Restaurant Review
FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE
The Granary Grill
Weston Park, Weston-under-Lizard, Nr Shifnal, Shropshire TF11 8LE
T: 01952 852107
The Granary Grill is situated in the beautiful grounds of Weston Park stately home, the granary building was built in 1767 and was the last building on the grounds to be restored in 2009. The building retains many interesting features with lots of exposed brick, high ceilings and large arched windows. The split level seating area provides diners with views from the mezzanine level over the Church Pool to the estate cottages or looking out onto the Granary courtyard, which is perfect for al fresco dining (weather permitting!). The Granary is also home to a deli, cafÊ and art gallery. The restaurant has a rustic feel but it is very clean and elegant, just as you would expect from such a venue. We were shown to our table which was situated on the upper part of the split level restaurant, the view from our table was amazing and we were lucky enough to watch the sun go down as we dined. In the centre of the restaurant is the bar which is very well stocked with a great selection of wines, beers and spirits. I ordered a large glass of white wine and Nik chose a bottled Moretti beer. For starters Nik ordered the Fried Tiger Prawns and I chose the Spiced Confit Duck Spring Roll. Nik’s prawns were served with garlic and chilli aioli sauce, Nik said the prawns were wonderfully fresh and succulent; the chilli aioli gave a welcome hit of heat to the juicy prawns. My spring rolls were served with a marmalade and soy dipping sauce that added lots of flavour to the dish, the spring rolls were lovely and crispy on the outside and very soft on the inside, just perfect.
8
For the main courses there were a good selection of dishes including some cooked on the grill where you can see the chefs prepare your meal before you. The open plan kitchen is at the heart of the restaurant where the sights, sounds and smells create a sense of theatre. Head Chef Guy Day and his team serve up homemade classics, signature steaks and dishes with an imaginative twist. I ordered the Home-smoked Pork Belly and Nik chose the Braised Lamb Shoulder. I could smell the smokiness of my pork belly before I even took a bite and it tasted even better than it smelt; there was a large mushroom, grilled tomato and a lovely sweet apple sauce to accompany my meal, I had also had some new potatoes which were perfectly seasoned with a little melted butter (I
FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT had been given the choice to have either chips or mash too). We also ordered some seasonal vegetables to accompany our dishes, which were perfectly cooked. Nik’s lamb came with a herb cous cous and had been cooked with Middle Eastern spices, Nik commented, ‘The spicy slow cooked lamb melted in the mouth, the minted yoghurt added a refreshing coolness from the spices and the light and fluffy cous cous had hints of sweetness with juicy sultanas‘. As our waiter asked us about desserts I quickly jumped in before Nik to order the dessert of the day, which was a Pistachio Parfait with Chocolate Mousse. Nik opted for the Dark and White Chocolate Roulade. The pistachio parfait was quite a firm texture but when you put it in your mouth it quickly melted, a great combination of textures with the velvety smooth rich chocolate mousse and an added crunch from the pistachio nuts. Nik’s White and Dark Chocolate Roulade was wonderfully rich and luxurious and drizzled with a smooth chocolate sauce, pieces of candid orange added a citrus burst of flavour - quite an indulgent dessert. Sunday lunches are available between 12-4pm, 2 courses are £14 and 3 courses are £19. A lunchtime menu is available between 12-3pm. Dinner is served 6:309:30pm Wednesday to Saturday. The restaurant has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere where locally produced food, simply cooked is the order of the day. From the Autumn there will be more steaks added to the menu and they will be focusing on more steak specials, we are looking forward to coming back to try those. So whether it’s a sophisticated night out you’re after or a lazy Sunday afternoon, Granary Grill has all occasions covered.

Recipe
TART BOURDALOUE
This classic French tart has a lovely rich almond frangipane filling. Choose pears that are firm, but not rock hard.
Ready in 1 hour 30 minutes (plus chilling)
Serves6- 8
1.
INGREDIENTS:
2. Beat the butter and sugar together in a bowl until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs, then the almond extract. Sift over the flour and fold in with the ground almonds to make a smooth mixture. Preheat the oven to 200C/fan 180C/Gas 6. Place a heavy baking sheet in the oven to heat up.
• 225g ready-made puff pastry • 75g unsalted butter, softened • 75g caster sugar • 2 medium eggs, beaten • 1 tsp almond extract • 75g plain flour • 100g ground almonds • 3 firm pears, peeled, halved and cored • 2 tbsp apricot glaze, warmed (see Tip)
Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 23cm round fluted flan tin. Trim the edges and prick the pastry all over with a fork. Chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
3. Spread the mixture in an even layer in the chilled pastry case. Place one pear half, cut side down, on a board. Using a sharp knife, carefully slice widthways through the pear half about 10 times. Repeat with the other pear halves, keeping them in their shape. 4. Arrange the sliced pears on top of the almond mixture, fanning them out slightly. Place the flan tin on the hot baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/fan 160C/ Gas 4 and bake for a further 20-25 minutes until golden. Cover the tart loosely with foil for the last 15-20 minutes of the cooking time to prevent the top from over-browning. 5. L . eave the tart to cool for 10-15 minutes then glaze the top with the warmed apricot glaze. Serve warm or cold with crème fraiche, if liked.
TIP Look out for small jars of apricot glaze in the baking sections of supermarkets, or make your own by pushing 3-4tbsp of warmed apricot jam through a fine-holed sieve.

The Darby Singers
ARE SEEKING A NEW MUSICAL DIRECTOR As such we have very strong community links formed over two decades, and in addition to performing in formal concerts we regularly sing for local causes such as residential/nursing homes, fundraising events and Churches etc., free of charge. We also regularly raise money for charities such as the Severn Hospice. We currently rehearse on a Wednesday evening during school term time at the Abraham Darby Academy, Madeley, and as our current MD of 11 years will sadly be leaving us at Christmas, we are desperately seeking someone to take her place in January 2017, as without an MD the choir will fold.
The Darby Singers, a mixed community choir established in1998 are made up of an eclectic bunch of around 35 people who love to sing, and as we were going strong a decade before Gareth Malone made Community Choirs fashionable, we can definitely lay claim to being an 'Original Community Choir'!
If you are interested in applying for the position, please contact us via our Website or Facebook Page: www.thedarbysingers.co.uk www.facebook.com/TheDarbySingers/

Beauty
HOLDING ONTO SUMMER
This month we’re making the most of the last of the rays with some summer-inspired beauty finds. With its fresh, citrusy scent of mandarin and grapefruit, warmed by sandalwood, Weleda’s Agrume Jardin de Vie fragrance conjures up images of heady Tuscan nights. And at just £19.95 for 50ml, you can spritz it on whenever you’re missing your sun lounger. Post-holiday blues? Weleda’s Grenade Jardin de Vie contains notes of neroli and davana, both of which are believed to help lift the spirits and relieve stress. The final fragrance in Weleda’s collection, Rose Jardin de Vie, is a softly romantic mix of rose, geranium and ylang ylang. www.weleda.co.uk If you’re lucky enough to book a last minute break away, there are still some great travel kits on the market. Neal’s Yard Remedies brought out their Limited Edition Travel Kit in July, so there may still be the odd one left on the shelf. The kit contains a refreshing White Tea Facial Mist and indulgent Wild Rose Beauty Balm, amongst other mini products. If, like me, you love a long soak in a hotel bath, you might want to treat yourself to an Olverum Bath Oil Travel Set, £16. The bath oil is formulated with fragrant essential oils specially chosen to help you relax, destress and unwind. Each of the three bottles contains enough bath oil for three separate soaks. Pick your set up from Harvey Nichols, Fenwick or www.Olverum.com. A face serum can help your skin to recover from the drying effects of too much sun, chlorine and air conditioning. This month I’ve been trying What Skin Needs’ Hydrating Facial Serum. A blend of plant extracts and seed oils, it’s packed with antioxidants, and leaves my skin feeling softer and more hydrated. The main active ingredient, plantolin, has been scientifically proven to soothe, renew and protect skin. The bergamot fragrance is pleasant, although it doesn’t quite mask the scent of olive oil. While the serum is an oil, rather than a lotion, it does absorb quickly and doesn’t leave your skin feeling greasy. £17.99, www. whatskinneeds.co.uk.
Bobbi Brown’s new Sunset Pink collection
is apparently inspired by ‘the incredible twilight glow of Telluride skies at sunset’. Launched in July, the collection includes highlighting powders, gel eyeliners, lip glosses, cheek tints and cream eyeshadows. I’ve been trying the eyeshadow, £19.50, which comes in four very wearable shades, and is a dream to apply. There’s still time to show off your tan (fake or otherwise) before long-sleeve-season is upon us. Cocoa Brown by Marissa Carter’s Golden Goddess Shimmering Dry Body Oil, £12.99, adds a subtle sheen to enhance your tan. You can also use it to highlight cheekbones, collar bones and other areas. A little goes a long way, so use it sparingly. Cocoa Brown by Marissa Carter is an award-winning Irish brand and sold in numerous high street stores, including House Of Fraser, Superdrug, River Island, Tesco and Primark.

Toyah
ACOUSTIC, UP CLOSE & PERSONAL AT ENGINUITY
After Toyah’s sell-out performance last year, the household name, pop icon, TV presenter and stage/ screen actress is returning to the Engine Shop at Enginuity in Coalbrookdale on Friday evening, 7th October. ‘Toyah: Acoustic, Up Close & Personal’ is a wonderful chance to experience the 1980s pop superstar in an intimate setting where music and stories take centre stage. This lively, entertaining and revealing show sees Toyah performing an unplugged set of her much-loved hits and classic songs. Guitarists Chris Wong and Colin Hinds will accompany Toyah on meticulous and melodic acoustic versions of It’s A Mystery, Thunder In The Mountains, I Want To Be Free and Good Morning Universe through to Sensational, a track from a recent national TV advertising campaign starring Patsy Kensit. Toyah will also be recalling stories from her colourful, 35 year career, which has included roles in Calamity Jane, Cabaret, Peter Pan, Jubilee and Quadrophenia. From filming pop videos on horseback at 5am in the morning to acting alongside Katharine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier
this is a show which lifts the lid on working in the entertainment business. 2015 saw Toyah act in the acclaimed cult British feature film Ahhhhhhhh! directed by Steve Oram, while 2016 will also see the release of more films in which Toyah has roles including Extremis, Lies We Tell and Kaleidoscope Man. As ever, Toyah’s annual concert diary is also packed with summer festivals, acoustic shows and electric gigs with her full band. Her transatlantic rock band The Humans featuring Bill Rieflin (King Crimson, REM) and Chris Wong recently released their third album Strange Tales. Priced at £20 per person (no concession) tickets to ‘Toyah: Acoustic, Up Close & Personal’, are available in advance only. They can be purchased online or from the Ironbridge Visitor Information Centre and any of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum shops. Tickets include admission into Enginuity from 5pm, the auditorium opens at 7pm and the performance starts at 8pm. There will be an interval when light refreshments and bar drinks will be available; Ironbridge Gorge Museum Passports are not valid for this event. For further information call the Ironbridge Tourist Information Centre on 01952 433 424 or visit www.ironbridge. org.uk; more details about Toyah can be found on www.toyahwillcox.com.

Use Colour
WITH CONFIDENCE most quickly (a busy hallway or a child’s bedroom, for example) in a darkish shade. You might want to consider a high-gloss, washable surface finish, too. A simple, one-colour scheme is relatively easy to get right – provided you choose the right colour. Combining two or more can be more challenging, but hugely rewarding. As Little Greene MD David Mottershead says: “Using paints effectively in interior design is a much more sophisticated process than selecting a single colour from a paint chart. One colour in isolation can be attractive, two in combination can be beautiful and three shades used together can be quite exquisite.” Once you have narrowed down your choices and tried the apps, Fired Earth’s creative director Rob Whitaker has some further tips that will help: “Think about creating a mood board of magazine cuttings and swatches to inspire you, layering colours and textures to build a balanced palette. Buy tester pots of the paints you’re considering so that you can see what they look like as the light changes throughout the day. To really get a feel for the colours, paint A4-sized pieces of paper and stick them to all of the walls that you’re planning to paint. Another trick is to paint the inside of a cardboard box so that you can see how the colour changes as the walls reflect off each other.”
Katherine Sorrell outlines how you can employ paint to colour your home beautiful. It’s fair to say that most of us are cautious about using colour; in fact, a survey by Dulux found that three-quarters of respondents were afraid of making the wrong colour choice. So how can we boost our colour confidence? Easy: arm yourself with a little knowledge and make the effort to experiment. You can always repaint if you don’t like the results. Where to start? Well, it’s a good idea to leaf through as many interiors books and magazines as you can get your hands on. A wealth of effort and experience has gone into producing room sets that work for all kinds of tastes. And don’t forget that all the leading paint manufacturers produce masses of helpful information, from colour cards to brochures that demonstrate how different shades can be put together – and even interactive free apps where you can paint a virtual room without having to apply a single drop of paint: try Dulux’s Visualizer or Crown’s MyRoomPainter, for example. Consider the sizes of your rooms. Would you like to make a small room seem bigger, or a large room more cosy? The basic principles are that pale colours, because they contain a lot of white, seem to recede, enhancing a feeling of spaciousness, while darker colours absorb light and therefore appear more enclosing. Similarly, ‘cool’ colours such as blue and green are more distancing than ‘warm’ colours such as red and yellow. This is why people tend to use paler, cooler colours in small rooms, and white on low ceilings, reserving bolder or darker colours for large, bright rooms. That said, you can break the rules if you wish: perhaps by using a dark, warm colour to make a small room feel welcoming and intimate. From a practical point of view, paint those parts of the house that show the dirt
22
You may be happy with a classic colour palette that will last for years but, if you want to get on-trend, look out for fashion-forward hues. Dulux’s colour of the year is Cherished Gold, an earthy metallic that works well with both fresh pastels and rich jewel tones, while Pantone’s colours of the year are Rose Quartz and a soft blue called Serenity. Crown’s autumn/winter palette is based around three looks: Out of the Dark, with black and charcoal plus dashes of bright yellow, pink and orange; Skyscapes, employing shades of blue mixed with grey and chalky neutrals; and Faded Berries, offsetting deep berry tones with mossy and grassy greens. To conclude? Do your research, seek out your favourite style and either follow fashion or go your own way. The colour possibilities are endless.
NATURAL PAINTS
Natural paints are generally made using combinations of ingredients such as linseed oil, lime, turpentine, citrus oil, chalk and earth and mineral pigments. They allow walls to breathe, so moisture is not trapped beneath useful if your house is slightly damp - and they don’t become statically charged, thus reducing the build-up of dust on painted surfaces (good for allergy sufferers). Because they are more flexible, they tend not to crack or flake. They use either fully renewable raw materials or those that are in plentiful supply, and energy waste during manufacture is kept to a minimum. Manufacturers claim they are just as effective as conventional paints – if not more so – and, what’s more, they smell nice! Brands include Earthborn, Lakeland, Auro, Nutshell, Aglaia, Pots of Paint and Eico. Image - Sherwood matt emulsion, Green Apple matt emulsion and Pastures matt emulsion; all £13.94 for 2.5l matt emulsion, Colours at B&Q, 0333 014 3098; www.diy.com.

Why White
IS RIGHT FOR YOUR HOME
by Helen Taylor
It’s the perfect time of year to make some changes in your home and create the ideal living space for you and your family. Whether your rooms are in need of some new furnishings, a fresh coat of paint or maybe even a complete make-over, there’s no better time to get to work. And no matter what your style or taste there is one colour that you really need to take notice of this year when you’re designing your new-look home: white. You might not think it, but white can be used to create a whole host of different interior styles - from chic, elegant, classic looks to contemporary and cutting-edge designs. Dining Table £599.99, Bistro Chair £39.99. All Dunelm
Rug £24.99-£69.99, Set of 2 Coffee Tables £299.99, Corner Sofa £999.99, Pendant Shade £19.99, Wooden Mirror £59.99. All Dunelm.
It’s an ideal base because it goes with everything, meaning that you can enjoy playing with different accessories, colours and schemes, safe in the knowledge that they’ll be complimented by white walls. And that’s not all; a white hue effortlessly brings light to a gloomy room and creates the illusion of space, which makes it the only choice for smaller areas in your home.

Powers to Ban Letting Agents Welcomed New laws which give local authorities the power to ban rogue landlords and letting agents have been welcomed by managers at Nock Deighton. The law will come into force on October 1, 2017, and it will be a groundbreaking moment, marking the first time that a letting agent can be banned from the industry. Dawn Clarke, director of lettings and property management at Nock Deighton, said the move was long overdue. “As the regional representative of the Association of Residential Letting Agents, I have been involved with various campaigns to push for this law to be introduced, so I am delighted it is finally coming to pass,” she said.
“Previous governments have never reclassified letting agents so they come under the same legal framework as estate agents, which never really made sense to me. “That meant that letting agents who may, for instance, have been involved in criminal proceedings such as stealing deposits, could have just carried on working in the industry. “Now, thankfully, that will be a thing of the past. We would, of course, recommend that people use a reputable agent who has experience of property management in their area so they can be sure their property investment is in safe hands.” Before the new law is introduced, there will be a
consultation on the type of offences which will lead to rogue agents and landlords to be banned. Announcing the new powers, new housing minister, Gavin Barwell, said: “The Housing and Planning Act 2016 introduced a power enabling local authorities to apply to the First Tier tribunal for a banning order against a person or organisation who has been convicted of a banning order offence. “Banning order offences will be specified in Regulations following a public consultation and will be subject to the affirmative procedure. “We are planning to introduce this power on October 1 2017.”

Bovis Team
The perfect space to entertain family and friends was top of Angela Proctor and Richard Humpherson’s wish list when they began searching for their first home. Telford was the ideal location: good transport links with the West Midlands for Angela’s job as a NVQ assessor and in close proximity to Richard’s work in South Staffordshire; but to start with they were undecided about whether to go for a project or a new build. Richard sketched out their dream downstairs layout on the back of an envelope and his drawing turned out to be exactly what they found when they were shown The Southwold house design at Bovis Homes’ Oakford Grange development. “He literally drew the layout of this house. It was unbelievable,” says Angela. “We do like to entertain at home a lot and I didn’t want a kitchen diner separate from the lounge area. I wanted it all to flow out into the back garden as well, because we do love al fresco dining; and that’s exactly what we have here. People are really taken aback when they come through the door and they see how big and wide and spacious it is. We love it.” Angela is full of praise for sales advisor Tracy Groom and independent financial advisor Jay Foster who helped them through the buying process. “I really can’t sing Tracy’s praises enough,” she says. “She knew that we were first-time buyers, and so did Jay, and they literally started from the beginning and explained it all. They made it so easy. It was brilliant.”
32
HELP FIRST TIME BUYERS FIND THEIR DREAM HOME
Richard and Angela used the government’s Help to Buy scheme, which enabled them to get the three-bedroom home they’d set their hearts on. “Initially we didn’t really want to go down that route but we loved the house and the area,” says Angela. “It’s not a massive development but it’s big enough for you to go and have a walk around of an evening if you want to, and it’s right next to some green space: there’s a pool at the top of the road, and it’s very quiet and well laid out. I love the way that the garages are at the back of the houses so you feel that you aren’t going to have loads of cars around. Everything’s neatly tucked away.” The help they received from the sales team was invaluable in helping them make their decision to go for Help to Buy. “It was just so easy because of the way they explained it,” says Angela. “They didn’t put any pressure on us. It was all done in a very advisory way and not as a hard sell. There was none of that. It was all very much about answering our questions and letting us decide what we wanted to do.” And the Bovis team pulled out all the stops to make sure that Angela and Richard could move into their new home in time for Angela’s birthday in May. “Tracy knew it was my birthday and they got us in just beforehand, so I was in for my birthday,” Angela says. “I was absolutely over the moon. Tracy and Roy the site manager made it really enjoyable. It was just seamless. I couldn’t wait to get here and it felt like home right from the word go.”

The Great Fire
OF LONDON
This month marks the 350th anniversary of one of England’s most notorious tragedies: a fire that destroyed most of London in just five days. Sunday, 2nd September 1666 London is in the midst of a drought, reeking of sun-baked sewage. Not long after midnight, an easterly wind rises, blowing down narrow streets crammed with tall, tinderdry timber houses towards the Pudding Lane bakery of Thomas Faynor. There, the ovens are still smouldering and the wind carries their sparks to a nearby pile of wood. Soon flames shoot skywards, setting the nearby Star Inn alight ... and the Great Fire of London begins. Thomas Faynor and his family escaped from an upstairs window, but their terrified maid became the Fire’s first fatality. Many locals fled rather than collecting fire-fighting equipment from local churches and helping local militia tackle the fire, as they were duty-bound to do. Others, whose houses weren’t in immediate danger, dismissed the fire as trivial – including the Lord Mayor, Thomas Bloodworth. When parish constables recommended demolishing adjoining houses to form a firebreak an hour after the fire started, Bloodworth sided with protesting householders. “Pish, a woman could piss it out,” he declared, and returned to his bed. Samuel Pepys, clerk of the Privy Seal, wrote afterwards that people “the world over” commented on the Mayor’s stupidity, “particularly in this business of the fire, laying it all upon him.” However, when Pepys himself was awoken with a warning about “a great fire” at 3am, he too was dismissive, and went back to bed. By now, the fire had reached Fish Street Hill, a block away from Pudding Lane, and destroyed the Thames waterworks – with its machinery that could have pumped water to halt the fire. It raged on towards the river’s warehouses, filled with brandy, butter and other inflammable goods. When Pepys arose, the news that 300 houses had already burned down stirred him to action. From the Tower of London, he gained a grim view of houses burning on London Bridge, and a boat trip to the Bridge for a closer look revealed “poor people staying in their houses ... till the very fire touched them, and then, running into boats, or clambering from one pair of stairs, by the waterside, to another... everything after so long a drought, proving combustible, even the very stones of the churches.” Horrified, Pepys informed the King, who immediately ordered the destruction of all houses in the fire’s path and sent soldiers to help. However, City officials with republican sympathies spurned help at first. This delay meant that by the time command posts were established under the control of the King’s brother James, Duke of York, the fire was already out of hand.
Monday Pepys decided his home in Seething Lane was no longer safe and left at 4am with his wife and some belongings. The fire was halted at the river and prevented from spreading to the south bank by a firebreak on the bridge – a gap in the houses, which had been created by the big fire of 1632. However, to the north,
36
the fire continued to spread, reaching the banks in the heart of the City and destroying the Royal Exchange. Sightseers and people fleeing their homes and workplaces jammed the roads, making it difficult for fire fighters to tackle the blaze. Errant sparks, which started seemingly unrelated fires, and explosions to create firebreaks, created panic and paranoia - inflamed by a lack of communication as the General Letter Office in Threadneedle Street and the office of the London Gazette burned down. People suspected foreigners, Catholics or republicans of terrorism.
Tuesday Charles II himself appeared on horseback, increasing his popularity considerably by leaping down to fight the fire, creating firebreaks and passing water buckets. He calmed the situation but not the fire, which continued to rage, destroying St Paul’s Cathedral and forcing the garrison at the Tower of London to destroy their own houses to create a firebreak around the gunpowder stores. Pepys made a desperate dash to his house to retrieve his valuable wine and Parmesan cheese, burying them in the garden of his friend Sir William Penn for safety. But although Tuesday was the day of greatest destruction, the end was in sight.
Wednesday Overnight, the wind dropped and changed direction. This, together with the pre-existing and new firebreaks, probably saved the rest of London. But the damage was already done. The fire had claimed 13,500 houses and 87 parish churches by the time it was brought under control in the evening; less than one-sixth of London’s buildings remained and isolated fires burned until Thursday. Although official recorded deaths are in single figures, the true figure – especially if indirect deaths in the dire camps for the newly homeless are included – may be in the hundreds. Countless deaths could have gone unrecorded and the fastburning tenements were crammed with the poorest Londoners. Recent archaeological evidence shows the fire reached temperatures of 1700°C, suggesting many human remains would have been unidentifiable or completely destroyed. Sadly, it seems the Great Fire’s reputation for minimal loss of life is almost certainly undeserved.

Plan Your Planting Many gardens are now looking a little tired, as summer flowers try hard to put on a reasonable show despite the tougher conditions and the fact that their season is drawing to a close. It is not a good time for planting shrubs or trees, as the soil tends to be fairly dry, so you can’t even make things look better with a shrub or two. So, do what you can to perk up flower beds and borders and then start to plan ahead for spring - right now garden centres are starting to take delivery of huge quantities of fabulous bulbs, just ready for planting, and a sure fire way to get your garden looking fabulous in those first few months of next year, and indeed for years to come. Get down to the garden centre sooner rather than later, so that you can have the pick of the bunch. Many bulbs will actually start to put down roots at the back end of summer and into autumn, giving them a head start and ensuring a fabulous display in spring, so prompt planting is advisable. The only thing you need to delay is the planting of tulips; these are best planted in October to help them avoid a nasty infection called tulip fire. Don’t forget that many mail order catalogues are available and these have an even bigger array of bulbs, often including many of the more unusual varieties, so send off for a few of these to ensure you have something particularly special to enjoy and to show off to your friends and neighbours! If ordering from catalogues you will need to get a move on, however, so send off for a few as soon as possible. Then enjoy putting your feet up with a cuppa and a pile of catalogues, ready to choose some delightful bulbs ready for planting in the next month or so. Before you set off to the garden centre, take a look at your borders - and indeed anywhere else in the garden - and decide where you can cram in a few bulbs. Remember, the great thing is they are often in flower before the rest of the garden gets going, and so they can be used to under-plant existing trees, shrubs and herbaceous flowers. Bulbs are an excellent way to make the most of every square metre of garden soil, and to ensure that your garden looks lovely as early as possible in the year. Many bulbs do really well in containers, so if you have a permanently planted up container this too can be underplanted with several layers of spring flowering bulbs. Use a transplanting trowel to plant in these tight spaces and that way you’ll minimise damage to the existing plants’ roots. If you are new to using bulbs and feel unsure of what goes together, don’t feel frightened to experiment. Alternatively, many catalogues and even some garden centres offer mixed
38
selections of bulbs for specific purposes and there are also some lovely packs of bulbs following colour themes. These usually represent good value for money too. Have you got a dull patch of lawn? Brighten it up in the early months by planting some small bulbs. Things like crocus or miniature narcissus are particularly useful, as once the flowers have faded you don’t have too much deteriorating foliage to cope with. In larger areas, consider planting up drifts of full-sized daffodils, but make sure that the grass beneath these trees or shrubs is not something you want to keep regularly mown, as you will have to wait for at least six weeks after flowering before you can safely remove the leaves of the daffodils. When choosing bulbs, always make sure they are in good condition before you buy. With a quick look through the packaging (bulbs are often hidden by large quantities of sawdust or wood shavings) you should be able to find the bulbs itself. Avoid any which are showing even the slightest signs of deterioration such as sunken brown spots, excessive softness or the presence of patches of bluish mould on their surface. Larger bulbs generally seem to do better than smaller versions of the same variety so, if possible, choose really good sized plump ones. If you want to buy large quantities of the same variety, then it may be possible to buy a net of bulbs from your garden centre or direct from a mail order specialist nursery. Ideally bulbs should be planted promptly, but if this isn’t possible make sure that you keep them in a cool and well ventilated spot before planting, as this is essential to reduce the risk of them deteriorating. Next month I’ll be looking at novel ways to make the best use of the gorgeous array of available bulbs, so plant some now and then treat yourself to a few more for September planting! Brilliant Bulbs
GARDENING Make use of an outdoor table which is normally left out throughout the year. In spring it is unlikely that you are going to use it for outdoor entertaining, so simply cover it to prevent the surface being spoiled and arrange a selection of pots full of spring bulbs on it – the effect can be really splendid and will make eating out of doors even more fun and stylish.
It is spring bulb time in all the garden centres now. Every one up and down the country should be crammed full of bulbs, many at an incredibly reasonable price, and all of which promise to provide glorious masses of colour, sometimes with scent, for many years to come. By all means plant bulbs in beds and borders, but make this the year that you are a touch more adventurous and, if you don’t have any open ground in your garden and do your gardening purely on a terrace, patio or in a back yard, then don’t forget that there are still plenty of bulb planting opportunities to be had! Bulbs have the potential to make any garden look gorgeous but you can use them to add an element of fun as well as glamour, colour and perfume. Bulbs look fantastic if allowed to naturalise beneath trees, but if you’ve no space for trees then miniature bulb varieties look equally good beneath shrubs. Simply choose a suitable selection such as miniature daffodils or crocuses and plant them in a random or scattered effect beneath the shrub, taking care to minimise damage to the shrub’s roots. Keep them well watered in spring and you should have a fantastic display. On special occasions you may have been sent some flowers and these are often delivered in ornamental plastic-lined woven baskets, which are also available inexpensively from local markets or on the internet. These make perfect planting containers provided they are at least 3” (8 cm) deep. Shallower baskets can be used for smaller bulbs such as crocuses - simply fill them with bulb fibre and then plant up in the same way as you would a bowl of bulbs for an indoor display. To ensure that drainage is definitely not a problem, puncture some holes in the plastic liner and then use any normal multi-purpose or loam based compost mixture. Baskets like this look particularly decorative in the spring, and if you add a couple of ferns or ivies to larger baskets they will look even better.
44
An old bucket - particularly an enamelled or galvanized one - makes a fabulous planter, but remember to drill some holes in the base, or if this isn’t possible, ensure that you place a layer of pebbles or grit at least 2” (5cm) deep in the bottom, so that excess water accumulates below the level of the roots and the bulbs do not rot off. If your garden or back yard is a good size, then make sure that you use some large containers as these look particularly handsome if you can afford the space. Packed full of a single variety of one of the daffodils or tulips or any other spring bulbs, they will look absolutely gorgeous and make a very striking and bold display. Plant the container up in two layers, so that one lot of bulbs is planted a couple of inches deeper than the other, and you will find that the display is prolonged slightly as the deeper ones will flower somewhat later than those planted closer to the surface If you want something really wacky, why not consider using an old bathroom suite or parts of it to make some very unusual planters? A bath may need a lot of compost to fill it – and don’t forget that good drainage will be necessary - but it can act like a full-sized flowerbed. Even a hand basin, lavatory or perhaps just the cistern can be planted up to great effect. For a truly ornamental look, put an old watering can or wheelbarrow to good use by turning it into a planter; it’s the sort of thing you pay a fortune for in a garden centre! And then, guess how to make a decrepit pair of wellies or the pair of boots with a hole in them look fun: yes, these too make wonderful bulb containers!

An Interview
WITH LEWIS HAMILTON... Instead of driving: “I usually ride my motorbike. Sometimes if I get home and I want to unwind I might take the car out, but I want to keep the mileage low on all my cars! So I don’t ever really go that far.”
He thinks he’s matured For someone who has a reputation for speaking his mind, Hamilton portrays a calm aura and claims his years in racing have matured him. He said: “Age, I’m sure, has helped, but as you grow with the team…you realise your place in the team, you know, what I say to the camera is what the guys back at the factory hear me say, and you realise that you’re affecting all of those people with the things you say, so I’m conscious of those things.”
He’s a British hero and an F1 champion and just after he won the British Grand Prix, we were lucky enough to be a part of a small group of journalists who were given the chance to chat with Lewis Hamilton at the launch of the new MercedesAMG GT R. Here’s what we learned about his views on road cars, racing outside F1 and gaining an inch…
He wouldn’t drive in any other series than F1 On the subject of racing in something like the Nurburgring 24-hour race, he said: “I like that I can take [the AMG GT R] around the Nurburgring and have a lot of fun, but I don’t really have any desire to race anything else. The problem is, once you come out of F1, everything else is a step down.” At 31 years old, though, he acknowledges he’s heading towards the end of his career, saying: “That might change. I’ve been driving since I was eight years old, so when I stop racing I’m probably going to have massive withdrawal and want to drive something…”
Danger is exciting Although no car racing appeals to Hamilton, he does say he’d like to have a go in MotoGP, because even riding his bike on the motorway is scary, “so imagine what it must be like at the speeds those guys are going.” On the subject of danger and improving safety, he says: “One of the exciting factors is when we get in that car and we know the danger factor is there. When I see Niki [Lauda], he’s just awesome, he’s a legend, he drove in a time when people were dying often. Obviously we’ve lost a couple of drivers in the last few years…I think it is important for us in the sport to always be considering [safety] and always be working on it, but I hope the danger’s always going to be there, because otherwise anyone could do it.”
Bikes beat cars His garage might be full of luxury motors, but he rarely drives them, preferring to keep the mileage low and the value appreciating.
46
In a sign of the relaxed maturity we rarely see from him during race weekends, he says it’s important to keep perspective when you have a technical fault that’s out of your hands.
His engine has 508 different settings Hamilton had a tough time in Baku after his team put him in the wrong engine setting. Team radio rules didn’t let them tell him how to fix it, which prompted a discussion about F1’s regulations. He acknowledged having fast, technical racing that’s also exciting is a difficult balance to find, but said: “It’s insane how much stuff we have to study…the problem is they’ve made the cars so technical. Of the engine switches I have, one is just one to 14, and the other is one to 14, but in each of those settings is another 10 options.” His colleague then mentioned that they’d calculated there are 508 possible combinations.
He does what he likes Away from the paddock, Hamilton has grown a reputation for enjoying a celebrity lifestyle, and has been seen having fun on jet skis on holiday. Does the team tell him to reign in his extra-curricular activities? “When I was at McLaren I said ‘these are the things I like to do, just so you’re aware’ and when I joined this team I already told them ‘these are the things I do, I’m not gonna stop!’ You know, I’m conscious, I never want to watch someone else drive my car, so I try to be as sensible as I can whilst having fun, which isn’t always the easiest balance.”
He wants to be a development driver “I was talking to Tobias [Moers, AMG boss] and I was like ‘you’ve got all this Formula 1 technology and you have the Formula 1 world champion driving your car – utilise that!” With all his experience behind the wheel, Hamilton clearly sounds frustrated when he describes wanting to change things about cars when he drives them. To get around that, the threetime world champion wants to do a “limited edition series, which I can test, which I can set up and be hands-on with the design.”

Switching To Autopilot?
I HOPE NOT!
The results of an eye-opening survey landed on my desk the other day. I hope you weren’t one of those questioned and, more importantly, don’t get near anyone who was.
Unfortunately women came out in the survey as worse drivers, as the results showed they were nearly twice as likely as men to compile mental “to do” lists and thus be distracted. The moral here is whilst the ability to multi-task is good, it does have its place. But on balance perhaps the ladies were just more honest in their answers than the men?
The University of Hull have a professor of driving psychology (yes really). His name is John Groeger and he has conducted research into drivers who switch to “autopilot” when behind the wheel.
Blokes, on the other hand, were far less worried about not concentrating 100% on the road - a sizable 41% said it did not bother them. (That’s really comforting to know.)
The study of 2,000 responders found that 80% of road users admit to zoning out when driving. This is up from 6 in 10 in a similar study conducted in 2009. 25% of drivers admitted to be thinking of other things whilst driving and, here’s the scary thing: 1 in 6 said they couldn’t remember their entire journey!
48
Professor Groeger states the blinking obvious when he says: “Driving is a complex task that requires our attention.” But he does have a point. Stuff is happening outside the windscreen all the time and if you need to react to it and you’re not 100% “there”, it may be too late. By Iain Betson

Smarty Pants
The Smart ForTwo is a clever little car: a groundbreaking design for an overpopulated planet. If it could talk it would regale you with witty motoring anecdotes, explain the intricacies of the internal combustion engine and do it all while driving you to the shops. Look in its glovebox and you’ll see a Mensa membership card. But no-one really likes a smart rear-end or do they? As of this year, old clever clogs can arrive on your driveway as a roofless cabrio, but today I’m concentrating on its hard-top sibling, because it’ll take a lot more than flashy gimmicks to unstick my own fascination with the Smart car, which began soon after it launched in the late 1990s. This 1 litre Passion test car certainly still cuts a dash in its natural habitat around the towns and cities of the West Midlands - not quite the neon-glow of Tokyo but just the terrain needed to see if it can outsmart its many rivals, most notably the Renault Twingo, which, thanks to Smart’s joint-venture development programme with – ahem – Renault, shares the ForTwo’s underpinnings. The Smart’s short wheelbase (the whole car still retains a tiny 269cm length) means that it turns into corners responsively and rewardingly, yet the ride is smooth and comfortable, which could never be said of the previous generation - it had road manners akin to a substandard soapbox race entry. This gutsy three-cylinder engine develops 71bhp and makes keeping pace with traffic in town easy. And there’s every reason to greet passing cyclists without shame or green-faced embarrassment, because - as a corollary of its urban-orientated design – it coughs out less than 100g/km of the nasty stuff. It fits right in with slick city fashion too: trendy shoppers nod

BY ROB TAYLOR
approvingly, while sipping lattes outside ultra-cool coffee shops, and the Smart’s super-cool 15” alloy wheels allow you to bask in your own shop-window-reflected glory, knowing that this vehicle costs just a smidgen under £12,000. But much of this will come as no particular surprise, nor will fans of Mercedes (Smart’s owner) be shocked to learn that it is well-built, blessed with finely upholstered seats and made with top quality interior plastics – or that it can be specc’d to be as sombre or colourful as you wish. Equally unsurprising is the fact that every bit of tech, whether infotainment – the £795 Premium Package which gets you built-in sat-nav, is a must – or safety is top-notch. However what is truly staggering is that in a car small enough to park in your pocket, this six foot tall writer could comfortably be accommodated inside for a lengthy cross-country three hour run, involving motorways – the old Smart car’s nemesis – and myriad A and B-roads, and not come out the other side beset by tinnitus, wracked with back ache. Admittedly the engine can feel strained when under load, but you never feel too under-powered or intimidated on motorways, unless of course you happen to come up against a large automotive colossus when there’s a particularly strong cross-wind. A 0-60mph time of 14.4 seconds won’t win any drag races, however a top speed of 94 mph is all you’ll ever legally need. The Smart ForTwo is still an impressive amount of innovation for a not particularly impressive starting price of £11,070. The 5-speed manual gearbox (you can pay more for an auto) is precise and the gearing is well spaced and, when employed sensibly, it will return up to – officially - 69mpg on the combined cycle. With some fun and frolics I managed around 45mpg. So without having a retro gimmick like the Fiat 500, the cheap practicality of the Renault Twingo, the little Smart ForTwo is a big success in its own right.

Migraine Awareness Week
IT'S NOT 'JUST' A HEADACHE
Migraine is one of the WHO’s ‘most disabling lifetime conditions’. Yet it’s often poorly understood and trivialised. Migraine Awareness Week, from 4th–10th September, aims to change that.
frequently accompanied by nausea and sometimes vomiting, diarrhoea and light or sound sensitivity. Menstrual Migraine (usually without aura) affects fewer than 10% of women. Experts believe it’s triggered by falling oestrogen levels and/or prostaglandin release during the menstrual cycle. It normally occurs on the two days before, and the first three days during, a period, and often lasts longer than other types.
What is Migraine? Migraine isn’t ‘just a bad headache’. Suffered by three times as many women as men, it’s a complex set of symptoms often including headache, triggered by physiological changes yet with no known ‘cause’. However, triggers have been identified: • Stress or excitement – although some migraines start when stress is relieved. • Hunger/lack of food, causing fluctuating/low blood sugar levels. • Dehydration.
Preventing Migraine Avoiding triggers, following a regular routine, and eating, sleeping and exercising healthily can help. Your GP may recommend preventative medications such as topiramate and propranolol for severe and/or frequent migraines.
Treating Migraine Take medications swiftly, as the stomach often stops working effectively during a migraine. Try:
• Sleep (too little or too much).
• Over-the-counter painkillers.
• Change of routine.
• From pharmacies: medications containing pain relief and an anti-emetic that alleviates nausea and vomiting and aids painkiller absorption.
• Alcohol. • Caffeine. • Prolonged screen time – due to screen glare or flickering and muscle tension. • Hormonal changes in women. • Environmental factors – changes in temperature, humidity and altitude, loud noises, flickering or glaring lights, smells. • Jaw tension, coughing, unaccustomed exertion or illness. • Most experts now discount tyramine, found in soft cheeses and wine, as a trigger.
Types and Symptoms Most common are: Migraine with aura (10-30% of migraines). Neurological symptoms occur first, usually lasting less than an hour, normally followed by a headache. Most common symptoms are tunnel vision, double vision, blind spots or temporary blindness, flashing lights and sparkling/coloured spots, stars or zigzags. However, some people also experience weakness on one side or partial paralysis, dizziness, vertigo, numbness or tingling, disturbance to speech, hearing and memory, fear or confusion, and fainting, particularly if they suffer from migraine with brainstem aura and hemiplegic migraine, which are rare subtypes. Migraine without aura: (70-90% of migraines). Attacks usually last 4-72 hours if untreated. The headache is usually a throbbing pain, often on one side, which worsens on exertion. It’s
52
• From your GP: triptan medications, which reverse the blood vessel dilation thought to cause migraine. For menstrual migraine, ask about hormonal contraceptives, oestrogen supplements and mefenamic acid (an anti-inflammatory painkiller that can also alleviate heavy periods). • Botox injections – which may work by interrupting the pain feedback pathway to the brain. • Resting in a darkened room or having a nap. See Your GP if you’ve never had migraine before or suffer from migraine more than 5 days in a month, even if your pain is under control with medication. You may require a preventative medicine. Seek Emergency Medical Advice if you experience: • Paralysis or weakness in either arm or face. • Slurred/ garbled speech. • A sudden agonising headache. • Headache with a high temperature, stiff neck, mental confusion, seizures, double vision and rash. Anna Simons is a Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist who treats a range of conditions from back and neck pain through to plantar fasciitis to sports injuries. Anna has over 20 years of experience and she is proud to be a hands-on therapist and believes in one-to-one treatment and patient education. Anna practices conventional techniques of massage, mobilisations, stretches and exercises, as well as electrotherapy including ultrasound, interferential and acupuncture.
COMES TO NEWPORT PHYSIOTHERAPY PRACTICE . . . Recent National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines list seven conditions that can be treated effectively which include: Plantar Fasci-itis Chronic Achilles Tendinopathy Trochanteric Pain Syndrome Chronic Tennis Elbow Shoulder Pain (sub acromial pain syndrome) Patella Tendinopathy Proximal Hamstring Tendinopathy
Shockwave therapy is an exciting new electrotherapy treatment used in orthopaedic and rehab medicine. It uses an acoustic pressure-wave similar to the science used to break up kidney stones. By disrupting chronic scar tissue at the site of the original injury, the process allows a fresh new healing process to proceed encouraging normal painfree tissue to be laid down. Recovery is further helped through correct exercises, including stretching, strengthening and conditioning.

OCD Awareness Week
9TH - 15TH OCTOBER
While people may joke about being “a bit OCD,” this trivialises a serious and potentially debilitating condition. OCD Awareness Week aims to correct the misconception that Obsessive Compulsive Disorder merely concerns harmless habits or quirks. What Is OCD? 12 in every 1,000 people suffer from OCD, experiencing a range of compulsions, obsessional thoughts and repetitive behaviours that seriously affect their day-today life. On average it’s undiagnosed for 10-15 years, yet 50% of cases are severe, meaning symptoms occupy more than three hours a day. Sufferers typically develop OCD in their late adolescence or twenties, but it affects people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. They may recognise their condition, yet find it hard to believe their compulsions won’t relieve their anxiety or prevent harm.

or
2. Anxiety: caused by the obsession. Paranoia or a feeling of over-responsibility may develop and sufferers may believe they or their loved ones are in danger from something harmless - or that their actions can prevent or cause unrelated harm. 3. Compulsion: behaviours or thoughts patients are compelled to repeat as a result of the anxiety – although often, they’re not realistically connected. 4. Temporary relief: felt briefly when they have ‘completed’ the ‘necessary’ actions.
Types of OCD • Checking: e.g. rechecking locked doors or checking that intrusive thoughts aren’t real memories. • Contamination/Mental Contamination: a fear of germs or verbal abuse, which makes sufferers feel dirty/unworthy. • Hoarding unnecessary and/or excessive items. • Ruminations (prolonged, time-consuming thoughts on harmless topics) or Intrusive Thoughts (disturbing and repetitive in nature, e.g. imagining violence).
What Causes OCD? Genetics: OCD seems to run in some families; this may be a genetic link or ‘learned behaviour’. Brain differences: In some sufferers, imaging shows increased activity and blood flow in brain areas that handle emotional response and a lack of serotonin (a neurotransmitter influencing memory, mood and sleep). Trauma and Emotional Upset: Suffering neglect, abuse, isolation or trauma such as a break-up or bereavement seems

Personality: Certain personality traits, such as perfectionism, may increase the likelihood of developing OCD. While many people exhibit OCD-type symptoms when stressed, OCD is only clinically diagnosed if symptoms:

to increase vulnerability to developing OCD.
• Consume over an hour a day. • Cause significant distress. • Interfere with ability to function in day-to-day life. OCD symptoms may wax and wane, but if left untreated they usually become more severe.
Treating OCD Fortunately, OCD can usually be treated with professional help, although improvement may take several months. CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) encourages people to talk through their fears and behaviours and find healthier ways of thinking. Behavioural exercises including ERP (exposure and response prevention) support patients to face fears one at a time and let obsessive thoughts run their course without ‘correcting’ them with compulsive behaviours. Over time, this challenging treatment can help patients reduce symptoms or sometimes achieve complete recovery. Some people may need medication alongside or before CBT to relieve their anxiety enough to undertake therapy. Medication: SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) increase serotonin levels. At higher doses they’re often highly effective in treating OCD, but need to be taken for 12 weeks before benefits are noticeable. Patients with moderate or severe OCD may need long-term medication. Modern Technology
DON'T LET IT DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH
Modern technology is a great tool for communication and information sharing, but it’s not always good for our health. The problem: Poor Sleep. Blue light emitted by many of our phones, tablets, monitors and flat-screen TVs can adversely affect melatonin, our sleep-inducing hormone. Lack of sleep affects memory, mood, concentration, reaction times and immunity, and can stimulate appetite. Long-term, it may affect language processing and our sense of time, and contribute to serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease. The Answer: Turn devices off for an hour before bedtime and reduce screen brightness in the evening.
The problem: CVS (Computer Vision Syndrome) CVS symptoms include eye muscle strain, eye irritation, blurred or double vision, headaches and neck pain. It’s caused by asking our eyes to cope with constant glare and focus readjustment as they flick between different images and text. The Answer: ••Install a dimmer switch in your room and/or a glare filter for your screen, and adjust your monitor’s brightness and contrast. Position your monitor 20-28 inches away. ••Follow the 20/20/20 rule: every 20 minutes, look away from your screen for 20 seconds (preferably at an object around 20 feet away).
The problem: Prolonged Sitting Research shows that prolonged sitting can seriously damage our health and shorten life expectancy - even if we exercise regularly. The Answer: Avoid prolonged sitting when possible, but if it’s unavoidable, break it up with short stints of activity, e.g. housework or a lunchtime football game. Also try: ••Standing on public transport. ••Walking/biking all or part of the way to work. ••Investing in a standing, treadmill or convertible desk (or conversion equipment for your normal desk or treadmill). ••Sitting on a yoga ball, which requires constant but subtle effort to stay balanced. ••Active Sitting: try raising your heels up and down; contracting your stomach muscles; raising and lowering your leg from the knee or the hip height; swivelling your office chair with your hips; tensing, stretching and bending your arms; rolling your shoulders.
56
The problem: Aches, Pains and Poor Posture Using flat keyboards, laptops, mice and incorrectly positioned equipment can cause back pain, RSI (repetitive strain injury) and Carpal Tunnel syndrome (tingling, numbness or pain in the hand, caused by compression of the median nerve). The Answer: Think Ergonomics ••Sit as close as possible to your desk and keep it clear underneath to avoid twisting. ••Set your computer monitor at eye level. Use laptops on a desk with an attached keyboard and raised monitor whenever possible. ••Keep hands and wrists warm, and use ergonomic keyboards, mice and mouse-mats. Wrist supports may help. ••Check your posture regularly. Beware slouching, leaning forward or to one side, craning your neck or hunching. ••Adjust your chair so that: || Your back meets the chair back and your lumbar region is supported (a cushion that fits the small of your back may help). || Your knees are level with or slightly higher than your hips. || Your feet rest comfortably on the floor. || Your elbows are at 90° to your desktop. || Your arms are slightly raised at the shoulders. || The seat doesn’t dig in behind your knees but does support most of your upper thigh (three inches between seat and calf is ideal). To avoid the risks modern technology poses while still enjoying its benefits, remember: sit up, stand up and switch off occasionally!

When Words
DON'T SEEM ENOUGH
Dealing with somebody who has recently lost a loved one can leave you literally lost for words. You know what it’s like: you worry about what to say and how to say it, and often end up saying nothing at all. Bereavement is a sensitive subject and many of us feel that we simply aren’t emotionally equipped to deal with it. Unfortunately our fear of saying the wrong thing often means that we stop communicating with the grieving person altogether, leaving them without the comfort and support they so desperately need.
How grief can affect us People experience grief in different ways: in addition to an overwhelming sense of sadness, a bereaved person may struggle with a number of complex and frightening feelings, including depression, anger and guilt, leading to a rollercoaster of highs, lows and unexpected setbacks. Close friends or relatives may find themselves in the firing line at this time, but it’s important not to take these outbursts personally. There are no orderly, predictable stages for the grieving process and there is no set timetable for recovery. The bereaved person may behave in uncharacteristic ways as they grieve, for instance, they may choose to sleep in another bed, avoid certain parts of the house or refuse to move personal items that belonged to their loved one, even after months or years have passed.
Why it’s important to listen Patience is key when dealing with bereavement. Just by providing a supportive and undemanding presence, you will let your friend or relative know you care. Everybody worries about what to say, but there’s no need for you to give advice or come up with answers just as long as you are there for the person in question. Dr Bill Webster from the organisation Grief Journey (www.griefjourney.com) points out that at times of stress people may be barely aware of what you are doing and saying anyway. He goes on to quote the famous author Maya Angelou: “People may not remember what you do, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” It’s more important to know how to listen. Let the bereaved person know that he or she has permission to talk about their loss. If the deceased’s name comes up, don’t be afraid to speak openly about them.
Opening up a dialogue Asking questions such as “How are you feeling today?” or “Do you feel like talking?” is better than trying to lead the discussion: you should never try to force someone to open up if they don’t want to. Encourage your bereaved friend or relative to talk about their positive memories of the person who has died. Remembering and celebrating the good times can help to ease the immediate
58
pain of loss. Accept and acknowledge every shade of emotion – from silence to shouting and tears – but don’t judge or try to snap them out of it. It’s vital that a bereaved person should feel free to express their feelings without fear of argument or criticism. A squeeze of the hand or a reassuring hug at times of high emotion is all that’s needed to show support. You may find that they repeat the same story over and over again, in minute detail. This may, of course, relate to their loved one’s death. If that’s difficult to hear, try not to over-react: they may stop talking because they are worried about upsetting you. It’s fine to share your own experiences of bereavement if you think that will help, but don’t push them to take on your coping strategies, as the methods you’ve found helpful may not work for somebody else. It’s always better to support people to find their own way of dealing with loss rather than impose a different viewpoint.
Taking a practical approach Finally, remember that someone who has lost a loved one will inevitably have responsibilities that relate to the death. Duties may include acting as legal executor, clearing up the deceased’s possessions and maybe even selling a property. If you’re able to lend a hand with practical things, you’re more likely to have your help accepted if you make a specific offer. Although it may make us feel good to say things like: “If there’s anything you want, you only have to ask”, we all know that such a generalised offer rarely results in a request for help. “Shall I go through his files for you?” or “Would you like me to come with you when you visit the undertaker?” are simple, direct questions that are more likely to be taken up. There’s no blueprint for dealing with grief: because everyone experiences the shock of loss in a different way, there can be no absolute rules to guide us. Bereavement counsellor Dr Bill Webster sums it up perfectly when he says: “You can’t fix anything, but you can make a difference, and that’s really what it’s all about.”

What Exactly is a Credit Score When you apply for credit or other types of borrowing, the lender will check your credit score to see if you are a good or bad risk. Your credit rating also comes into play in other situations, and has the potential to affect every aspect of your life. A low score means that you may have to pay an increased rate of interest to counteract the risk to a lender. This has massive implications if you’re trying to obtain a mortgage, as a poor credit rating can mean less product choice and higher monthly repayments. Even smaller financial outlays such as a new mobile phone contract involves a check on your credit file by the provider, so it’s a good idea to understand what constitutes your credit rating, and whether you can do anything to improve it in the future.
Credit reference agencies
Three main credit reference agencies exist in the UK – Experian, Equifax, and Callcredit. Your credit rating is made up of various aspects of the information they hold about you, which is contained within your credit report. Any County Court Judgements (CCJs) or other markers of insolvency/bankruptcy remain on your credit file for six years, so even though you can be discharged from bankruptcy in 12 months, the fact is evident on your report for a much longer period of time.
How is a credit score formulated?
A number between zero and 999 is used as a guide to lenders and other interested parties, such as landlords and utility companies, about your ability to repay. A high score translates to a low risk as far as they are concerned – in other words, the lower the score the more problems you could face. Scores between 721 and 999 are generally considered a lower risk, but there are other factors that influence your overall rating: • Your previous history of repayment. • How much credit is available to you. • The level of debt. • Whether any County Court Judgements have been made against you for non-payment, or if you have been made bankrupt in the past. • If you are on the electoral roll. • How many times you have applied for credit. • The length of time your bank account has been open. If you’re married or living with a partner and have a joint mortgage or loan, you’ll also see a financial link with this person. This can adversely affect your rating if they have experienced their own financial problems.
62
AND HOW DOES IT IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE? So how could a low credit score impact on your life?
Difficulty in getting a mortgage
Even if you find a lender willing to offer you a mortgage, the interest rate will probably be much higher, and you won’t have access to the better deals. Having a low credit score is often an indication that you can’t afford a mortgage, but unfortunately it can also affect your ability to rent. Problems renting A landlord will check your credit score - if they see that payments have been missed or that you are not on the electoral role, they could view you as untrustworthy and an unnecessary risk. Personal loans and other finance Obtaining car finance will be difficult if your credit score is low, as this is the main factor on which a lender bases their decision. It’s not only the large purchases that can be stifled, however – you may also encounter problems when trying to increase your bank overdraft or when requesting a higher limit on your credit card. Limited ways to pay Your credit report can impact on the way you pay for goods in shops. With so many store and reward cards now available, they are a popular way to amass points and enjoy reductions in-store. Again, your credit score will be checked if you apply for this type of card, and along with the information on your application form, will influence the company’s decision.
How to improve your credit score over time
If your credit rating is low, or you feel that it could be better, there are specific actions you can take to improve it over the long-term: • Make sure you’re on the electoral register, as a permanent address increases confidence that you’re trustworthy. • Pay at least the monthly minimum on your credit cards. • Cancel any unused credit cards appearing on your credit report - too much available credit adds to your risk from the lender’s viewpoint. • Check for mistakes on your credit report, with all three agencies – you can request that they amend your report, and add a comment against the entry to explain that it is incorrect. • If a spouse or partner has a poor credit score, you can apply for a financial disassociation. A good credit score can make your life more straightforward, so it’s worthwhile reviewing your credit report every so often to make sure that all the details are correct, and also to check for any suspicious activity. It’s possible to obtain a copy from any of the credit reference agencies for a few pounds. http://uk.businessinsider.com/how-your-credit-score-canimpact-your-life-2016-5?r=US&IR=T https://www.sainsburysbank.co.uk/money-matters/guide-tocredit-scores.shtml

Fountains and Waterfall Telford & Wrekin Council are delighted that they have received £49,440 funding from SUEZ Communities Trust to restore fountains and waterfalls in the Town Park. The money from the SUEZ Communities Trust will enable the works to be carried out in the Chelsea and Maxell Cherry Gardens. The proposed project is to deliver, in partnership with the Friends of Telford Town Park volunteer group (FOTTP), the restoration of two jet fountains (one of which is also lit & musical) in the Chelsea Gardens, and a cascade fountain in the adjacent Maxell Cherry Garden. The Chelsea Gardens are a series of gardens – including a water garden - that were exhibited at the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show between 1976-1979. The Maxell Cherry Garden is a Japanese garden featuring cherry trees designed around a water cascade and a carp pool. Both gardens are open daily to the public and free to enter.
SET FOR REVAMP AT TELFORD TOWN PARK
Councillor Liz Clare, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Culture, Sports, Parks and Green Spaces, said: “I am delighted that we have received this money to enable us to make some significant improvements to these gardens. “I am sure that visitors to the park will appreciate the improvements when the work is done and this just demonstrates further investment in our beautiful park.” Chris Pettman, chairman of the voluntary group Friends of Telford Town Park, said: “This work is something that we have campaigned for over a period of time and I am very pleased that the council has attracted this funding to carry out the work.” Marianne Ivin, of SUEZ Communities Trust, added: “SUEZ Communities Trust provides grants through the Landfill Communities Fund. This important source of funding has been available since 1997 and has provided such worthy projects with more than £1.4 billion.” Telford Town Park was voted the best park in the UK last year in the Fields In Trust Awards and also has Keep Britain Tidy Green Flag status.

IS COMING!
Terry Jones Solicitors are pleased to announce the appointment of Oliver Nicholas who has recently joined their Motoring Law and Regulatory Law team based in Telford. Covering work place and vehicle based prosecutions, he offers a few words of wisdom for your driving as the seasons change… Autumn Driving: The seasons have changed and that is the time to check your battery, windscreen wipers, washer bottle levels and tread depth. Consider that air contracts when cold so your tyre pressures drop in the autumn and winter. Winter Driving: You did all of your checks in the autumn, now you should keep warm clothes in the car, plan your route in advance, watch out for your battery level and keep windows clear. Obscured windows can lead to accidents and/or prosecutions. Seasonal Tips: Snow – Check your anti-freeze levels. Clear your windows. Remember - high gear, low revs to keep you moving…. The police always advise against leaving the car unattended with the engine running – it could even affect your insurance cover should the worst happen. Ice – Drop your speed, keep your distance and be gentle on the pedals. Flood water – Don’t forget your car is not designed to sail. If the water reaches half way up your wheels consider giving up and choosing another route... you may get through deep flood water only to find your engine ruined days later. If you are unfortunate enough to be investigated or prosecuted for work or vehicle offences simply contact Terry Jones Solicitors for 24 hour advice on 07850 033551 or on olivern@terry-jones.co.uk

HISTORICAL FICTION
Whether you’re time traveling back to the middle ages, or just revisiting the sixties, historical fiction is a great way to escape the present for a few hours.
The Muse – Jessie Burton
Stolen Years – Kazia Myers
Burton’s The Miniaturist was one of 2014’s bestsellers, and personally I think her latest novel is even better. West Indian-born Odelle lands a job at a London art institute in 1967. Her friend, Lawrie, has a painting he thinks the institute might be interested in, but Odelle’s boss seems to know more about the picture than she’s willing to admit. Back in 1936, Olive is attempting to hide her artistic talents from her father, while building a life for herself in Spain. A brilliant portrayal of forging one’s identity in a foreign country.
It’s 1940 and Poland is under occupation. Seventeen year old Anna is forced to leave her home near Krakow to work on an Austrian farm, where she is little more than a slave. But she finds solace, friendship and love amongst her fellow workers, even as the situation they find themselves in becomes progressively harder. The author’s parents were Polish refugees and survivors of Stalin’s labour camps, and this personal connection certainly comes across in this poignant tale.
The Harrowing – James Aitcheson
The Farm at the Edge of the World – Sarah Vaughan
It’s 1066 and a Norman army is marching through England, destroying anyone and anything in their path. Five travellers are fleeing to the last Saxon stronghold, but will they reach it in time, and is it just the Normans they’re running from? There’s action scenes aplenty, interspersed with the individual stories of the five travellers – a servant, a lady, a priest, a warrior and a minstrel. Aitcheson has clearly done his homework on this era, and also manages to create characters that are every bit as human and flawed as their modern-day counterparts.
Let Me Tell You About A Man I Knew – Susan Fletcher Jeanne Trabuc is a dutiful wife and mother, but her sons have left home and the boredom and loneliness of life in rural Provence in the 1880s are settling over her in a quiet depression. So when a new patient arrives at the asylum that her husband runs, Jeanne can’t resist reaching out to him. An artist, with wild red hair, selfmutilated ear and attitude so different to anyone she knows, he has the power to reawaken the spark within Jeanne that she’s subdued for so long. A beautiful, fictional reimagining of Vincent Van Gogh’s time at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole institution.

Will and Alice are evacuated to a Cornish farm to escape war-torn London. There they find safety, although it’s not the picture-postcard life they may have imagined. Friendship between Will and the farmer’s daughter Maggie blossoms into love, but a lie will change things between the three forever. Seventy years on, Alice wants to atone, but is it too late to make amends? An enjoyable story of love, friendship and how sometimes the hardest person to forgive is yourself.
The Plague Charmer – Karen Maitland It’s 1361 and plague is once more stealing through England. In its wake is an even deadlier curse – fear. As neighbours turn against each other and hysteria sweeps the nation, can Sara protect her family? Up in the manor house, 16 year old Christina and her secret baby are hiding from the world, waiting to see whether her abusive husband will come home from France and claim the child. With a long cast of characters, and plenty of plot twists and turns, The Plague Charmer could well stay with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

Putting the MEN Mentoring Charity looking for Volunteers. Children’s charity Mentor Link supports vulnerable and distressed children and young people by providing long term one to one social and emotional support. Using Safer Recruiting techniques the charity provides fully trained volunteer Mentors to support and listen to referred pupils that are identified as likely to benefit from this type of support. The Mentors listen to, befriend and support young people with the aim of creating a more positive attitude towards themselves and their learning. The mentoring helps the young people build a positive future and their well-being forms the focus of our service. Formed in 2002 the charity now mentors around 450 young people each year across the West Midlands and Warwickshire area, and are recruiting more male volunteers to work with boys in the Telford area for 30 minutes to an hour once a week.
Volunteer Mentor Nigel writes... Having recently retired, I was talking to a neighbour who was a Mentor, and I thought I would really like to do that. I saw Mentor Link’s advert in the local paper, and the next day I applied. It has now been 19 months since I have been mentoring, and I find it so rewarding. I did see a big difference in the two boys I mentored for 5 months before they went to senior school. I am continuing to mentor two lovely lads, and I get on

Travel
In the north-west corner of Tenerife, the Teno Rural Park may not be as famous as Teide or Anaga but this six million year old volcanic range casts a magic spell on anyone who discovers it. Covering just over 8,000 hectares above the lovely village of Buenavista del Norte (meaning ‘nice view’), it climbs to over 1,300 metres at Cruz de Gala, much of it along a windswept ribbon of road with glorious mountain and ocean views.
TENERIFE - OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
gorges and cliffs created by ancient lava flows which left in their wake a rich variety of ecosystems. There are all sorts of endemic plants, laurel forest, succulents such as the candle-like spurge which grows the size of a small tree, coastal thistles, palm, dragon trees and myriad grasses and wild flowers. Hawks, kestrels and falcons hover high above, great colonies of pigeons gather in the forest and if you’re lucky, you might just spot a rare native lizard basking on the stones.
Traditions remain strong in these rural heartlands where farmers toil on terraces carved into the slopes and old folks still weave baskets and palm leaf hats. Others have joined the burgeoning tourist trade and a few rustic inns pop up along the road, serving tiny Canarian potatoes eaten with mojo sauce, meat balls, cod, goat’s cheese or honey-based desserts.
At around 700 metres, the road reaches the mountain village of Masca, the Machu Picchu of Tenerife, they say, and when you set eyes on the rocky amphitheatre towering all around and the razor sharp peak guarding the entrance to the gorge, it’s easy to understand. Draped in bougainvillaea, clinging to a knoll sprinkled with palms and orange trees, it’s a pretty little place, home to barely 100 but attracting ramblers and visitors alike, with a shaded square and steep cobbled lanes leading down to the viewpoint over the gorge. The Atlantic beckons far below, deep blue in the sunshine, but the trail plunging down the ravine is a two to three hour challenge: jumping from rock to rock (and no room for a shepherd’s leap), tackling loose lava grit, boulders, streams, here a flimsy bridge, there a waterfall where you wish you could stop, but there is no turning back. Finally, hot and tired but smiling, hikers emerge on a small sandy beach but exploring the rich ocean life is best left for another time. The beach is totally isolated and the only escape is back up the ravine or a boat ride to the majestic cliffs of Los Gigantes along the coast on the edge of the Park. Meanwhile, on the westernmost tip of this most popular Canary island, the Teno lighthouse offers yet more spectacular views right off the beaten track.
The higher you go, the more dramatic the scenery, with deep
by Solange Hando
In these green bucolic hills, every bend of the road reveals something new, a colourful Guanche hamlet clinging to a slope, a vineyard or two, a row of prickly pear, a fabulous viewpoint where deserted trails head into the mountains suspended between ocean and sky. There you might catch a glimpse of the mighty Mount Teide rising in the distance, the highest point on the island, or come across a young man practising his shepherd’s leap, clutching a long heavy pole to bounce like a goat from rock to rock. In days gone by, it was the only way to keep up with your flock; today it’s a competitive sport which keeps the skill alive.

Lord-Lieutenant Backs Charity’s Campaign Sir Algernon and The Honourable Lady HeberPercy hosted the launch of Shropshire charity Signal’s ‘One in Five’ campaign at their home, Hodnet Hall, in July. Around 64,000 people in Shropshire live with hearing loss. This equates to one in five people, which is more than the UK average. Hearing loss commonly leaves people feeling isolated and struggling to communicate. Through the ‘One in Five’ campaign Signal aims to raise awareness and money in order to strengthen the support offered by its central Hub and to widen its Outreach Service and new Befriending Scheme further from the population centres of Telford and Shrewsbury to locations where residents struggle to receive support through lack of transport or poor health. Sir Algernon and The Honourable Lady Heber-Percy became joint presidents of Signal’s ‘One in Five’ campaign, after visiting its Hub for hearing loss. The Hub, in the Riverside Shopping Centre in
Shrewsbury, is easily accessible from bus and railway stations. The team provides a range of support, from carrying out screenings and explaining how to access audiology services, to demonstrating useful aids. The Hub also hosts sign language and lip reading training, helping break down communication barriers. Signal’s Outreach Worker and member of Telford Deaf Club Joanne Rose supports deaf sign language users, people going through cochlear implant operations and people coming to terms with losing their hearing. She holds a weekly drop-in clinic at Wellington Civic and Leisure Centre. There are also monthly Tinnitus support sessions held in Wellington Library and quarterly meetings held by the Tinnitus Support Group in Princess Royal Hospital, Telford.

Psychic Sally Britian’s best loved psychic is on the road with her ‘Call Me Psychic’ tour and she’s bringing it back to Oakengates Theatre @ The Place at the end of September after a successful show earlier in the year. Sally Morgan is touring for her eighth consecutive year and is the UK’s most popular touring medium. Her trademark sense of fun and intrigue helps bring loved ones back to life in this interactive show that will be an unforgettable night for all. Sally’s emotional sell out theatre shows were the subject of Sky LIVING’s hugely popular television series ‘Psychic Sally: On The Road’ which followed her gruelling tour schedule showcasing her ability to speak with people beyond the grave. She has built up a dedicated following of fans who find comfort from her straight-
talking, down to earth style and bubbly personality as she demystifies the world of spirit. She is credited with bringing mediumship into the 21st Century. Sally says: “I never know what will come through which means I’m often just as surprised as the audience. “Sometimes messages are shocking, sometimes they are heart-breaking and sometimes they are just plain bizarre, but they are always entertaining and hopefully the audience will be uplifted and leave full of hope. “Simply sit back, be open-mined and make sure you come forward if you think there is a message for you. Seeing is believing!” Sally Morgan will be appearing at Oakengates Theatre @ The Place on Monday 26 September at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £25 each and can be booked online at www.theplacetelford. com by calling the box office on 01952 382382, or in person at the theatre or Southwater One in Telford Town Centre.

CHILDREN & ENTERTAINMENT
PETS:
It’s very common for puppies to chew, and it helps them to relieve the pain of teething. They also use their mouths to explore the world and its contents, but when your clothing and shoes become the target you’ll probably feel it’s time to take action. When your puppy is small, nervousness can also cause them to destructively chew anything in sight. Separation anxiety and boredom are common in dogs left alone for a period of time, so what can you do to prevent complete devastation when you return home? • Provide safe, tough items for your dog to focus on.
HOW TO STOP YOUR DOG CHEWING You can buy a range of age-appropriate durable toys and chews from pet stores and other outlets. • Restrict their access to your possessions, or limit them to a couple of rooms in the house. • Make sure they get enough exercise – this is especially important if you’re leaving them for a while, as tiredness will reduce their need to chew. Could it be attention-seeking? All dogs need quality time with their owner, and it’s possible they could be chewing simply to get your attention. If you give them plenty of play time and attention in short bursts, positively reinforcing good behaviour, you should soon see a difference. Consistency is the key to stopping unwanted chewing. Your dog will respond to rewards for chewing its own toys, and also to the negative response, e.g. withdrawing your attention for a while when your shoes are the target. http://blog.petplan.co.uk/07/2012/behaviour/how-to-stop-yourdog-chewing/ https://www.cesarsway.com/dog-behavior/destructive-chewing/5steps-to-correct-inappropriate-dog-chewing https://www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/how-control-dogschewing

Back to School Tech
THE BEST KIT TO PACK FOR YOUR KIDS
As if buying new clothes, bags and accessories wasn’t expensive enough, the back to school period also means buying gadgets - but which ones will actually benefit your child when they head to school, college or university? The right gadgets really do make a difference, but don’t rush to spend more money than you need to. Some form of computer is essential, especially for students away from home: it’s not just a tool for learning, but for communicating, music, movies and TV too. The key question today is whether a laptop or a tablet is better. Both cost around the same - unless you’re going for an Apple laptop, you can get a very good laptop for less than £400, which is around the same price as an iPad - but it’s important to check whether your child’s school, college or university has specific requirements. For example, some statistical software requires Windows, and while you can make Windows work on a Mac that involves extra expense - and it isn’t an option at all on an iPad. If you’re buying software, look for student versions: programs such as Microsoft Office come in student editions that cost a fraction of the normal price. There’s no doubt that Apple computers are the most desirable computers for students, but they’re also the most expensive ones: Apple’s cheapest laptop, the MacBook Air, starts at £749. A better option may be to buy a second-hand MacBook Pro, as the 2012 model is still current, available online for around £400 and can be upgraded with fast SSD storage for around £50. Alternatively, keep an eye out for “refurb” deals. That’s when brand new laptops have been returned for some reason, checked and put on sale again. They can’t be sold as new anymore so they attract significant discounts. The other essential, for older children at least, is a smartphone. If he or she doesn’t already have one, the best buy on the market is the Moto G4. It’s a powerful Android phone with a price tag of just £169, and it’s powerful enough to remain current for several academic years. Once you’ve got the phone you can then shop around for either a pay as you go deal, where you buy credit in advance and top it up as required, or a SIM-only deal, which is a monthly contract giving you a certain amount of data, calls and texts. Reading is a big part of the educational process, of course, and electronic books can save you a great deal of money. Amazon has just updated its Kindle range of ebook readers, and the £59.99 model is arguably the best value Kindle so far. You can spend more on Kindles with all kinds of whizzy features, but we wouldn’t. One other product you might want to consider is gadget insurance. That isn’t the same as an extended warranty, and it’s important to understand the difference: extended warranties such as Apple’s AppleCare don’t cover accidental damage such as water spills, which can easily do hundreds of pounds worth of damage to a laptop. Your home insurance or current account may already provide such insurance, but it’s worth checking the small print carefully to ensure the kids’ gadgets are covered away from home and that the excesses aren’t excessive. Lots of companies have insurance policies specifically designed for students’ computers and smartphones, and sites such as money.co.uk enable you to compare the cover, cost and excesses quickly.

Spectacular Family Fireworks See the night sky spectacularly lit up over Blists Hill Victorian Town, near Ironbridge on Saturday evening, 5th November when the townsfolk will be celebrating Guy Fawkes’ foiled Gunpowder Plot with a fantastic family fireworks display.
The gates open at 6pm allowing plenty of time to explore the Town’s Victorian streets and atmospheric buildings. As you make your way down to the Village Green for the show, you will be able talk to the townsfolk in their cottages, shops and other places of work and hear about life in the late 1800s. In the Foundry, you can see molten iron being poured into moulds during the dramatic iron casting demonstration. The highlight of the night will be the fantastic fireworks extravaganza accompanied by music, which will start at around 7.30pm and light up the night sky.

Notes from your local Ironbridge Gorge Councillor In Ironbridge Shropshire Homes have submitted their plans for the former Beeches Hospital and I am keen to ensure we obtain an appropriate development for this special listed building and protect the surrounding areas. This summer, residents, businesses and visitors were consulted on the draft Management Plan for the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. These comments will shape the vision and objectives of the management of our World Heritage Site, which seeks to safeguard and incorporate holistic planning for the WHS up to 2024. As the joint Shadow Cabinet Member for Aspiration and Prosperity, I have been working with my colleague Cllr Eric Carter (Newport South & East) to facilitate meetings between Telford Steam Railway and Telford & Wrekin Council to explore the feasibility of extending a heritage rail service into Ironbridge. We are hoping to arrange further meetings with Uniper and Shropshire Council to consider the potential of extending the rail network along with wider discussions surrounding the future use of the Ironbridge Power Station. On Saturday 17th September Ironbridge will be hosting a River Festival to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Ironbridge Gorge being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This event will involve many activities throughout Ironbridge and conclude with a stunning river procession by artists Walk the Plank. This event promises to be a truly iconic celebration and will demonstrate the beauty and cultural significance of our internationally renowned World Heritage Site.

PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP
Most Shropshire GP practices have formed a patient participation group and Shifnal is no exception. The Shifnal and Priorslee Patient Participation Group holds regular meetings with representatives of Shifnal doctors’ surgery , usually the Practice Business Manager, Sheila Maclucas and the Office Manager, Caroline Beale, approximately every 6 – 8 weeks. This is a way for patients and the surgery to work together to improve services. The staff keep the group up to date with the current staffing situation, and any other items of news, especially who the locum doctors are, and ways in which improvements to the service can be made. New members to join the group would be very welcome, and anyone interested should contact the Chair at 01952 462855 or marionlaw@tiscali.co.uk, or the Secretary sheilaoffland@ hotmail.co.uk. The group has organised a Health Information Day to be held at Shifnal Village Hall on Friday 21st October 2016 10.30am to 2.30pm when there will be information about local organisations which can help with specific health problems, and other information about helping to keep healthy. There will be local posters and promotion nearer the time.

We take immense pride in our reputation for service and commitment to our customers, with more than half of our business coming from customer recommendations to their family and friends.
...add a dash of… Quality and Value
All of our kitchens are manufactured to an exceptionally high German specification, on site, in our own factory and by our own people. That way, we have total control over the product quality, the production timescales AND the manufacturing costs. With no middle-man – you buy direct and we are able to pass these time and cost savings directly onto our customers.
…then a big chunk of…
Ownership and Responsibility
Unusual in this insincere world, admittedly. But we mean it. We are totally committed to providing you with the best kitchen, at the best price, installed with the highest level of service and professionalism. And on the exceptionally rare occasion that something could have been done better – we hold our hands up – and put it right. Fast. No fuss. No hassle. No argument. Just sorted.
...a soupçon of…Harmony At The Kitchen Depot, we know that we are only as good as our people. They ARE The Kitchen Depot brand. That’s why we look after our staff every bit as well as we look after our customers. Because we know that happy workers, pulling together in harmony, make for happy customers.
