inca tours will show you the real africa Africa is colour and contrast—from the sands and ancient monuments of the North to the rainforests of the Centre; from the savannahs, teeming with wildlife in the East to the unrivalled scenic beauty of the South. southern africa Southern Africa has a lot to offer, from Cape Town with its ideal location and Cape Dutch architecture, to Namibia’s spectacular scenery, the unique wildlife and waterways of the Okavango Delta; Chobe National Park with its concentration of Elephant in the dry season and last but certainly not least, the mighty Victoria Falls, bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe.

east africa Kenya and Tanzania are legendary for their superb safari experiences as millions of plains’ animals undertake their annual migration through the Masai Mara National Reserve, Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Also high on the experience agenda is a visit to see the Gorillas and a stay on the exotic “Spice Island” of Zanzibar.

equatorial africa Equatorial Africa is a core region of the continent which includes Equatorial Guinea, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo (often simply referred to as “the Congo” and not to be confused with the Democratic Republic of Congo or DRC) and Gabon. Often overlooked, this vast and truly wild equatorial region, with its wide range of landscapes and habitat, is home to an incredible diversity of life. Forest Elephant, Forest Buffalo, Leopard, Bongo, Giant Forest Hog and Hippopotamus live alongside Western Lowland Gorilla and Chimpanzee. The best country from which to access this region is the Congo.

egypt Egypt is home to some of the most recognisable landmarks in the world: the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, Tutankhamun’s Gold, as well as the life giving Nile River. Not to be missed is the Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel, undoubtedly the most magnificent temple in all of Egypt.

with inca tours, you are in very good hands Inca Tours, a destination specialist, is very proud to have over 35 years experience organising small group journeys to various parts of the world. Just imagine what we can do for you? we have done all the planning for you In planning a visit to a diverse region, one not only has to decide what to see and how much time to spend in each location but just as importantly, what to avoid. Tours must be planned to satisfy special interests, whether they be the majestic scenery, dynamic cities, the monuments of past civilisations, the colourful people who call it home, meeting new friends or just having a good time! We do all this and more. Our tours are planned and operated by people who know and above all, love Africa.

your tour leader is there for you Each component of your journey is hosted by one of our experienced tour leaders. They are in turn, assisted by our expert English-speaking local guides, drivers and ground handlers to ensure your journey is as seamless as possible and you get to remember it for all the right reasons. As our group sizes are small, you have regular access to your tour leader and your local guides. This usually occurs on a one-on-one basis, so you get the absolute most from your holiday.

guaranteed departures & group sizes allow you to book with confidence Unfortunately today, many tour companies have in their fine print that the tour may be cancelled or may not be fully escorted without a minimum number of clients. We know this uncertainty causes many problems for travellers, so for all Inca Sensations Tours and Inca Gold Tours, we guarantee that the tours will operate and that they will be fully escorted with two or more guests. In the same way that we guarantee our departures and tour leader, we also place a cap of only eighteen guests on each of our Sensations and Gold Tours. For financial reasons, most other tour companies do not do this. We believe your tour should give you the opportunity to connect with the people and places you visit and enable your tour leader to get to know you personally, not just by a name tag. This is only possible if travelling in a small group, not in the large crowds often seen in other tour groups.

with inca tours’ small groups, you won’t miss a thing We were one of the pioneers in small group travel, boasting more than 35 years of continuous service. You are in very good hands when you choose to travel with us, as our small groups mean you won’t miss out on a thing. inca tours has led the way & still does For many destinations, we were the first or one of the first to take small group journeys into what was considered “out of the way” places. Our tour leaders and office staff regularly visit these destinations, as well as new ones, which ensures that our destination knowledge is always up-to-date and second to none. Because of this we are able to plan and execute the very best itineraries, many of which are now emulated by those who have followed our lead. Regular destination updates also mean we are equipped to make changes if any aspect of the journey has changed or if better options have become available.

no gimmicks! Because of our extensive knowledge, we do not have the “free choice” gimmicks that others offer. If it worth doing or seeing, we simply include it!

no need for headsets Up to forty people on a tour is not a small group! With a maximum of only18 guests, our groups are intimate and small which means there is no need for clumsy and uncomfortable headsets to allow you to hear what the local guide or tour leader is saying. With us you hear it directly from “the horse’s mouth” as they say. Our small group sizes also mean that it is much easier for you to ask questions and be heard and more importantly, answered.

inca tours’ free choice meals Where ever possible, we arrange for the included lunches and dinners to be enjoyed at local restaurants, with guests having free choice from the menu and thus avoiding limited “set menus” or buffets. Many of these restaurants are chosen because of their location of because of their quality and style, which turns the dining experience into a highlight in itself. Only touring with small groups provides the flexibility in this area and subsequently, greatly enhances your Africa experience.

the picturesque cape of good hope, south africa Cape Town is so much more than just a city. Its harbour is considered to be one of the top three most beautiful waterfronts in the world. The City sits on the doorstep of the pristine Cape of Good Hope. old & new cape town Old and New Cape Town offer many highlights, including the Castle of Good Hope from 1666, the historic Malay Quarter, magnificent Table Mountain, the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens and the Victoria and Albert Waterfront, where the Inca Sensations and Inca Gold Tour hotels are located.

cape peninsula, gloriously spectacular The Cape Peninsula is a spectacular area, with its glorious views of the Twelve Apostles; the fishing village of Hout Bay; Cape Point, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet; the False Bay Coastline; Simon’s Town; Boulders Beach, Fishoek fishing village and last but not least, Mount Muizenberg.

robben island, of nelson mandela fame The notorious Robben Island is but a short fast ferry ride from the Cape Town Waterfront. Formerly a political prison, now a National Monument, the island still houses the maximum-security cell which was Nelson Mandela’s place of incarceration for most of his adult life. To visit is a moving experience.

stellenbosch & franschhoek are gems South Africa’s fertile Western Cape is a treasury of rustic beauty and sprawling estates, shaded by giant oaks. Here you find Stellenbosch, South Africa’s second oldest town and quaint Franschhoek—absolute gems! Both exhibit a gracious blend of18th Century Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian buildings.

the picturesque “garden route” The “Garden Route” is a picturesque stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa. It stretches from Heidelberg in the Western Cape to Storms River in the neighbouring Eastern Cape. The name comes from the diverse vegetation found here and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. It includes places such as Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and George, the route’s largest city.

victoria falls & the ancient okavango delta Follow in Livingston’s footsteps as you experience the mighty Victoria Falls. Relax as you explore the crystal clear waterways of the pristine Okavango Delta, one of the absolute gems of Africa. the mighty victoria falls The majestic Victoria Falls is known as “The Smoke that Thunders” or “Mosi-oa-Tunya” in the local indigenous language. It is also famous as being “the Greatest Curtain of Falling Water in the World”. The falls were ‘discovered’ by David Livingstone, an explorer and doctor. A Henry Stanley had been sent to find Livingstone (believed lost), by the New York Herald in1869. As you may know, when Stanley found him, he uttered the now famous phrase: “Dr Livingstone, I presume?” The falls form part of the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia and can be viewed from either side. It is usually better however to view them from the Zimbabwean side during the low flow period (August to November) and from the Zambian side during the high flow period (January to April).

the ancient okavango delta Botswana’s ancient Okavango Delta is a place like no other! This wildlife filled paradise is made up of a vast series of crystal clear channels and waterways. The area encompasses a necklace of islands dotted with palms, figs, ebony and knobthorn, and is home to a myriad of birds, plants and animals. The nature of the habitat means it is the perfect place to experience the diversity of species found within the Okavango Delta. The permanent luxury tented camp we utilise on the Gold Tour is a hidden jewel set on a river in the southwest of the Okavango Delta. Situated on a private concession that allows guided walks, mokoro excursions and night drives, in addition to game drives, the options are almost limitless. This allows for a great safari experience which is very, very different from safari experiences in other parts of Africa.

east africa safari, the perfect game viewing experience Home to the world’s Safari Icons: the Masai Mara National Reserve, Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater, East Africa is a must see for any wildlife enthusiast or photographer. masai mara national reserve Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya is renowned for The Great Migration, where millions of plains’ animals undertake their annual circuit over a 500 km round trip, extending down into Tanzania. The migration tends to follow a similar route each year but the timing can vary by a month in either direction, so predicting where the animals will be on a particular day in the future is not possible. For this reason our tours cover most of the areas the animals frequent, thus almost guaranteeing that you will find them somewhere while in East Africa.

serengeti national park Tanzania too is legendary for its safari opportunities as millions of plains’ animals undertake their annual migration. Serengeti National Park is therefore also home to the Great Migration for a very large part of the year. The migration is the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet!

ngorongoro crater Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania is a caldera. One of the Wonders of the World and a designated UNESCO Listed World Heritage Site, it is a veritable Noah’s Ark! 17 km in diameter, 260 square km in area and 670 metres deep, it has a variable population of large animals including Wildebeest, Lion, Cheetah, Rhino, Elephant, Zebra, Hyena and Pink Flamingo. Our lodge sits on the lip of the crater and has commanding views down into it, probably the most breathtaking in East Africa!

lake manyara Ernest Hemingway said that Tanzania’s Lake Manyara was the “loveliest lake in Africa”. This beautiful shallow lake covers an area of 230 square km and is situated in Lake Manyara National Park, which is 330 square km in size. The national park lies between the wall of the Great Rift Valley and Lake Manyara itself and is ideal for game drives. It is famous for its tree-climbing lions, baboons, large elephant herds, giraffes and hot springs.

africa, much more than just the great migration Don’t miss out on the lesser known gems of the area, including Congo, Rwanda and the island of Zanzibar. These destinations can provide some of the most thrilling, yet poignant and moving experiences in your life. congo, home to gorillas & chimpanzees The Republic of Congo is made up of a rich landscape of falls, wetlands and rapids, with the northern country distinguished by huge tracts of virgin forest and a diversity of wildlife. It is characterised by dense rainforest and is noted for its Western Lowland Gorillas and Chimpanzees. In fact, the country has over 80% of the world’s population! Outside the French-flavoured capital of Brazzaville, attractions include Odzala National Park, one of Africa’s least known tropical ecosystems, covering 13,600 square km of pristine rainforest and holding globally significant populations of Forest Elephants.

rwanda, also home to gorillas & friends Rwanda is also one of the best and easiest places in Africa to see Gorilla and Golden Monkey. It is dominated by a central plateau made up of steep mountains and deep valleys and is therefore also known as “Land of thousand hills”. On the western side of the plateau is found Rwanda’s principal geographic feature; the famous Virunga chain of volcanoes which extend towards the DRC and Ugandan borders. These volcanoes form part of the Albertine Rift Valley and it is here that one finds Rwanda’s main attraction: Gorillas and Golden Monkeys! Our Rwanda excursions won’t disappoint. Rwanda has a rich history and culture. It was long regarded as a mysterious kingdom with a legendary military force and as a result, was carefully bypassed by Arab traders and the great Nile Explorers. Together with Burundi and Tanzania, Rwanda formed part of the German East African Colony.

zanzibar, the “spice island” of east africa The exotic Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar or “Unguja”, which is its correct name, with Zanzibar being the island’s main town, boasts a rich, varied and sometimes dark history. This history comes from many influences, having been ruled at different times by Omanis, Arabs, Europeans and now Africans. Zanzibar is often referred to as the “Spice Island” and for good reason, as not only are many spices grown here but a number, now grown in other parts of the world, originated here. With its UNESCO World Heritage Listed Old Stone Town and magnificent palm fringed beaches, this mystical spice island has much to offer the visitor.

namibia, malawi & zambia, off africa’s beaten track Often overlooked for better known destinations, Malawi, Namibia & Zambia have so many unique experiences to offer including crystal clear Lake Malawi, as well as other magnificent wildlife areas. namibia, home of the himba people Namibia is home to Etosha National Park, one of Africa’s most important game sanctuaries. The birdlife here is prolific and thousands of wild animals such as Blue Wildebeest, Springbok, Zebra, Kudu, Giraffe, Cheetah, Leopard, Lion and Elephant are also found here. Namibia is home to the Himba, a semi-nomadic tribe. Known for their proud yet friendly stature, the women are noted for their unusual beauty and intricate hairstyles. While in Namibia, a visit to Sossusvlei is a must. From Sossusvlei you experience the Namib Desert (from where Namibia’s name is derived), considered to be the world’s oldest. In the desert’s “dune belt” the ever changing yellow, orange and red colours of the world’s highest sand dunes will surely impress.

malawi, the warm heart of africa Explore the highlights of Malawi, an unknown treasure in the heart of Africa. Visit the famous Mua Mission and Museum on the road to Cape Maclear, stay at Mumbo Island in the world famous tropical fish paradise of Lake Malawi, ascend to the top of the breathtaking Zomba Plateau before heading for Liwonde National Park. Continue on and end your tour with South Luangwa National Park in Zambia.

zambia, a pristine wilderness area One of the best experiences you will have in Zambia is when you fly to Mfuwe Airport, near to South Luangwa National Park. From here we drive you to one of our recommended camps. Here you spend time enjoying the wildlife of the Luangwa Valley, in open 4-wheel drive safari vehicles by day and at night, as well as on walking safaris. Each of the camps offer personal service and flexibility. Wildlife highlights in the Luangwa include big game such as Elephant, Lion, Buffalo and in particular, Leopard. In addition to South Luangwa National Park, Zambia (along with Zimbabwe) boasts the majestic Victoria Falls. Along with Iguassu Falls in Brazils and Niagara in North America, Vic Falls is not to be missed. Here the mightly Zambezi River falls about100 metres over the almost two km wide Victoria Falls rock face, before continuing on and flowing into Lake Kariba.

egypt & jordan, ancient civilisations massive monuments Visit the fabled land of Cleopatra and Tutankhamun, where you view the Sphinx with the Pyramids at its rear, before you undertake a leisurely luxury all suite cruise on the mighty Nile River itself. Egypt, land of the Pharaohs Egypt is home to some of the most recognisable landmarks in the world and for the entire duration of your time here, you are guided by one of our expert, English-speaking Egyptologist guides. They will take you to the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, Tutankhamun’s Gold, as well as accompany you on your Nile River Cruise. Egypt boasts many other lesser known treasures like the Monastery of St Catherine, some of the best scuba diving sites in the world near Sharm el-Sheikh and the fabulous temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel, undoubtedly the grandest temple in all of Egypt.

jordan & petra, land of the crusaders Jordan has a lot to offer from Roman Ruins to the ancient Nabatean Capital of Petra and the Dead Sea. Amman boasts its Crusader Castle located near Ajlun and Jerash, dating back 2,000 years and acknowledged as one of the largest and most well preserved sites of Roman architecture outside Italy. Travelling from Amman to the Dead Sea you visit Madaba (Saint George Church), with its well known mosaic of the Holy Land and Mt Nebo, believed to have been the burial site of Moses. A Dead Sea swim is not to be missed, as it is famous for its therapeutic waters. From the Dead Sea to Petra, you travel on the “King’s Way”, an ancient route which still has marks left by traders, armies and pilgrims who followed it centuries ago. This route takes you through Wadi Mujib, a deep valley boasting some of Jordan’s most breathtaking views. Petra dates back over 2,000 years. Proceed down a long narrow fissure between two overhanging cliffs over eighty metres high in parts, before arriving at the spectacular Red Rose City of Petra. Wadi Rum is a protected area with spectacular mountain desert scenery.

the middle east The Middle East is an area long visited by Westerners and never fails to amaze. Dubai has emerged from the rest of the Middle East as the latest “must visit” destination. From snow covered ski runs to desert dinners, opulent shopping centres and accommodation to suit, all making it a great stopover when visiting North and East Africa. The Arabian Fjords in Oman are easily visited from Dubai or even better still, combined with a visit to historical Muscat and a visit to the wadis in the desert.

the africa sensations tour the ultimate superior class tour to africa africa’s highlights in a shorter period The Inca Sensations Tour of Africa includes the highlights of Africa but over a shorter duration and at a more moderate level than the luxury Inca Gold Tour. This is our more modestly priced Superior-class tour to Africa, designed for the more budget conscious guest. It too visits most of Africa’s highlights and is escorted by an experienced tour leader with assistance for our expert English-speaking local guides. It stays at less extravagant hotels than the Gold Tour but the properties are very well located, of a very high standard and exhibit all the charm and character that is Africa.

guaranteed departures with 2 or more You have the confidence to book with Inca Tours knowing that the Sensations Tour is guaranteed to operate and won’t be cancelled due to low numbers at the last minute, as often happens with other tour operators. On all Sensations Tours, we guarantee that your tour will operate with only two or more.

ultimate small groups with a max of 18 In the same way that we guarantee our departures and tour leader, we also place a cap of only eighteen guests on each Sensations Tour. This way you receive personalised attention all the way. For financial reasons, most other tour companies do not do this and book as many people as they can on each tour.

stay in some of africa’s best locations Why go all that way only to stay near the places you want to see? We select hotels which retain the charm and character of Africa and are located at the places of interest. We avoid the international chains, preferring to experience the culture and lifestyle first hand in properties with local flavour and style. You have worked hard during your life, you deserve it!

Western Lowland Gorillas favour areas of marantaceae (flowering and starchy) vegetation which is their staple food source but at certain times throughout the year also seek out fruiting trees. Other primates such as Crowned and Moustached Monkeys are encountered in the forest, while Central Chimpanzees are often heard and occasionally seen. Sossusvlei & Namib Desert NAMIBIA

DAY 1

arrive windhoek / Sossusvlei On arrival in Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia, you are met and taken by road to Sossusvlei, situated within the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world. The Namib Desert is part of the Namib Naukluft National Park that stretches 400 km south of Walvis Bay and is sandwiched between the west coast and the escarpment that runs parallel for more than100 km inland. The desert’s huge red dunes and flat valley floors make up the archetypical view of the Namib that is world famous. (D)

DAY 2

Sossusvlei This morning you visit the world famous Sossusvlei. It is an enormous clay pan, flanked by the famous sand dunes that stand starkly against the blue sky and flush red in the early morning sun. These dunes have developed over millions of years, the wind continuously transforming the contours of this sea of red sand. The “vlei” itself only fills after rare, heavy rainfalls when, in a complete turn-around, it becomes a spectacular turquoise lake. (BLD)

DAY 3

Sossusvlei / Damaraland

Today you fly from Sossusvlei to Damaraland. On arrival you are met and taken to your camp for a two-night stay. (BLD)

DAY 4

Damaraland

Activities revolve around extensive game drives and exploratory hikes through this unparalleled landscape. A trip to the Twyfelfontein San art engravings is not to be missed. Namibia’s first World Heritage Site, Twyfelfontein has the largest collection of petroglyphs (prehistoric rock art) in Africa. Visit the Damara Living Museum and learn about the fascinating traditional culture of the Damara people. This combination of Africa past and present makes for a unique and unforgettable experience. Wildlife viewing here concentrates on the game found in the riverbed and along the valleys that fill with floodwaters during good rainy seasons.

This arid desert environment is home to desert-adapted elephant, gemsbok, springbok and variety of other species such as bat-eared fox. This includes the occasional glimpse of the endangered black rhino and cheetah. Birdlife is excellent with several Namibian endemics, such as Damara Hornbill, Carp’s Tit and Rupell’s Korhaan. (BLD)

DAY 5

DAY 6

Etosha national park Etosha National Park is Namibia’s premier wildlife destination. At almost the size of Switzerland it is one of Africa’s largest game parks. Large herds of plains game concentrate around the waterholes in the dry season, while the summer months’ sporadic rainfall produces a profusion of new life, including baby springbok and young wildebeest. (BLD)

DAY 7

Etosha np / Okonjima After breakfast you depart by car to Okonjima. Nestled among the Omboroko Mountains lies Okonjima—a Herero name meaning “Place of the Baboons”. During your stay here, you will observe AfriCat’s work and learn more about these amazing and beautiful animals. Namibia is home to the world’s largest wild cheetah population. The majority roam freely on Namibia’s 7,000 odd commercial farms. These large carnivores occasionally prey on the livestock that roam unprotected in the bush. As a result, cheetahs (and leopards) are often regarded as vermin by the farming community and are deliberately trapped or killed. AfriCat has taken on a large number of these unwanted cats. Among those being rescued, researched and rehabilitated by AfriCat are Cheetah, Leopard, Lion, Caracal, Wild Dog and Hyena. (BLD)

DAY 8

Okonjima Leopards are frequently seen here, so you may have the opportunity to observe these magnificent predators while game-viewing. The camp is located in the extreme north-west of Namibia on the Kunene River, the only permanent source of water in this region. The river creates a winding band of green surrounded by the lunar-like landscape of the spectacular Namib Desert. Serra Cafema is an intimate, peaceful camp with a unique mix of rustic and luxury elements nestled amongst the shady Albida trees on the banks of the Kunene. Rapids just below the camp provide a calming ambiance, with guests often lulled to sleep by the gurgling waters. Serra Cafema’s accommodation consists of only eight riverside Meru-style canvas and thatched villas on spacious, elevated decks blended smoothly into the surroundings. Each fully furnished tent has an ensuite bathroom, ceiling fan and mosquito nets. The public area comprises indoor and outdoor dining areas, sunken lounge, library and swimming pool, all sharing views of the Kunene River. (BLD)

DAY 6 & 7

Kunene Activities at Serra Cafema Camp revolve around the exploration of surrounding Namib Desert sands and the lush oases along the river. Informative nature drives and carefully guided quad bike excursions through the fragile dunes

allow guests to experience the true Namib in its unbridled glory. The utmost care is taken to tread lightly on the dunes and preserve the unique and delicate habitats of this landscape. Boating on the Kunene River provides the opportunity to venture through the lush riverside oases. Crocodiles and waterbirds seem out of place in this surreal landscape. Walking in the remote mountain and river valleys is also a highlight, as is a visit to a Himba village, one of Africa’s last true nomadic peoples. (BLD)
