Victim of July assault dies Authorities await official cause of death before modifying alleged attacker’s charges By Christen Coulon Editor

A Selmer woman who was the victim of a violent assault on July 2, 2012, has died. Pamela Pitts, 52, who was allegedly assaulted by her nephew, Christopher R. Scott at 235 State St. in Selmer, died on Dec. 24, 2012. Scott, 33 of Milledgeville, is alleged to have assaulted both Pitts and his grandmother Earline Kirby in the attack. Following the assault, Scott reportedly stole his grandmother’s 2003 Chevy Impala and fled the area. Scott was next seen hours later at a hospital in Collierville, Tenn., where he was reported to have told hospital employees that he had killed his aunt SCOTT and grandmother. The Selmer Police Department issued a press release and bulletin to media outlets and law enforcement agencies following the incident, and Scott was captured hours later in Collierville, according to Lt. Tony Miller, investigator for the Selmer Police Department. Following his arrest, Scott was transported back to the county by Selmer authorities where he was charged

We’re gonna rebuild...bigger, better

Despite the devastating fire that leveled a large part of downtown Adamsville, city leaders and business owners pledged to rebuild the beautiful downtown to its former glory. The Saw Meal, which burned in the fire, has already opened its doors and its owners have plans to open a sports themed restaurant next door this year. The rest of downtown is already on the road to recovery, according to Adamsville Mayor David Leckner and City Administrator Steve Simon. “Each one of those spots...as far as rebuilding, that’s gonna be up to the landowner. What we’re hearing from them is they’re gonna rebuild and they’re gonna come back in those same spots,” Simon told the Independent Appeal Jan. 13, 2012.

5 dead, 3 injured, 2 missing No break in suspected Selmer dog poisonings By Christen Coulon Editor

A rash of suspected dog poisonings in the Country Club Lane area of North Selmer has pet owners worried and residents looking for a source of the outbreak. According to reports from local residents, five dogs have died, three more were injured and two remain missing. Antifreeze has been cited as a possible cause for the animal deaths. However, a spokesperson for a local veterinarian, with whom some of the victims took their dogs, said that they could not comment on any of their patients’ records but said, generally speaking, that their clinic has found no traces of poison in any animals they have seen recently. The spokesperson asked not to be named in this story. Calls placed to more than a dozen veterinary offices in a 50-mile radius of Selmer failed to yield a single confirmed case of poisoning. Jan Williams, the owner of a missing boxer said in an incident report filed by Selmer Officer Robert Heathcock, that her dog went missing on Dec. 18, 2012 and that several of her neighbors’ dogs have went missing or died following the disappearance of her animal. Williams claimed in the report that one of her neighbors received a threatening letter stating that if she did not get control of her dogs, they would be poisoned. Williams said that she believed the writer of the letter could be responsible for the spree of missing and dead dogs.

TWRA investigates cache of animal parts found in meth bust

While manufacturing meth is a serious charge, it has sadly become common place in McNairy County as it has nationwide. On Jan. 2, 2012, members of the McNairy County Drug Task Force arrested two individuals, Jason W. Brown and Pamela Denise Smith of Overshot Rd. in Adamsville on meth charges. However, during the search of their residence, DTF agents made a very unusual discovery...a large collection of illegal animal parts. After DTF agents Jamie Lowrance, David Johnson and James Frazier uncovered meth manufacturing items the investigators also began finding items such as raptor talons, hawk and owl talons, numerous protected turtles, hawk and owl feathers, a cottonmouth snake skin, wings and tails from hawks and owls, bags of protected bird feathers, various snake skins, an alligator head, numerous cottonmouth and copperhead snakes, an alligator tail, a bluejay, a pileated woodpecker, three snipes and a collection of frozen snake heads. In all, more than 120 animal parts were seized at this location.

BREAKING NEWS:

Bethel Springs...

We could fill an entire issue or two with a summary of last year’s coverage of the Bethel Springs Board of Aldermen meetings. This year, the dramatic back and forth discussions surrounding the police department replaced the discussion of the city’s runaway sewer bills on the board’s front burner. The department which began with two officers, survived multiple officer suspensions, a transfer, and a lame-duck abolition then immediate reinstatement of the department itself. As the year drew to a close, the department and its lone remaining officer looked to have survived. With a change in Bethel’s political landscape following last year’s election, long-time Chief T.E. “Pee-Wee” Sowell seems to have regained firm control of the department. We have included a list of the various headlines that have accompanied the coverage of the city’s police struggle in 2012.

Shiloh 150 years later

Visitors from around the world took to the fields of McNairy county to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the battle of Shiloh. The dueling four-day reenactments held in eastern McNairy County began with soggy weather, but cleared up and the early April sun scorched the participants for the remainder of the weekend. Following the event, there was a dedication of a new Shiloh movie which included many local actors and announcement

In breaking news, two suspects were captured and Sheriff’s deputies are on the lookout for two others following a manhunt of burglary suspects accused of breaking into the home of Ryan Sisk in the Leapwood area last Friday. Sheriff Guy Buck said Steven Hicks and his wife Sharon have been arrested and that Joe Little and Jonathan Beckham are still wanted in connection with the aggravated burglary, however Buck said there is no reason to believe the suspects are still in the Leapwood area. The manhunt began following a 911 call from Sisk who
