Dining out under the stars
STARRING MATTHEW KELLY
Bergamo, in Northern Italy lies a stones throw from Lake Iseo, in the foothills of The Alps, just 25 miles north of Milan. Famed for its Taleggio cheese and Pellegrino water, the city's narrow cobbled streets, medieval architecture, worldfamous art galleries and traditional restaurants that serve fresh, rustic, country food have wowed locals and visitors for centuries.
Located between The Circus and The Royal Crescent lies the charming Margarets Buildings. Home to a cluster of independent retailers, a clutch of galleries and of course Franco and Darix's 'Rustico Bistro Italiano'. Celebrating its 5th anniversary in June, the Bergamasco brothers ethos is to honour the simplicity of classic Italian cooking while championing locally sourced produce to create a unique dining experience.
What are your earliest memories of food and when did your passion for cooking first begin?
at the Theatre Royal Bath
Having spent their childhood growing up in the country side village, it is easy to understand why Franco and Darix Cinesi have had a lifelong love affair with simple, traditional, Italian cooking. The bountiful produce on offer in the region such as casonsei, polenta, porcini mushrooms and gorgonzola demands simplicity and freshness – classically Italian.
An ideal location for the Summer, the rustic charm of the bistro offers a chance to cool off after a hard days retail therapy or Al fresco dining where you can dine out under the stars while watching the world go by.
Celebrating its 5th anniversary in June, the Bergamasco brothers ethos is to honour the simplicity of classic Italian cooking, while championing locally sourced produce to create a unique dining experience. With a thirst to develop their knowledge of food, the brothers left Bergamo, honing their culinary skills in kitchens across the world in places such as Bermuda, France, Cayman Islands and England. Having visited Bath on a number of occasions, to visit friends, Franco and Darix decided to bring a piece of Bergamo to a city with rich history, world famous architecture, cobbled streets and outstanding galleries – sound familiar.
Here we speak to new Head Chef Gianluca Zattini about his career, passion for food and what the bistro has in store this summer. For anyone who has yet to dine at Rustico Bistro, what can they expect? They can expect traditional and genuine Italian food from ancient recipes , some revisited ones and some improvised ones.
I grew up in a kitchen, my father is a great old school chef as my grand mother used to be. My uncle as well had a restaurant which involved other family members. I started to cook and help in the kitchen when i was 4 years old. Who has been the biggest influence in your career? Definitely my father, the way he cooks traditional food is amazing and his special skill is to work the meat (any kind from roasts to steaks , braised , boiled) : he has a gift. How would you sum up your style of cooking? This is not an easy question. Let's say that i was formed in a traditional way and cannot tolerate to change something from an original recipe but at the same time in my own creations i love to combine surprising ingredients so i'd say i am eclectic. What has been the highlight of your career so far? When I left Bermuda in 2002 to open my own restaurant in Italy. It was a dream come true and was fantastic, people travelled a long way to come and eat there. I was very close to get a star but a series of events lead to the closing of the restaurant. What would be your idea of 'food heaven'?

Richard Bean’s funny and moving play, Toast, tours to Bath from Monday 7th to Saturday 12th March after receiving huge critical acclaim in London in 2014 and prior to a New York engagement, where it will open the prestigious ‘Brits off Broadway’ 2016 season. This brilliantly observed drama stars Olivier Award-winning Matthew Kelly, whose television credits include Bleak House, Cold Blood and Benidorm, and Simon Greenall, well-known for his role in I’m Alan Partridge. Another Sunday night shift. The smell of bread baking. The industrial thump, thump, thump of the machines that never stop. The ovens are cranked up to full blast, the factory is humming, and everyone wants to
be somewhere else. But this shift is going to be different. Because when a crisis hits the factory, the men have more to lose than just their wages... First performed in 1999, Toast is by Richard Bean, who went on to write the huge West End hit One Man, Two Guvnors, the National Theatre commission Great Britain, and the book for the musical Made in Dagenham. The internationally renowned Iford Arts Festival entices some of the best musicians and opera to enchanted gardens of Iford Manor, 6 miles outside of Bath. Jess Robinson
Making a good impression Hi Jess, many thanks for taking time out from your busy schedule to speak to us. You are performing at this years Bath Comedy Festival, which you are no stranger to. What makes you keep coming back to the festival? Hello - no problem! I think this will be my third time at the comedy festival. What keeps me coming back? Bath does. I ADORE the city; it's architecture, its shops, it's afternoon teas!! I worked at the Theatre Royal a couple of times when I was on tour. I'll make any excuse to visit. Plus the audiences are never anything less than warm and laughy, which I love. What can we expect from this years show? More vocal gymnastics and lots of laughs; musical mash-ups, a magical musical hair machine, stand up and silliness. You might also catch a bit of tap dancing if you're lucky PLUS The Wheels of Sixty-Four Tunes are back as is my lovely pal and musical maestro extraordinaire - Kirsty Newton. The opening number alone has 50 vocal impressions in it which don't get repeated again during the show. Your impressions are brilliant, my personal favourite of yours is Cheryl Cole (when I hear it, I can't believe its not her). Are you allowed a favourite and is there an impression that you just can't get right? Why, thank you very much! You're definitely allowed favourite impressions (they're not like children)! I love doing Cheryl Cole - I find her quite easy and I love the reaction I get. I think one of my favourite singing impressions is Billie Holiday. She has such a distinctive, classic voice. As for the ones I struggle with - Nina Simone. I just can not get her tone. And men. I can not do men. Watching me try is funny though. How long does it take to perfect your impressions?
For full listings and details on how to book tickets please go to the website www.bathcomedy.com
It really depends on the subject and how long I'm prepared to persevere - (one of my worst personality traits is not liking something if I can't do it straight away). Some voices capture my imagination and come really easily. I got Kate
15
Bush straight away and Julie Andrews didn't take too long. Shirley Bassey was harder work. I don't think I really got her right for a year. Now she's one of my best. Can you teach someone to do an impression? Definitely. You may have witnessed me teaching a poor unsuspecting audience member to do a pretty good Liza Minelli last year. It's best to start with a caricature of someone, really exaggerating their voice qualities and mannerisms. They you can tone it down... if you remember... which sometimes I don't! Away from comedy, you were excellent in 'Little Voice', can we see you back on stage soon? Thank you very much. I really loved that role and it was amazing to be picked to play it by Jim Cartwright himself. I don't have any plans to go back on stage in the next year, well - apart from developing my new live show for the Edinburgh Festival which I hope you'll see at next year's Bath Comedy Festival (if I'm invited back). Is musical theatre a welcome break from comedy, and if so, do you prefer one to the other? No, not particularly. I really like doing my own thing. What IS a welcome break though is not having any responsibility for production, ticket sales, PR and all the other admin and anxiety that comes from putting on your own show. It is lovely to turn up, do a job, get paid and go home. And I do enjoy working in a large team of people and making new friends. What does the rest of 2016 have in store for you? I'll be developing my new show for The Edinburgh Festival, Kirsty and I are playing Glastonbury Festival which will be amazing, I have various gigs around the country and I think there's a short film in the pipe line too. Other than that, I'm busy voicing a couple of american cartoons which I absolutely love.

A brief history of Afternoon Tea There is nothing more quintessentially English than taking afternoon tea. While the custom of drinking tea itself dates back to the third millennium BC in China, this fashionable social event is somewhat of a recent addition.
Cakes and pastries are also served. Tea grown in India or Ceylon is poured from silver tea pots into delicate bone china cups.
During the mid-nineteenth century it was usual for people to take only two main meals a day, breakfast and dinner. Dinner was a more formal affair and would typically occur around 8 o'clock in the evening, thus leaving a long period of time between meals.
To experience the best of the afternoon tea tradition, indulge yourself with a trip to one of our finest hotels and restaurants who will be more than happy to offer you a special 'afternoon tea' experience.
Anna Maria would invite friends to join her in her rooms at Woburn Abbey during the summer and continued the practice when she returned to London, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for "tea and a walk in the fields." In order to suppress 'that sinking feeling' during the late afternoon, Anna Maria Russell, the 7th Duchess of Woburn asked that a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake be brought to her room during around 4 in the afternoon. Later Anna Maria would invite friends to join her in her rooms at Woburn Abbey during the summer and continued the practice when she returned to London, sending cards to her friends asking them to join her for "tea and a walk in the fields."
We have highlighted just a few of Bath's best places for you to try and allowed them to tell you a little more about their experience.
Other social hostesses quickly picked up on the idea and the practice became respectable enough to move it into the drawing room. Before long all of fashionable society was sipping tea and nibbling cakes in the middle of the afternoon. During the late nineteenth century, afternoon tea became extremely popular with the upperclass and society women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats. Traditionally, the upper classes would serve a 'low' or 'afternoon' tea around four o'clock. The middle and lower classes would have a more substantial 'high' tea later in the day, at five or six o'clock, in place of a late dinner. The names derive from the height of the tables on which the meals are served, high tea being served at the dinner table. Traditional afternoon tea consists of a selection of dainty sandwiches, scones served with clotted cream and preserves.

Taking tea’ has been a timeless tradition in Bath since the mid-18th century when it was very much in vogue for the aristocrats and socialites of the Georgian Era to indulge in afternoon tea. The Elizabeth Montagu Afternoon Tea - For this indulgent tea, David has taken inspiration from one of Britain’s most interesting 18th century social reformers and patron of the arts who spent much time at The Royal Crescent. Fashion and Style in abundance at The Gainsborough Bath Spa The Gainsborough Bath Spa which opened in 2015 as a new five star hotel has introduced a distinctive sense of fashion and style in the centre of Bath. Named after the famed artist, Sir Thomas Gainsborough, the Gainsborough Bath Spa has enjoyed a colourful history. Built in 1826 as the United Hospital, the building was expanded when the Albert Memorial Wing was constructed along with the chapel. The hospital moved in the 1930s when it had outgrown its site in the city centre. The building was then taken over by the Bath Technical College which merged with the College of Art and Design to become Bath College, which until 2005 housed the departments of Art, Design, Beauty and Hospitality. The major redevelopment has included the refurbishment of the main wings, a new wing on Lower Borough Walls and the redesigning of the adjoining Bellott’s, linked by a newly formed walkway. At the core of the hotel is Spa Village which has the exclusive privilege of having access to Bath’s natural thermal waters. Bathed in light emanating from the glass atrium, the Bath House experience enables guests and members to "take the waters" in luxury and enjoy a wide selection of beautiful spa treatments. The 99 guest rooms and suites are custom furnished, subtly referencing period details combined with modern facilities and comforts. The guest rooms and suites are airy and bright with views across the city to the surrounding hills. The Gainsborough is honoured to be partnering with world-renowned chef, Johann Lafer. Johann's 'Dining without Borders' gourmet philosophy is based on using fresh and locally sourced produce to create truly innovative dishes. Open to residents and non-residents, the Restaurant serves a delicious choice of lunch, pre-theatre and dinner menus. Additionally, the Canvas Room and Gainsborough Bar are the perfect places to relax and socialise in style where guests can choose from an all-day menu, afternoon tea and an extensive selection of drinks, including Champagnes, gins, fine wines and cocktails. The hotel is designed by New York based Champalimaud Design and pays homage to its colourful history - a modern interpretation of a classic design which will provide a meaningful and enduring contribution to the life of the city. Further details, including membership of Spa Village, are available at: www.TheGainsboroughBathSpa.co.uk

James Martin's delicious recipes for the perfect Afternoon Tea
Billionaire’s shortbread (or peanut butter caramel shortbread)
Orange and rapeseed oil cake with cream cheese frosting
It was one of my chefs’ ideas to call this billionaire’s shortbread – because millionaire’s shortbread is simply not a good enough name for this one. It certainly packs a high calorific value. It will definitely keep anyone at home happy for a few hours, as they won’t be wanting anything else. Serves 6–8 For the shortbread 250g softened unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 150g caster sugar 1 medium egg 150g cornflour 300g plain flour For the topping 300g caster sugar 175ml double cream 275g crunchy peanut butter 400g dark chocolate, roughly chopped
Recipes taken from 'More Home Comforts' by James Martin (Quadrille £20) Photography: Peter Cassidy
Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas mark 4. Grease and line the base and sides of a 30 x 23cm traybake tin.
Olive oil cake is nothing new to anyone who is familiar with Italian cooking. It keeps the cake lovely and moist. Rapeseed oil is a great alternative, as it has a slightly milder flavour. Serves 8–10 5 large oranges 100ml rapeseed oil 4 eggs 450g caster sugar 125g self-raising flour 125g ground almonds 2 teaspoons baking powder 150g cream cheese 150g crème fraîche 25g icing sugar 25g walnut halves, crumbled 1 tablespoon basil cress or tiny basil leaves Preheat the oven to 170°C/325°F/gas mark 3. Lightly butter a 23cm springform cake tin. Remove the zest from three of the oranges and set aside, then remove the pith and discard. Roughly chop the flesh, then either place in a saucepan with the rapeseed oil and blitz until puréed with a stick blender, or blitz with the oil in a food blender. Whisk the orange zest, eggs and 250g of the caster sugar in a food mixer or a large bowl with an electric whisk, until the mixture is very light and ribbons form when the whisk is lifted out. Mix the flour, ground almonds and baking powder together in a separate bowl. Fold half the puréed orange into the eggs, then add all the flour and the rest of the puréed orange.
Pour into the cake tin and bake for 1 hour until golden-brown and risen. Check the cake is cooked by inserting a clean skewer or knife into the centre – if it comes out clean, the cake is ready; if not, cook for a further 5 minutes and check once more. While the cake cooks, prepare the topping. Whisk the cream cheese, crème fraîche and icing sugar together in a bowl until smooth and thickened, and chill in the fridge until needed. Peel the last two oranges using a vegetable peeler, then slice the peel very finely into julienne. Put 150ml of water into a saucepan with 150g of caster sugar and the julienned orange peel. Bring to the boil and simmer for 8–10 minutes. Strain into a sieve set over a bowl and press through lightly to remove the sugar syrup. You can use this for a salad dressing or in another cake. Place the last 50g of caster sugar on a plate and toss the julienned orange peel into it, moving it around with your hands to make sure all the strands are coated. Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool in the tin before turning it out and cooling completely on a wire rack. Spread the frosting over the top of the cooled cake and decorate with crumbled walnut pieces, the candied julienne strips and basil cress. Without the cress the cake will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week.

To make the shortbread, mix the butter and sugar together in a bowl with an electric whisk until softened and lightened in colour. Add the egg and whisk together, then fold in the cornflour and plain flour to form a soft dough. Tip the dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and knead very gently until smooth. Press into the base of the prepared tin, spreading it evenly into the corners. Prick all over with a fork, then place in the fridge to rest for 15 minutes. Bake for about 25 minutes until just lightly coloured and firm to the touch. Meanwhile, make the topping. Put the caster sugar into a frying pan and heat gently, without stirring, until the sugar turns golden- brown and liquid. Whisk in the cream and cook until thickened and smooth, then whisk in the peanut butter – you want a thick, light golden-brown mixture. Remove from the heat and leave to cool until the shortbread is out of the oven. Pour the caramel over the shortbread, spreading it to the edges so there’s an even layer, then set aside to cool for at least 1 hour. Put the chocolate into a bowl set over a pan of simmering water until it has melted. Pour three-quarters of the chocolate over the cooled caramel topping, tipping the tray so that it coats all the caramel. Set aside at room temperature to cool for 30 minutes, then drizzle the remaining chocolate over the top. Set the tray aside until the chocolate has set – at least 1 hour. Lift the shortbread out of the tin by the edge of the silicone paper, and cut into triangles to serve.
pakoras from Darjeeling which were followed with Malabar marshmallows, both heavily spiced with cardamom, clove and cinnamon (and always sweetened). This base mix was also blended into the poorer grades of tea to bring them up to standard suitable for British envoys and ambassadors.
Recipes travelled with traders and brought the afternoon tea into line as one of the first ‘fusion’ cuisines.
How world cuisine has influenced Afternoon Tea over the years Josh White, Chef and Owner of The Tea Chaps, takes a look into how world food influences have helped spice up one of our favourite traditions. The history of afternoon tea is, gladly, so much more than that of egg mayonnaise or cucumber sandwiches. French influence was heavy on our food at the time, but soon with broader and more successful sojourns into Asian markets the new luxury of afternoon tea rapidly developed.
and beyond. With the country at its most affluent (the cost of living doubling) the most imported items to UK shores were sugar, silk, tea and butter. Then the addition of the popular world spices rounded the afternoon tea to the most elegant of events.
The travels and trading of a certain UK company helped bring the exotic spices of the world to the kitchens and country houses of booming Britain
Recipes travelled with traders and brought the afternoon tea into line as one of the first ‘fusion’ cuisines. In India we found tea leaf savoury
In the far reaches of China the world afternoon tea influence started to break through in the early 20th century. UK travellers had instilled their culture in many far east eateries, with recipes ranging from cured hams with mustard to creative cups made from spiced ginger or cocoa biscuits being crafted to hold thickened spiced creams and chocolates from Kerala. Even an Indian tea or two could be found on the Afternoon Tea tables of the best hotels. Tibetan momos and mango millefeuilles were not long lasting additions to our afternoon tea service here. As the Empire’s economy cooled, our tastes reverted to the tried and tested of centuries past. Ginger parkin and coronation chicken are the most exotic memories to be found in finger sized portions today. As it always has been and always shall remain, any afternoon tea is a special occasion no matter where you are. This is one of the few luxury ceremonies (not a service) to touch every corner of the metropolitan world.

The Challenges of Eating Seasonally
Richard Buckley, owner of North Parade Passage restaurant Acorn Vegetarian Kitchen, has constantly pushed the boundaries of vegetarian cuisine. Using cutting edge techniques to bring out the very best in local and seasonal produce, his exciting flavours, colours and detail are evident in every dish. Here, Richard tackles the challenges of eating seasonal, local produce throughout the year. as the season moves on. Unfortunately we have to do something, despite my best efforts you can’t serve five courses of cabbage and have customers leave happy.
Eating well is easy. Choose the best seasonal, local, organic produce, treat it simply and with skill and eat with people you care about. What more basic formulae could there be for living the good life? Only we have a problem in this country and that problem is called the hungry gap. Virtually nothing grows between November and April and by the end of February all the roots that have been so carefully stored for the winter have begun to run out. We are left with the hardy cabbages that can weather the frost and not a lot else. The problem is even more acute for people who choose to get most of their calories from plants. How do you eat seasonally, and therefore well, when your weekly veg box has become three varieties of cabbage and some sorry looking carrots. Even I have to cancel my veg box in these dark months before the spring. In the restaurant we find that our most dedicated suppliers stop delivering through the winter and what they do bring looks less and less useable
The first solution is to turn to the cupboard staples, the nuts, grains and pulses and try to find ways to turn them into a gourmet experience, (one that isn’t just add truffle!). The trouble is this can start to feel a little worthy and reminiscent of the bad old days of vegetarian food when everything was lentils, curries and nut burgers. Riverford have an ingenious idea and bring in vegetables from France arguing that it is closer for us in the south than Scotland, but even the French have a gap. Some nameless restaurateurs even choose to simply keep banging the seasonal drum on their menus whilst covering over the Spanish and Kenyan labels on their delivery boxes. This is wrong but you can see why they get so desperate. Nothing is growing. There are of course the few exceptions, purple sprouting broccoli is a welcome friend, cauliflower always seems to be there and kale is a nutritional boost, but these are still, if we are being honest, types of cabbage. There’s the forced rhubarb brightening the ashen skies with its vibrant pink hue but you can’t have pudding for every meal no matter how much you may want to. The first shoots of asparagus seem a lifetime away.
24
The answer, I have found, is to be a little less sanctimonious about it all. Eat and use what is best in the seasons, cauliflower can be delicious when handled with a deft touch, cabbage also, but if you have to buy a courgette from the supermarket then make sure you get a good one and remember that local is only one part of a good meal. As long as you treat it simply and well and remember to eat it in the company of good friends then the world is unlikely to end. Choose a beautiful bottle of wine to go with it, light a fire and just remember, when the season comes around, to make the most of those sweet little local courgettes again.

Magical Malta (part 2) Last month I offered a snap-shot of Malta the Mediterranean Island with so much to offer. This month I hope to purvey some more rather in- depth info that might entice you to its shores this coming summer. Starting with Valetta – all roads lead to this bustling shining honey-coloured city, in fact all bus routes do also which makes for a simple system if you (like us) decide to explore the gems of the Island by public transport. The ancient architecture of the cities of Malta are more than special as they illustrate styles and religions over the centuries. Each of these masterpieces are open to the public (some with small charges or voluntary contributions) and are adorned with the most wonderfully paintings and religious artefacts. South - east of Valetta is the funky fishing port of Marsaxloxx that offers the visitor an unrivalled view of sea life and a fishing market all rolled around an Azure blue bay. We found a bustling market on a Sunday and is truly bursting with energy and friendliness. The Fish market is bang in the centre of the Sunday market that purveys ephemera, souvenirs, and Maltese fast food! And in sort of North African way – thousands upon thousands of clothes. It’s a good two hours meandering around with the sea no more than 5 meters away at every gap between the stalls. Lunch called and Fish was our quarry. We found Ron’s Restaurant on the quay that looked full to bursting and just the ticket. It was – a couple of different freshly purloined whole grilled Bream a Green salad and a bottle of excellent Vermentino from Delicata that was wholly grown and created on the Island. Local grub at its very freshest and best. Expect around 40 Euros for two for this style of urban fare. Perhaps the jewel in the crown is the city of Mdina centrally positioned as the ancient capital of Malta. Its majestic battlements and villas sit cheek by jowl overlooking the Islands farmland, towns and villages. The atmosphere is majestic with extraordinary sites at every corner. Restaurants and bars, Tea rooms and museums it’s all here. One of the best surprises on Malta is the rise of quality wine on every restaurant list. Search further and visit the excellent Meridiana Vineyard and Winery who elaborate quality wine at most price points. Search for Fenici, Astarte and Isis for top draw whites they suit the fish a treat whilst Nexus Merlot (exceptional) and Celcius Cabernet Sauvignon are great Mediterranean quaffers of distinction. Visits and tasting by arrangement and worth it! Our journey also took us to Gozo the sister island positioned to the west. We boarded the
30 minute ferry from Cirkawwa to Mgarr and boarded the bus to the impressive Citadel in the capital city of Victoria. I found the walk to the top very rewarding as I glimpsed back to view the patchwork of sustainable farms and smallholdings, winding roads and the blue sea inviting you to swim and discover the charms of its harbours and inlets. Search out the rustic Ta’ Rikardu where the most beautiful dishes of Maltese character are offered. Washed down with his simple Rose wine and you will not want to leave. I met this rugged man on his farm a few days previous where his vineyards and goats live in close proximity. Olive oil, goats cheese, a sort of ravioli and fresh tomatoes and fruit are Rikardu’s main repertoire but beautifully executed with a simple charm you feast very well. A visit to Ta’ Mena winery just a stones throw from Victoria is a must for wine lovers. Quality organic wine is carefully crafted to an extremely high standard. It was hard to pick a favourite as sound hygienic winemaking kept surprising me. The ancient monuments are also very special – Gozo sporting the extraordinary Ggantija built over 5000 years ago. Like me I hope your visit will be a moving experience of something that man had made so long ago. Back on Malta a must visit amongst many accessible ancient sites are the Mnajdra Temples and marvel at the sheer feat of engineering needed to create the wonderful structures. My accommodation was at the exquisite Corinthia Spa Hotel where style meets conviviality. This is a 5 star hotel of distinction but with a beating heart! The staff are so good you want to stay a while more as they smile their way through the day with help and advice delivered with consummate ease. The restaurants in the Corinthia are created for any occasion with fine dining the pinnacle of Malta’s bourgeoning cuisine. Chef Director Stefan Hogan oversees a truly quality operation. His grasp on creating modern cuisine with a Mediterranean (Maltese) twist is the hallmark of the Corinthia’s table. My overview is of Malta in the 21st century is that it truly believes in itself, it has simply grown up no longer the poor relation of the Mediterranean Islands, it shouts from the top – come visit us! I am planning another visit next time to take in the Grand Prix, Festivals and more restaurants and wineries! Can’t wait. Stephen’s visit was funded by Visit Malta and the Corinthia Spa Hotel to whom we give our appreciation and grateful thanks. Air transport can be arranged (locally) from Exeter and Bristol airports. Stephen Barrett is a Wine, Food and Travel Writer based in Plymouth.

health and beauty Local Families for Local Children Bath and North East Somerset Council is keen to recruit a wide variety of people from all backgrounds to care for local children who are not able to live with their parents. This may be for a short period of time while difficulties at home are being sorted out or maybe for a longer period, possibly years, until the child grows up. We are especially looking for people willing to care for young people aged 11 and over as well as potential foster carers able to consider looking after family groups so that brothers and sisters can be kept together.
Expert Antenatal Ultrasound in Bath Clarion Health, a Care Quality Commission registered, private clinic in Bath has been offering its services to patients in the area for over 12 years.
As a well-deserved treat for mum and dad, siblings or other relatives and friends, why not book a Filmstar Baby 4D scan between 26 – 34 weeks?
Specialising in providing high quality antenatal ultrasound scans in a relaxed, caring and unhurried environment, the clinic offers a wide range of scans from 6 – 39 weeks. Intended to compliment, rather than replace the care currently provided on the NHS, Clarion aims to ensure that women can experience a stress-free and enjoyable pregnancy.
Using the latest in ultrasound technology, you will be able to sneak a peak at your unborn child moving in real-time, and see the features on your little baby’s face for the first time – maybe you will get to see your first smile! These precious memories can be captured on DVD and as glossy photos – an unforgettable and amazing experience.
Using the latest in ultrasound technology, you will be able to sneak a peak at your unborn child moving in real-time, and see the features on your little baby’s face for the first time – maybe you will get to see your first smile! Whether you have had difficulty conceiving, have had previous miscarriages, are anxious or want to confirm your pregnancy, Clarion offers viability and reassurance scans from just 6 weeks. Having a scan at this point can be a very welcome relief at a time that many women find extremely worrying and stressful. A wellbeing check is performed and you will receive the first set of images of your tiny baby!
Appointments are available on weekdays and weekends, and are all carried out by Advanced Ultrasound Practitioners and to NICE guidelines.
By 16 weeks, Clarion is able to determine whether you are having a little boy or girl, and many people opt for a gender scan at this stage – another chance for some pictures too! Your important 20 week NHS scan will check on babies development. However, if you want extra reassurance, a growth or a presentation scan, these can be carried out between 22 – 39 weeks and can help break up the often long and tiring second and third trimesters.

Carers receive and excellent support and training package, as well as a competitive allowance. One of our foster carers Diane told us what she thinks the most important qualities for fostering are: “The ability to bounce back quickly and start every day afresh.” “REALLY enjoy being around young people and being able to get back in touch with your own childhood experiences.” “To be able to laugh at situations and yourself!!” “To focus FAR more on what's going right rather than what's going wrong!!!” You need to have a spare bedroom and have the time to be able to devote to caring for a young person.
Good support and comprehensive training is offered to foster carers as well as a financial allowance. To find out more please contact the Bath and North East Somerset Family Placement Team on 01225 394949 for an initial discussion. Or you can email us: fpt_duty@bathnes.gov.uk.

The Brow Place gives us the lowdown on the best 'brow' treatments
Why massage can be beneficial during pregnancy Getting a massage during pregnancy can do so much more than just relieving the normal physical discomforts that are experienced at this time; such as backache, headaches, leg cramps and swelling. Here’s some Examples Why… • Having a regular massage can help to encourage a sacred connection with your baby by heightening your awareness of your own body and of your baby growing inside you. • The massage strokes and meditative techniques can help reach an inner calmness to help de-stress and relax. This is very important throughout your pregnancy and especially when it comes to labour as studies show that high levels of maternal cortisol (the stress hormone) may lead to complications throughout pregnancy and birth.
• Through nurture and promotion of the parasympathetic mode by massage tiredness can be eased, the digestion system can be optimised and our immune system functioning to the max.
Dedicated to providing physical and emotional support throughout the magical time that surrounds the birth of your baby • Breathing techniques that are used during a massage can calm your nervous system, creating a sense of grounding and of self-control.
Carrying a baby requires a lot of energy, therefore there is nothing more important than looking after yourself and your body during pregnancy,
• Stimulated circulation of blood throughout your body can distribute essential nutrients to all your vital organs especially the placenta, the source of nourishment for your baby.
Massage can be a great way of providing that therapeutic and healing touch that your body needs.
• The Brow Tidy - this treatment is suitable for anyone who is more-or-less happy with the shape of their brows. The shape will be tidied up so your brows are looking neater, sharper and, through removing any surrounding hair or 'fluff', more defined. If you have overgrown eyebrows, we will also be able to alter the shape to your liking, however as we just use the hair you have, how much we can change your shape really does depend on how much we have to work with. • HD Brows - a favourite amongst celebrities and Beauty bloggers, this treatment is suitable for anyone looking for a complete brow makeover. Your brows are tinted (a colour to suit you, anything from ash blonde to mid brown to very dark) and then shaped in a way which best compliments your face shape. Any areas which need extra hairs to grow will be pointed out and the treatment concludes with a makeup lesson so you know which products you can use to perfect your own brows every day. The only client less suitable for this treatment would be someone with sparse or patchy brows which are missing all/part of their brow hairs, as the tint will only pick up existing hairs and the makeup is designed to be applied daily to perfect your look. • Microblading (semi-permanent makeup) - perfect for anyone who would like lowmaintenance brows with more definition and fullness. Similar to semi-permanent tattooing (don't panic!), this treatment is performed using a hand-held tool (not a tattoo machine) which deposits pigment under a few layers of skin in strokes which look like real hairs! The results are very natural, can be as bold or subtle as you decide and after your top-up (6-8 weeks later) your newly perfected brows will last around a year!
SPECIALISTS IN ANTENATAL AND POSTNATAL MASSAGE
• Massage can encourage release of oxytocin, the hormone which reduces pain. Massage techniques and certain pressure points can be taught to a birthing partner which can ultimately help during labour! • The endorphins released during a massage will help you relax in body and in mind, giving you a natural high which is passed on and shared with your baby. This can also help to relieve depression or anxiety caused by the huge hormonal changes taking place in the body.
With brow-related cosmetic products now firmly placed in many women's 'makeup bag essentials' & brow appointments making their way into many of our monthly beauty routines plus professional brow treatments becoming more popular, it can be hard to know which of these treatments are your best option. Here is the lowdown on our 3 most popular treatments at 'The Brow Place':

As the fashion pack descends on the World Heritage City, the week-long programme promises stimulating debate, fast-paced catwalks, plus animation on the streets and in-store with Bath in Fashion LIVE, a new element for 2016. Respected commentators like Tim Blanks, Editor at Large for The Business of Fashion, Claudia Croft, head of fashion at Sunday Times Style and Hilary Alexander return to join the debate plus fashion writers like Colin McDowell and Avril Groom leading the conversation. Topics range from the sartorial style of Cecil Beaton and Sir Roy Strong to the influence of Valentino and Versace. Tim Blanks will be in conversation with Erdem. Erdem Moralioglu, trained at the prestigious Royal College of Art in London and is known for his experimental use of textiles, vibrant prints, and detailed craftsmanship. Erdem has received numerous accolades, including the British Fashion Council’s Red Carpet Award in 2013 and the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award in 2014. Dame Zandra Rhodes will be discussing her life and fabulous work with Sue James, Editorial Director of Woman & Home. Zandra headed the new wave of London designers in the Seventies and has stamped her identity on the world of fashion with her bold, colourful and feminine creations. She has designed for Princess Diana, Freddie Mercury and Diana Ross and her vintage dresses are much sought after for the Oscars. She founded London’s Fashion and Textile Museum and also designs for opera.
A Nicolas Oakwell couture gown, commissioned by No 10’s GREAT Britain campaign to showcase British couture design around the globe, is heading for Bath in April. Created for the GREAT Festival of Creativity in Shanghai, this exquisite gown, designed for super model Erin O’Connor, took 2320 hours and 90 metres of fabric to create and is embellished with hundreds of rubies and 200,000 ostrich feathers, each of which were hand sewn in place by students of the Royal School of Needlework.
Bath in Fashion stimulates debate with Avril Groom interviewing special guest Livia Firth, Creative Director of Eco Age Ltd and the driving force behind Green Carpet Challenge which catapults sustainable style into the spotlight at the world’s most high profile events. She has recently selected an Edit from the M&S Autumn/Winter ‘15 collection demonstrating how integrity is woven into the fabric of the firm. Ben Wild talks about his findings in “A Life in Fashion: The Wardrobe of Cecil Beaton”. Wild says “As a fashion researcher what strikes me about Beaton's dress is how relevant and contemporary it still is, some 34 years after his death.

Designs by Giles Deacon reveal his influence, as do those of Savile Row tailor Richard James. According to Vogue’s Hamish Bowles “Beaton depicted the most stylish people and places of the twentieth century”. British Vogue turns 100 in 2016 and to mark the occasion Bath based fashion writer Professor Iain R Webb has created the very first grown up Vogue Colouring Book. Inspired by fifties fashion as seen in Vogue, the book features hand drawn designs of glamorous gowns and dressy ensembles from designers like Dior, Balenciaga, Givenchy and Chanel. Ian R Webb, who confessed he always coloured outside the lines, said “it was a decade that went from black and white into colour; an era of matching gloves, haughty elegance and hour glass silhouettes”. Bath in Fashion is working with Iain Webb to create a giant colouring wall.

Elements of Capability; art at Lacock Abbey 30 April – 22 May 2016, 10.30am – 5.30pm An intriguing outdoor sculpture show, inspired by the landscape designs of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, is planned for beautiful Lacock Abbey by the National Trust. The show commemorates the 300th anniversary of the birth of Brown, whose vision transformed the grounds of the landed gentry in the 1700s. With a wave of his pencil he crossed out formal gardens with long straight walks, artificial fountains and topiary and in their place he drew a pastoral idyll of open fields, meandering lakes and lush woods.
Visitor Experience Officer, Rachael Holtom, said, ‘We are very lucky to have so many brilliant artists included in the show. Melissa Cole is a blacksmith artist from Marlborough whose work echoes the landscape and water theme and Corsham based Celia Smith’s delicate wire swallows will appear to fly over the meadow next to the abbey. Colourful stained glass depicting some of the wildlife that inhabited the landscapes are contributed by Bradford-on-Avon artist Annie Mulholland and Woody Fox’s life-like willow animals will surprise and delight.
The show commemorates the 300th anniversary of the birth of Brown, whose vision transformed the grounds of the landed gentry in the 1700s. Archives hold four receipts for work that Brown carried out at Lacock Abbey, but they only list the amount he was paid not the work he did and, despite visits by Capability experts, the team at Lacock can only guess what may have happened. ‘There used to be a large formal pleasure garden here next to the River Avon,’ said Head Gardener, Sue Carter, ‘at about this time that disappeared and was replaced by the field landscape that remains today. But, we really cannot say exactly what ‘Capability’ Brown did here.’ ‘Elements of Capability’ will echo Brown’s artistic vision and reflect the central elements of his designs: wide open skies, rolling meadows, hills fringed by woodland, placid reflective lakes and grazing animals.
Lisa Pettibone’s glass and mirror sculptures will literally reflect those large placid lakes Capability loved so much, while Anna Gillespie’s masterful bronze figure covered with ivy shows a man truly at one with nature. Finally, Lucy Strachan will show two pieces, including the eleven metre high ‘Godrod’ which links the land with the sky above.’ Lacock Abbey is near Chippenham, SN15 2LG. Normal admission applies. National Trust members and under 5s go free. Open daily, 10.30am – 5.30pm. Visit nationaltrust.org.uk/lacock or call 01249 730459 for more information.

Fashion fever
A History of Fashion in 100 Objects Opening 19 March 2016 The Fashion Museum Bath presents 100 ‘star’ objects from its collection in the headline exhibition ‘A History of Fashion in 100 Objects’. Taken together, these objects showcase a history of fashion from the 1500s to the present day.
Redesigning Bath during the Great War 13 February – 27 November Free with normal admission In 1916 while the country was in the middle of the Great War, Bath City Council commissioned an extraordinary project to redevelop the city centre. Designed by architect Robert Atkinson, it included a new concert hall, a large piazza by the Abbey, and the extension of the public baths.
One of the earliest garments on show is an intricately embroidered waistcoat worked in coloured silks and glittering metal thread worn by an aristocratic woman from the time of Shakespeare. Fast forward over 300 years, and the exhibition also includes an appliqué embroidered jacket by Paris couturier Lucien Lelong, worn by ‘Gone with the Wind’ actress Vivien Leigh in 1948.
Grand in its vision and ambitious in scale, Atkinson’s designs for Bath show early 20th century classicism at its most monumental. Publicly exhibited and widely reported in the architectural press, was this scheme seriously intended or was it propaganda to boost morale and project the confidence that war would soon be over?
Graceful silk robes and embroidered and tailored coats for men, the styles fashionable during Bath’s Georgian heyday are also on display, along with Regency fashions from the time of Jane Austen.
One of the earliest garments on show is an intricately embroidered waistcoat worked in coloured silks and glittering metal thread worn by an aristocratic woman from the time of Shakespeare A History of Fashion in 100 Objects includes ten shoe ‘moments’ throughout history, from Georgian silk shoes to trainers. There is also a children’s trail showcasing ten ‘historical fashion’ looks for kids, from the 1700s to the 2000s. Other activities at the Fashion Museum include dressing up in replica Victorian dress for adults and children. The Fashion Museum is open 10.30am – 6pm, last entry 5pm. Entry is free to local residents with a Discovery Card. Normal adult admission price is £8.75.

Interior designer, Kate Howard, of newly formed architectural and interior design practice Vesta Design, casts her expert eye over some great design ideas that can help you breathe new life into your home. warmer hues with rose gold, brass, copper and bronze being prominent. “Warm metals have been a strong trend throughout 2015 and they look set to stay for 2016,” says Kate. “Don’t be scared to mix metals as this can create a textural, layered look giving more visual interest.” Reflecting our need to switch off from the business of the modern world, furniture designs are leaning towards softer, more organic shapes with designs being taken from forms found in nature. The inspiration of the natural world can also be found in accessories, mirrors, and lighting from leading suppliers.
Kate Howard At the forefront of shaping interior design trends is Pantone’s “colour of the year” – selected as an expression of the mood and attitude of the current culture. For 2016, Pantone’s selection of two colours – Rose Quartz and Serenity – embodies tranquillity and mindfulness. Among the stresses of modern life, a leaning towards warm, restful tones and cool, serene colours in interiors allows us to create spaces in our homes with a sense of order and peace. Kate advises, “The beautiful soft tones of the 2016 colours of the year can be used on areas like feature walls or large pieces of upholstery without being too overwhelming. Alternatively, use these colours in feature fabrics on cushions or smaller upholstery items against a neutral palette for a soft, calm look with splashes of colour.” Echoing the warmth of Rose Quartz, metals in interiors look set to continue to lean towards the
For joinery pieces, bleached and limed woods are very much on trend at the moment, following the overall organic feel of furniture. Exposing the grain of the wood creates a connection with the material that can be lost with a painted or lacquered finish.
Vesta Design is a newly formed architectural and interior design practice based in Wiltshire. Founded in 2015 by sisters Kate Howard and Beth Williams, Vesta Design provides a fully integrated design service for your home. Architectural Designer and Certified PassivHaus Designer, Beth, and Interior Designer, Kate, have over 10 years' combined experience working in their separate specialisms within the property industry. Initially training in Structural Engineering and Architecture at the University of Sheffield, Beth has since worked in both architectural and engineering practices in Sheffield, Gloucestershire and Bath.
Complementing the furniture finishes, textured weaves and natural linens can be found in the new collections in fabric design at the moment. “Layer textures and combine small and large patterns to create a neutral scheme with interest,” suggests Kate.
Beth has experience working with new build, extension and conversion projects, working with Listed Buildings and in National Parks. Kate started her design life studying Theatre Design at Wimbledon School of Art and has since retrained in interiors.
And Kate’s final piece of advice if you are thinking of updating your home for 2016? “It’s always exciting to see the new designs and finishes being introduced each year but my biggest piece of advice when considering a new scheme for your home would be to remember that it is your home and you have to love it!
An experienced designer and project manager, Kate was based in Surrey for several years, where she worked on numerous high end residential projects, for both private clients and developers.
At Vesta Design, we keep on track of the current collections from all our suppliers but our biggest inspiration is the client. We make sure we listen to their ideas and take a detailed brief because they are the ones who will ultimately live with the scheme we have created!”
With such a wide base of design experience and industry connections, Vesta Design can provide you with a full service from initial design through to project management and completion, giving you continuity of support throughout your project. Kate and Beth share their thoughts on architectural and interior design for 2016.

Designs on low-cost living Vesta Design's Beth Williams takes a look at how the latest in architectural design is helping reduce our carbon footprint. to run, are healthier places to live and work, and continue to be affordable far into the future,” she explains. The fantastic thing about sustainable building techniques is that they can be used on any style of project, from contemporary to period. “A lot of people associate environmentallyfriendly building with off-the-wall ‘hippie-style’ buildings which are not to the mainstream taste,” says Beth. “In fact, green design can be used for any style of building. A lot of new sustainable architecture is very contemporary in feel, whereas standards such EnerPHit allow designers to improve the eco-credentials of refurbishment projects on older buildings.” Beth Williams
The shift towards organic forms in interiors could be a product of society’s increased concern with environmental matters and a shift in thinking towards a more sustainable future. Architectural developments in sustainable materials and building techniques have progressed significantly in recent years as people strive to lessen their carbon footprint for the benefit of future generations.
One of the key recent developments in lowenergy building is a focus on improving the airtightness of the building fabric to reduce the energy usage of a building. “The average house in the UK loses 60% of its enclosed volume of air every hour though unwanted leaks and drafts,” says Beth. “That’s warm air that you’ve paid to heat up, lost to the outside.” A PassivHaus by comparison will lose only 3% of its air volume every hour, meaning that you keep almost all of your precious warm air.
The fantastic thing about sustainable building techniques is that they can be used on any style of project, from contemporary to period. As a certified PassivHaus designer, Beth keeps up to date with the latest in green building. “At Vesta Design, we believe in leaving our clients with houses that will stand the test of time. We are passionate about low-energy, 'fabric-first' design. We are also firm believers in well researched methods which is why we encourage PassivHaus, and the AECB Silver standard (which is less stringent). In all our designs we take a long term view to create buildings and spaces that demand less energy
Airtightness doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive to achieve. Airtight materials can be standard construction materials such as plastered blockwork walls, concrete floor slabs and good quality timber windows. At Vesta Design, we pride ourselves on careful design, sensible detailing and a close working relationship with tradespeople on site to produce low-energy homes which don’t cost the earth to run or to build.

Creating a 'design theme' with Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen
When people ask me where they should start designing their room, I often suggest they begin with a cold glass of chardonnay. Though this advice may sound flippant, there is a point to it – at this first stage of the design process it is important that you are as relaxed and as unconstrained as possible. Spend time building up a mental picture of your own fantasy room; the more a scheme gets thought through, the better it becomes. By the time I hit the drawing board, I like to feel that the whole thing has been more or less entirely thought through in my head.
DIY doesn’t just stand for ‘do it yourself ’; it can also mean ‘design it yourself ’. This is where the real fun comes in, giving you the opportunity to really make your mark on a space. To create your dream room you will need to assemble some inspiration. At this stage, try to keep it as broad as possible. If something appeals, then photograph it or tear it out of a magazine. A fridge, a colour, a tropical island, or a pattern on a couture frock – some of the most unexpected things can provide you with that potentially highly creative starting point. Once you have assembled images for what is known in the trade as a ‘mood board’, put them together on a piece of card. The images don’t need to be arranged in orderly fashion, the point is to see whether any particular combination of images stands out. You may well find that one image next to a picture of something completely different suddenly inspires that spark of inspiration and, hey presto, a creative idea is born. Now start collating that creative freedom into some thing more structured. With your empty room firmly fixed in your mind, try painting it in imaginary colours with imaginary treatments for the walls. Play around with different floor ideas. All the while you should keep relating back to your mood board for inspiration. Taken from 'Decorating with Laurance' – Quadrille Publishing Ltd www.quadrille.co.uk

Ever Closer Referendum by Bath Building Society CEO Dick Jenkins
"
I’m the one that’s still up at 4am in the morning priding myself that I could point on a map to where constituencies like Batley and Spen, Ogmore or Billericay actually are, and I can’t help but think I’ll get the same excitement and nerdy fascination out of this referendum.
But as for the substance of the issue; whether we should stay in the rotten club or step out into the wilderness, I simply don’t know. For once in my life I find myself to be a floating voter and I have a real sense that by the day of the referendum I may be none the wiser. Dick Jenkins Bath Building Society Now that Mr Cameron has collected enough air-miles from jetting around Europe, we are entering a phase of Ever Closer Referendum. Doubtless there will be well-orchestrated campaigns on both sides of the argument seeking my vote and if history is anything to go by they’ll be far more interested in scaring me about what will happen if the ‘Other Lot’ get their way, rather than actually informing me rationally and engagingly about their own vision. I can just see the televised debates (Dimbleby, surely?) in which soundbites and selective “facts” are traded and endless polls (wrong, surely?) as the months stretch out in front of us. I can’t wait! No, I’m not being sarcastic! I get a great buzz out of general elections. I’m the one that’s still up at 4am in the morning priding myself that I could point on a map to where constituencies like Batley and Spen, Ogmore or Billericay actually are, and I can’t help but think I’ll get the same excitement and nerdy fascination out of this referendum.
Somebody asked me the other day, “If we left the EU, what would that mean for the UK housing and mortgage market?” It’s a perfectly straightforward question but it shocked me that I’d never given it serious thought. But asking around I found that many people in our industry don’t seem to have given it that much thought, either. Well, let’s think about it for a minute…. The housing market is generally an indicator of the wider economy. Most analysts seem to think that leaving the EU would reduce growth or even prompt a new recession, possibly resulting in a house price correction and restrictions to credit. The economy generally responds badly to uncertainty and should Britain vote for out, then my guess is that we would face a fair amount of economic turmoil as the markets adjust to new uncertainties. European money which has long held up the London market is likely to fall away and the housing market in the capital would drop, especially if the pre-eminence of London as Europe’s financial capital should fall away. If we did see a substantive fall in net migration, then this would take pressure off the housing market and prices might fall back.

"
Most experts think that the pound would drop and this might encourage the Bank of England to raise interest rates to support the value of the pound. Good for savers but not borrowers or the mortgage market in general. On the other hand, the economy might fly with the prospect that Britain would be able to go forward with far less regulation and being outside the EU would make us a magnet for investment and be a spur to innovation and competitiveness Since I’ve started thinking about this, I’ve poked around the internet researching what true experts think. It’s clear that the only thing they can say for sure is that a decision to leave takes us into very uncharted waters. Mr Cameron’s travels have made us a little better informed of what the EU might look like if we stay, (not much changed, it seems) but we really don’t have a clear understanding of what terms we’d be working to if we leave. Bring on Dimbleby!
