A fierce winter storm lashed McNairy County late last week. The storm began as a balmy rain storm with temperatures hovering near the 70 degree mark on Saturday. It then brought near freezing temps and flooding on Sunday, and a persistent wintery mix to the area on Monday and Tuesday. The combo of floods and ice also kept area students home Monday and Tuesday. No significant damage from the storm had been reported as of press time Tuesday.

McNairy County Board of Education voted at its meeting last Thursday to support the suggestion of McNairy County Sheriff Guy Buck to put School Resource Officers in the schools. This vote came after Buck addressed the board on the topic. “Everybody is aware of the events that happened in Newtown, Conn., right before our Christmas break...It struck me very near and dear to my heart because I’ve got a first-grader and my wife has worked in the school system for a long time,” Buck said. Buck explained that he came before McNairy County Commission in 2010 to move forward with the School Resource Officer program. He said the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School had revitalized his commit-

McNairy County Sheriff Buck addressed County Commission on the topic of a School Resource Officer at its meeting last Monday. “If we want to make this happen, we’ve got to start today,” Buck said. He noted that in six months the county would approve its new budget. He said there would have to be a letter of agreement with the school board, which voted a resolution supporting the idea at its meeting last Thursday. Buck then discussed funding options. “There is a price tag to anything we do,” Buck said. Buck said that SROs could be placed in all schools for $330,000, but that was an ultimate goal that he would like to accomplish as soon as possible. Buck

Walmart has been hit by thieves for the third time in as many months. Brandon Forbes, of Jackson, Tenn., was apprehended by the Selmer police Jan. 9 and charged with one count of felony theft and one count of misdemeanor theft. No bond had been set in the case as of last Thursday, according to a spokesman at the McNairy County Jail. Forbes is scheduled to appear in General Sessions Court to face the charges on Feb. 21. Lt. Roger Rickman and Ptl. Tommy Howell were dispatched on Jan. 6 to Walmart in respect to a theft, according to a report provided by the Selmer Police Dept. Rickman spoke to loss prevention associate Steven Abt and reviewed video. Around 5:30 p.m., a black male and a FORBES black female entered Walmart, went to the electronics department and loaded a Hisense LED television valued at $548 on each shopping cart. The suspects then left in a black 4-door sedan, possibly a Nissan Maxima. The male was wearing a black jacket, white shirt, blue jeans and black tennis shoes. The black female was wearing a brown jacket, a pink and white striped shirt and blue jeans. The following day, Ptl. Allen Sides was dispatched to Walmart about another TV theft. The male subject took a 42 inch Hisense LED flat screen TV and left in a white Grand Am. The female that was with him pushed a buggy full of unknown goods out of the store. One of the three televisions have been recovered, and the two females are still being sought, Rickman told the Independent Appeal last Thursday. Two men suspected of a string of Walmart burglaries in the Mid-South are charged with stealing five iPads from the Selmer store last November. Tyrone Bernard and Daniel Robinson, both of Memphis, turned themselves in to the Osceola, Ark., police Dec. 3 and confessed to some of the other burglaries, according to press reports. They will eventually be brought back to McNairy County to face the charges here, according to Rickman.
