Can you tell us a little about what we can expect from the shows themselves. It’s a show of two halves. My Dining Hell is essentially stand up comedy about awful restaurants. The negative reviews are the smallest part of what I do – amounting to fewer than a fifth of my output in any one year – but they are the ones people remember. So it’s a journey through the landscape of awfulness using a whole bunch of audio visual tools as a kind of second performer on stage. And just to balance things up I read from a few terrible reviews of my own work. There’s time for a quick Q&A session before the interval. Then afterwards it’s an hour of cracking jazz, with songs both about food and drink and which play on my life growing up with a mother, Claire Rayner, who was an agony aunt, because a lot of good jazz songs sound like letters to agony aunts. In between the songs I tell some cracking stories, a few of them filthy, about my life with Claire because I never really spoken about that before. Many of our readers will know you as The Observer restaurant critic and one of the judges on MasterChef, but will not be aware of your musical talents. When did your love of music and especially Jazz begin?
14 inbath
I’ve been playing the piano for nearly 40 years, just not very well. I think I started falling in love with jazz as a kid. As a family we would watch the great Hollywood musicals which were screened on BBC2 on Saturday afternoons, and many of the great jazz tunes started their life in those musicals.
"
want it to stay that way. We both live in fear of coming off stage and shrugging at each other as if it were just another day at the office. I never want it to feel like that so by professional standard we don’t gig that much. This year we’ll probably perform no more than a couple of dozen times.
During the Dining Hell half of the show I will ask the audience to tweet their reviews of me and then I read those out at the beginning of the second half. It’s an interesting exercise because they suddenly realise that what they say will be presented to the whole audience – as my reviews are on a bigger scale – and they have to think about it So when did you start playing the piano? I think I had my first lesson when I was 10 and my last classical one when I was 12. It would take a good few years until I was in my twenties before I started getting some tuition in jazz and blues.
"
You've mainly played shows in and around London, why take your show across the UK now?
Your band is full of really talented musicians, including your wife who has the most amazing voice. Is there a danger that your 'hobby' could soon become a 'big thing'?
Actually my Dining Hell has been all over the country from Lyme Regis in the South to Dundee in the North. With the jazz it’s just logistics. And of course there’s the fact that the pianist and the singer are also the parents to two boys. We can’t just go swanning off all the time, telling them their dinner is in the fridge. So we have to keep the longer trips to a minimum.
Absolutely not, because we’re determined it won’t. It’s a very special part of our life, and we
To be honest it’s why our show is at 3pm on the Saturday. We’ll be home in time for our boys.

I’ve been writing books for 25 years and I welcome all and any critical comment. How much attention I pay to it is then up to me.
What is it like touring as a group and when you go out for a post show meal, what are the reactions of the restaurants you visit like? With the group there’s very little time for that. For an evening show we’ll be sound checking at 5.30pm and we won’t be done with the show until 10pm at which time we’re heading home. Recently though, I realised that the backstage catering – usually sandwiches and crisps – wasn’t what you would expect of the Jay Rayner Quartet. So I’m making more of an effort to get good stuff sent in from local restaurants wherever we happen to be. As a renowned critic, how do you react to critique of your own reviews/shows? Not only is it fine, I invite it. During the Dining Hell half of the show I will ask the audience to tweet their reviews of me and then I read those out at the beginning of the second half. It’s an interesting exercise because they suddenly realise that what they say will be presented to the whole audience – as my reviews are on a bigger scale – and they have to think about it. If they’re just bitchy it doesn’t go down well. As to general reviews of my work, I have absolutely no problem with it. I’ve been writing books for 25 years and I welcome all and any critical comment. How much attention I pay to it is then up to me. There is a general perception that restaurant critics only focus on the negative and give less than glowing reviews. However, your critiques seem to be more positive than not. Do you think this is a reflection of the standard of eateries around? I think it’s down to the fact that I don’t want to sit through a bad meal. I really don’t go searching for the bad ones. They’re like colds and car crashes. They’re something that happen to me. Generally over half my reviews – 25 out of 50 – will be completely positive. Another 15 or so will be middling. Leaving just nine or 10 that are negative. But are there more and better places in Britain? Yes, absolutely. But there’s always space for improvement.

The 'My Dining Hell' element of the show serves up some fantastic anecdotes from your many reviews. What are the biggest 'No No's' when Jay Rayner comes into your restaurant?
It’s not about me. It’s about anybody. The big ones are making sure I’m offered a drink and have a menu in my hand immediately, and not performing service like it’s something you learnt from a book. Oh and for god sake please serve the food on plates, not on shovels, or slates or in mini chip pan fryers. Do you think there are too many Head Chefs try too hard to deliver a plate of food for the 'art' of cooking, rather than to deliver taste and value for the customer? No, I really don’t. It’s very rare that I come across a chef who seems to be cooking for stars and hero worship rather than customers. It does happen, but for the most part they realise they’re running a business and if they don’t take care of the punters they’re screwed. If you were to host a dinner party, which 5 people (dead or alive) would you invite? Peter Ustinov for the wit and anecdotes, Dorothy Parker for the one liners, Dita Von Teese for the glamour, Fats Waller for the music and appetite, and Ella Fitzgerald to join Fats when he hits the piano. Can we finally ask some quick-fire questions: Pub or Restaurant? Restaurant Which Master Chef winner impressed you the most? Tim Anderson, now a panellist on the Kitchen Cabinet, the show I chair for BBC Radio 4. He has doggedly followed one path - Japanese soul food – and does it exceptionally well. His restaurant Nanban, in Brixton, is terrific. It also happens to be close to my house.
Hidden 'food' gem? I have no such thing. If I find somewhere brilliant I always tell everyone all about it in my column Recent discovery (ingredient/dish)? I’m constantly mucking about but I’m rather taken with smoked paprika right now. I’ve used it to come up with a seasoning mix that makes almost anything taste like smokey bacon crisps. What could be better? Food heaven? A plate of charcoal grilled spare ribs from a Portuguese piri prir house on Brixton Hill near where I live called The Luanda Grill. Food hell? Heinz Baked Beans. Hate them. Always have. Favourite tipple? If it’s one spirit it has to be vodka. My favourite cocktail has to be the very butch-sounding Twinkle: champagne, vodka, elderflower cordial, a spritz of lemon oil. As Dorothy Parker said of the Martini, they’re like breasts. One is not enough, three is too many. Pen or Piano? Always the pen. I am a writer first, second, third and ninth. What do you do for downtime? Apart from going to the piano which is both my friend and adversary, I’m in the gym four to five times a week. It’s necessary to stop myself becoming the size of a house, but it’s also very relaxing. What music do you listen to? An awful lot of jazz: Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz and so on. I can’t write while listening to anything with a lyric so this does the job for me. Finally, how many floral shirts do you have? It’s about ten I think, though I wear them less than I used to. We all go in phases. Maybe I’m finally growing up. Many thanks for taking the time out to speak to us and best of luck with the show. Independently owned French restaurant group, Bistrot Pierre, will open its 13th bistrot in Bath this June. The bistrot will be the group’s first in Somerset and will be located on George Street on the site of the old Jika Jika Coffee House and canteen. It will offer a 2 course lunch menu for £10.95 (3 courses £12.95) as well as A La Carte and specific gluten free menus.
Joe Wicks ‘The Bistrot Pierre approach to dining Lean in 15: The Shape Plan is relaxed and welcoming,’ says Head
The origins of Father's Day There is a school of thought that believes Father's Day is a relatively recent concept, conceived to compliment the already popular Mother's Day and celebrate the paternal side of parenting. It may, therefore, surprise you to know that scholars believe the earliest Father's Day message came from a young boy called Elmesu, who lived 4000 years ago in Babylon (modern day Iraq), and carved a message on a card , out of clay, wishing his Babylonian father good health and a long life. Father's Day remained an annual appreciation in several countries all over the world but only became popular in Western culture during the early twentieth century. Although there are numerous potential 'founders' of Father's Day in Western society, one persons efforts stand out above all others. Born in Arkansas, but raised just outside of Spokane, Washinton, Sonna Smart Dood had seen the success obtained by Anna Jarvis, promoting Mother's Day in the US, and took it on herself to make sure fathers were honoured throughout the nation.
The first Father's Day celebration was in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910 and although it didn't have much success initially it was on her return from College in the early 1930's that Dodd started to raise awareness of the day on a national level. Having gained the necessary support from trade groups that may benefit from the celebration (tie manufacturers, tobacconists etc..) and from 1938, the Father's Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men's Wear Retailers to consolidate and systematize the commercial promotion, Father's Day celebrations became more widespread. Despite her best efforts, Fathers Day still hadn't been embraced by the American public. Many took a cynical view that, like Mother's Day, it was a synthetic celebration solely for the purposes of commercial industries to make more money.

Are you ready to start your transformation and get Lean in 15?
All dishes in the restaurant are freshly made by its chefs each day, in the style of continental bistrots. The menu changes regularly with the opening menu set to include mouth-watering dishes from Porc au Calvados (slow-cooked pork), to Poulet printanier (panfriend chicken breast), Epaule d’agneau (slowroasted shoulder of lamb) to Sole meuniére.
Despite presidential backing, it wasn't until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honouring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day.
Although there are numerous potential 'founders' of Father's Day in Western society, one persons efforts stand out above all others. Dodd's own father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran and a single parent who reared his six children after his wife died in child birth. After hearing a sermon about Jarvis' Mother's Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday honouring them. Although she initially suggested June 5, her father's birthday, the pastors hadn't enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June.

Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972. It was soon after that Father's Day was adopted by the UK, although not a national holiday, many of us take the opportunity to treat our 'Dad's' in the form of gifts, meals or just a relaxing day.

It's all about the base
A fresh and authentic Italian restaurant has recently opened its doors within the historic Corridor. With a traditional menu alongside artisan pizza that lets you choose your dough, we spoke to owner Massimo Nucaro to find out what we can expect. know at that time that they have been working together for 12 years. So I invited Emiliano to come and work at Glastonbury festival. As he stepped into the kitchen we were all blown away by his acrobatic skills. I mean we had never seen anything like that - even in Italy. I told him after 5 minutes that this was his last job. We have been working together since.
Owner, Massimo Nucaro What brings you to Bath/ The Corridor? Before securing The Corridor, we have looked at a number of properties in Bath. We felt that the property at The Corridor was the right one as soon as we stepped in. It had such a light and elegant feeling and it was right in the centre of the city Tell us about your background in the industry? We have been trading for almost 20 years at major music festivals around the UK. However, in the last few years, we have been brewing the idea to open a restaurant that could offer people something special and unique and at the same time offer authentic top quality Italian food. That’s how Dough was conceived - it is a mixture of tradition, innovation, experience and passion with the sole intent to make the best Italian food. How did you and Emiliano, your business partner, meet? Emiliano and I met 4 years ago through the President of the Italian pizza chef association, Mr Luigi Stamerra. Emiliano had moved into London and Luigi had send me a message saying that one of his friends was in the UK and he was pretty good at making pizza. Little did I
Acrobatic skills …? Yes, Emiliano is an incredible pizza acrobat and he has won many competitions, but that is only the obvious part. He is the most expert person in the UK in making pizza without a shred of a doubt.
Tell us something we didn’t know about Pizzas? Pizza making is such an artisan job, it takes years to master it. Although the ingredients are simple (flour, water and yeast) their interaction is highly complex. A few years ago, I was in Japan and I learned that to become a sushi chef it takes around 20 years. Pizza is the same, although simple, it does take years to master. I think we have mastered our job and Dough restaurant is the result of all our knowledge and hard work. However, we always find ways to improve and make things better, this is a constant for us. We will always strive for improvement.
The Dough concept is going to revolutionise the pizza restaurant business. I mean, people can choose different toppings together with the dough that suits them best. Explain the concept behind customers being able to choose the Pizza base? Thanks to Emiliano’s knowledge, we have the capacity to make dough using alternative flours ranging from hemp to kamut, turmeric, multiicereal, gluten free and many more. Of course all these doughs not only taste great but they have added healthy value. The Dough concept is going to revolutionise the pizza restaurant business. I mean, people can choose different toppings together with the dough that suits them best. This is the only pizza restaurant of this kind in the whole of the UK and we are proud that we can offer this exclusivity to Bathonians!
And finally, we have to ask, what is your favourite pizza toping/base combination? I like strong flavours, so my favourite is turmeric base on calabrese which has spicy salami topping.
Now open in The Corridor Mon - Thur 11:30 - 15:00 and 18:00 to 22:30 Fri - Sat 11:30 to 23:00 and Sun 11:30 to 22:00

Heat the oil in deep-sided frying pan over a medium heat. 2. Add the onion and garlic, cooking for ten minutes over a medium heat until soft. 3. Add the ginger, turmeric and curry powder. Cook for one minute until the spices become darker and fragrant. 4. Stir in the tomatoes and then add the cauliflower, potato and lemon zest. 5. Cover the pan and leave to cook for 30 minutes, adding a little water as necessary, although this curry should be fairly dry. 6. Take the curry off the heat and season to taste with a little salt and pepper. (Be aware that many curry powders already contain salt.) 7. Stir through the spinach until it wilts, then add the coriander. 8. Divide the curry evenly on two plates and serve with wholemeal chapatti. It’s national vegetarian week again, a week where the great and the good urge everyone to forgo meat in the interests of ecology, ethics or health, depending on which hat they are wearing. For me it is as good a chance as any to think what it means to be a vegetarian in 2016.
health reasons but that is what it is. Vegan and vegetarian charities bombard us with campaigns about the evils of meat and people duly feel bad for doing so. In many ways it’s been very successful and has moved us a long way from my childhood.
Back when I was a child in the 1980’s my parents faced an uphill struggle to feed me a vegetarian diet – health visitors accused them of child neglect, restaurants looked at you like you were an alien when you had to patiently explain that ham wasn’t vegetarian, and society in general viewed you as, at best, a touch eccentric, and at worst, dangerous.
However, and here is my problem, nobody sells perfume by telling you that you smell. Vegetarian food has come a long way from substitute meats and cheese in everything. It is fresh, it is exciting and it is made with plants at the centre of the plate.
I dream of a world where people choose to eat in a plant restaurant in the same way they choose a fish restaurant or a steak house, not because they think that they shouldn’t eat meat but because they want to eat vegetables that night. Fast forward to 2016 and every restaurant worth their salt has a decent range of vegetarian options – fine dining restaurants offer vegetarian taster menus as standard and when you tell someone that you don’t eat meat they make a variety of excuses as to why they still do, rather than look at you like you just told them you’re from Mars. In many ways we live in a different world – vegetarian is now an accepted part of the main stream.
At the restaurant we work tirelessly to find ways in which vegetables are the stars of the show, we don’t sit there scratching our heads wondering how to cook a meal without meat, we wonder how best to show off the amazing plants our farmers have grown. We are not vegetarian because we don’t eat meat, we are vegetarian because we want to eat plants, oh and did I mention that it’s great for the planet and your health.
Scratch beneath the surface though and I believe there is still a lot of work to do. Set aside for one minute the fact that most pub chefs still don’t realise that parmesan isn’t vegetarian and let’s look at the bigger picture. Vegetarian is still a concept that is based on doing without. It is defined as a meal without meat. Vegetarians don’t eat animals – it may be to save the planet, it may be for ethical reasons or it may be for
I dream of a world where people choose to eat in a plant restaurant in the same way they choose a fish restaurant or a steak house, not because they think that they shouldn’t eat meat but because they want to eat vegetables that night. It is a source of immeasurable pride to me that so many of our customers aren’t vegetarian, they choose to eat with us because of the quality of the food.

Vegetarian Wines To some of you the words Vegetarian and Wine may not be a coupling you expected. Since late in 2014 all outlets selling wine must indicate that some of their wines might (amongst other things) contain fish products. The reason is simple – some of you who practice Vegetarianism or simply cannot or do not wish to consume such additives will have the choice. Moreover it is also designed to assist in informing the drinker who suffers from certain allergies should have access to the up to date info at hand. It’s legislated that this information is indicated on a Wine List or similar document accessible in the outlet selling wine, generally for consumption on the premises.
reaction to this so care is needed. Not on the allergen list but definitely not vegetarian are derivatives made from Gelatine or Isinglass both used as clarification agents in the winemaking process. These should be omitted when the words Suitable for Vegetarians are listed on the wine’s label. Still with me? Hope so! Some of you know that I am a fan of wines from the Co-operative. With many branches you should have no problem obtaining these terrific Speciality Co-operative selected wines – all suitable for vegetarians and noted on the back wine label.

It takes no prisoners in the panacea of Roses that can generally be very wimpy! Great with Barbeques. With National Vegetarian Week May May 16th 18th to to 22nd 24th it seemed appropriate flagging this up. The now legislated 14 allergies that must be listed include Eggs, Milk, Molluscs and Sulphur Dioxide. The first two are definitely not vegetarian and often find themselves as a component of wine making. The use of Mollusc (shells) is rare. So why use Eggs and Milk? First the humble Egg; it is separated (yolk and white) the white being gently whipped to add air into the albumen. It is then funnelled into the wine-filled cask to act as a fining agent. This pulls down the impurities by gravity in (mainly red) wine leaving it clear. This practice is still carried out in Bordeaux and Rioja for exclusive hand-made wines of distinction. Again for most of you milk is a strange one to be added to wine. It is used in the form of Casein a derivative of milk again used for clarifying wine. Albeit Sulphur Dioxide is not an animal product it is on the list of allergens legislated to be identified. It is a natural by-product of wine making in the fermentation process but it is also commonly used in winemaking as a gentle disinfectant generally keeping the grapes or wine fresh. This may upset some of you with a

Captivating Catalonia Food and Wine Tour of Catalonia: part one
But it was the next few days that were to open my eyes to what Catalonia really had to offer. For those of you with an interest in food, wine, historic monuments plus a myriad of stunning and varied vistas this might just be the new place in your gastronomic itinerary?
region) of Emporda perhaps little known in the UK but full of promise and quirky quality. Our first of many treats was to experience the architectural genius of Celler Brugarol at the Mas Bell-lloc (beautiful place) cut into the red soiled landscape with huge staves of linked rusting steel inviting you down its mysterious pathway into a modern winery situated mainly underground. It was a cross between middle earth mystery and a giant Richard Serra sculpture (Guggenheim, Bilbao) extolling form and texture amongst indigenous flowers, shrubs and trees. I couldn’t help thinking how it might melt into the landscape in future years. As we marvelled at this innovative winery the wine was being opened and offered to our tasters. The grapes were grown in selected soils and climes as the undulation of the estate enabled an eclectic mix to be planted. Malvasia, Xarel-o and Muscatel grapes were for the whites plus Cabernets, Monastrell, Grenache and Carinena for the reds. The wines offered for tasting were made with minimal handling allowing the plots of soil to express the terrior of the estate. Needles to say the wines had real character, depth of flavour and quality abound! Do search out this estate for an ethereal glimpse of a winery very close to nature.
Our journey started with a walking tour of Barcelona taking in sites that stun and the corners of the city that surprise and delight as the daring and colourful modern architecture nestles alongside classical baroque styles with a sprinkling of Roman thrown in for good measure. It’s all here within close proximity of the blue Mediterranean Sea.
On to our hotel (Hotel Terraza) about 70k east to the town of Roses was a beach Spa hotel situated on a curve of a huge bay allowing us to trace our coastal journey with the twinkle of village lights along the way. Regional dishes were wheeled out including Mussels, lovely salads and delicate desserts. Our long day was fading and we retired.
The atmosphere was everywhere as we joined in the wonderful bustle of this major city; streets small and mysterious to fast-paced boulevards and the ubiquitous trams zig zaging to the outskirts of the city. Museums and restaurants were our quarry as we were expertly guided to places that were a feast for the eyes. Suddenly it was 2pm and lunch called! We were directed to the Hotel Cotton House that had just undergone a complete restoration turning it into a major gastronomic venue of sumptuous proportion. It was certainly reminiscent of great and grand dining but with a casualness that indicated sheer professionalism.
Up early with our colleagues and eager to get on the road to sample wines at La Vinyeta winery app. 22k to the North East of the coast. This is the base of the Pyrenees showing different soils and climate pointing to different styles of wine. On arrival we were invited to venture into the vineyards to see how the poor soils were tamed by the vines, olive groves and fruit trees enabling seasonal bounty to be harvested. La Vinyeta was a comparatively new winery producing wines of exceptional quality ranging from rich whites to full-on reds with the addition of brilliant dessert wines all offered with individually crafted bottles, colour and stylistic presentations throughout. Impressive and confident, we were all impressed with this modern winery in the hills.
After lunch it was onward to the eastern coastal region known as Costa Brava our journey showing us just what to expect as we hugged the coast for 100k to taste wines at Palamos. This is a region in the DO (authoritative wine

Families were dominant within the carnival atmosphere of the grand show. Mixing and milling about with a sort of free Mediterranean spirit, the seniors of the families were tasting and buying from whoever they fancied. It would be hard to imagine a nicer event for me to kick off with as I tasted Cava, Costers del Segre (red, white and rose), Tarragona and the fabled Priorat with true abandon.

The autumn afternoon sun shone as I arrived in Barcelona and headed for my downtown hotel. Easily finding my bearings I headed for the first event of many planned for a Wine and Food orientated experience in this Spanish Mediterranean outpost known as Catalonia. I navigated the trams with ease and headed downtown to the annual Wine Fair showing over 200 wines in the middle of the square to the head of the magnificent Arc del Triomf in the late afternoon.
This lovely country inn has open fires and a great atmosphere! There is a great menu and a specials board. The food was excellent and well presented by super staff!

Party In the City
A season of outstanding
festivals
Ever since the Romans recognised the unique potential of Bath's natural hot thermal springs, the golden city of Bath has been welcoming visitors to enjoy its obvious charms. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the beautiful Georgian city of Bath presents some of the finest architectural sights in Europe including the Royal Crescent, the Circus and Pulteney Bridge. All within easy walking distance, Bath's rich diversity of museums, galleries and attractions offer art, culture and history lovers everything from astronomy, architecture and industrial heritage to American history, Jane Austen, far eastern and Roman remains. The fifteenth century Bath Abbey and the world-famous Roman Baths can be found in the heart of the city, whilst shopaholics and foodies may feast on the delights of 'real' shops, traditional pubs and fine restaurants.
Within our 'Festivals' section, we take a look at some of the many festivals, exhibitions and events that will keep us entertained throughout the season. We also introduce some ideas of where to go and what to do whilst out and about with the family, taking in the diversity and richness of attractions Bath has to offer.
Party in the City… Bath’s biggest free night out The festival season kicks off in earnest with PARTY IN THE CITY, a special opening night event on Friday 20th May with thousands of performers, 90% of whom are local, will take centre stage across the city’s venues, museums, churches and parks, bringing all genres of music to tens of thousands of people and placing the festival at the very heart of the city.
Last year’s Party in the City attracted a staggering 20,000 visitors, so this year’s event is hoped to draw even more crowds both young and old. Buzzing with life, Bath offers a vibrant, yearround calendar of theatrical, musical, artistic and sporting events, but in May and throughout the following three months the city comes alive with its 'Festival Season'.

In fact, last year’s Party in the City attracted a staggering 20,000 visitors, so this year’s event is hoped to draw even more crowds both young and old. This annual event is free.
Due to popular demand, this year’s Party in the City will now have two central hubs; Parade Gardens and Queen’s Square. This year’s headliners for Parade Gardens are The Bohos (performance starts at 9pm) and headliners for Queen’s Garden are The Blues Others (performance starts at 9pm). Refreshments will be available for all the family throughout the evening. On the opening night, the World Looping Champion, Shlomo, will be performing a unique beatbox choir juxtaposed against the backdrop of Bath Abbey. For one night only, Shlomo has teamed up with 180 school children from various local schools including Selwood Academy in Frome, Peasedown St John Primary School and Westfield Primary School in Radstock to create a special beatbox mix that will warm the cockles of any heart. The performance kick starts at 6pm and certainly promises to be a unique experience. Party in the City is supported by Bath & North East Somerset Council, and sponsored by various local companies. Over the following 10 pages, our extensive guide to the festival season will take in a number of the areas best festivals such as: Bath International Music Festival (20 - 29 May), Bath Fringe Festival (27 May - 12 June), Bath Fringe Arts (27 May - 12 June), Bath & West (1 - 4 June), Iford Arts (4 June - 7 Aug) and Frome Festival (3 - 12 July) to name a few. Regardless of whether you are a visitor to the area or a local resident, the Bath region gives festival goers an outstanding diversity of arts, culture and history that makes the Festival season a special time to visit a very special city. For those visiting the city, we have also highlighted some of Bath and surrounding areas best museums, galleries and local attractions, so that you make the most of your visit and keep coming back year after year.

Bath Fringe Festival 27 May - 12 June www.bathfringe.co.uk
Pubs to parks, streets & shops & studios, from the Rondo to the Royal Oak to Radstock, the 17 days of the Bath Fringe are the occasion for Bath people to fill the city with arts every year. Maybe we can't paint the town red for the duration, maybe you wouldn't want us to, but we can use 40 different venues in the city and beyond, and many of them not for the use for which they were intended. This year's festival – the 25th under the current organisation – hasinformation gone further down the road For further please visit to decentralisation, with individual venues developing strong programmes of their own SHOW MANAGER – ALAN LYONS rather than one high-profile venue stealing the e. alan.lyons@bathandwest.co.uk limelight. Recent rendezvous like the brand new rebuilt Widcombe Social Club (music and comedy), and 203 a still busier programme at t. 01749 822 Burdall's Yard (Fringe and Student Theatre) have joined ever-over-active Fringe centres like The Bell, Chapel Arts, and the Old Theatre Royal to host events on most nights (Burdall's on every single night) of the Fringe calendar. The FAB Fringe Arts Bath visual arts programme will be moving into yet another different selection of unused or otherwise-occupied spaces, several on the Fringe's traditional home of Walcot Street – including the original Arts Workshop HQ building from the 1970s. Bedlam Fair street arts festival will insinuate itself among the developers and repurposed roadways in the city centre and Kingsmead/SawClose (June 4&5), and Fringe favourites Kilter Theatre and 20:20 Vision will be inhabiting unexpected spaces – in the latter case truly unexpected – to our theatrical delight. The 50th anniversary of the closure of the Somerset & Dorset Railway (better known to some nowadays as the Two Tunnels route) is the rationale for putting on an acrobatic and exciting community performance in Green Park Station (parkour & street dance meet The Natural Theatre, no less, ‘Steam’ – pictured – May 28 and June 1) and the old line is the thread along which Fringe performances will reach as far as Radstock or even further, both during Fringe Fortnight and later in the summer. The Fringe isn't about big-ticket marquee names, but does bring artists from all round the country and stray figures from way beyond (Japanese musical surrealist Ichi, Kobo Town from Trinidad, Joel Savoy from Louisiana) who have been drawn into a westcountry orbit to join some of Bath's better-known performers (Amadou

Verdi’s fascinating take on Shakespeare’s story of power focuses minutely and up close up on Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, a couple both deeply flawed and deeply human. And he charts with characteristic empathy the timeless conflict between ambition and conscience, which lies at the story’s heart, creating one of the finest scores of his early period. Following Macbeth is Mozart’s The Magic Flute which is as baffling as it is popular, sublime as well as entertaining, The Magic Flute remains one of the most instantly enjoyable operas in the repertory. Through trials of the body and spirit Tamino seeks Pamina, and Pappageno the birdman seeks his Pappagena. The goodies turn out to be baddies and vice versa. Mozart’s music creates a truly magical consistency which, by its end is often felt to be his most transcendent and moving work.
The final opera of the season sees a return to the cloister by celebrated baroque director Christian Curnyn. Directed by Tim Nelson Iford Arts have created a new performing version of A Fairy Queen, based on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Nights Dream with the music of Henry Purcell. Eighty years later, the roadshow will be based in the abbey courtyard, where many of Fox Talbot’s early photographs were taken. Visitor Experience Officer, Rachael Holtom, said, ‘As the British birthplace of photography, we love seeing our visitors using cameras to create memories of their day here. We are

A Room of their Own: lost Bloombury Interiors The new major summer exhibition at the Bath and North East Somerset Council run Victoria Art Gallery will be ‘A Room of their Own: lost Bloombury Interiors’ running from 11 June – 4 September. It will be a mixed show of paintings, drawings, ceramics and sculptures plus an assortment of artistic treasures from 1910-20’s UK. The show will be re-creating some famous Bloomsbury rooms with works by Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and Roger Fry – three of the most well-known artist of this era. Recognising that the only Bloomsbury Group decorative schemes to survive are at Charleston in East Sussex, this exhibition aims to recreate, as far as possible, several of the lost interiors on which Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant worked in the first half of the 20th century. This exhibition reunites objects and paintings from private and public collections that have not been seen together for over 50 years. Fry, Bell and Grant were famed for their non-hierarchical approach to art and craft,
regarding the various disciplines as being of equal status to painting. Their readiness to see in interior decoration and the decorative arts the possibility for a valid and original artistic endeavour began with the Omega Workshops (founded 1913) and continued until the Second World War.

The Fashion Museum Bath presents 100‘star’ objects from its collection in the headline exhibition ‘A History of Fashion in 100 Objects’. Taken together, these objects showcase a history of fashion from the 1500s to the present day. The exhibition includes ten shoe ‘moments’ throughout history, from Georgian silk shoes to trainers. There is also a children’s trail showcasing ten ‘historical fashion’ looks for kids, from the 1700s to the 2000s.
In the Omega’s final years (it closed in 1919), Bell and Grant began to work more on their own behalf. As highly practical artists, they acquired the knowledge and skills at the Omega that later proved invaluable to their continued love of decorating. Between the wars a torrent of decoration rushed through the squares of Bloomsbury, with friends queuing to have their homes embellished. Little of the interiors now remain as much was destroyed, by accident or by bombing during the Second World War. During the exhibition there will be talks and lunchtime exhibition tours held on Thursdays from 12.30-1.00pm, free to Discovery Card and ticket holders. Bath’s rental market: let’s take a closer look
Landlords are facing some of the biggest changes in decades, as the government hits them hard with harsher taxes and tighter lending rules. So how will Bath’s rental market be affected?
There has been an unprecedented assault on the finances of buy to let landlords in recent months. Already in force is a dramatic 3% increase in stamp duty, which means a buy to let landlord purchasing a £500,000 property will now pay £11,250 more than before April 2016. That’s a hefty dent in the value of their investment.
The Right to Rent Do you have it? “Right to Rent” was introduced in the Immigration Act 2014 and since 1st February 2016 the bill has been implemented across England. This new law means that agents and private landlords (including those who sub-let or take in lodgers) must check that prospective tenants have the right to be in the country. Under the new rules, if landlords fail to do the necessary checks; they could face penalties. However, since February, there has been mixed feedback from agents and landlords regarding the Right to Rent checks. Some might feel that the Home Office is trying to shy away from work and use agents/ landlords to “do their job”. However we would disagree with that statement and agree with Immigration Minister James Brokenshire when he said: “Right to Rent checks are quick and simple, and many responsible landlords already do them as a matter of routine.” Any agent worth their salt should already be checking a tenant’s proof of identity, address and credit history to ensure that they are providing the best possible service to their landlord and the prospective tenant. The Immigration Act 2014 was not introduced to make our lives harder; it’s a small part of a bigger picture. Different industries across the UK are carrying out their “Right to…” checks. Your right to be in this country is checked at the border, university, work or even when you want to buy a car. So why not do it in Lettings as well? For the people who have a legitimate right to be in the country, these checks will be easy and straight forward. The checks are put in to place to make it harder for people to live and work in the UK illegally. If every industry does their part it would have a positive effect on population,

Any agent worth their salt should already be checking a tenant’s proof of identity, address and credit history to ensure that they are providing the best possible service to their landlord and the prospective tenant. housing and poverty. The United Kingdom is an island and we have limited space, if population and housing were better controlled it would in turn have an effect on our environment – our urban jungle wouldn’t expand and there wouldn’t be a need to reduce our agricultural and forestry areas. Another bonus of the Immigration bill is that it will also target and reduce “cowboy agents” who do not abide by the checks or have not signed up to a regulated body such as The Association of Residential Lettings (ARLA) . Prospective tenants should not fear that landlords and agents will use this bill to discriminate. British and foreign tenants will be going through the same checks. The Equality and Human Rights Commission worked alongside the government to ensure that no human rights are breached and that agents and landlords should carry out the necessary checks regardless of a person’s race, sex, nationality or religion and that the decision to rent to them should solely be based on the documents provided.
www.bathpropertyletting.co.uk
Landlords used to be able to offset the interest they paid on properties against their tax bill, but that’s being phased out from next year. What’s more, the Bank of England has proposed tougher lending rules which could mean that one in five current buy to let mortgages is no longer approved. It’s all because the government wants to make it easier for residential buyers to compete; but whether these measures will work is another matter. So what does all this mean for Bath’s lettings market? Let’s remember that the context is a buoyant local economy. The Bath and Bristol area has seen strong economic growth of late; businesses based in London and the South-East continue to either relocate or open offices in the area. Bath is a highly desirable place to live, and there’s certainly a buzz around the city. As a result we don’t expect Bath’s lettings market to go quiet. Instead, we do expect upward pressure on the cost of renting – especially given the continuing high demand for accommodation in and around the city. As a counter-balance however, rents have already increased substantially over recent years, so it’s hard to envisage them rising yet further at a similar pace. It’s even possible we could see fewer rental properties available going forward. But let’s face it; investors do not have a limitless supply of attractive investment options, with interest rates still at record lows. Ever since the Second World War near enough, bricks and mortar has been an excellent long term investment, so it’s unlikely that there will be a mass exit by investors. Here at HomeLets we continue to be as busy as ever serving our core rental markets of professionals and students. We have also been working hard on an extensive brand refresh exercise, which will see an all-new, user friendly website and a refreshed look and feel for our offices and marketing materials, consolidating our position as Bath’s leading local lettings agent. Whether or not we see a substantial rise in rents or indeed a slip off in stock supply – and it’s possible, but by no means probable – what is certain is that HomeLets will continue to support our clients with our unrivalled local expertise.

Taxing Questions by Bath Building Society CEO Dick Jenkins
"
Clearly modern civilisation requires people to pay their taxes. If we value our health service then we need to pay for it. Our children need educating. Our borders need protecting. And people who are the weakest and most vulnerable in our Society need to be helped.
Dick Jenkins Bath Building Society There are many things in life that mystify me. How gramophone needles and grooves in vinyl produce the amazing sounds of symphony orchestras, for example, or how heavy planes fly through the air without crashing. Or why anybody would watch I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here as an act of free will! But one of the most mystifying things is the morality of taxation, which has been a running sore in the news in the last couple of years. Clearly modern civilisation requires people to pay their taxes. If we value our health service then we need to pay for it. Our children need educating. Our borders need protecting. And people who are the weakest and most vulnerable in our Society need to be helped. These things cost money. And there are few of us these days that would argue against a progressive taxation system in which better off people give a higher proportion of their income in taxes.

These days we all understand that there is a big difference between tax avoidance (which is legal) and tax evasion (which isn’t). And I don’t know anybody who doesn’t think that tax evasion should be rooted out and punished. After all, tax cheats deprive the poor/the sick who need those resources and they just put a bigger burden on law-abiding tax-payers like us. There are few things in British politics more likely to gain votes than to promise a crackdown on “scroungers” or “tax dodgers”. The morality around tax evasion is clear, isn’t it? (I mean, nobody would ever dream of paying their window cleaner or builder in cash would they…..?). Ethically, tax avoidance is a much greyer area. It makes our blood boil, does it not, to hear that well-worn phrase that for the very rich, the payment of income tax is “optional”? We hear of stories where incredibly wealthy people end up paying less tax than their cleaners. We all know that there is a massive industry of wealth tax planners whose job is to exploit loopholes in our over-complex tax system to legally minimise the tax paid by their clients. It’s not just at a personal level; it applies to companies too. The papers have been understandably full of the scandal of large super-national companies like Amazon or Google organising themselves to pay as little tax as possible. Surely that’s immoral? I think so.
"
But for most of us at the other end of the income spectrum, if we’re honest we revel in a little bit of legal tax avoidance when we get the chance. I like to think that I’m savvy using my ISA allowances, and the fact that I can reclaim some money on gift aid when I give money to Charity makes my heart sing. And I delight in saving money when I have bought something Duty Free. But if we’re scandalised by the likes of Starbucks or Amazon playing the loopholes in the system, isn’t my use of tax avoidance in these ways the height of hypocrisy? I suppose there might be a distinction between what the Government accepts with a blind eye and the kinds of tax avoidance measures that it seems to actively encourage, but that’s a pretty fine line. It seems to me that we are entering a slightly new era in which there are legal tax avoidance activities which are socially acceptable and there are those that aren’t. I think it’s down to those who govern us to get the law to properly align with where we think that boundary lies.
