Storm pounds Bethel

Possible tornado leaves swath of destruction

Cleanup continues Volunteers key to recovery effort By Jeff Whitten and Christen Coulon Staff Writers

A strong storm wreaked havoc in Bethel Springs and Rose Creek in the early morning hours last Wednesday. Trees were blown down, power lines snapped and nearly 100 homes were damaged in the storm. McNairy County Emergency Management Director Rudy Moore said that cleanup efforts were ongoing, though returning power to customers was the priority. He estimated that 85 homes and around 15 mobile homes were damaged, but he was not aware of any injuries. Officially, the National Weather Service said that the damage was caused by a microburst, but many of the local residents who witnessed the storm first-hand believe it was a tornado. At one point, early-on during the storm, emergency personnel were dispatched to the Rose Creek area on a fire call related to the storm. Rose Creek Road was blocked near Highway 64 by multiple fallen trees, and as emergency workers cut their way through to the call, multiple calls began coming in for assistance in Bethel Springs. Because of the scale of the damage, and reports of a man stuck under a trailer on South Parkway, emergency dispatchers made a desperate call for anyone with a chainsaw who was listening to their broadcast to help cut trees on South Parkway to allow emergency workers through to rescue the trapped man. Deborah Sullivan, Bethel’s City Clerk, said that the man who was trapped under the trailer was Shawn Murphy. “(He is)doing pretty good,” Sullivan said. “I think he was just spooked.” There were also reports of a couple

trapped inside a vehicle which was hit by a falling tree, however by the time workers arrived to assist on that call the victims had freed themselves. In fact, despite the widespread damage, no serious injuries were reported as a result of the storm.

Overwhelming Damage

Brad Howell of PEC said that about 1,200 people originally lost power, and 60 poles and 40 transformers were damaged. He said most people had their power restored by last Thursday and now all power has been restored to anyone who can receive it. Luckily, most of the businesses in Bethel Springs were undamaged in the storm and are now open. However, Vernon’s Custom Woodworks and King Brothers Inc. did sustain significant damage to their buildings. “It took all the metal off the top of the building and it’s leaking,” said Larry King of King Brothers Inc. “It’s all soaked. Everything in there is wet. The damage is unbelievable. We have three trucks damaged. It’s unbelievable how it will touch one building and there will be no damage to the building right beside it.” A building was destroyed at the corner of Purdy Bethel Road and Main Street in Bethel, and multiple gas leaks were reported across the city by fire personnel and first responders to the National Weather Service. Schools were closed last week from Wednesday through Friday because of the storm damage. Bethel Springs Elementary School took a direct hit from the storm. “We had two places on the roof where we sustained pretty good roof damage,” said
