Be part of something special in 2019 – Join the HUB XV co-working community

at Bath Racecourse

HUB XV launched in September 2018 with the overriding purpose of building co-working communities, located in spectacular sporting venues with sporting values at the core. Our first ever breakfast event was held at the HUB at Bath Racecourse in October when guest speaker Helena Hills of True Start Coffee spoke about the story of her business which she and husband Simon founded in 2015 in neighbouring Bristol. Helena spoke about the trials and tribulations of being a business start up before opening the floor to questions from guests and members. It was at this first event that we quickly realised just how valuable the community that we are building is. We saw first-hand the power that collaboration has on businesses and how the opportunity to vocalise successes and challenges can help to re-assure and most importantly inspire growth and develop moving forward. The first evening event saw a sporting panel come together to discuss the importance of team values and the way in which these values have supported their transitional journeys into business. The panel made up of ex-Irish & Bath Rugby international player Kevin Maggs, current Bath and Wales international, Rhys Priestland, local Rugby legend, John Hall and our very own CEO and exWelsh rugby international player, Alix Popham. The event was hosted by Matt Powell who guided the players through topics regarding business and sport and later there was an opportunity for members to ask their questions about the panel’s past careers and views on current sporting topics. We’ve hosted two other successful member events since these, both of which have shown the exciting growth and development of the HUB XV community, something we are extremely proud of, we’re excited for what’s to come in 2019…..

January 2019

We’re looking forward to kicking off 2019 with our first HUB Breakfast Club of the new year on Tuesday 8th January – We’ll be talking about understanding colleagues and your team members with speakers Joanna Crosse & Nicki Websper (who are both HUB XV members). Joanna and Nicki will be imparting their wisdom and experience on how to fulfil your potential and create the most successful business possible. Enjoy a complimentary hot breakfast roll, selection of pastries, tea, coffee or hot chocolate, orange juice and fruit selection. On Wednesday 23rd January our evening networking event will be ‘In conversation with Ollie Phillips’. Following an illustrious career in professional rugby, Ollie is now a highly successful businessman in one of the world’s largest professional service networks, PWC. A Guinness World Record holder, motivational speaker and expedition leader to name but a few of his achievements, he is proof that anything is possible. This event will be focussed on motivating yourself and your work force through difficult times. Enjoy complimentary nibbles and a glass of wine/prosecco/beer or soft drink on arrival as well as informal and relaxed networking. To become part of the HUB XV community, Bath or to find out more about our Cardiff HUB, contact Head of Membership Sarah Moon info@hubxv.com or visit www.hubxv.com

Mark Benton

Sir Ian McKellen

SPRING into a new season at BAth's Theatre Royal Amongst the actors visiting Bath in Spring 2019, one of the UK’s great theatrical knights, Ian McKellen, will perform for one performance only as part of his 80th birthday celebrations in IAN McKELLEN ON STAGE, an evening of acting and anecdotes. Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd, Human, Doc Martin) reprises her hugely acclaimed performance in HOME, I’M DARLING, a new play by Laura Wade (Posh) about one woman’s quest to become the perfect 1950s housewife, which comes to Bath direct from the West End and a sold out run at the National Theatre.

Also direct from the West End, Sam Yates directs Mark Benton (Early Doors, Northern Lights, Waterloo Road) and Nigel Harman (EastEnders, Olivier Award for Shrek, the Musical) in GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS. David Mamet’s ground-breaking modern classic is set in the cut throat world of Chicago salesmen where four increasingly desperate employees are doing anything they can to avoid being fired. Opening in Bath, prior to the West End, Simon Callow (Amadeus, Four Weddings and Funeral) and Jane Asher (The Mistress, Holby City, Eve) star in A SONG AT TWILIGHT, Noël Coward’s bittersweet story of secrets and missed opportunities in which he himself made his last West End performance. Caroline Langrishe (Lovejoy, Judge John Deed) and Aden Gillett (The House of Eliott) star in CAROLINE’S KITCHEN, which explores life behind the camera for the nation’s favourite TV cook. Direct from a hit London run, this searing comedy by Torben Betts is produced by the Original Theatre Company. Award-winning comedies include Marie Jones’s STONES IN HIS POCKETS, about the making of a historical blockbuster in rural Ireland, as seen through the eyes of two local extras. Lindsay Posner directs this hysterically funny

and inventive show, which won both Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best New Comedy and is produced by Theatre Royal Bath Productions. THE COMEDY ABOUT A BANK ROBBERY is the breathtakingly funny latest hit from Mischief Theatre, the team behind The Play That Goes Wrong. This smash-and-grab comedy, enjoying its third year in the West End, visits Bath as part of its first tour. Tom Stoppard received a lifetime achievement in literature award last year, now there’s the chance to see one of his funniest plays, ROUGH CROSSING set on an ocean liner and accompanied by songs composed by André Previn. Rachel Kavanaugh directs this new production. For those who love a good mystery, Ian Rankin’s Rebus novels have long-dominated the detective fiction market. Now the legendary Inspector The Lady Vanishes

Samantha Womack appears in REBUS: LONG SHADOWS which has been written exclusively for the stage and adapted by Rona Munro and stars Charles Lawson (Jim McDonald in Coronation Street), Cathy Tyson (Mona Lisa, Band of Gold) and John Stahl (Richard Karstark in Game of Thrones). Paula Hawkins’s international hit novel, THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, has sold over twenty million copies worldwide. This new stage adaptation stars Samantha Womack (Ronnie Mitchell in EastEnders, Mount Pleasant, Game On) and Oliver Farnworth (Hollyoaks, Coronation Street), and is directed by Anthony Banks. The classic thriller THE LADY VANISHES, based on the Alfred Hitchcock film, features an all star cast including Juliet Mills (Wild at Heart, Passions) and Maxwell Caulfield (Dynasty, The Colbys), Lorna Fitzgerald (Abi Branning in EastEnders), Matt Barber (Atticus Aldridge in Downton Abbey), Robert Duncan (Gus Hedges in Drop the Dead Donkey), Philip Lowrie (Dennis Tanner in Coronation Street) and Ben Nealon (Soldier, Soldier). Also inspired by a film, in this case the Oscar winning RAIN MAN, Paul Nicholls (Joe Wicks in EastEnders) and Chris Fountain (Best Actor in the 2008 British Soap Awards for playing Justin Burton in

Win 2 tickets to see Hollyoaks) star in the touching and funny story of salesman Charlie Babbitt and his older brother Raymond, an autistic savant with an amazing memory and a genius for numbers. Marking the 25th anniversary of Louis de Bernières’s best-selling novel about love on the Greek Island of Cephalonia during the Second World War, Rona Munro has adapted CAPTAIN CORELLI’S MANDOLIN in a new production directed by Olivier and Tony Award nominated Melly Still. The acclaimed English Touring Theatre, celebrating its 25th anniversary, has joined with the legendary Theatre Royal Stratford East to present an undoubted 20th century masterpiece, Peter Shaffer’s EQUUS, inspired by a true story of the relationship between a teenage boy who has committed a devastating crime, and his psychiatrist.

Peter Andre Celebrating 25 years

It has been 25 years since Peter Andre first burst onto the music scene. Now, the internationally acclaimed, global media star is back with a 25-date tour of the UK, taking in The Forum, Bath on 22nd February. We managed to grab a quick chat with the Antipodean superstar to talk about the tour, antiques and family life.

Well it’s the Celebrate 25 Years tour where I’m performing at 25 venues around the country. It really is going to be a great show with lots of the old classics as well as some of my more recent stuff with a few surprises thrown in along the way! So this is a real celebration of your work and a big thank you to your fans. How important have they been to you over the past 25 years? 25 years ago I opened for Madonna in Australia for her Stadium tour. I’m so lucky people want to still see me! I’m looking forward to seeing everybody hopefully having a good time! You’ve always managed to keep re-inventing yourself, whether it’s through the diversity in your music or through TV programmes. Has it been a conscious effort to try your hand at most things to keep it fresh? I’ve been extremely lucky that I’ve had so many opportunities in my career from singing to TV presenting and even acting, it hasn’t been a conscious effort to keep it fresh, it’s just been amazing that I’ve had so many other doors opening and I’ve been lucky enough to give new things a try. With your pop career, swing albums, love songs and even Christmas releases, how difficult has it been to select the songs for the show? It’s been hard I’m not going to lie, but I think everybody will be pleased with the choices that I’ve made. Of the styles of music you have recorded, which is your favourite? All music I love actually but that’s hard to choose. But if I had to pick a couple it would have to be soul and funk. Is there a TV programme you would like to try - and why? I would love to try my hand either on The Voice, because I love discovering and supporting new talent, or maybe hosting a family quiz show, that would be so cool to do.

Ha ha very good… I really enjoyed filming Antiques Roadshow – it really opened my eyes to a new world. I don’t know if I’d make a very good dealer mind you. How is touring and do the family come along to cheer you on? This tour is pretty full on around the UK so it is hard to be away from the family but that’s also the good thing about Facetime, you can still see everybody and speak to them. But yes I love it when family and friends can come along and see me in action. It will be Millie and Theo’s first time seeing me in concert. If you could go back to the 20 year old Peter Andre and give him any advice, what would it be? Enjoy the moment... I spent so much time not even appreciating where I was or what I was lucky enough to be doing that it just zoomed by. So what’s the plan for the next 25 years? Well who knows where any of us will be in 25 years’ time! I’m 45 (nearly 46) now and I’m obviously not going to be performing forever but I am excited to be trying interior design out and through that I have a new bed range out called A by Andre and I’ll be adding to that over the next few years. Hopefully I’ll also be building a new house out in Cyprus as well. For more information about tickets to Peter’s Celebrating 25 Years tour go to www.ticketmaster.co.uk

The Explorer’s Guide to Lacock

Pick up an Explorer’s Guide to Lacock from Visitor Reception and see what you can find. This guide will last you all year, with different animals and plants to spot for each season, perfect for visiting us again and again.

Volunteer recruitment day

Saturday 19 January 10am-12 noon Love history? Why not pass it on? Whether you have a whole day or just a few hours to give us, working as a volunteer offers you the opportunity to get involved and make use of your existing talents while developing new skills. Our volunteers make a real difference - from providing a friendly first point of contact in visitor reception, to keeping the gardens and grounds looking their best, or providing a first-class welcome in the abbey itself. Help us keep Lacock special and give something back. If you want to start volunteering but don’t know where to begin, come along to our volunteer recruitment day and find out more.

Look inside a Lacock cottage

Monday 4 – Friday 8 February, 11am-3pm A great chance to explore the rooms behind one of Lacock’s closed doors as we open our holiday cottage, 2 High Street throughout the week. As one of the older buildings in the village, it is timber framed, with intriguing features and bags of character. Look out for the signs in the village to point you in the right direction, and why not see what else the village has to offer? Ocean Swimmer, Beth French

There's plenty to see and do, this spring, at Lacock Abbey

As we cast off old habits and start new ones, we’re setting goals for the year ahead in the gardens, village and abbey, imagining all the things we could show you. Invigorated by the appearance of snowdrops, crocuses and the sounds of birds shrilling through the crisp air, join our garden team on their early spring walks. The Watercolour project is picking up, and there’s much to learn about the conservation as the furnished rooms reopen at Lacock Abbey to some refreshed interpretation. Chilly days are best ended with cups of tea, so why not join us to celebrate Fox Talbot’s birthday on 11 February with a slice of cake in our Courtyard tea-room?

Don’t miss the regular flooding in the abbey fields as it proves a perfect grounding for snakeshead fritillaries to appear later in the season, keep your eyes peeled for these delicate blooms. What’s going on…

‘First Women UK’ photography exhibition at the Fox Talbot Museum & gallery Saturday 15 September - Sunday 3 February Anita Corbin’s First Women UK exhibition features portraits from celebrities and famous personalities from across the decades, including athletes, actors, politicians, musicians and businesswomen.

‘I wanted to create an impressive visual story of female potential: fantastic role models that will hopefully inspire other women and men, of all generations, now and in the future', says Corbin.

Touching on the radical inspiration for the work, she notes that portraiture has, as a discipline, favoured men: 'In a long history dominated by notable males, First Women asks "What is it about women that can inspire you?"' Valentine's Day flower count

Sat 9 - Sun 17 Feb, 10.30am-5pm Signifying the start of spring, colourful flowers are a welcome sign of the longer, warmer days to come. Every year around this time, we do a Valentine’s Day flower count. Our gardeners count up the number of blooms in the gardens and grounds here at Lacock. This, added to the results from all over the South West, gives us an indicator of what gardens are going to look like throughout the year. It also allows us to compare with previous years and see trends. From this we can build a picture of how spring flowers are affected by climate change. Why not come along and help us this year. Ask at Visitor reception or a gardener during your visit between Saturday 9 – Sunday 17 February.

Blow away the cobwebs and explore Lacock with our winter family trail 2 Jan - 15 Feb, 11am-4pm The bare trees make spotting wildlife easy at this time of year as little explorers feel the crunch of frost underfoot and look for animals up in the trees. What can you spot? Call 01249 730459 for details nationaltrust.org.uk/lacock #nationaltrust

When you visit, donate, volunteer or join the National Trust, your support helps us to look after special places in the south west such as Prior Park, Bath Skyline and Avebury for ever, for everyone.

Sharmanka, from the Russian word for barrel organ, is a performing mechanical theatre that will delight young and old alike. Sound and movement combine with striking images to make for a humorous and, at times, slightly macabre experience. The sculptures are the work of Russian born artist and inventor Eduard Bersudsky.

workshops and classes.

Families are also welcome, with free fortnightly drop-in sessions and fun activity sheets to provide a stimulating journey through each exhibition.

Collaborating with theatre director Tatyana Jakovskaya and light and sound designer Sergey Jakovsky, Eduard began producing his kinetic sculptures in 1974 as a protest against the prevailing Soviet ideology. The works incorporate pieces of old furniture, metal scrap and grotesque carved figures. Examples include Swinging Big Ben in which Time is moved on, cheerily and cheekily by a menagerie of industrious little creatures. In The Eternal Triangle of Love the jolly Harlequin and sad Pierotte have been competing for the love of Columbine so long that they have not noticed her transformation into the figure of Death.

Louise Bourgeois Prints 23 February – 7 May 2019

Accompanying Sharmanka is this Hayward Touring print exhibition by one of the most important and influential artists of recent decades, Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010). Best known for her powerful emotionally charged sculptures, this FrenchAmerican artist’s output grew increasingly expressive throughout her career. After many years focusing primarily on sculpture, Bourgeois returned to printmaking during the latter years of her life – from the 1980s until her death in 2010. The two series in this exhibition were made whilst she was in her eighties and have strong autobiographical themes, capturing some of her deepest thoughts, memories and anxieties.

Animals, exotic birds, fish, dinosaurs and species of flora, all on the edge or now extinct, have been made from a selection of throwaway material, especially Val’s favourite medium, drinks can metal. This exhibition presents a subtle message about recycling and preservation, raising awareness of why the creatures on show are endangered or extinct. Healthy eating It is understandable, when talking about eating healthier, that some people will switch off, fearing their quality of life will be somewhat downgraded. We've seen it many times before; a work colleague sitting down for lunch and opening up a large tupperware box full of pulses, boiled chicken and enough lettuce to keep the cast of Watership Down happy. It's enough to make anyone think twice; especially after an extremely well celebrated festive period.

So, fear not. You can improve your diet without sacrificing everything you hold dear. Here are a few ideas to start the year off on the right foot.

1. Eat (a better) breakfast

It's been called the most important meal of the day for a good reason. How we start the day will have a major effect on how we refuel throughout the day. There are many of us who skip breakfast because we think it will help us lose weight. In fact, eating breakfast can help us control our weight. How many of us who skip breakfast find they are likely to grab a mid-morning snack (crisps, biscuits etc). If a breakfast contains protein, then it will reduce the likelihood of needing a 'snack'. There are many breakfast ideas that contain protein and to make sure that a breakfast is balanced, it is worth adding fruit or veg as part of your 5/7 a day. Greek yoghurt and a chopped banana or blue berries are a quick and healthy option. And, remember the old saying of 'go to work on an egg'. An egg and cheese wrap/borrito style breakfast can be a real winner. Add in some black beans to really kick-start your day.

2. Stay hydrated

Our bodies are made up of 90% water, so it makes sense that we need to rehydrate; especially when we are active or in warm weather. If you make only one change to your diet, cutting out fizzy drinks is the easiest.

Fizzy drinks are packed with sugar (some over 35grams per can). If you are drinking cans of drink during the day, bottles of pop in the evening and even alcohol, then you are likely to be taking on board way over your daily allowance of sugar (which is 35grams a day). The government recommends 6 – 8 glasses of water a day on top of the water that forms part of the food we eat.

3. Reduce your salt intake

It is recommended that we take in 6grams of salt (or less) per day. Too much salt can cause raised blood pressure, which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke – one of the biggest killers in the UK. Many of the products on the shelves in supermarkets will have a lower salt option. Remember, I'm not saying cut it out completely, just choose wisely. Try choosing one food a week to check and swap when you're food shopping. If you are eating out, then there are still ways in which you can reduce your intake. The NHS website (nhs.uk/Live-well) gives us some top tips on how we can do this: Pizza: choose vegetable or chicken toppings instead of pepperoni, bacon or extra cheese. Pasta dishes: choose one with a tomato sauce with vegetables or chicken, rather than bacon, cheese or sausage.

Burgers: avoid toppings that can be high in salt, such as bacon, cheese and barbecue sauce, and opt for salad instead. Chinese or Indian meal: go for plain rice. It's lower in salt than pilau or egg fried rice. Sandwiches: instead of ham or cheddar cheese, go for fillings such as chicken, egg, mozzarella, or vegetables like avocado or roasted peppers. And try having salad and reduced-fat mayonnaise instead of pickle or mustard, which are usually higher in salt. Salad: ask for dressings or sauces on the side, so you only have as much as you need. Some dressings and sauces can be high in salt and fat.

4. Keep an eye on the right and wrong types of fat

We all need fat in our diet, but it does depend on what type of fat we consume as to whether it is good for us or not. There are two main types of fat: saturated and unsaturated. Too much saturated fat can increase the amount of cholesterol in the blood, which increases your risk of developing heart disease. It is recommended that the average man should consume no more than 30g of saturated fat per day, whereas a women should consume no more than 20g. You will find saturated fats in foods such as: sausages, cream, biscuits, pies and hard cheese. Choose foods that contain unsaturated fats instead, such as vegetable oils, oily fish and avocados. Aim to eat at least two portions of fish a week (one portion of oily fish). Oily fish contains omega-3 fats, which may help to prevent heart disease. Oily fish include: salmon, fresh tuna, sardines and mackerel.

5. Buy a slow-cooker

This may sound silly, but buying a slow cooker will reduce the risk of you stopping off at the chippy, or buying a microwave meal to take home. We've all been there. I'll get a takeaway, that will save time!

We know that a lot of these types of meal are full of sugar and will not be as nutritious as making yourself a hearty casserole, curry or bolognaise to come home to. You can pick up a slow cooker for around ÂŁ 20 these days. Finally, and most importantly:

6, Get active and be a healthy weight

Here is what the NHS says about getting active and being a healthy weight: Eating a healthy, balanced diet plays an essential role in maintaining a healthy weight, which is an important part of overall good health. Being overweight or obese can lead to health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, heart disease and stroke. Being underweight could also affect your health. Most adults need to lose weight, and need to eat fewer calories to do this. If you're trying to lose weight, aim to eat less and be more active. Eating a healthy, balanced diet will help: aim to cut down on foods that are high in saturated fat and sugar, and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Don't forget that alcohol is also high in calories, so cutting down can help you to control your weight. Physical activity can help you to maintain weight loss or be a healthy weight. Being active doesn't have to mean hours at the gym: you can find ways to fit more activity into your daily life. For example, try getting off the bus one stop early on the way home from work, and walking. Being physically active may help reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. For more ideas, see Get active your way. After getting active, remember not to reward yourself with a treat that is high in energy. If you feel hungry after activity, choose foods or drinks that are lower in calories, but still filling. If you're worried about your weight, ask your GP or a dietitian for advice and make 2019 the year of eating healthier.

Spring into a new season of healthy ingredients After a winter of root vegetables, hearty greens, broths and stews, the spring season and all its bountiful produce comes as a welcome sight for very sore eyes. For many of us, the new season offers up an opportunity to try out new ingredients, recipes and even if you are inclined, a new diet. Another great benefit of the spring season is locally sourced produce, learning what is in season where you live. Visiting your local Farmers Market will introduce you to both new ingredients, textures and flavours. Not only will the food be super fresh (usually picked within 24 hours) but you will be supporting your local community. So what should we be looking out for in our farm shops, markets and on our plates this spring? Spring brings with it an abundance of green vegetables which are low in fat, low in calories but high in protein and dietary fibre, with the likesa asparagus, cauliflower, broccoli, savoy cabbage, spinach, spring onion and watercress taking centre stage. As a fanastic accompanyment to a spring salad or co-starring alongside a selected cut of meat, these vegetables will be at their most tender at this stage of the year. We've hand-picked some spring season produce along with what to look out for and how to use them: Artichokes: Their main harvest takes place in the spring when the largest thistles are available. Look for artichokes with tight, compact leaves and fresh-cut stem ends. Artichokes can be used for soups but are perfect in pasta dishes and citrus dips. Asparagus: Harvested from March through June. The younger the shoots the better as these have yet to open out. Asparagus is a great accompliment to salads and is even better grilled or cooked, wrapped in locally sourced bacon.

Onions: The foundation to all soups, spring is the perfect time for the majority of onion varieties.

Rhubarb: Harvester in April and considered a fruit rather than a vegetable in the US, rhubarb stalks should be firm and and glossy. Without doubt, rhubarb pie or rhubarb crumble are two of the best spring desserts you can make. New Potatoes: With a thin, wispy skin and a crisp, waxy texture, new potatoes are best from April until early – mid summer. They are also sweeter the regular potatoes because their sugar has not yet converted into starch, and are therefore particularly suited to salads. Spinach: Although spinach can continue to grow throughout the winter, spring is the best time for the spinach leaves. High in antioxidants, especially when fresh, boiled or steamed, spinach is perfect in fish pie or with a little nutmeg as a leafy accompliment to steak. Finally, for meat eaters, if you are prepared to wait for May, then spring lamb is ingrained in Britain's bucolic, culinary history. Lamb is the only farmed animal in the UK that's at the mercy of the seasons. The earlier spring months are when British lamb is at its most succulent and its flavour at its most subtle (partly down to their impressive consumption of fresh grass). Althoughlamb is a very adaptable meat, used in curry's as well as stews and pies, you cannot beat a spring lamb on a Sunday afternoon. Spring lambs are typically 3 to 5 months old and are at their most tender with lamb aged between 1 and 2 years old (called 'hoggart') offering up a much stonger flavour and slightly less tender flesh; anything over 2 years is called mutton, which has much more flavour - but also a tougher flesh that needs slow-cooking to tenderise it.

We’ve made it our mission at Acorn to find ways to make plants not only interesting, but gourmet, to lift them to the centre of the plate and make them good for you and a luxury as well. then dine out with us, but if you want everyday solutions then you need to be more practical. Below are my top 3 tips on how to eat more vegetables and be healthier without a brigade of chefs in your kitchen responding to your very whim.

The positive effect of plants Richard Buckley

the meat at the centre of the plate with factory made, chemical-rich fake meats and tofus, this is just as bad for you, if not worse. To be truly healthy you have to make a positive choice to eat plants, and lots of them. The problem is that eating lots of vegetables and greens is hard and if you’ve never really cooked with them before, quite boring. We’ve made it our mission at Acorn to find ways to make plants not only interesting, but gourmet, to lift them to the centre of the plate and make them good for you and a luxury as well. We’d love you to, but the reality is you can’t eat with us every day, and you can’t cook like that often at home. It takes lots of chefs many hours to produce and when you’re tired and weary after a long week at work it’s the last thing on your mind. If you want to see the possibilities of plant based cooking

People always assume that eating vegetarian food is healthy. I suppose they think that, because of all the bad press red meat gets, simply not eating it must be healthier. Let me list some wonderful vegetarian foods – Mars Bars, Frozen Pizza, Chips, Pringles – The list goes on and on, you could eat these all day and be a perfect vegetarian. To be healthy you need to eat healthy things, not just avoid some unhealthy ones. The evidence is mounting that plants are, by a country mile, the healthiest food-stuffs around. Eating a diet rich in vitamin, mineral and phyto-nutrient packed greens and vegetables delivers vitality as well as a seemingly never-ending list of disease protecting benefits. This doesn’t mean replacing

Blend Your Veg – I make a smoothie every morning as soon as I wake up – This morning I’d eaten half a head of lettuce, 2 apples, half a lemon, a pear, a banana, ¼ of a cucumber and a finger of ginger before I’d even had a shower – it was delicious and took less time than making a coffee. Drinking smoothies from supermarkets isn’t the same, they’re pasteurised to extend shelf life thus killing most of the health giving benefits. Recipes abound online but if you don’t have the time pop into Beyond the Kale at Green Park Station – Their smoothies are the real deal and show just how easy and tasty healthy can be. Choose Whole Foods – It’s a hippy dippy vegetarian cliché, all those boring, worthy whole food stores, but there is real science behind it. Most of the nutrients in plants are in the bits we throw away, we strip out all the goodness to leave the sweet, starchy, sugary bits. All of a potato’s vitamins and nutrients are in the skin, the same goes for apples, white flour has almost zero vitamins or minerals, to the extent that they have to add it back in by law. If you want to be healthy, eat more vitamins and minerals and if you want to do this without changing your diet too much choose whole grains over white ones and buy organic veg and stop peeling it. Move the Meat to the Edge of the Plate - If you can’t bear to give up the meat then maximise your veg by making them the centre of your plate. Having a roast beef Sunday lunch? Fill your plate with carrots, broccoli and potatoes, cover them in gravy and have a little bit of beef on the side for flavour. Chicken with stir fry? How about stir fried veg with a chicken garnish?

The story of Saint Valentine

The tradition that romantics show their affection by exchanging tokens of love, letters and cards to their 'Valentine' on February 14th has been popular since the mid Seventeenth century in the UK. As many of us start to consider how we to spoil that special someone this year - a romantic meal, city break, an overly affectionate showering of gifts or just a bottle of plonk accompanied by chocolates and wine - have we ever wondered why this ritual exists and how it all began?

Valentine, defied the Emperors wishes and secretly performed weddings for young lovers desperate to commit their love to each other. Oysters: It sounds a bit clichĂŠd, but they really can spark randiness. These shellfish are brimming with zinc, a mineral that cranks up the production of testosterone, which has been linked to a higher sex drive. Red Wine: Red wine contains resveratrol, an antioxidant that helps boost blood flow and improves circulation before, allowing the blood to run faster and enhance the labido. Although there are a number of possible theories of who Saint Valentine was, one of the most feasible is that Valentine was a Roman priest who served during the third century in Rome. The Emperor at the time, Claudius II, decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, therefore, he outlawed marriage for young men so that he had a strong and fulsome Army. Valentine, defied the Emperors wishes and secretly performed weddings for young lovers desperate to commit their love to each other.

was written in 1415, is part of the manuscript collection of the British Library in London, England. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.

Champagne: Although there are no known aphrodisiac qualities in Champagne, the fact that you have gone that extra mile and paid that extra few quid to buy a nice bottle of Champagne will at least impress your other half into thinking that you are spoiling them.

Food and romance have been succesful bedfellows since the beginning of time. For those who are feeling a little amorous the recipe for a perfect Valentine's Day should contain foods with aphrodisiac qualities:

And if not, maybe the bubbles will get them!

Imprisoned for his treachery, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who many believe to have been the jailer's daughter, who visited him during his confinement. Before he died, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still used in many Valentine's cards today. Although there are several theories about Saint Valentine, what is apparent in all the accounts of his life is his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure.

Chocolate; cocoa contains the chemical phenylethylamine, a stimulant that conjures just the sort of subtle feelings of well-being and excitement that can lead to other things.....

Although Valentine's Day has become more commercialised and marketable in recent years with pre-written cards and heart emblazoned cuddly toys; make this year special for your Valentine with a handwritten note like our original Saint Valentine.

Many suggest that the importance of February 14th comes down to the fact that this was the day that Valentine died. Others point to the beginning of the bird's matting season in Europe, adding to the ideal that the middle of February should be the day for romance. The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which

Stuffed mussels

Preperation Time: 30 mins Serves: 2 Ingredients:

24 very large live mussels 1 thick slice bread from a day-old loaf 25g/1oz walnut halves 100g butter , cubed 4 garlic cloves, roughly chopped 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice 1 tbsp grated parmesan 3 tarragon sprigs, leaves stripped and roughly chopped small bunch curly parsley, roughly chopped

Method:

Scrub the mussels really well and remove the beards. Discard any with damaged shells and those that don’t shut tight when tapped on the edge of the sink. Rinse well. Put all the mussels in a medium saucepan and cover with a tight-fitting lid. Place over a high heat and cook for 2 mins, shaking the pan halfway, until all the shells have steamed open but the mussels are only just cooked. Discard any that don’t open. Tip into a colander and leave to cool. Tear the bread into rough pieces, put in a food processor and blend into crumbs. Rub the walnuts between your hands to remove some of the papery skins. Add the walnuts, butter, garlic, lemon juice and Parmesan to the crumbs. Season with a good pinch of salt and ground black pepper. Blitz until all the ingredients begin to blend. Add the herbs to the stuffing and blend until combined with the butter. Heat the grill to its hottest setting. Take each mussel and carefully prise off one half of each shell. Drain away any excess liquid. Place the mussels in their remaining shells on a small baking tray. Using a teaspoon and your finger, divide the stuffing mixture between each mussel shell, making sure the mussel itself is fully covered. Place the tray fairly close to the grill and cook for about 2 mins until the stuffing is pale golden brown and the mussels are hot and surrounded by the melted butter. Transfer the shells to 2 plates and eat straight away. Recipe courtesy of Good Food magazine

Although some may question the origins of Valentine's Day, its popularity has spread around the world with may countries celebrating the saints day in weird and wonderful ways.

Japan

In Japan, women make the first move on Valentine’s Day. They give men gifts of two different types of chocolate; one is called Giri-choco, the other is Honmei-choco. Giri-choco is the most costly but Honmei-choco tends to be home made and given more as a gift to a loved one. Men return the gesture on March 14. Known as White Day, men give women white chocolate and other white gifts as a sign of their affection.

South Korea

As in Japan, women in South Korea give gifts to men on Valentine’s Day (14 February), while men celebrate White Day. South Korea has a third holiday, however, known as Black Day. Celebrated on April 14, single friends gather to eat noodles and celebrate being single.

Brazil

Brazil's Carnival celebration overshadows Valentine’s Day. So as not to miss out, Brazilians mark a similar day later in the year, on June 12. The holiday is called Dia dos Namorados, or Lovers’ Day. Flowers, cards, gifts and romantic meals are offered, but instead of St Valentine, the Brazilians celebrate St Anthony's Day.

Burns, baby Burns

poems. His book - the 'Kilmarnock edition' caused him to reconsider his plans to emigrate. Burns decided to continue his literary development by visiting Edinburgh. Here he was being fĂŞted by an Edinburgh society eager to meet the man described by Henry Mackenzie as the 'Heaven-taught ploughman'.

Born on January 25th 1759, in Alloway, Scotland, Robert Burns early life doesn't read like that of a national hero. But in his short life (Burns died aged just 37), he had taken the Scottish literary world by storm, and had secured a place for himself in history and in legend.

With a rich social life but from an upbringing that taught him hard work, and the ways of the land, Burns became a freemason (of St David's Lodge, Tarbolton), in 1781. His lifelong connection with freemasonry provided a constant social support as well offering him connections to influential parties.

It wasn't long before Burns became part of the social fabric in Edinburgh, developing relations with The Earl of Glencairn and William Creech who helped fund and promote (respectively) a second volume of poems called 'The Edinburgh edition'. This new edition of work would include a 'slight pilgrimage to the classic scenes of this country', giving Burns an opportunity to travel the Highlands and Borders that both influenced his work as well as its readers to name him the 'Scottish Bard'.

Burns father was a tenant farmer, and although not rich, wanted the best for his son and in the established Scottish tradition made sure young Robert was well educated. Burns attended a local school, set up by his father and four neighbours, with an 18-year-old called John Murdoch as teacher. Burns received instruction in Latin, French and mathematics and it was also about this time (aged 15) that Burns turned his hand to poetry.

After his fathers death in 1874, Burns become a regular churchgoer ('Kirk'). Its strong links to the rural community along with its guardianship of public morality would serve as much as a crutch as a temptation to test the resolve of those at the 'Kirk'.

In 1787, Burns became involved in a number of musical projects, collecting words and music for all Scottish songs. Burns made a major contribution to the collection with the publication eventually running to six volumes of 100 songs each.

The years 1784 to 1785 were some of Burns's most prolific periods. Robert was working on his farm in Mossgiel, writing poetry, living with Jean Armour, who was pregnant by him, it seemed that things had worked out well for Burns. Unfortunately, not all in the garden was rosey. Armour's marriage to Burns was opposed by her father, the farm was not profitable, the only way out, it seemed, was to emigrate.

During this time Burns sent a copy of an original song to the Scots Musical Museum with the remark, "The following song, an old song, of the olden times, and which has never been in print, nor even in manuscript until I took it down from an old man." Some of the lyrics were indeed "collected" rather than composed by the poet but It is a fair to attribute the rest of the poem/ song 'Auld Lang Syne' to Burns.

His plans to sail to the Caribbean were well advanced when he was advised by a local lawyer, Gavin Hamilton that to finance the voyage he should publish some of his poems. At a cost of three shillings, the entire print-run of 612 copies sold out within a month, justifying his belief in his abilities and in the merit of his

From 1788 Burns attempted to go back and farm at Ellisland, but yet again this would prove fruitless. In September 1789 he began work for the Excise at Dumfries. Though he performed these duties diligently and compassionately, charges of political disloyalty were raised against him.

Along with an education came a developing social life. Not only was Burns learning about the world but whilst working on his father's fields he met a young girl named Nelly. He soon found himself filed with passion for what he would later call "man's first great pleasure in life," and wrote one of his earliest poems about the girl. As the young Burns grew, so did his success with women. Male friends would comment that Burns would leave them at a tavern if a feminine opportunity presented itself. He would later go on to have fourteen children with six different mothers.

How to create your own Burns Night celebrations Although he died over 220 years ago, It's Burns' ability to empathise with the human condition that makes him as relevant and as popular today than even in his own time.

At the same time failing health, which he sought to remedy by sea-bathing, overshadowed his literary and musical output. Years of hard physical labour working on a series of unproductive farms aggravated his long-standing heart condition. This lead to his premature death at the age of 37 on 21 July 1796. Scotland went into mourning; ten thousand people attended his funeral and he was later named national poet of Scotland. In a typically poetic style, on the day of his funeral, his wife gave birth to their youngest son, Maxwell. In 1801, some of Burns' friends and admirers decided to honor the departed poet with a dinner. Each year they would meet, read Burn's poems, drink Whisky and offer up a feast of Haggis (stuffing a sheep's heart, liver and lungs with oatmeal and spices into the stomach lining) whilst giving out a boisterous rendition of late Bard's poem "Address to a Haggis”. In recent years, 'Burns Night' has become one of the most popular events on a hotel or restaurants social calendar. People from all different backgrounds come to enjoy a night of socialising, singing and to try a mouthful or two of Haggis. Although the origins of Burns Night derives from a countries love of one man's ability to connect its people through romantic poetry, I'm sure, with the life he led Robert Burns wouldn't mind.

At New Year all over the world, his poem 'Auld Lang Syne', a sincere expression of friendship is sung and suppers are celebrated on his birthday (25th January) each year with traditional dishes of haggis and whisky along with recitals of his best-loved work. Although there are many fine eateries willing to celebrate the event with a 'Burns Supper', here are some tips on creating your own night of celebrating the 'Scottish Bard'. You may not be able to play the bagpipes, but having some pipes playing in the background as you welcome you guests is a good alternative. The host of the event will then welcome his or her guests as they take their seats with a short speech. Once guests are seated, Burns’ famous Selkirk Grace is read. Dining begins with a soup course. This is usually a classic Scottish soup such as cock-a-leekie soup, Scotch broth or potato soup. Following the soup course, the main feature of any formal Burns’ night is the piping of the haggis. Lights are dimmed (cue bagpipe CD) with bagpipes welcoming the haggis to the host’s table. The tune performed is usually one of Robert Burns’ compositions. Once the haggis has arrived at the table, the host will read the Address To A Haggis. This is a performative poem celebrating haggis, with prompts instructing the host when to draw and sharpen their knife, and when to slice the haggis. The haggis must be sliced from end to end in a proper ceremony. It is tradition for guests to then drink a toast of Scotch whisky to the haggis.

For more information on Robert Burns or to visit his birthplace, visit the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum in Alloway, Scotland or go to www.burnsmuseum.org.uk.

With guests seated and haggis served, side dishes of mashed potatoes and swedes make up the main course. This is sometimes followed by dessert and cheese courses, usually they too are made to a traditional Scottish recipe. The whole meal is washed down with another glass of Scotch whisky.

Burns Night 2019 Friday 25th January

After the meal, a selection of toasts are given. Like the meal itself, these follow a specific order which must be observed. It is also at this point that the host (or guests) give a celebration of

Robert Burns. This is usually a reflection on Burns’ life or work. Very popular in Scotland. The speech can be either humorous or serious. It ends with a toast to the immortal memory of Robert Burns.

At New Year all over the world, his poem 'Auld Lang Syne', a sincere expression of friendship is sung, and suppers are celebrated on his birthday (25th January) each year with traditional dishes of haggis and whisky along with recitals of his best-loved work Although not designed to be offensive, a toast of thanks are then made to the women who prepared the meal, this address has become much more involved in recent years. At the end of the speech, all the assembled men drink a toast to the women’s health (Obviously, times have changed, so this element of the traditon can be removed if offence is caused). One of the reasons the male speaker dare not be too offensive is that his speech gets a response from the women in the room. An elected female speaker will share her views on men and reply to any comments made by the previous male speaker. The penultimate part of the evening, and perhaps the longest, is a series of readings of Burns’ poetry or the singing of his songs. There may also be songs and poems influenced by Burns’ work. Finally, the host will call upon one of the guests to give a vote of thanks. Once this is done, guests will stand, hold hands, and sing Auld Lang Syne to bring an end to the evening. If this all sounds a little too fanciful or too much like hard work, you can always tailor your own version of the evening. Alternatviely, there are a number of restaurants who will be more than happy to cater for you at one of their Burns Night events.

Burns Night Celebration at Pump Room Bath Burns Night is held in honour of Scotland's most famous poet, Robert “Rabbie” Burns - a tradition started by his friends when he died in 1796. Now, every year on his birthday, well-wishers gather to celebrate the famous composer of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ and ‘Scots Wha Hae’, once an unofficial Scottish national anthem. To honour the rituals of this age-old occasion, Pump Room Bath is putting on a night of poetry, music, Scottish dancing and a delicious fourcourse meal including celebration of the famous Haggis. Arrive to a sparkling drinks reception around the torch-lit waters of the Roman Baths and take in the atmospheric steam rising from this ancient monument as a piper plays you into dinner. Served in the Georgian Pump Room under glittering chandeliers, dinner will start with a delicious Cullen skink or spicy parsnip soup shot, followed by the star of the show, the Haggis. Historically made with offal by hunters using the cleaned animal’s stomach as a cooking bag, this is now more akin to a crumbly sausage, with an oaty texture and warming peppery flavour.

Sustainable and diverse wine making in Australia. In my columns of the past 20 + years I hope to have informed many readers of indigenous or unusual grape varietals whilst on my wine travels. The usual suspects like Shiraz, Cabernet, Chardonnay etc when planted in historic vineyards in well known or ancient sites are historically the correct choice decided by trial and error over many, many years. National or local wine regulations would often not allow new varietals unless special permission is sought and approved. The “newer” wine making countries have none of this beauracratic problem as propagation after quarantine is often encouraged as winemakers seek new styles in favoured sites. One pioneer of this system was Robert Hill Smith and his winemaking team from Yalumba in South Australia who planted the White Rhone grape Viognier on selected vineyards. 20 or more years later this so called experiment has produced some wonderful examples of this rather funky grape creating fine apricot and citrus scented wines. It was therefore a pleasure to reply Yes to Wines of Australia’s kind invitation to taste. 120 wines made with different grape varietals sourced from around the world. Held at the wonderful Australia House in the Strand I eagerly signed in and met Laura Jewell, Master of Wine who as head of UK wine operations for Wines of Australia had curated this extraordinary tasting, assembling such an intriguing and frankly breathtaking selection of wines made with some grapes I had never tasted. Where to start! With around 50 tasters all heading for the tasting table with the whites as their quarry I headed for the Roses and relative quiet! First wine was made with two northern Italian varietals namely Sangiovese and Nebbiolo better known for making Chianti and Barolo respectively. The Sangiovese made by Vinea Marson in Heathcote delivered ripe unctuous fruit that truly delighted the palate. Next grapes originating from southern Italy this time Nero d’Avola and Aglianico hailing from Sicily and Campania respectively. Deeper coloured Rose here with a distinctive funk of red fruit, herbs and a “Campari” bitterness! What was not to like? On to the 43 white wines ready to taste. I tasted them all swirling and spitting at a pace. Star performing wines from 24 different grape varietals were shining amongst the elegance of Australia House and its traditional majesty not that these upstarts cared too much about that! First stella wines tasted were made again with a couple of Italian grapes this time Arneis (northern Italy) and Fiano from the south. My picks were Dal Zotto Arneis from King Valley in Victoria

40 inbath

and Tertini Wines from the Southern Highlands (due south of Sydney) in NSW. Arneis is subtle and food friendly wine offering a stone fruit note with oft a meadow field bouquet. These did! The Fiano grape is a tad ballsier with a deeper scent of candied fruit and leafiness. My fav choices were from Chalmers Heathcote (VictorIa) and Larry Cherubino’s Lassez Fair from Western Australia’s Franklin River. Delicious, elegant wines from two much different zones indicate extensive professional work has gone into making these modern wines. Next a great white wine from Pike and Joyce who made a classically styled Gruner Veltliner in Adelaide Hills (coolish climate) the great white grape originating from Austria. White pepper and unripe stone fruit came into my palate and onto my notebook! And then a beauty from the unruly lot at d’Arenberg from McLaren Vale with a heat busting Roussanne showing huge structure and weight over a herbal finish. The Reds called starting with the elegant Mencia grape originating from Castille y Lyon in Northern Spain but this time elaborated by Olivers Taranga Vineyards in McLaren Vale. In South Australia Truly subtle and floral were its guise. Next were 10 Tempranillo dashed wines again another fabled grape from Spain. I had heard of great things of this grape in Australia and so it proved. All 10 were amazing my pick the eucalyptus scented Bellweather Wines from Wrattonbully. It showed blue fruit with brilliant acidity. One for keeping! I then breezed through the rest of the Reds with highlights from the grapes Nebbiolo, Sangrantino, Duriff and Nero d’Avola. Each one showed some part of their heritage and expected taste but I also discovered daring and funk. This was a very special tasting showing just what those darn Aussies can do, and do it well. As with many wine makers world wide Australia are endeavouring to produce wonderful wine using sustainable growing and elaborating principles. Most of these wonderful wines are available via the Internet with a simple search...

Health and fitness

Kim will help your train like a professional

Train like a GB Athlete

GB skeleton athlete, Kimberely Murray, knows what it takes to be at the peak of physical fitness. Along with her ambition of representing her country at the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022, the Isle of Wight native runs her own personal training and coaching business, KimFit. Whilst on pre-season training in Lillehamme, we caught up with Kim to talk fitness and get some tips on how you can train like a professional athlete.

Athletes are the best in the world at what they do right? Being fit, strong, powerful, skilled… it’s their (my) job.They are essentially experts in the field of performance so why not take note of the behaviours the exhibit to give your health and fitness a little boost? What am I talking about? Athletes are genetically gifted, receive huge investments and have the privilege of training full-time. Well, I’m not going to lie, these factors are all very important. BUT there are a lot of basics that underpin the superhuman performances, and by adopting these behaviours you can supercharge your training too! I’m going to kick off with a curveball. In order to achieve your health and fitness goals, rest (yes rest!) is key. You may or may not know but athletes love to sleep. This isn’t because we’re lazy, it’s because sleep is amazing for recovery. Our body adapts not when we are training; but when we are resting. Now an afternoon nap is probably not available to most people but some quality sleep is. Establish a bedtime routine, leave the phone in the lounge and get a good nights kip. Next up, we’re going to get basic. Whatever exercise you choose to do (and just chose something you like rather than the latest fad) ensure you incorporate a suitable warm up and cool down as bookends to the session. Five to 10 minutes is plenty to prime your body for exercise and to stretch out afterwards. A warm up should increase you body temperature and prepare (or activate) the muscles you’re about to use. I always warm up, and the more thorough the warm up the better I perform in the session. Time to mention nutrition and diet. Or not. I am going to scrap both those terms and speak about nourishment instead. What I put in my body serves to fuel every training session I do;

and it’s the same for you. Food is fuel and it can massively impact how you feel and perform. I do not restrict myself from eating any foods, nor do I count calories. I chose my meals and snacks based on how much I am training (expending), what I like to eat and how it will serve to nourish me. I’d implore you to find balance and do the same.

We also have great stress busting classes in the shape of Boxercise and Body Combat where participants are able to learn boxing techniques and moves to make them feel like the next Anthony Joshua or Nicola Adams!

I do not restrict myself from eating any foods, nor do I count calories. I chose my meals and snacks based on how much I am training (expending), what I like to eat and how it will serve to nourish me.

Lastly, athletes will sacrifice an awful lot to achieve their dream. I have wanted to be an Olympian for as long as I can remember; it is what drives me to push myself and go beyond what I believe my limits to be. I make decisions based on how it will affect my performance and long term goal. Having these big, exciting goals helps keep me motivated when I am tired, or injured, or missing out on something.

I challenge you to set yourself a goal and write it down. And if I could be so bold whilst you’re thinking about your goal, I’d ask you to think beyond an aesthetic or number on the scales. Let’s embrace the movement away from body transformations and determining our self-value by the way we look. Forget summer bodies, let’s nourish and care for our bodies all year round; like an athlete. If we centre our goals around what our bodies can achieve and focus on health or performance rather than a clothes size then it’s more than likely that you’ll feel good and look good.

Finally, our much talked about Yoga classes will help to stretch out those achy muscles and bring balance to your training. Our members and guests are even able to benefit from guided meditation sessions. All our instructors are fully qualified with heaps of experience and energy. Our studio is a light, bright space which is well equipped with the latest fitness tools and apparatus from battle ropes, sandbags and boxing gloves to yoga blocks, bands and cosy blankets.

That's way my 'Split Fit Programs' have helped so many including the A good example of going deep on your why: following 3 clients Why do I want to lose weight? Because I want to feel good. But how do you make these resolutions last past the second weekend in February? It’s all well and good setting the goals, but here are my top tips to help you reach them.

Get out of a fitness pot hole!

Understand the habits you have that you wish you could break. It could be … Going home after work and failing to get back out to the gym? Or do you always workout on the weekend but struggle to get active in the week? How about finding it hard waking up early to get to the gym? My best advice is to start by making a list of the habits you currently have that you would like to change and start to set mini goals. Once you’ve completed this, put the list in order of priority. Remember that you’ve probably heard a million times before - make sure these goals and new habits are realistic. Any goal is possible but you have to make sure you are giving yourself realistic parameters for achieving it.

Know your motivation

Make an achievable plan

Start out by setting a clear goal that you want to work towards; it could be run a marathon as an example. Now the key is to set smaller week by week plans on how you will achieve that overall goal. One of the main reasons people fail to sustain their behaviour change is because they attempt to change too much at once and don’t have a plan on how to do it. Short term small goals (daily or weekly) are easier to sustain than individual large goals (monthly or quarterly). By writing it down you are affirming that the change is going to happen. And remember, it takes 21 days for a new activity to become a habit and six months for a habit to become a part of your lifestyle. It doesn’t happen overnight so be patient and don’t beat yourself up or quit if you struggle along the way. It’s all a part of the process. Just keep it at!

Get support from others

Sometimes we set New Year’s resolutions without really digging deep and asking ourselves why that particular goal is important to us.

It’s always harder to cancel on a fitness class if you’ve committed to going with a friend, just like it’s hard to forget your goals if you’ve told your gym buddy/personal trainer/friend/family member about them.

Knowing your ‘why?’ can help keep you on track when there’s a chance to step back into old habits.

By talking to others about the change you are more likely to get the support you may need when you need it and may find that others have

All this at over 70 year old. Client 3: I had a client who came to me with severe headaches and had booked in for a deep tissue massage. I cured the headaches after one session and fixing body complaints is my main client base. This is where it got interesting. As with all my clients I tested her Bio mechanics with 4 screenings that most commonly fail. We discovered her length was out. Her right leg was shorter than her left. With a select set muscles in spasm.

If you want to take your health and fitness that one step further then joining a Gym or Fitness Club will not only give you that impetus to make 2017 a healthier one, but will also open up a new group of friends to boost your social calendar. If the thought of signing up to a 12 month contract at your local gym seems a little too expensive then there are many other less expensive ways to get healthier and lose pounds in weight rather than financially.

Keep a fitness tracker

You’ve written down your fitness habits, you’ve Come find out more at got your plan - now it’s time to keep track of what www.owenmorganmassagetherapy.com you’re doing. Doing this is a good way to see how you’re heading towards your goals. Did you lift 10kg for the first time? Plank for the longest you’ve ever planked? Run the longest yours’ve ever run? Write it down. Not only is it good to keep checking back that you are still on schedule to achieve what you set out to do but it is also a great motivational tool to see how far you have come.

Think outside the box

If you’re struggling to reach your fitness goals, could there be another reason? There isn’t enough emphasis on how beneficial and how great sleep is for you. Sleep is a large part of being and staying healthy, and allowing your body to recover. Sleep controls your immune system, ageing process and metabolism. One night of bad or no sleep can have a major affect on your body, your mental health and your mood. I recommend at least seven hours sleep, where you will notice a difference in your energy levels and how your body functions. Taking the above into consideration I believe will help you on successfully turning your New Year resolution into a lifestyle change for the Better.

mental health with Anna Williamson

Anna Williamson is a television presenter, radio broadcaster, life coach, counsellor, Master NLP practitioner and author of the bestselling book Breaking Mad. She is also an Ambassador for Mind, Childline and The Prince's Trust. Anna now runs her own private coaching practice offering those in need 1 to 1 coaching sessions, alongside being a media agony aunt and expert in the parenting sector having written Breaking Mum And Dad: The Insider's Guide To Parenting Anxiety. As part of our 'self-improvement' focus, we speak exclusively to Anna about mental health issues and how we can be manage it in todays rapidly changing world.

You use a very simple ‘Rate my state’ activity to guage a persons feelings. How does it work?

I have been a presenter for over 18 years now, wow! It was when I presenting the ITV kids show Toonattik that I experienced a person of prolonged stress and anxiety that it went unchallenged or unspoken by me for too long.... I ended up suffering with daily debilitating panic attacks, and had a breakdown. I was then diagnosed with GAD and panic disorder with a bit of depression thrown in.

My books are all about simple but effective techniques and activities that you can do anywhere, anytime.

Absolutely, it's vital we see mental and physical health as a whole. We need both to work alongside each other. Physical and mental health directly impact and compliment each other so we need to looks after both equally. Is anxiety something that can be concurred or managed/understood?

56 inbath

It's vital, talking is hands down the most important part of managing and maintaining mental health and emotional wellbeing. If we keep problems, worries and stresses inside our head, they will eventually boil over like a pressure cooker. Early intervention and prevention of a more severe mental health problem can often be helped by talking in the very first instance to someone trusted.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you came to realise that you were struggling with anxiety?

So, is mental health (and how we maintain it) as important as physical health?

Anna Williamson

An individuals state of mental health is not as obvious as their physical one. Therefore, how important is communication/talking about issues?

We all have anxiety and a healthy level of it is vital in keeping us safe and risk averse. It's when other life events happen, or thoughts and feelings start to trigger the anxiety response when we don't actually need it. This can be frightening and debilitating.

Rate My State is all about noticing how you are feeling on a day to day basis. Noticing and documenting any change in patterns, any habits or times when you might be more worried/ill than others ....when we build up evidence that we can physically 'see', it gives us the empowerment and knowledge to start to make changes and do something about anything that needs attention. It seems that in this day and age, we are being bombarded with new and exciting influences that may have an affect on our mental health (social media, mobile phones etc). What are your tips on how to manage these influences as an individual and a parent? Technology and social media has undoubtedly had an impact on our mental health, and unfortunately not in a positive way often. We have a tendency to measure ourselves against others on social media, it can be overwhelming, and it can make some feeling fragile, and feel even worse on occasions.

We are also connected 24/7 and this isn't healthy, not allowing for our mind to shut down and rest and recover - vital for good all round health. Choose times of the day to come off technology completely, and particularly a good hour before bedtime, ban phones in the bedroom, and create clear boundaries about when you or your children can be 'scrolling' online.

Parents are also experiencing these influences for the first time. How important is it for parents, to not only prioritise their own mental health, but to focus on our childrens? It's a constant conversation. Having an open attitude to talking about mental health within the family unit will help in ensuring it's not a taboo subject and also promotes respect and boundaries for everyone regardless of age. As parents we have to set an example too, so being mindful of social media and technology use is also really important in order to guide children appropriately.

As parents we have to set an example too, so being mindful of social media and technology use is also really important in order to guide children appropriately.

What is the difference between anxiety and stress?

Off the Record Bath and North East Somerset (OTR) improves the emotional health and wellbeing of young people.

Stress, anxiety and depression can all interlinked in various ways. Stress though is often a reaction to something in particular, a stressor, anxiety often has no identifiable root. Anxiety is based around fear, and stress is more associated with frustration, nervousness and pressure. Are there any clear signs of anxiety we can look out for in our children or friends? Noticing any behaviour that has changed is a key thing to look out for. Feeling unusually agitated, avoiding certain situations or people, experiencing sleep issues, and being withdrawn are signs that someone isn't coping and is perhaps experiencing unhealthy anxiety. Did researching anxiety for your book ‘Breaking Mad’ help you understand and manage your own mental health? Would you recommend people research their own issues? Writing all my books, Breaking Mad, Breaking Mum and Dad, and How Not to Lose It have all been cathartic in a way for me. However, it's important to remember that I have trained in various types of talking therapies, and as a registered and insured practitioner I have mandatory supervision from experienced therapists to help me 'process' anything I'm left with emotionally professionally and personally. Researching ones own symptoms should be exercised with caution as the internet can often throw up scary inaccuracies. It's always advisable to speak to a trained professional for help and support, but of course, books, articles, and videos can all be hugely helpful is learning more about how one is feeling and practicing self care.

We want every young person in Bath and North East Somerset and beyond to be emotionally healthy, confident and empowered in themselves.

We provide a range of free services for young people aged 10-25 including counselling, listening support, youth participation, advocacy and specialist groups and a LGBT+ focused youth group. You're hired! With more and more learners trading their UCAS applications for Apprenticeships with companies that will not only train them, but pay them as well; we look at the beneďŹ ts of taking the apprenticeship route for learners and businesses alike.

58 inbath

4 to 8 March 2019 Since 2015, the government requires all young people to stay in some form of education or training until at least their 18th birthday. As many students start to consider their options after secondary education, we outline information and benefits about apprenticeships as a key route into a successful career.

What is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16, living in England. There are different entry requirements depending on the sector and job. Apprenticeships give you the opportunity to work for a real employer, earn a real salary and gain a real qualification whilst gaining valuable workplace skills and experience. All apprentices should work for at least 30 hours a week, apart from in exceptional circumstances.

What are the benefits?

Apprenticeships are now available up to degree level and beyond. Over 50 national universities are currently offering a range of degree apprenticeships with more to be confirmed throughout the year. Earning a salary and paid holiday; Excellent progression opportunities, whether looking to study further or climb the ranks within the workplace; Increased future earning potential – apprentices enjoy marked salary increases on finishing their training and those completing a higher apprenticeship could see increased earnings of an estimated £150,000 over their lifetime.

What levels are there?

There are various levels of apprenticeship to apply for depending on current skills and qualifications. Apprenticeships have equivalent educational levels: Name Intermediate Advanced Higher Degree

Level Equivalent level 2 5 GCSE passes 3 2 A level passes 4, 5, 6 and 7 Foundation degree and above 6 and 7 Bachelor’s or master’s degree

All apprenticeships include elements of on the job and off the job training leading to industry recognised standards or qualifications. Some apprenticeships will require an assessment at the end of the programme to assess the apprentice`s ability and competence in their job role. Some apprenticeship vacancies will display the `Positive about disabled` logo meaning the employer has agreed to take action to meet five commitments regarding the employment, retention, training and career development of disabled employees. Any disabled candidate applying for vacancies showing this logo will be guaranteed an interview as long as they meet the requirements for the job being applied for (these policies have recently changed (July 2017)).

Salaries

The minimum wage for apprentices is £3.70 per hour (as of April 2018), but many employers pay more than this. This is dependant on the sector, region and apprenticeship level e.g. some higher apprenticeships pay upto £500 per week.

Future commitments

During the Queen’s speech (21 June 2017), the government renewed its commitment to “ensuring people have the skills they need for the high-skilled, high-wage jobs of the future”. Apprenticeships minister, Anne Milton, is focused on creating three million apprentices by 2020. From April, large businesses will be able to invest up to 25% of their apprenticeship levy to support apprentices in their supply chain. Some employers will pay half of what they currently pay for apprenticeship training – from 10% to 5%. The government will pay the remaining 95%. More details will be available in early 2019.

National Apprenticeships Week National Apprenticeship Week is coordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service and is designed to celebrate apprenticeships and traineeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy. The objective of National Apprenticeship Week is to increase awareness and take-up of apprenticeships and traineeships. The next National Apprenticeships Week will take place on March 4 - 8 2019.

Why do we need Apprenticeships?

A more engaged workforce: 92% of employers who employ apprentices believe that apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce. Lower staff turnover, fewer skills-related vacancies and reduced recruitment costs: 83% of employers who employ apprentices rely on their apprenticeships programme to provide the skilled workers that they need for the future. One in five employers are hiring more apprentices to help them through the tough economic climate. Increased competitiveness: 80% of employers that employ apprentices agree they make their workplace more productive. A better image and greater customer satisfaction: 81% of consumers favour using a company which takes on apprentices.

Is a Degree Apprenticeship right for me?

Degree apprenticeships are similar to higher apprenticeships, but differ in that they provide an opportunity to gain a full bachelor's degree (Level 6) or master’s degree (Level 7). These programmes are being developed by employers, universities, and professional bodies working in partnership. Degree apprenticeships combine working with studying part-time at a university. Apprentices are employed throughout the programme, and spend part of their time at university and the rest with their employer. This can be on a day-to-day basis or in blocks of time, depending on the programme and requirements of the employer. Currently, the scheme is only available in England and Wales, although applications may be made from all parts of the UK.

Insider knowledge What will the interior of 2019 look like?

From neutral pallets to mid-century inspired furniture, velvet fabrics and space-age themes; we consider them all and get some thoughts from local designers on their predictions for the interiors trends of 2019.

Living Room:

Understandibly, there has been a lot of emphasis on both the bedroom and bathroom being havens of tranquility; the rooms where we need to relax and unwind. However, the living room of 2019 has seen a plethora of design ideas that follow this mantra. For the past few years, greys have dominated the colour scheme of the living room, but with a new year comes a focus on a more neutral palette. Warmer, friendlier tones of oatmeal and stonewashed linen are to be the order of the day for 2019. If you prefer to add a bit of texture to your walls, then velvet is the “it” fabric of the moment. With the potential of crushed velvet pillows or eyecatching upholstered walls — there are many opportunities to embrace this versatille fabric. If you prefer a running theme in your home, velvet is also a great addition to the bedroom. Many of our interior inspirations will come from places we have been or stayed. One trend that has taken off recently, and is seen everywhere from hotels to restaurants, bars to appartments, is 1950's chic. Names such as Eames, Bertoia and Saarinen have inspired furniture designers for decades, using materials like steel, wood and leather to help create an avant-garde look. Todays designers are creating their own 'midcentury modern', with space-age styled furniture that showcases irregular shapes and tapered legs to inspire a new generation of interiors. Continuing the 'space age' theme, constellations and stars are a popular décor feature. If you want to be in trend, it’s time to add some sophisticated astronomy and zodiac patterns, star-strewn plates, galaxy murals, galactic surfaces and cosmic tile work.

DIning Room:

If you are considering updating your dining room this year, there are a number of colour schemes, fabrics, textures and accessories that will leave the neighbours wanting to 'keep up with the Jones's'. A statement wall has traditionally been the staple of the living room in recent years, but experts agree that this trend will now be seen in the dining room of 2019. Look out for velvet dining chairs in deep reds, greys and greens as these colours compete to be the tone of the new year. As with the living room of 2018, wallpaper will make a cameo

64 inbath

appearence with colourful patterns and prints idominating a feature wall. Dining tables take on new shapes and textures this year with round tables in marble complimented by vintage chairs and mid-century lighting such as a unique chandelier. As with the living room, velvet fabrics will also take a prominent role, with classic minimalist chairs creating a vintage look with a modern twist. Accessories to look out for include futuristic vases and bowls to sit on the dining table, rugs in polka dot or block pastel colours to break up the flooring, as well as understated wall art that includes line drawings and block colours.

Look out for velvet dining chairs in deep reds, greys and greens; as they compete to be the tone of the new year.

Bedroom:

In any home, the bedroom should act as a sanctuary from the outside world. Last years opulence of four-poster beds and dark broody, boutique-style tones are replaced with softer, white or very light walls. A white-themed bedroom looks clean, chic and elegant and has an air of calm. Dress it up with an accent wall that creates focus or by adding colour tones through cushions, throws and wall art. Balance is the key word in the bedroom, as experts suggest selecting different sized furniture (for example, a thinner bed frame with prominent side tables) to allow a room to breathe. For those who are more daring, explore bolder colours, and try using a monochromatic approach. Different shades of the same colour can work, but be careful to choose the right color based on your taste and availability of bedroom furnishings in that same shade. If you add accessories, select those that enhance the hues, tones, and tints of the primary colour. Remember, you can have too much of a good thing. There is no doubt that the theme throughout the home of 2019 is mid-century modern - even the bedroom cannot resist the urge with decorative bedside tables, chaise lounge and foot stools taking on the space age look.

Kitchen:

Over the past decade, the kitchen has become the heartbeat of the home, as more an more home owners create a social hub where food is cooked, families and friends congregate and work can also be achieved. Vicky Elmore of Elmore Kitchens gives us her interior trends for the kitchen of 2019: Bye Bye Kettle The boiling water tap is a kitchen trend that is here to stay. As desires for clutter free kitchens increase worktops increase, the Quooker boiling water tap is the perfect addition to any new kitchen. Saves time, water, energy and space, with the added benefit of filtered water removing the need for use of plastic bottles. Ceiling Extractors Bulky extractor fans can ruin the look of a supersleek, minimalist kitchen. For the ultimate in discreet extraction, ceiling hoods illuminates the cooking area whilst drawing the steam towards the ceiling. Kitchen Cabinets Matte door fronts are slick to the touch and much easier to keep clean. This attractive finish is not going to go out of fashion any time soon! Elegant Drama Bring some drama into the kitchen with black, carbon and anthracite colours adding a sense of elegance when mixed with white cabinets and worktops. Pendant Lights Make a statement with a conversation starting set of pendant lights as they’re perfect for adding ample lighting to wide open spaces.

Bathroom:

There are two distinctive styles taking shape for the bathroom of 2019. Firstly, the minimalist look. More and more residential bathroom designs are

66 inbath

Quooker boiling water tap taking a 'studio loft' feel. As with the industrial kitchen, there is an emphasis on creating space and keeping bathroom appliances simple but elegant. Free-standing sink units and baths, walk-in showers, clean lines and an open plan feel gives this style a small-scale living feel. Marble tiling for both wall and floor, combined with wooden furnishings, gives a dramatic contrast and the entwinement of the two materials creates clean and elegant decor composition. The second style entertains pure opulence. A Victorian-style of dark walls, grand architecture, show-stopping cast-iron roll-top baths with balland-claw feet, finished with chrome or rose-gold furnishings give a sense of grandieur. For a more dramatic look, how about introducing at least one show-stopping feature – dramatic floor times, a hugely ornate or a Renaissanceinspired setting. Victorian-style bathrooms

On the Move?

Will 2019 be the year you move home? Some of Bath's most respected property experts give their opinion on the local market, helping you make a more informed decision on your next move.

Good news for first-time buyers as house prices drop by 1.4% in November 2018 Not so good news for homeowners..... Britain's biggest mortgage lender, Halifax, have released data (November 2018) that suggests that UK house prices are rising at their slowest rate in six years. Carey Gilliland of Madison Oakley

How can you target the best time to sell? Once we’ve dealt with value and costs, the next most popular question we get from owners is “when is the best time to sell” so I thought it might be useful to share some of the following figures from Rightmove. Can you target specific times of the year for selling and, if so, why? If you analyse the pattern of customer views on Rightmove (graphs for 2017 and much of 2018 available on our blog) it seems pretty clear that there are several spikes in buyer activity on Rightmove – March, May, July and October. Assuming traffic on Rightmove is a decent general guide for when buyers are active, should you be looking to target these peak months when you’re selling? However, we mustn’t just look at the demand end of the scale without taking into account supply as well. Its all well and good if there are plenty of buyers around but what about if you’ve got loads of competition too? Rightmove also publishes data on the general flow of supply (properties coming onto the market) per agent. What we need to look for here is the low points of the trends – when you’re likely to have the least number of competing sellers in the market. January to March is again a target point but supply then rises across the summer until an autumn fall to a low point around Christmas (no surprise there!).

68 inbath

How long does it take to sell? Do you need to allow a bit of time in your target calculations? Analysing “average time to sell” stats shows offer activity speeds up as the New Year starts and then can slow down from early summer for the remainder of the year. Smashing this all together would suggest a target of sellers starting to market their property from late January into Feb for the following reasons; 1. Competition is at its lowest point of the year 2. Buyer activity is steadily rising towards a March peak 3. Time to sell is rapidly decreasing (buyers are buying) It may still be cold and dark plus the gardens look far from their best but don’t let this put you off. If you’re wanting to move in the New Year, the stats show you should start early!

The average house price in the UK now stands at £224,578, just a 0.3% increase on November 2017, with prices falling by 1.4 per cent on the previous month. Russell Galley, Halifax managing director stated: ‘High employment, wage growth and historically low mortgage rates continue to make home ownership more affordable for many, though the need to raise a significant deposit still acts as something of a restraint on the market,’ he added ‘This is largely offset by relatively limited supply of new and existing properties for sale, which continues to sustain house prices nationally,’ While there may be a seasonable aspect to the slowdown, the market is likely to be erratic moving into 2019 as uncertainty over a Brexit deal remains. While this is good news for first-time buyers, Halifax says raising a 'significant deposit still acts as something of a restraint on the market'. The data from the Halifax also shows that on a quarterly basis house prices fell by 1.1%. As for 2019 predictions, there seems to be a united belief that the market will continue to be subdued until the economic and political situation changes. The longer these factors linger, the more painful the road ahead may look. However, there is room for optimism, especially for new homes buyers, as house price come down in some areas, property becomes more affordable which consequently could boost the economy by increasing spending power and buying capacity.

40% of 18 – 24 year old unaware of shared ownership scheme

James Dredge of Knight Frank

A recent UK poll has found that potential home buyers, aged between 18 – 24 are the least aware of shared ownership as a way of helping people afford a home, despite being the group most likely to benefit from the scheme. The YouGov national research found that while three quarters of 18 – 24 year olds in the UK have heard of shared ownership, awareness is as low as 40%. Francine Watson of Knight Frank

Downsizing opens a new lease of life for Bath home buyers

As I reflect on the housing market in Bath during 2018 and the types of buyer that have graced our doorstep, one common theme is ‘downsizing’. With my focus on the new homes market, many of our buyers have been driven by lifestyle changes, often looking for a home that offers them some freedom from endless property management, high fuel costs and rooms that are surplus to requirements. For many this liberating move not only releases money to spend on the nicer things in life, but gives back the time to do them. And what better place than Bath to spend some quality time? Imagine living centrally in Bath, and not needing to use the car every day; or is that just my dream? As an example, one of our ‘must-have’ new homes for downsizers has been the release of One Tram Yard on Walcot Street; lovingly converted apartments by Neptune which has the stylish kitchen and furniture emporium below. Following high demand, and with only three left in Phase 1, prices start from £950,000 for a luxurious three bedroom apartment with allocated parking.

If a house is more to your taste, a little further along Walcot Street is Upper Yard by the prestigious developer Kersfield. Here we have an impressive collection of 8, three bedroom homes, many with various combinations of outside space in the form of gardens, terraces and balconies, centred around a communal courtyard with allocated parking below. The traditional look of

these houses is complemented by the modern & flexible accommodation, with underfloor heating and wood burning stoves. Prices here start from just £715,000.

We can all speculate on Brexit and what that really means for our economy; but should the question be, are you ready for a lifestyle change? And so the outlook for 2019? We can all speculate on Brexit and what that really means for our economy; but should the question be, are you ready for a lifestyle change?

Shared Ownership gives first time buyers and those that do not currently own a home the opportunity to purchase a share in a new build or resale property. The purchaser pays a mortgage on the share they own, and pays rent to a housing association on the remaining share. Because the purchaser only needs a mortgage for the share they are purchasing, the amount of money required for a deposit is a lot lower when compared to the amount that would be required when purchasing outright.

Shared Ownership gives first time buyers and those that do not currently own a home the opportunity to purchase a share in a new build or resale property. The purchaser has the option to increase his/ her share during their time in the property via a process known as ‘staircasing’, and in most cases can staircase all the way to 100%, thereby owning the property outright. shared ownership properties are always leasehold. Having first launched in the late 1970's, awareness was found to increase with age, with 83% of those age 55 and over, 79% of 45 of 54 year olds, 78% of 35 to 44 year olds and 70% of 25 to 34 year olds aware of the scheme. The survey reveals that once made aware of the correct definition of shared ownership, some 24% of 18 to 24 year olds said they would be ‘very likely’ or ‘fairly likely’ to use the initiative in the future, the highest among the age groups surveyed.

Are rental costs unaffordable for young adults in the South West? Marcus Arundell of HomeLets

More change is on its way

What are the prospects for Bath’s lettings market? With numerous changes on the horizon, Marcus Arundell of Homelets wonders whether the city’s housing could get even more expensive.

to this. Letting agencies will need to charge someone for the work they do, and that will become the landlord, and many landlords will want to cover that extra cost – and the only person who can cover it is the tenant.

Change and disruption have been a consistent theme over recent years and months – in politics, business and, it seems, life generally. That’s just as true in the lettings market. But what’s really significant is that the changes just keeping coming.

So: no fees is great for tenants. But higher rents isn’t.

Landlords don’t generally earn a great deal of public compassion, but the truth is that they have taken a battering in recent years. In fact it’s surprised many of us that more of them haven’t sold up and quit. Tax reliefs have gone down, stamp duty has gone up, and tighter new regulations have come into force. And there’s more on its way – three key regulatory changes in particular. A cap on tenants’ deposits. The cap isn’t fixed yet, but could amount to a limit of the equivalent of five weeks’ rent where the annual rent is less than £50,000, and six weeks’ rent over £50,000. Many landlords have got used to taking six weeks’ rent as a deposit, so this change will mean they have less of an insurance against serious damage. But it will make life easier for tenants. Three year tenancies. This will give tenants longer term security, but make it harder for landlords to swiftly remove a difficult tenant. A ban on tenants’ fees. This is a big change, as tenants currently pay substantial fees to landlords or lettings agencies for various tasks like carrying out an inventory or checking up on references – or just finding them a property. This work costs money, so someone will have to pay for it. The upshot of these three changes? Most probably higher rents. In the case of the ban on tenants’ fees, it’s hard to see how it won’t lead

70 inbath

How will this play out in Bath? Even here, change is a constant. Bath is evolving, and quite dramatically. New developments continue to emerge onto the skyline. New shops and restaurants continue to open. And new arrivals continue to arrive, particularly from London, bringing their London money with them. As a result, rents, like house prices, have risen faster here than the UK average. That trend probably wouldn’t have changed even in the absence of the regulatory changes. But with the regulatory changes, the pressure for rent rises has gone up a couple of notches. However… in times of uncertainty, with economic clouds on the horizon, rapid increases in rents may look reckless. So, although I expect to see considerable rises, I think they will be tempered by a general air of caution. Landlords can, after all, remind themselves that the value of their property has gone up, and many will ruefully swallow many of their extra costs. But let’s remind ourselves. The only thing we can be sure about is that things won’t stay the same. homeletsbath.co.uk

Recent reaserch from the BBC has concluded that for two-thirds of 22 - 29 year olds, across Britain, are paying in excess of 30% of their income on renting a property. According to many housing organisations, spending more than a third of income on rent is unaffordable. Figures collated for the South West region shows that the average 22 - 29 year old will spend 34% of their income on a one-bedroom home. According to House of Commons Library research, renting has more than doubled over the last 20 years, and 65% of 16-24 year olds and 42% of 25-34 year olds now rent privately.

According to many housing organisations, spending more than a third of income on rent as unaffordable. The BBC data also shows that a gross annual income of £ 24,800 would be needed in order to rent a one-bedroom home across England, without going above the 30% ceiling. In 1980, the average percentage of income spent on renting was just 10%, although many of these proeprties were rented from local councils or housing associations, rather than through a private landlord. Cost of renting in Plymouth: Figures relating to Plymouth show that both percentage of wages spent on renting, within the same criteria, are slightly lower at 33% (compared to 34%). This equates to an average of £ 546 per month being spent on rent for a one-bedroom home. For the same age group (22 - 29) renting a two-bedroom home, the average percentage rises to 38% and £ 633 per month being spent suggesting that sharing may offer an option for younger renters. However, when we look at all age groups renting a 4 bed home in the city, the average income percentage rises to 50% and £ 891 per month. Although this may seem high, as a region this figure is a staggering 75% and £ 1,350 per month outlay on average.

‘New Year’s resolutions’ Being inquisitive about how much (or how little) young people know about borrowing and money, I forced a conversation the other night with my daughters about their finances and their student loans. Rather disappointingly, I quickly realised that they did not fully understand what they have got themselves into. They certainly did not understand how the mechanism of compound interest would negatively impact on how much they will potentially have to repay to the government over future years.

Kevin Gray

CEO, Bath Building Society At a recent meeting, I enquired as to what was the main reason for our underwriters turning down applications for our mortgages. The response was slightly shocking (to me at least) and more than a bit worrying. Undeclared, unsecured credit was the answer that I got. When our underwriters inform applicants that they have not declared all of their credit cards, they repeatedly get comments along the lines of “oh….but that one is interest free so I didn’t think it was necessary to declare it”. It is clear that many do not understand that ‘free credit’ still has to be repaid one day and that responsible lenders have to take all current credit into consideration as part of the normal loan application process.

When Tony Blair was asked, ‘what are your top three priorities as Prime Minister?’, he responded ‘education, education and education’. It’s fair to say that he probably wasn’t thinking about financial education at the time, but Blair fully understood how education can have a transformative effect on society. Bath Building Society considers itself to have a moral responsibility to educate the young about business and finance. As we move into 2019, the Society has resolved to do something to help young people to better understand how business works, and more importantly, how personal finances need to be operated. Hopefully we will be able to help avoid future Mr Micawber ‘misery’ type situations from occurring. In 2018, the Society has sponsored a team from Bath College to participate in the Young Enterprise (YE) scheme. This fantastic programme encourages young people to start and to run small businesses. YE will be familiar to many as it has been running for decades. Rather depressingly, and most probably due to very stretched school budgets in this age of austerity, none of the state schools in Bath

participated in the scheme in 2018. Our Society is aiming to support a minimum of four Bath state schools in 2019 to participate in YE and we have the aspiration to do more in future years. Hopefully a new generation of Bath entrepreneurs will be created! In 2019, the Society is also sponsoring a series of financial education seminars to be held in Bath state schools that have sixth forms. The aim is to improve pupils’ understanding of how personal finances should ideally be operated. As we enter 2019, I personally resolve to do all the usual things like drink less wine, exercise more, go to bed earlier etc. I am however going to be more aspirational in this New Year. I will be aiming to manage my own finances that little bit better and to perhaps put a bit more aside into the Kevin Gray rainy day fund. Maybe you might also be thinking of doing the same? If you are, then our Customer Support Department will be only too willing to give you advice as to what we could potentially do for you. Give them a call on 01225 423271. On behalf of Bath Building Society, I would like to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year. I especially hope that our YE teams have great success with their small business ventures!

parking. I have the convenience of living so close to the city centre but not actually in it - where tourist buses can sometimes be quite invasive!" “It’s an excellent lifestyle choice as the whole Riverside development - and especially Royal View - provides an ideal situation. It is quiet both in the building and around the development, which is unusual for city living. It has great access to the river which is ideal for me as I run and cycle.” Ticking all the boxes for the modern professional, Bath Riverside is also a canny investment in uncertain times." Dr Bellamy went on: “The apartment is for now a great place to live but I also expect it to be a good investment. I expect the value to increase well as the development continues and it also is in a situation where it is a very desirable site to rent. “I have to recommend the staff in the sales office who were extremely helpful and understanding throughout the move.” And with further commercial businesses due to follow Coffee #1’s example in the ground floors of the iconic buildings, Dr Bellamy is looking forward to a full range of services and facilities on his doorstep. “It will be good when the park is completed as that will be a great space to hang out in in the good weather. “It has always been understood that there will be a restaurant in the basement unit of Royal View. Depending on what it is that would be a great addition to the site as the coffee shop has been. I understand that there will also be a gym in Sovereign Point which would be great.” Dr Bellamy concluded: “All in all Royal View has been a great place to live so I had no hesitation at making the transition from renting to owning a property here.”

Work, rest and play lifestyle? Bath Riverside pulls out all the stops Commercial businesses coming on stream including a café, restaurant and gym will provide the icing on the cake for lifestyle buyers at Crest Nicholson’s Bath Riverside development. That’s according to the latest residents at the Royal View apartment building overlooking the historic Victoria Bridge, who say lifestyle choices are a major factor when looking for a new home here. It was certainly the case for Bath medical professional Dr Ian Bellamy, principal dentist and practice owner at Aquae Sulis Dental, who moved in to Royal View in 2017.

Marcus Evans, sales and marketing director from developer Crest Nicholson echoed the advantages of the Bath Riverside lifestyle: “Many professionals and couples enjoy significantly different lifestyles than they did ten or twenty years ago. Professional people looking to unlock a new way of living tend towards style and convenience over space. When I started in the business every house buyer wanted a big garden just like their parents and grandparents. A garden was often regarded as a bit of a status symbol back then but these days people simply don’t have the time – or inclination - to maintain them properly.” Offering modern, flexible living spaces, open parks, landscaped courtyards and views like nothing else in the city, people wanting to change their

He said: “Initially I rented an apartment on the second floor. In September I managed to buy one of the larger apartments also in Royal View.” Originally from Northamptonshire, Dr Bellamy said: “It was important to me to find a modern building where there was little in the way of maintenance. I had come from an old house with a large garden and this didn’t fit my lifestyle. Riverside is a perfect location, I can walk to work and more crucially can walk into Bath where I can enjoy all that the city has to offer without the hassle of
