Why Your Support Matters
Homes
Luther Locals brings free live performances home
Did you know that when you support a communitybased arts center like LBC, you also support the local and regional artists that help make us an engaged community? When the curtains came down on live performances during the pandemic, your generosity helped LBC show up for local and regional artists by creating Luther Locals, an online streaming concert series. In turn, those artists showed up for all of us by bringing great arts and entertainment right into our homes.
For the first year of the pandemic, LBC hosted 66 weekly Luther Locals concerts, with audiences ranging from 18,000 to more than 35,000 unique views. Starting in July, 2021, the program became a monthly series and has streamed a total of 80 concerts to date.
According to Nick Pulley of the King Street Giants, the opportunity not only gave artists some income to count on, it also offered plenty of non-tangible but equally valued benefits. “The invitation to work with LBC motivated us off the Covid couch,” said Pulley, the sousaphone player for this New Orleans jazz group that performed for Luther Locals in the summer of 2020. “We were all pretty down, but
that opportunity and the exposure to new audiences got us playing and working on projects through the pandemic.” Pulley, who grew up in Sonoma and has been going to LBC shows all his life, also directs the band program at Hillcrest Middle School as a day job.
When singer-songwriter Michelle Lambert played her eclectic mix of pop-rock, Celtic fiddle, Nashville and Northern California vibes for the Luther Locals stage in February 2021, it was her first virtual performance. “It opened some awesome doors for me. It broke the ice by generating 24,000 views and tons of comments, which got me to start posting videos on my own Facebook page. Eventually I was booking more shows.”
Lambert recalled playing in the LBC lobby as a teen and on stage for a variety show here. “Getting the Luther Locals opportunity in the middle of a pretty dark time, when I was losing bookings—it brought in the light. People wanted to hear stories about the songs as much as the songs themselves. That love and connection inspired me to use all that downtime to focus on the art. Creativity needs time and space to write and record a song, but it also needs encouragement. It was such a boost to my career.”
For patrons like Terry Wong Martinez, Luther Locals wrapped the pandemic in a silver lining. After she and her father watched the Awesome Hotcakes Luther Locals concert on May 22, 2020, they spent the rest of the weekend sharing great jazz performance videos with each other. “It was a blast and such a welcome little virtual “vacation” in these times,” she commented. “Thank you, LBC. Thank you, Spike Sikes. Thank you, jazz. Thank you, magical internet technology. And thank you, all the artists who bless this world with their beautiful, healing offerings. ”
With live performances back on the calendar, the Luther Locals program has managed to come down from the “cloud” this past summer when several artists opened for the three main performers during the Rodney Strong Concert Series. With your support, we can continue to expand live stage opportunities like these, while continuing to deliver the streaming concerts you have come to enjoy in your home. “Our roster of artists really came through for us, often purchasing special equipment and setting up recording stages in their backyards and home offices to entertain our community through a rough time,”
said Anita Wiglesworth, Vice President of Programs & Marketing. “We have a unique opportunity now to continue collaborating with them to share their talent and performance power in a live setting.”
Look for Luther Locals artists Josep Siam in November and Guilty Party in December, streaming on our Facebook page @lutherburbankcenter. For more information on Luther Locals, visit our website.
