Hendrix shares lessons learned through lifetime of success

INSIDE THIS WEEK

By Christen Coulon and Jeff Whitten Independent Appeal Staff

Tom Hendrix is one of the most successful businessmen in McNairy County history. As he stands on the threshold of a new phase of his life with the closing of Henco, he spoke to the Independent Appeal about his business and his life. Business success starts with a good idea, according to the Henco founder and chairman. “When Sherry and I came into this, out of retirement at 65, I wanted to create the most up-to-date furniture store in the Mid-South,” Hendrix said. The Bethel Springs native had never been in the retail furniture business before he founded Henco.

Attempted Murder

July 2012 assault case nets new charges against Scott By Christen Coulon Managing Editor

Christopher R. Scott has been charged with attempted second degree murder stemming from the July attack of his aunt and grandmother. Scott is accused of assaulting his aunt Pamela Pitts, 52, and his grandmother Earline Kirby on July 2, 2012 at 235 State St. in Selmer. Scott was previously charged with especially aggravated burglary, aggravated assault and theft of property in the case, however, according to Lt. Tony Miller of the SCOTT Selmer Police Department, the charges were bumped up after reviewing some recently obtained evidence which included lab tests and victim statements. Officers were previously reviewing the charges against Scott after one of the victims, Pitts, died on Dec. 24, 2012. At that time Miller said, “We will have to wait to see what the doctor says and get a ruling on her cause of death.” Following this week’s announcement of the attempted murder charge, Miller said that he did not foresee murder charges being filed in this case. Scott, 33 of Milledgeville, reportedly stole his grandmother’s 2003 Chevy Impala following the attack and fled the area. Scott was next seen hours later at a hospital in Collierville, Tenn. where he was reported to have told hospital employees that he had killed his aunt and

This year, the second annual “For the Love of Literacy” dessert tasting fundraiser drew hundreds to the Selmer Community Center to celebrate Valentine’s Day and raise money for adult education. Last Thursday’s event brought in more than $5,100 for the McNairy County Literacy Council. The 21 vendor booths with delicious confections, live band and free photography booth offered something for everyone. The event was sponsored by the Independent Appeal and was supported by dozens of local vendors, financial contributors and door prize donations. This year Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial of Selmer and their representatives Carolyn Bowers and Darren Bowers matched all donations for the fundraiser, putting up $2,500 for adult education. This year, vendors competed for three coveted awards including Best Dessert, People’s Choice Award and the Best Valentine’s Theme Presentation. The people’s

choice award was chosen by attendees’ cash contributions for each vendor, the presentation award was chosen by event organizers and the best dessert was chosen by a panel of local judges. McNairy County Mayor Ronnie Brooks, Guys Mayor Keith Rineheart, Adamsville City Administrator Steve Simon, Selmer Alderman John Smith, and Bethel Springs Alderman Sherry Smith all took on the difficult task of tasting each dessert and deciding a winner for this year’s event. The People’s Choice Award was taken home by Rockabilly Cafe with the honorable mention award going to First Christian Church. This year’s Best Valentine’s Theme Presentation Award went to Arts in McNairy with Rockabilly Cafe earning their second award of the evening as honorable mention in this category, and the Best Dessert Award was earned by BancorpSouth Bank with McNairy County Adult Education finishing a close second to take the honorable mention. “Everything was wonderful,” said Patsy Pearson, event organizer and supervisor at

Ptl. Quentin Garland, of the Selmer Police Department, was arrested for domestic assault Feb. 10. According to an offense report filed by arresting officer Robert “Bob” Pipkins and provided by SPD, he received a call from Inv. Lynn Ingle, GARLAND asking Pipkins to meet him at Garland’s residence at 801 Circle Hill Dr. in Selmer in regards to a domestic disturbance. Pipkins talked to Garland’s live-in girlfriend, who said she and Garland got into an argument. She said that Garland went into her bedroom, picked her up and threw her onto the floor. She then got up and hit Garland, who pinned her on the bed and would not let her up. The woman said she then hit Garland with a lamp, knocking him off her. She told Pipkins she grabbed her phone, but Garland took it away and went outside. She followed him and took the phone away from him. Garland then left in his car. Garland returned to the residence while Pipkins was there. Garland told Pipkins that he and his girlfriend got into an argument. She punched him in the face several times and he knocked her to the floor, he told Pipkins. Pipkins observed evidence that Garland had been drinking. He then arrested Garland and took him to the McNairy County jail. Garland was booked and released on $100,000 bail, according to a spokesman
