Guys Creation Seventh Day Adventist Church Pastor Walter “Chick” McGill and Assistant Pastor Lucan Chartier came home for an international camp meeting after serving a jail sentence in San Bernadino, Calif. The Independent Appeal spoke to them about their experiences last Monday.
McGill served a 30-day sentence and Chartier a ten-day sentence for violating a court order requiring that they change the name of their church, which they have refused to do, saying it would violate their religious beliefs. The Independent Appeal is partnering with the City of Selmer, Selmer Parks & Recreation, Arts in McNairy, and the McNairy Regional Alliance to bring safe and family-friendly Halloween fun to the children of McNairy County this year. On Halloween night, all manner of ghosts, vampires, zombies and other ghoulish creatures will take over downtown Selmer beginning at 5 p.m for a massive, four-hour Halloween Street Party, Costume Contest, and Haunted House. The party will feature Halloween themed events and activities from each of our partner organizations as well as booths and games, candy for the kids, traditional decorations, Halloween movies, toys and prizes, a haunted house, and much much more. The Independent Appeal will host a costume contest with $350 in total prizes. Winners will be chosen in each of our seven categories: best baby, funniest, cutest, scariest, most creative, best pet, and best overall costumes. Each winner will receive $50, and winners will be announced at 8 p.m. The party will take place downtown in front of the Independent Appeal offices on 2nd Street between Court and Pharr Avenues, and on Warren Avenue between 3rd and Front streets. This year, Selmer Parks and Recreation will be holding their annual haunted house at 131 Warren Avenue. The haunted house will be open Oct. 27, 29 and 30 from 6-9 p.m., and due to its location at the very center of the
