What’s Inside Welcome to Luther Burbank Center for the Arts! Thank you for choosing to attend this performance. We strive to offer great variety of performances, and the best service to our patrons, and hope you have a fantastic time today. Please alert one of our front-of-house staff if there is something we can do to improve your experience. Your LBC truly has “something for everyone:” a wide range of musical genres from iconic artists like Alison Krauss, Josh Turner, Gipsy Kings and the sold out Norah Jones! Complementing our concerts, other popular events including our free 9th Annual Fiesta de Independencia (presented by Redwood Credit Union), the comedy of Jim Gaffigan and Anjelah Johnson, and the Rodney Strong Vineyards Dance Series Complexions Contemporary Ballet, highlight the diversity of shows. Please visit our website for the full line-up of great performances, and be sure you’re on our e-mail list to hear about new shows added throughout the year. We know how important the arts are to you, how much they enhance your life and we are proud to be your destination for the best entertainment. You will notice some new improvements to the venue as we work to elevate the experience of Your LBC. These were planned before the October fires and we are excited for you to see them. You may also be aware that, although we were fortunate to escape major destruction during the fires, the Center did sustain some damage. We appreciate your understanding during the current renovation and your support as we work through our situation post-fires. Our commitment is steadfast to offer you outstanding experiences and be the community-gathering place we have been for three decades. As our community continues to rebuild, Your LBC is always here as an integral part of that process.

n the wake of the catastrophic Tubbs fire, staff at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts went into high gear to assure the curtain would rise again as quickly and safely as possible at the damaged Santa Rosa landmark. Although flames didn’t reach the 1,600-seat Ruth Finley Person theater, damage to the facility’s east wing was extensive. Insurers are still determining financial losses, while the center has begun fundraising campaigns to fill in the gaps.

Special post-fire donations total $60,000 so far, while the center exceeded its 2017 year-end goals by 6 percent. The center’s immediate challenge, though, was to assure the public, while checking on the welfare of its employees and volunteers. As management reached out to determine the safety of staff and supporters, and as rumors swirled that the nonprofit center had burned to the ground, its new Director of Marketing and Patron Services Anne Abrams fielded scores of media TURN TO LANDMARK » PAGE G18

Mary’s Pizza Shack

Thank you for making arts and education possible in Sonoma County!

Mary’s Pizza Shack was founded in 1959 by Mary Fazio using her father’s recipes and her home kitchen’s pots and pans.

E XCLUSIVE WINE SPONSOR

Mary created a warm and cozy place where friends and family gathered to enjoy her homecooked meals. Everything was made from scratch- from pizza dough and soups to pasta sauces and salad dressings. Nearly sixty years later, Mary’s Pizza Shack still use the same recipes, ingredients, love and care that were learned from Mary. The company is still owned and operated by the family – the third generation handles the day-to-day running of the business in roles ranging from CEO to spearheading charitable The Ernest L. & Ruth W. giving. There are now 19 restaurants located around Northern California, from the original “Shack” in Boyes Hot Springs, to locations in Sonoma, Napa, Marin, Solano, Contra Costa, Shasta and Placer counties. Mary’s family extends well beyond the branches of the family tree. She believed in supporting families, education and the community in ways big and small. There are countless stories of her sending a little extra food to make sure that families who were on a tight budget had enough to feed everyone. That commitment to the community - and especially to the children, has been passed down to Mary’s children and grandchildren who honor it today in a significant way. Today, the Mary’s Pizza Shack team supports a number of schools and youth organizations just as Mary Fazio would. Given LBC’s deep roots in the community—just like Mary’s Pizza Shack—and especially the wide range of LBC programs that impact Sonoma County youth, it seems like a perfect fit for Mary’s to be a part of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office and AB114 Committee

I have grown as a writer and as an artist. It’s been cool to see this culmination of life and lessons and age boiled down into this project and I am really proud of Deep South.” Turner wrote four of the 11 tracks on the highly-anticipated album including the title track and he is impressing fans and critics alike. Rolling Stone declares that Turner, with his “river deep baritone,” delivers an “eagerly awaited album from a country purist.” PEOPLE Magazine says the “Nashville veteran flaunts his deep bass” on Deep South and that the album is “an ode to down-home staples, from finding that perfect love on ‘Hometown Girl’ to savoring the laid-back life on the title track.”

Don’t miss all these great hit songs, a sampling of new music, and a rockin’-the-house-down show. Having played together for nearly three decades, Big Head Todd and The Monsters are putting their energy into promotion and touring around their 11th studio album New World Arisin’ which makes good on its forward-facing title with what might be the brashest rock and roll of their career. The album explores various subgenres, from the funky “Trip” to raging country-rock “Damaged One,” to the expansive storytelling in the Van Morrison/ Springsteen mode of “Wipeout Turn,” a Jimi Hendrix cover “Room Full of Mirrors,” and, in the title track, “New World Arisin” a Charley Patton-inspired tune that ended up with a heavy metal/gospel feel. From selling out Red Rocks Amphitheater nineteen times, playing the Denver Broncos Super Bowl Parade and releasing the single “Blue Sky,” a tribute to the space program (performed as a live wake-up call to the astronauts on the shuttle), the band has seen and done it all. What’s clear is Big Head Todd is one multi-headed rock monster, easily traversing the most accessible hooks and the heaviest grooves.

Symphony Pops kicks off its 2018-19 Season with a powerful show—Ray Charles, Motown & Beyond featuring Ray Charles’ protégé, the electrifying Ellis Hall, “Ambassador of Soul,” and former lead singer for Tower of Power. The vocalist and multi-instrumentalist will join the Santa Rosa Symphony and Maestro Michael Berkowitz to perform hit songs by Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, George Harrison and more. When it comes to music, Ellis Hall does it all. He is a seasoned and accomplished vocalist in possession of a powerful 5-octave range. He is a songwriter, arranger, producer and educator that teaches clinics in which he records all the parts of a song in 45 minutes. Ellis’ first instrument was drums before he went on to master piano, keyboards, guitar and—his favorites—upright and electric bass. Across a career of 40-plus years and counting, Ellis Hall has proven himself as an all-around performer that has entertained audiences on five continents, sharing stages with giants ranging from James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Patti LaBelle and Toby Keith to Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Bobby Womack, George Duke and Sheila E. Art of Dessert Congratulations

Community Gathering Place

The 15th Annual Art of Dessert was a thoroughly enjoyable evening,

Over 30 years ago members of the North Bay community came together to create Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. Since then, we have grown with you to become the community’s gathering place and your arts center. Certainly we are your destination for the many diverse arts and entertainment shows we present—over 200 annually from comedy to concerts, dance to theatrical events. Your children attend our school shows and you explore the artwork and sculpture on campus. Perhaps you’ve selected your Christmas tree or picked the perfect Halloween pumpkin from our South Lot or joined 3,000 of your neighbors for the all-day campus-wide free Fiesta event each September. It’s also here at LBC that many of you have attended a prom or a wedding, a community forum corporate meeting, a job fair, the wedding expo or similar trade event. And likely each week, you may have stopped by the Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers’ Market. LBC is so much a part of Sonoma County—part of your lives in many ways. Think of us as Your LBC—we certainly do. We value your trust in us and always welcome you here. Today you are here to enjoy one of our shows—the signature way to experience LBC. We also want to salute others on campus that are a part of Your LBC: Resident Companies

Our Stories: From Page to Stage

Today is the first time I've seen a play. I learned you can be anything if you work hard.

– Gabriela, 3rd grader Luther Burbank Elementary School

In February 2018, Gabriela and her 3rd grade class went to the LBC to see a play. Not only was it Gabriela’s first play, it made a big impression on her. Each year, our From Page to Stage program — which is funded by LBC members and donors — gives 155 third graders a book and reads it out loud with them in class. A few days later, they’re at the LBC seeing a live performance based on the book. Afterward they get to interview the actors and enjoy a milk and cookies reception. This happens three times during the year — with three different books and performances. The first book Gabriela’s class read, and play they saw, was about Benjamin Franklin.

life. How? Because he believed in himself and never gave up. The play brought this to life for her in a very vivid way. “I learned that if I want to be a teacher or a doctor, I have to work hard,” says Gabriela. “The play showed me first I have to do the right things, not the wrong things.” Many of the students in the From Page to Stage program have had little or no access to the Arts. Some of them are living in very difficult circumstances with few resources. “The play hit on so many important topics for our students,” says 3rd grade teacher Anne West. “They were smiling and leaning forward in their seats. It was having an instantaneous effect on them. This is transformational for some of them.” Gabriela and her class loved that the actor who portrayed Ben Franklin asked them to provide sound effects — like snapping their fingers to create the sound of rain — and invited a few students up to play small roles. They were riveted throughout the play. “The Luther Burbank Center does great things for kids,” says Gabriela. “I will always remember you gave us the book and the play for free.” She’s looking forward to her next two From Page to Stage experiences

“It was good to learn about Ben Franklin,” Gabriela says. She was inspired by the fact that young Ben had experienced a very hard childhood, but overcame it and accomplished a lot of good things in his

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Getting and Giving Great Experiences Alicia Carrasco-Aldoney has been a faithful volunteer at the Center since 2005. As an usher, she enthusiastically collects tickets at the theater door, escorts patrons to their seat location and hands them a Patron Program to peruse before the performance. Did she show you to your seat tonight? About ten years ago, Alicia attended her first performance at LBC, the folk group Quilapayún, from her home country of Chile. She liked how the ushers worked with people and asked about getting involved. A self-professed ‘people person,’ Alicia loves chatting with the guests who attend the shows. “It’s not a chore - I love talking to people!” Working at three school shows within one week this January, Alicia was especially delighted seeing the children visit the Center. She’s proud to be a part of the LBC, because it “exposes children and young people to the arts.” When Alicia first moved to Sonoma County from Chile, she lived with her sister. She eventually got her own place but, sadly, was displaced by the October fire. After all Alicia has been through, we are truly grateful that she still finds time to volunteer with us! Alicia believes The Center is very important for the community and she is thankful the fire damage to the building was minimal. While all of us in Sonoma County try to settle in to a ‘new normal,’ we want to recognize those who continue to give, even when they are in need themselves. One thing that came through after the fires, and continues to resonate, is how important our sense of connection within our community is, and the strength and resilience we all share. If you happen to see Alicia tonight, be sure to give her a big heartfelt ‘Thank you’! We’re happy to have her as part of our family. We couldn’t do it without volunteers like Alicia. We are Your LBC. What is YOUR Legacy? See your investment in the LBC

From where you sit, you can see your investment in the LBC directly and immediately. Your support makes it possible for us to create lasting memories while we enrich, educate and entertain our audiences. Thank you! What would you like your investment to look like years, or even decades, from now? Have you considered the LBC in your legacy plans? If you want to ensure that the LBC will continue here for future generations, consider naming the Center in your will or trust. Then, join the Lamona Johnson Walraven Legacy Society, and let us thank you now for your future investment. To learn more, contact Robin Seltzer at 707.800.7525 or rseltzer@lutherburbankcenter.org.

Lamona Johnson Walraven, a longtime Santa Rosa resident, was a high school teacher and counselor who came of age at a time when most women did not pursue higher education. She earned a master’s degree from UC Berkeley, then shared her love for learning with her family and students, believing that all would thrive through the benefits of an education. Through her bequest, Lamona left a lasting impact on Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, with the largest legacy gift ever received, benefitting both girls and boys through her largesse.

Parking

The Ruth Finley Person Theater is a flexible venue allowing for both seated and open floor configurations. When seated, the 1681-seat venue is the largest fixed seat venue in Sonoma County, and no seat is more than 75 feet from the stage. When main floor seats are removed, the open floor/seated balcony configuration raises the capacity to 2000. The theater’s unique thrust stage design, with no seat more than 75 feet from the stage, provides a level of intimacy between artists and audiences unlike any other in Northern California. For more than 30 years, Luther Burbank Center for the Arts has been the best place to see your favorite performer up close and personal.

Parking is available for persons with handicapped placards. Spaces are located just outside the Center’s north and south entrances.

Parking Convenient onsite parking is included with your ticket purchase.

Please contact us by phone by 707.546.3600 to discuss any special needs you may have, so we can help make your experience exceptional.

Selfie Sticks In the interest in the safety, security, and comfort of all patrons, Selfie Sticks are not allowed inside the building, including at performances.

Wheelchair-accessible restrooms are located on the main floor level.
