C
yprus may not have an ‘Awards Season’ in the US film industry sense of the term but there is no shortage of awards of all kinds that are presented throughout the year to companies and individuals active in virtually every field. Earlier this month the 3rd annual Business Leader Awards, organised by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CCCI) and IMH, were presented during a Gala Dinner at the Carob Mill complex in Limassol. Unlike most business awards in Cyprus, they focus on individuals rather than companies, with the recipients being selected for much more than their ability to manage a successful firm or organisation. The CCCI Business Leader Awards show recognition and appreciation to these outstanding members of the Cypriot business community for their long-lasting commitment to business excellence and leadership and, as CCCI President Phidias Pilides has noted, the objective is for the awards to “act as illuminating examples to prompt new generations of entrepreneurs to follow similar responsible and serious business behaviour and actions.” Our cover story (page 22) profiles this year’s winners and features photos of the recipients themselves, as well as photos from the ceremony and The Gala Dinner. The theme of excellence is one that crops up throughout this issue, in interviews with people from the whole spectrum of the professional services sector: Nicholas Hadjiyiannis, Cooperative Central Bank (page 48), Symeon Symeou, Piraeus Bank Cyprus (page 40), Ioannis Demetriades , Horwath DSP (page 46), Marios Eliades, Eliades & Partners (page 56), and George Ioulianos, Cyprus Fiduciary Association (page 60), and others such as Jacqueline Anastassiades of the pharmaceutical company MSD in Cyprus (page 44) and Valentina Kislaya, founder of Leaders & Image (page 52). And continuing the twin themes of awards and excellence, our selection of the Books of the Year for 2016 comprises the winners of 10 of the world’s most respected literary prizes. As this is the last issue of Gold for 2016, we are already looking to 2017 with what diplomats call ‘cautious optimism’. It could be the most momentous year in the country’s history if the January talks end in agreement and the people vote to accept and implement it. On the other hand, those of us who have been close observers of the Cyprus Problem over the past four decades have seen hopes dashed at the last minute on more than one occasion, so there is also a touch of fear of disappointment once John Vickers, more. If the two leaders and their respective teams find the required Chief Editor level of excellence, we should be in for a very exciting time. Happy holidays! john@imhbusiness.com 8 | GOLD | The Business Magazine of Cyprus
