New Year, New Opportunities at Bath College If you’re looking for a new way to challenge yourself in the new year take a look at Bath College’s Love2learn part-time leisure courses.

You can choose from a five-week introduction to philosophy, practice your counselling skills or enrol on one of our popular digital marketing courses and learn how to boost your online presence. In January, we start our beginner’s courses in French, German, Spanish, Japanese and Italian. These courses are ideal if you have no previous language skills but want to be able to have a simple conversation. We’re also looking forward to welcoming students who’d like to study classical guitar. You don’t need to have any experience of playing the guitar and by the end of course you’ll have covered tuning, essential chords and picking techniques. For sewing fans, there’s a 10-week course where you can learn how to make Roman blinds and London blinds with a specialist tutor to guide you through measuring up, marking up and fitting. Or, if you haven’t used a sewing machine before, we have a new sewing skills course which will help you learn machine stitch skills and how to follow a pattern. If you’re looking to do up your house, you can learn more about this on a painting and decorating, or plastering course, at our Somer Valley Campus in Radstock. We hold a number of courses at our Somer Valley Campus, including a four-week motor vehicle maintenance course. This will teach people a range of basic skills, including removing a wheel if you get a flat tyre, inspecting brake discs, and checking tyre pressures. It’s perfect for young people starting to learn to drive and would also suit drivers who want to cut the cost of routine maintenance. Anna Dawson, Love2learn co-ordinator at Bath College, is looking forward to a new year and welcoming new and regular students. She said: “In 2016 we welcomed over 1500 students from all over the region who came to us looking to further their skills for work or leisure and we are expecting another busy year in 2017, so I would encourage people to sign up for courses as early as possible.” To take advantage of our advent calendar offers visit www.bathcollege.ac.uk/advent2016 before you enrol.

Christmas has come early at Theatre Royal Bath with a chance to win tickets to two fantastic shows

Twankey; and Gemma Naylor from nickjr’s children’s musical show Go!Go!Go! appears as Princess Jasmine. Join in the fun and visit the Theatre Royal Bath for a truly spectacular festive treat for the whole family to enjoy.

Everybody in the theatre can hear you scream! Now celebrating its 27th year in the West End, Stephen Mallatratt’s adaptation of Susan Hill’s best-selling novel has terrified nearly 8 million theatregoers.

Robin Herford's gripping production is a brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror. It tells the story of a lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a ‘Woman in Black’. He engages a young actor to help him tell his story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories, they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie marshes and moaning winds. The border between make believe and reality starts to blur and the flesh begins to creep… Mr. Kipps is played by David Acton who has worked with the RSC, Propeller, Out of Joint and the Peter Hall Company. His television credits include Doctors and Downton Abbey. The Actor is played by Matthew Spencer, last seen at the Theatre Royal Bath in the Headlong/Almeida production of 1984, a role he has played all over the world. In 2012, The Woman in Black was released as a major film, starring Daniel Radcliffe, which successfully became the highest grossing British horror film in 20 years. The sequel, The Woman in Black 2: Angel Of Death came out in 2014. The Woman in Black appears at the Theatre Royal Bath from Monday 21st to Saturday 26th November.

A sensation in the world of jazz

One of the UK’s finest singers and much loved performers Clare Teal announces the release of her latest album Twelve O’Clock Tales, accompanied by full orchestra and big band – 93 musicians in total. From swing to sublime ballads, Twelve O’Clock Tales reflects Clare’s versatility as a performer, and her agile and expressive voice is captured in the rich, eclectic, jazz infused repertoire ranging from Cole Porter, Billy Strayhorn, Rodgers and Hammerstein to Tim Rice, and Sting. Clare speaks to former work colleague, Craig Maplesden about the new album, having the attention span of a goldfish and how Edam cheese makes her mad. Many thanks for taking the time out in your busy schedule to talk to us. For those who don't know, we used to work together in Bath. I remember going along to one of your first gigs at PJ Peppers, with a couple of work colleagues. When you look back, did you ever, in your wildest dreams, think that you would have the success you have had? That’s a blast from the past! It really was one of my first ever gigs I remember the flyers said, ‘jazz with a twist’ which I thought sounded dead sophisticated. It seems a very long time ago… it was a very long time ago. To answer the question no I never thought I’d end up make a living out of music. I know this has always been your dream of yours and you must pinch yourself at times. What advice would you give to anyone out there who is gigging week in, week out trying to make it into the music business? I’d say do every single gig to the absolute best of your ability, follow up every opportunity no matter how small, and most importantly always make sure you have enough money to pay your rent, success rarely happens overnight. In my case, 5 years of selling advertising on the telephone taught me how to negotiate and how to handle rejection, skills which have proved extremely useful over the years. Your latest album is called ‘Twelve O’ClockTales’ and is accompanied by the Halle' Orchestra. How did this collaboration come about? I’ve had the pleasure of performing with various orchestras over the years, and have developed a close association with the Hallé in particular. One evening last June I was having a postconcert beer with conductor Stephen Bell, and I mused how amazing it would be to record with the Hallé one day. Eight months later that dream somehow became a reality - I still can’t quite believe it.

work mixing the record. We called in a huge amount of favours to make the album and will be forever indebted to everyone involved. The album shows your versatility as a performer. There is everything from swing to sublime ballads; Cole Porter to Sting. Does this make the process more difficult, as you are taking on different styles? I think having the attention span of a goldfish is the reason we cover so many different styles of music. It all falls under the umbrella of jazz, but when you’re drawing on nearly a hundred years of music there’s obviously a lot to choose from. I worked closely with musical director and arranger Guy Barker selecting the material. Our very own local hero Jason Rebello played world class piano and arranged one of the numbers too. You seem to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of jazz, swing and big band music, which certainly comes across in your Radio 2 programme. Has this style of music always been a passion? Yes weirdly the first music I fell in love with as a kid was a pile of old scratchy 78s mainly British Dance Band stuff, Geraldo, Squadronaires, Joe Loss and American Big Bands like Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Count Basie. It’s funny how all these years later I get to play tunes on the wireless I was listening to in the attic on an old dansette two tone record player circa 1978 Who would you listen too growing up and were there any other styles of music/bands/ artists that you liked to listen to? These days the radio is on 24 7 and I listen to and love all kinds of music but growing up only a few pop records filtered in but it was mainly jazz and big band records, my biggest influence is Ella Fitzgerald, closely followed by Peggy Lee and Doris Day.

How much control do you have over a collaboration of this scale?

Would you say that Jazz and Big Band music is currently in good health?

I’ve had the good fortune to be signed to a couple of major labels but when I came out of contract in 2009, my partner Muddy Field and I decided to set up on our own and Mud Records was born and we’ve never looked back. Twelve O’Clock Tales is the most ambitious project I’ve ever been involved with let alone produced. One massive orchestra plus a full roaring big band bolted onto the side – 93 musicians in total all playing at one and the tame time recorded in two days. It was only after we finished the session, the enormity of what we’d just done sunk in, if anything had gone wrong, a power cut or technical glitch ie engineer Paul not hitting record – we’d have been well and truly scuppered. Big shout out to Bath based co-producer Mark Frith who worked tirelessly putting in some incredible

I am very pleased to report that the jazz and big band scene is thriving. In this processed x factor age we live in I think there’s an increasing appetite for nutritious live unaltered music in all its glory.

How easy is it to break into this genre of music? I think there’s a huge amount of luck involved, being in the right place at the right time but I’m a firm believer that you create your own luck. I think it was Sam Goldwyn who said, “The harder I work the luckier I get.” We see numerous talent shows offering singers that 'big break'. Do you watch any

of them? Is there any really substitute for learning your craft by gigging week-on-week? And if you were approached, would you be part of a 'Jazz Star' type programme that could find the next 'Jazz' singing star? I admire any singer who has the confidence to put themselves through the modern talent show process – it must be terrifying. I tend to work most weekends so don’t get chance to watch TV. I’m grateful that I’ve had the chance to learn my craft solidly over the last twenty years in jazz clubs, theatres and festivals, I know how much I’ve learned over this time and I can’t imagine the pressure of having to appear as fully formed ‘artist’ within a matter of weeks. With your busy schedule, how often do you get back to Bath? We currently live in Glastonbury but still regularly visit the city. It was home for 15 years and many of our friends are still there, so we’ll always keep coming back. Are there any regular haunts that always makes you pine for your next return? Schwartz Bros. Burger! I miss Ye Olde Farmhouse as that’s where I started singing when I first came to Bath. Last year, there was a Facebook challenge that asked nominees to name 7 interesting facts that people may not know about you. What would yours be? I can say the Alphabet backwards very quickly. I have a morbid fear of wasps. When I was 13 movie star Deanna Durbin became my pen friend. I find it very difficult to throw anything away I collect Christmas records I have a tendency to drive in third gear…. Everywhere Edam cheese makes me very cross You're holding a dinner party and can invite 5 people (living or dead). Who would they be and why? Songwriter and wit Cole Porter, Jazz singers Ella Fitzgerald and Anita O’Day I reckon they’d have been great fun to hang out with, legendary radio producer Alan “Barrowlands” Boyd he certainly knows how to start a party and of course my other half Muddy – the best company. Other than the new album and radio commitments, what else does the rest of 2016 have in store? Touring right up to Christmas It's lovely to catch up with you. I am so happy that all the hard work has paid off for you and you are living your dream.

It is nevertheless possible to appreciate the beauty of foreign objects without knowing much about their history or cultural context. The Museum has worked with illustrator Chloe Regan, who graduated from the Royal College of Art with a MA degree, to explore different ways of seeing an object. Looking from different angles and observing details, standing from a distance as well as sitting close to the cabinets, Chloe Regan has created a series of drawings showing how she engages with unfamiliar works of art by focusing on their shape, the e0ffect of light and shade as well as surface decoration and texture. All ages are welcome!

The stalls offer a wonderful range of arts and crafts including ceramics, textiles, jewellery, and prints.

The Museum provides a wonderful venue for meeting up with family and friends before Christmas, with the shops selling a fascinating range of original Christmas gifts and decorations, and the café providing delicious food and drink.

See how the gentry of the day lived and how challenging the lives of their servants were. From 21 November until 11 December the house will be decorated for Christmas, with swags of foliage, ribbons, pomanders, spices, dried fruit and flowers. Christmas Day itself was a fairly low key celebration 250 years ago, and people did not make much of a fuss of it as a holiday, certainly not in the city where many businesses remained open. Some wealthy people left Bath to go to their country estates. Christmas evening meals or suppers did take place but the menus were not necessarily that special, just a good dinner of roast meats, etc. Christmas decorations had both pagan and Christian associations in that the idea of decorating with winter greenery (Bay, Rosemary, Ivy and Yew) certainly was a pagan one, marking the darkest days of winter when these evergreens were the only sign of life. Equally, holly with its red berries came to be seen as a symbol of the Crown of Thorns. Mistletoe was considered pagan with its roots in Norse legends and some churches banned it as a decoration in the 18th century, but it was popular with poorer classes because of its association with love and large bunches were hung in kitchens, coffee houses and taverns. Children helped decorate the house by laying holly sprigs on window sills on Christmas Eve.

Talk and book signing by Peter Brown on Saturday 3 December 11.30am - 12.30pm, free with Exhibition ticket This new book features over a hundred new oil paintings and drawings by Bath-based artist Peter Brown, whose practice of painting in the open air has earned him the nickname ‘Pete the Street’. Sally Lunn's et al - Peter Brown 2016

Peter Brown: A Bath Painter’s Travels 3 December 2016 – 19 February 2017 This selling exhibition features over 100 new oil paintings and drawings by Bath-based artist Peter Brown (more commonly known as ‘Pete the Street’) which celebrate the streets and green places of Bath.

The publication accompanies an exhibition organised by the Victoria Art Gallery, with ‘live’ voice diary commentaries by Pete, who is widely acclaimed as one of Britain’s best plein air painters. Wherever he goes, the streets, parks and waterways throb with life thanks to Peter Brown’s unerring eye for local life and colour, be it human or animal, car or rickshaw.

The works of art include scenes of well-loved Bath locations such as George Street, Lansdown and Milsom Street, as well as lesser-known but equally beautiful corners of the city. These views are captured in different states: busy and quiet and in all weathers, including sunshine, rain and snow.

"Bath was the city really which inspired me. I owe a lot to the city and it’s still inspiring me." The artist uses the street as his studio and incorporates passers-by into his work. Brown says of his approach: “Bath was the city really which inspired me. I owe a lot to the city and it’s still inspiring me. The thread in all my paintings is an interest in light. I relish the variety of our British climate and dramatic changes in the weather. When it rains the whole composition’s transformed and when you get a really good heavy rain I have very limited time to actually get the paint on. I stop when I’m absolutely soaked through.”

Choose from our extensive menu, which aims to offers a variety of specially selected dishes created from Cantonese, Szechuan and Peking cuisine. Old favourites such as sweet and sour, ginger and spring onion, mingle freely with the more exotic creations typified by our much-loved lobster and crab dishes. The Peking Duck is, as you might expect, a particular speciality, but please remember, as the dish is prepared entirely on the premises you do have to book this in advance (preferably 24hrs). As an alternative for the more spontaneous, our Crispy Aromatic Duck needs no advance order and is actually one of the most popular choices on our menu. At Peking we cook using a combination of fresh, simple ingredients cooked in very little oil, retaining essential nutrients, minerals and vitamins. Most ingredients are locally sourced where possible, to give our customers the most delicious oriental experience. We look forward to welcoming customers old and new to our recently refurbished restaurant. We are sure you will leave with a floral arrangement all your Christmas guests will be envious of! Shrug off the shackles of the three course meal and spice up your Christmas celebrations at Koh Thai Tapas. A restaurant of contradictions, Koh offers authentic Thai tastes; but enjoyed with an infectious blend of European tapasstyle dining - great for the adventurous and social diner. You’ll find Koh is always a hive of activity; but everyone inside is relaxed. The restaurant always feels cosy, with candlelit brickwork and Thai latticework against amazing street art murals, despite the historic setting. Split across three floors, the venue is deceivingly large and perfect for groups with every table feeling exclusive and somewhat private.

food and drink grapey/melon fruit blast over a soft easy drinking style. This is a moderately priced wine that is available now and will be this price for the foreseeable future i.e. it might run out! Claret is another wine that seems (along with Port) to be a favourite at Christmas so look out for recognisable discounted favourites for a Christmas treat, But White Bordeaux also merits a mention with Sauvignon Blanc driven wines showing subtlety and minerality rather than a blast of Lychee scented alternative from (say) New Zealand or South Africa. These are subtle and gentle wines that are a great match with food. I sipped on the lovely Dorthe La Grand Cuvee AC Bordeaux 2015 – Sauvignon Blanc - £8.99 Waitrose this week with a selection of vegetarian dishes. It worked really well.

Celebrate the festive season with Prosecco and Claret. Just a few more weeks to go to the Christmas holiday so I will be featuring wines that are both good value and good taste! Wines don’t have to be “off the clock” in cash terms to be good but each individual budget differs and so will my selections. Sparkling wines, whether Prosecco, English sparkling wines, Cava or Champagnes are all under the microscope where Christmas is concerned. As I have mentioned before prices will be a key to Supermarket purchases as Sparkling wines will be offered almost at cost up to and over the Christmas and New Year period.

Prosecco is a winner for the casual Fizz market with lots of styles and prices at all outlets. I am never sure if we know enough about Prosecco? Not many brands come to mind as we slurp our way though this foamy fizzy style of wine. The Italian market has scored a bull’s eye with Prosecco as it ploughs forward with no abating in sight. So Prosecco it is then and what have I been sipping? Duca del Poggi Extra Dry coming in at 11% by volume at just £5.99 from Bargain Booze. This is a genuine Prosecco with the DOC label of authenticity to the cork stopper. It is (fairly) dry, drier than most with the unmistakable

Its red brothers also showed very well starting with a favourite of mine I have written about before. This is the new vintage of 2014 for Chateau Brassac £9.99 from the Co-op. This is an easy drinking vintage wine based on Merlot with Cabernet backing up the blend. It is unashamedly full of fruit and spice with a supple dryish finish. A very easy sipper is this one! Last the intriguing Diane de Belgrave 2010 Haut Medoc available from Oddbins at £18.50 Equal measures of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a smaller back-up of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot make for a more complex wine. Rich, ripe black fruits on the nose are quickly followed by a soft approachable wine of distinction. The wine is at its peak with six years bottle age and would be a great match with the classic Ribs of Beef. This is mid-priced Claret that deserves a grand supper that I know many of you will be creating sometime over the Christmas holidays. As the man said – Something for everyone!

Bath Brew House: A warm welcome awaits this Christmas

The Bath Brew House has become a firm favourite as a well-loved pub where Bathonian’s can celebrate Christmas.

As one of Bath’s only venues with private karaoke pods, we’ve got the facilities to round off a fantastic evening whether you’re dining or just coming in for drinks. The Cork’s garden doesn’t lose any of its appeal in the winter either, with a number of heaters to fight off the chills while you enjoy a glass of in-house mulled wine and cider. This year sees the return of their ultra violet (UV) fancy dress party complete with UV face painting, DJ playing cheesy 90’s dance music and free entry! The evening kicks off from 8pm till late. Now in their fourth year and after winning Bath CAMRA City Pub of the Year 2015/16 and the Great British Pub Awards ‘Best free house in the Southwest 2015/16’ they are clearly one of the best pubs that Bath has to offer and a must see for anyone who hasn’t already visited them.

A vote for

Independents

Much has changed over the past 20 years on our typical British 'high street'. Technological innovations, economic pressures, ever evolving products, tastes and strategies have influenced the landscape as well as our shopping trends. The growth of out-of-town shopping, compounded by the impact of on-line retailing has created enormous challenges for the traditional high street and especially for local, independent traders as they battle with adapting to change but also maintaining their uniqueness and independence. With tougher economic conditions gripping the UK since 2008, coupled with many national chains severing their links, the traditional high street is now showing signs of reverting back to an older model - when Britain was considered a 'nation of shopkeepers'.

Unique Items:

Independent shops are the perfect place for a unique gift or item. Typically, a local trader will focus on local producers whether they be a local artist, designer, author or farmer - items that you will not see on the shelves of a national chain.

Boost to the local economy:

Recent research suggest that 63 pence in the pound spent at a local, independent retailer would find its way back into the local economy, compared to just 40p with a larger business.

With many national chains severing their links, the traditional high street is now showing signs of reverting back to an older model - when Britain was considered a 'nation of shopkeepers'. If you ever wondered what the benefits of using Independent shops may be to you, your town and the local economy, then read on:

Traceability:

Most local retailers will know exactly where they or their provider gets their products from. This enables your independent retailer to let you know where the product was made/grown giving peace of mind as the purchaser. With recent scandals involving supermarkets and 'meat' providers this extremely sensitive situation can be avoided.

48 inbath

Increase in house prices:

The impact of a thriving independent high street has a knock-on effect to the cost of local house prices. On average, house prices in a prosperous area such as these have risen by ÂŁ40,000.

Community:

Continuing the community theme – as more towns promote and support local retailers, in turn local retailers will support the local community by holding events, fayres and markets to entice more people into the local community as well as add a 'social' aspect to area.

Personal touch:

As soon as you walk into an independent shop you immediately notice the difference. Not only will you generally find the owner of the business on hand to give you their advice, background to the product and expert opinion but also you will inevitably find that (depending on the item) you can 'try before you buy' – giving you piece of mind and a sense of 'customer service' that has long been a distant memory for many larger businesses. You may also find that you get more for your money. How many times has there been an extra roll thrown in for a familiar face to the local bakery or a little discount when purchasing a couple of items. Again, something that is alien to the big chain and certainly something the member of staff will not be sanctioned to give.

Choice:

Having Independent retailers within any shopping district gives us as buyers choice. Many town centres and high streets have recently been criticised for being 'cloned' - offering the same uniformed goods, products and services. As we all have different tastes and styles, independent retailers can offer this choice which adds something different to what would be a very boring high street. With the years busiest shopping period on the horizon, we take a look at some of the best areas of the city to find Independent retailers and even highlight some that desrve a special mention.

Verve Living

It's very easy to find that you have spent the entire day shopping in Bath - with its winding passageways and boutique style shops. As big name high street chains fall over themselves to be part of the cities growing retail credentials it is satisfying to find that Bath also has a thriving independent sector. We have selected some of cities best 'Indies' for you to try out and see why Bath loves its Independent retailers.

Verve Living

15 Walcot Buildings, Bath, BA1 6AD Tel: 07785 332536 www.verveliving.uk

Verve offers a fresh concept for your living space - one that is creative, distinctly and uniquely yours. Located in Bath’s ‘artisan quarter’, on the rapidly revitalising London Road, Verve is the brainchild of creative/marketing duo Michelle and Jacqui, who have pulled together an eclectic selection of unique pieces for the home - furniture, lighting, accessories and artwork - and present it all in an airy and über-stylish setting. Everything they stock is sourced or created in Britain and they have partnered with some fabulously talented designers and artists, with new pieces being added all the time. Verve aims to offer inspiration when it comes to helping their customers create a home space which reflects their personality, rather than a 'one size fits all’ approach. They like to source unusual or unexpected items and to show how these can work alongside existing pieces, to suit a customer's lifestyle and individual needs. They also firmly believe all this can be achieved without the need for a ‘break the bank’ budget. It's all very un-High Street and well worth a visit. Amanda has found her ‘Destination’ tea towel range has proved very popular with locals and tourists alike which showcase local areas in Bath and Widcombe including the local rugby and football teams! She has also developed a unique way of turning your photos in to art with her trademark resin artwork. Designing photos in to a collage effect on raised blocks to give a 3D effect, Amanda covers the entire picture in resin to give it a high gloss finish. These are a perfect way to release your photos from an album or your computer to be displayed as a piece of art on your wall and make great gifts for special occasions. Flamingo recently won the award for ‘Best Independent Newcomer’ and was runner up in ‘Best Window Display’ in MP Ben Howlett’s inaugural Best of Bath Businesses Awards. After moving to Bath I trained as a Nursery Nurse which I absolutely loved for 7 years, but was feeling the need of a fresh challenge and when Amy suggested her idea for The Brow Place it felt right (and scary, having never run a business before or worked in beauty). A new, independent business was born.

On 23rd October 2016, The Brow Place proudly celebrated its 3rd birthday. Sue & Amy Adams could have rented a space in an existing store (replicating existing brow bars) but they had a vision of applying the same private experience of traditional beauty salons to the brow industry. There was an element of risk, having the same overheads as a beauty salon, but being solely reliant upon the demand for eyebrow maintenance (and a few lash treatments). Sue Adams, Co-founder of The Brow Place says: It’s been a varied career path that brought me to owning the salon, and the title of the

Prague Christmas Market

Christmas Markets: Europe's Best

Innsbruck

November 15 – January 6 2017 Open daily from 11 am till 9 pm Imagine the lights of a Christmas tree rivalling the glistening tiles of the Golden Roof, the aroma of freshly made “Kiachln” (piping hot doughnuts laced with Sauerkaut), and the sound of traditional Christmas carols. This is Christmas time in Innsbruck. Every Advent in the historic part of Innsbruck, in front of the famous Golden Roof and surrounded by beautifully preserved medieval facades, you will come across the Old Town Christmas Market. Strolling through the market you will find Christmas ornaments, handicrafts and other winter treats. Traditional dishes such as Kiachln and a mug of Glühwein (mulled wine) will keep you warm whilst mingling with the locals and making new friends.

Vienna

November 12 - December 24 Daily 10am - 10pm Step into the joy of Christmas with the beautiful streets of Vienna as your backdrop. Punch and chestnut stands draw customers with seasonal treats and stallholders get shoppers in the Christmas spirit with handcrafted goods. The Christmas Markets in Vienna truly are an age-old tradition. The forerunners of the presentday events date back to the Middle Ages when in 1298 Albrecht I granted Vienna's citizens the privilege of holding a December Market or "Krippenmarkt". Nowadays, over 20 official Advent Markets sell a vast array of seasonal gifts and mouth-watering treats.

Lille

November 18 to December 30 Daily 11.00am to 8.00pm

54 inbath

On Place Rihour, 80 wooden chalets teem with gift ideas, nativity figurines, Christmas decorations and festive food. You can find regional specialities here, and you can also find arts and crafts from Russia, Canada and Poland! And that's not to forget the gingerbread and other delicacies, which you can take away or eat on the spot with a glass of mulled wine...

Hamburg

November 21 – December 23 Daily 11 am – 9 pm, Fri & Sat to 10 pm The Hamburg Town Hall Christmas Market is filled with hand-crafted Christmas decorations from the Erzgebirge region and looked after by woodcarvers from Tyrol, bakers form Aachen (producing their famous “printen” cookies on the scene) or gingerbread makers from Nuremberg and the pottery is made by artists from the Lausitz region. Silversmiths and many other artisans and craftsmen from all over Germany invite you to marvel, join in, taste or simply enjoy this fantastic atmosphere in Hamburg. Old-fashioned carousels bring a gleam to everyone's eyes, not just the children's. Hamburg has so much to offer during the festive season: you can enjoy a mug of glühwein on a lake Alster boat tour or you could visit a Christmas exhibition in one of the city's museums.

Strasbourg

Cologne

November 21 – December 23 Times TBC The aroma of baked apples, cinnamon biscuits and mulled wine will waft through the alleys, and many differently themed Christmas markets will invite people to stroll, shop and explore. The larger Christmas markets are held in downtown Cologne. The booths near Cologne Cathedral are arranged around a huge Christmas tree, next to which is a stage for a diverse programme of live music performances. At the "Heimat der Heinzel" (Home of the Heinzelmännchen) on Heumarkt, visitors will be thrilled to find a spectacular skating rink. The "Markt der Engel" (Angel Market) on Neumarkt will treat you to a magnificently shining sea of stars, while the "Nikolausdorf" (St. Nick’s Village) on Rudolfplatz will create a family-friendly atmosphere.

Prague

December 3 – January 4 2017 Times TBC Christmas markets (Vanocni trh) are a key ingredient of the festive magic in the Czech Republic, and the Prague Christmas markets are the most impressive. They light up the city, bringing locals and tourists together in a true 'winter wonderland' setting.

November 25 – December 31 Daily 9am - 7pm It was in Strasbourg in 1570 that the very first edition of the oldest Christmas market in Europe took place, then called the "Christkindelsmärik" (market of the Infant Jesus).

The main markets are held at the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square (5 minutes walk from each other). There are smaller markets at Republic Square, Havel's Market, on Kampa Island in the Lesser Town, and by St. George's Basilica at Prague Castle.

Since this time, Strasbourg has continued the tradition of a traditional, authentic, warm and generous Alsatian Christmas and these are all the reasons why "Strasbourg, the Capital of Christmas" continues to enjoy repeated success.

If you prefer to venture a little closer to home, then Bath has its own fantastic christmas markets that will sprinkle you with festive cheers as well as offer up some unique gifts that are sure to please.

property Pritchards: Bath's finest Estate Agents Established in 1785, Pritchards Estate Agents are Bath’s longest running independent estate agents and the premier choice for those seeking to buy or sell property in the city. With an unrivalled wealth of experience to draw upon, they know exactly what is required to achieve the very best results for their clients, providing professional advice and guidance every step of the way. At Pritchards, they consider themselves to be experts on the beautiful city of Bath as well as on the twists and turns of the housing market.

David MacKenzie Carter Jonas Post-referendum we are seeing a mixed picture. The market in London has suffered the most and while stock levels are healthy, the number of buyers registering has halved compared to last year. In other areas – and the north of England is especially notable – sales are performing well. Perhaps it is no coincidence that this reflects how these areas voted in the referendum. More likely, it relates to the proportion that investors occupy in the buying mix. London, and the counties closest to it, are traditionally favoured by investors, so when they wobbled, these markets felt it.

domestic buyers to see that there has never been a better time to buy.

The dedicated team understands that location is an integral part of the decision-making process when purchasing your dream property, and with their in-depth knowledge of Bath’s local areas, they can offer unrivalled advice and information on the location that might best suit your personal requirements.

The investment market tends to favour new homes, so once activity from investors picks up, we expect that to be reflected in the sales of new build units.

In fact, they pride themselves on their ability to treat all their customers as individuals, providing a bespoke service tailored to each and every client.

To be successful, sellers and residential developers must recognise that buyers in this market are discerning and they have a good source of property to choose from.

Thanks to their independent status, they are free to offer a personalised, hands-on approach to buying or selling your property with more time to focus on the clients’ needs and ensure they achieve the best possible outcome for each and every customer.

Good quality properties will sell well and those that do not generate as much interest will need to be priced accordingly.

We are already seeing renewed interest from overseas investors as the pound weakens, and low interest rates and bespoke lending will hopefully encourage domestic buyers to see that there has never been a better time to buy. Uncertainty breeds activity in the rental market and we are seeing this in our London and regional offices. The referendum may have delayed the summer market slightly, but once it arrived, properties started to get snapped up. The mid-market of 2-3 bed houses, sought by professionals and young families, is in particularly hot demand regionally. This is especially true in Bath. Unsurprising then that we are seeing a surge in activity from new home developers. Past experience tells us that the market will recover. We are already seeing renewed interest from overseas investors as the pound weakens, and low interest rates and bespoke lending will hopefully encourage

It is possible that sales properties that continue to stick may well be released into the rental market, easing the pent-up demand there. Ultimately the property market is looking for the three Cs: certainty, confidence and commitment. With new leadership in place, we have a degree of certainty now, but a lot rests with the banks. If our financial institutions believe in the market and are encouraged to lend, public sentiment will surely follow

The Pritchards team works tirelessly and year after year, their experience, preparation and diligence has produced top notch results; earning them the reputation of Bath’s finest estate agents. Running out of Ammo…

by Bath Building Society CEO and Chairman of the BSA, Dick Jenkins

"

In all my years involved in the housing market, I have never seen the Government so energised about trying to solve the house building shortfall.

"

Whilst arrears and repossessions rose, the level of stress on household budgets has been far less acute than in the previous recession, even though this has been a hard few years for many families. The Financial Crisis of 2008 onwards has been met by a very different policy response to the previous recession of 1989-1993. In that earlier recession, the crisis was made much worse for home owners because it was characterised by high interest rates and high levels of unemployment, a lethal combination which gave rise to record levels of arrears and home repossessions. Move the clock forward 20 or so years and the Bank of England; now independent from the Government, has been far more active in throwing everything but the kitchen sink into trying to stimulate the economy. Interest rates went from a norm position of 5-7% in the period before 2008 to just 0.5% in March 2009 and have stayed there since, except in the last couple of months when the Bank’s Base Rate has been cut even further to just one quarter of one percent. Not that the Bank has acted alone in this regard. Central Banks throughout the developed world have done the same and doubtless can be credited with staving off an even worse crisis.

Back in the summer, the Bank of England signalled that it may cut rates further still and announced a package of measures, including further squillions of pounds of cheap funding designed to keep lenders lending. But when we looks at those countries which have taken down rates to below zero (in which banks are charging customers to keep their money with them, rather than paying any interest at all on savings), the Governor of the Bank of England doesn’t appear to like what he sees and is telling the politicians that he has now pretty well pulled all of the levers that he has and it’s time for the Government to do the rest.

The Bank of England is running out of ammunition. So the Government is starting to think that borrowing money to invest in infrastructure could be a great way of stimulating the economy not least because large swathes of the electorate are clearly fed up with austerity. Besides, borrowing is cheap in the current climate, and; let’s face

it; there is no shortage of important things the Government could be spending money on. Like housing for instance. Every way you cut it; politically, economically or socially, the inability of Britain to build enough houses is a major problem. It has been calculated that Britain needs at least 250,000 new homes a year; the last year in which this number of new homes were built was some 40 years ago in the 1970’s. There are a number of obstacles which would need to be addressed to solve this problem, the planning system, freeing up the land market, the structure of incentives for developers who; acting rationally, tend to sit on land banks and are prone to boom and bust in a stop-go market. Solving the problem of finance for would be first time buyers has been a priority for the Government, and laudably so, but it’s only a part of the equation. In all my years involved in the housing market, I have never seen the Government so energised about trying to solve the house building shortfall. It’s a massive, complex task; 40 years of under investment won’t be sorted by Thursday teatime. Let’s just hope that it stays at the top of the political agenda long enough to make a difference.

lettings At the end of a turbulent year, what’s changed in Bath’s rental market? In 2016 uncertainty dominated, but catastrophe didn’t happen (yet). So what changes have we seen, and are there signs of problems to come? Across 2016 there was one factor that dominated the housing market (and just about everything else). First there was the slow build up, the increasingly tight polls and the dawning realisation that Remain might actually not win. Then the shock result. More recently there’s been an uneasy calm – first a bounce in confidence when the world didn’t in fact end, then a creeping anxiety. So what were the potential risks to the housing market from Brexit? The most obvious was dramatically lower house prices, which could mean fewer landlords, which could lead to rising rents.

Bath's rental market is 'Strong and bouyant' says Bath Property Lettings The rental market in Bath has remained as strong and buoyant as ever. At the beginning of the year, there was an influx of new landlords purchasing buy to lets in order to beat the stamp duty deadline.

schools we have to offer. In the same manner there has also been an influx of people choosing to commute to Bristol from Bath, because many deem the quality of life to be better in Bath.

A short term spurt of supply will not shift the fundamentals of a strong residential lettings market, which Bath is fortunate to have. Following this influx, there was a steady flow of properties coming onto the rental market as landlords started to rent their new purchases out. This influx did allow tenants more choice, but certainly didn’t result in an oversupply as they came onto the market fairly gradually. A short term spurt of supply will not shift the fundamentals of a strong residential lettings market, which Bath is fortunate to have.

In a recent study, Bath was found to be in the top five most expensive cities for rental prices in the UK as prices here continue to rise, behind Slough, Watford, Guildford and London. As house prices continue to rise many people in Bath are still unable to afford to buy, so they have no option but to rent instead. This in turn leads to individuals looking for more expensive, higher quality properties, as they know they will be there for some time. Therefore; as has been the case for some time, it is the quality properties which always prove most popular and which are guaranteed to be rented out most quickly. A large number of families from London have been relocating to Bath in recent years, as a result of the new train line and the excellent

During the summer months, as always, there was a slight dip in the number of tenants and landlords, but as has been the pattern in previous years, by late August it was clear that this was purely seasonal as the market picked up to be more buoyant than the previous year. Currently there are; as the trend has been, far fewer properties available than the number of applicants looking. With a surplus of prospective tenants in Bath, the inevitable knock-on effect is that more landlords want to let out their properties. Though recent months may have seen a slight increase in the number of landlords selling their properties, this has gone full circle and actually resulted in an increase in landlords purchasing these properties as new buy to lets. Despite high property prices in Bath, the lettings market offers a good yield and return. The market is as strong now as it has been in recent years, so there hasn’t been a better time to let out your property! www.bathpropertyletting.co.uk

What’s happened so far? Across the UK as a whole in 2016 rents reached around 3% higher than in 2015 – but since Brexit they’ve fallen by roughly 1%. That’s also been the case across the South-West region. And in Bath? Yes, house prices have dipped (a little). And yes, we’ve seen some landlords liquidate their investments and pull out of the rental market. Others planning to enter the market have put their plans on hold. But the uncertainty about house prices going forward means that some people who were planning to sell have waited and are renting out their homes instead – and that’s meant a small increase in numbers of rental properties available. As for people looking for places to rent, the levels have been as high as ever, if not higher. Here at HomeLets we had one of the busiest summers on record. In fact, the most obvious impact on levels of rents in Bath at least has been to stop them rising. Rents were rising early in the year, but subsequently have levelled off and remain steady, although we haven’t seen a drop. It appears that in the climate of uncertainty, landlords are unwilling to risk frightening off tenants. Will that change? Looking forward Right now it’s effectively cheaper to rent than it was six months ago, and that trend could continue. If the economy gets into serious trouble, landlords may not feel able to raise rents. On the other hand we’re likely to see fewer landlords – both because of housing market uncertainties, and because of the onslaught on landlords from higher stamp duty, cuts to mortgage tax relief and tougher lending criteria. That will likely restrict supply, putting upward pressure on rents. But it’s always worth remembering that Bath is not your typical housing market. House prices are unlikely to fall far, and investors know that. The rental market remains buoyant, and that’s good news for landlords; and good news for landlords is generally good news for renters. In 2017? Whatever happens to the UK, Bath will be sheltered from the worst of the impacts. homeletsbath.co.uk

Bath Riverside A Lasting Legacy Crest Nicholson’s Bath Riverside is an exciting new residential quarter of Bath that has totally transformed land that had been left derelict for over 25 years. Located on the south bank of the River Avon on what was the famous Stothert & Pitt, Engineers and Founders, the 44-acre, £400 million development is providing new homes and public spaces which enhance and compliment those in Bath. Providing a unique opportunity to buy a new home in the world-heritage city, work on the development will continue as it grows into a thriving place for people to live and enjoy their leisure time. An excellent example of inner city regeneration, it has shown what can be achieved with careful planning, commitment and passion. Enhancing the city’s reputation for having some of the most striking and sought after places to live in the UK, Bath Riverside is the perfect choice for anyone wanting to make the most of a unique chance to buy a studio, one or twobedroom apartment, penthouse, townhouse, villa or mews home by the river.

Award winning design pulls in the sales

Built using the distinct Bath stone, the development blends with the more traditional buildings that has made Bath famous around the world. With private sales now surpassing 350 properties, its private courtyards, landscaped

seating areas and contemporary design has received numerous plaudits, winning more than a dozen national awards.

that the historic city has to offer without using a car, while commuters can hop on a train from Bath Spa Station to Bristol or London.

The development also enjoyed its best ever month of sales in early Autumn.

With the assistance of Crest Nicholson, B&NES has restored the much loved Grade II Listed Victoria Bridge maintaining a vital link for pedestrians and cyclists across the river to Upper Bristol Road. The electrification of the Great Western rail line will also reduce travel time from Bath to London making the city very attractive for those happy to commute.

Aided by its location and easy, flat walk into the centre of Bath, the fact that house hunters can also see the range and spec of properties on offer, as opposed to off plan, has made it the development of choice for those looking for a new home in the region. Featuring high ceilings, large reception rooms and stunning bathrooms and kitchens, the properties at Bath Riverside have the added advantage of being completely brand new, meaning less maintenance and the convenience and ease of modern layouts.

Riverside opens the door to a new way of life

Mary Timlin, sales and marketing director at Crest Nicholson believes the development reflects the exciting, modern attitude of the city with all of the properties offering a specification and layout that better suits the needs of today’s discerning house hunter. She said: “Living at Bath Riverside realises a lifestyle many have dreamt about.

There are numerous reasons to move home. For some it’s the first step on the property ladder while for others it represents the opportunity to change the way they live and try something completely new.

“The beauty of the development is that is appeals to a mix of buyers. It is also ideal for those wanting to move out of their period property into a more modern home with similar high ceilings and large windows which flood the homes with light.

At Bath Riverside, sales have remained strong, with many of those who have chosen to live on the banks of the River Avon discovering a new lease of life that is far removed from what they were used to.

“Both the level of interest and recognition of Bath Riverside has been fantastic and we’re delighted with the role it has played in shaping and inspiring the transformation of this previously inaccessible part of Bath.”
