Since being crowned MasterChef champion in 2014, it has been a busy couple of years for Bath's Ping Coombes. She has returned to MasterChef as a guest judge and has become a global ambassador for Malaysian food.
The Summer holidays: love them or loathe them they can create memories that both children and parents will look back on with fondness; making what many consider to be the most stressful 7 weeks of the year, into one of the most fulfilling.
This issues property feature talks to some of Bath's most respected names as we take a look at the local property market.
Now, Ping shares her love for Malaysian cuisine with her first book 'Malaysia'. We caught up with Ping to find out what we can expect and how the past two years have gone.
Here are just some of the many museums, galleries and attractions offering up events, exhibitions and family fun which will make this year one to remember.

what's on the Outstanding Service Industries Apprentice of the Year. Judges choosing the final award winner were looking for evidence of apprenticeship growth, as well as a commitment to building relationships with businesses. They were interested in how training providers encourage individual apprenticeship development and celebrate the achievement of apprentices.
Bath College: Apprenticeship Training Provider of the Year
Bath College is celebrating after being named as the best apprenticeship training provider in Bath and Bristol at an awards ceremony.
The college was chosen as Apprenticeship Training Provider of the Year at the Bristol Post and Bath Chronicle Apprenticeship Awards 2016. Bath College works with over 260 businesses, who employ over 450 apprentices, making it the largest provider of apprenticeships in the Bath and North East Somerset area. Over the last year, the college’s apprenticeship team has increased its provision, working with over 60 companies to offer apprenticeship programmes in nine new business areas.
Barney Willis, Head of Department for Services to Business, said: “It’s the third time in the last four years that we have won this, which is a fantastic achievement. “It’s a great reward for all the staff because we put a huge amount of work into the apprenticeship programme and we’re thankful that this has been recognised outside the college, adding credibility to the work we have done.” Bath College was nominated for Training Provider of the Year alongside South Gloucestershire and Stroud College and Weston College. Apprentice Kyna Wyatt, from Bath College, was also nominated as a finalist for
Mr Willis said: “We focused on how we help the small employers. A lot of organisations tend to move toward to the large employers because of the benefits this brings, but we have 173 small employers on our apprenticeship programme. “That’s only right because if you look at apprenticeships statistically 85 per cent of apprenticeships are with small employers, it’s clear that without their involvement we wouldn’t get as many apprentices trained in industry. “That’s probably one of the reasons we won the award. We also focused on how we have increased our apprenticeship provision. Following the merger with Norton Radstock College we have been able to look at different areas and it’s widened our appeal. “Our strategy this year has been to continue to align our offer to the LEP identified priority sectors so that we’re truly helping those sectors that are experiencing difficulties in recruitment and skills and meeting the needs of those employers.” To find out about more about how apprenticeships could help your business call: 01225 328 720, visit www.bathcollege.ac.uk, or email: apprenticeships@bathcollege.ac.uk • 1688 - 1754 - the entry ‘slips’ to the bath are widened to take a Sedan chair. • 1797 The Cross Bath is enlarged by Palmer and ‘turned around’ to face newly built Bath Street. • 1885 - Major Davis enlarges the bath creating the ‘Tuppeny Hot’. • 1974 - the Cross Bath is closed for bathing. • 1991 to 1998 - The Springs Foundation opens the Cross Bath but bathing is not permitted. • 2000 - The World Wildlife Fund for Nature declares the Cross Spring one of the World’s Sacred Sites. • 2006 - Thermae Bath Spa opens and the Cross Bath is once again available for bathing continuing an ancient tradition.
The Cross Bath If you stand by the UNESCO World Heritage Site symbol on Stall Street, you can see the colonnades of Bath Street leading down to the beautiful Cross Bath, one of the four thermal baths which comprise Thermae Bath Spa. The Grade 1 Listed Cross Bath sits above one of Bath’s three natural hot springs – the only hot, mineral-rich springs in the United Kingdom. Ever since the waters were first discovered by the legendary Prince Bladud in 863BC, the Cross Bath has had a colourful history including: • 43 to c.400 AD - during the Roman occupation, the springs are re-dedicated to ‘Sulis Minerva’ and Bath becomes known as Aquae Sulis. A Roman reservoir and altar still survive below the present bath in the Cross Bath.

• 11 & 12th centuries - a medieval bath is constructed. St. John’s Hospital is founded in 1174 immediately next to The Cross Bath. It is still there today. • 1687 - during the visit of King James II, his wife, Mary of Modena bathes at the Cross Bath hoping to solve the problem of infertility. The treatment is successful. To celebrate an heir to the throne, the Melfort Cross is erected in the middle of the Cross Bath pool.
Today, individuals are welcome to use the Cross Bath, which can also be hired out exclusively for small parties. For details and bookings, please see: www.ThermaeBathSpa.com During the first week of August, Thermae Bath Spa is celebrating its tenth anniversary. On Thursday 4th August, visitors will be able to view the Cross Bath and bathe in the water free of charge.

glaze and green onion. Or go for a real classic and try the Tako Sushi, poached octopus served on sushi rice - simple and sublime.
Côte Brasserie offers al fresco dining a tempting seasonal menu. There is always something new to try like Crab Mayonnaise, with avocado, cucumber, capers and tarragon with toasted sourdough bread or a sharp and delicious lemon tart. A classic Tuna Niçoise is always popular as you bask in the sun in the Cote courtyard, served with a chilled glass of rose, it’s like being transported to the French Riviera.
Burger & Lobster sought out what is undoubtedly the most stunning and historic restaurant location in the city. Set is the magnificent Octagon, a Georgian chapel in a former life, they have created a “WOW” space with a menu to match. The catch is there is no menu, it is quite simply burger or lobster. The juicy burgers are made from corn fed beef from Nebraska and lobsters are flown in from Nova Scotia in Canada and kept alive in huge tanks to make sure they are fresh and succulent. If you want to visit without eating, the cocktail bar is the place to be seen - or go underground to discover the Confessional. Vaults are a feature of many 18th Century buildings but few have been so beautifully restored as the Confessional. These subterranean spaces were originally used to store wine so the perfect place to sample some fine wines or work through the cocktail list.

Ping Coombes
Shooed out of the kitchen by her mum as a child, Ping Coombes only began cooking when she came to the UK for university, and she applied to go on MasterChef just after being made redundant. Crowned champion in 2014, Ping has returned to MasterChef as a guest judge and has become a global ambassador for Malaysian food – she has even addressed the World Economic Forum at Davos. Ping took time out from her busy schedule to talk to InBath's Craig Maplesden, about a whirlwind couple of years, her love of Malaysian cuisine and how she has learnt from her first cooking experience.
No, the last two years have flown by and we've had two more winners since then! I know its been a manic 2 years for you and your family. What have been the highlights? The places I have been and the different people I have met, not to mention the endless opportunities! It is constant but won't change it for the world. Tell us a little about your first book 'Malaysia', which has just been released. I love Malaysian food particularly the food I grown up with. The idea didn't come immediately but I realised there isn't a Malaysian cookbook in the UK so I approached a book agent I got introduced to and presented my idea. They loved it and it kind of went from there. The publishers told me that in 25 years she was a publisher she never seen a Malaysian proposal but that year she had 3! I knew then I had to bring one out as Malaysian food is going to be huge!
You say that food has the power to create and evoke memories. What were your first memories of food/cooking? Haha, my first one of cooking wasn't too rosy I'm afraid. I made chicken wrapped in bacon for my flat mate once and it was raw! But I have plenty of amazing memories from my childhood like the smell of braising pork always reminds me of my mornings when my mum used to prepare lunch before going to work. Are there any particular recipes in the book that hold great memories for you? The whole book is based on food memories so all of them. The stories were sometimes so long that it leaves no space for recipes! Is Malaysian food as much about family and sharing than it is about texture, taste and smell?
Ethiopian food is delicious and Berlin is a cool city for food! What would be your food heaven and food hell? Food heaven - One of my mum's slow cooked broths. Food hell- Summer Pudding Finally, It's already been a busy year but what do you have in store for the rest of 2016? I'm working with Bath Spa University on their weddings and Conferance package for 2017! I'm traveling a lot and will be doing a lot of food festivals all around the country, oh and lots of cookery classes too.
I think Malaysian food is like the perfect man! Looks and smells tantalising and it hugs you like a warm blanket leaving you wanting more!
The book celebrates the exquisite food, colours and flavours of Malaysia. What dishes can we expect to see?
Your pantry at home is legendary. Tell just about the different ingredients, herbs and spices that are in the cupboard under the stairs. Are these available in most supermarkets?
Some Malaysian staples like Satay with proper peanut sauce, Rendang and Chicken Curry but there are recipes like Hakka Mee which is my mums secret recipe, my Hanainese Chicken which is a popular dish that fuses eastern and western flavours and modern interpretation of popular desserts like coconut and pandan pannacotta (one I made on MasterChef).
Haha they are my precious collection! I have dried scallops, dried anchovies and shrimps, different kind of mushrooms, variety of sauces and pastes, God knows how many variety of salt... I can go on! Yes they are all available in most supermarkets apart from some speciality I collected from my travels!

Food and Drink Book Releases
Food and Wine Tour of Catalonia: part two Onward a few kilometres to Peralada home to a winery I knew as a noted Cava producer. We were ushered into the Hotel Peralada a very sumptuous place sporting a conference centre, Hotel, Spa, Golf Course and lovely classical restaurant.

This was a fine retreat spilling over with old world charm and style. Which came first, the farmer or the chef? Richard Buckley of Acorn Vegetarian Kitchen
There are few books that change the course of your life. Even fewer only seem to make absolute sense long after you’ve closed the final page. Several months ago I finished reading the 3rd Plate by American chef Dan Barber, his polemic on the importance of local food and the primacy of the farmer and produce before the skill of the chef. That was nice I thought, as I quietly congratulated myself on how much local and artisan produce we use in the restaurant and promptly forgot all about it. It wasn’t until I was working on the menu for our new farm shop at Castle Farm in Midford that I had my “ah ha” moment.
herbs and realised that it was those vegetables that made the menu, not my ideas. Rather than bring ideas to the field and try to find produce to fit them, truly local cooking means going to field and cooking what you pick. I realised that this is what traditional cooking has always done. The great foods of the world, Italian, French farmhouse, Indian – they didn’t have international wholesalers or local supermarkets – they picked what was available in their fields and gardens and flavoured it from the same fields. They used the traditions of their grandmothers to produce delicious foods.
The great foods of the world, Italian, French farmhouse, Indian – they didn’t have international wholesalers or local supermarkets – they picked what was available in their fields and gardens and flavoured it from the same fields. As a chef you work closely with the produce, you handle it every day, you have to know your varieties of potato and how they behave. You may visit the farms and producers occasionally to look at the crops and see what is coming up next but you rarely, truly engage with the produce the way a farmer does. Choosing the varieties that are right for the land, watching the weather and the seasons, choosing your moment for harvest. A chef looks for the variety that will work best in their dish, if a local farmer can provide it, fantastic, if they can’t, oh well, we’ll have to look elsewhere. It was whilst I was trying to design the menu for the farm shop that everything Dan Barber had been talking about clicked into place. I looked out across the beds of beetroots, carrots and

They didn’t wonder whether they wanted Indian or Thai for dinner that night or wander round the supermarket deciding between asparagus from 3 different continents. To be truly local again, to cook well, like those who invented the cuisines we create pale imitations of today we need to let the produce lead the way, to respond with skill and sensitivity to what the land around us produces. I finally understood what Dan Barber was talking about – The farmer and the fields need to lead our food choices, not clever chefs or exotic dreams. Castle Farm Café opens it’s doors on 6th July 2016, serving local, simple food, cooked from the land.

Indulgence: Daily Delights of Georgian Bath now - 11 December 2016 An exhibition capturing daily life in Georgian England, in all its glorious excesses!
This summer at Lacock Abbey… The Hollow Crown at Lacock Abbey 6 June – 4 September, 11am – 5pm
An exhibition of costumes from the hit BBC Two series, ‘The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses’, including those worn by stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Keeley Hawes and Sophie Okonedo. In November 2014, BBC Two returned to Lacock Abbey for the filming of the concluding part in their series ‘The Hollow Crown’, based on Shakespeare’s history plays. Many of the scenes were filmed around the abbey’s iconic medieval cloister, which dates back to around 1450, including a tennis scene on the cloister garth. No stranger to the screen, the abbey cloister has previously appeared in a variety of film and television productions including, ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, ‘Wolf Hall’ and ‘The Other Boleyn Girl’, while the village - also National Trust - has been used for the filming of ‘Pride and Prejudice’, ‘Cranford’ and ‘Downton Abbey’ (to name a few). Sonia Shomalzadeh, Assistant House Steward at Lacock, said, ‘It’s always amazing to see the abbey and village transformed during filming. The attention to detail with the costumes and props is incredible.’ The costumes from ‘The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses’ are on display in the Great Hall of the abbey until 4 September, 11am – 5pm, last entry 4.15pm. Normal admission applies, National Trust members and under 5s go free.

Georgian visitors to Bath enjoyed life to the full: the pleasures of eating, dancing, gambling and flirting and other leisure pursuits were keenly pursued. Bath was a place of glorious excess as well as glorious architecture and this exhibition explores the range of amusements Bath had to offer, using Thomas Rowlandson’s famous satirical etchings ‘The Comforts of Bath’ (1798) as inspiration. Rarely seen objects will illuminate the often expensive and sometimes decadent pastimes, such as dinners with twenty different dishes and card games where £10,000 could be lost in one sitting. New illustrations by the renowned cartoonist Adrian Teal will also be on display to show a humorous link between Bath’s 18th century pleasures and those of contemporary visitors Design a plate or table centrepiece 12 August Be inspired by Wedgwood and Derby to design your own paper plate or have fun constructing a magnificent centrepiece. Find out about extravagant 18th century dining room table displays and hear stories of those indulging to excess! Design a minature patch or snuff box 19 August Drop-in and design an 18th century style miniature box which would have held a lady’s face patches or a gentleman’s snuff. Try using a quill and ink to write a love poem or a challenge to a duel and then seal it with wax. Leave having discovered more about the adventures of some Georgian visitors to Bath.

In South America the employment of idols reflects a complicated society where they are relied upon in times of helplessness. The vulnerable seek aid, reassurance and comfort, while the guilty seek validation and redemption. The sculptures on display here reflect this never-ending dialogue between the material and the spiritual, embodied in a range of characters who act as mediators between the two worlds. Some are well known, some more personal.
The Roman Baths shop The shop is open until 9.45pm for a wide range of books and gifts.

This retrospective marks the centenary of the birth of Kenneth Armitage (1916-2002), who was Head of Sculpture at Bath Academy of Art. On moving to the area he aspired to carve in Bath stone, however on seeing Brunel’s engineering achievements he decided to work in metal. He became one of the new generation of sculptors whose work responded to the anxieties of the arms race and the Cold War; at the 1952 Venice Biennale they were famously dubbed the ‘Geometry of Fear’ school. But Armitage never lost his sense of wonder at living things and their underlying structures, as is evident from the bronzes, plaster maquettes and drawings in this exhibition.

The show will be re-creating some famous Bloomsbury rooms with works by Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and Roger Fry – three of the most well-known artist of this era. Recognising that the only Bloomsbury Group decorative schemes to survive are at Charleston in East Sussex, this exhibition aims to recreate, as far as possible, several of the lost interiors on which Roger Fry, Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant worked in the fi rst half of the 20th century. This exhibition reunites objects and paintings from private and public collections that have not been seen together for over 50 years.

property The housing market has seen a huge amount of change over the past few years, whether you are a first-time buyer, down-sizer, renter or landlord. With the referendum now settled, what can we expect from the local property market. We ask some local experts for their thoughts.
Carey Gilliland Madison Oakley With intermittent flashes of warmth recently, it would seem we might even get a bit of summer this year and the Bath property market has certainly stayed true to form on seasonal trends if our research into market figures is any judge. We have just released our May statistics report on our blog, with the usual comparisons included to our previous two months stats and several themes are worth highlighting as worthy of attention. Supply levels are rising as the weather warms up – I’m sure many buyers would feel this is not before time – and the last month has seen between 17% and 24% increase in total stock available.
David Mackenzie Carter Jonas 2016 is going to be an important year for the Bath housing market, whilst we find our feet from the impact of the referendum and the changes to stamp duty land tax. It is also an important year for Carter Jonas, celebrating our 5th anniversary in the city. Whilst numerous obstacles impede the property sector, Bath continues to go from strength to strength, drawing in a wide audience from all corners of the globe.
The year has started strongly, but as it continues, we will see that buyers’ criteria will become very specific in terms of size and location and we are already seeing buyers becoming more sensitive to pricing. In fact, we have seen one or two excellent properties become stale on the market because of being priced too high and left on the market for too long. Where pricing is correct, properties will continue to perform very well indeed. An example of this happened recently when we brought a beautiful property to the market at a sensible level.
Whilst numerous obstacles impede the property sector, Bath continues to go from strength to strength, drawing in a wide audience from all corners of the globe. The long term confidence in the city is seen continually, and wherever you look investment flows into all aspects of Bath. Large scale development companies are confident to be building the most new homes the city has seen in fifty years. The retail and leisure sectors have had recent investment from high profile corporate companies and pension funds. We have the first casino coming to the city, and The Gainsborough - a 5* Malaysian backed hotel and Spa has opened and is trading well.
Three weeks later it went to best and final offers, achieving considerably in excess of the guide price and going into a contracts race with two parties, getting the very best result possible for our clients, which is all we set out to do.
The electrification of the railway from 2017 will benefit Bath significantly, boosting the city not only as a tourist destination, but also as a commuter hub. A direct impact of this has and will continue to be seen in the city’s housing, retail, restaurant and hotel sectors, increasingly drawing interest from London centric investors, businesses and families. The tourist trade has recently seen Bath enter the top 10 UK destinations for visitor numbers.
Supported by a national network of 36 offices and 700 property professionals, our residential sales team are renowned for their quality of service, expertise, and the simply better advice they offer their clients.

Carter Jonas LLP is a leading UK property consultancy working across residential sales and letting, commercial property, rural land and business, planning, development, new homes and national infrastructure.
The market has however increased in pace at the same time. Average time on market has dropped by between 1% and 4% whilst there has been a 31% average decrease in mean selling times across price brackets. Lastly, the type of properties on the market has adjusted for the season (less flats by 2% and less terraced homes by 5% but more semis and detached). It would seem any Brexit fears have not affected the Bath market at present. I would suspect the incredibly low supply levels we have endured for many months mean that even a small increase in stock now is nowhere near enough to meet the pent up demand and we have certainly noticed a continuation in competitive offer scenarios. However, from tracking numbers of price reductions made over the last 6 months in Bath, overvaluing remains a key issue for owners to watch out for. Lastly, four quick tips below to use when you’re choosing agents this Summer; Check their Rightmove listings – not just for suitability for your property but also their general standard of presentation, photography, whether they overvalue/reduce prices a lot, how long their properties are on the market, what proportion of their stock is sold etc. Google just their company name – look for a summary of their activity & overall web presence. Find independent reviews – you might see some reviews come up in the results when you do tip 2. If not, go to Allagents.co.uk – it’s basically Tripadvisor for the property industry. Look at their window – would you be happy to see your property there? Walk into their office. How you are treated may be how your potential buyers are treated.

Dan Jones Whiteley Helyar As anticipated from the success experienced in 2015, Spring 2016 has seen a hugely buoyant and busy market in Bath for Whiteley Helyar, with a record number of sales being agreed in both February and March compared to that of the last five years.
MoD sites transformed
On the Ensleigh site on Lansdown 240 new homes are due to be built, and on the Warminster Road developers wish to build just over 200 more. But the largest former MoD site in Bath is Foxhill near Combe Down. The plans are for up to 700 new homes, plus a school and community facilities. There’s even talk of cable cars into the city centre… Exciting!
The early part of the year saw the stamp duty tax rise for second home purchasers, with these buyers having to pay an additional 3% tax on the purchase price of a property, as well as the standard stamp duty which would be calculated in the usual way. This cast a degree of uncertainty over the Buy To Let/second home sector of the market, with many people expecting the prices of some central apartments and small houses to decrease (these being the more obvious and common properties bought by Buy To Let/second home buyers). The possibility was that the Vendors of these types of properties might have ended up absorbing the further expense that the purchasers would incur, in the form of accepting lower offers on their properties to try to encourage these investors/second home buyers to continue to commit to buying. We are delighted to report that we have witnessed no such change to this sector of the market after this stamp duty tax increase has taken effect, and the number of Buy To Let/second homes that are being sold has not dwindled, with prices continuing to remain high. Our most recent successful example of this occurred on the sale of a spacious one bedroom apartment that we were selling at the bottom of the highly popular Bathwick Hill. We received a total of 14 bids on this apartment within two weeks of marketing, 11 of which were made by Buy To Let investor/second home purchasers. With prices in the city centre, Widcombe and Bathwick generally continuing to rise, we can only expect a further influx of purchasers coming to Bath over the next couple of years in anticipation of the completed electrified rail line, casino, and major new homes developments in Lansdown and Combe Down to be completed. The introduction of so many affordable new homes coupled with further amenities on the old MOD Fox Hill site in Combe Down will be a welcomed sight to many aspiring to secure a step onto the property ladder in Bath. With so many different parts of the city now out of financial reach of first time buyers and first time sellers who are trying to upsize and make that leap to the next rung, the question is how long will this ‘property boom’ continue for, with the apparent slowing of the London market.

Marcus Arundell HomeLets Our World Heritage treasures may be eternal, but the city around them is evolving faster than it has for decades. HomeLets, one of Bath’s leading lettings agencies, shares its view of what’s to come.
People are already living in this substantial multi-phase development along the south side of the river. It’s a whole new residential zone right next to the city centre which will eventually include around 3,000 homes, three parks, a primary school and commercial spaces. A development of this scale will change the shape and proportions of Bath, and at HomeLets we’re excited to be involved in the letting and management of a variety of different units. Indeed, we’re seeing a strong lettings market generally. Summer is usually a busy time, with many tenants moving in, others moving out and students changing accommodation. But there’s no doubt we’re seeing increased levels of demand – all part of a flourishing local economy and a bustling, expanding city.
Summer is usually a busy time, with many tenants moving in, others moving out and students changing accommodation. But there’s no doubt we’re seeing increased levels of demand – all part of a flourishing local economy and a bustling, expanding city. Bath’s Roman antiquities have seen a fair few changes since they were first constructed nearly 2,000 years ago. They’ve seen invasions from Anglo-Saxons, Danes, and finally the Normans. They’ve witnessed a messy medieval town transform itself into one of the wonders of the world, a Georgian city of unsurpassed elegance and spender. But the changes didn’t stop then, and they haven’t stopped now. In particular, three major developments will change Bath in powerful ways.
Here at HomeLets we have instigated our own set of changes. We have refreshed our brand and are excited to be launching this over the coming months. The truth is, even in a city as delightful as Bath, change has to take place or stagnation will ensue. Right now, the city’s housing stock is being infused with new life, just at a time when we need capacity most. These are certainly interesting times for the city and its residents.
London’s getting closer
As soon as next year, Paddington station will be around an hour from Bath Spa. Many people already commute, but you can be sure that many more will join them and once Crossrail is opened, it will be amazingly quick to get across London. We anticipate more people will want to move to Bath – bringing knock-on effects (higher rents and house prices, anyone?).
