Chaos reigns at Bethel meetings

Criminal Defense • Circuit Court & General Sessions Court • Divorce & Family Law • Personal Injury

By Jeff Whitten and Christen Coulon Staff Writers

We know what you’re thinking. That’s not really news. It’s not the first time. This time was different. This publication has covered every Bethel Springs town meeting for many years, but we’ve never seen anything like what was witnessed at the working session on Feb. 5 and the town meeting last Monday. Before last Monday’s meeting was over, the city announced that it would likely go further into debt. One alderman stormed out of the building while cursing another. A city employee was suspended. Allegations were made concerning violations of the Sunshine Law and the Open Meetings Act, and accusations were made that the city gave an overpriced, un-bid contract to the son of one of its employees.

Special note: Because the format of each meeting followed an agreed upon schedule of events, we have decided to cover this story listing topics in chronological order as they were addressed at the working meeting on Feb. 5, followed by their resolution at the monthly meeting last Monday. Coverage of the working meeting will appear in regular type and coverage of the monthly meeting will appear in boldface type.

FATHER DAUGHTER DANCE

Following nearly 30 minutes of dispute over how to craft a motion to limit use of city vehicles during off-duty hours, frustrated Bethel Springs Alderman John Woods shares a few choice words with fellow Alderman Gary Bizzell, Jr. before storming out of the building.

LATE BREAKING NEWS: Michie fire, four-vehicle accident

See BETHEL SPRINGS, 5A

A fire destroyed a house on the 280 block of John George Loop in Michie in the early morning hours last Tuesday. William Driskell, the owner of the home, had been notified of the fire and was on the scene. He said that the home had belonged to his mother who is deceased and that someone had also stolen a van from the property last Friday. Driskell said that he thought the fire was suspicious because it had no electricity at the time of the fire and there were no occupants living at the residence. He said that the home was uninsured. Volunteer fire departments from Michie, Pleasant Site and Stantonville were on the scene to control the fire.

MICHIE HOME DESTROYED

A serious accident on Hwy 64 East at mile marker 20 near Adamsville left at least one man injured and damaged four vehicles. The accident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. last Monday when a silver Dodge Ram 1500 with Henderson County license plates, driven by Duane Lamdon, struck a white Dodge Ram 3500 driven by Phillip Humphrey of Savannah. Lt. David Killinsworth of the Tennessee Highway Patrol said that Lamdon’s vehicle rear-ended Humphrey’s truck, which was towing two vehicles on a trailer, as it slowed to turn right into Git’Er Done Equipment Rentals. Emergency workers had to extract Lamdon from his vehicle following the accident. He was then transported via medivac helicopter to a hospital. Humphrey was on his feet following the accident, but said that he would seek medical attention once the scene was clear. At the time of the accident, Humphrey’s truck, which is owned by Git’Er Done, was hauling a red Oldsmobile Intrigue and a tan Chevy Tahoe. All four vehicles involved appeared to have sustained damage in the accident.
