FINDING THE BEST PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SHROPSHIRE

The Bridge Lower Bar, Newport TF10 7BJ

T: 01952 324481

The Bridge Inn is situated just off the main High Street in Lower Bar, Newport and with a recent makeover on the outside of the building it certainly stands out as you pass through the centre of Newport. The new owner, Michael Smylie took over about a year ago and has worked hard to revamp the building both inside and out. As you enter there is a lovely snug area with comfy seating by the inglenook fireplace. As you head towards the rear of the building you are greeted by the impressive well stocked bar and if you continue past the bar you will reach the lower ground dining area with its vaulted ceiling and exposed brickwork, where further seating is available. We were seated just past the bar area next to a window looking out onto the courtyard. Our drinks order was promptly taken, Nik chose a glass of Malbec and I thought I would try one of the many gins on offer, the grapefruit and coconut gin was a great choice! As well as the main menu there was also a specials board with a varied selection of main courses including fish dishes and vegetarian options. For starters Nik chose the Devilled Whitebait and I ordered the Ham Hock Terrine. The Devilled Whitebait was served with salad, tartare sauce and a wedge of lemon. Nik said the whitebait had a beautifully light crispy coating with a hint of spice from the paprika, a wonderful starter. My Ham Hock Terrine had lovely chunky pieces of ham and came with two slices of toast, a mixed crispy salad and a delicious apple chutney. I chose my main meal from the specials board which was the Chicken Breast in a red wine sauce and Nik selected the Beef Short Rib off the main menu.

6

FOOD & ENTERTAINMENT The succulent chicken breast had a tasty crisp skin and was served with new potatoes, a lovely mix of vegetables including green beans, mange tout and baby carrots, there was also a mushroom and red wine sauce which worked perfectly with this dish.

The Bridge Inn is the only Free House locally and stocks a good selection of real ales, draught lagers, wine, spirits and plenty of soft drinks, Michael said, "I am delighted to be an independent outlet and not tied to any breweries." Children are welcome here and although there is no childrens menu they can order smaller portions off the menu.

Nik's slow roasted beef short rib was melt in the mouth tender and the meat just fell away from the bone, it was served with an intensley rich gravy, creamy mashed potatoes, sweet baby carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and green beans, a great hearty main course.

On Sundays the full menu is available and there is always a couple of roasts to choose from on the specials board. At lunchtimes there is also a range of sandwiches to choose from, as well as the main menu.

We just about had room for a dessert and I ordered the Raspberry Roulade and Nik chose the Cherry Bakewell Tart.

Food is served Wednesday to Saturday between 12:00-2:30pm at lunchtimes and evenings between 5:00-9:30pm and also on Sundays between 12-6pm.

The roulade had a lovely light textured meringue with a slight crispness to the outside and the raspberry sauce, strawberries and blueberries added a lovely sweetness to the dish.

There is a great range of food available which is priced very reasonably, so is great value for money. Pop in and try it for yourself but it would be best to book a table in advance to save any disappointment!

Nik enjoyed his Cherry Bakewell Tart which was wonderfully moist and packed with juicy cherries and sliced almonds and was served with a light vanilla custard.

Recipe

CHOCOLATE AND ORANGE PUDDINGS Chocolate and orange are perfect flavour partners and these lovely individual puddings taste delicious served warm with custard or cream. Makes 6 Ready in 1 hour 30 mins

INGREDIENTS: • 3 small clementines or satsumas, thinly sliced • 175g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 175g caster sugar • 3 large eggs, beaten • 125g self-raising flour • 50g cocoa powder, sifted • 1 tbsp fresh orange juice • 2 tsp orange zest • Custard or cream, to serve

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C, fan 160°C, gas mark 4. Butter and line the bases of 6 x 175ml metal pudding basins with circles of baking parchment. Place a slice of clementine or satsuma in the base of each basin and press 2-3 slices around the sides. 2. Put the butter and sugar in a bowl and, using an electric mixer, beat until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs then sift over the flour and cocoa powder and fold into the creamed mixture with the orange juice and zest. 3. Divide the mixture between the pudding basins and cover each with a square of pleated, buttered foil, scrunching it tightly around the sides of each basin. Transfer to a roasting tin and pour in enough boiling water from a kettle to reach halfway up the sides of the basins. 4. Bake for 1 hour, until the puddings have risen and are firm to the touch, and a skewer inserted through the foil of one of the puddings comes out clean. Turn out and serve with custard or cream.

TIP You can cook the puddings a few hours before serving then simply re-heat in the microwave. Turn out onto a microwave plate and reheat three at a time on High for 3045 seconds.

Government Schemes

FOR FIRST-TIME BUYERS AND EXISTING HOMEOWNERS Shared Ownership Eligibility You may be eligible for the Shared Ownership scheme if your annual household income is £80,000 or less (£90,000 or less in London) and: • This is your first home. • You have been a homeowner, but are now unable to afford a property.

If you are an existing homeowner wanting to move up the property ladder, or are looking to buy your first home, a number of government schemes could help you make that investment. From boosting your savings for a deposit to buying a share in a property, take a look below at the main government initiatives to find one that suit your circumstances.

Help to Buy ISA Eligibility • First-time buyers only. • Purchase price of up to £250,000 (£450,000 in London). • You must live in the property. • It must be your only home. How it works The government boosts your Help to Buy ISA savings by 25%, up to a maximum of £3,000, so for every £100 you save into the ISA you will receive an additional £25 from the government. If you and a partner are saving for your first home together, you can each open a Help to Buy ISA and take advantage of a savings boost of up to £6,000 in total.

Equity Loan (in England) Eligibility • Applies to new-builds only. • First-time buyers and existing homeowners may be eligible. • Property purchase price up to £600,000 in England. • You must live in the property, and not sub-let it. • It must be your only property. • The home must be purchased from a registered Help to Buy builder.

• You already use the shared ownership scheme. How it works You purchase between 25% and 75% of the property outright and pay a subsidised rent on the outstanding portion. You may be able to purchase more shares until you own the whole property, and the rent is reduced proportionately.

Starter Home Scheme The Starter Home scheme is the latest government initiative to help first-time buyers in England onto the property ladder. Although not yet fully up and running, these are the latest eligibility criteria and details known. Eligibility • First-time buyers aged between 23 and 40. • Maximum household income of £80,000 (£90,000 in London). • Must have a mortgage. • There will be restrictions on the resale or letting of the property for 15 years after purchase. How it works The government is offering a minimum discount of 20% on a property’s market value, so purchasers will need a mortgage of up to 80%. The purchase price after the discount can be up to £250,000 (£450,000 in London). Starter homes under this scheme will be exempt from the Community Infrastructure Levy, which house builders normally have to pay to local authorities. What has caused a housing crisis in recent years? A rise in the UK population, falling numbers of new-build properties and high prices in certain areas of the country have all combined to create a dire need for affordable housing. If you are in this situation, hopefully one of these schemes will help you on to the property ladder sooner rather than later. www.helptobuy.gov.uk

• You cannot use a part-exchange deal on your old home.

www.ownyourhome.gov.uk/scheme/starter-homes

Also known as shared equity, you own your home using the equity loan scheme, purchasing a proportion of the property up front with the remainder being paid back over a pre-agreed term.

Kate Coleman Company Secretary

Gill Coleman Founder

Jeff Coleman Founder

Coleman Estates, 25 Church Street, Wellington, TF1 1DG

Call: 01952 244 990 www.colemanestates.com

Hello from Coleman Estates in Sunny Wellington! So much for the traditional ‘quiet summer months’ - At Coleman Estates, we agreed 16 sales between the end of June and the end of July making us the top selling branch of estate agents in Telford as well as letting 17 properties in our letting department! No mean feat considering that we seem to have had the annual rainfall of Seattle in the past month (Obvious observation of the month: if it rains, people tend to cancel their viewings). So how is the property sales market in general? Due to available stock being at a 40 year low, we are achieving a high number of sales with many asking price offers with unprecedented demand for all types of property - simply put, it is a sellers market! In my opinion, this could do with correcting with more property coming on to the market, offering more choice and stabilising house prices. High selling prices sound great on paper... unless you’re upsizing or god forbid, moving south within an hour and a half of London (think 2-3 bed semi / terrace depending on area in exchange for your nice four bed detached in Priorslee). This brings me onto a question that I am frequently asked at the moment:

‘Should I put my house on the market when we haven’t found anywhere we want to buy yet?’

The answer is a resounding ‘YES!’ for two reasons: - As a vendor, the ball is in your court in today’s market; unless we agree a sale to a buyer with a long chain (rarer and rarer these days thankfully) your buyer will usually be very understanding that you will need 4-6 weeks to find a new property. You’re our client - we work to your timescale. If you can’t find somewhere in this timeframe, most buyers will wait (due to a lack of alternative choice) or we can remarket and begin again. - The second reason hits even closer to home: Take two examples we sold in Priorslee recently; Carlton Drive, which sold for the full asking price when a hawkeyed buyer spotted our board and Highgrove Meadows which sold for the full asking price within 3 days of marketing. By the time we arrange professional photography, your EPC and floorplan, the property you had your eye on is under offer. The bottom line is that if you’re not on the market, you are going to miss out time and time again. My advice would be to be brave, to take the plunge and trust our experienced team to help you move into your dream home. In our next instalment, we look forward to an indepth analysis of the letting market and advice for landlords from our Lettings Director, Kate Coleman – until then, enjoy this wonderful weather we’re experiencing and remember to call Coleman Estates if you’re looking to sell or let your property.

When should you put your house on the market? Brought to you by James Carlon James Carlon Co Author of ‘THE TELFORD PROPERTY BLOG’

There is a growing trend in Telford of people getting stuck in between selling their home and buying a new one. I am going out to see lots of people who want to move, are happy with their valuation, but will not go on the market until they have found somewhere to move to. And that can present a problem.

“If your house isn’t even on the market when you find your ideal new home, you are in a pretty poor bargaining position from the outset.” You will potentially be under pressure to pay the full asking price on your chosen home to persuade the seller to hold it while you sell yours.

14

And you will then be quite likely to be ready to accept a low offer on your home because you will need to sell quickly. What often happens in these circumstances is that you end up missing out on your ideal home because the seller accepts a rival offer from someone who was ready to move. Sellers see it as chicken and egg, but you might not even get the chance to view some of the prime new instructions if your house is not on the market because some vendors will turn you away. So best to get on the market early! For more advice about buying and selling property in Shropshire, give me a call or drop me an email. Questions to ask a future tenant...

Brought to you by Dawn Clarke Dawn Clarke Co Author of ‘THE TELFORD PROPERTY BLOG’

For a landlord, getting the right tenant is almost as important as getting the right property - and getting the wrong tenant can prove to be a costly mistake.

“Asking the right kinds of questions when interviewing potential tenants is a great way of ensuring you make the right decision.“ Here are some good questions to ask… 1. Why are you moving? It’s a simple question but one which can yield a lot of useful information about the circumstances of your potential tenant. Ideally you want a valid reason like needing more room or changing jobs rather than being evicted from their last property…

16

2. What is your income? It may seem like a personal question, but as a landlord you need to be confident that they will be able to afford the rent every month. If you would rather not ask about income directly, you could instead ask for their occupation, as this would also give you a good indication of their finances. 3. Do you have any questions? Giving your potential tenant the opportunity to ask questions themselves can be a great way of establishing exactly what kind of property they want - and whether or not yours is suitable. For more information or advise about property management and investment opportunities in Telford, please call or drop me an email.

INSPIRED BY COLOUR

Everything changed from the early 19th century, however, when chemists, spurred on by the industrialisation of textile production, began to develop synthetic colours, and the price of ‘colour’ began to fall. Many new colours were developed and old ones were improved – though there were exceptions. Emerald Green, for example, commercially available from 1814 to the early 1900s, was based on arsenic, and fumes from wallpaper – including designs by William Morris – printed with the ink could be deadly. The new Victorian palette included bottle greens, gold, burgundy, crimson, rose, violet and mahogany, as well as intense chemical yellows, blues and greens, the results of the invention of aniline dye colours used first for wallpapers and textiles, and then for paints. Stronger colours were mostly used for rooms deemed ‘important’ (not to mention the ABOVE: Plushious quilted and hand-embroidered bedspread in velvet by Linum, £320, fact that deeper colours helped to hide the The French Bedroom Company: 01444 415 430; frenchbedroomcompany.co.uk. soot produced by oil lamps), while white and lighter colours were considered more appropriate for bedrooms.

The story of colour is the story of society, of fashion, of the way we live, of science, of art – in fact, of mankind itself. We look at all aspects of colour, from its history to this year’s most fashionable shades. Did you know that there was a time when green wallpaper could kill you? Or that a very expensive dye was once made from boiled snails? But first, the early history. It was back in the Palaeolithic era - about 35,000 years ago - that Stone Age man began to create cave paintings in which earth pigments were mixed with resin, water or glue made from animal bones and hides. For many centuries, the most widely used natural pigments were extracted from soil and rocks, plants, insects (cochineal, for example) and animals (the distinctive Suffolk pink was made by diluting whitewash with bull’s blood). Ash and chalk were also basics; at a price, however, it was possible for strong, bright pigments or dyes to be extracted from other sources. Ultramarine blue, for example, came from ground lapis lazuli gemstones, and was once more expensive than gold (hence in art it was often reserved for painting the robes of Mary and the infant Christ), while Tyrian purple required 10,000 boiled snails to produce one gram of dye, and was employed for fabrics worn only by kings, queens and emperors. Historically, the use of colour was governed by its ease of availability – and therefore its cost. The richest colours were always reserved for the most important parts of religious and royal interiors. In the Georgian period, the ‘common’ colours that were affordable and widely available included stone and timber colours, greys and whites – in the form of distemper and white lead. Middle class households would often use the slightly more expensive oil colours such as ‘drab’ (dull brownish grey), olive, pea green and sky blue. More expensive paints included pink, lemon, orange and straw colour, while the most costly were verdigris, ultramarine and smalt, a glittering blue. It was household income, on the whole, rather than personal taste, which determined how colourful a home could be.

22

In a reaction to these bold Victorian colours, perhaps unsurprisingly, Edwardian hues became softer and paler and, ever since, colour has followed the roller-coaster of fashion as well as inevitable scientific advances: from the ‘greeneryyallery’ of the Aesthetic movement to the brilliant white produced by the introduction of titanium dioxide in 1916, and from the sorbet colours of the Fifties right through to the ontrend pinks, blues and greens of 2017. These days, ready-made paint colours are inspired by historical periods, fashion themes, travel, architecture, the natural world – or you can have them specially mixed to any hue you desire. It’s fair to say that the modern world of colour has no limits.

by Katherine Sorrell

What are this year’s most fashionable colours? GREENERY: Colour authority Pantone’s colour of

2017, Greenery is described as ‘a fresh and zesty yellowgreen shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew’. Greenery is ideal for adding pops of colour in the form of cushions, cupboard fronts or vases. It also lends itself beautifully to the botanicals trend that’s so hot right now.

MILLENNIAL PINK:

Also known as Tumblr Pink and Scandi Pink, Millennial Pink is a soft, dusky pink that was inspired by Wes Anderson’s film The Grand Budapest Hotel and the rose gold iPhone. It’s been called gender-neutral and post-pretty, and it’s literally everywhere.

DENIM DRIFT:

Dulux’s colour of the year for 2017, Denim Drift is versatile and easy to use in every room of the house, from kitchen cupboards and soft furnishings to floor coverings and entire walls. It’s easy to co-ordinate with, too.

Eco Chic

AT HOME

Being an eco-warrior doesn’t have to be a battle. With just a little thought and effort, you can decorate your home beautifully without harming the planet. Can ‘going green’ ever be stylish? Of course! While you might start with some basics, such as switching to LED light bulbs, insulating your loft or lagging your boiler, the end of your journey could be a chic, sophisticated home that’s filled with furnishings that are natural, sustainable and durable – in other words, minimising harm to the planet. From floors to ceilings, fabrics to accessories, small changes in your choices can create big eco-transformations. First, think about your priorities - because there are plenty of different ways to help the environment. Should you aim to be low carbon, non-toxic or energy efficient? Renewable, fair trade, locally sourced, organic or simply ‘natural’? The answer is not always obvious (and you will need to try very hard to satisfy every criteria) but some simple research will help you weigh up your options. Look out for labels, such as FSC to show that timber has been responsibly sourced, or Goodweave that tells you that a rug has not been woven by a child. Ask where things come from, what they contain, how they have been made. Buy from a specialist retailer who can demonstrate their green credentials, look out for reclaimed, recycled or upcycled products, or buy antique or vintage pieces – they are often very well made, can be breathtakingly good-looking and are certainly long-lasting; many would argue that they are the greenest of all, being the ultimate in recycling. Try to think less about all the things you think you need, and ask yourself instead what you really don’t need. The three rules of green living are, first, to reduce what you use; second, to reuse what you can; and third, to recycle as much as possible. So, rather than getting rid of things carelessly, consider how you could adapt them and give them another life. Perhaps you could re-cover that comfortable, perfectly sized old sofa instead of buying a new one, clad the top of an old table with a thin sheet of marble, or repaint a boring kitchen chair with a special effect, for example. When you do buy new, you may want to support local artisans or businesses (reducing your carbon footprint in terms of import miles, too), or fair trade, co-operative or social

initiatives overseas, which ensure fair pay and conditions for their workers. And it is well worth investigating eco choices for virtually everything around the house – from natural floorings such as sisal, cork, Marmoleum or wool carpets, to alternatives to cotton (which uses huge amounts of fresh water and pesticides) such as linen, hemp and alpaca. How much harm does a product cause to the environment during its production, and what toxins does it contain? Chemicals in paint, fabrics, synthetic carpets, plywood furniture and other man-made materials may ‘off gas’ for years, doing no one much good – another excellent reason to check the labelling. Lastly, always bear in mind the beauty of natural materials, from oak and slate to bamboo and linen, in terms of both colour and texture. Subtle shades of browns, greys and off-whites, and tactile appeal that ranges from super-soft to satisfyingly knobbly – everything works together without your having to try too hard, and they will age gracefully, too, adding gentle good looks to your home for a long time to come.

WHAT THE LABELS MEAN FSC The Forest Stewardship Council logo on wood products shows they have been produced from responsibly grown timber. Goodweave The label is an assurance that no child labour was used in the making of your rug. C2C Cradle to Cradle certification is a detailed appraisal of products throughout their life cycle. Low VOC Low in potentially hazardous emissions called volatile organic compounds (most often found on paint tins). EU Eco-label A flower symbol that can be used by goods and services which have a lighter environmental footprint than similar products performing the same function. Fairtrade The Fairtrade Mark is awarded to products that meet international Fairtrade standards, including meeting the welfare of employers and environmental standards. The Mobius Loop The symbol showing three arrows chasing each other in a triangle shape is an internationally recognised recycling symbol. Energy Efficiency The Energy Efficiency logo identifies produces which save or use less energy.

Houseplants This year I didn’t get a summer holiday but I’m proud to say that my houseplants did – no need for costly air fares or overpriced hotels and dodgy meals out however, because they spent the summer in the garden. Most houseplants grown widely up and down the country need to be just that, plants in houses, but come the summer it usually gives them a real boost to get the higher natural light levels, refreshing (relatively warm) rainfall and seriously fresh air. But now that September is here it is time to bring them indoors. The daytime temperatures are generally warm enough in almost all areas of the country but there will soon be some noticeably nippy nights and these can do untold damage, especially to some of the more tender varieties. Before bringing them in though, it is essential to put your plants through their paces; think of it as being a bit like going through Customs on your way back from your seasonal break! First I go over them checking for dead, damaged or dying leaves, and then use a sharp pair of scissors to remove these, cutting back neatly into clean, healthy growth. Next it is time to inspect the stems, foliage and any flowers for pests and diseases. There is often a wide range of these problems that can infest or infect your houseplants, and it always pays to bring them in totally clean. Look out for white powdery mildew deposits, often accompanied by a bit of leaf yellowing, and check for greyish fuzzy fungal patches caused by the notorious Botrytis or grey mould - this will often start out on an already dead part of the plant such as a faded leaf or flower, but is often associated with yellowing, petal browning and dieback too. Also look for pests like scale insects - tiny brownish elliptical insects which feed beneath leaves or on soft stems, often producing copious quantities of sticky, sugary honeydew - or aphids, which may be found clustered on the more tender, newer growth. If you find any infestation, it is essential it is dealt with before the plants go inside, as once the pots are back indoors the pests will flourish in the now warmer and more protected conditions, and will soon multiply and may even spread to other healthy plants, causing potential chaos! Most problems like these, if caught early, can be dealt with by using a sharp pair of scissors or secateurs to snip off infected areas, or by some careful picking off by hand. If you find scale insects, aphids or fluffy patches of mealy bug, you can purchase a brilliant biocontrol to sort them out in a totally environmentally friendly way that is also completely safe for you and your pets. For more information, visit www.pippagreenwood.com/ products/protect-your-crops.

32

GO HOME

Once the plants themselves have had a check over, I always inspect the pots, including the surface of the compost and beneath the base and rim of the pot itself. If you can, and as long as the plant won’t be damaged in the process, gently ease it out of its pot and check the root ball. This may sound a little extreme but all of these more ‘hidden’ and out of the way places provide perfect places for stowaways: the pests which live in the garden but would appreciate spending the cooler weather in your house - things like vine weevils, slugs and snails. Not the sort of house guests you or your plants would appreciate, I’m sure. When the check over is complete, gently scrape away the uppermost surface of the compost and replace with the same quantity of fresh, similar compost, wipe down the sides of the pot and take your plants inside, taking care not to put them anywhere which is too hot, too dry or too draughty for their liking. Once your old favourites are safely re-installed in their old positions and are free from unwanted guests, you may like to treat yourself to a new houseplant or two. There are some wonderful (and amazingly good value) houseplants readily available in garden centres now and you’ll often find some gems in the supermarket too - how about a marvellously elegant moth orchid (Phalaenopsis) or two? I treated myself to a couple when I was working at The Woburn Abbey Garden Show this summer, and they’ve proved to be a beautiful reminder of a lovely show and I know that even with my sometimes erratic care they should keep on performing for years to come! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for her ‘Winter thru’ Spring Collection’ of gorgeous UK-grown gardenready vegetable plants ready for delivery in September. You’ll also find many gardening items including growing frames, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, Nemaslug and other nematode controls, copper tape, pull-out EasyTunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

It's Not Always Good Water features are great in a garden but the chances are that from time to time you will have been frustrated by the water turning green. Generally, this will be due to one of many different types of algae infestation, and will get worse during warmer weather, but what should you do about it?

Blanket weed is long filaments of tangled algae, making a mass resembling a dense green blanket. Remove by pulling, raking or by using a stick or bamboo cane that you twirl into the algae, then compost it down in your compost bin. Surface floating pond weeds such as duckweed, which looks like lots of very tiny oval leaves floating on the water’s surface, can be a real nightmare too. It builds up very rapidly as a bright green surface layer and the best control is to regularly scrape the weed off using a good-sized kitchen sieve. Again it can be composted, but make sure you remove all of it or it will soon be back. Try to avoid the build-up of algae by creating your pond carefully and taking precautions with what you grow and keep in it. Avoid a very sunny position, as lots of sunlight increases the algal growth. Bear in mind, however, that a pond close to trees will become clogged by leaves in autumn! Make sure that the pond is as deep as possible, as algal growth is much more likely in shallow water, and avoid putting in too many fish as their excreta raises the water’s nitrogen level, which encourages algae. Surface floating plants,

TO BE GREEN particularly water lilies, will help to shade the water’s surface - ideal if the pond is in a fairly sunny site. You should also include a selection of oxygenating plants, available from your local garden centre or pond plant supplier. Some of these float in bundles in the water, others can be grown in containers, and all of them help raise the oxygen level in the pond and so decrease the algae problem. A spout or fountain will also oxygenate the water, but note that water lilies do not like water that is in motion.

Note that if you keep changing the water in an attempt to keep it clear, the pond never gets the chances to create its own natural balance and the situation will not improve. Be patient and usually, provided you try all the above, the pond will eventually sort itself out and clear water will return. You can use proprietary physical and chemical controls for algae, but make sure that whatever you choose is suitable and can be used safely around wildlife and your pond fish. Using barley straw to clear algae in ponds does work, but it is essential that the straw is from barley and no other cereal crop. If you can get hold of this, cram some into an old pair of tights and submerge in the water by weighing them down with several bricks. Alternatively, buy pads of barley straw (sometimes mixed with lavender stalks), and these will help do the job for you. Gardeners In Glass Houses

so skinny you’d struggle to get through them if you were carrying anything heavy or bulky. If possible choose one wide enough for you to push a wheelbarrow through with ease – this will make jobs such as changing the border soil or just bringing in compost so much easier. A greenhouse should be erected on a solid base perhaps paving slabs, concrete or bricks - or on a skirt or surround of paving or concrete. The choice needs to be made at the outset, and your supplier will be able to advise on what is best for the greenhouse you choose. I prefer to have a solid path up the centre of the greenhouse (essential for practicality) and then an open bed up one or both sides. The advantage of a bed is that you can fill it full of quality soil and plant directly into it, making maintenance of crops such as tomatoes an awful lot easier. A solid base means you will need to grow greenhouse crops in containers.

If you can possibly squeeze a greenhouse in to your garden, it’ll be a purchase you won’t regret. A greenhouse will literally transform your gardening activities and open up a whole new range of possibilities - but what should you get and where should you put it? A greenhouse needs to be sited well away from large trees. These not only make for shady conditions that will reduce light getting to the plants inside the greenhouse, but falling branches or other tree debris also increase the risk of damage to the glass as well as the guttering becoming clogged. If you are going to want to install electrical equipment such as heating, lighting or even some electrically heated propagators, bear in mind that the further the greenhouse is from the house or other existing supply, the more expensive it will be to install underground armoured cable. So what size should you go for? The answer is simple, larger than you might expect! Pretty well whatever the size of greenhouse you get, you can be sure you will eventually wish it was larger. Most of the initial costs rise by a relatively small amount as the size of the greenhouse increases, so save up a little longer if necessary. But any greenhouse is better than none, so if space or budget only allow for a 4ft x 4ft, then still go for it!

When you’re placing the order, try to get some greenhouse staging in your greenhouse. This is usually made from wood or metal and is slatted, making a perfect place to stand seed trays, pots and propagators. Most greenhouses are fitted with horticultural grade glass but there are other options; if the garden is used by children, you may decide to do as I did and install safety glass or reinforced glass to reduce the risk of a tragic accident – especially likely at the base of the greenhouse. Plastic, polythene or corrugated plastic ‘glazing’ are also available from some outlets; these are generally lower cost and less of a potential hazard - but check how long they are designed to last, and think about how they will look too. If possible consider some really useful extras, including: shading (necessary to help to keep temperatures down in the sunnier months and to reduce the risk of plant damage); guttering and a linked in water-butt (a brilliant way to have a handy water supply without elaborate plumbing, and the green option too); and an electrical supply (expensive and must be installed by a properly qualified and registered electrician, but allows electrical heating, lighting, fans and installation of a heated propagator). My Top Reasons for Getting a Greenhouse: •

It allows you to grow a wider range of crops with ease.

It provides a longer growing season, giving shelter at both ends of the season.

Most greenhouses have a frame made from wood or metal (most commonly aluminium). Which you choose will really depend on personal preference: many prefer the look of wood, but it will need regular maintenance unless it is western red cedar. Whichever you choose, make sure it is sturdily constructed, especially if you live in a wind-prone area.

You will be able to raise a lot of plants from seed yourself, so saving money.

It will dramatically reduce the risk of problems such as tomato blight.

Plants get plenty of natural light and so are more likely to thrive.

In the height of summer a greenhouse will soon heat up, and temperatures can rise to the extent that plants will be damaged or even killed. Plenty of ventilation helps to reduce the temperature and also allows for better air circulation, so reducing problems with plant diseases etc. Consider roof vents as well, which aid air circulation and are an especially efficient way to let excess heat escape.

It makes a perfect gardener’s hide-away!

Make sure that the doorway to your greenhouse is wide enough for easy access. Occasionally you see some that are

Who Needs to Run

WHEN YOU CAN WALK?

It’s my first time with a local Nordic walking group, and no matter how hard I try, I remain at the back of the line while my companions steam on ahead. When we stop I am more than slightly out of breath and deeply apologetic about lagging so far behind. The others laugh at my serious expression, telling me that most ‘newbies’ quickly learn to keep up, once they have mastered the simple technique required. My fellow walkers come from different backgrounds and are of varying heights, ages and fitness levels. However, all are unanimous in their praise of Nordic Walking. As we sit and chat over a cup of coffee at the end of the session, they tell me about the transformational effect walking has had on their lives, from aiding recovery after a hip operation to helping with weight loss.

Although thirty minutes is the ideal length of time for a daily walk, Dr I-Min Lee, a professor at Harvard Medical School, suggests starting with three ten minute walks each day, then building up to the full 30 minutes when you feel more confident.

Walking the Nordic Way

The right way to walk

Nordic Walking originally began as a summer training regime for cross-country skiers. In order to walk the Nordic way, you use poles that engage your arms and upper body, propelling you forward. This removes pressure from the knees, making you feel much lighter on your feet; that’s the reason why Nordic Walking is often taken up by people who have undergone a hip replacement operation. It’s recommended that you learn the technique required from a qualified instructor, and you can find lists at either nordicwalking. co.uk (call 01392 956 856) or britishnordicwalking.org.uk (call 01446 773 876). Classes range from gentle walks for people with health concerns to workout walks designed to improve fitness, encourage weight loss and tone the body. Most instructors will provide the poles required; other than that, all you need is good walking shoes and appropriate, weatherproof clothing.

Why walking is good for health However, if you’re not keen on striding out with the help of poles, a reasonably brisk conventional walk can do you almost as much good. The UK Chief Medical Officer’s guidelines on physical activity recommend that adults participate in 150 minutes of “moderate intensity, aerobic, physical activity” every week, which breaks down to thirty minutes of exercise per day, five days per week. If every person in the UK followed the CMO’s recommendations, it would save 37,000 lives each year and lead to around 300,000 fewer cases of type 2 diabetes. The health benefits are even greater for heart patients. Research carried out by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California discovered that brisk walking was more effective than running in reducing the risk of heart disease. What’s more, the benefits of walking aren’t limited to physical health. The mental health charity “Mind” claims that countryside walks can raise self-esteem and reduce depression, and most doctors agree that exercise can improve sleep patterns.

38

It’s vital to maintain a good posture when you walk, so tighten your stomach muscles and keep your spine straight, with shoulders relaxed and your chin parallel to the ground, trying not to lean too far forward or too far back. Let your arms swing naturally and use the whole of your foot as you walk, rolling from heel to toe. Good shoes will improve stability and allow your feet to bend naturally: they should be made of waterproof material, with a thick heel (to absorb the shock as your heel contacts the ground) and flexible soles. Also look out for an Achilles notch: a little dip cut into the back, designed to relieve stress on the Achilles tendon. Walkers should always be aware of any potential hazards in their path, but don’t be tempted to look down at your feet, as this will alter the alignment of your spine. Casting your gaze just a few feet ahead allows you to keep your head upright whilst still looking out for trip hazards or muddy puddles. Although figures released by the RAC Foundation suggest that pedestrian casualties on our roads are reducing year on year, it is sensible to take precautions if part of your walking route includes a public highway. The Highway Code advises walkers to keep to the right-hand side of the road so they can see oncoming traffic, but to temporarily cross over before a sharp right-hand bend in order to remain visible to traffic. Wearing high visibility clothing or reflective materials at night or in murky conditions will also help car drivers see you. Back at home, after my first Nordic walking session, I’m aware that my body has had a thorough workout and I look forward to soaking in a hot bath as a reward for all that exercise. Next time I see a runner I won’t feel my usual pang of guilt that I’m not out there as well, with my heart racing and my feet pounding the tarmac. I’ve found my ideal form of exercise, and it’s as simple as putting one foot in front of the other.

Telford Tigers

SEMI-PROFESSIONAL ICE HOCKEY TEAM

Telford has seen many changes over the last 50 years but did you know that there has been a semiprofessional ice hockey team in the town since 1985?

There is much more to the club than the top two teams however, as junior hockey in Telford is the real key to the future of the Tigers and continues to nurture stars of the future. Age groups range from learn to play, Under 9’s through to Under 18’s.

Well, the Telford Tigers are still going strong and start their league campaign in a revamped league at the start of September. Tigers are an ice hockey club with two teams playing in the National Ice Hockey Leagues (NIHL) 1 & 2 respectively.

Over the years the junior hockey system has produced a steady stream of local talent, including Rick Plant, 7 time league winner in the EPL as well current senior players Adam Taylor, Josh Hustwick, Ben Washburn and recently Brodie Jesson.

In 2014/2015, Telford Tigers won the English Premier League (EPL) title by some distance, before collecting the British Challenge Cup in a thrilling final against Manchester Phoenix. The 2016 /2017 saw some considerable additions to the previous years team and Tigers once again won the EPL. 2017 / 2018 sees the start of a brand new chapter with a ‘One Club Two Teams’ brand as the club competes in division 1&2 in the NIHL North. Under the guidance of Head Coach and General Manager, former Great Britain player Tom Watkins, Tigers will be one of the teams expected to challenge for silverware.

A number of the juniors have recently been recognised with national honours, including Grace Garbett and Teagan Hyatt, who were invited to training camp with the England Girls School of Excellence and U18’s players Brodie Jesson, Henry Adams and Dan Mitchell invited for a trial with GB. From the learn to play program to the Tigers first team, the club are community focused, looking to encourage people of both sexes and all ages to come along and join in, try out the sport or just cheer on all the teams and players as they compete for silverware this season in a fun and family friendly atmosphere. Older People Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin is urging people aged 60 plus to think ahead to the colder winter months by offering free home energy checks. The local charity that supports older people across the county has secured some funding to offer a free advisory service which will help to make homes warmer and could save money on heating bills. Being cold can be particularly dangerous for older people with Shropshire having one of the highest death rates in the country in colder weather - every year 285 people die from cold-related causes. The local company working with Age UK STW say it’s not just about keeping warm as improved insulation can also keep us cool during the summer months. Phil Newcombe, Project Manager of Marches Energy Agency, said: “The people I visit are finding the home energy checks an interesting and enjoyable opportunity to think about how their homes work for them. This can be about keeping cool in the summer as well as warm in the winter.

URGED TO THINK AHEAD TO WINTER WARMTH WITH A FREE HOME ENERGY CHECK

Improved insulation of your home can also help to keep the heat out. Some people have been keen to change energy providers or tariffs, others have benefitted from draught proofing of doors and windows. Other householders have needed help with installing new heating systems and insulation or urgent action on damp and mould or fuel debts.’’ Heather Osborne, Chief Executive of Age UK STW, said: “With all this warm weather we’ve been having it’s difficult for us to think about the colder months, but the home energy check only takes an hour. We are not trying to sell anything, we simply want to offer impartial advice about how to reduce your energy bills and make your home as energy efficient as possible. The scheme was extremely popular in 2016 so I am really pleased we are rolling it out for another year. Last year we visited a number of older people who were desperate for help to reduce their energy bills but didn’t know where to turn, so please do pick up the phone and talk to us.” If you would like a free Home Energy Check call Age UK Shropshire Telford & Wrekin on 01743 233123.

ORGAN DONATION WEEK

Organ Donation Week (previously called National Transplant Week) takes place from Monday 4th to Sunday 10th September this year. This awareness week is vital because organ donation is a subject still mired in myths and misunderstandings. People are reluctant to talk about organ donation because it’s linked with death. Yet it’s possible to be a ‘living donor’ – and organ donation is also linked with saving lives. That life could be yours or that of a loved one. 96% of us would take an organ if needed. Yet only 29% of us are on the Organ Donor Register. “People waiting for transplants depend on people being willing to donate their organs and sadly, on average, three people die every day across the UK due to a shortage of donated organs,” says Sally Johnson, Director of Organ Donation and Transplantation for NHS Blood and Transplant.

The Need for Donations A big promotional push meant that between 2007/08 and 2012/13, the number of deceased donors had increased by 50% and the number of transplants by 30.5%. But there are still not enough donors. As I write this in June 2017, there are 6,342 people on the UK national transplant waiting list and 740 people have received a transplant since 1st April. During the last financial year, over 400 people died whilst on the waiting list. Sadly, even if someone is a registered organ donor, their organs can’t always be used. Fewer than 6,000 of the 50,000 people who die in the UK every year die in circumstances where they can become a donor.

Which Organs and Tissues Can Be Donated? The most commonly transplanted organs are the heart, kidney, lungs and liver. But the pancreas and small bowel can be transplanted too. Tissues such as corneas, heart valves, skin, bone and tendons can also be donated and used.

Who Can Register as an Organ Donor – and Who Can Donate? Joining the Register expresses a wish to help others by donating organs for transplantation after death, but importantly, joining the Register also gives legal consent or authorisation for donation to take place. Everyone who is considered legally competent can join the NHS Organ Donor Register, irrespective of age and health. However: • Children can register, but their parents or those with parental responsibility will be asked for their consent if donation is considered after the child’s death. However, if a child aged 12 or over registers in Scotland, a parent or guardian can’t legally overrule their wishes. • You cannot become an organ donor if you have these conditions: HIV (although you may be able to donate to another person who has HIV); Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD); Cancer that has spread in the last 12 months. Donation of organs usually takes place after brain stem death (permanent loss of brain activity and potential for

42

consciousness and breathing) or circulatory death (irreversible loss of heart and lung function after a cardiac arrest from which the patient cannot or should not be resuscitated, or the planned withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment). However, during the last financial year there were more living donors than deceased donors from either of these groups. So, what’s living donation about?

Living Donation In 2016/17, 950 people acted as living donors. Living donors can donate a kidney, a small part of their liver, discarded bone from a replacement operation or amniotic tissue (from the placenta). If you have had a planned caesarean, you can also donate blood from the umbilical cord when your baby is born. Stem cells from this blood can help to treat life-threatening diseases such as leukaemia, lymphoma, bone marrow failure, blood disorders and metabolic disorders. Living donation is particularly vital for patients needing a kidney. Around 5,000 people in the UK need a kidney transplant and last year more than 250 patients died waiting for one. If you donate your kidney straight to someone you know who needs one, this is called directed kidney donation. If you’re not a suitable ‘match’, you may be able to donate to someone else and another person can donate to your intended recipient (called paired/pooled donation). “We hope people across the UK will get behind the week and the opportunity it presents to focus people’s attention on organ donation,” says Sally Johnson. If you’re considering registering as a donor, here’s how.

How to Register as an Organ Donor You can register online at www.organdonation.nhs.uk/registerto-donate/. You can also join the Register at your GP surgery or when you apply for a driving licence, European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or a Boots Advantage card. Wales adopted a soft opt-out policy in 2015, which means that if you do not opt out of organ donor registration, you are presumed to have no objection to being a donor.

How to Donate Organs or Tissues as a Living Donor: To donate organs, contact the transplant centres listed at www. odt.nhs.uk/transplantation/transplant-units-in-uk/ To donate tissues, contact the National Referral Centre on 0800 432 0559 (free to call) or email: national.referral.centre@ nhsbt.nhs.uk. PETS: Hamsters are very sensitive creatures, so when you bring home your new pet, it’s a good idea to leave them to settle in for a few days. They need to feel safe and secure, and not disturbing them too much will also help them become familiar with their new surroundings. Along with maintaining hygienic living conditions, diet plays an important part in your hamster’s day-to-day health, so what should you feed them?

FOOD, HEALTH AND HYGIENE FOR YOUR NEW HAMSTER Best foods for your hamster Quality ready-mixed hamster food or pellets are available in good pet stores and supermarkets, and are a simple way to ensure your hamster receives the nutrients it needs. If you know the type of food they were given previously, it’s a good idea to carry on with the same regime to prevent upsetting their digestive system. Hamsters also enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables, but fruit should be given in tiny quantities as too much sugar can cause diabetes. A small piece of carrot, apple, or cucumber once or twice a week will suffice.

Health and hygiene Your hamster’s cage should be cleaned thoroughly once a week with a safe disinfectant - more often in the area used as a toilet if they don’t have a litter tray. Hamster litter trays are very useful, particularly for smaller cages, and help your pet to stay clean. If you put a little of the old, dry bedding back in the cage, they’ll also be surrounded by their own scent, feeling safer as a result. www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/advice/ small-animal-care-advice/hamster-careadvice/ www.thehamsterhouse.com/hamster-food/ what-do-hamsters-eat/

You, Your Bones

AND OSTEOPOROSIS

Worldwide, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men aged 50 and over will suffer an osteoporotic fracture. World Osteoporosis Day on 20th October aims to raise osteoporosis awareness. Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones weaken and decrease in density, increasing the likelihood of fractures. The high incidence of fractures in the over-50s is mostly due to weakened bones. Although osteoporosis can affect any bone, the wrists, hips and spine are the most commonly affected.

Who is at risk? Women are generally at greater risk than men, as falling oestrogen levels during the menopause affect bone density. Women are at even higher risk if they:

Other sources of calcium: some green vegetables (e.g. kale, broccoli, okra), apricots, canned fish with bones (e.g. sardines), nuts, soya beans and soya milk.

• Experience menopause or have a hysterectomy before age 45.

Most of our vitamin D is produced naturally when our skin is exposed to sunlight (so ensure you spend a little time outside without sun cream). However, our sunlight exposure depends on location and lifestyle. Dietary sources include egg yolks, fatty fish (salmon, tuna and mackerel), beef liver and almond milk.

• Over-exercise or diet, stopping their periods for more than six months. Other risk factors include:

• Family history of osteoporosis or hip fracture.

You can also choose foods fortified with calcium and Vitamin D (e.g. some breads and cereals) or take supplements. Don’t take more than 500–600 mg of calcium daily and take Vitamin D too, as it’s essential for calcium absorption.

• A BMI of 19 or less.

DON’T: Smoke or exceed the advised alcohol limits of 2 units

• Overactive thyroid or parathyroid glands. • Adrenal gland or pituitary gland disorders.

• Long-term high-dose corticosteroid use (e.g. for arthritis or asthma). • Eating disorders.

a day. Both are proven to substantially raise fracture risk.

Diagnosing Osteoporosis

• Rheumatoid arthritis.

Doctors can use an online tool to assess fracture risk. You may also have a DEXA (DXA) scan that measures bone mineral density, giving you a ‘T score’. A score below -2.5 confirms a diagnosis of osteoporosis.

• Conditions causing malabsorption problems (e.g. coeliac or Crohn’s disease).

Treating Osteoporosis

• Some breast and prostate cancer medications.

Not everyone will need medication and treatment depends on age, sex, risk of fracture, previous injury history and existing conditions. It’s sensible to maintain healthy Vitamin D, calcium and fitness levels and reduce your fall risk by ensuring your eyesight and balance are fine. However, if you have a hormone deficiency, a supplement may be appropriate.

• Smoking and heavy drinking.

• Long periods of inactivity (e.g. long-term bed rest). • In men, low testosterone levels.

Preventing Osteoporosis DO: Take regular exercise that includes weight-bearing and

Other medications include:

muscle-strengthening activities, which exert force on bones and stimulate growth. They’ll also improve flexibility and balance, making falls less likely.

• Bisphosphonates (e.g. etidronate) and Selective Oestrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs), which help maintain bone density.

• Weight-bearing exercise: brisk walking, hiking, jogging, climbing stairs, rope skipping, aerobics or racquet sports.

• Strontium ranelate, which reduces bone breakdown and stimulates new bone growth.

• Muscle-strengthening (resistance) exercise: weight-lifting (hand weights are fine), resistance bands, weight machines, rising up on your toes and push-ups.

For More Information:

Include plenty of calcium, vitamin D and protein in your diet. Dairy foods are great sources of protein, calcium, Vitamin D and other vital minerals.

Creative Writing

HELPING YOUR CHILD TO CREATE STORIES

Whether they’re slaying dragons or discovering new worlds, children’s imagination knows no bounds. When it comes to creating stories with characters and plots though, it can be difficult to get started when faced with a blank page. A few props and story prompts can really help to get those creative juices flowing. Creating characters Fill a cloth bag with accessories, such as perfume and aftershave samples, a silk tie, an old pair of glasses, a toy, a brooch, a hat, a watch and other personal items. Try to avoid things that your child already associates with someone they know. Scour your local charity shops and ask friends for donations. You could also add a few fantastical items to the bag, like a pirate hat, fairy wand, bottle of witch’s potion, toy spaceship and so on. Ask your child to choose two or three items from the bag, without looking. Then ask them to create a character based around the items. Ask questions to help. What does the character look like? Are they male or female? How old are they? What do they like doing? Where do they live? And so on. Your child can then write about their character, or draw a picture of them, or both.

Creating stories If your child is struggling to think of a story, creative prompts can help them to get started. You could come up with a scenario and ask them to think about what might happen next. For example, ‘Your character finds a door hidden behind a bookcase. It’s only two feet high, so they have to crawl through it. What do they find when they do?’ Alternatively, you can write short story prompts on pieces of paper. Here’s a few to get you started: •

Goes to space

Gets lost

Makes a new friend

Invents something

Has their wish come true

Goes on holiday

Discovers they have a superpower

Finds a hurt animal

Discovers a secret door

48

Fold each story prompt up so it can’t be read, and ask your child to choose one or two. They can then use the prompts as the basis for their story. Don’t be too rigid. If they don’t like the prompt, let them pick another. If they have a different idea for a story, even better!

Telling their story Storytelling isn’t just about writing. Your child could: •

Tell you the story

Act it out

Make puppets and put on a show

Create a comic strip

Extra resources There are lots of free online resources to help you. A good place to start is www.youngwriters.co.uk, which offers downloadable workshops and activities. Creativity for Kids makes fun craft kits, including Create Your Own Pop Up Books. The kit includes two books, several colouring pens, stickers and pop-up elements (see main picture). It kept our young testers entertained for a good couple of hours, and the results have become treasured keepsakes. The kit costs £16.50 and can be bought from Amazon, Hobbycraft and independent arts and craft shops. If your child needs a bit of motivation, they could enter a competition. Libraries and literacy organisations often organise or advertise children’s creative writing competitions, as do Writing Times (www.writingtimes.co.uk), Young Writers (www.youngwriters.co.uk) and Families magazine (www. familiesonline.co.uk).

Experience a Victorian Halloween

AT BLISTS HILL VICTORIAN TOWN

Join the residents of Blists Hill Victorian Town, near Ironbridge as they celebrate Halloween in traditional style during the autumn half-term, 21st - 29th October. The Victorians marked All Hallows Eve with some curious customs and unusual rituals such as carving turnips (rather than the modern day pumpkins) into Jack-olanterns to frighten away evil spirits. Visitors can play light-hearted divination and fortune telling games with the townsfolk in their cottages, follow a trail around the historic streets to discover more about Victorian Halloween traditions and ‘meet’ Sweeny Todd, the demon barber who will be looking for more victims to dispatch. In Victorian England, Halloween was marked by the popular practice of ‘souling’, when children, and sometimes poor adults, would dress up and go

around door-to-door offering prayers and songs in exchange for Soul Cakes, paving the way for our Trick or Treat custom. A selection of these simple round spiced cakes, which were often marked with a cross, will be on sale in the Town’s bakery. Every day between 12 noon and 3pm (apart from Sunday, 29th October), everyone is invited to take part in the national Big Draw Festival to create spooky scenes of the Town using the Victorian pointillist painting technique, but with modern spray paint. With this method hundreds of dots of pure colour are applied to a picture; rather than mixing colours on a palette it relies on the eye of the painter to mix the colours. The completed scenes will be displayed at Ghostly Gaslight on Saturday evening, 28th October. One of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums, Blists Hill is open 10am to 4pm, apart from 28th October when it closes at 3pm to prepare for the Ghostly Gaslight evening event. For further information, call the Ironbridge Tourist Information Centre on 01952 433 424 or visit www. ironbridge.org.uk.

Husband and Wife

As if tackling the gruelling, 10,000-mile Mongol Rally wasn’t tough enough, adventurer Chris Ramsey will be upping the ante, competing this year in an electric Nissan Leaf. With just a few modifications, EV evangelist Ramsey, 40, from Aberdeen, and his wife Julie, will set off from Goodwood on 16th July on an adventure they expect will take up to two months to complete.

TAKING ON 10K-MILE RALLY IN ELECTRIC CAR

in just over 48 hours, and I was the first person to complete the North Coast 500, which is the new ‘Route 66’ of Scotland. The Mongol Rally, for me, was always the next challenge. I’m going to be travelling about 90 to 100 miles per charge and the rally is all about an adventure and having a long experience, so the short distances between charges means I can stop and enjoy the whole scenery, the cultures and environments – and meet the public along the way, who will hopefully help with charging.

What are you looking forward to most?

Not only will they be forced to tackle tough terrain and unfamiliar roads, they’ll also have the added challenge of finding somewhere to charge up every 90 miles. Here Chris explains why he chose to take on the epic drive in the first electric car ever to enter the rally.

We’ve tied in very closely with local governments and one is the Kazakhstani government, so when we get to the capital city, Astana, we’ll be attending a future fuels event. We’re going to show the Leaf off to the public there because Kazakhstan is really looking to get hold of the whole electric vehicle revolution.

What is the Mongol Rally?

How have you prepared the Leaf for the trip?

It’s a 10,000-mile charity drive across the mountains and deserts of Europe and Asia. Each team is expected to raise a minimum of £1,000 for charity. The rules state that participants must drive a sub-1.0-litre car, as it will make the event more of a challenge with a greater chance of a breakdown, meaning drivers can interact with locals along the way. The drive is unsupported, with no backup all the way from Goodwood to Ulan-Ude.

We’ve done very little in terms of the drivetrain – the car is a bog-standard 30kW Nissan Leaf. What we’ve done is strip down the back of the car to reduce the weight, taking it down by about 34kg, and we’ve prepared the underside of the car with a 6mm aluminium plate to protect it on rough terrain. Outside of that, we’ve put a roof rack on the top, added some LED lights, and we’ve got some rally tyres for when we get to the rougher stuff.

Why did you choose to do this in a Nissan Leaf?

How long do you think the rally will take you?

This is the first time anybody’s ever entered the Mongol Rally in an electric vehicle or even attempted to do it, so this is unique. There are 330 other teams entered so far and not one is electric. People think the biggest challenge will be the charging infrastructure and how to get a charge, but for me it’s going to be crossing borders. This car can charged from any kind of angle, from any kind of electric source, so for me the tough bit will actually be navigating borders like those of Russia and Ukraine.

It’s going to take us about six to eight weeks. We’ve allowed a bit of float in there because it’s about having an adventure, not about getting there first, so we’ve planned it so that we can stop off along the way. I’m going to have a co-driver with me too. I’m fortunate to have my wife, who’s just as passionate about electric cars as I am, and she loves to travel - so it’ll be a perfect combination.

Have you done anything like this in an electric car before? I’ve completed a number of electric vehicle adventures in Nissan Leafs. I’ve done John O’Groats to Land’s End and back

Paddleboarding

To prove just how practical its new city car can be, Kia challenged James Baggott to tackle the Italian coast on a paddleboard. It’s all too easy to pigeonhole cars like the Kia Picanto as city centre shopping carts, fit for nothing more than a quick trip to the supermarket. While it might be true that the Korean car firm’s baby has traditionally been bought by grandparents and students, it’s an image the brand is desperately hoping it can shed. This is the third generation of Kia’s second bestselling UK car and with it comes more aggressive looks, a sharper driving style and clever technology aimed at helping it appeal to a far broader spectrum of buyers. Kia believes it can convince customers that while it might still be an easy and fun to drive little car, the new Picanto can still cope with the bigger adventures city dwellers might hanker for too. That’s why I find myself squeezed into a wet suit, dripping with sea water after a paddle-boarding adventure on the Italian coastline. To prove just how versatile its new Picanto can be, Kia has invited us to the Toscana coastline, crammed two blow-up paddleboards, wet suits and a picnic in the back of one of their latest city cars and pointed us towards the coast. Costing from just £9,450, the Picanto now boasts more passenger and luggage space but with no overall increase in size over the previous model. The Koreans have managed that by increasing the wheelbase while at the same time reducing overhangs. That means inside there’s a 25 per cent increase in luggage space, topping 255 litres with the rear seats up and 1,010 litres with them down. That extra carrying capacity certainly comes in handy. The two giant paddleboards are easily swallowed in the boot, while overnight bags for two and accessories find a home too. In fact, it’s surprising just how much space there is left over. There’s a choice of engines in the new model. Our test vehicle – in ‘2’ specification – features the 1.0 litre 66bhp unit. But there’s also a 1.25 litre 83bhp option and a 1.0 litre turbocharged option. As fun as the latter sounds, even the lowest output unit hauls the city car along at a perfectly adequate rate (despite the addition of a lot of luggage) hitting 60mph in 13.8 seconds

54

IN A PICANTO

and a top speed of 100mph. What’s more it’ll do that while sipping fuel at a miserly 64.2mpg rate on the combined cycle. Crossing the rich, lush green vine-covered Italian countryside near Grosseto as we attempt to find the beach, the Picanto’s light steering and peppy engine impresses, as does its ability to soak up potholes you’d fear would otherwise swallow it. As we approach the beach, the asphalt crumbles away and the Picanto skips between giant holes littering the sand-covered track to the water. The beach at Grosseto is being battered by strong winds, whipping up a swell that’s enthralling kite surfers, but not particularly pleasing for paddleboarders. Thankfully a sheltered tributary that runs deep into the countryside offers far more tempting sheltered waters. After an hour on the lightly rippled river, we decide to embark on some impromptu surfing in the ravaging waves lashing the beach. Despite the clouds, it’s surprisingly warm beneath the white-capped surf as we fall time after time beneath the waves. While drying off in the supportive front seats of the Kia, there’s time to play with the kit. It’s functional not flashy inside, and despite the smaller screen for the multimedia system on this mid-range ‘2’, it still works well with your phone, streaming Spotify perfectly. There’s air conditioning, electric front and rear windows, heated door mirrors and a leather trimmed steering wheel to enjoy and that’s on top of the options standard across the range, which include remote central locking, USB and AUX ports, electronic stability control and automatic emergency braking. The latter was well demonstrated on our return trip, triggering when a sheep strayed into the middle of the road. The system automatically brakes for drivers to a complete stop when it senses a crash – in this case assisting to the point where the sheep narrowly avoided becoming another statistic. Kia has certainly moved its Picanto on in leaps and bounds from its predecessor. On the road it’s sharper to drive, quieter and more sporty than ever before. Its new technology – which on higher specification models even includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – is impressive, while it’s a comfortable car to spend time in. What’s more, it’s always satisfying to know that even though it’s a car unlikely to shed that blue rinse stereotype, if you are a more adventurous owner it can cope admirably with all the kit you’ll need to escape city life.

Motorways

FOUR LANES, OR THREE WITH A HARD SHOULDER?

If you’ve driven on Britain’s motorways recently, you can’t fail to have noticed that the hard shoulder is sometimes being turned into another lane. On some motorways this new lane is at times a lane and at others a hard shoulder. Indications on gantries above the lanes tell you when this is the case. These roads are termed “smart motorways” and there are three types: those with “Dynamic Hard Shoulder Running”, ones with “All Lane Running” and a third called “Controlled Motorways”. So, what exactly are these? When driving on a Dynamic Hard Shoulder motorway, expect the hard shoulder to be a lane at busy periods and a hard shoulder at other times; when it’s a lane you can use refuges, placed every 500m or so, to stop in an emergency. All Lane Running is just that: the hard shoulder has gone, replaced by an emergency refuge every 2.5km. Controlled Motorways are like old style motorways: three or four lanes with a permanent hard shoulder. Except now the carriageways are subject to variable speed limits.

If you breakdown on the first two types of motorway, and can nurse your car to a refuge, don’t just set off after fixing the fault: gone is the Highway Code directive of “gather speed on the hard shoulder and rejoin the carriageway”. Now you must contact the Highways Agency, who will then escort you back onto the carriageway. Statistically motorways are the safest roads in the UK, but with three lanes or sometimes four, variable limits and no continuous hard shoulder, it’s still best to know what kind of road you are travelling on. If It Appreciates, Buy It Those wise words were said by oil tycoon John Paul Getty: a man who knew something about looking after money. And he’s right. Especially when it comes to cars. If you have half-million plus to buy a Ferrari Dino 246 GTS then, I say, you are wise to make that purchase. For next year you might make £100,000 when you sell it.

IF IT DEPRECIATES, LEASE IT

I bought the aforementioned 500 for my daughters, after the “deposit contribution”, the service package, the low RFL fee and the Fiat-backed lease deal were factored in the monthly payments were cheaper than if I had bought a two year old model with 20,000 miles on the clock. Plus I’ve an extra two years before the MOT is due. You get no discounts for cash either. Dealers sell the finance options because they get commission and the repayment risk is passed to the finance firm. A win-win for them.

But if you only have £10,000 to buy a Fiat 500 then I reckon, fun car as it is (I’ve got one), you are mad.

So, keep your money in the bank instead of watching it drain away on what you spend on that car.

Two cars from the same company at polar opposites on the payscale, but I advise you to buy the expensive one. For the 500, and any other mass-market car, I advise leasing every time.

Mr Getty was right. Collectable cars go up in value, so buy, buy, buy. But production line jellymoulds? Forget it. Lease every time.

Manufacturers and dealers are desperate to shift cars so deals on new ones are phenomenal. When

How to Build Up Your Credit Rating Being able to borrow money when you need it is a crucial part of everyday life for most people. It enables you to enter the property market when the time comes, helps you buy your first car, and provides the means to deal with emergencies when they happen. Many undergraduate bank accounts offer a credit card and arranged overdraft facility when you start university, with the overdraft facility often being increased over the following years depending on the risk involved to the lender.

AT UNIVERSITY

rating. You will also be charged a high interest rate on the outstanding balance, and late payment fees. Using a creditbuilder credit card is one of the most effective ways to build a good credit history if it’s used properly. So that you don’t miss a payment, it’s a good idea to set up a direct debit from your bank – then at least there’ll be a minimum amount paid to your credit card each month, which you can always add to if necessary. • Make sure you’re on the electoral register Any lender will want to see that you have a fixed address, and be able to confirm your identity. This increases confidence that you’re trustworthy, but as a student living in halls the best option is to use your home address. You can apply to be included on the register by contacting your local council or using the gov.uk website. • If you apply for credit, use a landline number Putting a landline number on an application for borrowing, rather than a mobile number, indicates stability and will work in your favour when the lender makes their decision. • Don’t exceed your overdraft limit without authorisation

Do lenders think you will default? This is partly how lenders decide whether or not to accept an application for borrowing – it’s based largely on the risk of default that you present to them. This risk is assessed using your credit file, which contains a credit rating and other information. The problem for you as a university student is that, because of your age, you’re unlikely to have a credit history that lenders can use. They can’t predict how you’ll manage your money, so having no credit history can be as bad as a poor one in their eyes. There are certain steps you can take to address this problem, however, and build up a good credit rating at university. The earlier you start, the better your credit file will look to a lender later on. Building a good credit rating certainly takes time, but when your degree course is finished and you start work, you’ll be thankful for the steps you’ve already taken. So what can you do to help yourself at this stage? • Apply for a credit-builder credit card These credit cards are for people with no credit history, or a poor credit rating that needs to be rebuilt. In your case, a card such as this will allow you to build up a good credit history, as long as you are sensible and use it in the right way. You should use it each month to pay for regular but relatively low outgoings - your food shopping, for example, or rail tickets. The crucial part is to pay off the balance in full, and without fail, every month. Missing a single payment will instantly damage your credit

58

Going over your arranged overdraft limit, even for a day, will trigger high interest charges and other fees, but crucially it will also damage your credit score. If you know that you’re going to need extra money for a limited time, talk to your bank and see if they’ll agree to increase your limit, even if it’s only on a temporary basis. • Avoid taking out store cards Store cards often have higher interest rates than credit cards. If you’re offered one when you’re shopping, it may give you 20% off your bill, but the risk of overspending on it and damaging your credit rating for the long-term just isn’t worth it. • Avoid multiple applications for credit If you’re refused credit by one or more lenders it will adversely affect your credit rating, so it’s a good idea to avoid making multiple applications at the same time. • Pay all your bills on time It’s not just your credit card bill that you need to pay on time – you should make sure all your household and other bills, such as broadband and mobile phone, are paid promptly. Setting up a direct debit ensures that you don’t forget. • Include rent payments in your credit file The Rental Scheme was first introduced in 2016. It involves paying your rent to the landlord through an intermediary, who informs the credit reference agencies that you’ve paid on time. The three main credit reference agencies in the UK – Experian, Equifax, and Callcredit – each hold their own information about your credit history. At some point whilst you’re at university, it would be worthwhile checking with each agency to ensure the information they hold is correct. www.savethestudent.org/money/student-banking/studentcredit-rating.html

Could Brexit Cloud Your Plans

TO RETIRE IN THE SUN?

When the TV programme “A Place in the Sun” launched in the year 2000, it seemed to capture a growing spirit of optimism at the start of the new millennium. International travel was becoming easier and cheaper thanks to the birth of lowcost airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair, and the show’s aim was to demonstrate how simple it could be to buy a home - or a second home - in a sunny spot abroad, settle down and “live the dream”. The dream included cheap property, an affordable cost of living, straightforward travel to and from the UK and a more relaxed lifestyle in a sunny clime. The prospect of owning a place in the sun was particularly tempting for older people planning their retirement: with properties in France, Spain, Portugal and Greece available at roughly half the cost of an average family home in the UK (or in some cases, even less), retirees could downsize and use the remaining cash from the property sale to supplement their pensions. Legislation allowing the free movement of EU citizens meant that it was easier to take up residence in another country and travel freely without the need for visas, while reciprocal EU healthcare arrangements provided access to free medical treatment throughout the European community. Spain has been one of the most popular destinations for British buyers and to date it is thought that over 300,000 UK residents have made a home in Spain, while more than 600,000 have bought second homes. France is the second most popular country, with an estimated 171,000 Brits now settled there, but recently, thanks to the EU referendum, the picture has begun to change. Earlier this year a report by Spain’s Association of Land and Commercial Registrars revealed that British demand for second homes had reduced by 30% since the referendum, while estate agents on some of the more popular Greek islands reported an even sharper decline, with an estimated 80% drop in interest. It’s clear that we are becoming more cautious when it comes to investing in European property. One of the greatest concerns for prospective buyers is that the rights and benefits British citizens have previously enjoyed as a result of the UK’s membership of the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA) will be withdrawn when we leave. Listed below are some of the key points of contention:

Buying a property Currently the fall in the pound is making overseas property purchases more expensive for UK buyers, but it is hoped that the pound’s value will eventually strengthen when more is known about Britain’s prospects outside the EU. While there is no doubt that Britons will continue to be able to buy property and live in an EU country after Brexit (just as non-EU and non-EU European nationals do without problems

60

today), there are questions as to whether property-owning Brits will be charged higher taxes on their assets. Although nothing is certain at this stage, the economic benefits UK property owners bring to less affluent areas of France, Spain and Portugal may make it less likely that EU countries will want to penalise British owners.

Travel Once we have left the European community, it’s unlikely that we will experience the same speedy passage through passport control that we once enjoyed, but the jury is out on whether you might need a visa to visit another EU country. If visas are required, spontaneous trips to the UK from your home abroad - or from Britain to your EU holiday home - could become a thing of the past, as you will need to factor in the administrative time required to process your visa when you travel.

Medical treatment At present, anyone receiving a UK state pension gets the same level of free healthcare as a local pensioner if they live in an EU country. It would be extremely costly for the NHS if, after Brexit, it had to care for everyone who currently receives treatment abroad, so it is expected that negotiators will try to keep some sort of reciprocal arrangement provided the UK remains in the EEA.

Mobile phone roaming charges The European Commission recently ruled that EU citizens (and that currently includes British mobile users) do not have to pay roaming charges if they are calling between EU countries. Although the Three network has pledged to maintain free roaming charges regardless of the Brexit outcome, other providers have not yet made the same commitment. There is - inevitably - a lot of speculation about how our exit from the EU might affect our ability to live in or visit European countries, but the truth is no-one can give an accurate answer until negotiations with the remaining 27 member states have been completed. Until that time, the dream of retiring to “a place in the sun” may simply have to be put on ice.

We’re here to make it easy for people to give feedback about health and care services, requiring no more than a short telephone call, email or even a Tweet. As well as speaking to people who contact us to share their stories, we also offer signposting and information about services available in the county.

these visits are shared with those in charge of running services to make them aware of any improvements you’d like to see. A World Without Wires THE BEST WAY TO GET WIRELESS WI-FI AT HOME OR ON THE GO If you go out and about this year, you’re in for a happy surprise: You don’t need to be travelling far from home to get free Wi-Fi. Many UK towns and cities have free Wi-Fi schemes - and most casual eating and coffee chains usually offer some form of free internet access. Just watch what you’re signing up for: such publicspirited provision is often there in order to capture valuable marketing data, so keep a close eye on any tick-boxes you’re expected to complete. It’s also a good idea to use a virtual private networking (VPN) service such as Tunnelbear (www.tunnelbear.com)

or

Windscribe

(www.

windscribe.com) to keep your connection private if you intend to use public Wi-Fi services. You never know who’s looking in. If you’re staying at home and just want to get better reception around the house or in the garden, there are several ways to make your Wi-Fi work harder. The first, cheapest and simplest thing to do to improve your Wi-Fi connection is to move the router: ideally it should be higher than your furniture and obstacles such as radiators, which are hard for the radio waves to pass through. If your wireless router is getting on a bit it’s probably stuck with older, slow Wi-Fi technology, so if you can stretch to an 802.11ac wireless router you’ll notice a huge difference in speed and range - provided of course your laptop, tablet or smartphone has the same Wi-Fi support. If the speed is fine but the signal just doesn’t go far enough, a Wi-Fi extender may be just the trick: it connects to the network and throws the signal further, so for example you might extend your home Wi-Fi network to the garden or patio. It isn’t expensive or difficult, either: good Wi-Fi extenders are available for less than £40 and take seconds to set up.

Can Sleeping Apart

BRING YOU CLOSER TOGETHER? Foundation, almost one in four of us now sleep in separate beds or bedrooms, and in a recent poll by silversurfers.com, 84% of respondents aged 50+ said they believed sharing a bed wasn’t essential for a happy relationship. After all, the Queen and Price Philip famously sleep apart. In a biography by Sally Bedell Smith, published in 2012, the Queen’s cousin Lady Pamela Hicks is quoted as saying: “In England, the upper class always have had separate bedrooms. You don’t want to be bothered with snoring or someone flinging a leg around. Then, when you are feeling cosy, you share your room sometimes. It is lovely to be able to choose.”

The duvet twitches, followed by footsteps on the bedroom floor and the creaking of a door: it’s four o’clock in the morning and your partner is on the move for the second time that night. Thanks to this interruption, you’re now wide awake, and as you lie there in the darkness, you wonder how to broach the subject of sleeping in separate beds... Most of us have experienced the irritation of being woken at night by a partner who is answering a call of nature, snoring loudly or thrashing around in a violent dream. If it’s a one-off event, the chances are you will simply roll over and go back to sleep, but if your sleep is disrupted on a regular basis, then you may feel compelled to take action. Most individuals need around eight hours’ sleep a night to function well, but this can vary from person to person. As a general rule, if you wake up feeling tired and have to catch up with a nap during the day, you’re probably not getting enough sleep. In the short term the symptoms of sleep deprivation can include memory loss, difficulty in concentrating and mood changes, but in the longer term lack of sleep can result in serious conditions such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes. In a recent survey, the Sleep Council found that women are far more likely to be disturbed by their partners than men, with 31% percent of female sleepers reporting sleep disruption, as opposed to 19% of males. While the health argument alone is enough to justify a conversation about separate beds, it’s a difficult topic to discuss face-to-face. If you’ve shared a bed for twenty or thirty years, it can feel like a betrayal to suggest you should sleep apart, which is why many light sleepers choose to put up with night-time disturbances rather than upset their partner. But if you’ve reached the end of your tether and are seriously considering the option of sleeping apart, there’s no need to feel alone. According to a 2015 survey by the National Sleep

72

So what are the options if you do decide to sleep separately? When the time came to replace an old double bed, Max and Celia Stoddart from Hampshire took the decision to replace it with twin beds. Celia says: “The idea came to us when we booked a week in a hotel. We’d reserved a room with a double bed but all they could offer us was a twin room. When we got home at the end of the week, we both agreed that we’d slept better than we had done in years. It made sense to buy twin beds, as that means we can both be in the same room without cramping each other’s space.” Vihann Khan’s sleep apnoea meant his snoring kept wife Nazneen awake at night. While he was receiving treatment, Nazneen regularly escaped to a spare bed set up in their guest room. Although Vihann’s condition has now improved, Nazneen still uses the spare bed from time to time. She says: “At times when I can’t sleep, it helps to know I have somewhere to escape, where I won’t disturb Vihann if I’m restless. We always start out the night together, but he knows there’s a chance he’ll wake up alone in the morning.” Jill and Maurice McGiver from Renfrewshire were unhappy about the idea of sleeping apart, but both agreed that they would sleep better if they had more space. For them, investing in a kingsize bed was the solution. “We have an average-size bedroom and the bed now takes up most of the available space,” says Maurice, “but it has been worth the sacrifice to get a good night’s sleep. If you live in a small flat or a cottage, a kingsize bed may not work for you, but for us it’s been a lifesaver.” Although these couples have found different solutions to their sleeping problems, all three agree that the changes they have made have not only improved their health and wellbeing, but have also enhanced their relationships. So perhaps the idea that sleeping apart can bring you together isn’t so far-fetched after all!

Books

INTRIGUING READS Secrets, lies and mysteries are at the heart of this month’s picks.

The Marriage Pact – Michelle Richmond

Newlyweds Alice and Jake are invited to join The Pact. The group seems to have just one goal – making marriages work. All members need to do is agree to follow the rules for a happy marriage, and accept support if they struggle. However, as Alice and Jake soon find out, there are consequences for breaking the rules, and The Pact is, like marriage, for life. A tense psychological thriller you’ll want to devour in one sitting.

The Life She Was Given – Ellen Marie Wiseman

Lily knows she’s different. After all, her parents have kept her locked away for all of her nine years, in case she scares people. But then one day, in 1931, her mother drags her away from Blackwood Manor, and sells her to the circus. Fast forward to 1956 and Julia returns back to the home she ran away from. Two women, one house, 25 years apart; will the secret of Lily finally come to light? Well researched, with believable characters and a story that really draws you in, this is a must for fans of historical fiction.

Pieces of Happiness – Anne Ostby

Recently widowed, Kat invites her four old school friends to join her on a cocoa plantation in Fiji. Now in their sixties, the women each have their own reasons for wanting to leave their old lives behind. Together they set up as chocolatiers, and let the island heal old wounds and allow them to make peace with their lives. As the subtitle says, this is a ‘Novel of Friendship, Hope and Chocolate’. Perfect for fans of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Don’t Close Your Eyes – Holly Seddon

Sarah is the good girl, the one her parents can always rely on to behave. Robin is the impetuous one, who can always be relied on to cause havoc. The twins are devastated when their parents’ divorce separates them. Now in her 30s, Robin lives alone, trapped in her home by crippling agoraphobia. Sarah has built what seems to be the perfect life, but after being forced to leave it all behind, she goes in search of the only person she feels she can turn to – Robin. There’s just one person missing, their step-brother Callum.

Flesh and Bone and Water – Luiza Sauma

André Cabral is divorced and living in London when he receives a letter sent by a woman from his past - a letter that may just call him back to Brazil. Rewind a few years and we meet the teenage André – grieving for his mother, frustrated by his father’s demands, and infatuated with his 16 year old maid, Luana. An enjoyable read that paints a vivid picture of Brazil, from its beautiful beaches to its rigid social structure.

The Good Daughter – Karin Slaughter

Charlotte and Samantha Quinn’s lives are changed forever when a violent crime destroys their family. 28 years later, Charlotte is working as a defence lawyer. She finds herself embroiled in a tragic event that leaves the town reeling, and the memories she’s tried so hard to bury come rushing back. Gripping.

Tech for the New Term THE BEST SOLUTIONS FOR STUDENTS AND SCHOOLWORK

It’s that time of year again: schools, colleges and universities are readying for a new term and parents are running around trying to get everything their children need. Increasingly that includes technology, whether that’s a basic laptop for younger children’s homework or an all-rounder for studying, social media and streaming video at home or in student accommodation.

1

It’s worth thinking about streaming video if your children are staying away from home, because you can get almost all the TV you want for free, entirely legally, via the internet and most catch-up TV apps (BBC Iplayer does need a licence). There’s no need for a pricey Sky or Virgin contract, just a decent broadband service. If video is going to be a key thing, make sure whatever you buy has a good-sized screen or buy a Chromecast, which enables you to stream video from your computer to a TV. The best all-rounder is a Windows 10 laptop, and you’ll find lots of really good bargains from the likes of Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer and Asus around the £400 mark. There’s another option: tablets such as the iPad. Previously we’ve said they aren’t really ideal for serious work but that’s changed with the arrival of the iPad Pro, which is a genuine alternative to a powerful laptop. It’s pricey though (from £619) with another £159 for a keyboard cover or £99 for the Apple Pencil (£99).

2

In the unlikely event that your child doesn’t already have a phone, give Apple a miss unless you’re really fond of their products or don’t care about the cost: Lenovo’s P2 and the Moto G5 are both brilliant Android smartphones and cost less than £150 SIM-free. And if they need an e-reader, Amazon’s all-conquering Kindle remains the one to get - but you don’t need to buy the top-end Kindle Voyage (£169): the basic Kindle is just £59.99 and does the job perfectly well. It’s worth checking your insurance policies too, especially if your children will be moving out for college or university. Your home insurance might already cover your children’s gadgets when they’re away from home, but don’t assume that’s the case - and if they do, check the excesses, which might be higher than the cost of repairing or replacing a gadget. The same applies to any contents insurance you may take out for your children’s accommodation. Lots of companies have insurance policies specifically designed for students’ computers and smartphones, and sites such as money.co.uk enable you to compare the cover, cost and excesses quickly. We’d particularly recommend insurance that covers you for accidental damage: if something can be dropped, smashed or accidentally covered in liquid, it probably will be.

Gutter Cleaning

FROM THE GROUND

When did you last have your Gutters cleared out? Gutter health is an often-overlooked part of your home maintenance plan, but gutters perform an important function in protecting your home. Axa, the world leading insurance company, suggest that gutters require at least an internal inspection each year, and clearing out if they are clogged up. Blocked gutters can lead to brick damage, wood rot and even damp on internal walls of your home. Local GutterPRO expert Karl Wilson says “Contrary to popular belief, moss not leaves are the major cause of gutter blockages. So even if your property doesn’t have trees in the immediate area there may still be a problem building up. Moss does a great job of falling from your roof when it rains and then swelling up in your guttering. The moss breaks down and provides a great medium for weeds and grass to germinate which will prevent water running freely to the drains.” GutterPRO are able to clear gutters from the ground using a powerful vacuum system and super-light carbon poles. Because of the length of the poles, GutterPRO can reach over your conservatory where it would be impossible to place a ladder safely. This means that not only is there less risk of falling off a ladder, there is less risk to your property too. Karl says “For your full peace of mind, we use a CCTV system that enables us to show you before and after photographs of the work we have completed for you. If your gutters are clear, then there is no call out charge. All our jobs are booked in for a timed appointment, so you know when we are coming.” During August, GutterPRO introduced a gutter washing service which removes black marks and dirt from uPVC gutters and fascia boards, giving homes a fresh new look and much improved kerbside appeal. Karl continues “We are seeing people getting a clear and clean before putting their properties on the market. People don’t want to see grass growing from gutters, or dirty gutters on estate agent's photos.”

Patagonia

In the southernmost reaches of the American continent, Patagonia is divided between two countries. To the west Chile owns a mere 25%, while Argentina to the east claims the remainder. Between them rise the Andes, but in the ancient land of the ‘big feet’, so called by early explorers, the beautiful Patagonian lakes have no borders. A thousand kilometres south of Santiago de Chile, Puerto Varas sits on the bank of Llanquihue, meaning ‘blue water’ in the local Mapuche language. Protected from the Pacific by a mere strip of land, it is the most popular and second largest lake in Chile. It opens out like a fan, looking across to mighty volcanoes where snowy tops barely disguise the danger. At over 2,600 metres, Osorno has been dormant for almost 150 years but its neighbour Cabulco erupted in 2015 with hardly any warning at all. Yet on the southern shore, the pretty resort of Puerto Varas is as relaxed as ever, sprinkled with alpine chalets, manicured lawns and flower gardens, hence the name ‘City of Roses’. From the cuisine to the architecture, there is much German influence around, reflecting the ‘selective immigration’ of the 19th century designed to boost development. Below the lush meadows where the red-topped church spires rise, dark sands glisten along the lakeside promenade and after dark, garlands of lights twinkle around the bay. Here you can kayak, trek, ski in winter or explore the Perez Rosales National Park, home to the Petrohué waterfalls, exotic birds and over 100 species of trees. Puerto Varas is the departure point for the scenic boat-bus crossing of the Andes to San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina,

LAKE DISTRICT

taking in a string of lakes. Most visitors overnight in Peulla, a magical sort of place by a tiny remote lake, before facing every type of weather the Andes can conjure up in 48 hours. At 893 metres, on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi, San Carlos de Bariloche owes its name to ‘the people behind the mountains’, hidden for centuries from missionaries and conquistadors. Today visitors come from afar to ski on Cerro Catedral’s slopes, trek in the forests of the National Park or sunbathe on the beach. Swimming in the glacial waters is not recommended. The lake is up to 157 metres deep, measures 357km around, has seven branches connecting it to other lakes and its own monster, Nahuelito, discovered in the early 1900s but long known to aborigines. It is rich in trout and salmon, attracts kelp gulls and blue-eyed cormorants and is the source of the Limay river. Wooden chalets and stylish villas doze on the shore while downtown, myriad chocolate shops beckon along the high street where brightly-clad women shelter under the arcades, knitting ponchos and woolly hats. The church boasts over 45 stained glass windows and on the quaint clock tower, traditional Patagonian figures come out twice a day to strike the hours. But when the sun is shining, the unmissable attraction is the 360° panorama from Cerro Otto, at 1,405 metres. A cable car glides silently to the summit’s breathtaking view, stretching from the toy-like town below to the vast expanse of Nahuel Huapi, the islands, the neighbouring lakes and the rugged hills and mountains all around. It’s cold and windy on the top but the revolving restaurant welcomes you with hot food and drinks at reasonable prices and the most stunning views of Patagonia’s Lake District.

Exciting Volunteering Opportunities

Notes from your local Ironbridge Gorge Councillor I am delighted to confirm that English Heritage’s conservation project on the Iron Bridge will begin in September and will be repaired as part of a major £1.25m conservation project. Over 50 people attended a special Iron Bridge conservation project drop-in event this month, where the community were able to see English Heritage’s conservation programme in more detail. This follows on from representations made to ensure an involvement in this fascinating project. The Iron Bridge is an iconic symbol of the industrial revolution and one of the most important sites in English Heritage’s care. This conservation project will ensure that both its revolutionary structure and the historical legacy that once saw the Gorge as an industrial powerhouse is preserved, to ensure it continues to inspire both the local community and visitors for generations to come. The Council has recently revised the housing target within the Telford & Wrekin Local Plan representing an overall increase in dwellings from 15,555 to 17,280. This potential increase in housing could have significant effects on our infrastructure, rural setting and our local heritage. Therefore it is important that the local authority reassure our communities that decisions are being made using a robust planning framework and that our Objectively Assessed Housing Needs is not uplifted to a level beyond the economic evidence to support this level of growth.

Telford & Wrekin Citizens Advice is on the hunt for volunteers to help support residents with different individual issues each year. The office in Tan Bank, Wellington is looking for volunteers to join their friendly and enthusiastic teams to offer advice and support to the community. As the backbone of the service, volunteers perform all sorts of roles from advising, to support administration, financial capability support, fund-raising, telephonist, research and campaigning and trusteeships. Telford & Wrekin Citizens Advice is on the lookout for people to become advisers by undertaking the training provided. Expenses are provided as well as ongoing support and coaching. Valerie Graham, Development Manager at Citizens Advice said: "Volunteers are vital to the way we deliver our service. They work tirelessly to support members of the public with many areas of concern from debt and employment to the continually changing benefit system and housing”. “All sorts of people volunteer for Citizens Advice, but one thing that unites them all is that they find it challenging, rewarding and varied and you never stop learning”. "We are looking for people with availability for a minimum of one day per week, who have good communication and computer skills and who would like to offer support to the local community of Telford & Wrekin. If you would like a satisfying challenge that enables you to meet a range of people and give something back to the public, please do get in touch."

World Space Week

4TH TO 10TH OCTOBER duration, human-rated deep space exploration. Orion is intended to transport up to six astronauts to destinations beyond low Earth orbit, such as asteroids, the moon and eventually Mars, and return them safely to Earth. It can withstand re-entry speeds of over 20,000 miles per hour. It will enable NASA to extend sustainable, affordable human and robotic exploration across the solar system, developing innovative technology and infrastructure to take space exploration even farther.

Space X: Planning for Our Move to Mars Founded in 2002 by Elon Musk, SpaceX designs, manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft “with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets.”

The UN founded World Space Week in 1999 to celebrate “the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition.” It’s now the largest space event in the world, with 86 countries holding 2,700 events last year. This year’s theme is ‘Exploring New Worlds in Space’, and here we look at four major projects the Week will highlight.

New Horizons: Pushing the Boundaries The New Horizons spacecraft was launched on 19th January 2006, beginning NASA’s first mission to reconnoitre Pluto and venture into the distant Kuiper Belt. It conducted a six-month-long reconnaissance of the dwarf planet Pluto and its moons in summer 2015. With NASA approval, the spacecraft will head further into the vast Kuiper Belt, where it will study another of the ancient, tiny worlds, over a billion miles beyond Neptune’s orbit. The mission will provide information about the surface properties, geology, interior makeup and atmospheres of these bodies and how ‘ice dwarfs’, like Pluto and its largest moon, Charon, evolved. It may also tell us more about four previously unknown moons of Pluto - Nix, Hydra, Styx and Kerberos – which were discovered using the Hubble Telescope.

The Orion: Human-Rated Deep Space Exploration

In 2010, it became the only private company ever to return a spacecraft from low-Earth orbit, and in 2012 made history again when its Dragon spacecraft took cargo to and from the International Space Station. It now runs regular NASA resupply missions and will be transporting crew to the ISS as early as 2018. SpaceX is currently developing the Falcon Heavy, the world’s most powerful rocket, and working on fully and rapidly reusable rockets, which will make space exploration more affordable and reliable. This year it successfully achieved the first reflight of an orbital class rocket.

Planetary Resources: Unlocking the Solar System’s Economy The vision of Planetary Resources is “to expand the economy into space.” The company focuses on developing technology to mine near-Earth X-type asteroids (rich in precious metals) and extract water from C-type asteroids. To this end, they’re developing prospector craft capable of surveying asteroids for prolonged periods and then impacting or landing on them to take measurements. The Arkyd 3 deployed into low-Earth orbit from the ISS in July 2015 and successfully tested its core prospecting capabilities. Arkyd 6 is scheduled to launch this year to test increased prospecting and space-based observation technologies. Before mining precious metals, Planetary Resources intends to produce fuel in space from water-rich carbonaceous chondrites that can be broken down into highly efficient LOX/ H2 rocket fuel. Take some... Traditional values and service Established in 2003, The Kitchen Depot is a family-owned and run business that remains true to our founding values of honesty, integrity and sheer professionalism. We take immense pride in our reputation for service and commitment to our customers, with more than half of our business coming from customer recommendations to their family and friends.

...add a dash of… Quality and Value

All of our kitchens are manufactured to an exceptionally high German specification, on site, in our own factory and by our own people. That way, we have total control over the product quality, the production timescales AND the manufacturing costs. With no middle-man – you buy direct and we are able to pass these time and cost savings directly onto our customers.

…then a big chunk of…

Ownership and Responsibility

Unusual in this insincere world, admittedly. But we mean it. We are totally committed to providing you with the best kitchen, at the best price, installed with the highest level of service and professionalism. And on the exceptionally rare occasion that something could have been done better – we hold our hands up – and put it right. Fast. No fuss. No hassle. No argument. Just sorted.

...a soupçon of…Harmony At The Kitchen Depot, we know that we are only as good as our people. They ARE The Kitchen Depot brand. That’s why we look after our staff every bit as well as we look after our customers. Because we know that happy workers, pulling together in harmony, make for happy customers.
