldwide travel. Take care to check whether a specified number of days are mentioned in the policy. Your insurance will be invalid if you exceed this number, and you won’t be eligible to make any type of claim.
Winter/extreme sports
A ‘standard’ holiday insurance policy usually contains exclusion clauses relating to winter or extreme sports due to the additional risk of injury. Also, winter sports equipment is expensive, so you’ll need to pay more to cover it against loss or theft.
Gap year/backpackers’ insurance
Backpackers’ insurance provides cover for an extended length of time away from home, but there may be certain limitations specified in the policy, for example the number of times you can return to the UK. There could also be restrictions on returning home before the stated period ends, so it’s important to check the details with this type of policy. Unlike annual insurance where you can go
20
ARE YOU FULLY COVERED? away for several trips during a 12-month period, gap year and backpackers’ insurance covers one extended holiday break.
Family policies Family travel policies generally require all those included on the policy to live at the same address, and can be a cheaper option than insuring each family member individually. Some insurers offer higher rates of cover, or even free insurance for children under a certain age.
Group travel
Groups such as work colleagues, stag and hen parties, or school trips, where everyone travels to and from the same place, can use group travel insurance to save money. Some insurance companies offer one member of the group free insurance as an incentive.
Over 65s
Many insurers charge higher premiums as you get older, with some unwilling to provide cover for anyone over the age of 65. This is due to the increased risk of poor health, but there are some companies that offer holiday insurance specifically for this age group. You’ll probably pay a higher premium, however, as it is viewed as ‘specialist’ insurance.
Golf insurance
Although insurers perceive golf as a low risk sport, high value equipment means that a golfing holiday will need specialist insurance for potential loss, damage or theft of golf clubs and other items. Cover for green fees, should you be unable to play due to illness or other situations such as adverse weather conditions, may also be included.
Cruise holidays
Although you might expect a standard comprehensive insurance policy would provide all you need for cruising, this type of holiday introduces specific risks that wouldn’t exist on a ‘traditional’ holiday. These include cover for missing a port or destination on the itinerary, due to bad weather or poor timetabling by the cruise company. Other situations include being confined to your cabin because of sickness on-board ship, or missing an excursion that you’ve already paid for due to illness.
Caravanning holidays
When you take a caravan abroad, or even in this country, you’ll need to insure it in addition to your car. Some insurers offer increased protection for larger units, or for destinations further afield than Europe.
Pre-existing medical conditions
If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you might be tempted to take a chance with your holiday insurance and not disclose it. This can prove to be a very expensive mistake, however, as the cost of repatriation is extremely high. Fortunately, some insurance companies offer policies for those already suffering from a health condition. Although it will be more costly than buying a standard policy, it’s impossible to put a price on peace of mind while you’re away.

Protect Yourself Property fraud is on the increase and can be difficult to spot. Your property is more at risk if: • You’ve been a victim of identity theft. • You rent out your property. • You are not resident in the UK. • Your property is not occupied or is empty for long periods. • You don’t have a mortgage on the property. • Your property isn’t registered with Land Registry. • If your marriage or relationship has broken down. If your property is registered at Land Registry, you can take some simple steps to protect your property from being fraudulently sold or mortgaged: 1. Make sure your details are up-to-date: If your contact details are out of date then Land Registry cannot contact you. Land Registry allows three addresses to be registered against your property. These can include a postal address, email address and an address abroad. Having up-todate contact details means Land Registry can contact you with any queries or activity on your property.
FROM PROPERTY FRAUD
It is also important to ensure that your name is correct too. If you change your name by marriage or divorce, let Land Registry know so that the property register can be updated. 2. Register for the Property Alert Service: This free service from Land Registry is designed to alert you if certain activity occurs on your monitored properties, i.e. someone tries to put a mortgage on your property. This allows you to be fully informed at all times and take immediate action if necessary. You can get alerts for up to 10 properties so this is a great free service, particularly for second home owners and landlords. 3. Apply for a Restriction on your property: You can apply to have a restriction entered on to the title register of the property which restricts the registration of a transfer or mortgage unless a solicitor or conveyancer has certified that the person who signed the transfer or mortgage deed is the registered owner of the property. If you live at the property the Land Registry fee for putting a restriction on a property is £40.00. If you do not live at the property then Land Registry do not charge a fee for the restriction. THE ART OF DISPLAY
Would you like to create displays of your treasured possessions that show them off to their finest advantage? Our top ten tips are sure to help. 1. Consider what you are displaying, whether it is sturdy or fragile, valuable or everyday. Do you wish to admire it from afar and protect it from sun, dust or accidental damage? Or are you happy for it to be close to hand and perhaps picked up at will? You may find you can manage with a display on a mantelpiece, shelf or table top, or you may wish to invest in a specially designed cabinet, case or stand. If you opt for specialist display furniture, whether that is a former shop fitting or a set of glass shelves, choose pieces that complement the style and proportions of your home. 2. Good lighting makes all the difference to an effective display. For serious collectors, carefully positioned ceiling-mounted spotlights are the ideal solution, but if you experiment with an adjustable lamp you may well be able to provide a more informal (and much cheaper) quick fix for a simple domestic display. Think about where the light comes from: directly above, behind (for a dramatic silhouette) or from the front, and how ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ the bulb should be in order to enhance colour and texture. 3. Group objects together and they can be much more than the sum of their parts. Even the most unprepossessing of objects carries a certain weight when displayed in a group, and this sort of display is also ideal if some of the pieces are not exactly perfect, or if the items are not of great individual value or importance. A group display may consist of almost anything: a series of Delftware plates or tiles, a dozen framed silk headscarves, pebbles in graduating sizes, mirrored baubles, wooden shoe lasts, a row of modern chairs in sorbet shades…you can have great fun with almost anything you decide to gather together. 4. Displays of identical pairs of objects are probably the most simple, and often the most visually powerful, of all. Whether it’s a pair of silver candlesticks or two raffia-wrapped lamps, there’s something extremely pleasing about this mirroring and doubling. The only catch is that you must ensure your objects are placed evenly and symmetrically. If you’re not confident about judging by eye, there’s nothing wrong with using a tape measure! 5. When choosing a group of different objects to display, look for ways in which they will work together, whether by colour, size, shape, texture or proportion. It is important to have something that creates coherence, and don’t forget that what you leave out can be as important as what you put in. However much you love them, some objects may simply not fit well into the group. 6. Every time you display more than one object, you need to make a decision whether to opt for symmetry or asymmetry. It depends partly on the items you have and partly on your home and personal taste. Symmetrical displays tend to appear more classical, considered and refined, and suit traditional rooms; the Georgian period, for example, tended to emphasise the rules of symmetry. Asymmetry, on the other hand, is ideal for making an impact in a contemporary space, and can seem more spontaneous and intuitive. 7. Less can often be more, and a great way to make an impact with a display is by showing off a single, fabulous, huge object. Bear in mind that a large item needs space around
26

it in which to ‘breathe’, so ensure it doesn’t overwhelm its surroundings by giving it plenty of wall, floor, cabinet or shelf space, and don’t place furniture too close. 8. Small objects can be lost among the general furnishings of most rooms, so be particularly careful about how you display them. Try to ‘frame’ them within their surroundings – maybe in a specially designed cabinet or niche, on a side table rather than a coffee table, or on a plinth rather than a long, wide shelf, and they will demand an appreciative glance and a closer look. 9. Don’t be daunted by the thought of displaying large groups of paintings, prints or flat objects on a wall. Start by laying your potential group on the floor and assessing how well the elements cohere. Choose the piece that you wish to be most prominent, then surround it with pieces that work well alongside it, perhaps making a larger rectangle of the group, or else setting a consistent line along one side, the top or the bottom. 10. Finally, stand right back and get an overview of your final display. Does it need tweaking? Don’t be afraid to experiment and change things around. Whatever your choice of objects and however you have arranged them, try not to make the finished result overly formal or perfect. This is, after all, your home and not a gallery, and the only important thing is that you absolutely love what’s around you.

Max Coleman Managing Director
Kate Coleman Company Secretary
Gill Coleman Founder
Jeff Coleman Founder
Coleman Estates, 25 Church Street, Wellington, TF1 1DG
Call: 01952 244 990 www.colemanestates.com
Hello again from Wellington!
hopefully keep us top of the league for years to come (ok enough with the clichéd football analogy already.)
Last month, we reintroduced myself and Kate after deciding to rejoin ‘In and Around Magazine’ – this month I wanted to focus a bit more on our company in general! So what sort of company is Coleman Estates? It’s quite a difficult question to answer on the face of things; We’re a small family run business but our performance for both sales and lettings isn’t far off of the ‘big agents’ – Over the last year, I’m proud to say that:
Our sales department ranked 4th out of 20 local agents agreeing sales on over 100 properties Our lettings department ranked 3rd agreeing over 140 lets in the last year. To me, that’s like sitting in the top four at the premier league – healthy respect for our competition, a desire to push for more and recognition as a major player in our own right. So we’re just about volume and selling and letting as many houses as possible? No! The thing about being a manager and dragging your club out of the relegation zone (or recession in our case) is that you never really pause to take stock of what you’ve achieved and rest on your laurels, you constantly look towards the next match, the next season and a constant desire to improve – this is where our dedication to customer service comes into play. Our most recent landlord survey returned a response of 100% customer satisfaction and our sales department recently enjoyed double figures of beaming testimonials from happy customers; It’s this level of service that has helped us grow as a company and will
We’ve had recent addition to our office in the last month which we’re all thrilled about! Ready to work from the moment the clock strikes 9, in the office before any member of staff and permanently singing – I’m talking of course about our new DAB Radio! After sitting in a headache inducing cacophony of clicking keyboards, stapling and the odd bit of inane chatter for eight years, I finally decided to introduce a bit of music to the office – staff morale is up and sales have tripled* since the introduction of this wonderful bit of kit.The only issue is choosing what to listen to – Whilst I love listening to Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 because I am a 45 year old in a 31 year old’s body, our lettings negotiator would rather listen to Drake or Skepta *shudder*. This eventually brings me on to my point – Personal taste! Just like music, one person will walk into a house and see their dream home, another will barely be able to stifle their grimace until they make it back to their car. My advice would be to keep it simple and keep it neutral and appeal to the broadest market possible – repaint the beloved lime green kitchen, maybe put the ‘artistic’ modelling shoot canvases in the attic and get people imagining themselves living in your home rather than feeling like a guest for 20 minutes! In summation, we sell and let lots of houses, we look after our customers and we can offer pragmatic and down to earth advice on selling or letting your home – see you next month. *this is not true.
Max Coleman - BA (Hons) MNAEA Managing Director

Outdoor Joys THE BEST TECH TO TAKE OUTSIDE Some of the most entertaining outdoor toys are the simplest, such as the cute Swivel Car (around £22, with lots of firms offering very similar products). It’s a ride-on car with a difference: instead of pedalling or propelling it with your feet, you swivel the steering wheel and that generates movement. It’s small enough for toddlers and tough enough for big kids and even the odd adult. If you’d rather go for something more traditional, the Cozy Coupe - around £49 - has been a favourite of families for more than 30 years, and the iconic red and yellow version has been joined by dinosaur and police car versions. Complex toys can be fun too, of course. One kind of toy that’s improved dramatically in recent years is the electric car or bike for kids. It’s possible to get a decent trike for less than £40 that delivers 50 minutes of movement between charges, while around the £200 mark you’ll find impressive replicas of grown-up cars such as BMW’s futuristic electric i8. Remember that such vehicles do take a while to charge, so make sure you plug them in the night before you want to use them. If you’d rather not let your child loose behind the wheel but want to give them control of something fun, there’s a huge selection of radio controlled vehicles ranging from the toddler-friendly Little Tykes Tyre Twister (£39) to exceptionally fast scale models of performance cars such as Lamborghinis and Porsches. Even the most expensive of these are much cheaper than they used to be, with top-end models usually coming in well below £70. Radio controlled cars are fun, but radio controlled flying machines are even more fun. You know you’re living in the future when you can walk into your local toy shop and come out with a smartphone-controlled drone helicopter. Drones start at around £20 for basic ones and reach £190 for Star Wars-themed models, and drones with built-in cameras start at around £60. If you want to get serious, you can find a good selection of advanced drones with HD cameras and optical video stabilisers from around £300, rising to over £1,000 for high-end models. One word of warning with drones: their propellers can be sharp and cause injury if they bump into people, so it’s a good idea to look for one with a protective ring around the propellers if you’ll be giving it to a child or using it near kids or pets. And there are restrictions on where you can and can’t fly drones, such as in crowded areas or near airports. It’s a good idea to check up on the law before spending any money. There are also concerns over privacy: the neighbours probably won’t appreciate you flying a camera over their garden. Do you remember the days of potato guns and water pistols? They’ve become a lot more sophisticated, with products such as Nerf guns ranging from around £20 to the ridiculously overpowered N-Strike Mega Mastodon (£99), which fires 24 foam darts from a motorised revolving drum. Between it and the super-powered, super-soaking water pistols that have more in common with water cannons than the water pistols you remember from your own childhood, be wary of the weaponry you give your kids - because you can be sure you’ll be on the receiving end of the foam darts or freezing cold jets of water.

FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE
The Mytton & Mermaid Hotel Atcham, Shrewsbury SY5 6QG
T: 01743 761220
The Mytton and Mermaid is a family owned country house hotel situated on the banks of the River Severn in Shrewsbury. The village of Atcham is situated on the old A5 Roman Road which is about a 20-minute drive from Telford and is just opposite the entrance to Attingham Park This impressive grade II listed building is packed full of character features, it has been tastefully decorated and captures the charms of its original coaching inn days, reflecting an atmosphere of comfort and tranquillity. It is easy to see why this hotel is such a popular venue for weddings, it has beautiful surroundings and with a choice of rooms available they can cater for weddings of various sizes and are licenced for civil ceremonies. We had chosen to visit on a Friday evening which is Fish and Fizz night. We had a choice of ordering from the main menu or the special fish menu. The special Fish and Fizz menu had a selection of starters, mains, desserts and selection of cocktails too. Special offers are also available on purchasing a bottle of fizz if you are ordering off this menu. While we looked over the menus Nik ordered a pint of Shropshire Gold and I had a glass of Chambord Royale off the Fish and Fizz menu, which is a glass of prosecco with a raspberry liquor. There is also an extensive wine list available. For starters Nik chose the Tempura Battered Soft Shell Crab from the Fish and Fizz menu and I ordered the Deep Fried Goats Cheese from the main menu. While we waited for our starters to arrive we enjoyed a bowl of marinated olives and sun-dried tomatoes and a selection of freshly baked bread which were soon devoured.
38
FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT My goats cheese starter had a lovely crunchy coating of breadcrumbs and was delectably soft and warm on the inside, it was served with a fresh rocket and tomato salad, roasted fig chutney and red wine syrup - I really enjoyed this dish, lots of flavour and a great mix of textures.
The pannacotta was very light and luxuriously silky smooth, the crunchy caramelised apple balls were like delicate little toffee apples - amazing! My Eton mess was a great end to my meal, a lovely mix of whipped cream, meringue pieces, fresh raspberries, blackberries and a delicious fruit coulis.
Nik's crab was served with an Asian salad and a sweet chilli mayo. The delicate crab had a wonderfully light tempura batter and the fresh crab meat tasted fantastic with the chilli mayo.
The staff were all very helpful and informative and there was a great lively atmosphere in both the restaurant and bar area.
We both ordered from the special fish menu for our mains, Nik chose the Moules à la Crème and I ordered the Grilled Fillet of Seabass. Nik's mussels arrived in a large black cast iron pot and was served with a side of chunky hand cut chips and some wedges of freshly homemade bread. The succulently sweet mussels were perfect with the white wine cream sauce. The bread was perfect for mopping up the last of the delicious creamy sauce. The seabass was served on top of a chive and baby prawn risotto, charred spring onions, rocket salad and basil oil. The seabass was perfectly cooked and had a lovely crispy skin, the risotto was wonderfully creamy and the onions and salad worked well with the dish. Nik opted for a dessert off the main menu, Caramelised Apple Pannacotta and I decided on the Raspberry & Blackberry Eton Mess off the Fish and Fizz menu.
The Fish and Fizz menu is available every Friday evening alongside the main menu and live music starts at 9pm. On a Sunday you can enjoy a traditional Sunday lunch which is served from midday through until 9pm. Afternoon Tea is available Monday to Saturday from 2:30pm til 5:30pm - bookings are essential so please call to book a table. Brunch is served daily until 11am. If you want to make a night of it then why not stay over with a dinner, bed and breakfast package, great deals are available if you book direct. The Mytton & Mermaid Hotel offers great food in an amazing location and if you fancy trying the Fish and Fizz night for yourself then please find a 10% discount below.

Street Food
QHotels’ Telford Hotel & Golf Resort has launched a new and innovative conference menu, bringing street food to conferences and events in Shropshire. QHotels’ Telford Hotel & Golf Resort has launched a new and innovative conference menu, bringing street food to conferences and events in Shropshire. The hotel’s new lunch menu follows an intensive six-month period of research by QHotels, which took chefs from Telford Hotel & Golf Resort and its 25 other hotels, into cafes, large chain restaurants and small independents. The group’s chefs sampled the latest culinary trends to assess customers’ eating habits and preferences. The customer insight and research revealed that the rise of street food remains the biggest culinary trend to hit the UK, and is the cuisine of choice for Telford Hotel & Golf Resort’s conference customers.
AVAILABLE AT CONFERENCES WITH NEW MENU LAUNCH nuts to fennel seeds, giving delegates a choice of flavours and textures to be creative with, as well as a choice of completely ‘clean’ hot dishes. Matt Coathupe, Head Chef at Telford Hotel & Golf Resort, said: “The biggest challenge with conference and events menus is being able to produce dishes to suit a wide range of tastes and dietary requirements. Conference food generally consists of two to three safe and standard options, which is something that our new menu has changed. “The research behind the menu focused on understanding what our customers eat not when they’re at a conference, but what they’d choose at home, in a café or a restaurant. This not only means that conference dining should be more enjoyable, but also means it should be similar to delegates every day food choices, making time out of the office or on the road a little more familiar.” To find out more about conference and events at Telford Hotel & Golf Resort visit: www.qhotels.co.uk/our-locations/telford-hotelgolf-resort/conference-meetings/
The new ‘do it yourself’ street food offer allows delegates to play around with key components and flavours, to tailor dishes to their own preferences, as well as choose from a range of different menus, including Pan-Asian, Indian, Mexican, Japanese, boutique fish and chips and chicken. From pho noodle bowls, to steamed hirata buns, lamb koftas and roti wraps, the dishes have been influenced by popular cuisine from around the world. Also, inspired by the rising trend in clean eating, centrepiece salads will feature a selection of different raw ingredients, from

PETS:
If your dog has ever ingested a poisonous substance, you’ll know the sudden and devastating effect it can have on their health. Unfortunately, three commonly used foods regularly cause serious issues for dogs, often requiring emergency treatment by a vet. Chocolate Chocolate contains a poisonous substance called theobromine, which is derived from the cocoa plant. Amongst other symptoms it can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea, high temperature, irregular heart rhythm, and fitting. Dark chocolate contains more theobromine than milk or white chocolate, and it is not unusual for a dog to need veterinary intervention even when a small amount has been consumed.
THREE TYPES OF FOOD THAT ARE POISONOUS TO YOUR DOG Onions, leeks, chives, garlic and shallots All members of the allium family, these foods can cause anaemia in dogs and are poisonous both in their raw and cooked form - even something as innocuous as onion gravy can cause a severe reaction in some dogs. They contain organosulphides which attack the red blood cells over a period of time. After a few days you might notice your dog has an upset stomach, is lethargic, sleepy, or breathing rapidly.
Grapes, raisins, currants and sultanas These can all be fatal to your dog, although the dried versions are believed to be more toxic. Some dogs are able to eat these foods with no ill-effects, but others experience serious illness over a period of several days, with vomiting and diarrhoea, and in some cases kidney failure a few days after ingestion. www.pdsa.org.uk/taking-care-of-yourpet/poisons-and-hazards www.thekennelclub.org.uk/ media/605397/poisons.pdf

Recipe
APRICOT JAM SWISS ROLL Great for a teatime treat, this light sponge cake is best eaten on the day it’s made. For a chocolate version replace 25g of the flour with 25g sifted cocoa powder.
Ready in 40 minutes, plus cooling time Serves 8 - 10 INGREDIENTS: • 100g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling • 3 large eggs • 100g self-raising flour FILLING • 100g unsalted butter, softened • 225g icing sugar • Few drops vanilla extract • 6 tbsp apricot conserve
1. Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas 6. Lightly grease a 33x23cm Swiss roll tin and line the base and sides with baking paper. Lightly grease the baking paper. 2. Place the eggs and sugar in a large mixing bowl and whisk with a hand-held electric whisk until the mixture is very thick and pale and the whisk leaves a trail when lifted out – this will take 8 to 10 minutes. 3. Sift the flour over the whisked mixture, and gently fold it in with a metal spoon until just incorporated. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin, tilting it gently to make sure the mixture spreads evenly into the corners. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes until the sponge is pale golden and springs back when lightly pressed with your fingertips. Whilst the cake is baking, place a sheet of baking paper on a clean damp tea towel and sprinkle with 2tbsp caster sugar. 5. Quickly invert the hot sponge onto the paper and peel off the lining paper. Trim the edges of the sponge and roll up firmly from one short end with the paper inside. Leave to cool completely. 6. To make the buttercream filling, beat together the butter and vanilla extract then gradually beat in the icing sugar until smooth and creamy. 7. Carefully unroll the cooled cake and remove the paper. Spread the buttercream over the sponge then spread the apricot conserve on top. Gently reroll and serve sliced.
TIP Use any fruit conserve you like or try lemon or lime curd for a really tangy filling.

These Boots (and Bodies)
ARE MADE FOR WALKING
May is National Walking Month. It’s hard to believe we need a National Month to promote the default way we move our bodies around, but many of us now walk far less than previous generations did. Yet walking can reduce your risk of disease, improve your physical and mental health, help the environment and improve your social life, too. The Health Benefits Walking is often underrated as exercise, but it can have a highly positive impact on your health. Regular walking is proven to reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, obesity and some cancers, and helps maintain musculoskeletal health. On average, you can burn 400kcal a day by walking 10,000 steps. Choosing to walk instead of using transport reduces pollution, too, potentially boosting everyone’s health. Walking can also lift your mood and help reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Countryside walks have the added benefit of nature, tranquillity and fresh air. Luckily, the UV light we absorb while walking can improve our health too. While our skin and eyes do need protection from unhealthy UV exposure, some UV light is essential for good health. It can alleviate depression, help to regulate our body clock and stimulate Vitamin D production. Vitamin D boosts our immune system, aids blood cell formation and helps us absorb calcium and phosphorous, necessary for healthy bones and teeth. The World Health Organisation says 5 to 15 minutes of casual sun exposure of hands, face and arms 2 to 3 times a week during summer is enough to keep vitamin D levels high.
Other Benefits of Walking
Accessibility: Walking can be done anytime and anywhere. You’re not obviously ‘exercising’, either, saving you embarrassment if you’re self-conscious. Social: You can walk with a family member or friend - this time away from the usual distractions can allow you to spend quality time together and enjoy a good chat. You may also meet other people out and about, and of course, you can always join a local walking group, a local health walk or the Ramblers (previously the Ramblers’ Association). See the links at the end for inspiration. Environmental: Every time we walk to work, school, shops or social activities instead of using transport, we reduce pollution and congestion. This helps the environment and improves the health and safety of ourselves and our families, not just now but in the future, too. Financial: Simple walks on the flat require no special clothes or equipment. It’s cost-effective exercise that can save you money on travel costs too.
Walking Dos and Don’ts
DO wear comfortable clothes and footwear. Comfy shoes, trainers or boots and your usual clothes are fine for walking around streets or park pathways, but if you’re walking in rural or hilly areas, or in bad weather, you should buy proper walking shoes or boots and a waterproof coat. For the very adventurous, waterproof trousers might be handy too. DO Ensure you wear weather-appropriate clothing. In winter, wearing layers and donning a scarf, hat, gloves and waterproof coat will keep you warm and dry. In warmer weather, a sun hat
46
and sunglasses are essential (your eyes can be damaged by the sun’s UV rays as easily as your skin can). Talking of your skin, remember to apply sun cream before setting out and take it with you for a reapplication if you’ll be out for some time. DO stay hydrated. Always take a drink, especially on hot days and long or rural walks – you may be a long way from cafés or shops. DO be prepared; know where you’re going, what weather you can expect and how long the walk will take. Be aware of your personal safety (which may mean telling someone where you’re going), and ensure you take a snack. A charged mobile phone is a good idea too. DON’T ignore pain from footwear. Head back. Blisters can quickly become agonising. DON’T ignore weather warnings. Remember, weather can change very quickly. DON’T ignore the advice of human or printed walking guides. Your local country park is a far cry from an exposed, remote, hilly trail. Don’t attempt long or challenging hikes until you’re fitter, more experienced and well-prepared. DON’T play music so loudly that you’re unaware of what’s happening around you.
Make a Walk Part of Your Day
Walk the children to school, add a walk or extend one at the beginning or end of your commute, extend your dog’s walks, choose the stairs over the lift or escalator.

• Around 6.5 million people in the UK provide unpaid care for a disabled, ill or older relative or friend; 2 million are older people with their own health problems. • At least 380,000 older carers in England provide 50+ hours of care a week without any help from their local authority. • Over 100,000 people in their eighties and beyond are caring full-time. • 38% of carers in a recent MND Association survey were unaware of their right to a Carers’ Assessment. “We know that caring for a loved one can be a rewarding experience, but without the right support at the right time, caring can also have a huge impact on a carer’s emotional and physical health, work and finances,” says Heléna Herklots CBE, Chief Executive of charity Carers UK. Research shows that caring can potentially damage carers’ own physical and mental health, and their relationships with partners, family and friends. It can also isolate them and make it difficult or impossible to hold down a job, even driving them into poverty.
Are You a Hidden Carer?
Heléna Herklots CBE, said: “Carers have told us that it makes a huge difference to their lives when they are supported by their local services and communities…whether that’s offering a flexible GP appointment, having flexible working policies or raising awareness in schools of caring, it can make a positive difference.”
Sources of Support for Carers
If you’re a carer, help is available and it’s vital that you get the support you need. The NHS Choice Care Page has an extensive section for carers, covering assessments, money and legal matters and caring issues. www.nhs.uk/ conditions/social-care-and-supportguide/Pages/what-is-social-care.aspx The eight charities below support Carers Week and the services they offer include counselling, practical and financial help, respite care and advice. It’s worth investigating other charities specific to the condition of the person you care for, too.
Age UK offers counselling, support groups, day and respite care, and advice on Carers’ Assessments and benefits. www.ageuk.org.uk/homeand-care/advice-for-carers/are-you-a-carer; Tel: 0800 678 1174
“Please don’t call me a carer - I don’t want that title. I am her son, not a carer!”
Carers Trust offers individually tailored support, services and activities for those caring, unpaid, for a relative or friend. www. carers.org; email support@carers.org; Tel: 0300 772 9600
“I pop in to my neighbour every day and do all her shopping and cleaning for her, but I am not her carer. They go in to get her up and washed.”
Carers UK supports, connects and campaigns for carers with its network of partners. www.carersuk.org/help-and-advice; email: advice@carersuk.org; Tel: 0808 808 7777 Mon-Fri 10am-4pm
These responses, gathered by a recent campaign to identify ‘hidden’ carers, highlight a common problem. Many carers don’t see themselves as carers if they don’t help someone dress, take medication, move about or go to the loo - or if they’re ‘just’ a husband, wife, mum, dad, son, daughter, friend or good neighbour.
Independent Age provides free advice and information to older people and their families. www.independentage.org; email: advice@independentage.org; Tel: 0800 319 6789 Mon-Fri 10am4.30pm
Yet helping with shopping, laundry, cleaning, cooking, formfilling or money management is all part of caring, and caring is caring - whoever it’s for. Many responses also showed carers aren’t getting the advice they need to access financial, practical and emotional support for themselves and those they care for.
Building Carer Friendly Communities If you’re an employer, give any employees who are carers as much flexibility as possible. This could mean: • An extended lunch hour, giving them time to eat and check on

Top Tips
Late nights, early mornings and night-time wanderings can really have an effect on your child’s wellbeing (and your stress levels). If your child is struggling to sleep, these tips might help. Get into a routine According to Jessica Alexander of The Sleep Council, a bedtime routine is vital. She told the NHS, “A bedtime ritual teaches the brain to become familiar with sleep times and wake times. It programmes the brain and internal body clock to get used to a set routine.”
Ban screen time before bed The blue light emitted by smartphones, tablets and other digital devices has been found to disrupt sleep. A Norwegian study of 10,000 teenagers found that the more time the teenagers spent on electronic devices during the day, the less sleep they got. So keep phones, tablets and TVs out of your child’s room and ban them from being used for at least an hour before bedtime.
Get plenty of exercise and fresh air Both exercise and time spent outdoors have been found to promote a better night’s sleep. So take the kids to the park, or play out in the garden in the afternoon.
Try calming music Quiet, soothing music can help your child to relax. If you play the same song every night, it can even become a sleep trigger. Good choices include Kesang Marstrand’s ‘In the Land of Dreams’, and ‘Hello Night’, which you can find on YouTube, or play direct on www.kesangmarstrand.com. You could also try recordings of white noise, which some children find relaxing. Image: Children’s pyjamas by Panda & Ping, www.pandaping.com

TO HELP YOUR CHILD SLEEP Cut down on sugar Fruit juice, squash, sugary drinks and caffeine can all stop your child from getting to sleep. Try to make sure they stick to water or milk for a few hours before bedtime. And cut out any sugary snacks, or anything that might cause bloating or trapped wind. Even naturally sweet foods, such as honey, can have an effect on your child’s sleep pattern.
Plan ahead What excuses does your child use for getting out of bed in the night? What can you do to make it easier for them to stay in bed? Little things, like a bottle of water on the bedside table, or an extra blanket for when it gets cold, can help to cut down on the excuses.
Make peace We all find it hard to get to sleep if we’re worried or stressed. Your child is no different. If they’re upset because you’re cross, or if they’re worried about an argument from earlier in the day, they might struggle to drop off. So try to make peace and keep calm. And take time to discuss anything that might be bothering them, from exam nerves to fall-outs with friends.
Find out what works, and stick to it All children are different, and the perfect solution for one might not work for another. Some parents swear by bathing their child before bed; others find a bath wakes their child up. A few drops of lavender essential oil on their pillow helps some children to drop off, while others just dislike the smell. Some children sleep better in complete darkness; others need a nightlight to feel secure enough to rest. As with all parenting, there is an element of trial and error involved, but when you find what works for your child, build it into your daily routine.

When Those 'Golden Years'
ARE TARNISHED BY STRESS
The expression ‘golden years’ refers to that period in our lives in between retirement and age-related physical decline, a time when we are supposed to enjoy the greatest quality of life. This view is supported by statistics: last year a survey of more than 300,000 adults by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that happiness and life satisfaction peaks between the ages of 65 and 79. In addition to the higher levels of contentment we can expect at this age, many of us can look forward to a comfortable lifestyle. The ONS has also revealed that today’s millionaires are overwhelmingly likely to be from the Baby Boomer generation (born between 1946 and 1964), and 51% of people aged 55 or over in the UK claim to have upwards of £500,000 in total wealth. There’s a general assumption that life is easier and sweeter in our later years and statistics do seem to suggest that once we pass the flinty milestone of middle age, most of us can look forward to some ‘golden years’. But while life is good for some, others may find the golden lifestyle they had hoped for becomes tarnished by unexpected responsibilities and stress. Ironically, it seems that the older generation’s knack for acquiring wealth and property has been partly responsible for this situation. In these insecure economic times, many grownup children are staying on in the family home as they save for a place of their own, or relying on financial handouts to get by. Childcare may also be required, and however welcome that duty may be, no-one would deny that looking after young grandchildren can be tiring. Often it’s not just the younger generation who are in need of help. People are living longer and it’s not unusual to find individuals in their 60s and 70s supporting their elderly parents, sometimes with full-time care. When family members experience illness, disability or financial problems, it’s natural to want to help, but in our rush to support our nearest and dearest it’s easy to ignore the fact that age is creeping up on us. The youthful resilience that once helped us cope with stress starts to ebb away, leaving us more vulnerable to its effects. During a recent study, the Harvard Medical School found that stress has a powerful effect on the human body. When we are stressed the part of the brain that processes emotions such as fear and anger sends out instructions to the body to release the white blood cells (used to fight infection and injury). These cells cause inflammation of the arteries and this can lead to angina, heart attacks and strokes if the stress is allowed to continue. Other potentially harmful hormones, equally damaging in the long term, are also released during stressful episodes. Research now suggests that too much stress can suppress the immune system, lead to depression and even shorten lives. Signs of stress can include feeling overwhelmed, guilty, lonely and constantly anxious, as well as lacking interest in activities

you have previously enjoyed. You may also feel constantly fatigued, or become easily irritated. Physical changes can include significant changes in weight, headaches and neck or lower back pain. Of course, if family members are dependent upon you for support, it may not be possible to change your situation, but following the steps below may help: • Ask for help from friends and family – don’t wait for it to be offered. • Do your best to get enough sleep and exercise. • •.Set realistic goals by breaking large tasks up into small ones. • If you’re worried about your finances, ask family members to contribute, or check out any state benefits that may be available. • If you are a full-time carer, research what help is available on a local level, including groups where you can meet others in a similar situation. • Keep in regular touch with family and friends. • Make time each week to do something that you enjoy. • Consider meditation relaxation.
or
mindfulness
exercises
to
aid
If none of this helps, the next step should be to visit your doctor to explain how you feel. If family members are depending on you, you’ll need to stay mentally and physically strong, so don’t be afraid to use all the medical and practical resources that are available to you. Fortunately, even in these days of austerity and local service cuts there are still organisations you can turn to for help. Try Independent Age (www.independentage.org) or Age UK (www.ageuk.org.uk) to pick up some valuable information and advice. Sharing your feelings and concerns with others is an important first step. Hopefully it won’t be long before you find the support you need, making your life less stressful and bringing you a little closer to those golden years you so richly deserve.

Postural/Sedentary Pain I thought in this month’s article I would talk about a condition which is defiantly on the rise and that’s Postural/Sedentary pain. You may be wandering what this is, well it is pain related to lack of activity in our lives and the stress placed on our postural set causing pain. It is somewhat unusual as we often associate pain problems with trauma or sudden movements that cause pain, but we are seeing more and more postural pain associated with inactivity.
these problems when so many parts of our lives are becoming sedentary?
The ever increasing technology/IT in our lives is having a detrimental effect on the human body, especially at work where more and more occupations involve often lengthy periods of time sat at a computer or a laptop. It’s not just at work for example internet shopping has lead to a reduction in people shopping on the high street and so becoming more sedentary.
It is important to try to take regular exercise whether it is a brisk walk for 30-40 minutes, going to the gym, taking part in competitive sports or even just being on your feet and moving around rather than sitting in front of the TV every night.
The fact of the matter is the human form through the years has evolved through movement and so you could argue that we are not designed to be sedentary in the same posture for hours on end. The price of sitting for too long has been well documented to increase chances of heart disease, cancer and diabetes and even short periods of activity can reduce that risk. In the clinic the number of patients being treated for neck and back related problems relating to inactivity significantly exceeds those doing physical jobs. So how can we prevent
In the workplace: It is vitally important to take regular breaks to move out of set postures regularly even if it’s just to stand and stretch on occasions. Secondly make sure during break times you don’t just go a sit in the canteen or staff area but go for a short brisk walk. Thirdly make sure you work station has been assessed and set up to suit your individual needs. Outside of work:

Whether living at home or in care people with dementia are at risk of becoming isolated and lonely. As members of the Dementia Action Alliance and the Safe Places Scheme, and with many staff being Dementia Friends, the Ironbridge Gorge Museums do all they can to make a visit as stress free and enjoyable as possible.

Use the Summer Months As we all know, it’s very easy to put on weight during the winter without even realising it. The same applies to your dog, who might currently be displaying a larger than expected stomach - but it’s easy to help them lose weight and become fitter.
TO HELP YOUR DOG BECOME FIT AND HEALTHY
Not just walks Variety is the key to faster weight loss, and incorporating play into their exercise regime will work wonders. You can build a home-made agility course using large boxes and tubes, or buy the ready-made versions from pet stores and supermarkets. Hide and seek, or playing ball games on the beach will also be well received.
It’s not always obvious that your dog is gaining weight though, so it’s a good idea to have regular checks using your vet’s scales. Taking photos of your dog every few weeks during the whole year will also reveal any additional poundage.
Portion control Exercise plus careful control over how much your dog eats is a powerful combination for losing weight. It’s so easy to lose track of their food intake during a day, but choose a good quality food that will be easily digested.
So what else can you do to help them shed their excess weight during the longer days of summer?
Help from your vet Most vets run weight-loss clinics which are useful if you also have any health concerns about your dog. The vet can offer valuable advice, and make sure you’re giving them the correct food.

British Beauty This month we’re celebrating British beauty brands, from boutique perfumers to global bestsellers. The founders of Scottish skincare brand Ishga include a beauty therapist, a scientist and a seaweed specialist. So it’s perhaps no surprise that Ishga products harness the power of organic seaweed to deliver noticeable, lasting results. Along with Hebridean seaweed, key ingredients include thistle oil, jojoba oil and aloe vera. Ishga products are a real pleasure to use and the brand has built up a devoted fan base (which includes me). You’ll find the Ishga range in a number of fivestar spas across the UK, as well as online. If your skin has a tendency to feel dry and tight, try the Hebridean Marine Toner, £25. It’s really hydrating and packed with anti-oxidants; see www.ishga.co.uk. Bradford born Leighton Denny is probably best known for his nail varnishes. There are now 101 of them, in pretty much every colour you could want. But Leighton’s talent doesn’t stop there. His tanning products, lip colours and fragrances have attracted a league of fans in their own right. His perfume Light and Dark Lively, £43.50, beat numerous big brand top-sellers to be crowned Elle Magazine’s Readers’ Choice in the Fragrance Foundation UK awards last year. It’s a unisex fragrance that’s citrusy, woody and very wearable; see www. ld-boutique.com. Narynda Kumar first started experimenting with skincare when she developed stress-related dermatitis. Rather than resorting to steroid creams, she created a balm using the beeswax from hives in her garden. It was so successful that she made more for friends. As demand grew, Narynda decided to take the plunge and set up her own business. She created a range of skincare products using natural ingredients, such as beeswax, oat extracts and seed oils. To begin with, Narynda sold her skincare products at craft fairs and farmers’ markets, but they’re now available from online retailers such as notonthehighstreet.com and Love Lula, as well as from Narynda’s own website. Try the Day Cream, £17.50. It’s gentle enough for even sensitive skin, but powerful enough to give your skin a real boost; see www.narynda.com. Spanish-born Marina Barcenilla now lives in Glastonbury, where she’s been creating award winning fragrances for several years. One of her perfumes, India, was named Best New Independent Fragrance by the Fragrance Foundation UK. While I do like India, my favourite has to be Spring Rain, £70. With notes including bergamot mint, rosemary, geranium, rose, blood orange, lemon and Indian frankincense, it’s fresh, vibrant and unlike anything else on the market; see www. mbparfums.com. Akamuti was launched by aromatherapist Lindsey Hedges back in 2003. Since then it’s developed a reputation for great quality, natural products. Everything is handcrafted, using ethically sourced sustainable ingredients, such as seed and nut oils, organic shea butter and essential oils. Every product I’ve tried feels really decadent – nourishing, soothing and a real joy to use. The Fragrant Tranquillity Bath Salts, £8.50, for instance, are a real treat at the end of a busy day. They leave skin feeling super soft, and smell divine; see www. akamuti.co.uk.

Books
RELATIONSHIPS This month’s books are all about relationships, from first loves and families to fleeting friendships.
Lucky Boy – Shanthi Sekaran
Mexican Solimar risks everything to start a new life in America, but as an illegal immigrant she has few rights. When she’s thrown into a detention centre, her son is placed in foster care. Kavya is an American-Indian chef desperate for a child. When she’s given Solimar’s toddler to care for it seems like a dream come true. One boy – two mothers, both of whom will do everything in their power in order to keep him. An emotional rollercoaster of a read, this looks set to become one of this year’s bestsellers.
The Lonely Hearts Hotel – Heather O’Neill
Pierrot and Rose grow up together in a Montreal orphanage. They bond over a shared love of entertaining people, but go their separate ways as teenagers. Reunited years later, they set out to realise their childhood dream of running their own stage show. Their path isn’t an easy one, however. They both have demons to face, and Rose’s wants her dead. A highly entertaining read, with beautiful, lyrical prose and characters you’ll be rooting for from the beginning.
A Big Dose of Lucky (Secrets) – Marthe Jocelyn
When the Canadian orphanage they live in burns down in 1964, seven teenage girls set out to discover the secrets of their pasts. Seven authors have each chosen one girl’s story to write. The result is the Secrets series. In A Big Dose of Lucky, Malou heads to a small town in Ontario, hoping to find her birth parents. Malou is mixed race, shy and desperate to fit in. The truth of her birth may give her the family she craves, even if it’s not the one she imagined. An enjoyable read that will leave you eager to read the rest of the series.
A Gentleman in Moscow – Amor Towles
The gentleman of the title is Count Alexander Rostov. Following the Russian Revolution, the Count is sentenced to house (or in this case, hotel) arrest, indefinitely. Given work as a waiter in the hotel restaurant, he forges close friendships with some of the other inhabitants. While his view is mainly confined to what he can see out of his tiny window, Rostov is able to observe and ruminate on a tumultuous Russia over the course of four decades. You’ll savour every word.
My Sweet Revenge – Jane Fallon
When Paula finds out her husband is having an affair, she decides to win him back – so that she can be the one who breaks the marriage up. She befriends his mistress, Saskia, and sets out on a mission to lose weight, get fit and become the woman he wants. Paula recruits Saskia’s husband, Josh, to help and together they set out to make the cheaters’ lives a misery. An easy read that’s perfect for lazy sunny afternoons.
See You in the Cosmos – Jack Cheng
11 year old Alex loves everything to do with space. So he builds a rocket and sets off for a rocket festival in Mexico. His plan is to launch his rocket into space, attached to an iPod on which Alex is recording his thoughts and feelings about his family and the people he meets on his journey. While it’s been catalogued as a children’s book, See You in the Cosmos definitely has crossover appeal. Fresh, imaginative and full of energy, this is perfect for fans of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

BEAUTY & FASHION
5 Minute Fixes Nails Inc’s Gel One Coat polish delivers,
as the saying goes, what it says on the tin. You get a glossy, gel-like finish, in just one coat. It lasts for ages, particularly if you have time to apply a base coat and top coat. Even on its own, it should stay chip free for a few days. Perfect for a quick pedicure to match your new summer sandals, Gel One Coat also contains biotin to help strengthen your nails. If you’re looking for a suits-all summery pink, try Portobello Mews. Exclusive to Marks and Spencer, Gel One Coat polishes cost £13 each. See www.marksandspencer.com. The phrase ‘flawless’ gets rather overused in the beauty industry, but in this case it really is well-deserved. The Mineral Air Airbrush Foundation System sprays a light mist of foundation to give you an even, smooth base coverage in seconds. The foundation is mixed with air, so you only end up using a few drops, meaning skin doesn’t feel too suffocated. It is quite easy to overdo it, so you’ll want to aim to build up colour gradually. The full Mineral Air Airbrush Foundation System comes with a choice of seven shades of foundation and a liquid blush. At £114.99, it’s certainly not cheap, but at least you don’t need

GREAT RESULTS WITH MINIMUM EFFORT
to use a separate primer or concealer. It’s exclusive to www.idealworld.tv. Natural skincare brand Optiat has recently brought out a new collection of clay masks. 100% natural, the masks are formulated with ingredients such as exfoliating organic hemp husks, kaolin clay, activated charcoal and essential oils. They only need to be left on for five minutes to give you a deep, gentle clean. Skin feels softer, smoother and fresher. See www.optiat.com. While it isn’t an instant fix, you’ll reap the rewards from Murad’s Retinol Youth Renewal Serum pretty quickly nonetheless. 93% of testers saw a reduction in lines and wrinkles in just two weeks. It only takes a minute to massage the serum into your skin before bed each night. The retinol helps to boost cell renewal and freshen skin. I was really impressed with the results; my skin felt softer, plumper and less tired looking within just a few days. I have quite sensitive skin so can’t always use retinol creams, but this was gentle enough not to cause any irritation. (I did get a couple of spots in the first week, but they soon disappeared.) Safety First As a parent, your main priority is keeping your child safe. Children, however, often have other ideas. From launching themselves off the back of the sofa to chewing on gravel, they seem to have an innate ability to endanger themselves. Thankfully, it’s never been easier for parents to learn basic first aid.
Learn first aid at home, for free While nothing beats hands on training, a video course can help prepare you for an emergency. ChannelMum.com has teamed up with St John Ambulance to produce a series of short first aid videos aimed at parents. They cover everything from seizures and choking to allergic reactions and burns. Available to watch for free on www. channelmum.com/firstaidcourse, the videos offer practical advice that’s simple to follow and easy to remember. Most are just a few minutes long, so you could plan to watch one a day in your lunch break. www.futurelearn.com also runs regular free online first aid courses. They’re mainly video based, with some articles, group discussions and quizzes.
Quick home fixes Around 60 children die in household accidents every year. So it’s well worth taking some time to look for any potential hazards. Try to see things from your child’s point of view – get on your hands and knees if needs be. What sharp corners could they bump into? What furniture could tip over if they tried to climb it? What might they be tempted to chew or taste? Simple fixes include: • Securing heavy items, such as TVs and bookcases, so they can’t topple over if your child pulls at them, or uses them as a climbing frame. • Locking away any toxic substances, including household cleaning products. Dishwasher tablets are often brightly coloured and very appealing to
64
PARENTING a young child, but they can be deadly if swallowed. • Tying up any blind cords and other strings that a child could get caught up on. • Cutting up grapes, cherry tomatoes and other fruit lengthwise, before giving them to your child, to minimise the risk of choking.
New car seat regulations You may have heard that new car seat rules have been introduced, banning backless booster seats for young children. All the rules actually mean is that manufacturers can’t introduce new models of backless booster seats for children shorter than 125cm or weighing less than 22kg. So if you already use a booster seat, you don’t have to change it. That being said, high back booster seats have been found to offer much greater protection to young children than backless ones. So it might be time for an upgrade. If you are planning to buy a new seat, look for one that offers some side impact protection, such as those by Diono. The Diono MXT, £85, is a good choice. Unlike some seats, both height and back width can be adjusted very easily, so it can be used for children between 97 and 160cm tall. There’s a choice of four colours and the covers are removable and washable. Our testers (aged five and seven) found the MXT very comfortable. It also kept them in an upright position when they slept, rather than allowing them to slump over. And they loved the snack trays (mainly for storing seashells and crayons) - see www.uk.diono.com.

Challenging Road Run
OF 32 HISTORIC STEAM MACHINES THROUGH IRONBRIDGE GORGE
An eclectic collection of over 30 machines will take part in a challenging road run around the Ironbridge Gorge on Saturday, 13th May when engines and drivers will be tested with steep climbs and gentle descents.
Fodens and Fowlers. Some of these engines are especially rare, particularly The Chief, a huge early Victorian ploughing engine, as well as the Lord Doverdale, one of the last commercially working steam road engines. The only surviving Agri Tractor from the six originally built will also be joining the Road Run along with the Gold Medal Tractor, which took part in the Land’s End to John O’Groats race.
It will set out from Blists Hill Victorian Town, where they will also be ‘in steam’ on Sunday 14th May for all to see. The spectacular Steam Road Run will visit many of the Museum’s sites and historic monuments in The Gorge.
Many of the drivers will be wearing Victorian costume and some will be pulling period living vans and tractors. The crews and engines will also be judged by roving assessors on their historical accuracy, time keeping and even crew cleanliness.
Part of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the spectacular Steam Road Run will visit many of the Museum’s sites and historic monuments in the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site.
All the engines will be available to view on Sunday, 14th May to visitors at Blists Hill Victorian Town where steam enthusiasts get to meet the crews and see the magnificent machines.
The 32 steam machines will include a variety of makes and types ranging from traction engines and steam lorries to road locomotives and ploughing engines with Sentinels,

Calling all Parents and Grandparents!
COULD YOU SPARE A FEW HOURS A WEEK TO HELP A LOCAL FAMILY?
Being a parent can be hard work!! Things don’t always go to plan and sometimes we could all do with a little extra support to give our children the best start in life and to enjoy the precious time when they are small. Home-Start Telford and Wrekin is a local charity supporting families who may be struggling with issues such as loneliness, depression, developmental or health concerns, poverty, bereavement, etc. We recruit and train volunteers, who are usually parents themselves, who then visit the families for a few hours each week offering friendship, advice, emotional and practical support. We offer our volunteers ongoing training, support and traveling expenses, plus a Safeguarding Certificate and current DBS. We have a volunteer preparation course starting on 27th April at Hadley Learning community (HLC). This course covers everything you would need to know to support a family eg equal opportunities, mental health awareness, safe guarding and child protection, confidentiality, professional boundries, positive parenting etc If you think you could become a Home-Start Volunteer, please call the Home-Start Office on 01952 872280 or visit our website www.homestarttelfordandwrekin.co.uk

A Home
WITH CHARACTER What about woodwork?
There’s more to interior style than eye-catching accessories. Consider introducing an appealing sense of charm and character with these interesting ideas. Is your home lacking in an indefinable something? Has it lost its period features? Would it benefit from a dash of gravitas, some appealing detailing or maybe a larger intervention that restores authenticity or aids functionality? While wallpaper, paint, furniture and window treatments can go a long way towards creating a beautiful interior, they can’t solve every problem. Sometimes it is worth digging a little deeper and considering some more architectural alterations – though they don’t necessarily have to cost a fortune. Here are a few suggestions.
Improve your floors
In many a living room that lacks storage, the answer is easy: build across the recesses either side of the fireplace, with cupboards below and display shelving above. Functional and good looking – and the same goes for alcove shelving elsewhere, window seats, wardrobes and other forms of built-in joinery (even kitchen and bathroom units). As with mouldings, however, do take the time to consider how these additions work with your home overall, so that they complement it in terms of both scale and detailing. And, naturally enough, if you are the proud owner of completely inappropriate built-in storage or seating, you might want to plan for removing and replacing them when possible. You can buy panelling off the peg or, as here, made bespoke to suit your room. Price varies, Titchmarsh & Goodwin: 01473 252158; www.titchmarsh-goodwin.co.uk.
If you have original timber boards beneath your floor coverings, you are very lucky. And if they are in good condition, luckier still. Sanding them back, then staining and/or oiling them, is a relatively straightforward procedure for a competent DIYer who is willing to hire the right equipment (don’t forget lots of sandpaper and a face mask) and spend the time – or you can employ a professional. If the boards are in poor condition, renovation is possible to an extent, or you might consider replacing them with reclaimed boards that match the style of your home. Homes built between the late 19th century and the middle of the 20th often feature colourful, patterned geometric or encaustic tiles, generally along the hallway and garden path. Even if they are discoloured or damaged, chances are the tiles are repairable. Find the right specialist to sort them out, and the results will be dramatic.
Think about mouldings From skirting to ceiling roses, door surrounds to dados, mouldings are the building blocks of a home, contributing enormously to its overall look. Getting them right is not always straightforward; it is worth researching carefully, as they should correspond in scale and design to the age and style of your architecture. Modern replicas are often available, but sometimes it is necessary to go to a specialist, and this is not cheap. How easy they are to alter will depend very much on your individual circumstances – but this is definitely a project to bear in mind if you are considering renovation work.
76
Another element of a home that can easily be overlooked is your doors. You might never think about them from one year to the next but, in fact, replacing poor quality or badly designed interior doors with beautiful ones is a major enhancement. In a period home you might seek out reclaimed examples or find well-made reproductions; you could also decide whether it would be a good idea to paint them or, conversely, strip them (the same goes for wooden shutters, if you possess them). While on the subject of woodwork, might panelling of some form enhance a room or hallway? It comes in a wide variety of styles, from Jacobean to contemporary, and is relatively easy to fit – especially if your walls are straight, smooth and dry.
Get the lighting right There are two reasons for improving your built-in lighting – either the illumination within the rooms is inadequate or imbalanced, or the look of the fittings themselves could be improved. You might decide to be discreet and opt for minimal downlighters in the ceiling, choose simple wall lights or versatile LED strips, or go for full-on drama with huge, eye-catching chandeliers; either way, plan this well and you will love your new look.
All in the details
Harrogate Victorian pattern floor tiles in traditional red, black and white, £96.32, Original Style: 01392 473000; www.originalstyle.com.
Cupboard knobs, door and window furniture, light switches, plug sockets, even the humble pull cord – such small details build up into a big picture of your home which make an enormous difference to your perception of it. If you have cheap plastic light switches, for example, you can have them swapped quite easily (and at relatively little expense) for swish, upmarket ones which are not only lovely to look at but also pleasant to touch every time you use them. The same goes for door and window furniture: think, for example, how different your front door would look with a gorgeous, matching set of letterbox, bell and numbers.

They Drive
AMONGST US...
This piece was inspired by a video of a driver doing something earthshatteringly stupid - and the internet is full of this stuff. Though worth a chuckle, they serve as a reminder to avoid such people. My top 5: 5.
The car trailing a pump nozzle and 3m of hose from its filler cap. Like you didn’t hear some sort of bang as it snapped off the pump?
4.
The 4 x 4 driver who exits, via a tight left-hander, a car-wash set on a bank. They floor it, shoot off the road and roll over-and-over down the bank. Pity you wasted your money on that premium wash eh?
3.
Those classic instances of tail-gating over a rising bollard, which is designed to stop such an act and has signs saying so. Still, some drivers think it doesn’t apply to them, until their transport is lifted three feet off the ground.
2.
How difficult can it be to drive into a workshop with an inspection pit? Line the car up and drive slowly in. Alternatively, speed in at a crazy angle and jam the car sideways down the pit.
Image chauffeur driven luxury cars and minibuses Luxury Cars - Gold Service
1.
Top place must go to the video that prompted this piece. Taken by the dashcam of a car waiting to fill-up at a petrol station, it shows a driver using a cigarette lighter to see how much fuel is in the tank, with predictable results. The dashcam driver, seeing the conflagration unfolding before their eyes, drove off before things really got out of hand, but presumably it didn’t turn out well.

Newport Male Voice Choir is looking for new members to join our happy throng. We are therefore holding an informal singing day on Saturday 20 May 2017 so you can come and see if choral singing is for you. We perform a wide range of classic songs, show numbers and popular music. If you enjoy singing do come and join us: you can be sure of a warm welcome. It doesn’t matter if you have not sung in a choir before or can’t read music. The only qualification is the ability to sing in tune and with enthusiasm. There’s no voice test, no audition and no obligation to join. The event will take place from 10am to 3.30 pm at Trinity Church, Wellington Road Newport. We will be very pleased to see you for the day or just for an hour or two. Bring some lunch (coffee and tea will be provided). For more information phone Alan Wright on 01952 813267.

Motoring
Those of you hoping this was BMW’s M7 need to look away now. Although this may be the fastest BMW the German firm has ever made, if you’re after a fire-breathing, full-blooded M car, the M760Li will leave you a little disappointed. You see, it may have that fabled tri-colour badge on its boot, but this isn’t cut from the same cloth as an M2, M3 or M4. BMW says that’s because this is a car for buyers with something of a split personality. One moment they may be keen on a country road assault so they can enjoy the glorious V12, the next they might want to kick back and relax in the massaging seats and just cruise along. Looks and image The 7 Series has long been a luxury choice for the type of buyer who still enjoys driving, though – and the M760Li is the epitome of that. With several driving modes to choose from, sporty drivers are well catered for as throttle response is quickened, gear changes swifter and the whole car feels more taught and agile in bends when its sport setting is active. Flick back to the comfort setting and it’s a different story – mellower, more relaxed, it eases over bumps and floats along beautifully. It’s an impressive dichotomy. The looks of the M760Li won’t be for everyone, though. There are some gaudy chrome touches and in the matt grey it looks, dare we say it, a little common. Inside, however, it’s a wonderful place to spend time. Buyers in the UK will predominantly drive themselves, but for those that do get chauffeured around the back seats are arguably more comfortable than up front. There are multimedia screens to enjoy, cushioned headrests and massaging, reclining seat backs.
Space and practicality
The 7 Series does feel a little smaller in the rear than rivals from Mercedes and Audi, though. Up front the driving position is a little cosseting too, with controls wrapped around you, but it’s easy to get settled and comfortable.
What’s under the bonnet?
BMW made a lot of noise about it being 30 years since they
86
BMW M760LI XDRIVE
installed a V12 engine in their 7 Series at the launch. And since that first unit arrived in 1987 in the 7 Series, the 12-cylinder lump has doubled in power. The 2017 6.6-litre unit now boasts a whopping 601bhp, a staggering 800Nm of torque and is capable of propelling it to 60mph in just 3.6 seconds. That gives it the impressive title of the fastest accelerating BMW ever made – not bad for a model that’s not even a ‘proper’ M car. All that grunt does mean you’ll pay at the pumps; the M760Li will return 22.1mpg and emits 294g/km.
Behind the wheel
The BMW is a true Jekyll and Hyde car with distinct personalities behind the wheel. We tried the M760Li on the track first. Although the long sweeping bends and snooker table smooth surfaces weren’t going to show off the car in anything other than the best light, it was incredibly swift for such a lump. That V12 makes a pleasingly sound and while there may be some body roll, it’s not too intrusive and, for a car of this size, actually rather impressive in the way it’s kept under control. It’s all helped by four-wheel drive that has a rear wheel drive bias when it’s needed. The steering is a little light in the comfort setting, though, especially for track work, but flick it into sport and it’s far better.
Value for money
At £132,310, you’d expect to get some goodies thrown in, and fortunately you do. Lightweight 20-inch alloys, a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and Car Play are included, as is an Advanced Parking System, adaptive LED headlights, a headup display, and massaging seats. There’s even rear-seat entertainment and a panoramic glass sunroof provided too. How very generous. Naturally there’s an extensive options list. Executive lounge seating to make rear passengers even more comfortable, night vision and BMW laser headlights are just a few of those you can tick.
Verdict
For petrol heads, the fact BMW perseveres with a V12 is a revelation. In a world where downsizing is the buzzword, it seems hard to believe that a manufacturer would launch a 6.6-litre petrol drinking lump. Although the market for it will be small, we’re still very glad it has. OK, so this might not be the M7 that many performance BMW fans crave, but it’s as close to it as we’re going to get. It’s great fun to drive, sumptuously luxurious and wonderfully relaxing when you want it to be and all in, a very competent and exciting 7 Series indeed.

Notes from your local Ironbridge Gorge Councillor The Telford & Wrekin Local Plan provides a framework for development in the Borough and the Council has identified a borough wide plan target of 15,555 net new dwellings up to 2031. However, the Planning Inspectorate has suggested that the Council reconsider its Objectively Assessed Housing Needs and has highlighted a number of issues within the Plan identifying “serious soundness concerns”, which at this stage is greatly concerning. As a member of the Telford & Wrekin Planning Committee I spoke in favour of deferment on the Apley Woods application TWC/2015/0843. We have a moral obligation to protect our natural landscapes, the character within our Borough and I felt there were defendable reasons to warrant a further deferment, as the proposal conflicts with the principles of local and national policy. The Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site Management Plan and Conservation Area Management Plan will come before Telford & Wrekin Cabinet in April. These plans aim to safeguard the unique heritage and character of the Gorge and to engage with the living and working community that also significantly define and contribute to the vibrancy of the WHS. I am delighted to confirm that the Council will be improving the condition of the existing carriageway surface on The Wharfage, Tontine Hill and High Street in Ironbridge. Works will commence from Monday 24th April and for more information please do email me on the contact details below.

Diamond Drop In AT ST. ANDREWS CHURCH, SHIFNAL With Dementia week approaching in May, I thought it would be a good time to make people aware of a group that is run by a local charity, Age UK Shrophire, Telford and Wrekin (STW) and works in partnership with St Andrew’s Forget-MeNot group. This group is called Diamond Drop-In at ForgetMe-Not, St Andrew’s Church in Shifnal. This Diamond Drop-In not only supports local people living with dementia, but also their carers. The group meets on the first Tuesday of the month from 2pm-4pm. The group also provides: • A chance to get to know others and share experiences in a friendly relaxed atmosphere • Support and information about other services that are available to support and help you • The opportunity for everyone to get involved in fun and interesting activities. These activities appeal to everyone and include singing, music, games and reminiscence. One member of the group reported ‘The Drop-in centre has been a real boom to me personally as it helps me cope as a carer. My husband gets such a lot out of it too, it makes him smile and we can do fun things together.” If you know someone, locally, who would benefit from this group, please encourage them to contact Age Uk’s Shrewsbury office on: 01743 233123 ext: 232 or 255 and ask for Jenny or Neil.

China
Only 1,000 giant pandas are believed to survive in the wilds of China, 80% of them in the south-west province of Sichuan where, in 1987, a Research and Breeding Centre for Giant Pandas was set up in a northern suburb of Chengdu. From the original six pandas rescued at the start of the programme, nearly 100 have been successfully bred, thus increasing the population without affecting those in the wild. Today this award-winning centre is one of the best places in the world to see giant pandas in a semi-wild environment. Not surprisingly, the centre is a popular attraction for foreign and domestic tourists, including Chinese schoolchildren on their annual outing, but those in the know visit early in the morning to avoid tour groups and watch the pandas waking up, all set for their bamboo breakfast. It’s also a pleasant time to wander through the grounds, before the heat sets in, and enjoy over 100 hectares of greenery landscaped to resemble the bears’ natural habitat, with hills and lake, 400 species of trees and some 10,000 clumps of bamboo and bushes. In this natural environment the pandas are not as pristine and white as their cuddly toy counterparts, but despite their somewhat muddy bottoms you can’t help falling in love with those big dark eyes that seem to look straight into your soul. Wander along the trails and you gaze in wonder as you see pandas eat, sleep or play in large enclosures and, if you’re lucky, you may get within feet of a bear. But most of the time they’re far too busy to take any notice, for there’s bamboo to
PANDAS IN CHENGDU
munch, trees to climb and mates and cubs to socialise with. Besides the giant pandas, you’re almost sure to spot a few members of the red variety, much smaller and often going in pairs, sleeping in the trees, eating, lapping up water or just nosing around. Other rare breeds who found a home in Chengdu include black-necked cranes, white storks and golden monkeys who live alongside song birds, egrets, peacocks and swans. Meanwhile the new-born pandas are cared for in the nursery, so tiny you can’t imagine they’ll ever grow into soft furry giants - but visitors who don’t mind the extra cost can have a peep or even a cuddle. But it is all in a good cause for this is a nonprofit organisation and all funds are reinvested into the project. Besides the adoption scheme, the centre raises extra funds through various activities and the sale of panda memorabilia in order to sustain its twofold ambition: conservation and education. Conservation involves studying the behaviour and specific needs of pandas and encouraging breeding, naturally or, if that fails, by artificial insemination. Increasing numbers, they say, is the key to survival and the time may come when some bears born in captivity could be released into the wild. On the other hand, education means raising awareness about the giant pandas’ plight, not only in the Chengdu Centre but also worldwide by working with a range of partners far beyond the borders. Having settled in Edinburgh in December 2011, Tian Tian and Yang Guang haven’t managed to breed just yet but they are doing well and remain the only giant pandas in the UK.

Take some... Traditional values and service Established in 2003, The Kitchen Depot is a family-owned and run business that remains true to our founding values of honesty, integrity and sheer professionalism. We take immense pride in our reputation for service and commitment to our customers, with more than half of our business coming from customer recommendations to their family and friends.
...add a dash of… Quality and Value
All of our kitchens are manufactured to an exceptionally high German specification, on site, in our own factory and by our own people. That way, we have total control over the product quality, the production timescales AND the manufacturing costs. With no middle-man – you buy direct and we are able to pass these time and cost savings directly onto our customers.
…then a big chunk of…
Ownership and Responsibility
Unusual in this insincere world, admittedly. But we mean it. We are totally committed to providing you with the best kitchen, at the best price, installed with the highest level of service and professionalism. And on the exceptionally rare occasion that something could have been done better – we hold our hands up – and put it right. Fast. No fuss. No hassle. No argument. Just sorted.
...a soupçon of…Harmony At The Kitchen Depot, we know that we are only as good as our people. They ARE The Kitchen Depot brand. That’s why we look after our staff every bit as well as we look after our customers. Because we know that happy workers, pulling together in harmony, make for happy customers.
