30 years of giving
INSIDE THIS WEEK
By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer
The McNairy County Children’s Shopping Spree celebrated its 30th year last Monday at Walmart in Selmer and provided a much needed joyous occasion in this season of giving. The shopping spree will brighten the Christmases for 271 children, from every school in the county, from kindergarten through the fourth grade, plus CDC classes in Selmer Elementary and Selmer Middle Schools, according to event coordinator Jack Cheshier. This is the 30th year for the event. There were around 70 to 75 sponsors who gave around $19,000 to make the shopping spree for the children possible, Cheshier said. “I’ve been very blessed this year. People have been very generous to me,” Cheshier said. About 40 National Honor Society volunteers from McNairy Central High School helped the children shop. “It’s as big a blessing today as it was 30 years ago. What tends to amaze me is the generosity we have in McNairy County. I’m just overwhelmed with how people trust me with their money to do what they know I’m going to do right. It gets overwhelming that I can raise that much money to spend on these deserving kids. I think part of that reason is that people can come and see what I do...It’s just overwhelming especially after what happened last week at school in Connecticut. It’s just a little bit more touching to know that it could have been our children...I’m just thankful that people continue to let me do this. I would have never thought that 30 years ago I would still be doing this—that I would still be financially able to do this. It’s never an I thing, it’s always a we thing and I just consider it a ministry to this county,” Cheshier said. “I love helping the kids and I know it puts a smile on their face and it puts a smile on mine as well,” said NHS volunteer Charity Surratt, a MCHS senior and second-time Shopping Spree volunteer.

Buck sounds off on need for school resource officers
Michie wreck injures one

Following last week’s tragic school shooting in Newtown, Conn., which claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults, McNairy County Sheriff Guy Buck came forward to share his feelings on security for our local schools. In a statement released on the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page, Buck discussed the need for school resource officers in local schools. “Just like everyone else I have spent the last few days trying to comprehend in the tragic events that happened in Newtown (Conn.)” Buck said. “It seems that everyone is interested in gun control or bringing God back into the schools, I'll leave those issues alone for now but there is an issue that has been very heavy on my heart. “In early 2011, I presented what I thought was a comprehensive and structured plan to put School Resource Officers in the Schools of McNairy

Trooper Kennie Lamberth of the Tennessee Highway Patrol investigates a one-car accident in Michie last Friday. The driver of a maroon Ford Aerostar van, Lindsey Nichole Spicer, was transported by air to THE MED for medical treatment. There were no passengers in the vehicle. The van was traveling southbound of Highway 22, ran off the road and hit a tree at Stutts Road. Lamberth said he had not yet drawn any conclusions about the causes of the accident since he was unable to talk to Spicer due to her condition. He did say that there was no indication of alcohol or drugs. A spokesperson for THE MED told the Independent Appeal last Monday that she was in fair condition.
