What is Prader Willi Syndrome? Imagine never being full, and constantly feeling like it's been days since you have consumed food. That is exactly what having Prader Willi is like. It’s a rare syndrome, so you should be aware of the signs in case you come across a patient who suffers from it. Prader Willi Facts Prader Willi is a complex genetic disorder. It cannot be prevented or cured, and there has yet to be a discovery as to why it occurs. It affects appetite, growth, metabolism, cognitive function, and behavior. Most people with this condition have very low muscle development, and are short in stature. They have an incomplete sexual development and often are diagnosed, with developmental disabilities. They have very slow metabolisms, and continuous feelings of being extremely hungry. Many suffer from diabetes, as life threatening obesity is a trait of Prader Willi. Those afflicted with Prader Willi must have strict guidelines. People with Prader Willi must have controlled environments. This is primarily locked pantries and refrigerators. All food and drinks must be kept under lock and key at all times, as they lack the ability to control food intake. Genetic clinics work with PW patients frequently, as it is the most common cause of genetic obesity. This condition is found equally in males and females, and in all races around the world. When Does Prader Willi Occur? PW occurs as a genetic error at the time of conception; however the reason is yet to be determined. Scientist do know that there is a lack of several genes, which affect the chromosome 15. Prader Willi claims lives much earlier than the average life span, which is mainly due to, obesity. Behavioral Issues Many people with Prader Willi are viewed as having behavioral issues. Most of the behavioral issues revolve around food, as that is a constant obsession. A Young lady, 24 years of age, struggles with her condition of Prader Willi. She was followed for a typical 8 hour day in an attempt to understand this rare condition.
