The last time they visited Plymouth, Plymouth Herald said "The KODO drum troupe whisked us away….. KODO drummers are so incredibly inventive... the strictest discipline and years of practice must be the key to their incredible precision….. it brought the audience to it’s feet for a much-deserved standing ovation. A visual treat as well as an aural one, the group once again held the very appreciative Plymouth audience completely spellbound for the duration of another stunning show." Amidst reverberations like rumbles in the earth large serpents coil, demons and lions move wildly. They surface from the gloomy dark, eerie at times, and in some respects, even nostalgic… This work fuses Kodo’s real worth, the dynamism of taiko expression, with the wondrous beauty and true charm that lie within rituals expressing the worship of myriad gods and reverence for nature that have been traditions in Japan since ancient times. This performance takes you on a voyage to the extraordinary, to a mysterious realm that lies in the beyond… The phenomenal Japanese taiko drumming company KODO will return to the UK in February 2016 – its 35th anniversary - with the thrilling new production ‘MYSTERY’, designed to reflect the beauty and mystery of Japanese traditions throughout the ages. Featuring 15 of Kodo’s highly trained Taiko (Japanese percussion instruments) performers, ‘MYSTERY’ is the second touring work to be directed by the company’s Artistic Director, the celebrated Kabuki actor Tamasaburo Bando. Hailing from the remote Sado Island, Kodo is the first and most influential Taiko ensemble in the world, comprising a troupe of musicians and dancers who transform centuries-old traditional Japanese ritual and performing arts into exhilarating, contemporary stage shows.

KODO is a professional Taiko drumming troupe that made its professional concert debut in Berlin in 1981. Since then Kodo has smashed box office records all over the world; performed over 5,600 shows in 47 countries on five continents; built up a huge international following and gained celebrity fans from maestro percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie, to world famous choreographer Akram Khan; from trip hop band Badmarsh & Shri to the producers of ‘Stomp’. This multi-award winning company is based on Sado Island, Japan. The word ‘Kodo’ has two meanings: ‘heartbeat’, the primal source of all rhythm and ‘children of the drum’. Although Taiko are the primary instrument in their performances, other traditional Japanese musical instruments such as fue (flute) and hand-cymbal make an appearance on stage along with dance and vocal performance. Kodo’s repertoire includes pieces based on the traditional rhythms of regional Japan, pieces composed for the company by contemporary songwriters, and pieces written by company members. Rigorous training and athletic ability is essential; some of the drums weigh hundreds of pounds.

art matters by Norman Holmes, Kaya Gallery

Tracey Hunter At this time of year when a number of us decide on a list of potential new year resolutions that may just make it to the end of January it’s worth reflecting on those artists who take the plunge to give up the safety of regular paid employment to pursue their artistic dream and with bills still to pay failure is not an option. Musicians, sculptors, actors, dancers, indeed all artists make the choice to earn their living from their artistic endeavours and soon find out that it’s a tough route to eventual success. For example painters have to create enough individual pieces of work that can be deemed ‘commercial’ enough to sell through galleries and then decide if they want to offer prints of those originals to ensure a steady stream of income in months when new originals haven’t sold. Also what are the right venues for the art? Should they make cards of their images? Do they need to employ a part time administrator to deal with paperwork to allow them more time to paint? Also should they sign a contract with an agent or chain outlet that may put their work in many galleries overnight but may also significantly reduce their percentage pay on sales?

10 woinplymouth

As questions mount it is likely that the joy of doing what previously inspired them has now started to evaporate as the art has turned into ‘a job’ and the source of income. I know local artists Jane Vaux and Jackie Gale who gave up work in social services and nursing respectively to work full time on their art and in their early years struggled with the questions above whilst seeing little money coming back into their accounts. However they are both now well respected and successful artists selling work throughout the country so I’m sure they would say ‘If you believe totally in your artistic talent, then go for it, as like our new year resolutions the rewards are worth it’. On the local art scene, if you’ve not yet seen it yet, then the Gerhard Richter exhibition at the City Museum is on till 16th January as is my favourite exhibition of last year ‘In the Frame’ with a beautiful portrait collection. Art Mill at Hyde Park also have their Christmas exhibition running till 30th January and I was particularly taken with the work of Cornish artist Tracey Hunter whose Cubist style is now on display at the Kaya Gallery on the Barbican.

I was particularly taken with the work of Cornish artist Tracey Hunter whose Cubist style is now on display at the Kaya Gallery on the Barbican. 2015 was once again a tough year for artists and galleries so if you are to make any resolutions then supporting independent traders and their pool of artists would certainly be appreciated. Happy New Year to you all and especially those artists who have just decided to listen to their heart and go it alone.

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering at Buckland Abbey do give us a call on 01822 853607 – we’ll love to talk to you about the year ahead. From 13 February Buckland Abbey reopens daily for all to enjoy. Discover tales of seafaring legend Sir Francis Drake indoors, explore the wider estate, find your place of peace and tranquillity in the Cider House garden or relax and unwind with a warming drink in the restaurant. 2016 sees the final year of Buckland’s ‘Rembrandt revealed’ exhibition being open to the public. There’s still chance to uncover the story of how the series experts discovered the truth about Buckland’s masterpiece and how they verified as a portrait of the great master. The exhibition is open 11am-4.30pm daily.

New exhibition explores the fascinating relationship between toys and conflict A new nationally touring exhibition from the V&A Museum of Childhood opens at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday 6 February

War Games

‘War Games’ is an exhibition for both adults and children, which explores the role of warfare in children's play from 1800 to the present day. The exhibition provides an opportunity for visitors to investigate how toys recreate and represent war, and asks them to question this often controversial subject. Why do children play war games? Toys and games often reflect contemporary conflict and technology. They have also been used as tools of propaganda, as well as to instil a sense of militarism and nationalism in children.

Reality to Fantasy

Reality to Fantasy looks at the change that came in the aftermath of the World Wars. An increased exposure to the brutality of war led to public distaste for war toys and so manufacturers looked to the space race of the 1950s and 1960s, and its absorption into popular culture, leading to space rangers and ray guns.

Showcasing over 100 objects from the V&A Museum of Childhood, as well as important loans from the Imperial War Museum, the Museum of London, Nuremberg’s Spielzeugmuseum and private collectors, the exhibition examines the effect of war and conflict on toys and games through four thematic sections: Playing at War, On the Battlefield, Reality to Fantasy and Secret Weapons.

Despite growing opposition to nuclear power, during the Cold War era toy makers and comic publishers used the fear and fascination of the atomic age to create superheroes that fought fantastical battles of ‘good’ against ‘evil’. Protests against the Vietnam War and media exposure to conflict meant that manufacturers shifted the focus of their war toys from current affairs towards nostalgia, using historic battles, medieval knights and Cowboys and Indians as inspiration.

Playing at War raises the controversial topic of children re-enacting war through historic dressing up clothes, toy weapons and strategy games.

On the Battlefield

On the Battlefield provides a chronological overview of combat, exploring how toys have imitated the changing technology of weaponry, new geographies of war zones and the creation of new armies. Exhibits such as a 1920s German trench and soldier set and a 2010

Secret Weapons reveals the use of toys in warfare - to train and influence, to comfort and heal and to aid escape. It questions the role of war toys as tools of propaganda or patriotism, with games like the 1914 British puzzle Get Rid of the Huns. This section also looks at the role of computer games to train troops in the modern tactics of battle.

Highly interactive

The exhibition is highly interactive, encouraging

children to dress up, play at espionage and engage in many other activities that encourage learning, while photography, film and games all contribute to a diverse and stimulating experience.

Important anniversaries

Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery has programmed the exhibition to coincide with the continuing centenary of World War I (2014-2018) and the 75th anniversary of the Plymouth Blitz (March and April 2016). The objects on display will encourage visitors to question their own views and contribute to a debate on playing at war.

Lots of events

As always, the Museum’s event programme over the next couple of months is filled with Lunchtime Talks, Art Bites and free film screenings for adults. There are lots of activities on offer for children too with a busy February half term programme and a special event to mark National Storytelling Week. For full details call 01752 304774 or visit www.plymouthmuseum.gov.uk

Importantly, the real-time data analytics provided by user feedback through the Artory system, gives the venues vital information about their audiences that can inform and secure investment for future projects and events. It allows users to build a picture of all the events happening around Plymouth, enabling art organisations to better plan their activities and collaborate with and support one another.

Cinema with Character at Plymouth Arts Centre Two films screened earlier at Plymouth Arts Centre have been brought back for the January-February programme by popular demand: Suffragette was the second most popular film ever shown by the centre in Looe Street and 45 Years, starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay is making a return visit in early January. January and February are prime times for film and there are plenty of big hitters to choose from. Carol, the Cate Blanchett film about two women who embark on a whirlwind and secretive affair, is beautifully shot and scripted; introduced on 12 January by Millie Brown from Plymouth College of Art.The Dressmaker is a seriously funny movie, starring Kate Winslet who, armed with her sewing machine and haute couture style, sets about to transform the women of a rural, Australian town and exact some sweet revenge.

Artory is a free app launched in January 2015, that provides users with an interactive ‘what’s on’ diary of culture in Plymouth.

Other films, amongst others, include Grandma, Sunset Song, Steve Jobs, Bridge of Spies and Youth, Michael Caine’s late, great film. A new Film Club is starting on Tuesday 2 February. Film notes will be given out before the film, The Danish Girl, with a chance to chat about the film afterwards in the bar, over a glass of wine!

Many additional venues have joined the app since its launch, some as full members and others listing one off events. The city's festivals, including Plymouth Art Weekender, are also included.

The 61 seat cinema, open from Tuesday-Saturday, is cosy and intimate; drinks and snacks from the café/bar can also be enjoyed before, during or after the film. Noodles are available on Thursdays and Fridays for £7. Advance booking is highly recommended for cinema tickets, which cost from £6.50 – drop in between 1-8.30pm, phone 01752 206114 or book online at www.plymouthartscentre.org.

Culture Club It was developed collaboratively by twelve leading cultural organisations from across Plymouth who identified a need for a cohesive guide to the arts across the city.

By filling out their profile, checking into venues, exploring the listings and building a schedule of events they’d like to attend, users create their own personalised cultural journey. The innovative app also allows users to earn Art Miles® by visiting venues and leaving feedback. These can be exchanged in participating cultural venues all over the city for drinks, discounts and VIP events.

The software behind Artory is open-source, meaning that once it has been piloted in Plymouth it will be available for use by other cities to promote their cultural activity. There has already been interest from other cities that are keen to see how it works, including Vancouver and Qatar. This city-wide initiative has been produced by i-DAT and Plymouth Arts Centre with a number of collaborative partners: Theatre Royal Plymouth, Barbican Theatre, Plymouth City Museum and Gallery, The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art, Peninsula Arts Plymouth University, KARST, Ocean Studios, Take a Part, Plymouth Dance, Plymouth Culture, The National Marine Aquarium, Flameworks, Devonport Live, Devonport Guildhall, the Lenkiewicz Foundation and Voodoo Lounge. The Artory app is designed and developed by Elixel with i-DAT. Artory is funded by Plymouth Arts Centre, i-DAT with Plymouth University, Elixel, Destination Plymouth, Plymouth City Council and Plymouth Culture. Arts and culture organisations interested in being involved in Artory can contact Charlotte McGuinness at Plymouth Arts Centre via charlotte@plymouthartscentre.org The app can be downloaded from www.artory.co.uk or via the App Store or Google Play.

Who was the real Saint Valentine? The tradition that romantics show their affection by exchanging tokens of love, letters and cards to their 'Valentine' on February 14th has been popular since the mid Seventeenth century in the UK. As many of us start to consider how we to spoil that special someone this year - a romantic meal, city break, an overly affectionate showering of gifts or just a bottle of plonk accompanied by chocolates and wine: have we ever wondered why this ritual exists and how it all began? Saint Valentine, officially known as Saint Valentine of Rome, was a third-century Roman saint. Although not much of St. Valentine's life is known, it is highly agreed that St. Valentine was martyred and then buried on the Via Flaminia to the north of Rome. The Emperor at the time, Claudius II, decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, therefore, he outlawed marriage for young men so that he had a strong and fulsome Army. Valentine, who had been imprisoned previously for continuing to try to convert people to Christianity, defied the Emperors wishes and secretly performed weddings for young lovers desperate to commit their love to each other.

20 woinplymouth

Imprisoned for his treachery, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who many believe to have been the jailer's daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before he died, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still used in many Valentine's cards today. Although there are several theories about Saint Valentine, what is apparent in all the accounts of his life is his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure.

For that extra romantic touch why not enjoy a night in one of our luxury rooms, from the tower experience to a four poster bed, we have stunning rooms for you to relax after an evening of indulgence. We can also arrange additional treats to be in your room before you arrive to make someone feel really special. For Valentine’s Day we have a range of packages available on Saturday 13th February. You can select a three course Valentine’s Dinner for £35.00pp served in our restaurant, which will include a gift from the hotel or select one of our Dine and Stay packages: STANDARD DOUBLE ROOM with Valentine’s Dinner including Breakfast £160.00 per room per night

Claudius became raged and sentenced Valentine to death, commanding him to renounce his faith or be beaten with clubs and beheaded. St. Valentine refused to renounce his faith and Christianity and was executed outside the Flaminian Gate on February 14, 269.

MASTER DOUBLE ROOM with Valentine’s Dinner including Breakfast £180.00 per room per night

Magical Malta (part 2) Last month I offered a snap-shot of Malta the Mediterranean Island with so much to offer. This month I hope to purvey some more rather in- depth info that might entice you to its shores this coming summer. Starting with Valetta – all roads lead to this bustling shining honey-coloured city, in fact all bus routes do also which makes for a simple system if you (like us) decide to explore the gems of the Island by public transport. The ancient architecture of the cities of Malta are more than special as they illustrate styles and religions over the centuries. Each of these masterpieces are open to the public (some with small charges or voluntary contributions) and are adorned with the most wonderful paintings and religious artefacts. South - east of Valetta is the funky fishing port of Marsaxloxx that offers the visitor an unrivalled view of sea life and a fishing market all rolled around an Azure blue bay. We found a bustling market on a Sunday and is truly bursting with energy and friendliness. The Fish market is bang in the centre of the Sunday market that purveys ephemera, souvenirs, and Maltese fast food! And in sort of North African way – thousands upon thousands of clothes. It’s a good two hours meandering around with the sea no more than 5 meters away at every gap between the stalls. Lunch called and Fish was our quarry. We found Ron’s Restaurant on the quay that looked full to bursting and just the ticket. It was – a couple of different freshly purloined whole grilled Bream a Green salad and a bottle of excellent Vermentino from Delicata that was wholly grown and created on the Island. Local grub at its very freshest and best. Expect around 40 Euros for two for this style of urban fare. Perhaps the jewel in the crown is the city of Mdina centrally positioned as the ancient capital of Malta. Its majestic battlements and villas sit cheek by jowl overlooking the Islands farmland, towns and villages. The atmosphere is majestic with extraordinary sites at every corner. Restaurants and bars, Tea rooms and museums it’s all here. One of the best surprises on Malta is the rise of quality wine on every restaurant list. Search further and visit the excellent Meridiana Vineyard and Winery who elaborate quality wine at most price points. Search for Fenici, Astarte and Isis for top draw whites they suit the fish a treat whilst Nexus Merlot (exceptional) and Celcius Cabernet Sauvignon are great Mediterranean quaffers of distinction. Visits and tasting by arrangement and worth it! Our journey also took us to Gozo the sister island positioned to the west. We boarded the 30 minute ferry from Cirkawwa to Mgarr and boarded the bus to the impressive Citadel in the capital city of Victoria. I found the walk to the top very rewarding as I glimpsed back to

24 woinplymouth

view the patchwork of sustainable farms and smallholdings, winding roads and the blue sea inviting you to swim and discover the charms of its harbours and inlets. Search out the rustic Ta’ Rikardu where the most beautiful dishes of Maltese character are offered. Washed down with his simple Rose wine and you will not want to leave. I met this rugged man on his farm a few days previous where his vineyards and goats live in close proximity. Olive oil, goats cheese, a sort of ravioli and fresh tomatoes and fruit are Rikardu’s main repertoire but beautifully executed with a simple charm you feast very well. A visit to Ta’ Mena winery just a stones throw from Victoria is a must for wine lovers. Quality organic wine is carefully crafted to an extremely high standard. It was hard to pick a favourite as sound hygienic winemaking kept surprising me. The ancient monuments are also very special – Gozo sporting the extraordinary Ggantija built over 5000 years ago. Like me I hope your visit will be a moving experience of something that man had made so long ago. Back on Malta a must visit amongst many accessible ancient sites are the Mnajdra Temples and marvel at the sheer feat of engineering needed to create the wonderful structures. My accommodation was at the exquisite Corinthia Spa Hotel where style meets conviviality. This is a 5 star hotel of distinction but with a beating heart! The staff are so good you want to stay a while more as they smile their way through the day with help and advice delivered with consummate ease. The restaurants in the Corinthia are created for any occasion with fine dining the pinnacle of Malta’s bourgeoning cuisine. Chef Director Stefan Hogan oversees a truly quality operation. His grasp on creating modern cuisine with a Mediterranean (Maltese) twist is the hallmark of the Corinthia’s table. My overview is of Malta in the 21st century is that it truly believes in itself, it has simply grown up no longer the poor relation of the Mediterranean Islands, it shouts from the top – come visit us! I am planning another visit next time to take in the Grand Prix, Festivals and more restaurants and wineries! Can’t wait. Stephen’s visit was funded by Visit Malta and the Corinthia Spa Hotel to whom we give our appreciation and grateful thanks. Air transport can be arranged (locally) from Exeter and Bristol airports.

Born on January 25th 1759, in Alloway, Scotland, Robert Burns early life doesn't read like that of a national hero. But in his short life (Burns died aged just 37), he had taken the Scottish literary world by storm, and had secured a place for himself in history and in legend. Burns father was a tenant farmer, and although not rich, wanted the best for his son and in the established Scottish tradition made sure young Robert was well educated. Burns received instruction in Latin, French and mathematics and it was also about this time (aged 15) that Burns turned his hand to poetry.

Choosing the perfect

Wedding venue

When getting married the 'where' is one of the most important decisions you have to make, It can structure all the other aspects with couples planning their entire day around their dream venue. Here are some things to consider along with some ideal, local, venues. Mount Edgcumbe

Most weddings need two different venues, one for the ceremony and the other for the reception. With regards to the ceremony, a traditional church wedding remains a popular choice for most couples, often the one closest to where the bride or groom grew up. In any case, if you are going for a church ceremony then the reception will need to be planned around the wedding service. Things such as ease of transport for guests from the ceremony to the reception need to be considered, and many couples opt for somewhere nearby.

licensed wedding venues, but has the benefit of minimising the amount of travelling for you and your guests. If your options are unlimited, and you have a particular venue in mind, consider the size of wedding you want – if you want a big do then some venues may not have the capacity, whilst if you are a smaller affair, you may end up swamped by an enormous hall that could ruin the intimacy of the occasion. In short, make sure you have a good idea of numbers before you start looking at venues.

Along with the character of stately home or luxury hotel comes a fantastic backdrop for all your wedding photos as well as the added benefit of having accomodation onsite. Nowadays more and more venues are licensed to perform marriage ceremonies. This opens an even wider choice. Therefore, if you are thinking about a civil wedding, you have the option of choosing a venue that will host both your ceremony and reception. If this is what you are hoping for, you will have to choose a venue that is licensed for marriage ceremonies. This may well come at a higher price tag than non-

Do you know what kind of reception you are after? A formal sit down meal will require more space than a stand up buffet (and will cost a lot more too!), so a venue that may be able to hold 100 seated guests may be able to fit 200 for a canape reception. Decide which one you prefer. Also, think about what kind of entertainment you

are after – a DJ will obviously need a dance floor but a band may take up a lot more room. So where to go? Well any number of buildings can make the perfect venue, but some of the most popular include, castles, country house, larger luxury hotels and stately homes which offer a lot of character – if your budget can stretch. Along with the character usually comes a fantastic backdrop for all your wedding photos as well as the added benefit of having accomodation onsite. Alternatively, and particularly if you are considering a summer wedding, a marquee could be a great option if you have access to space. This option will also mean you can take control of the catering as well as provide your own alcohol. Finally, these days, there are some more obscure venues you can consider - football grounds, racecourses, sailing clubs – you name it, many now hold licenses and are keen to give you the wedding of your dreams. Oh, and then there's always marrying abroad.

Created in 1980s by Dick Bradsell at Fred's Club, Soho. According to Dick, it was based on the Singapore Sling formula of gin, lemon, sugar and cherry liqueur, others say that it's similar to Jerry Thomas' Gin Fix by changing the raspberry syrup with the blackberry liqueur, either way it’s a great classic! Ingredients: 0ml Plymouth Gin 25ml fresh lemon juice 10ml sugar syrup 10ml Blackberry liqueur. We prefer ours build not shaken. Pour first 3 ingredients in a rocks glass with crushed ice, stir well, top up with more crushed ice and drizzle with the blackberry liqueur. Garnish with a blackberry and a mint sprig or a lemon slice.

Bespoke weddings, tailored to suit your needs at The New Continental Hotel

Capturing that special moment.

There has been a lot of planning, preparation, tears of joy and tears of despair along the way but when the big day arrives you want to capture every beautiful detail and remember them forever. Choosing the right photographer for your wedding is key; someone who is simply more than a camera-operator. Think carefully about the value you place on those images before you decide to move forward. Creating images that encapsulate the moment and the emotion of the day is a specialist task. Take advice from friends and family, even ask your venue if they can recommend bespoke companies or if they have a preferred suppliers list of services they use. Find out if any of the other services you are using for your wedding have any recommendations, remember 'good news travels fast, but bad news travels faster'. Think about the style of photographs you want from your photographer: Do you want them to be formal? Do you want lots of laughter? Do you want to be an Elegant bride? Maybe all of the above.

you meet the right photographer for you, follow your instincts - you'll feel comfortable and relaxed with them and that is half the battle. Obviously, you'll need to love their pictures too; look through portfolio's, look online, try and look through an entire wedding day shoot to see the mix of images. Look at different seasonal photos, is your wedding planned for the Summer or Winter see how they shoot outdoors as well as in. Be confident and go for it! Wedding photos should cover everything from the formal to those stolen moments that tell a story. It may be advisable (if the wedding is still some way off) to try some engagement shots, this will give you the ultimate test drive. You need to get to know the photographer as much as they need to get to know you.

Think carefully about the value you place on those images before you decide to move forward. Creating images that encapsulate the moment and the emotion of the day is a specialist task. You'll be pleasantly surprised to find that photographers, cake-makers, florists and dress makers will suit different styles and often find themselves working with like-minded brides and grooms – ask who they recommend and you'll find that all your worries and fears about the big day will evaporate and you can enjoy the whole experience which will come out even more in your photos. It is always important to meet with your photographer, and meet a few. Not all of us are comfortable in front of camera. Wedding photographs can be a very intimate thing played out in front of your closest friends and family, there's no surprise that there may be an element of 'camera shyness'. You'll know when

Consider how you want your photos to be presented. You want quality in your album but you don't want the album to steal the show. Also consider your budget, many of the top albums come at a price but if money is no object then a top album will make all the difference.

new year. new you

Create a more positive, happier and healthier future. The start of a new year offers up an opportunity to reflect on the year just passed and focus on the year ahead. It's also a chance for us to take stock of our lives. No matter what age we may be, we are all the youngest we are ever going to be, so why not embrace change and create a more positive, happier, healthier future. We take a look at 4 areas of life that affect us all: Health and Fitness, Careers, Finances and Property and ask local experts to give us their tips and advice on how to make 2016 a year for positive change.

Health and Fitness:

After a celebratory festive period, the new year tends to throw up a number of resolutions that target health. I know you would have heard all this before, but it would be remiss of us not to suggest a healthier regime. Whether you are considering eating less fatty foods, drinking less or maybe quitting cigarettes, there are a number of services and advisers in each local area that can help you achieve your goals. All these have a profound effect on your well being and general demeanour, clearing your systems of toxins that will leave you feeling fresh and ready for some new challenges for the year ahead.

the services of a personal trainer. If you really want to get fit and healthy in 2016, then a PT can advise on fitness as well as nutritional programmes and will be there every step of the way encouraging you to achieve your target. We speak to a selection of fitness professionals who can offer up some fantastic fitness tips and advice to kick start your new regime. Leading a healthier lifestyle doesn't always come down to just getting physically fit. As our understanding of the workings of the human body improves, it is clear that there may be other influences that are causing the odd ailment or contributing to feeling below par.

When one door closes another door opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.

If you want to take your health and fitness that one step further then joining a Gym or Fitness Club will not only give you that impetus to make 2016 a healthier one but will also open up a new group of friends to boost your social calendar. If the thought of signing up to a 12 month contract at your local gym seems a little too expensive then there are many other less expensive ways to get healthier and lose pounds in weight rather than financially. Look out for local running and swimming clubs, inexpensive and possibly the best way to get fit and keep weight off as well as meet new 'like-minded' people. If you already have a 'core' fitness then try the likes of Zumba, Yoga or Pilates in order to increase your flexibility and movement. If you feel the need to go that extra mile, then employing

You are never too late to learn a new skill, so go on – treat yourself and give yourself a challenge at the same time. An aspect of many people's lives that gets them down (especially in this current economic climate) is their job. In these difficult times you could argue that if you have a job then you should be grateful and just get on with it. However, despite the fact that we are coming out of a global recession, you shouldn't give up on your dream job or even starting up your own business. Maybe 2016 will be the year you release yourselves from the shackles of fear and either seek a new career or even go it alone. If you are looking for work then look into becoming an apprentice. This gives you the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification and develop professional skills, while earning a salary, inside some of Britain’s best companies. We take a look at some of the areas A apprenticeships providers, here their success stories, find out what opportunities are on offer as well as count down to National Apprenticeships Week, which will showcase thousands of events all over the country.

We are all different and our bodies react differently to certain foods. Maybe the culprit for you not feeling on top of your game comes down to the food you are putting in your body. If you have tried going down the 'gym route' then it may be worth gaining the advice of a wellbeing or nutritional specialist. They can point you in the right direction if you are intolerant to certain foods.

Careers and Learning:

We aim to answert all these and more with some of the citiies most respected voices and some of the areas best new build developments.

If you have always fancied speaking a foreign language, learning a skill or trade, study art or even learn to use and get the best out of your computer, then your local College or training centre will have all these opportunities and more.

Whatever your passion or aspiration, make 2016 the year of change for you and most of all enjoy doing it!

Maybe 2016 will give you an opportunity to learn a new skill?

With the average person moving home eight times during their life, it is inevitable that at some stage we are going to have to sit down and consider the option of moving. When is the best time to move? What should we look out for? Where are the best locations to buy in?

new year. new you: health and fitness

health and fitness After a celebratory festive period you may feel that a healthier regime is in order for 2016. Here, we speak to some local health and fitness professionals who can not only point you in the right direction, as to where to go, but offer some tips and advice that should inspire you to make the first step towards a healthier and fitter new year.

Josh Keith Coombe Dean Sports Centre Community Officer We all know that exercise is good for us, and that we should all regularly exercise and be active to stay healthy, but some of us fail to put the words into action.

So what is the best way to create a state whereby you burn more energy than you consume? Well the answer to this question is never easy because we all respond to certain types of exercise in different ways - but one thing is certain, the best training plan for you is the plan that you can follow with consistency. The biggest reason for people failing any fitness or physique related plan is that they never find a level of consistency and they try and make too many changes too soon, realise the changes are not sustainable and don’t fit around their lifestyle and inevitably “drop the fitness thing” long before they reach their potential.

Don’t be afraid of fat! Healthy fats play a vital role in health as they allow us to absorb vitamins A,D,E & K - so dropping fat out of your diet can put you on a fast track to poor health. Getting “Bang for your buck” in training When training to lose bodyfat I recommend people to use exercises that offer more “bang for your buck” which require more energy to perform and continue to burn energy long after the session has finished. Exercises such as squats, lunges, as well as pressing and pulling exercises require lots of energy to perform and speed up the process of improving your physique. Performing light exercise such as a long slow run can help you, but you will have to work much longer to get anywhere near the same level of energy expenditure.

You can then start to build on these by perhaps visiting your local gym and participating in fun group fitness classes. If confidence in a gym environment is your biggest nemesis then why not ask a member of gym staff for help and advice.

"

Consistency is the key to a healthier 2016 When it comes to fat loss it’s a well known fact you need to create a physical state whereby you burn more energy than you consume.

2016 could be your year, and with a few simple lifestyle changes you could feel fitter and healthier in no time at all. There are two main focus’s when living a healthier lifestyle. These are making healthier decisions relating to diet (swapping out the junk snacks for healthier alternatives), and starting with easy simple ways to keep active.

Fitness classes are a fantastic way to socialise with other like minded people of all abilities.

"

You can’t out-train a bad diet

No gym? No problem!

At Coombe Dean Sport Centre we have an extensive range of fitness equipment, activities, and services from group exercise class’s, to running clubs and personal training. Why not pop along and ask a member of staff for some help and advice on building a healthier you for 2016 or try one of our group fitness classes listed below:

Let’s say you’ve decided to train every day for an hour (Not that I’m saying that’s a good idea, for most people it’s not!) - this would have you training for 7 hours per week. Now if we consider that most people spend around 120 hours per week awake, that leaves us with 113+ hours to negate the hard work you’ve done in your training.

For people who don’t have access to a gym Interval Training is a great tool for fat loss and offers better energy expenditure than traditional low intensity exercise running.

Tuesday - Circuit Training 6-7pm Tuesday - Yankee Yoga 8-9pm Wednesday - Zumba 7-8pm Thursday - Boot camp Circuits 6-7pm

Idea’s such as using evenly spread lamp posts can produce a visually stimulating way to perform intervals - sprint past 2 lamp posts, then walk to the next, then sprint the next 2 and so on.

Fitness classes are a fantastic way to socialise with other like minded people of all abilities. You can also bring a friend or family member along with you for support or just to join in with the fun whilst keeping fit. From here you can build on your confidence and then try using the fitness facilities to further your progression and reach your fitness goals.

Healthy fats play a vital role in health as they allow us to absorb vitamins A,D,E & K - so dropping fat out of your diet can put you on a fast track to poor health.

To see continual results you must closely monitor your food and drink intake. I’m not keen on blanket prescribing nutritional advice, but as a rule of thumb most people would get a really positive response by including lean meats, fish, fibre rich green vegetables and healthy fats as the basis for their meals.

The 1000 Club was established in September 2012 in direct response to business feedback that young people are not 'work ready' regardless of their route to employment (school, further or higher education), and that businesses found the number of agencies and different incentives and schemes confusing. The 1000 Club's aim was to provide a single point for independent advice and guidance with the web site providing an overview of all the ways that businesses can support young people with the appropriate contacts. The 1000 Club immediately captured the city's imagination and further to securing additional funding the Club's activity has developed to meet the needs of business. The 1000 Club provides: A single independent point of contact for all enquiries about recruitment needs A brokerage service that enables the correct solutions to be identified from the most appropriate source

An independent point of contact to assist with identifying all training providers that provide training in required subject area Regular information on funding incentives and eligibility and other opportunities through a monthly newsletter Free networking events with other members at which 1000 Club Partners are on hand to provide advice and guidance Employer support packs to make it easier for employers to take on work experience placements The 1000 Club also disseminates the latest information on incentives and support available and provides a route to promote vacancies. Apprenticeships Are Your Future

GHQ Training pride themselves on the continued support they give to their learners throughout their Apprenticeship programme. A lot of thought goes in to matching the right Apprentice to the right Employer as the happiness and well being of their learners is a top priority for the City Centre training provider. Benefits of being an Apprentice

• Earning a salary while gaining a qualification (Earn and Learn) • Full contract of employment, including paid holidays • Improving learning and knowledge off the job as well as in work • Learning practical, job specific skills in a real environment • Improving other softer skills needed for long term employment • Career and educational progression opportunities

We asked a couple of GHQ’s learners about their experiences of being an Apprentice in hope to inspire more young people to take the next step on to the career ladder!

What can I do an Apprenticeship in? • Childcare • Support Teaching and Learning • Business Administration • Customer Service • Management • Retail • Hairdressing • Barbering • Beauty • Nail Services • Hospitality

Apprenticeship Myths! University is a better route in to employment! This is totally untrue! An Apprenticeship actually puts you straight in to a job that you are statistically likely to stay in once your course finishes. Therefore, if you already have an idea of what you want to do then doing an Apprenticeship will place you in the perfect position to develop and grow within a business whilst gaining an understanding of a working environment.

Apprenticeships are for people who can’t get in to university! A lot of people tend to make this assumption when thinking about an Apprenticeship but it’s absolutely not true! Apprenticeships are for anyone who enjoys hands on learning and they are in fact an equal alternative to university. So, if you’re looking at saving money for your future rather than spending it an Apprenticeship is definitely for you!

Apprenticeships are only available in blue collar industries such as plumbing, construction etc. This may have been true 25 years ago but not anymore! Apprenticeships are available in any industry you can think of. From a large corporate office in the city to a small coffee shop in the country! With the Government now backing Apprenticeships more than ever, more and more job opportunities will be created across all industries.

Demi-Leigh Ditchett

At 19 years old I didn’t have any ambition and lived one day at a time, I could see all of my peers following different paths and slowly I started to feel very alone. I got a job as a kitchen porter at a local restaurant, offering them hard labour on the washing up and anything else that I could try my hand at. I had no idea who Peter Gorton was or anything about cuisine or hospitality, I just needed work.

18 years old – Hairdressing Level 2 NVQ

Now I look back on this memory and it helps motivate me as a senior chef de partie in a successful hotel; I control and maintain my section and at times I even run service en pass, it seems like a different life all together and I cannot imagine myself outside of a kitchen. Peter taught me how to cook yes, but more importantly he taught me how to be an asset to my team and how to make myself employable. I now hone my skills under various chefs and I am refining my knowledge with GHQ training, they assess me and give me a much more holistic training which is very beneficial. I would say to any young individual who is considering apprenticeship that it’s all about your mentor and the relationship you have that makes you better and gives you a long lasting career, not just a job.

I started off at GHQ when I was 17 years old and completed a hairdressing course as part of the Plymouth Learning Trust scheme during year 12 at school. I then decided to do an Apprenticeship and felt so lucky because the GHQ Salon offered me a placement. I love working in the commercial salon, it’s so busy and I’m learning something new all the time. All of the staff are so lovely and friendly and I really enjoy my job and can’t wait to qualify!

Who is the AAT qualification for? Accounting technicians work at all levels of finance from accounts clerks to finance controllers. In a large company, they are a crucial part of a balanced team working alongside chartered accountants and administrative staff. Some AAT full members provide accounting services on a self-employed basis. Fully regulated, they provide a cost-effective accountancy and taxation service, particularly to small and medium sized enterprises. How is the qualification delivered? Aplus offer a choice of evening and day courses in Plymouth and Exeter for all levels. The course is assessed by means of a mix of computer based tests, projects and case studies. When does it start? Enrolment is on an open basis with dates throughout the year, which means that learners can enrol on the qualification at any time. How long does it take? Success Last year, Aplus Apprentice Jonathan Taylor won the EAL Award for the Advanced Apprentice of the Year at the National Apprenticeship Awards South West Ceremony.

Due to the open enrolment nature of Aplus, we have been able to take some of our applicants from application form to job in 72 hours. "I always thought I'd have to go down the university route to get a career but having looked into Apprenticeships I found this much more advantageous and well suited. Obtaining an Apprenticeship was much easier than expected. I attended a meet and greet with Aplus on the Wednesday and chatted to one of the tutors for my chosen course. By Friday I had been put in touch with a firm, attended an interview and been offered the position. I would recommend this route to anyone wanting to learn whilst gaining vital experience in the workplace." property Market Expectations: 2016

With the average person moving home eight times during their life, it is inevitable that at some stage we are going to have to sit down and consider the option of moving. Ideally, we would always move at the most opportune time and to the location with the greatest potential. With this in mind, we asked some of Plymouth's leading estate agents how they feel the local property market will perform in 2016. Plus, we hear about some of their success stories which should encourage those looking to buy or sell in the city. The Chancellor was frank in his assessment that people buying a property to let should not squeeze out those who cannot afford a home to buy. It is difficult to argue against such sentiments and there are many that believe the tough decisions he has taken to redress the balance should be applauded. Step forward then! To the service-focused salesonly Estate Agents like Mansbridge Balment. With the pedigree to deliver and staff that aren’t distracted by trying to combine sales with lettings services. With a major shift from renting to buying on the cards, you don’t need a jack of all trades…just a master of ‘one’.

Darren Lawson Mansbridge Balment A radical overhaul of Stamp Duty, major pension changes fuelling a property investment boom and the impact of Help to Buy, 2015 has been a big year for the housing market – but there’s another potentially big one to come, as Mansbridge Balment Managing Director Darren Lawson explains. ‘There will be little time to catch our breath after the many headline making changes in our industry this year. 2016 promises to be another extremely exciting period for both the Plymouth housing market and Mansbridge Balment. The Government’s decision to forge ahead with plans to build 400,000 homes across the UK over the next decade with a particular focus on affordable, shared ownership and starter homes for young families desperate to get on the property ladder, will mean a welcome return to something which has been sadly lacking in our great city for some time now – more choice. In recent years the Plymouth housing market has been woefully short of suitable properties, which has helped to fuel a sharp price rise. It has been hard enough for first time buyers to get near the property ladder, let alone take a step onto the first rung, and such rises have served only to further hinder their progress. But thanks to Chancellor George Osborne’s decision to raise Stamp Duty rates for ‘Buy to Let’ investors and second home owners from April next year, owning a home will once again start to become a very real and viable proposition for many first time buyers, particularly with the support of the flourishing Help to Buy scheme. Although we are already seeing an increase in activity for investors purchasing, this will subside in early 2016 before the April date. Ultimately more choice in the marketplace means more options for existing homeowners keen to take their next step up the housing ladder. The Stamp Duty increase is good news for all of them – and good news for NAEA licensed estate agents like Mansbridge Balment as it means we can really focus on what we do best – helping people to buy and sell their homes.

As we look forward to the exciting year ahead, there is still much to celebrate from the past 12 months for Mansbridge Balment. Our membership of The Relocation Agent Network, a National network of Independent Estate Agents, enables us to have a firm understanding of the UK market as a whole and with nearly all agents reporting a downturn of 20% on sales year on year, it makes me extremely proud of our two Plymouth offices. Sales at both our City and North Plymouth offices are at similar levels to 2014 and new instructions continue to get sold in quicker timescales than that of the national and indeed local average. It shows that we have successfully consolidated our position as the expert estate agents of choice for buyers and sellers alike in Plymouth and why we continue to sell more properties in the city than many of our rivals. What is important for us is being able to give tangible added value to our clients which differentiates us from the average estate agent either in the street or online – whether that is from our high customer service levels, enhanced marketing, 7 day a week opening or indeed simply because we are experts in what we do. I think the quote ‘The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of a low fee is forgotten’, is one that has resonated through the staff to the general public and has helped keep us at the forefront of the market. I’d like to personally thank all those sellers who have trusted us with the sale of their property this year. Trust is something that is earnt and our feedback on independent web portals such as allAgents.co.uk, the UK’s largest customer review website for the property industry, show that we continue to deliver on our initial promises. We have managed to consistently hold a top 50 place out of more than 14,400 UK Estate Agents for our service levels and it is a fantastic achievement, one that every single member of ‘Team Mansbridge Balment’ should take great pride in! Teamwork has got us to where we are – and it will get us to where we need to be next year too. ‘That’s one thing I am certain of!’

James Clarke Lang Town and Country So with the popular property buying season in front of us, I regularly get asked what do you think will happen to the market and for once 2016 maybe will be dictated to in part by a couple of changes made by the government towards the end of 2015. The government seem to be making an obvious push to do everything possible to enable first time buyers to get on the housing ladder with the launch of an interesting initiative that has not been seen before; the help to buy ISA. This is the option for a tax-free payment from the government of up to £6,000 for couples buying their first home, and interest rates of up to 4% when saving for a deposit. Like normal cash ISA’s, the help to buy version will offer a place to put money and earn interest free of tax. When an account is first opened savers will be able to deposit up to £1,000 as a lump sum, then up to £200 a month (not necessarily in a single payment) until the account holds a maximum of £12,000. When the saver comes to buy a home the government will pay a bonus of 25% – which means up to £3,000 is available per head. I believe this will see more first time buyers focusing on saving the deposit required when buying their first home. The government is also trying to stem the flow of the typical first time buyer type of property being sold to buy to let investors. Property investors will be hit by a 3% rise in stamp duty from 1 April 2016, and the surcharge will also apply to people buying second homes. This means the tax bill on a buy-to-let property costing £250,000 will jump from £2,500 to £8,800. We have already seen an increase in buyers trying to secure their investment purchase that they may have made in the latter part of the year before the April deadline. At Lang Town & Country we feel 2016 will be another positive progressive year in the Plymouth property market and selecting the right experience agent to sell such an important asset is the key. If you would like any further information on the current value of your property please visit www.langtownandcountry.com/Contact/ for the information on our 4 office locations.

influx of new build properties from the hugely successful developments at Quadrant Quay and Mount Wise which have added to our high quality portfolio. We offer properties across the city to professional clients who are looking for high specification properties to rent.

"

With interest rates looking as though they will remain at an historic low and the shortage of available property, both second hand and new build, the property market looks positive for a lively start once the Christmas holidays are behind us.

Atwell Martin feel it is important that potential purchasers and vendors in this market are aware of the impending change in the cost of buying once the legislation is in place. There is now a window of opportunity for vendors of these property types to act quickly and place their property on the market as active investors intending to buy in 2016 will no doubt bring forward their purchase plans with a view to beating the Stamp Duty deadline.

Atwell Martin are able to provide detailed advice to both buyers and sellers on all aspects of Buy to Let and investment sales or purchases.

We are proud to have won the Silver Award for the Best Single Office in the South West at the Estate Agency of the Year Awards in association with The Sunday Times and The Times. This award is testament to all the hard work we have put in over the last 12 months and our endeavours to provide a first class service across all departments.

The change in legislation also effects the buyers of holiday and second homes. Atwell Martin covers the whole of south-west Devon and south east Cornwall, both areas with a high percentage of second/holiday homes because of the stunning coastal and rural locations within the area and the excellent road and rail links to the rest of the country. It would be wise for potential second home purchasers to take advantage of this short window of opportunity to complete their purchase before the deadline-likewise, vendors should have the benefit of additional interest in their property as a result of this increase in potential buyers.

SALES - The year has been particularly busy for our Barbican office, with record transactions in residential sales, new homes, land transactions, second homes and buy-to-let property. With interest rates looking as though they will remain at an historic low and the shortage of available property, both second hand and new build, the property market looks positive for a lively start once the Christmas holidays are behind us. The only possible “fly in the ointment may be the rise in Stamp Duty Land Tax announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in his Autumn statement last month. The government intends

Which Estate Agent is right for you? When it comes to the occupational pariahs, estate agents are often considered right down there with lawyers, politicians and double glazing salesmen. Of course, in recent years bankers have nestled nicely into the bottom slot, a position they look likely to occupy for some considerable time. Lenders, solicitors and estate agents are all pretty important in the house buying process so it is not so surprising that some regard dealing in the property market as axis of evil.

Not so. Many people setting out to market their property will get two or three agents round to give them an appraisal. The most flattering agent who suggests the highest price will often win the pitch, attractive particulars will be prepared (“courtyard garden” = concreted over), the property hits the market and then …..nothing.

How can a 'Help to Buy ISA' help you to get on the property ladder With high property prices and stricter rules on gaining a mortgage, it was no wonder that one of the major announcements in this years Spring budget was aimed at helping people buy their first home. The new 'Help to Buy' ISA is an offer from the government to top up your savings for a deposit. Here is how it works: For every £1 you save the government will give you 25p. It'll match that up to a maximum of £200 each month, up to a total of £12,000. So you save £12,000 and you'll actually have £15,000 to play with. Help to Buy ISA's should be available from autumn 2015 and will stay open to first-time buyers for four years. Once you've got one though there's no time limit on how how quickly you have to save and no time limit on when you can use the government's bonus.

The ISA is available for people buying their first home. Help to Buy ISAs are only for people (or groups of people) buying their first home to live in. The scheme is not open to property developers or those looking for buy-to-let. If you're buying a home on your own you can use one Help to Buy ISA. If you're buying it with someone else you can both get one. If three of you are buying a house together you can all still get one each and use all three Help to Buy ISAs to help get you started. And so on. The Help to Buy ISAs won't be available until later this year, but you'll be able to open one with (up to) a £1,000 deposit – so start saving. The Help to Buy ISA will only be available on homes worth up to £250,000 (or £450,000 in London).

With the half of the year safely negotiated and the new government focusing on ways in which to continue boosting both the housing and construction sectors, we speak to some of Plymouth's leading Estate Agents who give us there thoughts on what the remainder of 2015 has in store and their success stories which should encourage those looking to buy, sell or rent in the city.

Certainly, we are finding that more mature couples are starting to downsize and in particular looking for low maintenance property once the children have left home so they are able to enjoy eating out, going to the theatre and various other social activities that this fabulous city has to offer. We have seen particular success with our waterside apartment sales and with the recent development that we are handling at the Millfields in Plymouth. We are now entering the last phase of the development where a total of 58 contemporary apartments have been created from the former Royal Naval hospital wards. We are now about to release the last building/phase in the block known as “Copenhagen” and prior to launch we have already received off plan reservations.

Public Enemy Number 1? The way that the government have been behaving recently, you’d think that Landlords are public enemy No. 1. First, the Chancellor in his summer budget cut the tax relief for Landlords down to the basic rate of tax, and then in the autumn statement he decided to add awe whopping surcharge to stamp duty Well, are now3% past the election and heading on Buy-to-Let this puts into summer atproperties. full speed.Effectively, At Lang Town the stamp duty modestly priced Buyand Country weon area experiencing a buoyant to-Let pretty much in property the sameselling bracket as a property market with in all million pound house! price ranges. Well, thanks to recent research from property website Zoopla, we have more of View from Clippers an understanding of how theThe financial side of the arguement stacks up. Although homeowners will pay, on average, £ 316 per month more to live in their home (the average mortgage repayment stands at £ 1,181 per month while renting is currently at £ 865), the equity they will gain on the value of the house will outstrip the savings that someone renting will have earned within five years.

something new?

It's fair to say the housing market has seen a series of ups and downs since the recession took hold in 2008. During this time, there have been a number of policies introduced by government to kick start the housing market and get Britain building again.

In recent months, positive trends on inflation and levels of employment have been good for the countries recovery. These positive trends have also seen a renewed confidence from those wanting to move home. But as demand grows, the lack of available homes has seen a continued rise in house prices. This has resulted in an even greater need to build new homes.

These figures show that there is a greater confidence in the housing market, both for potential buyers and for home builders themselves, and the South West seems to be leading the way with Cornwall having the largest increase in new homes last year with 2,700, followed by 2,120 in Wiltshire.

These figures show that there is a greater confidence in the housing market, both for potential buyers and for home builders themselves. In 2011, the government set out plans to build one million new homes (over the course of that parliament 2011/14), but according to The National Housing Federation only 457,490 were built and approximately 245,000 new homes are still needed each year in England to stave off the possibility of a major homes shortage.

Further good news:

With cheaper mortgage rates, government schemes like Help to Buy, higher levels of employment, improving economic conditions and low interest rates it is no wonder that we have seen the number of first-time buyers rise to its highest level in seven years. More than 170,000 homes were added to England's housing stock in the last financial year, up 25% up on the previous year, but remaining 26% below the peak of 223,530 recorded in 2007-08.

This means that there will be a standard terminology, so lenders will in future use the same names for fees. It will also have a common format, so that each lender will list fees in the same order, with the same descriptions.

Coupled with the promises of continued home development comes the news that banks and building societies are to simplify mortgage information, to help borrowers find the cheapest deals.

Also, the popular Help to Buy (equity loan) scheme in England, which is aimed at helping first time buyers and home movers with a deposit as small as 5 per cent to buy a new build

property in England (up to a maximum price of £ 600,000), will also be extended to 2021: one year longer than planned. As confidence continues to build (no pun intended), we take a look at some of the reasons to buy new as well as highlight some of the new home developments in the Bath area. Benefits of buying a new build: In order for home buyers to get onto the property ladder, the government have come up with a number of ways in which you can buy a new home. The aforementioned 'Help to Buy' scheme is just one, along with: Help to Buy - Mortgage Guarantee: This scheme is designed to help homeowners as well as first time buyers to purchase either a new build or an existing property in the UK with as little as 5 per cent deposit (up to a maximum price of £ 600,000). A mortgage of up to 95 per cent is required from a lender, of which the Government will guarantee the lender up to 15 per cent of the property’s value. These purchases cannot be a shared ownership or shared equity purchase. The home cannot be a second home or a buy-to-let property.

property Help to Buy – Isa: Potential home buyers can start to save for a deposit and for every £ 200 saved, the government will add a £ 50 bouns (up to a maximum of £ 3000 bonus). This means that buyers needing a £ 15,000 deposit will save £ 12,000 and the government will boost it with £ 3,000 helping them to reach their target quicker. Shared Ownership: Shared Ownership enables you to buy a percentage of your house – from 25 to 75%. The percentage you don't own, you pay rent on. New Buy: The scheme is designed for first and second time buyers who can afford a 5 – 10% deposit. • Choice of appliances, fixtures and fittings As well as being fresh, bright and clean, a new home is untouched by previous owners. Many developers will offer you the opportunity to chose your own appliances, fixtures and fittings creating a blank canvass on which to stamp your own style and personality. Many home builders will also offer a bespoke service to choose decorations, fixtures and fittings or extra items at an additional cost. This can include flooring, interior design or even garden landscape service. • The latest in buildings regulations The quality of house building construction has grown significantly in recent years with almost 90% of home buyers declaring themselves satisfied with their new homes in the most recent industry survey. Many house builders also provide a comprehensive customer-care service and added peace of mind is provided by the 10 year warranty issued by organisations such as the National House-Building Council. • Value for money Buying a home is one of the biggest financial commitments that you will make in life, therefore, make sure you don't overstretch your finances or speculate on short term price rises. Of course, house prices can go up or down but it’s easy to see why so many people feel that buying a new home, particularly with all the help that builders can provide, was their best move ever. Most house builders price their homes to sell swiftly, particularly in these competitive times. So keen prices, generous incentives and help with moving costs provide unbeatable value for money. • Low Maintenance and safety New homes are built to a much higher specification than the majority of older homes so you get more for your money. They have central heating, double-glazing and high standards of roof, floor and wall insulation all included in the price. Standard features also usually include fitted kitchens with integrated appliances and stylish bathrooms and cloakrooms, many en-suite. New homes are also safer and more secure than older homes. Fire Safety is helped by the use of smoke alarms, fire doors and fire retardent materials. New homes will also be fitted with safety locks, burglar alarms and security lights as standard. • Environmentally Friendly Today’s new homes are built to the latest environmental standards, so they are not only better for the planet but cheaper to run. They are much more energy efficient and generate 60% less carbon dioxide emissions than older homes. This can reduce utility bills by more than £500 a year.
