Independent Appeal Staff Check your pockets...you may find $1 million. An unknown McNairy Countian has hit the Mega Millions lottery for $1 million, but as of yet, no one has come forward to claim the prize. A player who purchased a Mega Millions ticket in Guys started the New Year with a $1 million win. The ticket, which is the 102nd worth $1 million or more since the Lottery began, matched five numbers drawn in last Friday night’s Mega Millions game. The prize was increased from $250,000 to $1 million because the player added the Megaplier option. Tennessee Lottery officials said that no additional information about the winner will be available until the prize is claimed.
Adamsville loses two heroes in two days

In a tragic week for the citizens of Adamsville, the town lost two legendary public servants last week. Heroes Bill McCall, the town’s long-time police chief who retired earlier this year, and Barry Hodge, the town’s assistant fire chief, both died last week. McCall died Jan. 3, and was a veteran of the National Guard. He retired after 30 years from the Adamsville Police Department where he served as Adamsville’s Police Chief. McCall was also well-known as a Pastor of New Hope Fellowship Church in Adamsville. Hodge died Jan. 4, and worked for Adamsville Fire Department for more than 35 years where he was the Assistant Fire Chief. He was also a self employed plumber and worked for the Adamsville Rescue Squad from 1979 to present. Read next week’s Independent Appeal for complete tributes to these fallen heroes.

Jesus Cares: By The Numbers

It began with an idea... While every church strives to provide help to those less fortunate, no single church in the area had the resources to care for and provide a leg up for every individual in need in McNairy County. “Several years ago at a ministerial meeting, several area ministers decided, ‘hey, we have got a problem,’” said Jim Gray, president of Jesus Cares Ministries. “That problem had to do with people banging on their door. There was someone out there all of the time, needing a place to stay, clothes, money, gas or something. ‘What are we going to do?” Several of the larger churches in the area banded together to form the Transient Ministries, Gray said. Initially, the ministry had an annual budget of about $2,500. When a person in need came to the attention of the ministry they would write a check and do what they could. “But after a while they decided they needed something better than what they had,” Gray said. Gray credited Jimmy Whittington with stepping in and reaching across the aisle to bring everyone together to form Jesus Cares. “He can reach across the line and get you
