INSIDE THIS WEEK
The Selmer City Park will be going to the dogs Saturday, but in a good way. The Dog Day in the Park, sponsored by 4 My Pets Grooming, includes contests, a raffle and a silent auction, music, horse back rides, cow wagon rides, mule wagon rides, kiddie train rides, lots of food and more. There are contests both for kids under 12 and for dogs and their owners. The best hand drawing of a pet by a youngster will win a prize. The contests for the dogs include a doggie costume contest, one for the best-dressed dog, best tricks, owner and dog look-alike, the cutest dog and the smallest dog. The doggie costume contest winner will be the poster dog for next year. There will also be a dog treat stacking contest. “Human contestants will have 30 seconds to see if they can create the tallest tower of dog biscuits,” Dawson explained. The entry fee is $6 per event or $15 per dog. “So bring your chairs and don’t forget your pooch and lets have some fun with our four-legged friends,” said Cheryl Dawson, owner of 4 My Pets Grooming, which is sponsoring the event. The day is not just for the pooches.

There are also contests for most humorous and best cat photo. The dog day starts at 11 a.m. and all proceeds go to help spay dogs and cats for low-income families. “There are so many animals being dumped in the community and dying of starvation. It’s really going to make a difference in some animals’ lives. This is something we really need to do in the county, so please lend a hand and help reduce the pet overpopulation,” Dawson said. The event needs volunteers. If you would like to volunteer or make a donation, call Linda Banks at (731) 439-0172. You can also send your donations to Bancorp South under Dog Days in the Park. The event also needs sponsors. Any sponsor that donates $100 will have a sign placed at the front of the stage. “We are hoping to spay as many dogs and cats in McNairy County that funds will allow. The program is being set up to help low-income families spay their pets. Applications will be taken the day of the event. Proof of last year’s income and filling out a low-cost spay form will be required. The cost of services is $20 per cat and $35 per dog. Eligibility requirements are an income of $14,000 and under for a single person, $16,000 and under for a family of two and $23,000 and under for a family of four. “Pet population statistics are simple. There are just too many pets and not enough homes...one litter can result in hundreds of thousands of unwanted pets,” Dawson said.

Gray named Citizen of the Year
By Christen Coulon Editor
Students in 16 Tennessee counties, including McNairy County, will benefit from more than $15 million in funding to support college access and success efforts thanks to a grant from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. The funding is part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs or GEAR UP grant program, which aims to provide information and services to students and families to increase enrollment and success in post-secondary education. The Tennessee Higher Education Commission announced the Collaboratives that will be a part of GEAR UP TN and participate in activities that cultivate a college-going culture in Tennessee. “The good news is that it will help us to target the 7th grade group and track them through the time they will graduate,” said Dr. Brian Jackson, assistant director of schools/supervisor of instruction. “It will help them to stay engaged so we can graduate a greater number of students. This grant will let them see some opportunities that they would normally not be presented with.”

Wi-Fi network to cover all of downtown Selmer? By Christen Coulon Editor
The City of Selmer is asking businesses to help expand the city’s growing Wi-Fi network. In an ambitious move that could make downtown Selmer one of the largest hotspots between here and Memphis, the city has come up with a plan that could cover the entire downtown area with free internet. “When the idea first actually came up, Steve Brown was helping us with our computers at that time, and he ran across this (repeater) and he just brought the idea to me and I said, ‘how can we do it,’” said Selmer Mayor David Robinson. The mayor said that when the program began, it focused on providing WiFi to the areas controlled by the city such as city hall, the parks and the community center. He said that the idea then evolved into a plan to include local business using their internet provider with the city’s repeaters. This would allow businesses to expand the city’s Wi-Fi network by sharing a small
amount of their bandwidth even if they have a different provider than the city. Robinson said that a number of local businesses (including the Independent Appeal) have expressed interest in partnering with the city on this project, and that private citizens are welcome to participate as well. “If we can get several...up and down here, then it would basically put that net over downtown Selmer,” Robinson said. “I just think it would be kind of cool. The ultimate goal would be to cover all of Mulberry Avenue and coming down Poplar Avenue. It’s going to be dependent on folks’ willingness to participate.” Each repeater has the ability to cover as much as a 400 foot radius around it, and each will cost less than $100. As someone travels away from one hotspot and the signal fades, it would automatically pick up another repeater without asking users to provide additional login information. As an added feature, each device would have a firewall built in that would allow access to the city’s network but would prevent any access to the net-
works of individual businesses. Robinson said that this would be a handy service for residents and visitors, and it would help to differentiate us from some of our sister cites in the region. “It helps us grow in the eyes of existing industry and gives us another arrow in the quiver for attracting new business,” Robinson said. Laurence Enticott, who is currently assisting the city with the technical side of the network’s installation, said that getting hooked up is very easy. “Once they attach the extra router, it becomes part of the mesh network that covers the town,” Enticott said. “As long as they have an existing router with an existing ethernet port, it would be completely separate from their own network, so there would be no chance of any security issues. “In theory, the way that the system works as a mesh, if you have contact with each other...we could cover the whole of the center of Selmer. The network could cover an area from the community center all the way down to the park and maybe a little bit further.”
