What Degree to Pursue There are several considerations when planning to attend school for nursing. The three main types of nursing are, Licensed Practical Nursing, Registered Nurse, and Nurse Practitioner. A licensed practical nurse takes the least amount of time to obtain. Depending on your availability for classes, it will take approximately 8-10 months to earn this degree. The benefits of this degree are obviously the fact that it takes less than 1 year to begin your career. For anyone that may have financial limitations, an LPN course may be the one to fit within your budget. If you do pursue an LPN certification, depending on where you opt to work, there may be tuition reimbursement if you decide to get and RN certification later. If you have selected to obtain a Registered Nurse Certification, you can expect to attend school 2-4 years depending on what degree you pursue. An Associate's degree will take 2 years, and a bachelor of science in nursing will take 4 years. A Nurse Practitioner will earn a BSN first, and then continue an additional 12-24 months of schooling, depending on the area of specialty.
