Overcoming IV Anxiety

Overcoming IV Anxiety Anxiety and stress are synonymous with the nursing profession. While a little anxiety can keep you going, too much anxiety or tension can be devastating to mental and physical health. Extended periods of stress and tension in the body can cause various medical illnesses such as heart attack, depression, stroke or a suppressed immune system. Shift workers such as nurses can experience unique challenges like these in their professional life. So if you are finding it hard to deal with anxiety, stress or fear, here are five tips that will help quell those feelings. Find a Distraction Nurses can avoid anxiety about the same amount of time fish can avoid water. As a nurse, when you feel depressed or stress begins to sink in, distant yourself from the activity at hand and take a few deep breaths. Take a walk, listen to your favorite song, and indulge in an activity that refreshes you. This will help your ability to focus. Take it a Day at a Time When it comes to dealing with stress and anxiety, do your best to not fear the consequences. If you are more concerned about the future, it will become difficult to concentrate on the present. While you may be 95% correct in predicting the future, the 5% can make a world of difference. Therefore, do not anticipate negative results, rather work towards the wellbeing of your patients. Positive Affirmations Another great way to relieve stress is to write positive statements that make you feel good. Carry a small notebook with you and write down positive statements as you think of them. This way, whenever you feel low or negative, you can open the notebook and gain positive reinforcement. Be Grateful It is human nature to get depressed in a stressful situation. However to remain positive in a dreadful situation, think about something you are grateful for. Take a few minutes to write down the things you have been

blessed with. This will consist of things like your family, children, partner or anything you think you are lucky to have. So next time you are in a stressful situation, review the list and think of all the positive aspects of your life. This will reduce stress significantly. Manage Tasks If you are overwhelmed by a task, divide it into smaller tasks and then complete the individual task with ease. Breaking down a major task into simpler, smaller tasks, will make the job less stressful and more manageable. It might be difficult to break up a task into smaller sections, so try asking for help to complete said tasks on time without feeling anxious. Your mind controls everything. Make sure you are at peace with yourself. By capturing your thoughts, you will become less anxious. Tell yourself that the situation will pass and give yourself hope, and that nothing is uncontrollable.
