Selmer firefighter Chris Hansen told the Independent Appeal last Monday that there was an extensive amount of smoke, fire and water damage. The fire seemed to have started in the attic, and that was where there was the most fire damage.

Danny Churchwell and Bessie Jarrett will bring decades of musical experience to the stage Valentine’s evening at the “For the Love of Literacy” dessert tasting fundraiser at the Selmer Community Center.

The duo, which has played together since the early 1970s, will bring their mix of modern pop music, covering hits from genres such as country, rock, disco, Motown and gospel to the event.

The group began playing together shortly after the two finished high school.

Churchwell is a graduate of Michie High School, and Jarrett is a graduate of Ramer High School. Both musicians said that music runs in their families, and both said that they have played since they were children.

The two still remember their first show playing to the Bolivar Chamber of Commerce for their annual banquet nearly 40 years ago.

Churchwell said, for the literacy event, the band will play cover songs that most will

McNairy Regional Alliance Executive Director Ted Moore spoke to the McNairy County Commission, updating it on economic development, at its Jan. 17 meeting.

“I appreciate the opportunity to be here tonight. I thought I’d give you an updated report on what we do and how things are going,” Moore said.

Moore began by giving some background on MRA. Moore explained that the state requires that every county have a joint economic development commission.

“We have an economic development commission that satisfies that requirement,” Moore said.

The governing body over this commission is the McNairy Regional Alliance. This body has three employees: Moore, as well as Director of Chamber Programs Russell Ingle and Administrative Assistant Tracy Helmuth.

Moore said the alliance has several committees and works with 40 organizations in the county.

“We touch a lot of people in the county and a lot of programs. That is a positive thing for the county,” Moore said.

Moore then talked about industrial recruitment.

He explained that when MRA gets a project from the state or the Tennessee Valley Authority, it only gets a project name rather than the name of the company.

“When we get a project from the state or TVA, we have no idea who they are. That’s why they are assigned a project name because these large companies—they don’t want anybody to know that they are looking,” Moore told the commission.

In the first round, when MRA gets a request for a proposal, they get information on what type of building, land and other things the prospect is looking for.

“We respond to that and hope that we make the cut. About one of every 18, on average, that you respond to, you might get an opportunity to make a presentation,” Moore said.

Moore revealed that he was supposed to go to Atlanta to make a presentation to a German company, but that the buildings, including the Liberty building, which will be the new location for the McNairy County Farmers’ Co-op, are now off the market.

MRA’s holds Annual Banquet this Saturday

One of McNairy County’s premier events is coming home this Saturday. The McNairy Regional Alliance Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony has been held out of county the last few years. Scheduling conflicts and lack of size of local venues prompted MRA leadership to temporarily hold the event at the Pickwick Inn in Hardin County.

While the event has seen record attendance, an opportunity has presented itself that will enable the MRA to move its signature event back to McNairy County.

Thanks to a partnership with Sammy and Sherry Kiser, the MRA Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony will be hosted at the Crazy K Ranch in Michie Saturday night. “(The Kiser’s) had been asking us to come out for a while and take a look at their facilities there, and I had an opportunity to go out in October to see the new facility they are building there,” Ingle said. “It’s close enough in size that it merited us making the change.”

Ingle said that moving the banquet back to McNairy County was an important step.

“It was not only an opportunity to move the event itself back in the county but an opportunity to spend the money on it locally. The money spent on the banquet on catering and facilities will go back into the local economy,” Ingle said.

In addition to the great facilities that will be on display, the MRA Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony will feature a catered meal and entertainment by award winning comedian and ventriloquist Taylor Mason.

The MRA will be flying in Mason from Los Angles for this year’s event. Mason has played at Carnegie Hall in New York City and The Sydney Opera House in Australia. He’s also performed for companies such as McDonald’s, Walmart, Microsoft and Walt Disney.

Ingle said that he saw Mason the same time he saw Jeff Allen (the performer at last year’s event) and he felt that his blend of family friendly comedy would be ideal for the banquet.

“It is an opportunity to bring something to the community that we don’t normally get,” Ingle said. “We

kind of set a standard last year.”

Awards will be presented in the following categories: Industry of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Community Enhancement Award, Professional Achievement Award, Bill Rail Spirit of Excellence Award, “Maurice Hamm” Spirit of Service Award, and Adult and Youth Leadership Rising Star Award. Outgoing Chamber Board Members will also be honored.

The town of Guys held their monthly meeting last Monday night and the town’s attorney, Ryan Feeney, was on hand to swear in its two re-elected aldermen, Chris Howard and Wayne Henry and the town’s re-elected Mayor Keith Rineheart.

The board began the meeting by approving the minutes from the previous month and the current financial report.

Following the swearing in, Rineheart reminded the board members to turn in their ethics statements to the state. Rineheart also announced that Pickwick Electric had begun clean-up of roadside debris that had been the subject of discussion in the previous meeting and had offered the town an apology because of the situation.

Alderman Chris Howard mentioned to the board that he had been approached by an internet company interested in placing a large Wi-Fi tower atop the water tower that would bring high-speed internet to a larger area of Guys. The board said that any usage of the water tower would have to be approved by the Selmer Water Department and referred any questions about the placement to them.

In other news, the town announced that a sinkhole had developed on Stateline Rd. and had to be filled.

Adamsville discusses industrial proposal

The Adamsville City Commission approved an Industrial Development Board Proposal at its meeting last Monday. As reported earlier in the Independent Appeal, the state has initiated a new certification process for industrial sites. Though the Adamsville Industrial Park has been certified as deal ready, it will still have to go through this additional process to get favorable consideration from industrial prospects.

The new process will take around nine to 12 months and cost about $15,000, though the city could get a grant and also funding from the county.

The commission approved a policy on the sale of surplus and obsolete property. Mayor David Leckner, Vice-Mayor Frank Lacey, and Commissioners Mark Massey and Matt Wood voted aye.

Commissioner Tommy Morris, who had been critical of the policy, passed. Morris had criticized a provision prohibiting city employees to bid on surplus property. This provision was taken out of the policy, but it still prohibits City Commissioners and department heads from bidding.

Mark Godwin, of the Savannah, Tenn. accounting firm of Williams, Jerrolds and Godwin

discussed the results of the fiscal year 2012 audit.

“The city is in good financial condition,” he said.

The water fund had net revenues (a surplus) of $300,000, Godwin said.

Adamsville Elementary School Principal Danny Combs appeared before the board to suggest that Hughes Street be made one-way.

“If Hughes were one-way, it would be safer in the morning and more efficient in the evening,” Combs said.

Lacey, who is also school board chairman, said that the road is school, rather than city, property.

The consensus of the commission was that it would offer technical assistance in deciding whether or how to do it and would enforce it if it were done.

“You have the city’s blessing. If you need help, let us know,” Leckner said.

A budget calendar was presented to the commission. Under the timeline, the budget proposal would be submitted to the commission by May 15 and the commission would approve it on two readings by the end of the fiscal year on June 30.

The commission approved Leckner’s nominations of Lacey and Donna Dickey to serve on the Planning Commission.

Finger board expresses frustration over Roadscape grant

Finger Mayor Robert Heathcock and the Board of Aldermen opened their monthly meeting last Monday night with discussion of hope that a new band will increase attendance at the community dance.

“The band hired a fiddle player, and the door is back up to almost normal,” Heathcock said. “I think that in the next week or two, we are going to be smoking!”

“And Then There Were None”

Arts in McNairy Performing Arts will kick off the new year by presenting a dinner theater presentation of “And then There Were None” by Agatha Christie at the Latta Theater of the McNairy County Visitor’s and Cultural Center on Feb. 15. This audience will be able to purchase tickets for this dinner and performance by accessing the order form on the home page of AiM’s website, www.artsinmcnairy.com or pasting the online invitation address, tinyurl.com/aglrzup, into their web browser search bar.

Tickets for the dinner theater are $25 per person. AiM will sell tickets for the dinner theater until Feb. 10.

“Tickets for the regular seating performances of the play scheduled for Feb. 16 & 17 can be purchased on-line as well,” said AiM Managing Director, Paige Holmes. “Invitations for AiM members and e-newsletter subscribers to purchase tickets went out last Friday. Initial sales have gone well and we have had good response. We hope to be able to offer this service for every AiM performance in the future.”

Community involvement in getting the word out for the show has went well. “And Then There Were None” dinner theater tickets will also be sold at several McNairy County businesses such as Shackelford Funeral Home, Selmer Chiropractic and Ramer Station Restaurant. Ramer Station is catering the event serving beef and chicken, green beans, baked potatoes, rolls with tea and water. A dessert bar will be set up in the Latta gallery at intermission. Tickets will also be sold at the door for the Feb. 16, 7:30 p.m. show, and the Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. on Feb. 17.

“That grant is $13,000,” Heathcock explained. “I understood that we pay 20 percent, which is $2,000. We’re not putting $13,000 out there. That’s all we have.”

Jayne Brady added, “And then wait three or four years for the state to decide they’re going to reimburse us.”

Heathcock assured the board members that he is working to correct the issue and would call a special meeting before any concrete decisions were made concerning the city sign.

The board closed the meeting reminding its members that softball season and the annual barbecue were coming up soon.

“I will tell you what we do,” Churchwell said. “We do pop, country and rock, but we do it right down the middle. We don’t stray from the middle on anything.

Everything we do you are going to know.”

Churchwell handles all of the instrumental work for the band with Jarrett doing all of the vocals.

“What I play is the keyboard.

I have a very expensive keyboard, and when I play it you are going to think there is a 20-piece orchestra playing,” Churchwell said. “That is all I have done all of my life, and I can make it do what I want it to do.”

The group said that it draws on its musical roots for inspiration. Jarrett has a gospel background and has played in venues as far away as New York City. Prior to playing with Jarrett, Churchwell spent his teen years playing in Nashville gospel quartets. Jarrett said that she found herself in gospel music early on but said that she has always liked Motown.

“My favorite music is the Motown stuff,” Jarrett said. “But I can sing country or whatever we are playing for the show.”

Churchwell said that “At Last”

by Etta James and “Crazy” by Patsy Cline are two covers that crowds love to hear Jarrett perform.

Many will recognize the group as the house band that once played in their Main Street areas for customers on the weekends at Henco.

Recently, the group has stayed busy playing venues in the Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama tri-state area. The group said they were excited to play at a local venue for a hometown crowd, because there are so few opportunities to do so.

This year’s “For the Love of Literacy” dessert tasting fundraiser will take place at the Selmer Community Center from 5-8 p.m. on Feb. 14. Tickets for the event are $5 and will be sold at the door.

“We didn’t have a building to go to Atlanta to present tomorrow. Hopefully, we will be able to use one of those buildings going forward when we get some guidelines on whether they want to lease it and how they want to lease it,” Moore told the meeting.

Moore said companies ask for a lot of information.

Companies from Germany are the most active, Moore said. However, they ask for the county or industrial board to forego the first two years rent or that the rent is no more than the interest on the loan that the industrial board or county has to incur in order to buy the building. They want a third-party guarantee on buying or leasing their equipment so that the parent company won’t have to do it.

This is an illegal practice, Moore said.

There is a way around this problem involving a guarantee from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Rural Development.

They also want to forego property taxes for 15 to 20 years, Moore said. They don’t want to have to pay any fees to the city or county.

All of the prospects have been referred by the German chamber of commerce office either in Houston or Atlanta and seek similar deals, including cash grants for moving expenses.

“When you are talking about a cash grant, you are talking about $250,000 and up,” Moore said.

The state had agreed to provide the grant for the company Moore was to have met with.

Moore said he hoped to be able to use state funding on the next German project.

Demographics are important in recruiting industries, Moore said.

“That’s why West Tennessee has been so slow, I think, in getting a lot of these companies. A lot of these companies are going to the larger cities because of the workforce (and) because of transportation,” Moore said.

Moore noted that only 54 percent of the population of West Tennessee has a high school diploma or a General Education Degree.

“That’s not going to work in today’s workforce requirements, where people are asked to run computers and robotics and things like that. So West Tennessee, as a region, has got a lot of work to do, and we have formed a ninecounty partnership,” Moore said.

The county was certified by the Tennessee Economic and Community Development Department’s ThreeStar program for each of the 31 years it has been in existence, Moore noted.

McNairy County was the only one in the state to do that.

The requirements for the ThreeStar program are changing, Moore said. The Economic Development Commission and the Chamber of Commerce used to be able to fill all the Three Star requirements on its own, but this is no longer true.

The five ThreeStar categories are jobs and economic development, fiscal strength and efficient government, public safety, education and workforce development, and health and welfare.

“They want us to decrease the crime rate,” Moore said.

In education, third through eighth-grade students are required to score proficient or advanced in mathematics.

“Right now it is49.7 percent. They want that increased,” Moore said.

There is a $15,000 reimbursable grant for any program that would raise this percentage, Moore said. The money would have to be spent first and would then be reimbursed.

The ECD wants a reduction in Body Mass Index scores in the county’s eight-graders as a part of the ThreeStar requirements, Moore said.

MRA is only responsible for one of the five categories: jobs and economic development.

In addition to ThreeStar requirements, the state must certify industrial sites, Moore said.

Both the Adamsville and Selmer industrial parks were certified as deal-ready by the West Tennessee Industrial Association and TVA. “Now, the state says, ‘We want our own certification.’ We don’t have to get them certified, but if they get a project through the state and they’ve got sites that are state-certified, they’re going to send them there first. No, we don’t have to do it, but we may not get looked at, either,” Moore said.

The cost for state certification can run anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000, Moore said.

This involves core-borings, environmental surveys and other things. Moore said a meeting is planned to see what can be done to get the Adamsville Industrial Park state certified.

Engineers have said that it will cost $40,000 an acre to get the remaining unused 83 acres in the Selmer Industrial Park level, Moore said.

“What’s left is on a really hilly area and there would have to be a lot of fill, a lot of drainage systems put in,” Moore said.

This estimate comes from TLM engineers and architects and Forkham Lanham of Dyersburg, Tenn.

It cost $750,000 to level the ground on which the Midwest Woodworking sits, Moore said.

“That dirt is expensive, isn’t it? We’ve got to find some more land,” Moore said.

Moore said it would be nice to find it next to the railroad, but it is on a flood plain.

The questionnaires companies send are going to start asking about sustainability, which includes such things as recycling and building green buildings, Moore said.

“It may have some responsibilities in there that we may have to come to the county (and) may be asked to do some funding,” Moore said.

Moore said with the new recycling building we are going to be in pretty good shape.

There will be a manufacturing day on Feb. 7. Representatives from industries will be making presentations to educators on what kind of employees and skills they are looking for, Moore said. Then there will be a tour of some of the plants.

“We do have a small company that we are making headway with in one of the buildings in Adamsville,” Moore said.

The MRA was working on three expansions. One, Spectrum, is more or less complete, Moore said.

Of all the new jobs created in Tennessee, 80 percent come from expansion of existing industry, Moore observed.

Moore said that the MRA does a lot of retail recruiting.

“We’ve got the ability to know what the people of McNairy County are buying outside the county. We know dollar amounts, type of retail, so you’re not shooting in the dark. You know what needs you need to fill to try to keep folks in the county and keep them shopping.

We also have by retailer what they are looking for, what the population they are looking for, what the traffic count needs to be ,” Moore said.

The highest traffic count, a little over 19,000 cars a day, is in front of Walmart, Moore said.

“I wish we could have had the property just as you get to Walmart on the right, but that’s privately owned and we’d like to lease it, but banks will not loan money anymore to build buildings on leased property,” Moore said.

Stores will usually want to locate between Walmart and downtown Selmer, because locating on the other side of town reduces sales by about 20 percent.

County Mayor Ronnie Brooks said the megasite in Haywood County and the Toyota plant in Mississippi will help attract industry to the area.

“We’re on the forefront. We’re really working hard to get everything in place that we need to have so we can move forward,” Brooks said.

“We provide a vital service to the undereducated adults in the community,” Pearson said. “All of the jobs today require skills of today and not of yesterday. If our adults are not educated, we cannot attract new jobs to McNairy County.”

Pearson said that the 31.5 percent rate of adults in our county without a high school diploma is unacceptable and that we must work as a community to bring that number down.

Open letter to president Obama Dear Mr. President Obama, It is obvious that all of you in Washington don’t have a clue about what you are doing. It is a fact that for every cause there is an effect. You people keep trying to change the effect or result without ever considering the cause.

Quote from Albert Einstein, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results.”

I think the real problem started in the 1920s, but the most obvious causes started in the 1960s. The order of these things may not be in exact order, but they did happen. One of the first things to start the descent of our nation, was when Supreme Court Justices decided they knew more than our forefathers who wrote our Constitution.

If they had looked back, they would have seen that these men spent many hours in prayer and Bible study even in the actual working sessions. It is quite clear that God, the Bible and Christian ethics are what guided these men.

Then, our Supreme Court Justices take five words out of a two or three page document and say, “This is what they meant.” When I vote, I don’t believe everything you say, but look at what you truly believe by what you have done and are doing. I don’t believe these judges considered everything Thomas Jefferson had done or said.

About the same time, it appears that these judges started being influenced by psychiatry and politics. Psychiatrists say, “Don’t discipline your children, because you teach them violence.” Up until then, the only violence you saw in schools was shooting paper wads and spit balls and maybe a fist fight during recess, with the two usually going back to class arm in arm, and they had no homosexual tendencies whatsoever.

Prayer was removed from the schools, and reading the Bible was banned (that was the textbook used in schools for years).The Ten Commandments was removed from school, yet they are all through the Capitol. You can no longer teach a kid not to kill, steal, lie and cheat and other morals. You will be teaching them religion, yet you can teach them how to be gay (or queer, whichever you believe) and that is normal. Also you will allow Muslims certain of their religious rights, but you are trying your best to remove any and everything concerning the one true God. You people make laws to govern the people, but you are not the only one. The one who created this universe makes them as well, whether you believe them or not, and they are all enforced, not like the current regime that just enforces the ones they want to. One of these laws is, “Don’t be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a man sows he will also reap.”

I think it was in the 1970s our Supreme Court Justices said for the convenience of all the women that make an “oops” you can go to a quack and have it removed and both houses, Republican and Democrat, said “Good idea. We will pay for it.” And now ObamaCare (or doesn’t care) says businesses should pay for this too, even if they have moral objections to it, except Muslims, you don’t have to. Since this time, over 40 years ago, more than 55 million babies have been murdered without the least bit of remorse from Washington.

Another of God’s laws is, “They sow the wind and reap the whirlwind.” Are you reaping what you have sown? I think so, and your gun control is not going to stop it. Until you change the causes, the effects are going to get worse and worse. The whirlwind is going to grow into a hurricane.

By the way, these dead babies would be paying into all of your taxes now.

Help! My cat is plotting to kill me

Am I paranoid to believe my cat is plotting to kill me?

I believe this is so because he gazes through the window until I creep onto the ice cold porch to feed him. Smokey is a bit of a barn cat, a rebel without a cause, prowling through the night, wooing the ladies, and ultimately dragging home with a mangled ear and a ferocious appetite. Clearly, I need to haul him in for a consult at my local vet.

A few weeks ago, the flu invited itself into our home, and the boys and I were completely down. I was so sick, feeding the cat slipped my mind. As we lay on the couch, I spotted him through the window. He had maimed a squirrel, and spotting his bowl, jumped onto the table. With the fresh kill in mouth, he placed it neatly into his feed bowl. If he could have raised his middle claw, he would have.

Unfortunately, making coffee is even a tedious task, because he hears me stirring around and immediately pounces on the window. Dousing him with water is useless, he cusses and then comes back for more. His gaze is penetrating, almost daring me to forget his meal. It is a sad day when a person has to tippy toe around the kitchen to avoid the family cat.

My husband says DO NOT feed him when he jumps on the window screen, but I do it anyway. Smokey has trained me. I am like Pavlov’s dog, except there is no bell being rung, it is a lone cat peering into my soul, with his steely gray eyes. I feed him because I fear him, and fear he can smell.

Smokey is our resident renegade, the feline version of Eminem. We love him, but his aggression must be snipped, he needs to be taken down a few notches. Hopefully, after a much needed vet visit, he will see the error of his ways, see the light, stop roaming, and most importantly, stop bullying the lady with the cat food.

Who Will Be the Next Habitat Family?

McNairy’s Habitat for Humanity is ready to find out who our next homeowners will be. Our fifth house is nearing completion in Adamsville. This is the time when we need to get busy finding out which family will get the next house after this one. When we know the requirements of the sixth family- how many bedrooms, etc- we can select a floor plan for the sixth house and begin the building process.

Habitat homeowners pay back the cost of building the house, but no interest is charged and no profit is added.

It’s called the Economics of Jesus. Because no interest or

profit is added to the loan, usually payments are lower than what the family was paying for rent.

The new family must be living in McNairy County and planning to live here in the future. There must be a need because the family currently has substandard or overcrowded living conditions. There must be an income of at least $1,000 to $1,500 per month, depending on the family size so the family will be able to pay back the cost. Families are required to attend classes in budgeting, home ownership, and home maintenance. Also, families contribute some of their own time and talents to the construction work.

Habitat’s goal is to provide a hand up, not a hand out so that God’s people can have a basic, decent home where they will live and raise their children. We invite people of all backgrounds, races and religions to partner with us to provide homes for families in need.

Shirley Ruth Whitaker Price Funeral services were held for Shirley Ruth Whitaker Price of Michie, Tenn. on Monday, January 21, 2013, 11 a.m., at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Selmer with Bro. Malcom George officiating. Interment will be in the Michie Cemetery. Visitation was on Sunday from 5:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home in Selmer.

Mrs. Price was born April 15, 1930, the daughter of the late George Eldridge and Georgie Evelyn Jones Whitaker. She departed this life on Thursday, January 17, 2013 in Jackson, Tenn. at the age of 82 years, 9 months, 2 days.

She was united in marriage to Harris Gene (Tootsie) Price on July 13, 1951 in Corinth, MS. She was a member of Michie First Baptist Church and was a supervisor at United Pioneer in Corinth for more than 25 years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Mrs. Price loved all her family very much and was a wonderful cook. She was happiest when everyone was together enjoying one of her delicious home cooked meals, especially at Christmas.

Some of Mrs. Price’s grandchildren’s favorite times were spent at her house. She would take them to get groceries and movies. They made countless memories every Friday night. She enjoyed taking trips with her whole family to Florida and the Great Smokey Mountains and traveling out west.

Mrs. Price is survived by her husband Tootsie Price of Michie; her son, Ronnie Price and wife Kay of Michie; her daughter, Debbie Flatt and husband Ed of Selmer; her son, Roger Price and wife Connie of Corinth; seven grandchildren, Valerie Price Hickman and husband Jimmy of Selmer, Carole Price Kennedy and husband Chris of Bethel Springs, TN, John Price of Selmer, Trey Moore and wife Molly of Stantonville, Tenn., Beth Moore Fowler and husband Matt of Selmer; Brandon Harvell and wife Nancy of Corinth, Michael Harvell and wife Nikki of Corinth; fourteen great grandchildren, Allie Claire (Dumplin) and Jasper (Pee-Wee) Hickman, Walker and Henry Kennedy, Jack and Spencer Moore, Lillybeth, Luke and Levi Fowler, Nathan and Natalie Harvell, and Cole, Ryder, and Edie Harvell.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Price was preceded in death by two brothers, E. C. Whitaker, and Ray Whitaker.

Clarence James (Jim) Henry Clarence James (Jim) Henry departed this life on January 18, 2013 in Bethel Springs, Tennessee at the age of 72 years, 8 months, 28 days. He was born April 21, 1940, the son of the late Arnold and Rosie lee Patterson Henry.

Mr. Henry owned and operated a sawmill prior to opening a grocery store in Bethel Springs. He was a Butcher, a former Bethel Springs Alderman, and was a McNairy County Constable during the term of Sheriff Buford Pusser.

He was baptized at his home by Bro. Paul Henley of Safe Harbor Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Angela Hostetler of Bethel Springs, Tenn.; a son, Joe Allen Henry of Whiteville, Tenn.; two sisters, Iva Marie Rudd of Bethel Springs, Tenn., Catherine Warren of Bethel Springs, Tenn.; a brother, Hershell Henry of Bethel Springs, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Michole Torres, Rosanna Henry, Laurena Henry, Coleen Henry, Jeremy Hostetler, James Hostetler; six great grandchildren; his ex-wife, Dorothy Henry of Henderson, Tenn.; a longtime companion, Amy Hathcock of Memphis. A host of extended family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Henry was preceded in death by a daughter, Rose Marie Henry; a son, John Michael Henry; a sister, Maggie Newton; two brothersin-law, James Warren, Elbert Newton.

Services were held on January 22, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer, Tennessee, with Roger Hubanks officiating. Burial followed in the Liberty Cemetery at Bethel Springs, Tennessee.

Jean Wardlow Jean Wardlow was born August 25, 1926 in McNairy County, Tenn., the daughter of the late James Bluford and Emma Ferrell Boatman.

She was united in marriage to Carl L. Wardlow on December 23, 1945. Mr. Wardlow preceded her in death on May 14, 2005.

Mrs. Wardlow was a homemaker. She was a member of the Pocahontas Church of Christ in Pocahontas, Tennessee. She enjoyed cooking for her family, collecting antiques, needlework, painting, and tending her flower gardens.

Mrs. Wardlow departed this life on January 15, 2013 in Corinth, Mississippi at the age of 86 years, 4 months, 21 days. She is survived by two sons, Johnny Carl Wardlow and wife Sherilyn of Pocahontas, Tenn., Carlos Wardlow and wife Rita of Pocahontas, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Richard Wardlow and wife Shelia of Pocahontas, Tenn., Carley Wardlow of Pocahontas, Tenn.; host of extended family and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Wardlow was preceded in death by a brother, Vester Boatman.

Services were held on January 19, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer, Tennessee, with Jeremy Weekley officiating. Burial followed in the Bethel Cemetery at Pocahontas, Tennessee.

Ruth Harris Williams departed this life on January 18, 2013 in Selmer, Tenn. at the age of 97 years, 9 months, and 5 days. She was born on April 13, 1915 to Harrison McKenley Eliff and Myrtle Jane Davis Eliff. She was united in marriage to Walter W. Harris in 1938. Mr. Harris preceded her in death in April of 1976.

Mrs. Williams was a seamstress having worked for Salant and Salant Garment Company.

She did alterations for many businesses sewing for both the public and her family.

Her pride and joy was being “Grandma” at Savannah Head Start, which she truly loved.

During her lifetime she lived in the Old Union and Rocky Knob communities and at Oakhaven Village in Adamsville.

Mrs. Williams was a member of Hardin Graveyard Solitude Free Will Baptist Church. She also attended Old Union Church and Rocky Knob Church.

She loved bluegrass music, quilting with friends, gardening, and sharing her home grown vegetables with others. Our loving mother had to quit school when she was in the eighth grade to help take care of her brothers and sisters. She self taught herself to read and loved taking care of others having cared for her mother, brother, and mother-in-law when her dad passed away. In 1967 her husband Walter became a paraplegic for nine years. She never complained but lovingly took care of him and her five children. Her hobbies were her flowers, animals, feeding the birds, traveling, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by four children, Janice Crans of Adamsville, Loretta Plunk of Finger, Larry Harris of Cape Canaveral, FL, and Gerry Harris of Adamsville.

A daughter, Frances Fields, preceded her in death on October 26, 2011. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Tina Whitson, Gina Bates, Kim Morgan, Rick Plunk, Marty Plunk, Chris Harris, Reggie Harris, Tonya Garrison, Brooks Harris, Tracy Broocks, and John Robert Fields; 21 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Elbert Eliff, Jessie (Shorty) Eliff, Willie Erie Robertson, Leonard Eliff, Mildred Eliff, Myrtle Lee Eliff, Lurie Inether Eliff, Susie Ineze Eliff, Geraldine Eliff, Entford Eliff, and Johnnie McKinley Eliff Funeral services were held on January 21, 2013 at 3 p.m.at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Adamsville in Adamsville, Tennessee, with Bro. Jimmy Cates officiating. Burial followed in the Old Union Cemetery at Morris Chapel, Tennessee. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Joanie Gail Moore Maples was born July 9, 1982 in Indianola, MS, the daughter of Terry Moore and the late Wilma Jean Purvis Moore.

Joanie was a loving and caring person. She loved to make people laugh.

Joanie departed this life on January 9, 2013 in Selmer, Tennessee at the age of 30 years, 6 months.

She is survived by a son, Nicholas James Maples of Adamsville, Tenn.; father, Terry Moore of West, MS; two sisters, Jamie Nicole Webb and husband Moe of Blackrock, AR, Taylor Presley of Savannah, TN; nephew, Moses Webb of Blackrock, AR; host of extended family and friends.

Services were held on January 20, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Adamsville in Adamsville, Tennessee, with Robert Howse officiating. Burial followed in the Mars Hill Cemetery at Adamsville, Tennessee.

John William Taylor John William Taylor, 81, of Adamsville, Tennessee died Wednesday, January 16, 2013. He was born on October 15, 1931 in Brownsville, Tennessee, the son of the late Lucille Morris Taylor and Samuel Hervey Taylor.

Mr. Taylor graduated from Adamsville High School in 1949.

He was drafted and served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean Conflict where he was part of the 1st Cavalry Division, 8th Cavalry Regiment in Hokkaido, Japan. Upon discharge, he attended the University of Tennessee at Martin and Knoxville where he received a degree in Civil Engineering in 1958. He worked at the Tennessee Highway Department, M.W. Kellogg Co. during the construction of the Tennessee River Pulp and Paper Co. at Counce, TN, and in 1963 began working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the Memphis District where he worked until his retirement as Chief of River Operations in 1989. He was a longtime member of the Longstreet United Methodist Church in Memphis, Tenn.

He is survived by his wife, Jamie Aycock Taylor, whom he married in 1963; his two sons, John Keith Taylor of Chattanooga and William Todd Taylor (Rachele) of Corinth, MS; three grandchildren, Samuel Taylor, Julia Taylor and Olivia Taylor, and one step-grandson, Ashton Lance.

Mr. Taylor was preceded by his brother, Samuel Morris Taylor.

Services were held on January 18, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer, Tennessee with Dr. John Jones officiating. Burial followed in the Pine Hill Memorial Garden at Adamsville, Tennessee.

Memorials may be made to Longstreet United Methodist Church in Memphis Tenn.

Effie Earline Foster Effie Earline Foster, 83, of Michie,Tenn., died on January 14, 2013, at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Michie, Tenn., and retired from the ITT Phone Company of Corinth, MS after many years of service. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ernest P. Foster; a cherished son, Bobby Foster, who resided in Michie, Tenn.; and her beloved parents, Marlin and Myrtle W. Baker, who also resided in Michie, Tenn. She leaves to honor her memory a daughter, Janice Gray, (Freddie) of Michie, Tenn. ; three brothers, David Baker of Michie, Tenn.; Joe Baker of Thompson, GA; and George Paul Baker of Jacksonville, FL; five sisters, Virgie Harrell of Michie, Tenn., Fran Nelms of Naples, FL; Jane Austin of Savannah, Tenn.; Cholie Rose of Gallatin, Tenn.; and Ann Johnson of Iuka, MS; four grandchildren, Shawn Gray, Jeff Foster, Janie Foster and Tammy Fowler; and six great-grandchildren, Annabelle Gray, Griffin Gray, Lauren Foster, Emily Foster, Shelby Fowler, and Tyler Fowler. The family received friends on Thursday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 at the Church of God of Prophecy in Michie, Tenn. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 18, 2013 and were conducted at the church. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Mrs. Foster’s services have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery of Memphis, Tenn.

Bess Ida West Bess Ida West departed this life on January 16, 2013 in Selmer, Tennessee at the age of 87 years, 2 months, 18 days. She was born October 29, 1925 in McNairy County, Tenn., the daughter of the late Wesley and Ida Cofer Lowrance. She was the widow of James Melton West who preceded her in death on July 8, 1998.

Mrs. West was a member of the Selmer Sanctified Church of Christ where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was retired from Brown Shoe Company in Selmer with 35 years of service.

She is survived by a daughter, Beverly Smith and husband James of Selmer, Tenn.; two sons, Dennis (Dink) West and wife, Phyllis and Houston West and wife, Pam, both of Selmer; a stepdaughter, Janie Stephens and husband, Bob, of St. Louis, MO; 13 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. She is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. West was preceded in death by a son, J. W. West; a sister, Ruby McMahan; a brother, Hugh Lowrance.

Services were held on January 20, 2013 at 3 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer, Tennessee, with Darryle Vaught officiating. Burial followed in the McCalips Chapel Cemetery at Selmer, Tennessee.

Gloria L. Smith Morgan Gloria L. Smith Morgan, 71, of Corinth, MS departed this life on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013 at her home in Corinth, MS. She was born June 3, 1941 to the late Casper Smith and Nora Golightly Smith.

Ms. Morgan was a factory worker, retired from GE in Selmer, Tenn. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of Michie First Baptist Church.

She leaves three sisters: Mary Frances Simmerman of Brownsville, Tenn., Elizabeth Burns (James) of Selmer, Tenn., and Martha Leatherwood (Marcus) of Corinth, MS.; a brother-in-law, Bill Morgan (Joyce) of Booneville, MS; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, Gordon Morgan, she is preceded in death by two brothers, Perry Smith and Charles Smith and a sister, Carolyn Cooper.

Services were held on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at Magnolia Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with Rev. Jessie Hisaw officiating. Visitation was Sat., Jan. 19 from 5 until 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. until service time.

She was united in marriage to William Warren Jones on July 18, 1944. Mr. Jones preceded her in death on September 18, 1993.

Mrs. Jones was a member of the Eastview church of Christ. Her hobby was collecting bells.

She is survived by her children Opal Mullins and husband Jim of Walls, MS, Betty Harville and husband Ray of Pickwick Dam, Tenn., Pauline Mealer of Selmer, Katie Mullins of Las Vegas, NV, Tina Naylor and husband Bobby of Memphis, and Roy Jones and wife Iva of Jackson, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren. A host of extended family and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by a grandson, Perry Mullins. She was also preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

Larry Junior Hamm Larry Junior (BOT) (Hambone) Hamm was born on July 30, 1948 in Hardin County to Sherman M. and Agnes Ruth Kiddy Hamm, who preceded him in death. On October 20, 1987, he was united in marriage to Kathy Gray.

Larry was employed by Adamsville Sand and Gravel, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator. He enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, fishing and spending time with his family, especially his grandbabies, his great-grandbaby, and his beloved dog, “lil” man. Larry departed this life on January 14, 2013 at the age of 64 years, 5 months and 15 days.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Hamm of Adamsville, Tennessee; a stepdaughter, Lynn Hill of Savannah, Tennessee; two sisters, Barbra Parrott of Adamsville, Tennessee and Annie Mae Carson of Stantonville, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Brittany Clenney of Savannah, Tennessee, Jonathan Clenney of Enville, Tennessee and Lukas Clenney of Enville, Tennessee and one greatgrandchild, Alyvia Cox of Savannah, Tennessee.

Together, for the past 6 years, he and Christine served (Mike) as Executive Pastor then Lead Pastor, (Christine) Director of Music and Dinner Theatre Ministry, at Heritage Church Assemblies of God in Dublin, VA ministering to a congregation of 350+. The success of their Dinner Theatre saw over 800 in attendance and they organized a Food Pantry where over 14,000 people were fed in 2011.

While serving at Heritage Church they established a successful ministry seeing over 70% of their church involved in some type of ministry, small groups and outreach.

Pastor Mike shares, “After doing full-time ministry for over seventeen years, I believe God is leading us toward something more. Everything God has put under us has seen great growth and astounding blessings; although you know as well as I that it is “He who works through us.” It is in our hearts to see what God can do through us in a larger community. My life in ministry revolves around leadership. Growing, preparing, and empowering others for God’s work in their lives. Dewberry, Smith complete St. Jude Half Marathon

Linda Dewberry and Amy Smith completed the St. Jude Half Marathon last month. This year they raised over $4,400 for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. In 5 years, they have raised over $17,000 for St. Jude. They are part of Team Corinth which was the number 6 top fundraising team raising money this year. The team has raised $121,000 in five years. Lady Cardinals Deanna Taylor, Emily Surratt, Amron Forsythe, Kaytlin Blattler, Nicole Ross, Breanna Taylor, and Kanesha Wright celebrate their Sectional win over Bartlett last Saturday.

The Adamsville High School Lady Cardinal bowling team made history last Saturday, becoming the first female bowling team at AHS to advance to the state competition with a 19-8 win over Bartlett High School in their Sectional match at Strike Zone Lanes in Southaven, Miss.

Picking up their 10th win of the season, the Lady Cards won the match with a total pinfall of 2,824-2,526. Amron Forsythe rolled a 490 series with her high game of 235 coming in her third and final game of the day.

Forsythe, who was named Region 7 Female Bowler of the Year following the region tournament on Jan. 10, was named as a finalist for the Tennessee State Bowling Proprietors Association

Miss Bowler of the Year award earlier in the week. The winner will be announced on Thursday.

Against Bartlett, Breanna Taylor led the Lady Cards with a match-high series of 540 on games of 148, 211, and 181. Her sister, Deanna Taylor, rolled a 502 series on games of 161, 178, and 163. Emily Surratt added a high game of 199, Kanesha Wright posted a high game of 186, and Nicole Ross rolled a 144.

Adamsville takes a 10-3 record to the state competition with all three losses coming against the undefeated, two-time defending state champion Hardin County Lady Tigers, who defeated White Station 20-7 in their Sectional match to advance as well.

Seniors CJ Barnes and Stuart Littlejohn combined to score more than half of the Bobcats' points in a win against Jackson Central-Merry last Friday at McNairy Central.

Barnes led the Bobcats with a doubledouble, scoring 31 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Littlejohn poured in seven points. Tied at the end of the third quarter, Barnes propelled the offense and carried

“We shot the ball well from the threepoint line and the free-throw line,” said MCHS head coach Steve Forsythe. “That was the difference in the game.”

The Bobcats came out ready to play in the first quarter and jumped out to a 13-6 lead after the first period.

Unfortunately, the Bobcats were not able to hold on to the lead, and a second quarter surge from the Cougars gave them a 27-26 lead going into halftime.

It was all Lady Bobcats in the first half as McNairy Central was able to get all involved while they steadily pulled away from the Lady Cougars.

“Everyone scored, and we got to get a lot of our young players playing time,” said head coach Jerry Lott.

The Lady Cats led 45-1 at halftime. JCM’s only point came on a free throw in the first quarter.

Many of the starters never played after the first quarter making room for the younger players to step up. Freshman Kaitlyn West answered the call with 18 points to lead MCHS in scoring, and sophomore Haven Phelps scored nine.

After the first half, the Lady Cats only gave up 14 more points the entire game and came away with a decisive win against the Cougars.

Charging toward the next level

aylor Hutton’s life has been all about the game of softball since she first stepped into a pitching circle at the age of six. Last Thursday, she committed two more years to the game when she signed to play for the Columbia State Community College Lady Chargers.

“I really like the campus and its proximity to home,” said Hutton about what will soon be her new home. “It’s a lot like it is here, so it made me feel comfortable. I’m in love with the program and the people there.”

Hutton plans to major in communication with a focus in journalism, saying that she has been a fan of sports and reading the news her whole life, so combining the two should come naturally to her.

Hutton said Columbia State has all the right tools to prepare her for the college game, and she feels like the environment at the school will allow her to not only become a better athlete, but a better student as well.

Along with hitting the books hard, Hutton has always put forth the effort to excel on the softball field. She is devoted to the sport so much so that she rarely takes a break from it, spending her summers and falls playing fastpitch travel ball with multiple teams for the past nine years.

“Taylor is a very special kid. She always puts

her team first,” said Aftershock summer ball head coach Jody Sigler, who drove in from Munford, Tenn. to witness Hutton’s signing. “Columbia State is getting a very team-oriented player although she will produce and help on the field and in the circle...She’s got a great attitude and comes to play ball everyday. You couldn’t ask for much more.”

Not only has Hutton been a success on the softball field, the senior is the only female, three-sport athlete in Adamsville’s Class of 2013.

She has advanced to the Div. I Individual State Golf Tournament three times in her high school career, and she is a member of the Lady Cardinal basketball team – a team that made it all the way to Sectionals one year ago.

In 45 varsity appearances in the pitching circle for AHS softball team, Hutton has struck out 190 of the batters she has faced while maintaining a 3.09 career earned run average.

Her ERA was down from 3.39 her sophomore season to 1.35 her junior season, further exemplifying how her hard work is manifesting itself on the playing field.

Hutton began playing softball on the high school level for Adamsville head coach Todd McGee in eighth-grade, but their relationship has been growing for longer than that.

“I met Taylor 10 to 12 years ago,” said McGee. “She’s developed a whole lot since. She’s become physically better and mentally tougher as she’s developed over the years. She’s a hard worker and plays the game a whole lot. As much

as anything else, her work ethic has been an asset to her ability to achieve this.”

McGee said the Lady Cardinals are privileged to have an anchor on their staff like Hutton, and he thinks her signing with CSCC before the season will work to her and the team’s advantage.

“It relieves a lot of pressure for her,” he said.

“She won’t feel the pressure to perform so she can get a chance to [sign with a school] because she knocked it out on the front end.”

Hutton said she is grateful for everything her coaches at Adamsville have done for her.

“They’ve really helped me grow as a softball player. They’ve fine-tuned my skills and made me a smarter player situationally,” she said.

While she has learned a lot from Sigler, McGee, and Adamsville assistant coach Rebecca Ashe, her biggest influence and best teachers have been her parents, Blaine and Tee Hutton.

“My parents have been the biggest influence in my life,” Hutton said. “They’ve always encouraged my dreams and helped me follow my dreams. Wherever I wanted to go,

Hutton’s gene pool lacks nothing when it comes to athletic prowess. Her mother, Tee, played basketball for Dyersburg State and Lambuth and also coached the sport for 18 years, and her father, Blaine, played golf for Martin-Methodist. They bring their support, enthusiasm, and instruction to nearly every sporting event in which their daughter competes, according to Hutton.

At the next level, Hutton will be coached by a champion. According to the school’s official softball page, Columbia State head coach Johnny Littrell began coaching fast-pitch softball in 1988 and has since won seven State Championships while qualifying for multiple national tournaments. Since beginning his tenure at CSCC in 2003, Littrell has led the Lady Chargers to a 264-163 record overall.

While Hutton knows little about them right now, she says she is excited to become more familiar with her new coaches when her senior season at AHS concludes, and she is looking forward to the challenges that will be presented as she charges toward the next level.

The Tigers completed the season-sweep of Adamsville last Friday when the Cardinals traveled to Middleton High School for a District 15-A contest.

Continuing a long-standing stretch of misfortune against Middleton, Adamsville came home from its district game against the Tigers empty-handed once again.

Only four Cardinals scored for Adamsville in the contest as the team shot 48 percent from the field on 15-of-31 shooting. AHS hit only three of its 16 threepoint attempts.

Tucker Campbell, who is averaging about 13 points per game, stepped up for the Cards and recorded team highs in scoring and rebounding, finishing with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Lane Burcham hit six of his 12 shots from the field to finish with 18 for AHS. He was 6-for-9 from the free-throw line.

Adamsville trailed by just eight at halftime, but Middleton came out strong in the second half and outscored the Cardinals 37-24 to pick up their fourth district win of the season.

Dating back to the 2006-2007 season, AHS has lost 16 games in a row and 17 of their last 18 against Middleton.

A woeful shooting night did not help the Lady Cardinals’ effort on the road against a tough Middleton team that saw two players, Avery Joy and Deja Faulkner, account for more points than Adamsville scored all night.

Senior Keantinez Lloyd dropped 18 points for Adamsville to lead the team in scoring, but the team shot just 38 percent from the field on 10-of-26 shooting.

The Lady Cards also turned the ball over 17 times. Joy scored 35 for Middleton, and Faulkner finished with 20.

“We played pretty well, but we didn’t have an answer for [Joy],” said Lady Cardinal head coach Kevin McClain. “We cut their lead to nine points in the fourth quarter, and then made two turnovers, and they hit their layups and pretty much sealed the deal.”

Middleton enjoyed a seven-point lead after the first quarter, and the Lady Tigers led 39-28 at halftime.

Adamsville outscored their counterparts in the third quarter, but the Lady Cardinal offense hit a snag in the fourth as they were outscored 18-7 in the final period.

The Lady Cards have lost 10 of their last 13 games against the Lady Tigers, dating back to the 2008-2009 season.

Selmer’s Lady Lions picked up their seventh consecutive win at Hardin County Middle School last Thursday, but the boys struggled against the Tigers.

Though they led for the majority of the game, a fourth quarter eruption aided the Lady Lions’ 10th win of the season.

Selmer got major contributions from Ansley Craig and Selika McCord against the Lady Tigers. Craig finished with a team-high 10 points while McCord pulled down 15 rebound and had five steals to go along with her nine points.

The Lady Lions held Hardin County to four first half points and held a nine-point lead at halftime. Selmer came out sluggish after the break, allowing the Lady Tigers to cut their lead to five points, but the team rallied in the fourth and put up 18 points to solidify the win.

Selmer (10-2, 7-0) will close out the regular season with a road game in Michie on Thursday.

The Adamsville freshmen teams had blowouts on their minds last Thursday when the Tishomingo County Braves paid the Cardinals a visit.

Defense was the name of the game for the Lady Cardinals as they held Tishomingo County to less than five points in all four quarters.

Robin Moore led the way for Adamsville, scoring 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the field. Bethany Johnson knocked down a three-pointer for AHS in the second quarter and finished the game with seven points.

The Lady Cards went into halftime with a 20-8 lead before continuing their dominating performance in the second half. Trailing by 16 when the quarter began, the Lady Braves were held to just one point in the fourth as Adamsville cruised to a 26-point win.

In convincing fashion, the Cardinals picked up their first freshman win of the year by blowing out the Braves.

The 25-point victory was led by Darrius Sanders, who scored a team-high 14 points after transferring to Adamsville following the Christmas break.

The Cards attacked fast and furiously, building an 18-2 lead in the first quarter. By halftime, the AHS led 35-7.

Adamsville called off the dogs in the second half and still coasted to an easy win.

Hardin County's boys had not lost a game to a McNairy County team all year, and that did not change last Thursday when the Tigers hosted the Selmer Lions.

SMS found a way to put points on the board in the first and third quarter, and the Lions held the Tigers under 10 points in the second and fourth quarters, but Selmer could not mesh the quality offensive and defensive play together in any of the four.

“I was pleased with the way we came out and played tonight,” said Lion head coach Stacy Riley. “We played hard throughout the game and made adjustments against a very good team, but we have to do a better job of limiting second chance shots.”

Hardin County led 23-10 at halftime and outscored SMS 23-12 in the second in route to the team's 17th win of the season.

Selmer (1-11, 0-7) will look for its first county win on Thursday when the team heads to Michie to wrap up the regular season.

Brothers Face-off in Super ‘Baugh’ The San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens will meet at the Superdome in New Orleans, La., on Feb. 3, for Super Bowl XLVII. For the first time in Super Bowl history, opposing teams will be coached by brothers. Jim Harbaugh’s 49ers defeated the Atlanta Falcons 28-24, and his brother, John’s, Ravens defeated the New England Patriots 28-13 in the conference championship games last Sunday to advance to the big game. San Francisco has played in five Super Bowls (1982, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1995), and Baltimore has played in one (2001), but neither team has ever lost when making it this far. The Lady Eagles and the Lady Devils had a great battle, but it was Michie who came away with the win. However, the Blue Devils were not able to complete the sweep at Ramer.

The game bounced back and forth between these two county rivals and saw a 1313 tie going into halftime.

The Lady Eagles, led by Olivia Harris and Allison Sweat, both of which scored six points, turned on the offense in the second half. Ramer took a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Blue Devils battled back and made a run late in the fourth quarter to pull away and take the county win.

Michie (11-2, 6-1) traveled to Hardin County last Tuesday, and Ramer (7-7, 2-5) will play for county tournament seeding when the Lady Eagles head to Adamsville on Thursday.

Rebels repel Cards in home finale

After acknowledging the departing class at Bethel’s eighth-grade recognition last Thursday, the Rebels came out and put an exclamation point on the night by sweeping Adamsville to close out their final home games.

A rough first half cost the Cardinals a big win last Thursday when Adamsville made the ride out to Bethel.

“We came out a little flat and missed too many shots to compete with a good Bethel team on the road,” said Adamsville head coach Chad Austin.

The Rebels led by only two in after the first quarter, but they exploded offensively in the second, outscoring the Cards 17-4 to take a 26-11 lead at halftime. Adamsville could not make up any ground as the teams exchanged blows, playing the final two quarters as competitively as the first.

Bethel’s Jeremiah Sanders was big for the Rebels, scoring 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting and pulling down 12 rebounds for his second double-double in as many games. Adamsville’s Tyler Luna led the Cards with 11 points.

The Cardinals (7-5, 4-3) hosted the Pickwick Southside Eagles, and the Rebels (10-3, 6-2) traveled to Savannah Christian Academy last Tuesday after deadline.

After a hard-fought first three quarters of the heated rivalry matchup, the Lady Rebels put together a solid final quarter to steal a win away from the visiting Lady Cardinals.

“We kind of lost momentum in the second and third quarters,” said Bethel head coach Skylar Crayton. “Adamsville started hitting a few shots, but in the fourth quarter we stepped up our game and showed what we are capable of. I appreciated the effort our eight-graders had because they ended their last game on this court very well.”

Trailing by three coming out of the locker room at halftime, the Lady Cards rallied to take a third quarter lead when Alexis Wynn hit a three to put Adamsville up 12-11 with a little more than two minutes to play.

Bethel regained the lead before the end of the third, and the Lady Rebels were all business in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Cards 10-3 to cap off the nine-point victory. Macey Rowland led the way for the Lady Rebs, recording a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Lady Cardinals (1-12, 0-7) hosted the Pickwick Southside, and the Lady Rebels (8-5, 3-5) traveled to Savannah Christian Academy last Tuesday after deadline.

SWHRA Head Start to hold Pre-Registration

What children are expected to know and do upon entering kindergarten is much more than what it used to be. Not only do they have to their know colors, shapes, and numbers, there are many other skills that must be mastered socially, emotionally, and physically. So I ask you…Is your child ready to go to kindergarten? Let us help you and your family be sure that your child is indeed ready for school.

In the picture, Ms. Becky Bridges is using blocks to help develop the concepts of “taller & shorter” and “more & less.” Ms. Becky’s son was enrolled in the program back in 1994, and – although new to the Selmer Center – she has been with us for 16 years in Hardeman County. She is currently working on her BA in Early Childhood Education. Her assistant, Ms. Michelle Chaney, also began her career at Head Start as a parent of enrolled children.

Her involvement in our program resulted in being hired as a substitute before landing her current position as an assistant. She will finish her CDA soon.

The Southwest Human Resource Agency’s Head Start program is a free pre-school program for children of families that qualify based on income, disabilities, and family circumstances. Head Start is a comprehensive program that focuses on all areas of a child’s development – including medical and dental services, nutritional services, family services, and educational experiences for the entire family. Head Start does not provide transportation.

Head Start in McNairy County will be conducting a pre-registration for three and fouryear-old children to attend classes beginning in the fall of 2013 on Tuesday, Jan. 22, Wednesday, Jan. 23, and Thursday, Jan. 24th, from 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the following Head Start locations: 705 Industrial Park in Selmer (Amy at 645-8953), 4186 Hwy 57 West in Ramer (Angie at 646-0169), and 305 Hughes Street in Adamsville (Sharla at 632-5116).

County ACT prep course Free workshop for area educators MARTIN, Tenn. – An ACT preparation course for students will be offered from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturdays, Feb 2- March 16, at the University of Tennessee at Martin McNairy County Center/Selmer.

Alex Beene, REDI coordinator, will instruct the course. Instruction will be focused on test-taking strategies for math, English, reading and science sections.

The course utilizes materials from Cambridge Educational Services. Cambridge has developed the most comprehensive, scientific and accountable method of preparing for high-stakes standardized tests. Cambridge textbooks include extensive basic-skills review for all sections of each test. Students learn how to complete test problems based on question frequency, difficulty, substantive knowledge, curriculum and alternative test-taking strategies.

Students will be given an official, retired test at the first course meeting.

After reviewing the math, English, reading, and science sections, students take a second official, retired test under real test conditions, guaranteeing a valid pre- and post-test comparison.

Students will also receive a copy of their assessment report. The instructors will then use the assessment reports from the post-test to provide students with a one-week personal study plan for those last few days before the exam. The instructors schedule one-on-one meetings with students to discuss their personal study plan.

The registration fee to attend is $225. Included in the fee are two ACT Tests and diagnostic reports and two textbooks: ACT Cambridge Textbook 11th Edition and The Big Book of Skills Textbook 11th Edition. There will be no class March 2 and 9, and individual meetings will be held March 20 and 21.

The course is sponsored by the UT Martin Office of Extended Campus and Online Studies and will be held at the center, located at 1269 Tennessee Ave. in Selmer. An exact location for the course will be given upon registration.

UT announces fall semester Dean’s List KNOXVILLE—The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has posted its dean’s list for fall 2012.

To qualify for the dean’s list, an undergraduate student must earn a term grade point average of 3.80–4.00 (summa cum laude), 3.65–3.79 (magna cum laude), or 3.50–3.64 (cum laude).

Since 1989, the movie National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation has been a favorite for many people everywhere.

The movie tracks the life of the Griswold family through the holiday season, highlighting the follies of Clark (the father) as he struggles to create the perfect family holiday. For example, Clark accidentally shuts down the entire power grid by lighting his extravagant Christmas decorations.

Hopefully, the students of McNairy Central High School did not have as difficult a Christmas vacation as Clark Griswold and his family.

Russell Ingle, Director of Chamber Programs for the McNairy Regional Alliance, visited MCHS on Friday, Jan. 18. He spoke with the Business Principles and Accounting class about the economic environment in McNairy County. Students discussed how technology, specifically social media, has impacted the business environment and ways that McNairy County could grow economically. Several local business successes and failures were discussed, and what the community might do to improve our economic system. Mr. Ingle concluded by saying that students should
