The core of the hospital

The Core of the Hospital Many nurses wonder what goes on behind those closed doors, where decisions and changes are made. The core/heart of the hospital consists of a group of people generally referred to as the board. The board does not make all of the decisions regarding the hospital, but they make a lot, and often have to approve decisions made by others. A Typical Board Meeting A little coffee and juice, and few doughnuts and bagels, and they are off, ready to hear what is going on in the hospital. -

First order of agenda is that the head of Radiology is requesting an open MRI. Because of the significant cost, most members voice their disapproval. At this point the head of Radiology is summoned, and pleads her case. She agrees, the cost is an important factor, however she estimates the cost will be recouped in 2 years. She explains that in the last ninety days, they have turned away 11 patients due to size, and 46 patients due to being claustrophobic. The patients went to another facility that offered an open MRI. One board member was then on board, however others wanted more studies done over the next 30 days prior to making a decision. This is left for discussion at the next meeting. Second order was an award ceremony for nurses. This has been an annual tradition for 11 years; however, some nurses feel it is becoming stale. The question is put out to consider other options for recognizing outstanding nurses. Third order was holiday dÊcor. One staff member brought up the fact that he felt the Christmas decorations were inappropriate. A vote was taken, and it was unanimous, the decorations remain. Fourth agenda was discipline procedures. A doctor on staff was told he could not continue to treat a patient that was already admitted. The patient was diabetic, and had multiple complications. The insurer felt they could be cared for at home, and up to this point the hospital director agreed. The attending physician, who had hand on contact with the patient, was convinced this would cause a significant downward turn in the patient’s care. The board now voted to postpone a decision on this matter, as the vote was divided. Related:
