OPEN PLAN LIVING
kitchen accessories – for a smart and interesting look.

You may find that conventional furniture doesn’t work as well as expected in an open-plan space in which case search for larger-than-average pieces, bearing in mind that they have to look good from all angles, not just the front. What you need to avoid, especially in a larger room, is placing the seating around the edges, or spacing too far apart. Steer clear of the hospital-waitingroom or furniture-showroom look at all costs. Instead, group your seating so that sofas and chairs are sociable, either facing each other or creating a corner (modular units are good for this).
I f
Who doesn’t love the idea of living in a light, bright and airy open-plan space? Katherine Sorrell explains how to get the most out of it. We’ve all hankered for a large, openplan living space – where family and friends can be relaxed and sociable together, yet do their own thing at the same time. And the key to ensuring that an open-plan room looks good and functions brilliantly is careful planning. Start by thinking about how you’ll use the space – for cooking, informal eating, entertaining, working, relaxing and so on – and divide it into appropriate areas. Just as if they were separate rooms, but without conventional dividing walls. In some cases these separate zones can be created with changes of level, but generally they’re achieved through the considered use of flooring, colour and pattern, lighting and the positioning of furniture. Choosing flooring for a multi-purpose space can be problematic, as kitchens/halls need something splash-proof that can be mopped, while sitting areas ought to feel inviting and comfortable. There are two solutions. Either use different (but complementary) floorings, thus automatically creating visually distinct zones, or lay one practical flooring throughout, giving a sleek and flowing look. Stone or ceramic tiles, engineered or laminate floorboards, rubber and good quality vinyl are all suitable – simply soften with woven or fluffy rugs around your sofas and chairs to create the framework for a separate ‘living’ area. Pale colours will emphasise open, airy spaces, while darker shades are dramatic and can help make large areas feel cosy. One option in an open-plan room is to zone the scheme by using tones of one colour, going from light at one end to darker at the other. If your space is very long and thin, painting the end walls in a deeper shade makes them appear closer, thus improving the proportions, while a neutral scheme throughout can be given matching accents of a brighter colour – say, a rug in the living area, glasses on the dining table and a couple of

you’re starting from scratch with an open-plan design, try to include an island or peninsular unit between the kitchen and the rest of the room. That way, you get a visual break between the two zones and the cook can comfortably chat with family or guests while preparing food. Kitchen manufacturers now produce plenty of products that blend kitchen, dining and living functions, from cabinets that co-ordinate with freestanding storage to media units that incorporate a TV, so it’s no longer hard to design a space that blends easily from one zone to another. One final point: bear in mind that sound carries, and you won’t be able to shut a door to block it out. If you’re eating dinner, watching TV or catching up on emails, you won’t want to be disturbed by the extractor fan howling or the dishwasher gurgling so, if possible, put your washing machine somewhere separate and buy superquiet appliances. GET THE LIGHT RIGHT
Good lighting makes a big difference in any room, and is especially important for open-plan living, helping to zone the space and provide either strong illumination or soft ambience. Food preparation areas need bright lights, which can usually be built into the bottoms of wallmounted cabinets or, if you have an island unit, can take the form of a ceiling-mounted track or a row of pendants. In dining and living areas, meanwhile, you’ll want flexible lighting that can be turned up or down easily. Experts advise installing a range of circuits that can be controlled by separate switches or dimmers but, unless you’re at the building-work stage, this will involve a fair bit of disruption (not to mention the extra expense). Instead, simply introduce flexibility by replacing main light switches with dimmers and plugging in a selection of table or floor lamps at strategic points.

A Rustic Christmas
strings of angels or snowflakes, or even gingerbread stars, all look adorable, and can be used everywhere in the home. Instead of shiny baubles, how about cutting simple shapes from felt and blanket-stitching them around the outside? Or making a wreath using clippings from the garden? Similarly, you can create wonderful decorations using sprigs of evergreens, ivy, pine cones (you could spray them with artificial snow), rose hips, dried seed heads and twigs (try lashing them together into a star shape). Or dry slices of apple and orange and tie them together with gardener’s string, adding cinnamon sticks and star anise. It will look and smell gorgeous. Of course, if you’re short of time, all these and more can be found in the shops, along with all sorts of irresistible decorations such as birch bark candle holders, driftwood Christmas trees and needlefelted and knitted owls, reindeer and robins. When it comes to wrapping presents, choose brown paper and string, or lengths of fabric and cotton ribbon, rather than foil that can’t be recycled. Use cardboard luggage labels and bear in mind that children might enjoy potato printing the plain paper for a little embellishment – white paint looks fantastic against the brown. As for receiving presents, there’s nothing nicer than a row of knitted stockings hanging by the fire, perhaps with some printed hessian sacks – widely available these days – for larger gifts.
The simplest of festive decorations can sometimes be the most appealing, says interiors expert Katherine Sorrell Who doesn’t love a natural look at home? And especially at Christmas, when present-buying, hosting guests, shopping, cooking and generally rushing around can all get a bit too much. Keeping your decorations simple and rustic is not only attractive and on-trend, but it also makes life easier and can be extremely cost-effective. Unpretentious and understated, natural decorations suit every home, large or small, modern or traditional, and make a fabulous, timeless alternative to commercialised glitz and glitter. The centrepiece of this look, ideally, is a real tree, which is best bought from a good local stockist. Choose one that’s as fresh as possible, make a new cut at the bottom, and display in a stand (a wicker basket is perfect) that holds a reservoir of water – it could need one or two litres every day. (Tip: the Nordmann Fir holds its needles really well.) Decorate generously, but don’t overload your tree, and keep to a limited colour scheme (white, red, green and brown are all great), using natural materials (see box). And, if you wish to add a touch of sparkle, twine the tree with small, plain white fairy lights. Feeling inspired? Spend a weekend making decorations with the family. Garlands of popcorn, nuts and paper

Fresh flowers are fabulous at Christmas – a gorgeous reminder of springtime soon to come. Hyacinths are classic (and their scent will fill your home), as are amaryllis and poinsettias. They all look particularly special in white, of course. Wrap pots in hessian tied with string or pop groups of them into a wicker basket; you can decorate the tops of the pots with silver moss. Because this is a look where less is more, laying the festive table is easy. A linen runner or place mats, plain white china, clear glass (recycled and robust or cut crystal for a twinkle, whichever you prefer) and simple decorations such as bowls of pine cones or oranges studded with cloves, and perhaps a vase full of evergreens, twigs and boughs. Cosy, welcoming and unpretentious.
INGREDIENTS FOR A NATURAL CHRISTMAS • Hessian • Twigs, branches and boughs • Linen and cotton ribbon • Brown paper and string
• Greenery and berries from the garden • Moss • Dried, sliced apples and oranges • Cinnamon sticks and star anise • Gingerbread • Felt • Hyacinths, amaryllis and white poinsettias • Candles • Pine cones
Finally, add candles, small and tall, in rows along mantelpieces, in the centre of the dining table, on simple iron candelabra, in advent displays – anywhere their flickering glow will make you feel happy. Alternatively, tea lights look pretty inside old jam jars, which is safer if you have young children around. Pop a mince pie in the oven and heat some mulled wine on the hob, and here it is – a very merry Christmas. ART DECO STYLE buildings from Miami to New York – one of the finest examples being the 102-storey Empire State Building, completed in 1931. In terms of furniture, the Art Deco look was low and upright in design, featuring geometric outlines with rounded corners, and often the shell, fan or sunburst shapes that are key to this style. Two completely new pieces had recently been invented: the coffee table and the cocktail cabinet, the latter something that has become inextricably associated with the style. Functional and space-saving, fitted kitchens became increasingly widespread, while the Art Deco bathroom (still a relatively new room in most homes) featured solid yet elegant shapes and glamorous looks, with plenty of chrome and bevelled-edge mirror.
To decorate walls, botanicals or geometrics were frequent motifs, while upmarket homes might have lacquer or wood panelling, mirror tiles or even trompe l’oeil murals. And Image - Artworks Art Deco bathroom, Original Style, 01392 473000; www.originalstyle.com this was the era of fabulous parquet flooring, perhaps with the addition of a zebra skin or a boldly abstract rug (today’s fashionable chevrons are a descendant). Soft furnishings were, in high-end interiors at least, sumptuous and costly, with silk and velvet (tasselled and fringed, of course) especially desirable. However, as the look filtered down it was cotton, chenille and moquette that gained in popularity, often featuring graphic patterns in bold colours or the monochrome of black, white and grey. Everything was bathed in a new form of artificial light – electricity – and the widespread use of new-fangled electric fittings meant that The Roaring Twenties saw the jazz age in full swing from designers paid increasing attention to their appearance. Decadent Deco
The luxe looks of Art Deco never go out of fashion – and, according to a recent survey by Olympia’s Art & Antiques Fair, it’s the nation’s favourite design style. We take a look at the history of this glamorous, good-looking movement.
Early Art Deco furniture was exclusive and luxurious, made from costly materials such as hardwoods, lacquer, mother of pearl, shark skin, tortoiseshell and leather, and frequently featured extravagant veneering and inlaid decoration. For collectors, then, this period is highly desirable and correspondingly expensive. However, as the style spread around Europe and became hugely popular across the Atlantic, designers gave the look a twist, employing the latest technologies and less expensive materials, such as stainless steel, chrome and Bakelite plastic. In the States it became known as Streamlining, and its curvy lines were the must-have look for a host of new

bridged the old world and the new, it was commercialised to the point of kitsch. House builders employed features such as rounded bay windows, doorways with stepped surrounds and garden gates with sunrise motifs. The vocabulary of brightly coloured zigzags, chevrons, exotic animals and stylised flowers was added to furnishings, accessories and practically any type of homeware possible – and thus what had been a luxurious look available only to the few had become an everyday style that was found in all sorts of ordinary homes.

Restaurant Review
FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE Norwood House Pave Lane, Newport TF10 9LQ
T: 01952 825896
Norwood House is a chic and cosy eatery located in the charming countryside setting of Chetwynd Aston on the outskirts of Newport. Hosted by Anita, the restaurant has recently re-opened after the owners took a short break to concentrate on private functions. Being able to offer exclusivity, and catering for upto 140 guests, Norwood House is an excellent venue for weddings and special occasion celebrations. Having dined at the restaurant in the past I was keen to return as soon as I heard about the relaunch, as the standard of the food has always been excellent and once again I wasn't disappointed. On arrival we ordered drinks to enjoy in the pleasant bar area while we perused the menu. I was happy to see that the ever popular Champagne Menu is back, offering incredible value without compromising on choice or quality; it's available from Thursday to Saturday from 6pm till 9pm and for just ÂŁ20 per person includes 2 courses and a glass of bubbles or for ÂŁ24.95 you can upgrade to three courses. To start my husband ordered the Thai crab cake and I went for the garlic mushrooms, after enjoying a few sips of our very nice chilled champagne our food arrived hot and attractively presented. The crab cake had a golden crispy crumb coating and inside was light and fluffy crab and potato filling, Aaron commented that the flavour of the crab cake was mildly spicy with a delicious savoury Thai flavour, it was accompanied by a flavoursome tomato basil jam and fresh mixed salad leaves. My garlic mushroom starter was served in a rather cute miniature frying pan, it consisted of a medley of mushrooms cooked in a rich and creamy garlic sauce, topped with a crunchy golden pesto crumble, it was very
16
tasty and moorish and made for a great start to the meal, the crumble topping added a crunchy texture which worked well with the richness of the mushrooms. For our main courses we ordered the 8oz fillet steak with peppercorn sauce and the lamb fillet. The fillet steak was cooked exactly to Aaron's preference and was very tender, it came served with a generous portion of perfectly crisp yet fluffy hand cut chips and a side of fresh seasonal veg. My lamb fillet dish consisted of several generous
FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT slices of melt in the mouth lamb fillet, cooked until still slightly pink served on a bed of fondant potatoes, with celeriac purée and a red wine jus, we were both very satisfied with our choices of main course and both thoroughly enjoyed every bite. The dessert menu has a mouthwatering array of tempting treats, so needless to say we both went for the full 3 course offer! Aaron ordered the Tutti Fruiti Cheesecake and I opted for the intriguing Textures of Pear. The Cheescake was a really fun and vibrant dish, the cheesecake tasted just like lemon sherbet and was served with a scoop of bright blue bubble gum ice cream! The overall effect was very reminiscent of an old-fashioned sweetie shop, it was fun and tasty and it raised a smile too! My textures of pear dessert arrived beautifully presented and as the name might suggest it did indeed cover a plethora of pear textures, including poached pear, pear parisien, pear purée and pear glacé. The poached pear was perfectly soft and refreshing in contrast with the pear glacé which gave an intense hit of sweetness and a crunchy texture, this was a cleverly thought out and well presented dish which I thoroughly enjoyed, it was a lovely light ending to the meal. During our visit I was delighted to discover that the restaurant is also open for Sunday lunch between 12 noon and 4pm, the Sunday lunch menu starts from £14.50 for two courses and £17.95 for four courses including coffee and a home-made mint truffle, which is great value for a quality meal. The Sunday lunch menu has something to please everyone, with traditional roasts, fish and vegetarian options available. Norwood House really is a hidden gem and a must visit destination for foodies, the cuisine is top quality, the atmosphere is cosy and intimate and with the fabulous champagne menu it offers incredible value too. For a fine dining experience without the fine dining price tag you really must put Norwood House on your to do list this autumn!

European Christmas Market
COMING TO TELFORD
Telford & Wrekin Council is delighted to announce the borough will be holding a European Market this year in the lead up to Christmas. Beginning on 1 December, the market will run daily right up until 23 December offering a wide range of food, drinks, crafts and more. Anyone who has visited similar style markets before will be pleased to hear that there will be a bar as well as the obligatory sausages for that real authentic European market feel. There will be 32 traditional chalets featuring 70 per cent European and 30 per cent local market stalls. In addition, there will also be a little funfair to entertain the younger crowd as well as performances from local choirs and acoustic bands for that real Christmas atmosphere. Councillor Shaun Davies, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “We have been discussing the possibility of a Christmas market for a long time now, and I know many local residents have raised the idea since the opening of Southwater two years ago. “Since it was announced on social media yesterday the interest in the market has been phenomenal, and despite it only being September I’m delighted at the excitement and buzz that is already building online.
“The market will not only be showcasing food, drink and products from authentic European stallholders, but will also give a number of local businesses the opportunity to have a stall of their own at an event which is likely to attract thousands of visitors “We’ve been putting Telford and Wrekin on the map with our astonishing growth over recent years and holding this market shows our continuing intention to make the borough a destination of choice.” Telford & Wrekin Council is working with Retail Alternatives to bring Telford European Christmas Market to the borough, also supported by Telford Shopping Centre. To keep up to date with the latest news visit the event page on Facebook Telford European Christmas Market.

Recipe
MINCEMEAT & APPLE MINI STRUDELS
These delicious sweet and buttery mini fruity strudels make great festive puds over Christmas. You can prepare them a few hours in advance, cover and chill in the fridge and bake just before serving.
Ready in 35 minutes Makes 8 INGREDIENTS: • 8 tbsp luxury mincemeat
1.
• 1 small cooking apple, peeled and coarsely grated • 8 sheets filo pastry, each measuring 18x31cm • 50g unsalted butter, melted • Filo pastry stars, to decorate (see Tip) • Icing sugar, to dust • Whipped cream or brandy butter, to serve
Preheat the oven to 200C, Fan 180C, Gas Mark 6. Mix together the mincemeat and grated apple. Take one sheet of filo pastry and brush with some of the melted butter.
2. Place a spoonful of the mincemeat mixture along one short end of the sheet of buttered pastry. Fold in a little of the pastry along each long side then roll up to enclose the filling. Place seam side down on a large greased baking tray. 3. Repeat with the rest of the pastry sheets and mincemeat mixture to make 8 mini strudels in total. Brush with any remaining melted butter. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 10-15 minutes until the pastry is crisp and golden. Cool for 5 minutes then halve and serve with filo pastry stars and dust liberally with icing sugar. Serve with whipped cream or brandy butter.
TIP To make the stars, fold a spare sheet of filo pastry into three. Stamp out tiny stars using a small star-shaped cookie cutter and brush with a little melted butter. Bake as above but for only 4-5 minutes until crisp and golden.

with Dawn Clarke
How to Choose the Ideal Buy-to-let Property It’s the million-dollar question - how do you choose the perfect buy-to-let property in Shropshire? Dawn Clarke, director of property management and lettings at Nock Deighton, has more than 20 years’ experience in the lettings industry, and has some useful tips for would-be landlords. “It may be something of a cliche, but it’s still very much a case of ‘location location location’ when considering a property to let,” Dawn says. “Ideally the property needs to be local to you, so it’s easy to visit and keep an eye on, and it needs to be in an area which will appeal to the kind of tenants you want. “For instance, if you are looking for a professional couple, buy a property close to a railway station and with good transport links, and if you would prefer a
family as tenants, choose a house in the catchment area of a good school.
way of starting out, because the chances are you will then attract the kind of tenants you want too.
“Speak to a local letting agent about the demand in different areas - they will know which parts of Shropshire are more suitable than others.
“Make sure you look at the numbers. Think about the annual rental income compared with your mortgage repayments, and don’t forget to factor in service and maintenance charges.
“The amenities in your property’s immediate area are a big selling point for potential tenants - so being in walking distance of shops, pubs and restaurants will be a big plus point. “It’s important to think longterm and consider the resale value of the property. Remember it’s an investment, not your own home, so buying a property which will be desirable to future buyers should you decide to sell is definitely worth doing. “Having said that, buying the sort of home that you would like to live in yourself is not a bad
The Watch Oak,
“At the end of the day, the finances have to add up to it being a sensible investment, otherwise it won’t be worth your while. “There are plenty of great properties out there which will be ideal buy-to-let investments, and with the right research and advice, there is no reason why you shouldn’t become a happy and successful landlord for years to come.” For more information and advice about property management, call Dawn and her team on 01952 290163.

How Much Does it Really Cost
TO BUY A HOME?
Land registry This will confirm who holds the legal title to the land, and whether there are any charges on the property, such as a mortgage. Drainage and Water The water company will confirm whether the property is connected to the mains water supply, drainage and surface water drainage. This search also reveals whether any public drains are located on the land. Environmental An environmental search utilises historical information about how the land on which the property was built, and the land nearby, was used in the past – industrial or commercial uses, for example – and indicates whether contamination might be an issue. Any risk of flooding is also highlighted using data from the Environment Agency.
The true cost of buying a home isn’t always obvious when you start looking, and many people are unaware just how much the additional fees can mount up. In fact, when consumer group Which? carried out a national property survey, over 25% of buyers and sellers said that moving had cost them more than expected. So apart from your mortgage, what extra fees and expenses might you face when buying a new home?
Homebuyer Surveys
Stamp Duty Stamp Duty affects the purchasers of residential freehold or leasehold properties sold forover £125,000, with rates currently standing at: • £125,001 to £250,000: 2% • £250,001 to £925,000: 5% • £925,001 to £1.5 million: 10% • Over £1.5 million: 12% As a buyer, you must send a Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) return along with your payment within 30 days of completion.
Removals
Mortgage lenders will carry out a basic valuation survey to confirm how much the property is worth. The price of this can start from around £150, but varies according to its value.
Using a removals firm can seem like a large expense if you don’t have a lot of possessions, and many people choose to hire a van instead. Removals firms generally charge from £300 for a small move, but may charge more for weekend work.
Two other types of survey are also available - a Homebuyer Report and a full structural survey.
Home Insurance
The cost of these surveys can vary depending on your location and the size of the property, but expect to pay from around £250 for a Homebuyer Report and upwards of £600 for a structural survey.
Conveyancing and Solicitor’s Fees Solicitors tend to charge a fixed fee for their time, and then add on the costs of local authority and land/water searches separately, along with other searches that you might want to carry out.
Buildings insurance is an important aspect of buying a property, and will be a requirement by your lender if you’ve taken out a mortgage. Contents insurance also protects your belongings in the event of fire, flood, or other disaster. It’s a good idea to factor in these extra costs before you start looking for a property. You’ll be more confident that your budget will stretch far enough, and won’t have to suffer any nasty surprises later on. www.which.co.uk/money/mortgages-and-property/guides/buying-ahouse/the-cost-of-buying-a-house/
More than 60 different searches are available, but many are specialised and only relevant to a small number of properties. These are the searches most commonly used by homebuyers:
www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/estimate-your-overallbuying-and-moving-costs
Local Authority Local authority searches include the Local Land Charges Register. Your solicitor will also find out about any issues such as new roads that are being planned near the property, any parking restrictions or tree preservation orders, for example.

PARTY PICK-ME-UPS
Feeling a bit partied out and ready to just curl up with Netflix and a mug of hot chocolate? Our beauty picks this month will soon have you back on your feet and ready to hit the town. First up,
Urban Veda’s Radiance Body Ritual collection.
Just opening the drawstring bag is a treat. The products all smell
amazing – they’re packed with nourishing, fragrant ingredients, including orange oil, turmeric and papaya, so it’s like breathing in the scent of holidays. With a body scrub, body wash and body lotion, you just need to light a candle to create a home spa experience. And they really do leave your skin and spirits feeling rejuvenated. £34.99, www.urbanveda.co.uk.
Green People’s Self-Tan, £21, is one of the best fake tans on the market. It’s easy Looking to get some of that summer glow back?
to apply, and develops into a natural looking tan within three hours. As an added bonus, it doesn’t have that typical fake tan smell, and it contains rosehip oil to moisturise as it tans. As with any fake tan, you’ll want to leave at least 24 hours between hair removal and application. It’s also a good idea to exfoliate with a good body scrub beforehand. Massage in a light body lotion, and give it time to sink in. Then work some extra moisturiser into your knees, elbows and other ‘knobbly’ bits, to help avoid darker patches. See www.greenpeople. co.uk.
If your hair is looking a bit frazzled and fed up with all that styling, try treating it to an
Ouai Treatment Masque. It takes just 10
minutes for the treatment to soothe and restore your weary locks, leaving them smoother and shinier after just one use. A pack of eight sachets will set you back £25, so it’s not cheap, but worth having in your beauty arsenal for big nights out. See www.spacenk.com. I don’t know whether the eyes truly are the windows to the soul, but they’re certainly a tattle tale when it comes to late nights. Try
Anatomicals Puffy the Eye Bag Slayer Wake Up Under Eye Patches. Three pairs cost around £6 from Amazon or www. glossybox.co.uk. They feel incredibly soothing, and do seem to
reduce swelling in just half an hour. Cover up any remaining dark circles with
Dry Eye Concealer, £11.95, from www.skinshop.co.uk.
While the coverage isn’t quite as flawless as some concealers, it makes up for it by helping to moisturise and repair skin. It also goes on smoothly and doesn’t draw attention to fine lines, puffy eyes or dry skin. You can also use the Dry Eye Concealer to calm and cover small patches of eczema and other areas of irritation. Sometimes a spritz of perfume is all you need to perk yourself up before pulling on your heels.
Jo Malone are known for their Basil and
quirky fragrance combinations, and their latest cologne,
Neroli, is no different. It’s got that lovely freshness of neroli, with a herby twist. Playful and warm, the fragrance just seems to improve as the night goes on. Expect plenty of compliments. £43 for 30ml, www.jomalone.co.uk.

THE GIFT OF A GOOD BOOK Struggling to find the perfect book to give as a gift? Or wondering what to add to your own wish list? Maybe we can help…
The Hidden People – Alison Littlewood
The Girl Who Saved Christmas – Matt Haig
Crime, fantasy and historical fiction are melded together in The Hidden People. Albie Mirralls is every bit the sensible, upstanding gentleman that Victorian society wants him to be. When his cousin, Lizzie, is burnt as a changeling, Albie travels from London to her village to see justice done. But when Albie’s own wife seems so completely changed, he finds himself questioning whether there could be some truth to the rumours about his cousin. The perfect book for curling up with on a winter’s night.
Magic is starting to fade in Victorian England, and Amelia might be the only one who can save the day. (Father Christmas being a bit tied up with reindeers falling from the sky, angry trolls and other mishaps.) While it’s the sequel to the 2015 children’s bestseller A Boy Called Christmas, it stands up perfectly well on its own. An ideal gift for children aged 7 and up, this is a really enjoyable read. So much so that you may well find yourself borrowing it back.
The British Table – Colman Andrews and Christopher Hirsheimer For the foodie in your life, you might want to consider this recently released tome. Featuring around 125 recipes, from the traditional to the modern, there’s plenty to tempt most taste-buds. Recipes range from long-forgotten traditional fare, to regional specialities and contemporary classics. The focus is on warming comfort food. Think Braised Brisket followed by Whisky-Soaked-Raisin and Orange Marmalade.
Little Warrior – Giuseppe Catozzella Inspired by a tragic true story, Little Warrior tells the story of Samia Omar. Growing up in war-torn Somalia, life is hard, and dangerous. But Samia has big dreams – she wants to follow in Mo Farah’s footsteps and compete in the Olympics. As life grows increasingly hard for women, Samia refuses to be cowed into submission. There are few options for Samia but to put her life into the hands of traffickers, in the hope of escaping to a better place. A heartbreaking read that will stay with you long past you’ve finished the last page.

What are we Paying for Exactly? Unfortunately I had to have some glass replaced on one of my cars this week. I won’t go into detail but suffice to say I have a crime number from the local constabulary and they rang me the next day to say they have an “interesting” lead. Here’s hoping. I got chatting to the glass technician about the cars he’s worked on and how well each was put together. Based on a completely unscientific survey of a man working on an average of 50 cars a week, I’ve a very rough countdown of the best and worst built cars. The top two were no surprise. It was those further down that raised an eyebrow. Bentley was number one in his experience, with Mercedes at two. It got interesting from then on as his number three bestbuilt car was Ford. They have really upped their game in the last few years and it shows, with well put together vehicles
and quality materials. Snapping at their heels was Vauxhall, again for the same reason. Now for the lower ranked ones: Sorry, but unlike the four above, who I’m sure will gladly take the praise, I don’t want a letter from the lawyers, so they will remain nameless. But the big surprises were a super-car brand and two German marques that have done the opposite to Ford: penny-pinching leading to a drop in quality. It goes to show that, just because a car has a good (or bad) name, built on past reputation, it doesn’t follow that this will continue. The product will sometimes improve whilst at other times quality can deteriorate, regardless of the price charged. So what are we paying for exactly? The badge on the bonnet, or the quality of the build? By Iain Betson

As we hit the back straight of the twisting kart track in the middle of a shanty town in Brazil, the wail of the concept car’s electric motors reaches a crescendo. It’s banshee-like in pitch and would rival a hover bike from Star Wars in tone – this is noise like no electric car that’s gone before it, and it’s pointing to the future of electric vehicles (EVs) for Nissan.
WE TRY NISSAN'S BONKERS BLADEGLIDER
wide-track rear make for a planted and agile ride. On the tiny test track it whipped between corners with a whiff of tyresmoking oversteer when our exuberant test driver got playful. For us mere mortals the BladeGlider offers a drift mode, similar to that found on the Focus RS, for sideways fun – yet more technology debuting here that is likely to filter down to other Nissans.
We’ve come to Rio de Janeiro to experience this mad Batmobile-like sports car concept, dubbed the BladeGlider.
The BladeGlider did feet softly sprung, though, more hot hatch than sports car over the kerbs. But most importantly it was great fun – and, with the instant torque available from those electric motors, it felt swift too.
With a narrow front track and aerodynamically designed body that widens like an arrow to the rear, the concept car takes design cues from the Delta Wing Le Mans racer of 2012.
It’s not supercar fast, but will push you back into the sports seats and throw you around enough to induce a whiff of travel sickness. There’s currently no word on range, though – which we’d guess means it’s currently pretty poor.
Although that car’s track time was short lived, the lessons Nissan learned are brought back to life in this mad sports car concept that’s part Robin Reliant, part McLaren F1, part Caterham.
Unfortunately, the chances of being able to order a BladeGlider from your local dealer any time soon is highly unlikely. This is just one of two produced and they’re likely to be the last. Well, in this form at least.
With two 174bhp electric motors, independently powering each rear wheel, the BladeGlider is good for nearly 120mph and 60mph in under five seconds.
So you might be wondering what the point is? Well, Nissan says that’s simple, really: they want to make people realise electrification doesn’t mean dull, and a sports car concept as bonkers as this proves otherwise.
It’s been built in conjunction with F1 experts Williams Advanced Engineering and features an unusual three-seater layout where both passengers sit behind and either side of the driver. Unfortunately, we weren’t allowed a drive of the multimillion pound concept car; however, we did get to experience it from the passenger seat.
Nissan is long overdue a sister car to the Leaf, the world’s bestselling EV, and many will be hoping the lessons Nissan has learned here will lead to a thrilling follow-up. Fortunately, after a very short passenger ride, all the signs are pointing in the right direction for a smash hit.
Even from here it’s clear the BladeGlider offers a completely unique driving experience. Those two front wheels and the

RENAULT CLIO DCI 110 DYNAMIQUE S NAV The Knowledge Model: Renault Clio dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav Price: £17,755 Engine: Four cylinder, 1.5 dCi 110 Power: 108bhp 0-60mph: 11.19secs Max speed: 121mph Economy: 80.7mpg Emissions: 90g/km
Renault’s Clio has previously been seen as the teenager that refused to grow up. However, with the model celebrating its 25th birthday this year and the French carmaker introducing a host of new styling and design cues, could this be the most mature Clio yet?
level trim, meaning that drivers looking to spend less are left with the option of one of the pre-existing powertrains.
We head to Bordeaux to test out the Clio dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav and find out.
Unfortunately for the Clio, the B-segment isn’t a sparse market. It is packed with affordable rival superminis including the DS3, Citroen C4 Cactus and Ford’s Fiesta. Drivers wanting a more premium experience can opt for the Audi A1, and try as it might, Renault’s updated model proves no match for this German hatch.
What is it? This is Renault’s facelifted fourth-generation Clio. Originally launched back in 2012, the model has been upgraded both aesthetically and mechanically. The latter comes in the form of a new diesel powertrain – the 1.5-litre dCi 110 diesel, previously seen in Nissan’s Qashqai – and the option of a manual transmission coupled with the pre-existing TCe 120 petrol engine. Renault has poured a lot of resources into the styling of the new Clio, which will lead the way for the rest of its range to be updated. A new grille, re-profiled bumpers and a cleverly designed LED light signature feature on the exterior of the car, while C-shaped daytime running lights can also be specified on certain models.
The basic spec Clio starts from £10,495, meaning the range includes both affordable and high-end (for the B-segment) options.
Any rivals?
What’s it like to drive? The Clio has been lengthened and widened, which alongside a sportier appearance and increased cabin space, delivers better handling. New polyurethane suspension bump stops and a quicker steering rack give the car improved agility and body control, but not enough to make the drive markedly different to its predecessor. The 108bhp engine is powerful enough to allow the small car to dart around, and a spread of torque across the revs means it can accelerate with ease in any gear.
While the cabin may appear disarmingly similar to prefacelift Clios, a closer look reveals that quality has improved significantly, with new upholstery, matt chrome trim and softtouch materials – no more scratchy plastics to be found here.
The stop/start feature, which comes as standard on a number of the Clio grades, is easy to get along with and doesn’t cut out at unfortunate moments - as it does in some of the Clio’s B-segment competitors.
With the option of 30 different colour combinations, five roof decals, and four exterior customisation packs, it’s little wonder that the model has been dubbed ‘the most stylish Clio yet’.
A driver-activated Ecomode, which is standard on the Dynamique Nav model and above, can reportedly improve fuel economy by up to 12%.
What’s under the bonnet?
Verdict
The pokey dCi 110 diesel powerplant is linked to a six-speed manual gearbox, which puts 108bhp through its front wheels. Reaching 60mph from a standstill takes 11.19 seconds, while the model tops out at 121mph. The diesel engine produces the typical grunting noise, which is particularly noticeable when the car is at idle or moving slowly, but fades to an indistinct hum at 3,000 revs. The dCi 110 returns an impressive 80.7mpg, while emitting just 90g/km CO2.
What’s the spec like?
Renault claims to have developed the B-segment hatch into something much more versatile and mature than its predecessor. However, with the new diesel powertrain only available in the top-spec model, we can’t help but feel that the carmaker is shoehorning itself into the more upmarket end of the segment. This facelift does well to refresh the product and keep it relevant amongst constantly improving competitors.
Spec on the £17,755 dCi 110 Dynamique S Nav is extensive, with an updated sound and infotainment system with Bose speakers and the new R-link connectivity system featuring as standard.
But with 13 million units sold worldwide since it was launched in 1991, and 12,589 sold in the UK alone between January and June this year, we very much doubt the Clio will be going out of fashion any time soon.
However, the new diesel engine is only available in this top-

Alcohol Awareness Week Alcohol causes around 10% of the deaths and diseases in the UK, costing the NHS around £3.5 billion a year (and taxpayers, £120 each). It’s linked to 60 serious conditions including dementia, depression, diabetes, and bowel, breast and liver cancer. Yet it’s readily and cheaply available, and over 9 million people in England drink more than the recommended daily limits. This year, the focus of Alcohol Awareness Week (14th to 20th November) is ‘Knowing the Risks.’ So exactly what are the risks - and how much is too much?
The Health Risks
Cancer: Alcohol is the most preventable cause of cancer after smoking and is a direct cause of many throat, mouth, oesophagus, bowel, liver and breast cancers. Just one daily alcoholic drink can increase your risk; each daily drink increases breast cancer risk by 7%-12%. Alcohol also increases absorption of carcinogenic chemicals from tobacco into the mouth and throat. Brain function and mental health: In the last decade, hospital admissions due to alcohol-related mental and behavioural disorders have more than doubled. We all know the immediate effects of binge drinking; less wellknown is that long-term misuse can cause Alcohol-Related Brain Damage (ARBD) or Alcohol-Related Brain Injury (ARBI). Features of ARBD are changes to the brain’s shape, size and structure; personality and mood changes; and problems with memory, reasoning and learning. Heavy drinking can also lead to alcohol-related dementia, Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (caused by alcohol-related thiamine deficiency) and earlyonset dementia. Many experts also believe it contributes to Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia. Liver damage: Deaths from liver disease have risen by 20% in the last decade. The liver processes alcohol, but too much can cause cirrhosis (liver scarring), hepatitis (liver inflammation) and fatty liver disease. Heart and Circulatory System: Just one drink a day raises blood pressure and increases the risk of hypertension (permanently elevated blood pressure), stroke and heart attack. Diabetes: Alcohol misuse can lead to chronic pancreatitis, which impairs insulin production. Around a third of sufferers develop diabetes. Also, alcohol’s high calorie content and appetitestimulating properties can cause weight gain, which increases the risk of insulin resistance and diabetes. Problems in Pregnancy & Childbirth: Drinking in pregnancy can cause miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth. Drinking heavily
KNOWING THE RISKS
can cause foetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), meaning your baby could suffer from stunted growth, facial abnormalities, epilepsy, hearing and ear problems, hormonal disorders, liver damage, kidney and heart defects, a weak immune system and learning and behavioural problems. Even moderate drinking or occasional binges may still cause lesser forms of FAS.
Accident and Injury: Even small amounts of alcohol impair coordination, reaction times and decision-making, making driving and machinery operation far riskier. While the legal drinking limit for drivers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland is still 35mg of alcohol per 100 ml of breath, Scotland has now reduced it to just 22mg . Reduced Fertility: Regular and/or heavy drinking can reduce male fertility by causing impotence, lowering testosterone levels and libido, and reducing sperm quality and quantity - while even light drinking can reduce female fertility. Impaired Development: Alcohol can affect the normal development of the brain, liver, bones and hormones in adolescents, and also affects their mental health. The Chief Medical Officer advises that if 15-17 year olds drink alcohol, it should be rarely (never more than once a week) and always under parental supervision, while under 15s shouldn’t drink at all.
How Much is Too Much?
“There is no ‘safe’ level of alcohol consumption when seeking to reduce the risks of alcohol-related cancers,” says Alcohol Concern. “The more alcohol consumed, the greater the risk.” In light of recent research, the government now agrees there is no ‘safe’ drinking level, too, and renamed their new, lower recommendation a ‘low risk’ rather than safe’ limit. This ‘low risk’ limit is a maximum of 14 units a week for men and women, spread over at least three days. A unit of alcohol is around half a pint of normal-strength lager or a single measure (25ml) of spirits. A small (125ml) glass of average-strength wine contains around 1.5 units. Remember, too, that our alcohol-processing ability is affected by several factors. People process alcohol less efficiently: • As they age – some experts recommend lower daily limits for over-55s (1 unit for women and 1.5 units for men). • .If they’re women: women tend to weigh less, have a higher fat to water ratio and have lower levels of alcohol dehydrogenase, an enzyme that breaks down alcohol in the liver. • Depending on genetic make-up: the efficiency of the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme is partly determined by genetics. • If they suffer from certain existing illnesses or take medications that may interact with alcohol or slow down its processing.

The Flair for Care! Clarriots Care, one of the UK’s leading homecare providers, have recently opened a new branch in Shropshire, ready to assist those who need care and support across the region.
Back in 2008, aspiring entrepreneur James Carratt started a home care business in a converted barn on a farm in Lincolnshire. His motivation? Seeing his own James & Paula grandparents struggle to access the good Carratt quality care they deserved. Recognising that not all elderly people want to end up in a care home, James wanted to deliver a high quality care service to individuals in the comfort of their own home. Clarriots Care was formed with five members of staff who all shared a passion to deliver the very best care services to their local community. Over the next couple of years Clarriots Care went from strength to strength and by the end of 2010 they were employing over 25 staff with a customer satisfaction score of 97%. As the hard work continued and investments were made into new technologies and improved systems, the momentum continued to gather pace.
Your Home, Your Care! Care tailored to your every need…
Clarriots Care provides care and companionship for those who need support but wish to stay in the comfort of their own home rather than move into a residential or nursing home. Sourcing care can be difficult and stressful, di whether you're looking for yourself or for a loved one. With free advice and guidance, we'll work hand in hand with you to ensure you have someone you trust delivering your care needs.
48
Another two years later, James’ company, Clarriots Care, was now employing over 65 staff, offering 18 different types of care services and delivering over 10,000 home visits per month with a 98% customer satisfaction rating. As of 2016, Clarriots Care is one of the market leading UK home care providers running it’s national operations from a head office in Lincolnshire. James is still in the office everyday continuing to play a key role in the company and maintains his values and priorities remain the same as they always have, “to provide local communities with a high quality care service, promoting independence and giving people a choice to live how they choose from the comfort of their own homes.” Remember a residential care home isn’t your only option – wouldn’t you rather be at home, surrounded by a lifetime of memories and possessions? So if you or a loved one are looking for a home care provider with a reputation for excellence, give their friendly team a call on 0333 200 5820 or visit their website www. clarriotshomecare.co.uk/shropshiretelford/ and book a free care assessment today.

Six Tips
FOR SURVIVING CHRISTMAS who rushes around to prepare everything while everyone else relaxes, is one perpetuated by many Christmas adverts, which portray it as comical and the norm. Don’t let it be. Ensure everyone helps, whether it’s by laying the table, topping up drinks or preparing vegetables.
4. Be Shrewd with Food
Keep a few quick-to-prepare items in stock to feed unexpected visitors, but don’t buy huge quantities of food. You can always top up, if necessary, after Christmas Day; the shops will be open.
Christmas is just around the corner, and for many of us, it’s a special time to get together with our loved ones that brightens up the darkest time of the year. Unfortunately, ‘the season to be jolly’ is often fraught with pressure to produce the perfect celebration, family tensions and the temptation of too much food and alcohol. So how can you survive Christmas?
1. Be Prepared
Start adding a few Christmas items to each shopping list now, saving you the stress of that massive shopping expedition when shops are busiest. Only the freshest of items need to be purchased just before the big day. Bake, prepare and freeze as much as possible in advance and get others to help you, so that everyone has more time to relax together on the day.
2. Go Easy on the Alcohol
Alcohol is a calorie-heavy appetite stimulant increasingly linked to serious health conditions. It also lowers our inhibitions and affects our judgment, so beware: Christmas Day isn’t the best time to voice long-standing gripes. If you can’t resist a tipple, consider the festive occasions coming up and decide on your limits for each one, ensuring you don’t exceed the recommended weekly maximum of 14 units (now applicable to men and women). Never drink on an empty stomach and aim to have a soft drink (preferably water) for each alcoholic drink to help your body cope with alcohol’s toxins and its dehydrating effects, which cause hangover symptoms. Alcohol absorption depends on speed of intake and your size, age, weight, metabolism and what else you’ve consumed, so no set amount guarantees you’re under the legal drink-drive limit (and Scotland’s limit is considerably lower than the rest of the UK’s). Any amount of alcohol affects your judgement and reactions.
3. Remember: Christmas Is About Everyone
If possible, try to resolve family conflicts before the big day (or persuade people to agree a temporary truce). If you’re chief organiser, consider what everyone (including yourself) wants most from their Christmas, but remind them that everyone’s vision will be different. Compromises will be required. Try to find one or two things everyone can enjoy together, but let people have their own space too. Unfortunately, the sexist stereotype of the exhausted woman

Food poisoning isn’t festive, so ensure all cooks wash and dry their hands. Germs love damp. Frozen foods should be properly defrosted and either cooked thoroughly, or refrigerated, immediately (particularly large poultry or joints of meat). Keep raw foods separate from cooked, and chilled items in the fridge right up until they’re required. Remember to leave enough room in the fridge for cold air to circulate. Chill leftovers rapidly and eat them within two days (reheating thoroughly when necessary). Don’t leave buffet foods out for more than 4 hours. Healthy festive food swaps: • Remove the skin and avoid butter basting your turkey (removing around a third of its calories and half its fat). Skim off fat from meat juices before adding them to the gravy. • Choose low-salt gravy mixes and keep the saltshaker off the table. •Swap: ¾¾ ¾¾ ¾¾ ¾¾ ¾¾
sausage meat for vegetarian sausage mix. goose fat for healthy oils traditional mince pies for lattice, filo or open-top versions brandy butter or cream for low-fat custard or crème fraiche breaded or battered snacks for homemade, marinated savouries ¾¾ high-fat dips for homemade ones with yogurt or crème fraiche ¾¾ crisps, salted nuts and chocolate for plain popcorn, rice cakes, pretzels, unsalted nuts and homemade chocolatecovered fruit (preferably using dark chocolate)
5. Stay Festive Fit
Include some normal meals, at normal times, to avoid stomach problems (and weight gain) caused by too much rich food, sugar and salt. An alarming amount of people are admitted to hospital over the festive season because of the sheer quantity or unhealthy nature of what they’ve eaten. Keep portion size sensible and stop eating just as you start to feel full. It takes time for your stomach to tell your brain it’s full. Ensure you get a good night’s sleep whenever possible, and keep moving; a walk will burn calories and provide the daylight and fresh air necessary to keep you feeling good, physically and mentally.
6. Finally... Keep It in Proportion
Christmas Day is only one day; most festivities are centred on just one week out of 52. If the turkey’s burnt, try to laugh about it; it’s not what matters most. Keep celebrations simple, focusing on what makes you and your nearest and dearest happy, and ignoring traditions that none of you enjoy. It’s your Christmas. Relax and enjoy it!

What Benefits and Concessions
ARE YOU ENTITLED TO IN LATER LIFE?
As you grow older, you become entitled to certain age-related public benefits and concessions that can help with day-to-day living. The most obvious is the state retirement pension, but what are the other less well-known top-ups and concessions that might be available? Although pension credit is a well-established benefit, not everyone realises they are eligible to claim it, so it’s worth checking whether you’re missing out on this valuable supplement to your state pension.
Additionally, there may be local authority concessions available in the area where you live - for adult education or fitness classes, for example. Here are some of the benefits that you might be missing out on, plus a brief guide as to the current eligibility criteria.
Pension credit There are two elements to pension credit – Guarantee Credit which guarantees a minimum income of £155.60 if you’re single, and £237.55 for couples. The second element, Savings Credit, is for people who have saved a small amount towards their retirement. Single people and couples could receive up to £13.07 and £14.75 of Savings Credit per week respectively. You may be entitled to one or both elements if you’ve reached state pension age, and are on a low income.
Attendance Allowance Attendance Allowance is a benefit available to people aged 65 or older, who have care needs at home. You don’t have to receive professional care to be eligible for this benefit, and it’s often the case that a care-provider is a spouse or family member. There are two different rates available, depending on the level of care needed: • Lower rate: £55.10 per week • Higher rate: £82.30 per week People who claim the lower rate often need help with washing and dressing, and the higher rate reflects greater care needs during the day and night.
Carer’s Allowance If you care for someone for 35 hours a week or more, and they are in receipt of certain benefits, you could get Carer’s Allowance at a weekly rate of £62.10. If you’re eligible, you will also automatically receive National Insurance credits. It’s worth noting that Carer’s Allowance can affect other benefits that you and the person you are caring for receive, so you should factor in the possibility that these may reduce or be taken away.
52
Winter fuel allowance You can receive between £100 and £300 from the government to help with your winter heating bills. To qualify for the winter payment this year, you need to have been born before 5th May 1953. Once you’ve claimed, you should receive the payment automatically between November and December in future years.
TV licence You can apply for a free TV licence if you are aged 75 and over. The government also offers concessions to older people in residential care, and the cost for a licence in these circumstances is £7.50.
Public transport There are various concessions available for older people using public transport. Both men and women are entitled to a bus pass at the female state pension age, giving free off-peak travel on local buses.
Prescriptions Those aged over 60 are also entitled to free prescriptions and NHS sight tests. You will need to complete the back of your prescription and let the pharmacist know that you’re eligible – you may also need to provide proof of age in this respect. The government website (www.gov.uk) is a good resource for finding out more about these benefits, and you may be able to make a claim for them online.

Severn Hospice A local charity is calling on businesses across Shropshire to sign up to its Store Wars and help to raise funds to care for families throughout the region living with incurable illnesses. Severn Hospice Store Wars is set to return this November 19th. Each business that gets involved will be allocated a Severn Hospice shop to take over for the day and will be challenged to see which shop generates the most sales to raise as much money as possible for the hospice. Why Voluntary Registration Since April 1986 it has been compulsory to register land ownership in Telford & Wrekin with the Land Registry however the trigger to do so only occurs if something significant happens to that property, for example; a sale, remortgage, inheritance or transfer of equity. If therefore you have been in your house for a number of years (prior to April 1986) and there has been no change in ownership since, your property is likely to be unregistered land. It is worth considering whether to make a voluntary first registration application and there are a number of reasons why you should do so: CONVENIENCE & SECURITY – all records of registered land are kept electronically at Land Registry and unlike unregistered deeds cannot, therefore, be lost, damaged, destroyed or stolen. EVIDENCE OF OWNERSHIP – A registered title provides an upto-date record of who owns the land or property and includes details of rights which benefit the property and obligations or rights the property is subject to. FRAUD PREVENTION – registered land is less susceptible to
IS WORTH CONSIDERING…
property fraud. If your land is registered then Land Registry are able to notify you should any third party make a claim on your land. GUARANTEE – a registered title is guaranteed by the state giving greater security of title. NO STORAGE FEES – electronic storage of registered titles negates the need to keep the title deeds lodged with a bank or solicitors office for safe keeping. PLAN – a registered title is accompanied by a title plan which is based on the latest Ordnance Survey Map. The plan will show the general extent of the land in the title and therefore reduces the potential for boundary disputes between neighbours. Unregistered title plans are often inaccurate. PROTECTION - registration provides greater protection against the possibility of losing title by adverse possession or ‘squatters rights’ and it can assist in avoiding arguments over boundary issues. Sarah Clinton is a specialist property lawyer at Parry Carver Solicitors in Wellington. If you would like to discuss the possibility of voluntary first registration, please call Sarah on 01952 641291 or email SarahClinton@parrycarver.co.uk

Different Types of Debt
AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM
The temptation to borrow money is all around us. Despite the credit crunch, we still live in a consumerist society where credit card companies extend your limit unprompted, and payday lenders target those least able to pay extortionate interest rates.
The fact that many people need to borrow simply to pay their bills and meet the ever-increasing cost of living means it can become draining and stressful just to stay afloat. When you owe money to numerous companies, it can be difficult to know how best to deal with your debts - the pressure becomes overwhelming when you’re simply trying to pay them off. To help you get more control and understand the ramifications of failing to repay, here’s a little more detail about the various forms of secured and unsecured borrowing.
Secured loans This type of loan is secured on an asset, such as the mortgage on your home. If you fall behind on these repayments your home could be repossessed, so this is the number one priority debt above all others. Repossession is a worst case scenario, however, and most lenders will initially be open to negotiation. They won’t want to lose you as a customer, but you do need to be proactive about communicating with them, and demonstrate that you take the situation seriously. There are many debt charities in the UK that will help you work out a budget if you need guidance in this area, and some may even contact the lender on your behalf. It’s important to let your lender know an amount you can afford to repay, and provide them with a copy of your budget to back it up.
Unsecured loans Unsecured lending includes credit card borrowing, payday loans, store cards, personal loans and catalogue debt, and this is not secured on an asset. Credit cards and store cards The UK’s total credit card debt has risen to £65.5 billion in 2016, according to the Money Charity, equating to £2,426 per household. Taking this figure as an example, and assuming your credit card has an average interest rate applied, it would take 25 years and 6 months to repay it in full if you only paid the minimum amount each month. Making the minimum repayment for too long causes a rapid decline into unmanageable debt, particularly if you also have other borrowing to contend with. Personal loans
Payday loans Payday loans are targeted at those who need small amounts to carry them to the end of the month, and are often used to pay bills and meet other liabilities. The danger of these types of loan lies in the extremely high rates of interest applied. If you know that you’ll be able to pay the loan off when it’s due, they may be a good last resort, but missing a payment will very quickly send you into a debt spiral that is difficult to escape. Mail order catalogues Catalogue companies tend to attract new customers with introductory low interest rates or no interest initially. Repayments are made over a specified period – usually 20 or 40 weeks, and if you don’t fall behind, using a mail order catalogue can be a flexible way to spend. The problem is that if you miss even one payment, a higher interest rate will come into effect which can be as much as 40% APR. Other charges will also be applied by the company, including late payment fees and a charge for chasing the debt. As with some credit card companies, your spending limit may be increased regularly to tempt you into purchasing more. On the face of it, buying from a catalogue company seems like a good idea, but these other factors need to be taken into account. Further problems can also arise if you are an agent for the catalogue.
Acting as a catalogue agent Being a catalogue agent involves collecting money from your customers and remitting it to the company. But what happens if one of your customers doesn’t pay – are you ultimately liable for the money they owe? You should keep separate accounting records for all your customers, and if they miss a payment, send off the details to the catalogue company. When you first became an agent, you may have signed a separate credit agreement with the company, but should also make sure there’s a credit agreement between yourself and each customer.
Personal loans from the bank will have a fixed rate of interest so you know how much you’ll need to pay each month, and the exact duration of the loan. In many respects these loans are easier to manage than credit cards, which come with a temptation to build up more debt over time.
The catalogue are likely to take steps to recover any missed payments, whether they are your own or your customers’, but it’s possible that if a signed agreement between yourself and the catalogue company doesn’t exist, they may not have the authority to collect the debt.
Personal loans are generally offered for larger purchases, however, such as a car or refurbishing a kitchen for example.

Experience the Magic
OF A VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS
Make this Christmas extra special and visit Blists Hill Victorian Town, near Ironbridge with friends and family over the two weekends of 3rd – 4th and 10th - 11th December. Soak up the fabulous seasonal Victorian atmosphere and revel in traditional celebrations and entertainment as the townsfolk busily make preparations for Christmas, 1800s style.
his principal enemy and the comical quack doctor, all dressed in garish garb in our traditional Shropshire Christmas Mummers Play. The Victorians loved these early forms of panto, and so will you.
Be transported to a bygone era as you stroll around the town; listen to tales of life more than 100 years ago as you visit the cosy cottages, hum along to seasonal music from brass bands and choirs and tour the Town on a horse-drawn cart. No visit will be complete without a visit to see Father Christmas in his wonderful grotto. You can even pet his reindeer before they start their mammoth journey around the world on Christmas Eve.
One of the ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums in Shropshire, Blists Hill will be open from 10am to 4pm on these Victorian Christmas weekends. Entry is £17.95 for adults, £13.75 for 60 plus, £11.85 for children 5 - 18 years. A special Christmas Family Ticket (2+2) is available at £55 and under 5s are free. A visit to Father Christmas is £3.50 extra per child including a gift to take home. Print-at-home tickets can be purchased online or you can pay at the gate on arrival. Annual Passports are not valid for these weekends but current Passport holders will receive a 25% discount on presentation of a valid Annual Passport Ticket when paying on arrival.
The most perfect Victorian ‘Christmas card scene’, with a stunningly decorated Christmas tree, will be the centrepiece in the Goods Shed where you can also make paperchains, write a letter to Father Christmas and leave a note on our Wishing Tree.
A visit will be a great excuse to call in to the shops around the Town, where you will find some unusual Christmas gifts like traditionally made cast-iron paperweights and doorstops, handmade plaster decorations, perfumed soaps, hand printed gift wrap, traditional sweets and Victorian Christmas cards.
The air will be filled with music and laughter around the Town with brass bands, carol singers and Punch & Judy shows. Don’t miss the dastardly villain,

Garden Fireworks be bitterly disappointed. Pot-grown plants should be available for planting now or in the spring, or you can buy the corms to plant towards the end of winter and, provided they are in the right spot, these plants will look like the ultimate elegant arching firework. If fireworks that look like clusters of stars are more your scene, then take a look at the sedums or ice plants, many of which have star-shaped flowers, either clustered together in tight heads or held as stunningly pretty single flowers. Some of the sedums, such as ‘Autumn Joy’, are still just about in flower at present, but even if you have missed much of the display for this year, plant pot-grown specimens now and you can guarantee that from late summer you will have a tremendous show of blooms for several weeks, certain to attract bees and butterflies. The angels’ fishing rods, diorama, also have arching stems which are produced in great numbers surrounded by broad, almost grass-like leaves, each measuring up to 5 ft (1.5m) in length. The stems are covered with rich pink funnel-shaped flowers about 2 in (5cm) long, which dangle and sway in the wind - and the great thing about them is that they just keep on bobbing straight back up again, even on a windy site.
With bonfire night on November 5th just around the corner, you may be planning to celebrate with the traditional display of fantastic fireworks - but why not also think ahead and plant yourself a few garden fireworks to enjoy for years to come? At this time of year, there are still several flowers that look stunning in the border and very much remind me of fireworks. Red hot pokers or kniphofias, also aptly known as torch lilies, are flamboyant plants that are mostly natives of southern and eastern Africa. Try Kniphofia ‘Brimstone’ for a rich yellowyorange colour, or if you want something smaller then how about ‘Little Maid’, which has ivory flower spikes topped with a warm yellowish tint and reaches a height of about 2 ft (60cm). ‘Fiery Fred’ really lives up to its name with extremely bright orangey-red flowers, while ‘Alcazar’ has blazing red flowers. They should be available in garden centres now, and they do well if planted out in early autumn or spring in a sunny spot with a well drained soil. Once established you will have a regular display that really will go off like a rocket! The crocosmias too help to provide some much needed colour at this time of year, and if you want a real splash of fire then take a look at ‘Lucifer’, with its flame-red, almost trumpetshaped flowers clustered along an elegantly arching spike, or for golden yellow flowers consider ‘Canary Bird’. There are lots of different varieties of crocosmia (once known as montbretia) and provided you choose a site with sun or part shade in a well drained yet also moist soil, they will thrive – but that bit of moisture is essential if they are to flower as you hope. Grow them in completely dry conditions and you will
64
Thinking ahead to the summer, consider growing some lupins, either one of the many yellow varieties or one of my favourites, ‘My Castle’, which has rich red flowers - just like a rocket racing skywards, but far less noisy. If you want a tree in your garden but don’t have much space, then the Kilmarnock willow, Salix caprea ‘Kilmarnock’, is a good option, and reaches a height of no more than 6 ft (1.8 m) after 10 or 15 years. It has long weeping branches and bright yellow fuzzy catkins that cluster all over the stems before the leaves break in spring, far better than any real Roman candle I know! At this time of year, look around nearby gardens and see what a fantastic display autumn foliage can put on. Plant anything with good autumn colour and you could guarantee you will have a glowing bonfire each and every autumn. A visit to your garden centre at this time of year will reveal a plentiful supply of shrubs and trees putting on a fine display to make you reach for your wallet in double quick time. And finally, when you are thinking about Guy Fawkes’ night, remember that if you are going to have a firework display, try and make that bonfire at the last minute in order to minimise the risk of hedgehogs or other wildlife hiding beneath the heap and then coming to an untimely end. The hedgehog is one of the gardener’s best friends, as it eats huge numbers of slugs and many other garden pests.

Gardening
TOOLS OF THE TRADE bulbs and for mixing up small amounts of compost. These are a tool where it is definitely worth feeling the handle to ensure that that the grip is comfortable. Most garden centres offer stainless steel or coated steel garden tools. Stainless steel does not rust and many people find they move through the soil better, but the price is usually considerably higher. Coated steel tools are much cheaper and provided you keep them clean and oil them at the end of each season and periodically throughout the year, they last well.
Autumn is now here. There is plenty to do in the garden and if you want to make jobs as easy and speedy as possible, it is essential that you have the right equipment. Whether you are just out to buy a few new tools or are setting up a selection of equipment for the first time, it really does pay to choose the right things in the first place. What you choose is going to depend to an extent on how often you are likely to do any one job and on the size and type of garden you have. It really is worth buying as good a quality garden tool as possible. Poorly made and badly designed tools can work out a lot more expensive (and frustrating!) in the long run, so start with a few good ones and build up gradually. Try handling any gardening tools before you buy them, so that you can ensure that they are the right size and weight for you and that the handles are comfortable to hold. If the tools do carry a guarantee then make sure that you keep the receipt and any relevant label from the tool itself or else it may well be difficult to prove precisely when you bought it. A good quality fork and spade are essential and they need to be sturdily built if they are to do jobs such as digging, turning over soil and so forth. The neck and head of the spade should be moulded from one piece of metal for added strength. The shaft is usually constructed from wood or metal and make sure that it is firmly attached at both the head end and the handle. Some traditional-style garden tools may have wooden handles but most now have D-shaped plastic handles. Choose forks and blades whose metal parts have been treated to prevent rust. A hand fork and trowel are essential for smaller jobs such as weeding or gardening in confined spaces, and they are also great for moving and dividing smaller plants, for planting
68
A hoe is useful for weeding between small and established plants and for aerating the surface of the soil. Keep your hoe sharpened at regular intervals and it will last for ages and slide rapidly and easily through the soil. Most hoes have a 1.5 metre (5 foot) or longer shaft which is comfortable for most gardeners to use. However, if you are very tall, then longer ones may be available from some manufacturers. My favourite is the SpeedHoe, UK designed and with an unusual almost heart-shaped head with a blade running around all edges and a pronged rear, making it the easiest and most effective hoe I’ve ever used. A spring-tined rake is really useful because it has thin flexible wire tines which make it perfect for raking up lightweight debris and fallen leaves or, of course, lawnmower clippings. A garden rake can also be used to rake up leaves although the job is slightly harder, but its main use is to break up lumps of soil and help you to create a fine level area for sowing seed, whilst at the same time removing stones, lumps and other debris. You can then use the head of the rake to help level off the soil. If you plan to grow vegetables, then a small hoe known as an onion hoe is an invaluable tool and allows you to weed quickly and easily, even between fairly closely spaced crops. You can also use it to weed in amongst ornamental plants of course. For really tight spaces and weeding between paving, and in gravel in asparagus beds etc, I’m addicted to my SpeedWeeder, a small red-handled tool l which is the best I have used for hoiking out dandelion roots in one piece too! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com and book Pippa for a gardening talk or peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, pull-out EasyTunnels, biocontrols for vine weevils, leatherjackets and chafergrubs, signed books and lots more.

Travel
Just 35 minutes from Rhodes by catamaran, Symi is one of the prettiest Dodecanese islands, ‘a neoclassical beauty’, they say, ‘ blanketed by the blue sky’, rising like a sentinel on the edge of the Greek archipelago. It’s only 8x13 km but the traditional ambience and scenery simply steal your heart away. From afar, the island is a rock, barren and dry, but sail into the harbour and on the deep blue inlet of the Aegean sea, Symi greets you like a dream with all the colours of the rainbow nestling in the cusp of the hills. Shimmering reflections, pastelhued houses at the waterside, Chorio, the old village climbing up the slopes, toy-like windmills along the crest, it’s a delightful scene which budding artists aim to capture from myriad vantage points. Chorio and Yialos, the harbour, make up the capital named after the island. Stepping ashore in Yialos is awesome. In such a lovely place, where do visitors start? Some make their way along the scenic promenade around the horse-shoe harbour, others while away the time in shaded tavernas where salads and seafood come with glorious views. Bells chime all around, tiny chapels beckon up interminable flights of steps and the beautiful mansions of the Italian era glow in the midday sun. At the end of the peninsula, the iconic clock tower leads to a smaller bay where pleasure and fishing boats bob at anchor and a sprinkling of parasols betrays the presence of a beach. Meanwhile downtown, a few stalls sell sponges and olive oil but beyond the harbour, it’s all tangled lanes and steps, hundreds
70
SYMI ISLAND
of them, climbing up to Chorio through tightly-packed houses. It’s easy to lose all sense of direction in this never-ending maze but there are decorated gables and balconies, potted plants, secret gardens planted with vines, jasmine and citrus trees and courtyards covered in patterned pebbles, here an anchor, there a ship or a dolphin. At the top, the view opens out on the fjordlike bay of Pedi where below the rose-tinted hill tops, holly oak and conifers tumble down almost to the water’s edge. There, life moves at a leisurely pace, fishermen mend their nets on the quay and a narrow coastal path leads to the quiet cove of St Nicholas, reached only on foot or by water taxi. St Nicholas is no exception for all along this deeply indented coastline, near-deserted coves nestle below the cliffs, lapped by clear turquoise water, with not a road in sight. There are cruises around the island, past uninhabited islets and dramatic outcrops, but the most enchanting stop along the way is the Orthodox Monastery of Panormitis down south, rebuilt Venetian-style in the 18th century and claiming the world’s highest Baroque tower. It’s dedicated to Archangel Michael, the island’s patron saint, and when day visitors have left, it’s a wonderful haven of peace framed by pine-covered hills on the edge of the sea. Approaching Panormitis by sea is magical but one can return on a mountain road reaching over 600 metres at Oros Vigla, the ‘look-out’. It’s a scenic rollercoaster through forests and open land, peppered with ruined castles, forlorn chapels, goat tracks, footpaths vanishing into the distance and unforgettable views, from the rugged meandering coast to the nearby islands and, far below, the colourful harbour of Symi bathed in translucent light.

Top Gadget Gifts
FOR CHRISTMAS
There’s a very good chance that this year, Santa’s sack will be stuffed with gadgets: from kid-friendly tablets to expensive iPhones, many people’s presents will be of the digital variety. But you don’t need to spend a fortune to get some great gifts. One of the highlights of the shopping calendar is Black Friday, which is a recent American import: the last Friday in November this year, that’s the 25th of November - is when shops offer massive discounts to kick-start the Christmas shopping season. It’s grown to encompass Cyber Monday, the Monday immediately afterwards, and some retailers run an entire week of deals in the run-up to Black Friday weekend. In the last few years UK retailers have got in on the act, and Black Friday is a great source of bargains, especially on electronics from online retailers. Just make sure you use a price checking service to ensure that the bargains you see are genuinely good deals. Some retailers mimic supermarket wine deals, with gadgets priced artificially high in October so they can appear to be terrific bargains in November. Buying for technology fans can be tricky because they often go out and buy the gadgets they want as soon as they become available. Thank goodness for accessories, then: a leather case for a smartphone or a messenger bag for a laptop makes a great gift, although watch out for “bonded leather”, which is artificially produced and doesn’t wear like real leather. If your intended recipient has young children, a military-specification protective case will save many trips to the smartphone or tablet repairer. Headphones are always a good gift, especially now that Apple has dumped the familiar 3.5mm headphone adapter from its latest iPhones, so wireless Bluetooth headphones or headphones that use the Lightning connector will be a big upgrade over the fairly rubbish Apple versions. But this doesn’t only apply to Apple users: most of the headphones that come with phones are dreadful, and in addition to those designed to make music better you can choose from a wide selection of specialist headphones, such as Bose’s QuietComfort noise-cancelling range. We know from experience that noise-cancelling headphones make train, bus and air travel much more relaxing, and while high-end models can cost over £200 it’s quite possible to get noise-cancelling phones from the likes of Sony for less than £20. And don’t forget wireless Bluetooth speakers too: they’re a great add-on for phones, tablets and laptops, none of which tend to have very good sound systems. It’s usually a good idea to stay away from novelty items - anything hilarious that’s designed to plug into a USB port is surely destined for landfill by Boxing Day - and if you can’t think of anything appropriate, vouchers make an excellent present. Amazon vouchers are great for everyone, iTunes vouchers are fantastic presents for anyone with an iPod, iPad or iPhone, Netflix vouchers are good for TV and film buffs, and there are stacks of vouchers for specific retailers. Keep an eye on the newspaper adverts and voucher websites, though: some shops, especially supermarkets, run multibuy deals on vouchers such as iTunes vouchers, enabling you to save around 20%. Be careful, though, as if a retailer goes out of business it’s very unlikely that the vouchers will be redeemable, so it’s important to stick with well-known firms. A voucher for Dodgy Dave’s Digital Depot might not be the wisest investment.

Are we Tired of Shabby Chic?
NOT BY A LONG CHALK
It’s a trend that has been going strong for over twenty years and there’s no sign of it disappearing just yet. ‘Shabby chic’ has been around since the 1990s, when holidaymakers returning from destinations such as Provence, Tuscany and Greece tried to recreate the weathered, sun-baked surfaces found in traditional Mediterranean buildings in their own homes, using specialist paint techniques. The shabby chic look is all about creating a sense of age and wear. Distressed textures, rubbed edges and sun-bleached surfaces all help to build the illusion that an object has been used and well loved for generations. One of the finishes most commonly employed to achieve this effect is chalk-based paint. This flexible medium requires no stripping, sanding or priming and you’ll only need to master a few basic techniques before you can start to use it with confidence. Nowadays there are several different types of chalk-based paint to choose from, but the original brand was created by Annie Sloan, a leading name in interior design and author of a number of global bestsellers on paint techniques. She is famous not only for creating many of the techniques used in shabby chic, but for developing and patenting the paints and waxes used to complete the look. During the 1990s Annie found she was unable to buy the paints she needed to create an authentic feel of rusticity and age, so she returned to the roots of domestic paint-making, using chalk to create a paint similar to distemper, that produced an attractive finish when sealed with a layer of soft wax. The recent interest in upcycling household objects has created a healthy market for furniture painted in the ‘shabby chic’ style. Dark brown wooden furniture has been unpopular for decades and upcyclers have been able to take advantage of this trend, buying pieces at knockdown prices, giving them a new lease of life and selling them on for a profit on Gumtree, Ebay or Shpock. There are many ways in which you can learn how to turn ‘tired’ pieces of furniture into shabby chic classics. Either ask your local chalk-based paint retailer if they offer beginners’ courses or watch one of the excellent “how to” videos on YouTube. Go to www.anniesloan.com to pick up some tips and techniques from Annie Sloan herself or follow simple, step-by-step instructions at www.dummies.com. There are just six easy stages to painting a piece of furniture with chalk-based paints: 1. Wash the furniture with clean, soapy water to remove any surface dirt, and allow to dry. Don’t be tempted to clean the surface with wax, as this won’t provide a secure base for applying the paint. 2. There’s no need to be nervous about uneven brushstrokes. When you’re aiming for a rustic style, the strokes can go in any direction. For a ‘layered’ look you should apply coats
80
of paint in different colours, using a lighter shade under or over a darker shade for contrast. 3. Allow at least an hour for the surface to dry then sand with very fine sandpaper. At this point you will be trying to create the look of furniture that has been painted many times and used so much that the paint has begun to rub off at the contact points, revealing different layers of colour. Sand only where you think the item would have been repeatedly touched (around handles or on the top and bottom corners of your piece). Don’t rush this part of the project: apply light pressure and start sanding in a place where the effect will be less visible. 4. Dampen a cloth and pass it over your item to remove all the sanding dust, then wait until it is completely dry. 5. Chalk based paint is porous, so it is liable to pick up marks and stains if it is not sealed with a layer of soft wax. Use a different brush to apply the wax and don’t use that brush for any other purpose (this also applies with coloured waxes – if you’ve used a dark wax on the brush, don’t use it to apply a lighter shade). Apply the wax generously, using a clean cloth to remove any excess. 6. If you are painting furniture for the garden, you should not apply wax at all as it will not set (just be aware that the piece will age and fade more rapidly if it is left outside). If your indoor item is likely to get a lot of use, let the wax dry for two to three weeks before bringing it into service. You’ll find lots of ideas for designing and colouring your shabby chic pieces if you follow Annie Sloan’s online blogs. Alternatively, visit your local library for books on painting techniques or grab a selection of interior design magazines from your local newsagent to get some inspiration. Whether you want to revive pieces that you currently own or you fancy trying your hand at upcycling and selling on, you’ll find that turning yesterday’s scrap items into today’s interior design treasures is rewarding … and highly addictive.

Get Amazing Internet
EVERYWHERE
Home or abroad, here’s how to get the best connection...
For many of us an internet connection is essential - so what can you do if your connection is slow, unreliable or barely usable? The good news is that most internet connection problems are really easy to fix. To identify the problem, it’s important to look in the right place. If you’re connecting to your broadband via a wireless router, that wireless connection could be the culprit. Wi-Fi signals can be obstructed by things such as radiators, metal mesh in the walls, pipework and even furniture, and you’ll often find a poor wireless connection can be fixed by moving the router, or upgrading to a faster one if the existing router is getting old: Wi-Fi technology has improved dramatically in recent years, and a router you buy today will be much faster with much better range than a similarly priced one five years ago. If your home simply isn’t Wi-Fi friendly - because it’s huge, or made out of really thick stone - then a Wi-Fi range extender can boost the signal, or you can opt for something called Powerline networking. This uses your house’s electricity circuit to transmit data between plug sockets, which sounds like madness but works really well. Look for Powerline AV if you want to have connections fast enough for streaming high quality video. If the Wi-Fi is fine or you’re connecting directly to broadband with a cable, it’s worth checking out the Speedtest.net website. This tells you exactly how fast your broadband connection is. You’ll never get the “up to” speeds advertised, but if your connection is falling far short - so for example if you’re getting around 1Mbps on a line that’s supposed to be good for 12 to 20Mbps - then it’s time to have harsh words with your internet provider. Most broadband connections are ADSL, which uses existing copper wires to bring broadband alongside your phone line. But there’s a newer, faster technology called fibre-optic. That’s what super-fast services such as BT Infinity and Virgin Media offer, and if you’re lucky enough to live in an area where fibre broadband is available it offers a massive increase in speed. What happens if you can’t get any kind of wired connection? Many areas with ropey broadband get decent mobile phone coverage, and if you’re in a 3G (or even better, 4G) coverage area you can use your phone as a personal hotspot. That turns your phone into a personal Wi-Fi hotspot that you can connect to; it then sends and receives data over the mobile phone network on behalf of your connected device. Beware, though: such usage can quickly rack up lots of data, so if you’re on a limited mobile data deal - which is the most common kind of package - you might find yourself needing a more generous data allowance. Be particularly mindful of data if you’re using your phone as a hotspot abroad. It’s often a better idea to turn off data roaming on your phone and look for public Wi-Fi hotspots instead, because something as simple as checking email and Facebook can easily result in big bills. Some networks offer roaming deals that enable you to use mobile data when you’re abroad for a small daily fee, but if you don’t take advantage of them you’ll soon discover that mobile data can be more expensive than gold, oil or printer ink.

PETS:
THE BEST DIET FOR YOUR RABBIT
If you consider how rabbits eat in the wild, it’s clear that natural foods best support their delicate system, and help them to live longer. Here are some of the most nutritious foods to give your rabbit, as recommended by the RSPCA and PDSA.
Safe leafy greens
Hay
Root vegetables and fruit
Fresh hay that is dust-free should constitute the major part of your rabbit’s diet. It’s best to keep it away from their bedding though - perhaps in a hay rack attached to the side of the cage. It takes a long time to chew hay, and it’s this chewing action that also helps to keep their teeth down.
It’s a myth that carrots should make up a large part of your rabbit’s diet, as like fruit, carrots are high in sugar. They should be given as an occasional treat, and only in small quantities.
Suitable vegetables and herbs should be washed to remove any pesticides, and provided daily. Your rabbit will appreciate variety, but bear in mind that some plants are poisonous to rabbits, so take care and get advice from the vet if you’re unsure.
Pellets The PDSA suggests one tablespoon of pellets or nuggets per day for your rabbit, or twice a day for larger rabbits weighing over 3.5kg. Water Fresh drinking water should be available at all times, from a clean container. Rabbit drinking bottles that attach to the side of the cage are a good idea. They’re easy to clean and can be topped up quickly. www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/rabbits/diet www.pdsa.org.uk/taking-care-of-your-pet/rabbits/diet

Notes from your local Ironbridge Gorge Councillor It’s certainly been an exciting few months with many community events taking place in the Ironbridge Gorge. I have been out and about hearing the views from the local community and I know many are very interested in the future of the Ironbridge Power Station. I can confirm that Uniper the owners of the site plan to begin demolition work in the middle of 2017. Telford & Wrekin Council are working with Shropshire Council to explore if demolition should proceed under an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) or an EI screening and I continue to work closely with TWC officers to ensure we appropriately consider heritage mitigation, stabilisation issues and protect the local environment during the demolition. As the Borough Councillor for the Ironbridge Gorge I understand broadband has long been a concern to residents/businesses and I am delighted to confirm Superfast Telford is now working in the Gorge improving the coverage of broadband. Work is now progressing as part of Phase 3 planned for the Ironbridge Gorge between Autumn 2016 to Winter 2017 and there are currently approximately 1600 premises currently planned to benefit from being able to access faster fibre broadband. A new £7 million footbridge for Telford Railway station has been approved which should see a significant improvement to the gateway to our Borough. As a Member of the Planning Committee I felt as though the Council missed an opportunity to create an iconic landmark that took inspiration from the Iron Bridge and represented our vision for Telford & Wrekin. However, I am delighted to confirm we secured a condition for the public art to reference the Iron Bridge and construction will begin in 2017.

Why Collectors
LOVE THE VINYL VIBE
In recent years there has been a revolution in the way we buy and listen to music. Thanks to new technologies we are now able to play the music we love wherever, and whenever, we want to hear it. With so much emphasis on the streaming of music from services such as Spotify, iTunes and Tidal, the use of minidisks, cassettes and CDs now seems strangely old-fashioned. After all, when you can stream everything you could ever wish to hear direct to your mobile phone, tablet or laptop, who needs a physical format? In spite of all this ingenious and accessible technology, it seems many of us actually prefer to do it the “old school” way. One of the most surprising trends of the 21st century has emerged from music fans who appear keen to turn back the clock. Collecting vinyl records has become something of a cult interest and collectors cite the “authenticity” of analogue sound, the tactile quality of vinyl and the availability of album cover art and liner notes as reasons why they prefer vinyl recordings to digital music files or CDs.
Starting your collection
Many vinyl enthusiasts start out by taking on someone else’s collection, often in the form of a gift or inheritance from a family member. Chances are that these records will not be rare items, but they will at least provide the basis for a larger collection. Darren Yeats, a founder of the Edinburgh-based record store Voxbox Music, says that car boot sales, charity shops, record fairs and specialist vinyl stores are the best places to start digging around for additional records. You might even come across a rare release as you browse.
current market trends in order to sell at a profit. Branded as ‘controversial’ following its release in 1970, UK sales of Bowie’s album were initially poor, although the record was re-released and re-mastered during the ‘80s and ‘90s. Due to the rarity of those original pressings, the market price shot up to over £1,000 when the artist’s death was announced earlier this year.
How do I build up my collection?
Online sites recommended by collectors include Classic UK 45s – which specialises in 45 rpm releases from the ’50s and ‘60s; Planet Earth Records (an online record store with thousands of rare vinyl records) and discogs.com – where you can buy records at relatively low cost and exchange information with other vinyl fans. Record Fairs are also great places to browse and chat with other enthusiasts. Go to www.recordfairsuk. co.uk to find dates of fairs taking place in your area.
Yeats says the aim should be to buy items that are in good or excellent condition, pointing out that “If [records] are not immaculate, you will usually have to play them at least once to properly assess the condition.” He advises buying albums by artists that you like, regardless of their potential resale value. That way, if the record’s condition turns out to be less than perfect, you will still have a piece of music you enjoy.
Don’t forget contemporary vinyl
Once you’ve acquired a few records, you’ll need to decide how to play them. Vintage equipment can be hard to repair if there’s a problem, so most collectors opt for a modern, portable player (£50 - £100) or a modern turntable that can be linked to a computer (from £80 - £120).
Although many contemporary vinyl releases are less than ten years old, it’s still possible to find albums that are highly collectable. Bands such as Radiohead, the Arctic Monkeys and Keane released very limited numbers of vinyl pressings and many of these discs are now selling for between £50 and £100 each.
How will I know if a record is valuable?
As with any collectable item, rarity is the main driver for pushing up value. Certain packaging characteristics, such as foil-stamp numbering on the jacket (001/500), different coloured pressings, misprints or famous or controversial images/text can add to the value. Records that have been withdrawn or censored should also be on the collector’s radar, as this indicates that a smaller number will have been sold. David Bowie’s third album, “The Man Who Sold the World”, is a good example of the way a collector can combine knowledge of an artist’s back-catalogue with an understanding of
When talking about vinyl records, it’s easy to focus on vintage collections and forget that many of today’s artists are releasing tracks (or re-releasing past work) on vinyl. These records cost more to buy, but music fans attest that vinyl produces a clearer, more accurate sound (that’s apparently because the grooves are able to capture the music’s waveforms more precisely).
Vinyl is a gateway to a whole world of music enjoyment. As a collector you’ll have the opportunity to find out about interesting but little known artists, as well as learning more about the artists you already admire. Best of all, you’ll be able to connect with the large and diverse community of vinyl fans who are eager to share their knowledge: so get out there and start collecting today.

Take some... Traditional values and service Established in 2003, The Kitchen Depot is a family-owned and run business that remains true to our founding values of honesty, integrity and sheer professionalism. We take immense pride in our reputation for service and commitment to our customers, with more than half of our business coming from customer recommendations to their family and friends.
...add a dash of… Quality and Value
All of our kitchens are manufactured to an exceptionally high German specification, on site, in our own factory and by our own people. That way, we have total control over the product quality, the production timescales AND the manufacturing costs. With no middle-man – you buy direct and we are able to pass these time and cost savings directly onto our customers.
…then a big chunk of…
Ownership and Responsibility
Unusual in this insincere world, admittedly. But we mean it. We are totally committed to providing you with the best kitchen, at the best price, installed with the highest level of service and professionalism. And on the exceptionally rare occasion that something could have been done better – we hold our hands up – and put it right. Fast. No fuss. No hassle. No argument. Just sorted.
...a soupçon of…Harmony At The Kitchen Depot, we know that we are only as good as our people. They ARE The Kitchen Depot brand. That’s why we look after our staff every bit as well as we look after our customers. Because we know that happy workers, pulling together in harmony, make for happy customers.
