Luther Burbank C enter for the A r t s | FEBRUA RY – JUNE

Welcome to Luther Burbank Center for the Arts! Thank you for choosing to attend this performance. We strive to offer great variety of performances, the best service to our patrons, and hope you have a fantastic time today. Don’t hesitate to alert one of our front-of-house staff if there is something we can do to improve your experience. As 2018 gears up, Your LBC truly has “something for everyone.” Diverse music from icons Johnny Mathis, Buddy Guy, Mavis Staples and Stephen Stills and Judy Collins in the same season as David Rawlings, Adam Trent or events like Celebrating David Bowie. From the comedy of Jerry Seinfeld and his uncanny observations about life, to the razzmatazz of “Dancing with the Stars” Maks, Val and Peta burning up the stage. And, as always, the Center is the home to stimulating surprises with the thought-provoking Michael Pollan and the innovative, culturally significant, new Versa-Style Dance Company. Please visit our website for the full lineup of great entertainment, and be sure you’re on our e-mail list to hear about new shows added throughout the year. Enjoy the show! We know how important the arts are to you, how much they enhance your life and we are proud to be your destination to enjoy entertainment. You will notice some new improvements to the venue as we work to elevate the experience of Your LBC. These were planned before the recent fires and we endeavor to continue the work. You may also be aware that, although we were fortunate to escape major destruction during the fires, the Center did sustain some damage. We appreciate your understanding during the current renovation and your support as we assess our situation post-fires. Our commitment is steadfast to offer you the best experience and to be the community gathering place we have been for three decades. As our community looks to rebuild, Your LBC is always here as an integral part of all that.

Rodney Strong Vineyards Since 2009, thanks to the strong support of Rodney Strong Vineyards—the exclusive wine partner at LBC—patrons have been able to experience high caliber dance performances. The Rodney Strong Vineyards Dance series stands out as a signature aspect of the Center’s programming. The partnership between Rodney Strong and LBC has a strong foundation in a sense of community that defines both. So it is a natural connection for Winery founder and former dancer Rod Strong and current proprietor Tom Klein to bring their shared passion for the arts to support the Luther Burbank Center which they consider the premiere arts center in Sonoma County. A dancing prodigy from early on, Rod Strong studied at the American School of Ballet under the legendary George Balanchine. After this, Rod headed to Europe and produced Confetti, at Paris’s hottest club, The Lido. In 1952, New Faces premiered on Broadway with Rod dancing the lead, and by this time he was a star. During his time in Europe, Rod developed his interest in wine and fine cuisine. After retiring in 1959, Rod moved to Sonoma County and established Rodney Strong Vineyards as the 13th bonded winery in the county. Tom Klein, a third generation farmer and businessman, purchased Rodney Strong Vineyards in 1989. His integrity, entrepreneurial spirit and love of wine, guided Tom’s work to shepherd the winery onto the world stage. A long-time proponent of Sonoma County and passionate steward of the land, Tom is a leader for sustainable practices in the wine industry. The winery and estate vineyards, the first carbon-neutral winery in Sonoma County, are California Certified Sustainable. Today, Rodney Strong Vineyards is thriving as a family-owned company farming over 1,400 acres across 14 estate vineyards, all in Sonoma County. David Rawlings

8PM

Acclaimed songwriter and guitarist David Rawlings has released his freshly pressed third album, Poor David’s Almanack, via Acony Records. For Poor David’s Almanack, Rawlings leaves the Dave Rawlings Machine moniker behind and serves up a wry mixture of acoustic and electric music rich in ageless American vernacular. The album of ten new songs was crafted by studio wizards Ken Scott (Beatles, David Bowie) and Matt Andrews on analog tape during a week of sessions at legendary Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee. Rawlings and longtime compatriot Gillian Welch, joined together with Willie Watson, Paul Kowert, Brittany Haas, Ketch Secor, and Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith of Dawes to produce an album for all seasons. The touring iteration of Rawlings’ band, the all-star Dave Rawlings Machine, will embark on the first leg of a national tour starting in August to support Poor David’s Almanack, as well as perform favorites from the first two Dave Rawlings Machine records, A Friend of A Friend and Nashville Obsolete. This release marks the 8th studio collaboration between Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Their creative partnership spans over two decades and includes the GRAMMY-nominated The Harrow and the Harvest (2011), the much lauded and latest Rawlings release, Nashville Obsolete, which landed on numerous 2015 year-end best-of lists, and the 2001 GRAMMY-nominated masterpiece Time (The Revelator). All releases are available on Acony Records, the independent label they founded in 2001. In recognition of their remarkable career, Welch and Rawlings were honored with the Americana Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting in 2015 and the Berklee American Masters Award in 2016.

Olivia Newton-John

8PM

With a career spanning more than five decades, Olivia Newton-John was destined for stardom when she first won a talent contest on a popular TV show, in Melbourne, Australia. By fifteen she had formed an all-girl group called Sol Four and, in 1963, Olivia was appearing on TV and pop music programs in Australia. Her U.S. album debut, "Let Me Be There," produced her first top ten single. The Academy of Country Music honored her as Most Promising Female Vocalist and she received a Grammy Award as Best Country Vocalist. With more than 100 million albums sold, Olivia’s successes include four Grammy Awards, numerous Country Music, American Music and People’s Choice Awards, ten #1 hits including “Physical,” which topped the charts for ten consecutive weeks, and over 15 top 10 singles. In November 2015, Billboard Magazine listed “Physical” at #8 on their Top 100 Songs of All Time list and in 2010 listed it as “The Sexiest Song of All Time.” In addition, in 2015 Olivia was ranked #20 on Billboard’s “Greatest of All Time Hot 100 Artists.” In 1978, her co-starring role with John Travolta in “Grease” catapulted Olivia into superstardom. This film’s best-selling soundtrack featured the duets "You’re The One That I Want" and "Summer Nights," with Travolta, as well as her mega-hit, "Hopelessly Devoted To You." To date, “Grease” remains the most successful movie musical in history. Her other feature film credits include “Funny Things Happen Down Under,” “Tomorrow,” “Xanadu,” “Two Of A Kind,” “It’s My Party,” “Sordid Lives,” “Score: A Hockey Musical,” and “A Few Best Men.”

Following the triumphant sold-out start of the tour overseas in France and the U.K., CELEBRATING DAVID BOWIE continues across North America for a 27-date trek. More than just a mere salute, CELEBRATING DAVID BOWIE keeps Bowie’s music alive with musicians who worked closely with him throughout his career and other top musicians greatly influenced by him. Buddy Guy with special guest Brandy Zdan

A performance by a music icon: Buddy Guy, ranked #23 in in Rolling Stone Magazine's “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time," is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He has received multiple awards including 7 GRAMMY Awards—one for Lifetime Achievement, 34 Blues Music Awards (the most any artist has received), the Billboard Magazine Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement, a Kennedy Center Honor, and the Presidential National Medal of Arts. At age 80, Buddy Guy was a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and is a living link to the city’s halcyon days of electric blues. Buddy Guy’s 2015 studio album Born To Play Guitar debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums chart. It was the follow-up to his 2013 first-ever double disc release, Rhythm & Blues, which also debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums chart. The album featured guest appearances by Van Morrison, Joss Stone, Kim Wilson and Billy Gibbons. His incendiary style left its mark on guitarists from Jimmy Page to John Mayer. “He was for me what Elvis was probably like for other people,” said Eric Clapton at Guy’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2005. “My course was set, and he was my pilot.” These many years later, Buddy Guy is a genuine American treasure and one of the final surviving connections to an historic era in the country’s musical evolution.

I'm With Her—Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, Aoife O’Donovan: See You Around Tour

A band of extraordinary chemistry and exquisite musicianship, I’m With Her features Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O’Donovan. Collectively, the multi-Grammy-Award-winners have released seven solo efforts, cofounded two seminal bands (Nickel Creek and Crooked Still), and contributed to critically acclaimed albums from a host of esteemed artists. But from its very first moments, their full-length debut See You Around reveals the commitment to creating a wholly unified band sound. With each track born from close songwriting collaboration, I’m With Her builds an ineffable magic from their finespun narratives and breathtaking harmonies. The result is an album both emotionally raw and intricate, revealing layers of meaning and insight within even the most starkly adorned track. Co-produced by Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams, Laura Marling, Paul McCartney) and the band and recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in a tiny English village near Bath, See You Around delivers a warmly textured yet stripped-down sound that proves both fresh and timeless. To achieve the album’s intimate feel, I’m With Her recorded live in the tight confines of the Wood Room, all three members performing in the same room without monitors or headphones. With its piercingly lyricism, See You Around also finds I’m With Her showing the uncompromising honesty of their songwriting. That intensity is heightened by the band’s effortless harmonizing, which the New York Times has praised as “sweetly ethereal, or as tightly in tandem as country sibling teams like the Everly Brothers, or as hearty as mountain gospel.”

Versa-Style Dance Company Pre-show discussion at 7pm

“The most vibrant elements of hip-hop culture— the spirit of inclusion, innovation, reverence and authenticity...” “It’s like a live music video, pulsing and driving, quick cutting and dissolving, right before our eyes. It is, in a matter of words, magical.” Versa-Style create highly energetic work that fuses dances that are culturally significant to our community. These forms include Hip-Hop styles such as 90s Hip-Hop, House, Popping, Locking, Whacking and Boogaloo, and Afro-Latin styles such as Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia and AfroCuban to name a few. As a reaction to the widespread media misrepresentation of these dance forms, Versa-Style specifically aims to perform for the youth of Los Angeles to instill the roots, history, and social and political issues surrounding the art of our generation. Hip-Hop breaks color lines by creating a forum where people come together for a common passion rather than grouping themselves by race or socio-economic backgrounds. VersaStyle demonstrates freedom of expression, freedom of individuality, hard work, selfdiscipline and dedication to the form. Versa-Style is a non-profit organization and dance ensemble that consists of committed and conscientious artists representing the diversity and beautiful complexity of Los Angeles.

Mavis Staples

8PM

"Staples’ voice has a strength and endurance not heard in years.” - The New Yorker "A subtly provocative commentary on the country’s troubling, unrestful state, “If All I Was Was Black” is yet another high mark in the long and eventful career of Ms. Staples, who has seen much and knows what it means.” - Wall St. Journal Mavis Staples is an alchemist of American music, and has continuously crossed genre lines like no musician since Ray Charles. Weaving herself into the very fabric of gospel, soul, folk, pop, R&B, blues, rock, and even hip hop over the better part of the last 60 years, the iconic singer has seen and sung through so many changes, always rising up to meet every road unwaveringly. At the beginning of her eighth decade of singing truth, Mavis Staples has delivered a new recording, If All I Was Was Black, ten songs about America today, where the present is filled with ghosts of the past. This is her third collaboration with songwriter and producer Jeff Tweedy and marks the first time Tweedy has composed an entire album of original songs for Mavis' legendary voice and a nation she's uniquely poised to address.

Following a smash hit first tour, Maks and Val, the hottest stars of ABC’s Dancing With The Stars are back with an all new spectacular show and this time the family has grown. Joining them in their brand new show Confidential, the stunningly talented, Peta Murgatroyd, two time Dancing With The Stars Mirror Ball champion, actress and Mrs. Maks Chmerkovskiy. The trio, along with a dazzling cast of the industry’s best dancers are coming to the LBC, performing in 49 cities across America this spring. "Maks, Val & Peta Live On Tour: Confidential" will be a spectacular dance show, driven by a narrative of true family life and love stories. Honest and intimate, the stars will be revealing their closest secrets, hopes and dreams in their own inimitable style. The show will inspire and delight, combining the elegance of the ballroom, some confidential revelations and a true love story. Maksim Chmerkovskiy said, “Our way was just the beginning of the story. This time I’m a husband, a father, in the best shape of my professional career and still learning on and off the dance floor every day. I’ve had two of the most eventful years of my life and I can’t wait to use my favorite medium to express what’s on my mind and in my heart. Sharing a stage with my wife and my brother, what could be better than that!” Peta added; ”Usually, I’m acting out a love story through dance. This time there will be no acting, and we have the unique opportunity to perform a genuine love story. I found the power of Our Way to be the relationship between Maks and Val, and this time I hope to cut in on that love story! What have I got myself into!” Confidential is their most honest show yet, revealing secrets, hopes and dreams of these artists. The show will inspire and delight, and by learning a little more about Maks, Val and Peta you might learn a little bit more about yourselves. You are invited to come and be part of the family for an evening, to celebrate dancing, love and life.

Stephen Stills & Judy Collins

7PM

50 years ago, singer-songwriter Stephen Stills met singer-songwriter Judy Collins, known for her piercing ocean blue eyes. Their tumultuous love affair would later be immortalized by Stills with his composition “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, performed by Crosby, Stills & Nash on their landmark debut. Both artists would go on to shape modern music with visionary approaches, but Stills and Collins’ short fiery union remains a transformative era for the two artists. Now, the two icons of folk will celebrate the golden anniversary of their formative time together. Their joint tour marks the first time ever Stills and Collins have been onstage together. For this once-in-a-lifetime experience, the two music legends will pull from their rich catalogs, debut songs from their upcoming album (out September 2017), and share warm and intimate stories from their journeys and the 1960s folk and Laurel Canyon scenes they helped build.

The Magic of Adam Trent

8PM

“Seeing is dis-believing!” – New York Times. Produced by the creative team behind The Illusionists, the world’s best-selling touring magic show, The Magic Of Adam Trent (AdamTrent.com) is an immersive entertainment extravaganza of magic, comedy and music designed to entertain the entire family. Showcasing his “futuristic” brand of magic, Trent has mesmerized live audiences around the globe, in person and as a featured guest on “America’s Got Talent,” “The Today Show,” “Ellen,” “Rachael Ray Show” and Disney Channel among countless other TV appearances. The 32-year-old also stars in his own 10-episode TV series “The Road Trick” on Red Bull TV. Trent inaugurated the first two years of The Illusionists’ record–breaking Broadway runs, which served as a launching pad for his own live show and tour. “I am so excited to hit the road and bring an entirely new show to audiences around the world,” says Trent, who has always thought that magic should be entertaining first, and tricky second. He doesn’t want people to remember “tricks” as much as the laughs and memories made with the performance. “This will be a show like you’ve never seen.”

YOUR LBC

Community Gathering Place Over 30 years ago members of the North Bay community came together to create Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. Since then, we have grown with you to become the community’s gathering place and your arts center. Certainly we are your destination for the many diverse arts and entertainment shows we present—over 200 annually from comedy to concerts, dance to theatrical events. Your children attend our school shows and you explore the artwork and sculpture on campus. Perhaps you’ve selected your Christmas tree or picked the perfect Halloween pumpkin from our South Lot or joined 3,000 of your neighbors for the all-day campus-wide free Fiesta event each September. It’s also here at LBC that many of you have attended a prom or a wedding, a community forum corporate meeting, a job fair, the wedding expo or similar trade event. And likely each week, you may have stopped by the Santa Rosa Original Certified Farmers’ Market. “LBC” is so much a part of Sonoma County—part of your lives in many ways. Think of us as Your LBC—we certainly do. We value your trust in us and always welcome you here. Today you are here to enjoy one of our shows—the signature way to experience LBC. We also want to salute others on campus that are a part of Your LBC: Resident Companies

Our Stories: Big Hearts Expand Young Minds

Shows at the Luther Burbank Center are more real than the movies. You get to imagine more, and it’s more creative. – Angel, 14

actually see it, hear it and experience it. This was especially beneficial for my class because for 90% of them English is their second language.”

Excited exclamations like this come often from so many of the 40,000 children, ages 4-18, who attend the school shows presented by Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. Thanks to our members, donors, and sponsors, LBC is the place these young people come to experience the arts, some for the very first time. Each year, Luther Burbank Center for the Arts presents 30 live music, dance and theater shows as daytime performances for school groups. These are more than field trips and outings—our school shows align with and support state `mandated curriculum in all core education subjects. So, while it’s true that the children are experiencing the magic of live performance and the joy the arts bring, we are particularly proud that the heart of our School Shows program is education through the arts. “You don't think the way you used to think after seeing a show at LBC,” is how one of our students describes it.

Using humor, drama, song, dance, light shows and technology, the shows teach the students about all verbs, nouns, pronouns and the other elements of grammar, as well as introducing them to concepts in science or historical subjects. Over 40% of the students who attend received no-cost or reduced-price tickets. And that’s because of those of you who support us. It is due to the generous donations from our members, donors and sponsors that LBC is able to create these programs. Because of people with big hearts who want to help, we can expand thousands of young minds. “Students are definitely more engaged as a result,” is how the teachers view LBC School Shows. “High-quality shows like this expose them to all kinds of creative learning and thinking.” All these accolades expressed by teachers and students as they are leaving a performance at LBC encourage us, and hopefully our members and donors, to continue offering School Shows. One student sums it up best: “They inspire you and help you imagine doing different things!”

“The show was a fun and engaging way for kids to learn grammar,” observes one of our partner teachers. “They could

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Getting and Giving Great Experiences Alicia Carrasco-Aldoney has been a faithful volunteer at the Center since 2005. As an usher, she enthusiastically collects tickets at the theater door, escorts patrons to their seat location and hands them one of these Patron Programs to peruse before the performance. Did she show you to your seat tonight? About ten years ago, Alicia first attended a performance at LBC of the folk group Quilapayún, from her home country of Chile. She liked how the ushers worked with people and asked about getting involved. A self-professed ‘people person,’ Alicia loves chatting with the guests who attend the shows. “It’s not a chore - I love talking to people!” she exclaims. Working at three school shows within one week this January, Alicia was especially delighted seeing the children visit the Center. She’s proud to be a part of the LBC, because it “exposes children and young people to the arts” and we are happy to have her as part of our family. When Alicia first moved here from Chile, she lived with her sister. She eventually got her own place but, sadly, was displaced by the October fire. Now that she is living again with her sister and after all Alicia has been through, we are truly grateful that she still finds time to volunteer with us. Alicia believes The Center is very important for the community and she is thankful the fire damage to the building was minimal. While all of us in Sonoma County try to settle in to a ‘new normal,’ we want to recognize those who continue to give, even when they are in need themselves. One thing that came through after the fires, and continues to resonate, is how important our sense of connection within our community is, and the strength and resilience we all share. If you happen to see Alicia tonight, be sure to give her a big hug and a heartfelt ‘Thank you.’ We couldn’t do it without volunteers like Alicia. We are Your LBC. Interested in having your own great experiences as a volunteer for the LBC? Visit lutherburbankcenter.org/volunteer today!

See your investment in the LBC

Lamona Johnson Walraven, a longtime Santa Rosa resident, was a high school teacher and counselor who came of age at a time when most women did not pursue higher education. She earned a master’s degree from UC Berkeley, then shared her love for learning with her family and students, believing that all would thrive through the benefits of an education. Through her bequest, Lamona left a lasting impact on Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, with the largest legacy gift ever received, benefitting both girls and boys through her largesse.

PLANNED GIVING

L R AV E N L E G A C Y S O C I E T Y

What is YOUR Legacy? From where you sit, you can see your investment in the LBC directly and immediately. Your support makes it possible for us to create lasting memories while we enrich, educate and entertain our audiences. Thank you! What would you like your investment to look like years, or even decades, from now? Have you considered the LBC in your legacy plans? If you want to ensure that the LBC will continue here for future generations, consider naming the Center in your will or trust. Then, join the Lamona Johnson Walraven Legacy Society, and let us thank you now for your future investment. To learn more, contact Robin Seltzer at 707.800.7525 or rseltzer@lutherburbankcenter.org.
