Alderman resigns

Payne cites frustration, quits Bethel Springs Board By Christen Coulon

terest from the last month’s reports were a hit and run accident targeting the Bethel Springs police cruiser which caused minor damage, and in a separate incident the tires of the same car were slashed during last month’s meeting. The board then addressed some of the street department and maintenance work being conducted in the city to prepare for the winter months and discussed the addition of new signs to the city hall and ball park to replace the ones that had been removed and destroyed by vandals. Bethel also announced plans to spend monies from a FEMA grant on targeted road repairs throughout the city. At this point in the meeting, Payne asked Mayor Kay Cox for the floor to address the crowd. The Bethel Springs Board of Alderman held its monthly meeting, one week late due to a postponement, last Monday night. This month’s Bethel meeting took an unexpected turn as Alderman Sherri Payne presented her resignation to the board citing a feeling of “spinning my wheels and getting nowhere,” a lack of support from other members of the board and the mayor, and lack of accountability among her reasons for resigning. The meeting began with standing room only crowd as has been the case in past months. The board opened by approving the financial statement, water report and the police report. began reading her prepared statement it was immediately clear she intended to resign from the board. In an excerpt from Payne’s statement she said that, “I came into this position with a proactive attitude hoping to make a difference, not to be disrespected. It’s been almost a year and that has not happened. I offer my deepest apologies to the citizens of Bethel Springs. (Especially those who put enough faith in me to vote for me.) “I could just stop making an effort, come to the meetings once a month, draw a check (that might be enough to pay my water bill) and just sit back and take it easy. My conscience will not let me do that. For these reasons, I , Sherri Payne now resign

Flat tire? Blame the economy By Christen Coulon Editor

The shrinking value of the U.S. Dollar 2000-11 (When compared to the price of gold.)

Next time you are stuck on the highway with a flat tire, don’t blame your mechanic or even your low cost radials...blame the economy. No matter how you measure it, the American economy has went through the ringer in the last decade. Whether you call it a minor financial hiccup, or a full scale depression, looking back the effects are clearly visible. In the last 10 years, the dollar has lost nearly half its value when measured against many of the leading world currencies, and that is the good news. During this time, these currencies have also suffered through the same economic downturn as the dollar. A more accurate measure of the falling value of the dollar may be in its measure against commodity prices. Since January 2000, the price for an ounce of gold has risen nearly six-fold from $282 to $1,690. This means that 16.6 cents would buy as much gold in 2000 as a dollar would buy right now. (The U.S. government’s official inflation numbers show a somewhat different picture stating that 76 cents in 2000 is equivalent to value of our dollar now.) McNairy County is a long way from Wall Street. Because of this, the aftershocks of The Great Recession may be a little less noticeable here than in the topsy turvy financial markets. In fact, the na-

School board votes to survey another SES site By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

The McNairy County Board of Education approved surveying another possible site for the proposed new Selmer Elementary School. The site is the Jones property below East West Motor Freight on Highway 45. The survey will cost $4,250. The asking price for the 30-acre site is around $450,000. The decision was made based upon a poll of the members done by Director of Schools Charlie Miskelly at the request of school board chairman Frank Lacey. Four members of the board expressed a preference that the Jones property be surveyed. Two members did not want to do anything and one wanted to either survey either both the Jones and Teague properties, or only the Teague property. Board member Tony Chapman was critical of both the process and result. He said that the decision should be made at the meeting, unless there is an emergency. “The emergency for me is that we’ve been talking about building a school for three years and finding a location and we don’t have one yet,” Lacey said.

Chapman then made a presentation to the meeting about the Teague property. He argued that if you move the school away from the flood plain, you would also take it away from frontage on Highway 45. This property is on Jones Road or the old Highway 5. He said that the Teague property was relatively flat and has threefourths acres of road connecting to it. Chapman said that buses could come down Forest Hill Rd. There is enough pressure to support a sprinkler system and a substation located one-half mile down the road. He said that Selmer Mayor David Robinson told him there would be no problem expanding the city limits to encompass the entire site. “This is a better piece of property and that is what I am advocating,” Chapman said. Chapman said that this land is $200,000 cheaper than the Jones property and is not in a flood plain. “I don’t think we even need to be entertaining the idea of paying $15,000 (per acre) of the taxpayers money for land, when we can have it for less than half of that only three-quar-
