John Lydon by Jo Beer As I’ve mentioned a number of times through this column I love portrait art and have a number of examples in my home including Plymouth’s own celebrated Robert Lenkiewicz, for whom the foundation put on a terrific exhibition at Ocean Studios last month. In fact over the last few weeks I’ve seen some excellent work by local portrait artists including Simon Bennett, Dave Crocker and Jo Beer plus others who are more than keeping Lenkiewicz’s legacy very much alive. Simon was working on a stunning commission piece in the style of a Caravaggio mural whilst Dave was completing a life size canvas of local boxing champion Beth Warne. It was interesting too to see that Jo had decided to paint the punk icon Johnny Rotten,a.k.a. John Lydon at a time when 2 historic houses in London are to be preserved for future generations with a grade 2 listing simply because in the mid Seventies it was where the Sex Pistols lived and apparently covered the walls in anti-establishment graffiti. In a typically pompous manner academics from the University of London were claiming this graffiti to be more important than the tomb of Tutankhamen with Historic England and the Culture Secretary weighing in pronouncing that the ‘deconstruction of their art presents a layering of time and changing relations, this very archaeological record offers something visceral and immediate’.

What!, I remain constantly staggered by the pretentiousness of the London cultural elite who seek to convince me that Sid Vicious’s poisonous four letter words and badly drawn caricatures are now part of some major artistic movement. Famously it was Rotten who said ‘all we’re trying to do is destroy everything’ which to me sounds like the opposite of culture and heritage. Either way his iconic status ensured Jo sold her original and prints are now available at Kaya Gallery. On the local scene I must return again to Robert Lenkiewicz whose studios on Southside Street on the Barbican have been occupied by an enterprising group of artists under the banner of Comma 5, who are looking to set up working artists studios there, so do get along and support their funding raising initiatives. Staying on the Barbican this June the Victoria Sewart contemporary jewellery gallery celebrates 10 years of trading with a series of featured exhibitions, including work from jewellers who showcased their work 10 years ago. Given in that time that Vicky was diagnosed and overcame breast cancer it’s a real celebration of her tenacity to create a successful business during some tough times. Also on the Barbican for the month of May internationally renowned potter John Pollex is exhibiting at 45 Southside Gallery. John’s work is

Whatever the inspiration his pieces are simply beautiful and well worth a look. Also in Plymouth there are 2 fascinating art shows at Devonport Guildhall showcasing Liane Hocking in May and raising young star Sophie Johnson in June. Finally if you fancy a day out, up until 11th June there is a wonderful exhibition which I went to last week at the Penlee House Gallery in Penzance showing the work of Fred Hall one of the central figures of the Newlyn school art colony, another group who knew how to paint a portrait.

The Imagination Museum
The Imagination Museum
An early summer of imagination at City Museum and Art Gallery You can let your imaginations run free at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery over the next few weeks as well as see an exciting new artwork. Here Is Where We Came From
From Saturday 7 May the first part of a new Plymouth Arts Centre commission will go on display on the Museum‘s balcony.
on offer. ‘Pick Up and Go’ activities run during opening hours on Saturday 28 May, Tuesday 31 May, Friday 3 June and Saturday 4 June. These self-directed butterfly-themed activities are inspired by the natural history collections. Saturday 28 May is also the date for Wild About Plymouth’s ‘Natural History Curators’ event. Look at pickled creatures, peer at hundreds of pinned insects, see some live taxidermy and create your own mini-beast!
Why not come and meet eccentric tour guides Mildred, Henry and Harriet? Watch as they bring objects to life through words and movement in a series of unique 30-minute promenade performances. ‘Here is Where We Came From’ is delivered in partnership with the Arts and Heritage Service and sees artist Holly Davey commemorate Plymouth’s wartime experiences whilst taking inspiration from Lee Miller‘s photograph of a bombed out London chapel. Working with objects, collection and memory, Davey will remove the items from a large glass case and fill it with rubble - turning part of a building that survived the Blitz into a bombsite that never was.
Step back in time
Visitors can ‘Meet Nurse Phyllis’, a WWI voluntary nurse on Saturday 14 and 28 May. This free interactive event is delivered in partnership with the Scratch It Theatre Company and will take people back in time with stories and historical objects.
Half term fun
During half term there are lots of fun things

Creative activities
On Wednesday 1 June visitors can make paper ‘Ruffs and Cuffs’ inspired by the days of Drake and Shakespeare. On Thursday 2 June, they can work with guest artist Rachel Griffin to make ‘Memory Boxes’. These sessions are bookable with a small charge of £2.50 per child. Half term finishes with family-friendly animation ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’. This free screening is part of a series of films the Museum is running to mark the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare.
Lunchtime Talks
As the nation prepares to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday, Alan Read looks at some of the most remarkable and resonant images from her reign (3 May). Other talks topics during May include Dame
Agnes Weston, the amazing woman who cofounded The Sailors' Rests (10 May), the various proposals that have existed over the years for an alternative airport for Plymouth (17 May), forgotten soldiers of the Boer War (24 May) and the Battle of Jutland (31 May). In June and early July presentations will look at the short, yet memorable life of Pocahontas (7 June), the story behind the American flag (14 June), the ’Here Is Where We Came From’ installation (21 June), Plymouth’s post-war art collecting (28 June) and the Beatles (5 July).
Art Bites and Films
The Museum’s regular programme of informal ‘Art Bites’ also continues throughout the coming weeks. Presentations will look at selected portraits from the ‘In the Frame’ exhibition (11 May and 8 June), the ‘Secret Weapons’ section of the ‘War Games’ exhibition, which explores the use of toys for propaganda (25 May), and the latest treasure and contemporary craft acquisitions (22 June). The Shakespeare 400 anniversary will also be marked again on Saturday 21 May with a free screening of Ralph Fiennes‘ powerful adaptation of ‘Coriolanus‘.
The Imagination Museum
Finally, on Saturday 2 July visitors why not come and meet eccentric tour guides Mildred, Henry and Harriet? Watch as they bring objects to life through words and movement in a series of unique 30-minute promenade performances. ‘The Imagination Museum’ has been created by Katie Green in collaboration with writer Anna Selby. It features original music by Max Perryment and is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. The origins of Father's Day There is a school of thought that believes Father's Day is a relatively recent concept, conceived to compliment the already popular Mother's Day and celebrate the paternal side of parenting. It may, therefore, surprise you to know that scholars believe the earliest Father's Day message came from a young boy called Elmesu, who lived 4000 years ago in Babylon (modern day Iraq), and carved a message on a cardSpa , outisofa clay, wishing Babylonian father Gaia luxury spa sethis within the grounds health Hall, and aDevon. long life. ofgood Boringdon A Grade I listed 16th century country manor house hotel, on the edge Dayinremained annual appreciation ofFather's Dartmoor, Plymouth.anThe largest spa in in several countries over the world but only the South West, Gaiaall Spa promotes natural became popular Western culture duringtothe wellbeing taking a in personalised approach early twentieth century. Having gained the necessary support from trade groups that may benefit from the celebration (tie manufacturers, tobacconists etc..) and from 1938, the Father's Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men's Wear Retailers to consolidate and systematize the commercial promotion, Father's Day celebrations became more widespread.

Jay Rayner: The Pen is mightier than the chord
Renowned restaurant critic, MasterChef judge and sometime jazz pianist, Jay Rayner, has put down his pen and is currently on tour performing his 'A Night Of Food and Agony' and 'My Dining Hell' shows. The former Restaurant Critic of the Year, entertainingly combines storytelling and acerbic wit with a hitherto hidden talent as a musician. Craig Maplesden caught up with Jay to chat about his passion for food, jazz and floral shirts. Many of our readers will know you as The Observer restaurant critic and one of the judges on MasterChef, but will not be aware of your musical talents. When did your love of music and especially Jazz begin? I’ve been playing the piano for nearly 40 years, just not very well. I think I started falling in love with jazz as a kid. As a family we would watch the great Hollywood musicals which were screened on BBC2 on Saturday afternoons, and many of the great jazz tunes started their life in those musicals.
coming off stage and shrugging at each other as if it were just another day at the office. I never want it to feel like that so by professional standard we don’t gig that much. This year we’ll probably perform no more than a couple of dozen times. There is a general perception that restaurant critics only focus on the negative and give less than glowing reviews. However, your critiques seem to be more positive than not. Do you think this is a reflection of the standard of eateries around?
During the Dining Hell half of the show I will ask the audience to tweet their reviews of me and then I read those out at the beginning of the second half. It’s an interesting exercise because they suddenly realise that what they say will be presented to the whole audience – as my reviews are on a bigger scale – and they have to think about it. So when did you start playing the piano? I think I had my first lesson when I was 10 and my last classical one when I was 12. It would take a good few years until I was in my twenties before I started getting some tuition in jazz and blues. Your band is full of really talented musicians, including your wife who has the most amazing voice. Is there a danger that your 'hobby' could soon become a 'big thing'? Absolutely not, because we’re determined it won’t. It’s a very special part of our life, and we want it to stay that way. We both live in fear of
20 woinplymouth
It’s a show of two halves. My Dining Hell is essentially stand up comedy about awful restaurants. The negative reviews are the smallest part of what I do – amounting to fewer than a fifth of my output in any one year – but they are the ones people remember. So it’s a journey through the landscape of awfulness using a whole bunch of audio visual tools as a kind of second performer on stage. And just to balance things up I read from a few terrible reviews of my own work. There’s time for a quick Q&A session before the interval. Then afterwards it’s an hour of cracking jazz, with songs both about food and drink and which play on my life growing up with a mother, Claire Rayner, who was an agony aunt, because a lot of good jazz songs sound like letters to agony aunts. In between the songs I tell some cracking stories, a few of them filthy, about my life with Claire because I never really spoken about that before What is it like touring as a group and when you go out for a post show meal, what are the reactions of the restaurants you visit like?
I think it’s down to the fact that I don’t want to sit through a bad meal. I really don’t go searching for the bad ones. They’re like colds and car crashes. They’re something that happen to me. Generally over half my reviews – 25 out of 50 – will be completely positive. Another 15 or so will be middling. Leaving just nine or 10 that are negative. But are there more and better places in Britain? Yes, absolutely. But there’s always space for improvement.
With the group there’s very little time for that. For an evening show we’ll be sound checking at 5.30pm and we won’t be done with the show until 10pm at which time we’re heading home. Recently though, I realised that the backstage catering – usually sandwiches and crisps – wasn’t what you would expect of the Jay Rayner Quartet. So I’m making more of an effort to get good stuff sent in from local restaurants wherever we happen to be.
You are currently touring with your A Night Of Food and Agony and My Dining Hell shows. Can you tell us a little about what we can expect from the shows themselves.
The 'My Dining Hell' element of the show serves up some fantastic anecdotes from your many reviews. What are the biggest 'No No's' when Jay Rayner comes into your restaurant?
T & C's Apply - Valid until 31/10/2016 (only one Voucher Per Visit)
food and drink It’s not about me. It’s about anybody. The big ones are making sure I’m offered a drink and have a menu in my hand immediately, and not performing service like it’s something you learnt from a book. Oh and for god sake please serve the food on plates, not on shovels, or slates or in mini chip pan fryers. As a renowned critic, how do you react to critique of your own reviews/shows?
Parker for the one liners, Dita Von Teese for the glamour, Fats Waller for the music and appetite, and Ella Fitzgerald to join Fats when he hits the piano.
Favourite tipple?
Pub or Restaurant?
If it’s one spirit it has to be vodka. My favourite cocktail has to be the very butch-sounding Twinkle: champagne, vodka, elderflower cordial, a spritz of lemon oil. As Dorothy Parker said of the Martini, they’re like breasts. One is not enough, three is too many.
Here are some quick-fire questions:
Restaurant
Pen or Piano?
Not only is it fine, I invite it. If they’re just bitchy it doesn’t go down well.
Which Master Chef winner impressed you the most?
Always the pen. I am a writer first, second, third and ninth.
Tim Anderson, now a panellist on the Kitchen Cabinet, the show I chair for BBC Radio 4. He has doggedly followed one path - Japanese soul food – and does it exceptionally well. His restaurant Nanban, in Brixton, is terrific. It also happens to be close to my house.
What do you do for downtime?
As to general reviews of my work, I have absolutely no problem with it. I’ve been writing books for 25 years and I welcome all and any critical comment. How much attention I pay to it is then up to me.
Hidden 'food' gem? I have no such thing. If I find somewhere brilliant I always tell everyone all about it in my column Recent discovery (ingredient/dish)?
Do you think there are too many Head Chefs try too hard to deliver a plate of food for the 'art' of cooking, rather than to deliver taste and value for the customer? No, I really don’t. It’s very rare that I come across a chef who seems to be cooking for stars and hero worship rather than customers. It does happen, but for the most part they realise they’re running a business and if they don’t take care of the punters they’re screwed. If you were to host a dinner party, which 5 people (dead or alive) would you invite?
I’m constantly mucking about but I’m rather taken with smoked paprika right now. I’ve used it to come up with a seasoning mix that makes almost anything taste like smokey bacon crisps. What could be better? Food heaven? A plate of charcoal grilled spare ribs from a Portuguese piri prir house on Brixton Hill near where I live called The Luanda Grill. Food hell?
Peter Ustinov for the wit and anecdotes, Dorothy
Heinz Baked Beans. Hate them. Always have.
Apart from going to the piano which is both my friend and adversary, I’m in the gym four to five times a week. It’s necessary to stop myself becoming the size of a house, but it’s also very relaxing. What music do you listen to? An awful lot of jazz: Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz and so on. I can’t write while listening to anything with a lyric so this does the job for me. Finally, how many floral shirts do you have? It’s about ten I think, though I wear them less than I used to. We all go in phases. Maybe I’m finally growing up. Many thanks for taking the time out to speak to us and best of luck with the shows. Captivating Catalonia Food and Wine Tour of Catalonia: part one The autumn afternoon sun shone as I arrived in Barcelona and headed for my downtown hotel. Easily finding my bearings I headed for the first event of many planned for a Wine and Food orientated experience in this Spanish Mediterranean outpost known as Catalonia. I navigated the trams with ease and headed downtown to the annual Wine Fair showing over 200 wines in the middle of the square to the head of the magnificent Arc del Triomf in the late afternoon.
But it was the next few days that were to open my eyes to what Catalonia really had to offer. For those of you with an interest in food, wine, historic monuments plus a myriad of stunning and varied vistas this might just be the new place in your gastronomic itinerary?
region) of Emporda perhaps little known in the UK but full of promise and quirky quality. Our first of many treats was to experience the architectural genius of Celler Brugarol at the Mas Bell-lloc (beautiful place) cut into the red soiled landscape with huge staves of linked rusting steel inviting you down its mysterious pathway into a modern winery situated mainly underground. It was a cross between middle earth mystery and a giant Richard Serra sculpture (Guggenheim, Bilbao) extolling form and texture amongst indigenous flowers, shrubs and trees. I couldn’t help thinking how it might melt into the landscape in future years. As we marvelled at this innovative winery the wine was being opened and offered to our tasters. The grapes were grown in selected soils and climes as the undulation of the estate enabled an eclectic mix to be planted. Malvasia, Xarel-o and Muscatel grapes were for the whites plus Cabernets, Monastrell, Grenache and Carinena for the reds. The wines offered for tasting were made with minimal handling allowing the plots of soil to express the terrior of the estate. Needles to say the wines had real character, depth of flavour and quality abound! Do search out this estate for an ethereal glimpse of a winery very close to nature.
Our journey started with a walking tour of Barcelona taking in sites that stun and the corners of the city that surprise and delight as the daring and colourful modern architecture nestles alongside classical baroque styles with a sprinkling of Roman thrown in for good measure. It’s all here within close proximity of the blue Mediterranean Sea.
On to our hotel (Hotel Terraza) about 70k east to the town of Roses was a beach Spa hotel situated on a curve of a huge bay allowing us to trace our coastal journey with the twinkle of village lights along the way. Regional dishes were wheeled out including Mussels, lovely salads and delicate desserts. Our long day was fading and we retired.
The atmosphere was everywhere as we joined in the wonderful bustle of this major city; streets small and mysterious to fast-paced boulevards and the ubiquitous trams zig zaging to the outskirts of the city. Museums and restaurants were our quarry as we were expertly guided to places that were a feast for the eyes. Suddenly it was 2pm and lunch called! We were directed to the Hotel Cotton House that had just undergone a complete restoration turning it into a major gastronomic venue of sumptuous proportion. It was certainly reminiscent of great and grand dining but with a casualness that indicated sheer professionalism.
Up early with our colleagues and eager to get on the road to sample wines at La Vinyeta winery app. 22k to the North East of the coast. This is the base of the Pyrenees showing different soils and climate pointing to different styles of wine. On arrival we were invited to venture into the vineyards to see how the poor soils were tamed by the vines, olive groves and fruit trees enabling seasonal bounty to be harvested. La Vinyeta was a comparatively new winery producing wines of exceptional quality ranging from rich whites to full-on reds with the addition of brilliant dessert wines all offered with individually crafted bottles, colour and stylistic presentations throughout. Impressive and confident, we were all impressed with this modern winery in the hills.
After lunch it was onward to the eastern coastal region known as Costa Brava our journey showing us just what to expect as we hugged the coast for 100k to taste wines at Palamos. This is a region in the DO (authoritative wine

Families were dominant within the carnival atmosphere of the grand show. Mixing and milling about with a sort of free Mediterranean spirit, the seniors of the families were tasting and buying from whoever they fancied. It would be hard to imagine a nicer event for me to kick off with as I tasted Cava, Costers del Segre (red, white and rose), Tarragona and the fabled Priorat with true abandon.

Plymouth History Festival 2016
The 2016 Plymouth History Festival will run from Saturday 7 May to Sunday 5 June and has over 100 different events on its programme. This is the fourth year in a row that the month long celebration of Plymouth’s history has taken place. The festival, which is coordinated by the City Council’s Arts and Heritage Service, includes exhibitions and displays, special events, family activities, talks, walks, tours, music, performance and film. Exhibitions and Displays
Exhibitions will explore subjects such as the Blitz, Charles Darwin, the Battle of Jutland and the history of Plymouth’s sports and sporting personalities. Others include Rembrandt, Reynolds, shipwrecks, portraits, the use of plants in medicine and the chance to explore places such as Saltram, Plympton and North Prospect in more detail. A new work of art will also be revealed at the City Museum and Art Gallery at the start of the festival. ‘Here Is Where We Came From’ by artist Holly Davey has been commissioned by Plymouth Arts Centre and delivered in partnership with the Arts and Heritage Service. The work commemorates the Plymouth Blitz and has been inspired by a photograph of a bombed out chapel in London by Lee Miller.
People can rediscover some of the better-known aspects of Plymouth’s history such as the Blitz and the Victorian period. They will also be able to explore some of the lesser-known aspects of the city‘s heritage including its LGBT history and Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s proposed Eldad railway station. Locations will take people from Stonehouse Creek to Swilly, the Laira to the Tamar Valley, Devonport to Drake‘s Place and more.
Edwardian Plymouth, Spiritualism in Victorian times, Devonport Dockyard’s Women Workers, the Marine Biological Association, the wreck of the Dutton and the centenary of the Battle of Jutland also feature. Talks are set to take place in venues as varied as the Museum and Art Gallery, St Andrew‘s Church, Ford Park Cemetery, the Athenaeum, Plymouth University and the Devonport Naval Heritage Centre.
Talks
The talks on this year’s festival programme cover topics as diverse as Dame Agnes Weston who co-founded the Sailor‘s Rests, Lawrence of Arabia, forgotten soldiers of the Boer War, historical mining landscapes, the 1970s and the history of roller skating from the mid 1800s to the present day!

Getting to see behind the scenes or explore places in more detail is always a great way to discover more about the history of a place, and the festival includes a series of tours that will enable people to do just that. From Saltram to the Synagogue and from Buckland Abbey to the archives at the College of St Mark and St John, there are some really interesting places to visit. The Royal Citadel, the old Jewish Cemetery, the old Plympton Grammar School and the Prysten House also feature in the many tours that are available, as do a variety of churches in locations such as Devonport, Plympton St Maurice, the city centre and Stoke Damerel.

Celebrating Heritage
None of this would be possible without a great deal of hard work by the Arts and Heritage Service and the range of partner venues, local history societies and enthusiastic individuals who contribute events to the festival each year. “Once again a large number of organisations and people have come together to create a really impressive programme for the 2016 History Festival,” says Nicola Moyle, Head of Arts and Heritage for Plymouth. “Just like the last three years, I’m sure this year will provide people of all ages with lots of opportunities to celebrate and learn more about our heritage - as well as highlight just how fascinating Plymouth’s history is.”

Summerskills Brewery will once again produce a limited beer which will be available at a number of historic local pubs while the festival is running. Special collectible beer mats and photographic displays will also be available for people to enjoy at participating venues.
A series of Family History Helpdesks will also be on offer to help people kick start their genealogy research, as well learn as how to make the best use of the archives at the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office.

Funky Llama Festival burst on to the Hoe for the first time last summer and it’s back again this June with even more extraordinary bands, DJs and dance artists from all across the UK. The day features some fantastic acts including Lizzie Emeh, a London-based soul artist working with Heart n Soul. Lizzie launched her debut album in 2009 and made history as the first solo artist with a learning disability to release an album of her own songs to the general public. We are so pleased to have Lizzie joining the line-up for this year’s festival. The festival caters for all tastes with music from the welsh pop punk band Straight Jacket Legends and the house and hip hop inspired electronica artist The Femebot, to The Majestic, a rock reggae band from London.

A gentle stroll around Buckland Abbey reveals many treasures inside and out. Seas of colour are starting to appear in the woodlands as Buckland’s much anticipated bluebells burst into flower. Doug our ranger recommends heading out on the red estate walk to see the bluebells at their best, along with views of the Tavy valley and the smells of wild garlic along Cot Lane. Buckland’s bluebells are traditionally quite late, so we anticipate them looking their best towards the middle of May – but do keep an eye on our website and social media for updates. Another great way to see the highlights of spring around the Buckland estate is by joining our rangers for a guided walk off the beaten track. Walks set off on Wednesday 11, Sunday 15 and Wednesday 25 May at 1pm (admission charges apply, members free). Half-term is packed full of outdoor fun this May. Learn about the art of making charcoal and whittle yourself a spoon with the rangers at Cot Lane from 28-29 May. There’s also an opportunity to create some wild pieces of art out of natural objects with the Naturemake team from 3-5 June. More details of our jam-packed May half-term activities are available on our website. Admission and activity charges apply for some events. On rainy days, the Abbey is full of tale awaiting to be discovered. A newly identified early portrait of Francis Drake has recently gone on display and will be hanged at Drake’s former home for the next few months; alongside existing treasures such as Drake’s legendary drum and our Rembrandt self-portrait. If you love Buckland as much as we do – have you ever considered volunteering? If you’re interested in joining the Buckland Abbey family, please do pop along to our volunteering open day on Monday 6 June from 11am-2pm. There’s lots of ways you can help, be it as a guide within the Abbey at the weekends or as driver of one of the visitor buggies, the ways to get involved are endless. Buckland’s open every day from 10.30am-5.30pm – look forward to seeing you soon.

As you dive deeper into the Aquarium, our Eddystone Reef tank will blow your mind with the UK’s largest single-tank viewing panel (it’s like a fishy cinema screen). If British beauties aren’t enough, our Atlantic Ocean tank – home to large nurse sharks, sand tiger sharks and our new lemon sharks – is the deepest in the UK, with 2.5million litres of water. The Atlantic Ocean tank is home to three species of ray – if you see them, don’t forget to take a selfie! We’ve also got fantastic smaller displays, from lionfish to family favourites such as clownfish and some very, very smiley pufferfish. To finish your marine adventure off, our Great Barrier Reef tank is home to Snorkel the loggerhead turtle, our most famous character,
who washed up at Sennen Cove and suffers from epilepsy. Snorkel is also joined by two new zebra sharks that have a really interesting story as they have no father. education With the exam period just around the corner and with parents looking at what path their children will take on the road to learning, we take a look at what some of Plymouth's schools have to offer.
We highlight some outstanding results, recent additions as well as advice to help you with one of the most important decisions of your childs life.
For Life, Not School, We Learn Founded in 1874, Plymouth High School for Girls is a State selective Grammar school that builds on a long tradition of excellence. Our motto “For Life Not School We Learn” is still relevant today and is at the heart of what drives us forward. It is reflected in the diversity of achievement across the school, which we proudly celebrate. In years 7 to 11 we have 600 girls on roll. Our Sixth Form is open to both girls and boys and has grown in numbers to over 200.
One hundred and fifty years of proving quality education at Notre Dame This year, Notre Dame secondary school in Derriford, celebrates one hundred and fifty years of providing quality education for Plymouth girls. The school was founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1865 and is part of a worldwide network of schools that welcomes all those who want to learn in a supportive, caring and aspirational environment. Today the school has a strong record of academic success. It has gained some of the best GCSE and A Level results in the city by offering a broad and enriching curriculum that stretches the gifted and supports those who need extra time. The school expects the best effort and the best standards from all community members because everyone is totally committed to achievement. Notre Dame is a learning community – and a successful comprehensive school that values all achievements.
2015 were equally strong, with GCSEs again seeing impressive performances. Notre Dame was judged by Ofsted in its latest inspection as being a ‘good’ school and a Diocesan Inspection rated us as ‘outstanding’. Girls from across Plymouth and beyond enjoy what the inspectors recognised as a ‘very strong family and faith atmosphere’ and are supported in their progress because ‘relationships between teachers and students are excellent’. This, together with ‘excellent spiritual, moral, social and cultural development’ means Notre Dame students are ready to make the most of their futures. In the past year, the school has seen students leave to take up a whole host of opportunities, including Oxford University, starting employment, or beginning apprenticeships.
Plymouth High offers a strong, supportive community, providing a sense of warmth and welcome within a safe, stimulating environment. We aim for our students to be confident, creative and caring young adults who are knowledgeable, inquiring thinkers and innovators. We believe in the 3 Rs of respect, resilience and responsibility and all our students, from the time they enter the school in year 7, are given opportunities to develop as leaders. We support every one of our students whatever their unique gifts, talents or needs so that they can achieve the highest standards academically whilst developing excellence in areas of their choice; our outcomes at both GCSE and A Level are indicative of this. Students move on from Plymouth High ready to take their place as active citizens in a global society with a lifelong love of learning. Prospective year 7 students (entry September 2017) and their families are invited to join us at an Open Day event, Thursday 23rd June, 2.00pm and 6.00pm. Year 4 and 5 students are welcome to attend. A welcome address will be given by Headteacher Mary Utton at 2.00pm and 6.00pm, each followed by a tour of the school offering visitors the opportunity to meet our students and staff.
The school expects the best effort and the best standards from all community members because everyone is totally committed to achievement. In 2014 Notre Dame was the best performing comprehensive school in the city for GCSE results. It also gained official recognition from the Department for Education for being one of the top 90 in England showing the greatest improvement in the percentage of students achieving five or more A*-C grade GCSEs, including English and Maths. education
Advice on Open Days For parents, it doesn't matter if your child is making their first tentative steps into education or choosing a final University place; the decision of where your child will be educated is very important, not just to you, but more so to your child. Open Days give any parent (and child) the opportunity to witness at first hand the running of a school, its teachers, its pupils and its facilities. Many parents will look at league tables, Ofsted reports and make their judgements based solely on results rather than what is most most important: will your child be happy? Depending on the school, Open Days can be either very relaxed affairs, some can be almost military in their agenda and precision, many can be very staged as if the actors are putting on a performance to potential sponsors. Regardless of which Schools you choose to view, like finding a home you want your child to grow up in, it is always good to look at a few to give you an idea of similarities, differences and generally how staff and pupils behave.

Our vision is simple; to ensure that every young person makes the best possible academic progress they can, whilst developing the personal skills and qualities that will help them to confidently take their place in society. Visitors to Coombe Dean comment upon the warm welcome they receive from all school members and the calm and purposeful atmosphere they experience when moving through the school. Also noted are the fabulous facilities which the school is constantly seeking to upgrade. Two consecutive Ofsted inspections designated Coombe Dean as 'Outstanding'. A recent survey of parents and students unanimously supported this opinion. Some quotes are included below: I am happy at Coombe Dean because the teachers trust you, they listen and they help you when you are in trouble (Year 8)

If you are on a 'warts and all' tour, look around the classrooms, look at the work, not just the ones at eye level and in the centre of the wall but those that are on the periphery. This may sound obvious, but make sure you take your child. Remember it will be them who will be working and learning in this environment so they need to feel comfortable. Whilst you are at the Open Day, try and speak to as many people as you can. Parents who have children already at the school, they may have a few home truths about the school or its teachers. Talk to current pupils as they tend to use words that aren't false or scripted. If you are on a 'warts and all' tour, look around the classrooms, look at the work, not just the ones at eye level and in the centre of the wall but those that are on the periphery. This will give you an idea of the different levels of ability. During your Open Day you may well be given a talk by the Head or one of the senior staff. They may well tell you that they are a school that has many after school clubs and is a real part of the community but look for signs that back them up. Look at noticeboards, they will tell you how involved the school is. It is always a good idea to try and speak to a senior member of staff (or ideally the head) on a one-to-one basis. You can then get an idea of the schools vision and where it may or may not fit in with your child's future. Open Days are a fantastic way to see first hand the running of a school and meet those who will lead and inspire your child. Most importantly of all, when it comes to deciding your child's future. Trust your instincts.

The demand for work ready students is higher than ever! Throughout the country there is an everincreasing demand for highly skilled, workready employees. A report conducted by EngineeringUK highlights the need to double the number of annual recruits into engineering by 2020 to meet expected demand. This is why we feel the work we’re doing at UTC Plymouth and many other UTC’s across the country is so vital to the sector.
University, we are able to put you onto the next path in your career, whether its work or further education. Our pathways incorporate a unique UTC package that equips students with the employability skills including 5 outcomes:
UTC Plymouth is a science and engineering specialist college for 14-19 years olds, which has the aim to educate and train the most technically minded students in the region so they can progress into higher education or head straight into employment.
3. Digital Literacy
1. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving. 2. Communication and Collaboration.
4. Creativity and Innovation 5. Leadership and Personal Development.
"
The relationship that has developed between UTC Plymouth and The Wrigley Company has been valuable for both ourselves and the students that we have met. The fantastic facilities and culture at the college have given these young adults an opportunity to learn and grow and this has resulted in us being able to start to recruit the next generation of talented associates Dominic Jenkins, Engineering Manager, Wrigleys into our business.
"
Just like other schools, we teach traditional core subjects, however what makes us different is we place a greater emphasis on STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths), offering a practical education alongside a classroom one. This is why we feel our students are better equipped to handle the world of work and thrive in their chosen field. UTC Plymouth provides a unique learning experience, allowing students to choose from a number of pathways including GCSE’s, A Levels, and BTEC’s, in addition to a wide range of extracurricular activities. With our links to some of the region’s biggest employers, our Royal Navy affiliation and our partnership with Plymouth

With our first set of students leaving us last summer after opening our doors in 2013, we celebrated an overall progression rate of 96%. That means only 4% of the year group didn’t either enter higher education, employment or secure an apprenticeship. Providing our students with relevant and excellent work experience with the help of our employer partners, we will continue to grow our adult culture within the college and prepare students for the working world. With two Open Evenings left this academic year why not pop along to one and see if UTC Plymouth could be the best place for you to continue your education. It’s a great opportunity
for you to have a guided tour of our facilities, visit our state-of-the-art workshops and to talk with current students and teachers about life at UTC. You can visit us on the 19th May at 5:30pm or alternatively on the 16th June at 5:30pm, which you can register for on our website. However if you can’t make those dates and are still interested in the college, call us on 01752 284250 and we will try to arrange a 1:1 tour with one of our team. Be Your Best at Lipson
We all want the best education possible for our children. Above all else, we want them to fulfil their potential and be happy.
When you are considering which schools to look at for your children, of course you are going to hear lots about how each school puts its pupils first and how dedicated to academic success they are. It will be tricky to assess what these statements really mean for you and your family.
feel the minute you walk through our doors. At Lipson, our learners become part of a family not just a school. This is a family environment in which everyone has a voice and where everyone is valued as an individual on the one hand, but expected to make a worthwhile contribution to that family on the other. On a daily basis, we are sharing with our young people our commitment to saying, “we instead of me.”
At Lipson, our learners become part of a family not just a school. This is a family environment in which everyone has a voice and where everyone is valued as an individual on the one hand, but expected to make a worthwhile contribution to that family on the other. You will need to delve a bit deeper and get under the skin of the headlines. When you start to explore Lipson Co-operative Academy, we think that you will find that this really is a school which holds each and every child centre stage. Not only that, you will find that the underlying ethos is one of shared co-operative values producing happy, confident learners who are enjoying the fruits of their success, with smiles on their faces. What are these co-operative values? We would be delighted if you would come and visit us and experience for yourself what we mean when we say we hold mutual respect, equality, responsibility, honesty, openness, democracy and care at our heart, each and every day. We know you will be impressed when you see the results we are achieving by working in this way. The School’s Commissioner recently highlighted the value added performance as being in the top 4 in the country and praised Principal Steve Baker and his energetic staff. This is an Academy pulsating with excitement, energy and self-belief where learners, teachers and parents not only believe in value driven education but actually live it. These values are teaching our young people to respect one another, be socially responsible, caring individuals in a democratic, tolerant atmosphere – something we are confident you will see and

Another aspect of our family environment is the use of innovative Guilds, which pupils join after consultation whilst they are still at primary school. Every pupil is part of a Guild; each one has a specialist focus. Children nervous at starting a new school are supported by a pastoral system right from day one. At Lipson, the embodiment of co-operation and working together really is encouraging our young people to aspire to great things and to be the very best they can, but most of all they are happy and as a consequence, successful. Whether our learners are studying for academic or vocational qualifications, Lipson’s passion for its values encourages teachers to give children dedicated and timely feedback at all stages of their work, with personalised plans and support to make improvements. These same energetic teachers handle modest class sizes, with good levels of pastoral and support staff. Our continued investment in the school’s facilities is paying off in improving success rates and recognition of our good practice. We believe that there is nothing in this world as fulfilling as seeing your child reach their full potential. We look forward to welcoming you to Lipson and to one of our Open Events in the near future.
Free Schools allow new schools to be set up in the style of academies with 24 such schools opening their doors in September 2011. Free Schools will have the same freedom as Academies, with funding coming directly from Westminster, semi-independent and outside of local authority control, with the freedom to vary the school day, terms, the curriculum and teachers' pay and conditions. Anyone can propose to set up a Free School including the likes of charities, universities, businesses, educational groups, teachers and groups of parents. These schools will attract the same 'per pupil' funding from the government as a local school and have been created to improve choice and raise standards as well as offer healthy competition to already established schools.
Anyone can propose to set up a Free School including the likes of charities, universities, businesses, educational groups, teachers and groups of parents.
There has been concern that the weird and the wonderful can now be educating your child in whichever way they feel. Fortunately this is not the case. Each proposer will have to adhere to, and pass, a 'fit and proper' persons test scrutinised over by Ofsted. So stringent are the criteria for setting up a Free School, that 90% of applications are turned down. Although Free Schools offer an opportunity for teachers, parents and sponsors to set up their own educational centre, the massive set up costs, time and effort that atr incurred are causing many ideas to remain on the drawing board. The opinion on Free Schools is divisive with those working in the education sector, split between those who believe the policy brief that they will 'promote higher standards, better integration and fairer chances especially for children from the most deprived backgrounds' and those who believe it to be the absolute antithesis.
to the vision of the school is its partnership with a number of local healthcare educators and practitioners who have been key in formulating the unique and innovative curriculum.

The name Scott College was chosen after wide consultation with students, staff and our studio school partners. A bust of the famous Plymouth explorer Robert Falcon Scott has been the centrepiece of the entrance to Stoke Damerel Community College for many years. “Scott College was the clear winner,” said Stoke Damerel principal Carol Hannaford.“Many people remember the name of Scott Hospital with that clear link to medicine and health. “Choosing the name of such a renowned adventurer also resonates with the studio school’s spirit of discovery while marking its links to its sponsor school.”
RESPONSIBLE YOUR BE ST Find out more about Plymouth's newest studio school Scott Medical and Health College - sponsored by Stoke Damerel Community College - is a small school which will train the healthcare and medical professionals of the future. Preparing for your future with Plymouth College of Art Plymouth College of Art is an independent art school, run by artists and designers for artists and designers. We’re here to help you tap into your full potential and prepare you for a professional career in the world’s thriving creative and cultural industries.
It’s easy to see examples of the work that our students create. Look out for Gus by Luke Sims, Steine by Michael Stroud and Je Ne Suis Pas Charlie by Tarig Elmakki, Russell Cleave and Paul Chanter at Plymouth Film Festival 2016, from 13 to 15 May.
91% of Plymouth College of Art graduates from 2013 and 2014 are either employed or engaged in further study. What’s creative education really worth?
Costume design for film and the stage
The creative industries contribute over £80 billion per year to the UK economy and provide employment for over 1.8 million people. That’s nearly £9.6million per hour generated in the UK by the creative industries.
If you wanted something more physical and hands on, you might be interested in our BA (Hons) Costume Production and Associated Crafts programme. 3rd year Costume student Jerry Moore has just returned from an inspirational two week placement at the prestigious Royal Shakespeare Company, which has played host to the likes of Sir Patrick Stewart, Dame Judi Dench and Alan Rickman.
In fact, according to the latest Government statistics, British films, video games, crafts, publishing and digital media are taking a leading role in driving the UK’s economic recovery. Are there jobs waiting for creative arts students? 91% of Plymouth College of Art graduates from 2013 and 2014 are either employed or engaged in further study. From fashion designers and freelance photographers to animators, graphic designers and concept artists for cutting edge computer games, there’ll be plenty of career choices available after you graduate. What kind of creative courses could I study? If you’re interested in film, you could start with our BA (Hons) Film programme. Famed Kubrick producer, Jan Harlan, visited students this year for the second time, sharing a wealth of experience from a lifetime of working on films such as The Shining and Full Metal Jacket.

Closer to home, Jerry has also worked on costume production for the filming of Poldark and in the costume department for the Theatre Royal, where he has made costumes for Wicked and the Book of Mormon. Look out for his work in our college-wide Graduate Shows 2016 during June, when you’ll be able to visit the college to see examples of student work from every subject that we teach. Making and crafting contemporary jewellery Although there’s now a strong focus on digital media and programmes of study that prepare you for modern industry, with cutting-edge facilities such as FabLab Plymouth housed there, Plymouth College of Art still invests heavily in more traditional crafts, such as our BA (Hons) Jewellery programme.
3rd year BA (Hons) Jewellery student Luke Axworthy was recently granted The Goldsmiths’ Company Student Silver Bullion Grant for his exceptional silver artwork, which was inspired by the rocky coastline and crashing waves at Seaton beach. Graphic design on a global stage It isn’t just the South West that inspires us. We also encourage students to travel internationally and put their work in a global context. Our BA (Hons) Graphic Design students recently visited design studios 44flavours and Pentagram in Berlin to talk about how they find and work with clients, their studio ethos’, work placements and how they approach design problems. With such rigorous programmes of study, it’s no wonder that graduates like Tom Gordon go on to design best-selling t-shirts and tour posters for the likes of Queens of the Stone Age, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones. Interested in creative study, but haven’t found the right course for you? There’s still time to apply to Plymouth College of Art courses through UCAS Extra, open until 4 July 2016. property market appraisal: 2016
Dan Robinson Smeaton Homes Following an in-depth rebranding exercise 18 months ago, Smeaton Homes has certainly been on the rise in 2016. "Smeaton Homes prides itself on working with local suppliers and creative professionals." Daniel Robinson, Director, commented: "The new branding for the business has enabled us to secure a prolific profile in Plymouth’s property market. You may have seen our bold red-andwhite striped sales and lettings boards springing up all over our city over the last year.".
Plymouth’s booming property market The new buy-to-let ISA (which the government released in March) has really helped first-time buyers to get onto the property ladder, With demand from home-hunters reaching an all-time high in the last few months, the pause from investors could give first-time buyers a better opportunity to set foot on that first rung, a recent Rightmove report suggests. And Smeaton Homes isn’t letting this opportunity pass by: their service is always being shaped in response to the changing market.
What people want Daniel knows that right now is the prime time to be listening to feedback from local vendors and

Although we would prefer not to think about it, we are almost halfway through the year. With an EU referendum on the horizon and a spring budget already delivered, we’ll take a look at the effect this has had (and may continue to have) on our local property market.
With demand from home-hunters reaching an all-time high in the last few months, the pause from investors could give first-time buyers a better opportunity to set foot on that first rung
buyers and introducing structured, personalised services which tick every box for them. He now knows that two main vendor bugbears are unpredictable fees and underwhelming advertising efforts.
As a result, Smeaton Homes has had their list of completely transparent fixed fees (copies available on request) and all-inclusive advertising clearly displayed on all their marketing packages. These have all been carefully developed to rival the prices and offerings of other agencies in the local area.
And all this hard work is clearly paying off It’s this honest, straightforward approach which has led to Smeaton Homes rapidly collecting new customers, all of whom are enjoying a personalised service with no nasty fee surprises when their house gets snapped up. So keep watching out for those bold red and white stripes: you’re going to be seeing a lot more of them over the coming year.
Totally transparent One of Smeaton Homes’ biggest selling points is their completely transparent fee structure. Nobody likes nasty surprises, especially when it comes to selling their home. That’s why, instead of setting a fee in stone upon initial valuation, Smeaton Homes always sets their fee according to the final sale price. This is particularly helpful in situations where the market’s a bit slow and a property ends up selling for less than its initial valuation. Daniel commented: “I strongly believe in being as fair as possible to our customers, and there’s nothing fair about paying a fee based on an initial valuation when a house could end up selling for thousands of pounds less.”

It’s been an interesting start to the year for us at Hindhead Property and in the property market in general with government changes to stamp duty now coming into force for buyto-let and second home owners. There was an incredible rush towards the end of March for buyers wishing to beat the stamp duty increase and save themselves thousands of Cavanna Homes pounds in land tax. Perhaps surprisingly we Boatyard development are still seeing large numbers of buy-to-let investors interested in purchasing properties that are coming to the market who are taking a longer term view on their investment.

Cavanna Homes Boatyard development
Cavanna Homes 5 Star rating confirms customer satisfaction Cavanna Homes, which has two developments in Plymouth, is celebrating after being named as one of Britain’s most highly regarded homebuilders.
“Across the industry, increases in production have put pressure on builders and the customer satisfaction scores of some of the larger housebuilders have fallen in recent years.

Cavanna Homes 504k deve
The Torquay based family firm, has been awarded the maximum five stars for customer satisfaction in the nationwide Home Builders Federation (HBF) survey for the fourth year in a row. The prestigious five stars mean that at least 90 per cent of new Cavanna homeowners would recommend the company to a friend. The survey has been carried out annually for the past eleven years, but Cavanna Homes has only been included since 2013 when the customers of smaller firms were first surveyed. The company has been rated among the bestperforming home builders in the UK every time it has been judged, and is the only firm in the South West to have earned such consistently high ratings. Managing Director Eugene Rapson said: “For more than 20 years Cavanna Homes has conducted its own customer surveys to ensure that we are continually responding to the expectations of our homebuyers. “The HBF customer survey is hugely important in supplementing this work and showing that smaller family housebuilders, like ourselves,

“We have strengthened and grown our own team so we are able to continue to give our customers the after-sales service they deserve,” added Mr Rapson. Homebuyers in Plymouth currently have the choice of two Cavanna developments; 504K at Derriford, close to the University of St Mark and St John, Derriford Hospital and Tamar Science Park, and the other, The Boatyard, at Oreston, with stunning views of Hooe Lake and with easy access to Plymouth City Centre, the main trunk roads to Cornwall and Exeter and the glorious beaches of the South Hams. Cavanna Homes Sales Manager Karen Heywood said: “504K is an extremely popular development because of the wide selection of homes available and its excellent location, midway between Dartmoor and the city, with the added benefit of enjoying excellent public transport services.” There are a range of homes available at 504K, from the Constable, which has two en-suite bedrooms to the Stokesay II, the Linnet and the Allington which all have three bedrooms. The Condor is a four bedroom townhouse with en-suite master bedroom and integral ground floor garage and The Barnard, a four bedroom detached home has a separate dining room, ensuite master bedroom and integral garage.
Martin Cavanna receives the HBF '5 star home builder' award At The Boatyard, Cavanna Homes is on the last phase with only a few properties remaining. The “Clipper” waterfront homes which are arranged over four storeys with an open plan kitchen/ family/ dining room offering views over the estuary as wells as two en-suite bedrooms, two further bedrooms, family bathroom, utility, cloakroom and a large integral garage and basement are among the last few properties. Oreston village offers many local services; including a primary school, florist, supermarket, hairdressers, pub and newsagents. Oreston Quay is home to the Plym Yacht Club, which hosts a variety of community events throughout the year. The quay also has a free public slipway, perfect for boating enthusiasts. The properties at The Boatyard have been built using traditional materials such as slate, stone, weatherboard cladding and render to ensure each house complements its natural surroundings. Glazed facades and private balconies allow homeowners to take advantage of the waterside location and wonderful views. The Boatyard “Clippers” are priced from £419,995 (as of 18.04.16) and further information is available on the Cavanna Homes website or from the sales advisor on 01752 408091, Thursday to Monday 10am-5pm.
