What Your Scrubs Say about You

What Your Scrubs Say about You One of the perks of being a nurse is that you get to wear scrubs to work. They may not be the most flattering attire, but let’s face it; they are simple to care for. Wash, dry, and you are done. They are generally comfortable to wear, and are cool, which is great when you are running from room to room to see your patients. While many people are putting on that freshly dry cleaned shirt, that suit and tie, or struggling to walk on a wet ground in heels, as a nurse, you can appreciate your comfortable scrubs and the shoes that go with them. Prepare For Disasters So you just got to work, and you are in your favorite pair of scrubs when the patient you are tending to regurgitates, with you in the line of fire. Obviously you want to change out of those scrubs right away. You cannot walk around like that, so what to do next? If you have been a nurse for very long, you will most likely have an extra set of scrubs in your locker, so you can go change right away. However, consider the fact that the day may not improve much, and you could end up needing yet another set of clean scrubs before your shift is complete. When finances allow, stock up on scrubs; keep an extra 3-5 sets in your locker, you never know what the day may bring. Related: Is Social Media Important for Nursing? Checking Yourself in the Mirror When you first walk into the room of your patient, they should feel a sense of relief and help, for whatever ails them, help has arrived. Provided you present yourself well, and those scrubs are crisp and clean, your patients will have confidence in you as their nurse, and provide you with respect as their health care provider. However, if you walk in the door and your patient sees dirty scrubs, you can bet they are going to wonder about the care they are about to receive. Medical facilities are sterile environments, and a nurse in dirty scrubs can ruin that feeling of being cared for in a clean facility by properly trained staff. A quick change of your scrubs if you spill something on yourself can make a big difference in how your patients, coworkers, and superiors see you. Remember, those scrubs represent you, and how much pride you have in yourself. No one wants a nurse that does not have a certain amount of confidence and pride, so in a way the scrubs say it all, keep them clean and check them in a mirror several times during your shift to ensure they remain clean. Investing in Scrubs You may want to check out several brands of scrubs, and decide which ones you are most comfortable in, and that looks appropriate for your body type. It’s best not to spend a fortune on scrubs; they go through many washings and drying, often in hot water, so they may not hold up as well as other clothes. Regardless of how much you love a certain pair of scrubs, there is going to come a time that you need to replace
