Those who make the InC into happening
Hello Everyone! Well here we are! Once again we have made it into November. It has been a wonderfully exciting year, and we will be wrapping up 2013 with a month long celebration! As you look through THE ECHO this month, you will see an abundance of great events and fundraiser where you can see all your friends before we all start leaving for our Christmas holidays. Our General Meeting had a great turn out at the beautiful CHACARA TROPICAL in Barra last Tuesday. It was the moment when our members elected and welcomed our new Executive Board for 2014. A big thanks to the folks at the CHACARA for sponsoring a lovely cafezinho and contributing two beautiful raffle prizes. Our new board is now working side by side with the 2013 board to insure a smooth transition in January and adding extra energy to our end of year celebrations. Our new Events Director, Valeria Lobo, will be opening her home with its stunning panoramic view of Botafogo Bay, twice this month. First, for a Cafezinho on Tuesday, November the 5th and then again Saturday, November 23rd for our InC Christmas Party; French Chef David Mansaud will be preparing something very special, Cachaca Leblon will set up a Caipirinha bar, and we will have a very cool DJ to play lots of your favorite dance music. Sign up now as space is limited!
As you go through THE ECHO, our communications team will tell you all about these events and many more that you won't want to miss. On a sadder note within the next month or so we will be saying good bye to five special ladies who have contributed so much to the InC. We will be saying goodbye to Jolanda Maltha, our very dedicated Communications Director, who has worked so hard over the years, not only leaving her mark on the beautiful ECHO but is also the record holder for hosting Cafezinhos. Come say good bye to her as she gives her last one on Thursday, November 21st. Please note that we have changed the day as we have a long holiday weekend just before. Carolyn Stacey, will be greatly missed as she moves back to the States. She so generously helped with the organization of refreshments for our Barra Cafezinhos and the General Meetings. She also organized our raffles at events which make such a difference to the Charities at the end of the year. Rachel Corrie and Kate Corbet will be leaving shortly for the UK. Both have been very active with our Charities and will be greatly missed. Patricia Prinsen will also be leaving for France just as summer is starting here. She has left her mark as our wine consultant this year and was the inspiration behind our Wine and Cheese Fundraisers.
Petra and Rainer Verhoeven will be hosting our 3rd Gourmet Cooking Class and Candlelight Dinner in their magnificent house in Barra on Saturday, In the name of the InC I would like to wish all of you November 9th, this event fills up quickly, as many the best of luck in the world and hopefully if you who have attended the previous dinners have alcome back to Brazil you will visit us. ready signed up so get in touch soon if you would like to attend. My best to you all, On Saturday, the 30th of November the InC will be hosting a Christmas Tree Lighting on Lagoa Fundraiser. This is the official start to the Carioca holiday season, and will be accompanied by a spectacular show of fireworks. Jane and Les Wood will be our hosts for this wonderful party.

Pedra Bonita
Pedra Bonita—one of the top 5 viewpoints of Rio de Janeiro If you’re visiting Rio de Janeiro, and need a break from the bustling touristy areas, as well as some fresh air, Pedra Bonita is a place with exceptionally beautiful views of the city of Rio de Janeiro and the Tijuca forest and it only takes an easy 20-30 minute hike . The start of the trail leading to Pedra Bonita is located right next to the parking space of the hang-gliding ramp of São Conrado, so before or after the hike a visit to the ramp is a definite bonus. How to get to Pedra Bonita From Zona Sul (Copacabana, Ipanema…) to the start of the trail is about 18 km (see map below) or 20 km if you take the more scenic coastal road, and depending on the day of the week and the time, it could take some time to get there… so plan accordingly. Once you arrive at the parking of the hang-gliding ramp, go back about 200m to find the entrance to the trail, which is indicated with a sign saying “Trilha da Pedra Bonita”. According to the sign, the average time to complete the trail is 25 minutes, but if you set a good pace, you can do less than that. The hike The trail is 1.5 km long and climbs the whole time, taking you from +/500 to almost 700m. It is a relatively easy trail, with natural steps (mostly formed by tree roots) where the inclination is too high, so it isn’t more difficult than climbing a staircase. When you get to the top, you have a most privileged view of the city of Rio de Janeiro: The tijuca forest, Rocinha (the biggest favela in South America), The beach of São Conrado (where the hanggliders land, Christ the Redeemer, Barra da Tijuca, Pão de Açucar, Pedra da Gávea (another great hike on my bucket list)… all of it is spread out in front of you. Of course, the best time to enjoy these views, is on a clear day, and as mentioned earlier, while you’re there, why not take advantage of the fact that the hang-gliding ramp is right there… It’s really cool to see the people take off with their gliders or delta wings. Maybe you even get tempted to try it yourself. Oh, and the ramp also has a bathroom and a small bar where you can have something to drink… By: Raf Kiss - Angloinfo Rio de Janeiro.

Charity
It has been a very busy and successful year for all the volunteers who work on the charity committee! Our six sponsored charities in 2013 have received funding for computers and computer accessories, a wheelchair, educational toys and tables and chairs for a play room in an orphanage, sound equipment, water filters and bus hire for cultural excursions. We have more than 36 InC members visiting and working with these ONG's every week. Now it is time to start looking forward to the new year... From this November, the Charity Committee will be accepting applications for funding for 2014. If you have a favorite charity and would like to recommend them for sponsorship, then you can download the application forms from our website ( click on Charity committee and go to "Nominate a Charity project") or you can contact the Charity director for the application forms by emailing to cc@incrio.org.br or Robyn Thompson - retho55@hotmail.com By law, projects sponsored by the InC must be established and duly registered charitable organizations with a successful track record serving metropolitan Rio de Janeiro. Please note that all ONGs must be recommended by an InC member and they must all have a current CPNJ. We will consider any worthy charity but priority is typically given to projects that target education and healthcare for those who have few resources. Donations are not made to individuals or to individual families. We are also looking for ONGs where there is the opportunity for our members to work as volunteers. It is a big help if applications can be submitted in English; however, we realize not all charities have this ability and we have volunteers ready to translate. You can send completed applications to: cc@incrio.org.br or Robyn Thompson - retho55@hotmail.com Please note: Deadline for submission is Thursday February 27, 2014.
