SCHOOL REFERENDUM SCRUTINIZED By Jeff Whitten
BATTLE OF DAVIS BRIDGE
Head News Writer
The school building program and the school referendum that would fund it faced scrutiny at a joint meeting of the McNairy County Commission Building and Education Committees last Monday. Some commissioners laid out what information they would need and what conditions

would be required in order to gain their support. “It’s time to set aside any issues we have,” said County Mayor Ronnie Brooks. Director of Schools Charlie Miskelly met with the committees and several members of the Board of Education were in the audience. “I’m here to listen. I’m here to understand,” Miskelly said. He said he would listen to the commit-
tees’ questions, go back to the school board meeting and they would come up with a consensus answer. Commissioner Stan Wheeler, who presided over the meeting as Building Committee Chairman, said that without a workable presentation, any vote on local option sales tax would fail.

A fire caused significant damage to a residence at 314 Westwood Circle on Sept. 25. Selmer firefighters responded to a call at the residence of Wilma Kinneburgh at 10:01 p.m. and were on scene four minutes later to find a fire in the carport of the structure with smoke also pouring out of
windows in the attic. Selmer Fire Chief Anthony Carr said that luckily, no one was injured in the fire, but the carport of the home was a total loss, and the rest of the house received smoke and water damage. The Selmer Fire Department received assistance on the scene from the Bethel Springs and Sulphur Springs volunteer fire departments. Carr said the fire, which began in the
carport of the home, took 45 minutes to bring under control. Following the fire, the Selmer Fire Department was assisted by Tennessee State Bomb and Arson with an investigation, but the cause of the fire was ruled to be undetermined. All of the responders at the scene did an excellent job, Carr said. “We appreciate the assistance from the other departments that backed us up in the mutual aid call.”
