Join us for a cultural evening this October at Bath’s beautiful Assembly Rooms. Pop up Opera will be performing La Tragédie de Carmen – a reimagining of Bizet’s famous masterpiece by Peter Brook which is an intense and tragic tale of unhinged love and jealousy. Brook collaborated with composter Marius Constant to create a journey through much of Bizet’s memorable music, including ‘Habanera’, Escamillo’s Toreador Song and Don Jose’s Flower Song, together with powerful new passages. This dark and thrilling piece is directed by John Wilkie – a familiar tale but not as you’d expect it. Dining packages are available with a Spanish theme – choose from the £30 Toreador package which includes a ticket and a delicious Spanish chicken stew with chorizo, paprika, olives and saffron mash, or the Habenera package which includes a ticket and a vegetarian spicy bean, tomato and spinach stew. Pop-Up Opera is an innovative touring opera company which aims to broaden the appeal of opera and to challenge the way that opera is performed, by taking it into unusual spaces and making it intimate and engaging. The company aims to reach those who are hesitant about opera, as well as dedicated opera lovers. This is the second opera hosted by Bath’s Historic Venues at the Assembly Rooms, in July this year, the group performed a Mozart Double Bill which was hugely popular and was very well received with many of the audience complimenting the performers for such an entertaining evening. La Tragedie de Carmen will be performed in French with English captions and has a running time of 1 hour 20 minutes. Adult tickets £22, Student and under 18 ticket £19. Due to the nature of this piece, our recommended audience age is 12+. Doors open at 6.00pm for diners with a performance start time of 7.30pm. To book tickets visit www.bathvenues.co.uk/ popupopera

Gill McLay says “We have introduced a new initiative called Share The Story. Our aim is to reach more children who don’t have the chance to come to the festival. We wanted to ensure that every child could experience the magic of meeting an author or illustrator. The scheme offers everyone the chance to donate £5.00 to a fund when purchasing their own tickets. 100% of their gift will give other children the chance to come along and join in. We work closely with appropriate organisations and schools to make sure story tickets reach the right children. These donations can be made online or at Bath Box Office. We encourage everyone to get involved as we know that events of this kind can be a real inspiration for children and turn them into enthusiastic readers and budding writers.” Opening this year’s 10-day festival is the amazing Waterstones Children’s Laureate, author and illustrator of the hugely popular Charlie and Lola series, Lauren Child. This event will be chaired by one of their artistic directors, Gill McLay. Lauren has also designed this year’s brochure cover.

On stage Elizabeth has performed in many theatre productions in London and New York. She has also toured the USA and the UK with her band Sadie and the Hotheads.
What are you most relishing about playing Veronica in God of Carnage? It’s one of the best, funniest plays of the last ten years, in my opinion, and the character is wound very tightly but also has a liberal, all-embracing outlook - qualities which are at war within the same character. She has good intentions but a lot of suppressed rage, which is so much fun to explore. I’m absolutely loving it and it’s very liberating to be playing a comedic character. What do you feel makes Yasmina Reza’s writing so rich? The more we work on this play the more absolutely amazed I am by it. It speaks to contemporary life in such a subtle, un-spelled-out way. It’s about how we suppress our primitive, animal selves in order to accommodate society and everybody does it in the play in a different way and everybody’s adjustment comes into conflict with everybody else’s. It all spirals out of control over the course of a very short time and the detail of how the characters interact and the tension mounts is mind-boggling. I’ve never been in a play quite like it. It literally plays itself. [Laughs] It takes no work whatsoever. Have you worked with director Lindsay Posner before and how is the experience? We worked together on Martin Crimp’s translation of The Misanthrope at The Young Vic a long time ago. I love working with Lindsay. He’s very hard-working and he loves the process. He’s never lost his passion for it and he’s very careful, specific and thorough in his approach. This 10th anniversary production also features Amanda Abbington, Ralf Little and Nigel Lindsay. Have you worked with any of your fellow cast members before? I did a 24 Hour Play with Ralf Little at The Old Vic and we also did a little radio thing together. But I haven’t worked with Amanda or Nigel before and I’m loving the collaboration. I feel like I’ve really died and gone to heaven. I feel so lucky. For me as an American - from my way distant background because I’ve lived in the UK for many years - it’s such a privilege to be part of the theatre community here. As far as I’m concerned theatre over here is on a much higher level. I probably shouldn’t say that, but the approach, the discipline, the attitude towards the work… I don’t know how I got so lucky. That is honestly how I feel. Did you always know you wanted to be an actress or did you consider other careers? I was young when I started, I was 18, and if I’d thought about being an actress before that it didn’t last very long. I didn’t want to say I wanted to be an actress when I was growing up because I was living in LA and it was too much of a cliché, to be honest, but it felt comfortable and right when I did it. You were still studying at New York’s Julliard School when you were offered your first film role in 1980 in Ordinary People directed by Robert Redford and starring Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler Moore. That must have been exciting but also overwhelming? I’m not sure I really understood what a big deal it was. I didn’t grow up in a showbusiness family; I sort of just stumbled into it. I was doing plays in high school and somebody saw me in a play and brought me in to audition for the film, but I didn’t grow up in an atmosphere of reverence for movies so it was exciting but not how it might have been for somebody who dreamed of being a movie star in a tiny little town and travelled to LA to achieve it. My parents were living in LA but were not part of that singleminded business so it didn’t hang over my childhood in any way. It was kind of cool when I got the part but it wasn’t paralysingly cool. The atmosphere was set by Robert Redford, who I’ve come to realise in retrospect was such a gifted director as well as being an actor and movie star. He was so nurturing. I was doing my first year at drama school at the same time and by comparison that was much more difficult than doing this movie which later became an Academy Award winner. A year later you were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress at the age of just 20 for Ragtime alongside James Cagney. What are your memories of working on the film and of Oscar night? On Oscar night I remember watching it on TV because I was working on another movie with Dudley Moore [Lovesick] and they couldn’t work the schedule around so I could go to the ceremony. It was a different era then. It wasn’t the business it is now, with all the stylists
and clothes and all that stuff. They said ‘Sorry but you can’t go’ and so I just accepted that, plus I wasn’t predicted to win anyway. As for working on the film, I loved it and again I didn’t know how lucky I was. There’s no way you could know at that age. It was all mixed up in leaving home for the first time, we shot at Shepperton studios so it was my first trip to England, and there wasn’t anything about it that wasn’t new for me. It was so vivid and amazing on many levels and I made friends that still to this day I feel so close to and who became kind of like my family, like Mandy Patinkin and Michael Weller, who wrote it. It was really a seminal time.
"
I was doing my first year at drama school at the same time (as working on the film 'Ordinary People') and by comparison that was much more difficult than doing this movie which later became an Academy Award winner.

Since moving from America to the UK two decades ago you’ve done lots of theatre. What do you most enjoy about stage work? It’s so satisfying. I’m not the first to say this but your experience goes from the beginning to the end in one night and you feel like you’ve done something, whereas filming is so itty-bitty and you’re so not in control and so not the author of your own performance despite how much you try to make believe you are. I love many aspects of film work but there’s not the same gratification that you get from riding the whole arc of the performance in one night, but it’s nice to go back and forth between theatre and film and TV. What have been your career highlights across both stage and screen? Doing Three Days of Rain at The Donmar with Colin Firth and David Morrissey was really special. I loved doing The Misanthrope because it was the first play I did in London so that was a special opportunity. I’ve just worked on a film called The Chaperone which I developed from Laura Moriarty’s book and got Julian Fellowes to write the screenplay. We just shot that in New York and that’s another special project because it was a dream of mine that came to fruition. It’s a period piece we managed to shoot in New York on a small budget and I think it’s turned out great. I will always treasure the memory of that experience because it was such a miracle. Do people still recognise you as Cora from Downton Abbey? Because Downton is the thing I’ve done that so many people have seen it’s the one that generally they clock onto if they recognise me but it’s not a big part of my consciousness because I look so different in real life. How do you juggle acting with being a singer-songwriter with Sadie and the Hotheads? For me it’s about following where fate is taking me at any given moment. If I have an opportunity in music I’ll always take it if I can because I find it so exciting. It’s a relatively new thing for me and I love getting to work with great musicians and exploring. It’s not something I go into with an expectation of making a living from it, but I’ll always run to music when I get a chance because it’s so much fun. Have you visited Bath before and how will you be spending your downtime when you’re here? I visited Bath when my husband [Simon Curtis] directed Otherwise Engaged at the Theatre Royal in 2005 but I haven’t performed there so I’m looking forward to it. I was only there for a short time so I’m really looking forward to exploring it further. As for the theatre itself, I love feeling that the ghosts of English greats have performed somewhere before me. As an American I’m always in awe of that and I can’t stress enough how much Americans revere British actors. It’s not necessarily an inferiority complex but I walk around stages like that with respect and awe.
God of Carnage appears at the Theatre Royal Bath until Saturday 15th September. To purchase tickets contact the Theatre Royal Bath Box Office on 01225 448844 or visit www.theatreroyal.org.uk

The return of Messrs.
Koffmann and White
Two of the UK’s most influential chefs are launching a new restaurant located in The Abbey Hotel on North Parade. Pierre Koffmann and Marco Pierre White, who between them have amassed an incredible six Michelin stars, will combine to create 'Koffmann & Mr White’s', the joint venture will be a brasserie style eaterie serving the kind of classic English and French dishes which have made the two chefs so famous over the years. Chatting to InBath's Craig Maplesden, the pair talk about their 40 year relationship, plans for the new brasserie as well as Pierre's new found interest in 'Bath Chaps'. Many congratulations on your new restaurant ‘Koffmann and Mr White’s’. What will the ethos behind the new venture be?
Abbey Hotel has a brilliant central location and together we’re looking forward to creating a fantastic new restaurant for the city.
PK: For us we want to create a restaurant that brings the best of classical French and British cooking together.
The new restaurant is in a fantastic location, inside the charming Abbey Hotel on North Parade. How much does the history of the building add to the dining experience?
You’ve known each other for over 40 years. Who first broached the idea of opening a restaurant together and why now? PK: It was both of us really. We were just talking about food and restaurants and the idea came up quite organically. Why now? Well, when is it ever the right time. We’re both quite spontaneous and are excited to get back in the kitchen again to design the menu.
PK: The hotel’s building and history helps to create more of a destination for its diners. Whether they’re guests at the hotel or tourists travelling to try our food and explore the city. Can the history and architecture of a building help with designing a menu?
I remember giving Marco a job at La Tante Claire - he was late for his first two shifts, but quickly returned to my good books when he boned a delivery of ducks and pigeons for me - they were absolutely perfect. I remember giving Marco a job at La Tante Claire - he was late for his first two shifts, but quickly returned to my good books when he boned a delivery of ducks and pigeons for me - they were absolutely perfect. MPW: For many, many, many years I reflected on my career and one of my deepest regrets was not spending more time with Pierre in the kitchen. I am looking forward to being the apprentice once again. Bath is already known as a bit of a culinary hotspot. What do you make of the current food and drink scene in the city, and what can ‘Koffmann and Mr White’s’ add to this? PK: I love the city and as well as being steeped in history, the restaurants scene is definitely evolving, but we think there’s a gap for Koffmann & Mr White’s.
PK: The hotel has a fantastic outdoor space so we’ll definitely include some lighter, more alfresco dishes on our menu. What can we expect to see on the menu this Autumn? PK: We’re still firming up the menu but definitely some classic French dishes for me such as a terrine and escargots. The kitchen is where I am happiest, so it’s a joy to be working on new dishes, and to be working with Marco again. I know the Marco has described Pierre’s 'Pig’s trotter with chicken mousse line, sweetbreads and morels' as your 'favourite dish of all time’. Have either of you tasted the famous ‘Bath Chaps’? PK: No, I haven’t. What is this? I’m intrigued…
MPW: Personally, I’m also thrilled to be opening in Bath, a city which is very close to my heart. The

The famous Bath Chaps
Et voilA, Pierre!
The famous Bath Chaps Pierre Koffmann, the Michelin starred chef soon to arrive in Bath for the opening of his new restaurant Koffmann & Mr. White’s located at the Abbey Hotel, may not be alone when he said he had never heard of Bath Chaps. The original Bath Chaps comprised of pork tongue wrapped in pork cheek, marinated in a brine and herbal mixture for two weeks, then baked and rolled in breadcrumbs. Chaps, the lower half of the pig’s cheeks, had a resurgence in popularity in the 1980’s, and is the only surviving regional dish left in Bath, a city that used to boast Bath Chine, Bath Polony and Bath Tripe throughout its menus. To help revive the dish for modern day diners, Rupert Taylor, Head Chef at the Abbey Hotel has put an autumnal twist on the regional classic to help Pierre feel at home in Bath when the new Koffmann & Mr. White’s restaurant opens in October. Rupert’s recipe, Cider Braised Bath Chaps, which can be made at home, includes: 1 large onion, 3cm dice 3 carrots, 3cm dice 1 garlic bulb, halved 2 Braeburn apples 5 sprigs of thyme 2 sprigs of rosemary 12 sage leaves 2 bay leaves 8 Saddleback pork cheeks, 300ml Midford honey cider 1 sprig of sage 2 bay leaves, fresh 500ml brown chicken stock 500 ml brown beef stock

• Trim the cheeks of fat and sinew and marinate in the cider along with diced onion, carrot, garlic and apple cover with cling film. Place in the fridge to marinate overnight. • The next day when you are ready to cook, strain off the cheeks and diced vegetables, making sure to reserve the marinade. • Place a shallow, heavy-based saucepan over a high heat and add the rapeseed oil. Once hot, seal the marinated pork cheeks until lightly golden brown all over. • Remove the cheeks from the pan and place in a colander over a bowl to drain off any excess oil. • Add the vegetables to the same pan and cook until golden brown. At this point add the herbs and diced apples and cook for 5 minutes. Add the cider marinade and reduce by half. Head Chef, Rupert Taylor
Pierre Koffmann • Place the browned cheeks into the pan, then pour in the stock, bring to the boil, and reduce to a gentle simmer place in the oven at 140 degrees c for 2 1/2 - 3 hours. Serve with creamy mash potatoes and seasonal vegetables. Rupert comments: “I’m excited to be working alongside the culinary genius of Pierre and Marco later this autumn when the new Koffmann & Mr. White’s restaurant opens in Bath. Whilst Pierre will bring his French flair and knowledge to the Abbey Hotel kitchen, we hope to show him some of the gastronomical delights from Bath and the South West. We’ll be sharing the Bath Chaps recipe with Pierre as we continue to craft the menus for the eagerly awaited opening”. www.abbeyhotelbath.co.uk @KW_Bath

Christmas gifting
This Christmas, treat someone special to the opportunity to explore Bath's Historic Venues with gift vouchers for the Pump Room Restaurant. The Grand Pump Room was built in the early 1790s, and soon became the destination for high society to meet and ‘take the waters’ from the hot springs while enjoying lavish entertainment. Famous authors such as Jane Austen mentioned it in her novels Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, as a place where "every creature in Bath was to be seen…”. And Mary Shelley wrote the iconic Frankenstein while staying in lodgings next door.

West Country Wine with Seafood
As a Wine Writer and Wine Educator – I belong to the Circle of Wine Writers and the Association of Wine Educators – I am often being asked to select an appropriate wine with Seafood.
My experience goes back to the early 1970’s when I first started to understand wine for its difference, taste and style. This is something that most wine drinkers have some knowledge of realising that a defined Barolo from Italy or a massive Shiraz or Cab Sav from Australia will probably be too powerful to match the delicate sweet notes of Lobster, Crab, Octopus or Scallops. The big bruising tannins and power of this kind of wine will simply dominate the delicacy so it has to be White Wine, Sparkling Wine or Rose to help lift the flavours enabling total enjoyment of our very special West Country Seafood. Eternal favourites such as Muscadet and Chablis will always hit the spot with their minerality, dryness and length of taste – the criteria for balancing with Seafood, Shellfish and Fish. These wines rarely let you down and are readily available on Wine Lists, Supermarket and Wine Merchants shelves. But it’s our West Country wines that I wish to extol the virtues of as we come into autumn and the channel Seafood is at its very best. Vintages and volume in the local Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset vineyards at ok as we speak but do check your favourite tipple as the best wines are always in demand. Here goes with a recently tried parcel of extremely good wines sourced from the West Country, Wines from the Exe estuary have impressed over the last few years with the lovely Brickhouse Vineyard in Mamhead Nr Dawlish producing a rare Sauvignon Blanc offering an aperitif, gentle style of young. Lovely with simple pan fried Hake or John Dory scented with fresh herbs and a squeeze of Orange! Buy directly from vineyard www.brickhousevineyard.co.uk. Yearlstone Vineyard at Bickleigh near Tiverton has been amongst my favourite Devon wines for many years and has won many medals at national and international wine competitions over the years. for a few years! I would love this wine with our wonderful River Yealm Oysters for a bigflavoured match! www.yearlstone.co.uk.
Sharpham Vineyard is situated in one of the UK’s most beautiful vineyard locations on the incline of the meandering River Dart nr to Totnes. For over 30 years the professional team have been elaborating award-winning Devon wines of distinction. Amongst my current favourites is the amazingly juicy Sharpham Whole-Berry Rose 2016 - a multi-award winning wine showing crushed red fruit with balanced acidity enabling the wine to be at its best over a few more years yet! This is a perfect Aperitif going into the first course. Do match with Seafood Tapas or Grilled Mackerel for a perfect match. www.sharpham.com for on-line purchases and stockists. New and exciting wineries and vineyards are now in production in Devon and Cornwall (Polgoon and Trevibban Mill) that deserve a visit, many offering excellent restaurants and bistros on site for a jolly lunch. I recently visited an excellent vineyard and winery in Cornwall namely Knightor situated near to the Eden Project and the village of Trethurgy. Excellent winemaking (plus a very good wedding venue) with a refreshingly open-minded approach has created some first rate wines. If I were to choose one wine I would plump for the exquisite Knightor Madeleine Angevine 2017. This is a full-flavoured fruit and mineral driven wine of distinction, particularly good with Turbot, Dover Sole and Sea Bass, fish with attitude that demand a wine to suit. This is just that wine! Go to www.knightor.com for directions for winery and restaurant.

Cooking on a Bootstrap by Jack Monroe Publisher: Bluebird RRP: £ 11.19 (Paperback)
The Cork has something to offer everyone this Autumn
The Cork is situated in the heart of Bath, just around the corner from the famous Thermae Spa. The décor incorporates the gorgeous limestone with a cool retro feel. Comprised of two bars, two-vaulted party pods, a conservatory and what is arguably one of the best heated beer gardens in Bath, The Cork has something to offer everyone.
Jack Monroe is a campaigner, food writer and activist. Her first cookbook A Girl Called Jack, was a runaway bestseller selling nearly 60,000 copies. The sequel Cooking on a Bootstrap makes budget food fun and delicious, with 118 incredible new recipes including Fluffy Berry Pancakes, Self-Love Stew, Marmite Mac ‘n’ Cheese and Hot Sardines with Herby Sauce. Chapters include Bread, Breakfasts, A Bag of Pasta and a Packet of Rice, Spuds and Eat More Veg. There are vegan, sweet and what Jack calls ‘contraband’ dishes here, as well as nifty moneysaving tips. With her trademark humour and wit, Jack shows us that affordable, authentic and creative recipes aren't just for those with fancy gadgets or premium ingredients.
The Cork offers a fantastic range of Whiskies, Wines, Rums, Craft Beers, Real Ales, Ciders, Cocktails and much, much more! The food offering suits their style, created to emphasise laidback, relaxed dining. Not reserved just for students, all customers can receive the same discounted rates by downloading the free City Club app.
Keen to help celebrate the end of the working week, The Cork presents ‘The Cork Rewind’ every Friday night, with DJs playing the very best throwback tunes from across the decades.

8 September – 25 November 2018 Husband and wife team Clifford and Rosemary Ellis designed bold, colourful posters and book jackets for clients including London Transport, Shell and Collins. Clifford is also remembered as the founder and principal of Bath Academy of Art, one of the most influential art schools outside London. Rosemary taught alongside him, together with artists including Gillian Ayres, Peter Lanyon and William Scott, whose works feature in this exhibition. This is the first show to profile the couple’s joint artistic work, spanning over 50 years, much of it reflecting their love of nature. Their valuable artistic record of the Bath Blitz forms part of the display. Many of these items are from the Ellis family archive, which was given to the Gallery and Bath Record Office in 2016. A Quest for Wellness
Contemporary Chinese Art by Zhang Yanzi until 12 November 2018 From boiling herbal ingredients for an infused concoction of warmth, to drawing spiritual solace from the mysteries of the universe, our search for wellness requires medicine to be active rather than reactive. For Beijing-based artist Zhang Yanzi, wellness is a quest for mental and physical reassurance. In the modern world, as we embrace the scientific distillation of medical wisdom into

pills, so too, do these pills give us a feeling of reassurance and calm. They become our contemporary recourse to remedy and fulfil our need for wellness. In this exhibition, Zhang Yanzi explores our common frailties and shared humanity, investigating the nature and meaning of wellness in China, its history, and its modern counterpoints from a Chinese perspective. We invite visitors to be open to a breadth of approaches to wellness and to experience psychological refreshment.

Designed by Washington DC-based landscape architecture firm Oehme, van Sweden, the New American Garden is its first European commission, which includes a series of American-themed flower beds and trails which enhance the existing landscape and views over the Limpley Stoke Valley. The garden will feature many native US plants including trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs and will follow the freeform style made famous by the firm’s founders, Wolfgang Oehme and James van Sweden. The garden will see the introduction of a natural amphitheatre which will enable the Museum to host concerts and other events. A new ticket office will serve as the entry point to the Museum and Gardens along with an accessible path providing a winding way through the new features. The work of renowned international sculptor Angela Connor will also feature, with the siting of six larger-than-life portraits of key figures in American history.
Lacock’s Mythical Creature family trail
Imagine you have been sent on a quest by your Head Creaturologist to find Lacock’s mythical creature, rumoured to be lurking in the woodland. There are eye witness accounts of its sightings and even clues left by the creature revealing its existence. Your quest is to find out what this mythical creature looks like by finding evidence. Beware if you do come across it, it has a certain magical power and it is not afraid to use it.
The New American Garden will transform the American Museum’s visitor experience and with new landscaping, and planting will provide a horticultural insight into the flora and fauna of the United States.
PEACE: Heinrich & Palmer
The first in a series of three contemporary art installations at Lacock Abbey Anna Heinrich & Leon Palmer are two UK artists who work in collaboration. They are known for their multi-media installations and interventions, responding to different locations and using a diverse range of materials and technologies. Best known for their immersive installations involving light, illusion, projection, sound and architecture, they will be creating a unique piece for us at Lacock, within the abbey’s cloister. “There is an atmosphere that becomes apparent when entering Lacock that time has slowed down. Our installation will pick up on this and create a space through which the slow and ancient erosion of the site can appear to flow like a time-lapse sequence” they said. ‘PEACE: Heinrich & Palmer’ is on display in the Chaplain’s Room within Lacock Abbey from 15 September – 13 January 2019 and is free with normal admission to the property.
Head Gardener Andrew Cannell explains that “The New American Garden is a hugely exciting project with over 12,000 new plants thoughtfully arranged by Oehme Van Sweden in bold, naturalistic swathes. Visitors in September will see the garden at its very beginning and over the years can return to see it grow and develop into something very special.” Celebrity gardener Alan Titchmarsh will officially open the New American Garden on Saturday 15 September. The day will feature live music and historical characters in the Mount Vernon Garden giving a flavour of life in 18th century Virginia. Head Gardener Andrew Cannell will be on hand to answer questions about the garden on guided tours. Visitors will also see the launch of an intimate exhibition of fourteen portrait busts. ‘Face to Face with Angela Conner’ will be on display from the 15 September to 28 October. The American Museum & Gardens will be free to visit on Saturday 15 September as part of Heritage Open Days. For more information please see: americanmuseum.org

The Boyz are back in town!

Boyzlife brings together members of two of the biggest boybands in history, Boyzone and Westlife, to perform a whole host of their biggest chart hits. Keith Duffy has enjoyed huge success with Boyzone, including 6 UK number one singles and 16 out of 17 of their first single releases making the Top 5. With 5 number one albums also to their credit, Boyzone achieved worldwide sales of over 25 million. The unmissable Boyzlife show has already been performed for over 20,000 adoring fans since the pair came together in 2016. With two completely sold out tours under their belts in partnership with Hilton Hotels, as well as their unforgettable 2017 December Christmas Tour, this is an evening that is certainly not to be missed. Here, Keith Duffy gives us an insight into the show, his favourite Westlife song to perform and lets rip on Brian's worst habit! You are coming to Komedia, Bath, as part of your UK Tour, and have chosen some very intimate venues to perform at. Is the aim to make the shows ‘up close and personal’?
If I could of recorded a Westlife song I’d say it would have to be ‘Flying without Wings’, it’s an iconic pop song and my favorite Westlife song! The fans love it.
Absolutely, Obviously we’ve performed in massive arenas and although that’s a great experience, it’s also nice to get up close and personal with our fans. Brian and I like to engage with the audience and take them on a journey with us, we talk to them and even get into the audience and make them part of the show.
Have any of your former bandmates come to see the gigs?
Will the show contain songs, anecdotes and stories of your careers so far? The show is predominately songs. We’ve over 21 UK No.1s and from the feed back through social media, it has become very obvious that the fans want to hear the hits, so we try to give them what they want!
Yes, Shane Lynch has been to a few of our shows and actually has joined us on stage for a few songs. You’ve now toured for a couple of years together. Who has the worst habits? Not to be one to point out the obvious, but Brian takes pride in his farting !! Have you been to Bath before, and if so, what do you like most about the city?
Brian and I like to engage with the audience and take them on a journey with us, we talk to them and even get into the audience and make them part of the show. How did the idea of touring come about?
Over 2 years ago, Brian and I met up and discussed working together. The idea was for Brian & I to join together in a tour doing a autobiographical style show about our 25 years in the business. We toured that show twice and it sold out. The new tour show is more music based show, by the request of the fans. You’ve already sold out two previous tours. Do you see some familiar faces in the crowd form your Boyzone/Westlife days? Yes indeed, we know all the familiar faces. These guys have grown up with us and now the come along with their kids. Our audience consists of up to 3 or 4 different generations. So, do they still chase you down the streets or are things a little more subdued these days? No we don’t get chased to often down the streets anymore, it’s a lot more civilized these days. Although our mid week shows are lot more relaxed then the weekend, Friday’s and Saturdays can be a little crazy, a couple of glasses of wine changes everything lol If you could have recorded one of the others songs, which would it be and why?
Boyzone played at Bath Cricket ground a few summers ago, it was certainly a gig to remember as the rain never stopped. In fact the ground was flooded and the firebrigade had to help pump the water out of the ground. From the stage, it was a sea of umbrellas but the audience where absolutely amazing and it ended up a great concert .

RickWakeman Wakeman Rik One of the premier rock keyboardists of the progressive era, Rick Wakeman, brings his Piano Odyssey tour to The Forum, Bath on October 19th. Here, Rik chats to Craig Maplesden about the tour, being grumpy, plus run-ins with traffic wardens and a certain children's TV glove puppet. Thank you for taking time out to chat to me. You are bringing your 'Piano Odyssey Tour' to The Forum, Bath on 19th October, what can we expect from the show?
You will be introducing each song with anecdotes and memories to the songs themselves. Can you give us one example from the new tour?
It's a wide mixture of music that I perform on the piano; some of my own, some from artists I have worked with such as David Bowie and Cat Stevens. Also, bands I have been in such as Yes and Strawbs, and music from the Piano Portraits album and the new Piano Odyssey album...All this interspersed with some ridiculous anecdotal stories that I have collected through the years. It's an evening of all emotions from laughter to tears....but mainly laughter!
If I do that, then I can;t use it as everyone will read it!
The show is a musical journey through your career and songs that you have a special connection with. With your extensive back catalogue, how difficult was it to come up with a set list for the tour? It's not easy. there are certain pieces that sort of select themselves as they are pieces that people always request and if I don't play them, then people ask afterwards why I didn't play them! I always add in new pieces and new stories and also try to make new arrangements of the pieces as well. Your cover of David Bowie’s Life On Mars seemed to capture a new legion of fans. Has this been evident in the demographic of those coming to your shows? Certainly it insppired the Piano Portraits album which amazingly was in the top five in the UK for eleven weeks and that certainly brought some new people to what I do which is always lovely.

I also haven't actually decided on my difinitive list yet and It may well change. How's that for a political answer! Your twitter account is @GrumpyOldRik, where you do seem to be grumpy about most things, especially what's on TV. Does going on tour give you a release from the grumpiness, or just offer up more reasons to be grumpy? The thing I like about grumpy is that it's funny. The moans are real and people agree with them but then they laugh. It's a fine line between grump and angry. I always fall over the line of funny grumpy and not into anger, and thankfully almost everything going on around me fuels my grumpiness.
I heard that you had a bit of a run-in with Basil Brush once. Could you elaborate sensitive to the fact that this is a family magazine. It was very funny! I was filming at the BBC and wandered in to the wrong studio where Basil Brush was rehearsing. He looked up and said "Boom, Boom..It's Rik Wakeman. Come here Rik". I walked up to the counter where he was and said "Hello Basil". And he said "I'm rehearsing Rik. Do me a favour and 'Go Away'" I fell about laughing and so did Basil! When was the last time you came to Bath and what do you think to the city? I played a concert a few years back at the Abbey which was wonderful and I spent the day wandering around the city, visiting shops I know well, such as Toppings Book Shop where I also did a reading back in 2009. It's a great city, although I did get a fine for going down a bus lane by accident. What does the rest of the year have in store for you? It's very much concerts and promotion for the Piano Odyssey album, plus preparing a few special Christmas shows. And then, before you know if, it will be Christmas! That means seeing as many of my eleven grandchildren as possible, but as they are scattered all around the world, that's not as easy as it sounds!
You were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes, last year. Was this a great honour or are you not one for awards/honours? I was proud to be inducted but I felt it was ridiculously late for the band which is fifty years old. It's the same for so many bands who come in so late and often great members of these bands have passed away and miss out such as Chris Squire of yes, Jon Lord of Deep Purple and Keith Moon and Jon Entwistle of The Who.

Education Guide 2018
Within our Education Guide, we will take a look at the 'Key Stages' of learning from Early Years to Primary, Secondary education to Post 16. We will give tips and advice to parents as well as speak to some of our local schools, colleges and educational providers to find out how they can help your child on their 'road to learning'.
Pre-school learning Making the right choice for your child, whether it's for nursery or university, is a decision that needs a lot of thought, as well as a serious amount of information, in order to make the right call. Preschool or Nursery will be your childs first, tentative, steps into the education system. It is both an exciting and nerve-wracking time for both you and your child, so being armed with the right information, advice and guidance can make the whole process a whole lot smoother. I know! Scarcely is your baby out of nappies and you are starting to think about enrolling him or her into nursery or preschool. Don't get me wrong, you are under no legal obligation to send your child to nursery - so if you choose, you can skip this section and go straight to primary schools. However, gradually easing your child into the education system may be more benefical - each child is different and you know what's best for your child.
50 inbath
If you do choose to start the 'road to learning' at preschool stage, then the options are as follows: - Playgroups or preschool groups - run in the local community, for a few hours a day. - Private nursery schools - State nursery school or nursery unit of a primary school - Workplace nursery. Many of us aren't lucky enough to have a nursery within our workplace, therefore a decision on which of the options best suits will no doubt have to be based around working hours and the availablility of friends and relations. To find out which options are available within the local area go to www.gov.uk or www.Directgov.uk. These sites will give you details of nurseries, childcare facilities and vacancies.
Despite the tenderness of your childs age, even at three or four, the government has laid out plans for your little one to learn a variety of skills to prepare them for road ahead. This framework of standards (called the Early Years Foundation Stage) is a guidline for playgroups, nurseries and childcare providers to meet so that your child is developing from birth to the age of 5. When deciding on a preschool or nursery for your child it is important to have an idea of how each works. Some nurseries are small, some are big, some are independent, some are council run. Some may be affiliated to a local primary school, some are even owned by national companies. With so much choice available it is no wonder many parents can suffer 'paralysis by analysis' when it comes to making the right decision. Inveritably, most parents, when visiting a preschool or nursery will get a 'gut' feeling; something that just sits right and puts the mind at ease. This is why visiting a number of childcare providers gives you an idea of what is right for you and your little one. This is your first experience of the education system and the better planned you are and the smoother the process is - the more relaxed you will be in future decisions.

Keep an eye out for changes in behaviour
As this is the first time your child will be away from you for any great period of time, it is important for you, as a parent, to be aware of any changes in your childs behaviour. Here are just a couple of possible changes to look out for.
Tiredness:
Early years education With both child and parent having safely negotiated Nursery/Pre-School, your little one is ready for the next step on the education ladder – Primary School. The ‘basic’ school curriculum includes the ‘national curriculum’, as well as religious education and sex education. The national curriculum is a set of subjects and standards used by primary and secondary schools so children learn the same things. It covers what subjects are taught and the standards children should reach in each subject. School like academies and private schools don’t have to follow the national curriculum but they must teach a broad and balanced curriculum including English, maths and science. Throughout the state education journey there are a series of 'Key Stages' that make up the national cirriculum. In Primary education, there are two 'Key Stages':
Key Stage One: (Ages 5 – 7)
The main subjects that are focused on KS1 are Maths, English and Science. Within the first two years of Primary education, your childs will learn a variety of skills from counting forwards and backwards up to 100, addition and subtraction facts to 20. They will start to learn about times tables through the use of simple multiplication and division problems. Children will consolidate their learning of phonics. They will be encouraged to read a wide range of stories and listen to poems which
52 inbath
they will start to recite by heart. Children will also be expected to punctuate sentences with a capital and full stop, and will begin to learn about question marks and exclamation marks. In Science, they will look at Plants, identifying and naming plants and looking at their basic structure. Animals including humans, identifying and naming a range of animals and understanding how and why they are grouped. Everyday materials, looking at their properties. At the end of Key Stage 1, the teacher will formally assess your child’s performance in the form of SATS (Scholastic Aptitude or Assessment Test). These assessments are to measure progression in mathematics, English reading and English grammar, punctuation and spelling.
Key Stage Two: (Ages 8 – 11)
At Key Stage two, your 8 year old will start to expand their learning to incorporate 11 subjects. Along with English, Mathematics and Science are introduced; Information and Communication Technology, Design Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education. At the end of Key Stage 2, SATS (Scholastic Aptitude or Assessment Test) papers will be marked externally/independently but will still cover mathematics, English reading and English grammar, punctuation and spelling. To find out details of each of the LEA primary schools in the Bath and North East Somerset region, visit: www.bathnes.gov.uk
It doesn't matter if your child has already had long days (or even longer days) at day nursery compared to primary school. With your child having to concentrate for longer and take more information on board, don't be surprised that this leads to their brain being even more active than usual. This can result in your child being a little more grumpy or needy that usual. Also, you may find that they wake early in the morning as their minds are still trying to digest the information they have been given.
Bad behaviour or withdrawn at home:
Talk to your child about what is happening at school and also check to see if they are feeling tired. If you can identify a specific problem then you can work with it. Otherwise allow your child time to relax. It may be that they are feeling a little overwhelmed by the experience. Spend time with them and give them plenty of reassurance. If you think this problem is being caused by your child mimicking other children in their class then you will need to explain to them that it is always better to be yourself. No one does you, better than you!
They have a problem with another child:
If they have other friends in the class encourage them to spend time with them and stay close. Teachers soon identify problem children, so if other children are causing problems this is often soon brought under control. If you think a teacher is not aware of a problem child then discuss your concern with them as soon as possible. Early school experiences can stay with a child for a long time so it is important to try to rectify problems of this nature early. One of the most important tips for a parent who's child is entering into education for the first time is to try to create a routine at home. This will help your child to know what is going to happen and helps them adjust to their new life. Most of all, remember that your child hasn't turned into a monster overnight – they are going through one of the most significant changes in their young lives so far, so be patient, relax and communicate with both your child and their teacher.

Secondary schools
St Mark's School
The next step on the education journey covers the ages 11 – 16. There are a few options available at this stage of your childs development, which makes this one of the most important decision you can make for your child - your child is unique, and so is every school. Your job, as a parent, is to find the school that suits your child. Schools across England are funded and managed in different ways and will vary depending on the age of your child – none more so than at secondary school level.
governing body employs the staff and sets the entrance criteria. School buildings and land are usually owned by a charity, often a church.
Voluntary-controlled schools
There are four main types of state schools funded by local authorities. They all follow the National Curriculum and are inspected by Ofsted (the government’s Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills).
Voluntary-controlled schools are a cross between community and voluntary-aided schools. The local authority employs the staff and sets the entrance criteria, like a community school, but the school land and buildings are owned by a charity, often a church, which also appoints some members of the governing body.
Community schools
Academies
State secondary schools
Community schools are run by the local authority, which employs school staff, owns the land and buildings, and sets the entrance criteria (such as catchment area) that decide which children are eligible for a place).
Foundation & Trust schools
Foundation schools are run by a governing body which employs the staff and sets the entrance criteria. Land and buildings are owned either b the governing body or by a charitable foundation. Trust schools are similar, but are run together with an outside body – usually a business or charity – which has formed an educational trust.
Voluntary-aided schools
Voluntary-aided schools are religious or faith schools. Just like foundation schools, the

Academies are independently managed schools set up by sponsors from business, faith or voluntary groups in partnership with the local authority and the government Department for Children, Schools and Families.
City Technology Colleges City Technology Colleges are urban-based, independently managed secondary schools geared towards science, technology and the world of work. They offer a range of vocational qualifi cations as well as GCSEs and A levels.
Special schools
Pupils at a special school have usually been assessed and given a statement of special educational needs (SEN). These may include learning disabilities or physical disabilities.
Some special schools are funded by the local education authority. These could be community, voluntaryaided or controlled, or foundation special schools. Some special schools are independent.
Free schools
Free Schools are normally brand-new schools set up by teachers, charities, community or faith groups, universities and groups of parents where there is parental demand. They will be set up as Academies and will be funded in the same way, directly from central government. They also share with Academies a greater control over their finances, the curriculum, and teachers' pay and conditions.
Grammar schools
Grammar schools are state funded schools which select their pupils based on academic ability. Under the grammar school system pupils take an entrants exam in order to become eligible.
Independent schools
Approximately 7% of the total number of school children in England attend an Independent schools. See more about Independent schools in Bath on pages 66 - 73.

Each school or local Education Authority (LEA) will draw up an admission criteria to decide which children get places in their school. These criteria are different for each school, so you need to do a little bit of homework to make sure you are getting the school of choice. Some handy tips on selecting the right school for your child: Do your research: Ofsted reports aren't everything. Yes, they can build up a picture of policies and grades but they can also show you how a school can 'perform' over a few days. Talk to parents, talk to children who are currently attending a particular school you are interested in. Location: Schools generally select pupils according to distance, so concentrate on schools reasonably near your home (unless you're applying for a particular faith or independent school or if you are applying under particular health grounds/ needs).
Be prepared to ask questions, even difficult ones such as what disciplinary issues have their been. What is the schools policy on bullying? Pay the schools a visit: As mentioned earlier, Ofsted reports are all well and good but there is no substitute for getting a real feel for each school. This is something that we recommend whether you are joining a primary, secondary school or college. Gauge what the children are doing on your arrival, do they look happy, engaged, interested? Make sure you meet the headmaster/mistress. Unless there is a very good reason, the head of the school should meet you to talk to you about how great their school is. They are the face of the school and should be its greatest advocate. Be prepared to ask questions, even difficult ones such as what disciplinary issues have their been. What is the schools policy on bullying? Most importantly, will my child be happy?. Will this school give my child the room to grow and develop academically and socially? If the answer is yes to each of these questions, you have probably got the right school for your child.

Independent schools are self-funding (via charging parents a fee - usually per term) and therefore do not rely on money from the government. This also means that Independent schools do not have to follow the national curriculum albeit they must be registered with the government and are inspected regularly. There are a number of reasons why parents will choose to send their child to an independent school with 522,879 pupils, the highest level since records began in 1974, now attending. Recent research shows (Jan 2017 ISC Census) 91% of all ISC pupils went on to higher education, with 55% going on to a Russell Group university. Some of the main reasons given by parents whose children attend an Independent school include:
Greater academic opportunities
One of the accepted benefi ts of independent schools is that they provide exceptional and challenging educational experiences through extracurricular activities, Advanced Placement courses, and the International Baccalaureate programme, just to name a few.
Smaller classes
Independent schools vary greatly in size, but depending on their teaching style, almost all focus on the importance of small class sizes to individually help students’ weak areas and advance their strengths.
Discipline and respect
Independent schools have reputations for maintaining high standards for discipline and respect. Lower staff-to-student ratios allow for more effective observation and control of school grounds.
Dedicated teachers
In a study completed by the Fraser Institute in 2007, 91 per cent of parents surveyed said the dedication of the teachers was their main reason for choosing private school.
Resources
At private schools, you'll find incredible resources to support student learning in the classroom, sports field, art studio, and beyond. Quality resources provide students with the opportunity to fully explore their interests and talents.
Communication
Parents of children in an Independent school felt more involved in their childs education. From parent breakfast to more frequent meetings, parents felt more included.

Plan to teach all children first aid
Proposals put forward by Education Secretary, Damian Hinds, will mean that children in England will learn first aid, giving them "the tools they need to be ready to thrive when they leave school". Draft legislation says primary school children will be taught basic first aid, such as dealing with head injuries and calling emergency services, while Secondary school children will learn lifesaving skills such as CPR and the purpose of defibrillators. The plan was announced as part of new guidelines on relationships and health education in schools, after research from the British Heart Foundation proved that survival rates in countries that teach first aid in school are up to three times higher. The BHF said that fewer than one in 10 people survive cardiac arrests suffered outside of hospital, with 10,000 people in the UK dying each year as a result. Survival rates in countries that teach first aid in school are up to three times higher, the BHF said.

The decision to put forward the proposals to teach first aid in schools also came after Lord Kerslake's inquiry into the Manchester Arena bombing in May 2017, which found members of the public tried to help the injured and dying but lacked the requisite skills. Mike Adamson, chief executive of the British Red Cross, said teaching children "simple yet vital first aid skills" would save lives.

Setting standards for life
How do the new 9-1 GCSE grades work? 2018 sees thousands of teenagers across England opening their GCSE results to find a new grading system, designed to reflect the fact that the new GCSE content is more challenging and rigorous than before.
How do the grades compare?
A 9 is the highest grade, while 1 is the lowest, not including a U (ungraded). Three number grades, 9, 8 and 7, correspond to the old-style top grades of A* and A - this is designed to give more differentiation at the top end. The exams watchdog, Ofqual, says fewer grade 9s will be awarded than A*s and that anyone who gets a 9 will have "performed exceptionally". A 4 is broadly being compared to a C grade, although Ofqual warns against "direct comparisons and overly simplistic descriptions". It says that, broadly, the same proportion of teenagers will get a grade four and above as used to get a grade C or above. It's confusing, but there are two pass marks which are described as a standard pass or strong pass (4 is a standard pass and 5 is a strong pass). This means that a candidate who gets nine 4 grades has, passed all their exams. However, with the government's school league tables detailing what percentage of pupils achieved a grade 5 or above in English and maths and in the English Baccelaureate subjects, it's hard to imagine that teachers will be content to see their pupils settle for a 4 as a pass.

The reality is that schools will be pushing pupils for at least a 5 and most sixth forms will be looking for students with strong passes.
So some teenagers will have a mix of GCSEs under different marking schemes? Yes, that's right.

The new GCSEs courses include much less coursework than before, with grades in almost all subjects depending on exams. Courses are designed to be more rigorous with exams taken after two years of study, rather than in modules with exams along the way.
Monkton Combe School is an independent, co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 2-18. We pride ourselves on our lively Christian ethos, excellent exam results and our strong pastoral care. At Monkton, we are setting standards for life; giving young people the qualities of character they need to become trusted employees, inspiring leaders and valued friends. Boarding is at the very heart of Monkton, and the unique atmosphere of the School is enjoyed by boarders and day pupils alike.
A broad and varied curriculum
As shown by Monkton’s outstanding exam results over the last five years, including a record high of 51% of pupils achieving A*- A at A Level in 2018, fulfilling academic potential is one of our key priorities. However, Monkton thinks differently. We start with a proactive pastoral environment to develop academically strong enthusiastic learners within a living Christian ethos. Our students work hard and are well motivated, being supported and encouraged through the care and enthusiasm of our gifted teachers, who are committed to delivering lessons that are lively and enjoyable, as well as being rigorous and demanding. Strategies for supporting gifted and talented students are well established and are continually updated and extended.
Busy days and full weekends
One of Monkton’s strengths is the breadth of activities available to pupils at weekends – in fact, many of our day pupils will spend all weekend at school just so they can join in the Monkton social life. Every Saturday afternoon there is a full programme of sporting activities which follow on after morning lessons. There are some brilliant social events hosted by the houses throughout the year and these, together with the music, drama and sporting competitions, keep the students extremely busy.
Transforming lives
Our outstanding pastoral care, strong moral framework and culture of service to others make us an ideal choice for parents looking for a school that will nurture and challenge their child spiritually, emotionally and socially as well as developing their academic potential to the full. We aim to instil our values of confidence, integrity, humility and service in all of our pupils.

Tips for parents on Open Days For parents, it doesn't matter if your child is making their first tentative steps into education or choosing a fi nal University place; the decision of where your child will be educated is very important, not just to you, but more so to your child. Open Days give any parent (and child) the opportunity to witness at first hand the running of a school, its teachers, its pupils and its facilities. Many parents will look at league tables, Ofsted reports and make their judgements based solely on results rather than what is most most important: will your child be happy? Depending on the school, Open Days can be either very relaxed affairs, some can be almost military in their agenda and precision, many can be very staged as if the actors are putting on a performance to potential sponsors. Regardless of which Schools you choose to view, like finding a home you want your child to grow up in, it is always good to look at a few to give you an idea of similarities, differences and generally how staff and pupils behave.
This may sound obvious, but make sure you take your child. Remember it will be them who will be working and learning in this environment so they need to feel comfortable. Whilst you are at the Open Day, try and speak to as many people as you can. Parents who have

children already at the school, they may have a few home truths about the school or its teachers. Talk to current pupils as they tend to use words that aren't false or scripted. If you are on a 'warts and all' tour, look around the classrooms, look at the work, not just the ones at eye level and in the centre of the wall but those that are on the periphery. This will give you an idea of the different levels of ability. During your Open Day you may well be given a talk by the Head or one of the senior staff. They may well tell you that they are a school that has many after school clubs and is a real part of the community but look for signs that back them up. Look at noticeboards, they will tell you how involved the school is.
Open Days are a fantastic way to see first hand the running of a school and meet those who will lead and inspire your child. Most importantly of all, when it comes to deciding your child's future. Trust your instincts.

Post 16
Post 16 The day has finally arrived; the last Friday in June. You've completed your final year in secondary school education and although you've reached the grand old age of 16 it's by no means the end of your road for learning. For those of you born on or after 1st September 1997, it is now law that you stay in some form of education or training until 18. Post-16 options can vary but are full-time. These can consist of a continuation of schooling, whether its a Sixth Form attached to your school or college, an apprenticeship or going into employment with training. This stage can be very confusing, so gathering information about different options is an essential part of this process.
The government have decided to keep all students in the education system until they are 18 because it is widely recognised that if a young person stays in education or training they will have better career prospects, will be less likely to experience unemployment and will earn more. A more highly skilled workforce will also help the country compete in the world economy. Each student, along with their parent, carer or guardian should think about their progression and where their course or training might lead to. It is worth asking schools or colleges what the next step is if the young person succeeds on the level of course or training that they have applied for. It is always best to seek out careers advice at this stage as this can help in your decision making process as well as giving you some impartial advice.

GCSE Maths and English Language:
It is now compulsory for students to achieve an A* - C grade GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English Language. If this is not achieved at the end of year 11 students must study these subjects again in sixth form or a college. Some students will be able to do ‘stepping stone’ courses that help them progress to GCSE C+ grades in these subjects.
AS and A levels:
AS and A levels are the best known of the post 16 qualifications and have an established history in UK education. They are the more traditional route to a university education. Some students may focus on a particular area – for example sciences – and do all their subjects in this area. Other students do a mixture of subjects and keep their options open for post 18 routes. From September 2017 A levels are changing. A-level exams will take place at the end of Year 13, with no marks from AS-levels (if you take these) contributing to the overall final grade. Across the board, there will also be less coursework and fewer practical assessments under the new system (in Wales, practicals will still count in biology, chemistry and physics A-level) - making that exam revision all the more important. Grades will continue to be awarded on an A*- E scale.
New-style A-levels will be introduced in: accounting, ancient history, archaeology, classical civilisation, design and technology, electronics, film studies, geology, government and politics, history of art, law, maths and further maths, media studies, music technology, philosophy and statistics. Most students who successfully study A levels go on to higher education. Other than continuing full-time education at school or college with A and AS levels. Other than continuing full-time education at school or college with A and AS levels, there are a selection of options available those looking to continue their education, Post 16. We have outlined some of these options, opposite.
International Baccalaureate:
The International Baccalaureate, or IB is a programme of education for 16-19-year-old students. The IB is an internationally recognised course, ollowed by students all around the world. Until recently in the UK it was only taught in a minority of independent schools, but is now on offer at some state schools. It is available at about 125 schools in total across the UK, with 190 of these offering the IB as a post-16 option. The IB course leads to a qualifi cation called the IB Diploma, which is very well-respected by universities and is also an advantage if your child is hoping to study overseas.
Further Education and Vocational courses:
Higher National Diplomas (HNDs) are a further education qualification for 14-19-year-olds in England. They’ve been introduced to provide more options for practical learning, and to encourage more

young people to continue studying. Diplomas aim to provide work-orientated skills in a more creative way - so students get practical training and benefit from work experience. There is less classroom-based learning than with A levels. NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualification aare achieved through training and assessment, which is normally on-the-job observation. If your child knows what job they’d like to do, and wants to move straight in to the world of work, an NVQ could be the right choice for them. They can be taken alongside the National Curriculum at GCSE level but are usually taken after 16.
T-Levels:
T levels are new technical study programmes that will sit alongside apprenticeships and A Levels within a reformed skills training system. T levels have been designed to create the skills revolution needed to meet the needs of our economy and are being developed in partnership with Government, business and education. See more opposite.
Apprenticeships:
Initially introduced by former Education Secretary, Justine Greening, the government's T-level Action Plan, has been championed by PM Theresa May, stating that it will “help thousands of people across the country compete globally”.

T levels are new technical study programmes that will sit alongside apprenticeships and A Levels within a reformed skills training system. T levels have been designed to create the skills revolution needed to meet the needs of our economy and are being developed in partnership with Government, business and education.
Although there has initially been scepticism of whether these courses will be ready to be taught in schools and colleges, to a 'consistently high standard' in 2020, current Education Secretary, Damian Hinds stated that “Naming the first 52 colleges and providers where young people will be able to study the first T levels is an important step forward.”
The qualifications are intended as a vocational alternative to A levels in England and will cover subjects including construction, education, childcare and engineering and manufacturing. The first courses are set to be introduced in 2020, with the rest to be available by 2022. “Everyone should be able to have access to an education that suits them, but we know that for those that don’t choose to go to university, the routes into further technical and vocational training can be hard to navigate,” the prime minister said at the end of May 2018. “T levels provide a high-quality, technical alternative to A levels, ensuring thousands of people across the country have the skills we need to compete globally - a vital part of our modern industrial strategy.” the PM continued.
Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to work for a real employer, earn a real salary and gain a real qualification whilst gaining valuable workplace skills and experience.
The 22 planned courses will feature more teaching hours than most current technical programmes and will include a compulsory work placement of between 40 and 60 days.
Anyone living in England, over 16 years old and not in full-time education can apply to be an apprentice. All apprentices must receive the appropriate national minimum wage.
T-levels are currently being aimed at 15 sectors:
Apprenticeship National Minimum Wage rate does not apply to Higher Apprenticeships. All apprentices should work for at least 30 hours a week, apart from in exceptional circumstances.

Key facts about T levels
T levels will be level 3 technical study programmes, based on employer-designed standards and content, which will prepare students for highly skilled jobs and enable them to adapt to meet the skills needs of the future. Students achieving T levels will be able to progress to the highest levels of skilled employment or technical education and training at levels 4, 5 and 6. Progression options will include higher and degree level apprenticeships or higher technical education, including technical degrees. Apprenticeships and T levels will be based on the same set of standards designed by employers and others but there will be differences in the overall content of each programme, to reflect that apprenticeships are mainly delivered in the workplace, and T levels will mainly be delivered in the classroom. Students achieving a T level will have the numeracy, literacy, digital skills and wider transferable skills, attitudes and behaviours needed to succeed in occupations relevant to their chosen route and the wider workplace of the future. T level programmes are substantial and will be high quality. They are likely to be equivalent in size to a three-‘A’-level programme and will have more teaching time built in to enable students to acquire more and better knowledge, skills and behaviours.

She had a challenging year for many reasons, but so thankful she had the opportunity to take stock and reevaluate what she wanted to do as her degree. With the support from BA she has been able to aim high - and since Thursday's results is still on a cloud!” Parent of Holly, A-Level Student These are exciting times for the college. With more students enrolling for academic programmes and attending Holiday Revision courses, Bath Academy has recently expanded into a second building on Chapel Row. “These results give us even more confidence that our way of tailoring learning to the realities of individual differences leads to ordinary young people gaining places at competitive universities and forging successful careers,” says Tim.
Bath Academy Revision Dates:
Alternative pathways to university proves a positive step for students BATH ACADEMY is top of the league tables in Bath and North-East Somerset for value-added in A-Levels, specialising in small classes, intensive revision courses, and personalised tuition to guarantee exam success. Last March, students at Bath Academy were named top of the list for value-added A-Level results in Bath & area for 2017. This year, provisional results have been just as impressive, with an average 2 grade improvement for re-sits and most students gaining places at their firstchoice university. With more emphasis placed on how schools help pupils progress, last year Bath Academy ranked highest of all state and independent schools in the local authority, making greater improvement from GCSE to A Level than in any other local school, and well above average nationally. Tim Naylor, Principal of Bath Academy, said “This was a pivotal moment for Bath Academy as we strive for individual student success with our personalised teaching approach. Student progress has been remarkable both this year and last. Although the school is not academically selective, the most common A Level grade was A*/A and 75% of our first-time students gained places at Russell Group universities. One re-sit student actually made an improvement of 7 grades to A*AB.” The new linear A levels put more pressure on students because the whole subject content is examined in the final exams. That makes incorporating revision throughout the year even more important and working with teachers who fully understand the new types of exam paper and questions is essential. For desired results, exam revision needs to start early. However, fitting in a serious revision programme during term time is not easy with daily homework, making for long study hours and much general stress. Taking a revision course a few weeks into term is as an effective way to kick-start the whole process and ease the stress, providing structure, revision, exam practice and support in one handy package.

The best courses are taught in colleges that have year-round, direct experience of exam-orientated courses, and with teachers who have long experience of intensive and successful studentcentered exam teaching. At Bath Academy, revision students have supervised exam practice every day on top of their tuition and will be offering Saturday morning revision classes to give students the option of extra focused study. Whether it’s a revision course or 2 year A-Level programme, students at Bath Academy learn in a relaxed atmosphere and small classes, many of whom say is crucial for them to gain confidence and achieve their full potential, especially if faced with extra life and learning challenges.

education guide
Apprenticeships Since 2015, the government requires all young people to stay in some form of education or training until at least their 18th birthday. Having detailed the many options available to those 'Post 16' earlier, here we outline information and benefits about apprenticeships as a key route into a successful career.
What is an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16, living in England. There are different entry requirements depending on the sector and job. Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to work for a real employer, earn a real salary and gain a real qualification whilst gaining valuable workplace skills and experience. All apprentices should work for at least 30 hours a week, apart from in exceptional circumstances.
What are the benefits?
Apprenticeships are now available up to degree level and beyond. Over 50 national universities are currently offering a range of degree apprenticeships with more to be confirmed throughout the year.
70 inbath
Earning a salary and paid holiday; Excellent progression opportunities, whether looking to study further or climb the ranks within the workplace; Increased future earning potential – apprentices enjoy marked salary increases on finishing their training and those completing a higher apprenticeship could see increased earnings of an estimated £150,000 over their lifetime.
What levels are there?
There are various levels of apprenticeship to apply for depending on current skills and qualifications. Apprenticeships have equivalent educational levels: Name Level Intermediate 2 Advanced 3 Higher 4, 5, 6 and 7 Degree
6 and 7
Equivalent level 5 GCSE passes 2 A level passes Foundation degree and above Bachelor’s or master’s degree
All apprenticeships include elements of on the job and off the job training leading to industry recognised standards or qualifications. Some apprenticeships will require an assessment at the end of the programme to assess the apprentice`s
ability and competence in their job role. Some apprenticeship vacancies will display the `Positive about disabled` logo meaning the employer has agreed to take action to meet five commitments regarding the employment, retention, training and career development of disabled employees. Any disabled candidate applying for vacancies showing this logo will be guaranteed an interview as long as they meet the requirements for the job being applied for (these policies have recently changed (July 2017)).
Salaries
The minimum wage for apprentices is £3.70 per hour (as of April 2018), but many employers pay more than this. This is dependant on the sector, region and apprenticeship level e.g. some higher apprenticeships pay upto £500 per week.
Future commitments
During last summers Queen’s speech (21 June 2017), the government renewed its commitment to “ensuring people have the skills they need for the high-skilled, high-wage jobs of the future”. New apprenticeships minister, Anne Milton, is focused on creating three million apprentices by 2020.

National Apprenticeships Week 2019
National Apprenticeship Week is coordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service and is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and traineeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy. The objective of National Apprenticeship Week is to increase awareness and take-up of apprenticeships and traineeships. The next National Apprenticeships Week will take place in March 2019.
Positive Impact
A more engaged workforce: 92% of employers who employ apprentices believe that apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce. Lower staff turnover, fewer skills-related vacancies and reduced recruitment costs: 83% of employers who employ apprentices rely on their apprenticeships programme to provide the skilled workers that they need for the future. One in five employers are hiring more apprentices to help them through the tough economic climate. Increased competitiveness: 80% of employers that employ apprentices agree they make their workplace more productive. A better image and greater customer satisfaction: 81% of consumers favour using a company which takes on apprentices.
Degree Apprenticeships: Are they right for you? Degree apprenticeships are similar to higher apprenticeships, but differ in that they provide an opportunity to gain a full bachelor's degree (Level 6) or master’s degree (Level 7). These programmes are being developed by employers, universities, and professional bodies working in partnership. Degree apprenticeships combine working with studying part-time at a university. Apprentices are employed throughout the programme, and spend part of their time at university and the rest with their employer. This can be on a day-to-day basis or in blocks of time, depending on the programme and requirements of the employer. They can take between three to six years to complete, depending on the course level. Currently, the scheme is only available in England and Wales, although applications may be made from all parts of the UK. Degree apprenticeships are still quite new, so there are a limited number of vacancies. It’s anticipated that the number of vacancies will grow over the next year or two. Is a degree apprenticeship right for me? As you will be studying and doing a full-time job, you will need to be committed. You will also be part of a workplace, so you need to be professional, responsible and mature. Although there will be those that tell you a degree apprenticeship is‘second-best’ to a traditional degree, those chooseing the apprenticeships route will need to be disciplined due to the mix of study and full-time work. It is thought that, in time, apprenticeships degrees
may well outstrip traditional degrees becuase of the on-the-job experience you gain. Due to the natue of the degree, those applying must be passionate about their career. These degrees will challenge your committment, academice skills, planning and discipline as well as your energy levels. It is important, when applying for a degree apprenticeship, that you understand you will be interviewed as an employee, as well as a student. You need to present yourself as someone who can contribute in a real job. Then do all of the things you would normally in preparing for a job role, such as finding out as much as you can about the company and the role, so you can ask intelligent questions. It’s an extremely exciting time in the world of apprenticeships, and a degree apprenticeship offers a fantastic opportunity that has the potential to set you up well for the rest of your life. If you are keen to take this route start planning early, and try to get some work experience in the sector you’re interested in. Go to university open days and talk to the people delivering the programmes to find out more. There are many different study options, so think about what would suit your learning style. Bath College: Offering opportunities during and after study
Emily Desborough
Wiktor Blaszczyk
Emily studied at Bath College from 2013-2016 and just two years after leaving has progressed from a Senior therapist to Spa Floor Manager at Center Parcs, Longleat. Her Level 2 qualification was in Beauty Therapy after which she studied both Level 3 Complementary Therapy and Level 3 Spa Therapy.
Wiktor has just completed his Level 3 Business course at Bath College. As part of his course, Wiktor took part in an Erasmus+ placement in Prague earlier, at an organisation called Recola, a bicycle rental company.
Studied: Level 2 Beauty Therapy, Level 3 Complementary Therapy and Level 3 Spa Therapy
From the moment I attended the Bath College Open Evening when I was finishing my exams at school, I knew that I wanted to study and work in the beauty/spa industry. I remember travelling home that evening and I was so excited I finally found a career I wanted to pursue. Bath College provided me with amazing opportunities from performing treatments on real clients to visiting spas and meeting spa managers in the local areas. It was always in my sights to work at Center Parcs as I had holidayed there with my family and I was blown away by the spa facilities. At the beginning of my Level 3 course I saw that Center Parcs were holding an opening evening for beauty therapists. I booked in to attend and sat down with the Head of Department, the Spa Manager and the Senior Therapist to talk about the job role. As I didn't at the time hold the Level 3 qualification I couldn't apply for the role. I got myself another part time job in the industry as a stepping stone along with studying and then I applied for Center Parcs as soon as I qualified and I was lucky enough to get the position of Senior Therapist. I have recently been appointed in a secondment position as Aqua Sana Floor Manager for a few months which is great for my exposure and progression. I feel very lucky and proud to have progressed so far already in a short space of time. In our lives we spend so much of our time at work and to go to work every day to do something I enjoy and am so passionate about it is just the best feeling. A lot of people sometimes assume that beauty/spa therapy is an easy choice and the industry is sometimes stereotyped but that is wrong! There is so much behind the scenes to learn and the training opportunities out there are never ending. It is a job for life you can always go back to and there are so many career paths to take, from spas and salons to trainers, teaching, management, cruise ships and much more!

Studied: Level 3 Business
Completing a work placement is a requirement on my Business course. So I thought, why not do one abroad! My tutors had shared the opportunity with me but the desire to travel, meet new people and throw myself into a completely new environment, made me motivate myself to work hard and earn a place to go to Prague for 4 weeks. Getting to see how a business works internally was a great benefit. My area was in sales for the company’s bicycle-renting project, and my main role was in identifying and making international contacts, in order to introduce the project into cities across Europe. I used my initiative to develop a communication guide from the company’s existing documents, suited to the individual countries which I had to interact with. My confidence, interpersonal skills and problem-solving ability were greatly boosted through this experience. Living away from home in a foreign country in an apartment full of other students, gave me a taste of independence and responsibility, which I would not have had otherwise. Prague is a haven for delicious food, beautiful architecture, museums and general activities, so there is always something to do! My efforts throughout the placement earned me the praise of my boss who asked me to continue working with the company once I returned home, and I gladly agreed! I am still carrying out my tasks whilst completing my Business Course at Bath College, and I know this will look great on my CV when I apply for a job after. The placement made me realise that I prefer developing my skills in an actual workplace. My advice for future participants is to stay focussed on what you are doing and your goals to make the most of the experience. Be flexible and always look for solutions. It was a great experience for me from which I gained a lot of life lessons and skills.

Salisbury campus redevelopment (CGI)
It’s an exciting time to be a part of
Wiltshire College!
Not only have we recently been rated as Good by Ofsted for the second time in three years, but work has also started on a £22million project to redevelop two of our main campuses. A glowing Ofsted inspection graded the College as ‘Good’ having created a “welcoming family atmosphere” where “students across all the campuses work together respectfully, are polite and behave courteously”. It praised teachers, many of whom are industry experts, for helping students achieve their goals and noted pass rates for students taking English and maths GCSE and functional skills qualifications increasing to above the national achievement rates. The College’s mission is about being a vital player in the county’s economic growth, raising skills and attainment, delivering excellence and innovation and inspiring people to achieve.
This is one of the reasons that Life Sciences has been added to the curriculum offer starting this September, to address a skills shortage in the industry in the county. We were delighted to secure £22 million by the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (SWLEP) to create new state-of-the-art facilities and accommodate more learners. Building work to redevelop the Salisbury campus has just begun and will see new Construction, Life Sciences and Engineering and Higher Education centres’. Lackham will also benefit from a new higher education centre as well as a new Agricultural Technology Centre to help boost the rural economy and a robotic dairy milking facility.

Spread out across the county with campuses in Trowbridge, Chippenham, Lackham and Salisbury as well as a dedicated Motorsport Centre at Castle Combe (one of only two in the country based at a race track) Wiltshire College, welcomes more than 12,000 students through the door every year. Some of our students have gone on to win prestigious awards including Adam McGarry who became number 1 landscaping apprentice in the UK after winning the WorldSkills national final, BA Film & Cinematography students scooped a Royal Television Society award for their The Manor and BA Photography student Stuart Bridewell won the British Institute of Professional Photographers Student Open Awards for his series of five photographs. The College is passionate about helping people succeed. 96 per cent of students go onto positive destinations with students working for companies such as British Airways, the Royal Navy, NHS, British Army, becoming self-employed or going to their chosen universities. Every year hundreds of students come to study higher education locally which has many benefits including studying in smaller groups, and more personal time with lecturers. Earlier this year Wiltshire College announced a new partnership with Oxford Brookes to validate its degree programmes in Engineering, Early Years and Computing. This is in addition to offering HNCs, HNDs, Foundation Degrees and Full Honours degrees in partnership with Royal Agricultural University, Bournemouth University, University of Greenwich and Pearson.
Graduation We also announced partnerships with worldclass performing arts academy Wilkes Academy, QinetiQ to boost engineering expertise and Bath & West Innovation to expand reach in land-based qualifications. We are one of very few colleges in the region to have achieved the TEF mark which provides national recognition and quality assurance of its university level courses and the Quality Assurance Agency confirmed its quality and provision as meeting UK expectations in all areas of the review. There really is something for everyone at the College with part-time, full-time, apprenticeships and higher education courses in more than 50 curriculum areas for students joining at pre-16 right up to degree level.

In before Christmas Whether you are buying or selling, there is a distinct advantage to moving home around the festive period. If you are organised and prepared to be flexible then you could grab yourself a bargain. As the housing market typically slows down during the festive period, canny buyers are prept, ready to take full advantage of home buyers offers and vendors who are more serious about moving. If your Christmas wish is to move into a new home over the festive period, then now is the time to look out for the many incentives on offer by home developers, who - like you, are also keen to see you settled into a new home with the tree and decorations up for all to see. Here are some useful tips for buyers and sellers:
Pre-owned
The majority of home owners who are still advertising their home for sale over the festive period are keen to move. They may well be willing to pay stamp-duty fees, removals costs or even drop the price significantly. With both, there is a definite sense of urgency that can be of benefit to you. Be prepared to negotiate, and negotiate hard. If you are flexible, organised and co-operative then you can certainly pick up a bargain. For first time buyers, the process is a simple one. Do your homework, get your finances in order and then play the game. For those who need to sell before they purchase, this becomes a slightly more difficult – but not impossible- task.

New Homes
There are plenty of ways to find a cut-priced brand-new home. Visit smartnewhomes.com which lists developers and also offers advice on incentives like builders paying moving costs, part-exchanging your old home and developers, Help to Buy calculators and more. Home developers are keen to get as many buyers signed up as possible at the end of the year, especially if they are coming towards the end of a particular phase. And, if you can get carpets, curtains and vouchers for major department stores thrown in, then maybe Christmas presents are sorted out as well. Moving into a home gives you have the benefit of just unloading your furniture and placing it wherever you like – maybe the Christmas tree can be the first thing you set up. Also, 'buying new' gives you the security of 10 years building cover as well as a brand-new heating systems that can cope with even the harshest of winters.
Be organised
As mentioned previously, the housing market does slow down in the lead-up to Christmas, which means that there are fewer buyers on the look out. What this also means though, is that there are fewer properties on offer and those looking, tend not to be time wasters. If you are looking to sell your existing house,
there are certain tips that can help you secure the sale over some of your competitiors. Remember, potential buyers will view a number of properties before deciding and therefore yours needs to stand out from the crowd. Here's some tips and advice on how to get your home to the top of the list when it comes to selling:
Less is More
De-cluttering not only makes the property look tidier but also more spacious. Clear surfaces of excess items and if you have children try to limit the amount of toys on show.
Tone Down the Decor
Neutral colours really do improve your chances of finding a buyer or tenant. Not only do people have very different tastes when it comes to colour schemes but neutral colours will allow the potential buyer to feel they can put their own stamp on a new home.
Finances
Make sure you have taken to the steps to secure your mortgage well in advance.
Put Your Buyer’s/Renter’s Hat On
Imagine yourself as the prospective buyer/ tenant viewing your property for the first time. What would you think? Putting your ‘ buyer’s hat’ on helps when preparing your property ready for the market.
Smells
A fresh smelling home always helps. Air the property before any viewing and try to remove any unwanted smells, from bins to animals. You
don't have to go overboard and bake bread or filter coffee, but a pleasent smelling home does make a huge difference.
Perfect planning is the key to a smooth and hassle-free move
so focus on getting your own home on the market and under offer. Save time at the start by instructing your solicitor from day one so they can prepare all the paperwork whilst your estate agent does the viewings.
Keep it Warm
Ensure that your home is warm. Those viewing a property are generally put off if a house or flat feels cold. Even in summer ensure that the property is not chilly!
When you get offers, the position and timescale of the buyer matters just as much as the amount. Is there a chain? Where are their finances coming from? Do they have any aims for timing? If you want to be carol singing in a new neighbourhood, pick the buyer capable of fitting in with your plans and make sure they understand what you want to achieve before you instruct solicitors.
Show Your Property in the Best Light
Good lighting improves the look of any property. Even if it means switching on a few lamps or overhead lights this will make the place look as light as possible. Try and find any darker areas of your home and make these a priority.
Your Garden Can Help Sell Your Home
Don’t neglect your garden when dressing up your property. The garden is an essential part of any home and could help you clinch the deal if it looks good. At this time of year, tidy it up! Rake any fallen leaves, arrange furniture (if not already put away).
Do the Jobs You Have Been Putting off
This means touching up any paint, filling in holes and making any small repairs in order to improve the appearance of your property.
How Clean is Your House?
Give your property a good clean before any viewing and this includes any communal areas. Having a clean house or flat can make all the difference when it comes to making a good first impression.
Carey Gilliland Madison Oakley If you’d like to be unwrapping your presents under the tree in a new home this Christmas, heed the wise words of Benjamin Franklin and make sure you don’t fail to prepare.
Once you’ve sorted out your sale, you are “proceedable”. Get out looking for the next house. If you’re interested in one, are the owners buying on themselves? You might not want to get into a lengthy chain. When you make an offer, state clearly you want to be in for Christmas. If your offer is accepted, get the estate agents to put your timescale on the letters of sale as a “special condition”.
Selling and buying simultaneously may be an exercise in plate spinning at the best of times but doing it to hit a particular holiday date needs careful planning. Lets assume you have a house to sell and you haven’t yet found one to buy – where do you start?
The average conveyancing time is currently 8 – 10 weeks so your agent needs to keep a tight grasp on communication between all parties in the chain. Insist on surveys/mortgage valuations being booked quickly, get searches ordered as soon as contract packs are received, make sure enquiries are raised and responded to promptly. Don’t forget some solicitors and banks knock off early for Christmas so find out last December dates for completion.
My first piece of advice is to concentrate fully on getting an acceptable offer on your own property. Don’t be tempted to go out looking and then try to sell quickly when you’ve found - without knowing exactly how much you’re getting and from whom, you can’t negotiate to buy anywhere
The current median selling time is 56 days. Adding conveyancing time and working back from 21st Dec indicates a start date for selling in the last week of August. However, these are average timescales and over 22% of the Bath market sells in less than a month. Good luck!

NO TIME TO LOSE FOR THOSE WANTING PENTHOUSE PERFECTION News that it is now the last chance to buy a brand new waterside penthouse in Bath will increase the sense of urgency amongst those wanting to live the high life in the centre of the world heritage city.
The shortening supply of brand new top floor pads follows news that the Royal View building at Bath Riverside has now sold out and means the focus of attention has moved onto its sister building, Sovereign Point. Comprising 52 apartments in total, of these, only three are penthouses. Located on the banks of the River Avon they afford spectacular views out across the rooftops of Bath and are not available anywhere else in the city. Anyone who is biding their time thinking more penthouses will come onto the market will soon find themselves bitterly disappointed! It’s a fact Anna Fairman, director at Savills, is keen to stress on those thinking about a move into this property type, and that they can’t afford to wait.
the top of the building. Entering the penthouses, house hunters will be hit with a massive wow factor. The first floor comprises very spacious open plan, living, dining and kitchen areas which are flooded with natural light through the generous floor to ceiling windows. Designed for modern living, these stunning homes enjoys a sleek kitchen and integrated Siemens appliances which include a stylish wine cooler and coffee machine. Offering luxury at every turn, the double bedrooms include fitted wardrobes and a contemporary en suite bathroom. The living areas provide access to the balconies which stretch the full width of each property as well as direct access to the secluded roof terraces which comes via a glass-encased spiral staircase. This leads owners up and outside where they will be able to enjoy far reaching
views across the rooftops of Bath and the surrounding countryside. The roof terraces have plenty of space for outside furniture, sun loungers and potted plants, making them a calm, private oasis in the heart of the city. There is also spacious storage so that outdoor furniture can be put away during the winter months. Each property also comes with two allocated parking spaces which are in the residents’ underground car park. Anna added: “This is the perfect haven for those who enjoy a living space that comes with plenty of room, light and stunning views. Those lucky enough to secure these last exclusive properties will be able to enjoy the trappings penthouse living brings from al fresco dining, soaking up the sun on the roof terrace to the peace and security of a top floor retreat. “There really isn’t anything quite like this anywhere else in the region and with the number of penthouse apartments limited, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.” To make an appointment please call 01225 463517 or visit www.bathriverside.co.uk
Anna said: “For the foreseeable future there aren’t any new penthouse apartments being built in Bath and we don’t know of any other development that has any planned either, especially on the banks of the river. “The three that are currently available in Sovereign Point really are the last in line and our advice for anyone looking for this style of property is they can’t hang about. “With spectacular views out across the rooftops of the city, the specification is of the highest quality. That’s what makes them exclusive.” A superb demonstration of modern architecture at its best, the use of space shows what can be achieved through imagination and creativity. Access to these three penthouses is through the beautifully appointed central atrium which stretches from the ground floor all the way up to

Students had it easy back in the 1980s’.
the land are only too aware that their sons and daughters cannot attend university without a major financial contribution from themselves.
Kevin Gray, CEO Bath Building Society Thirty five years ago, I was just about to start my undergraduate course at the University of Edinburgh. Having gathered up my precious record collection and packed everything else that I owned in one rucksack, I set off from Fife to live in Scotland’s capital city in pursuit of fun, love and of course, an education. With weekly rents being a very reasonable £15 and being armed with a student maintenance grant, plus a bursary from the Royal Navy (worth £30 per week), I had few concerns about how I was going to afford to live. Fast forward to the present day. Those wild student days have come back to haunt me! I now have a daughter at university in London and another on the brink of also going to the ‘big smoke’ to study. Things are very different now. With a limited ability to borrow enough money to even pay for food and travel costs, the cost of student accommodation is now typically been borne by…yes.. you guessed it…the good old bank of mum and dad! In my case, my daughter’s rent for first year Halls of Residence was a whopping £190 per week for a room that would pass as a shoebox. Parents across
92 inbath
The high costs of student accommodation is particularly acute in London, but the pattern of increasingly high rents in student towns is seen across the land. If you do the sums you will quickly work out how much a typical 3 year course will cost the average parent. I recommend sitting down before you calculate how much gross income before tax you need to earn to be able to afford to support your student children. The annoying thing is that rental payments become dead money. You get nothing back! Thankfully there is another way. Bath Building Society has been a pioneer in developing mortgages to support students whilst they are studying in university towns. We in fact lend mortgages to students to buy property that they live in whilst studying. We call the product Buy-For-Uni. The Society will lend 100% of the property purchase price so no deposit is required. Bearing in mind that students have no income from employment, doesn’t this all sound a bit crackers? Well things are not quite as mad as they first appear. The student with the mortgage rents out spare accommodation in their home to other students and this provides an income stream that helps to support the mortgage repayments. The Society also takes a 25% collateral charge against the lead student’s parental home. After students have completed their studies, they are free to continue living in the property, to rent it out, or to sell it to hopefully crystallise a profit that might go some way
towards repaying their student loans. The Society has been supporting students with this product for over ten years. It has proved to be popular with parents as they can see their children acquiring equity in their property for the financial support that they give them. This is a distinct advantage over renting. For those of us that were undergraduates of yesteryear, free tuition, cheap rents and the availability of grants made for a relatively affordable study time. These advantages are sadly not features of today’s university experience. Although we didn’t know it then, we students had it easy back in the 1980s! The sky rocketing cost of accommodation constitutes a real barrier to higher education for many. We parents have done well out of rising property prices but this has come at the expense of our children, who out of necessity, need access to the equity in our homes to support them today. As my eldest daughter gears up for starting her second year of studies, I will certainly be taking a keen interest in Buy-For-Uni myself. Maybe you might like to consider doing the same?
