Bethel Springs may get government aid for the storm damage suffered Jan. 31, after all. Though the damage didn’t fit the requirements in order for the federal government to declare it a disaster area, it is under consideration for a new state program designed for these very circumstances. Bethel is under consideration for funding from the Rebuild and Recover Program from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency, according to THDA Executive Director Ralph M. Perrey. Perry, McNairy County Mayor Ronnie Brooks, THDA Director of Community Programs Coralee Holloway, THDA Communications Coordinator Josh Gibson and Bethel Springs Disaster Recovery Coordinator Norma Smith toured the damage last Thursday. “What we wanted to do is to be able to help, primarily in smaller communities where you’ve had a natural disaster, maybe it’s a tornado or a windstorm like here in Bethel Springs, maybe it’s a flash flood like in Dry Creek in Washington County. Those are things that are never going to rise to FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), may not even get on TEMA’s (Tennessee Emergency Management Agency) radar screen, but you’ve still got dozens of people who’ve had some serious damage, communities that may not have a lot of resources to Staff Photo by Jeff Whitten call on and need some help. Latest Habitat family moves into new home By Christen Coulon Managing Editor

McNairy County Habitat for Humanity dedicated its newest house to a family of four last Thursday at 107 Lynn St. in Adamsville. Betty Garrison, president of the McNairy County Habitat for Humanity, said that during her time serving as the local Habitat president, the organization has placed three families in homes. She said that every time a new family moves into their home, it is overwhelming. “It is all because of God and his work that we are here,” Garrison said. “We are based on Jesus Christ and this is all about sharing his love by giving someone a home (with an interest-free loan) who otherwise would not have one.” Garrison said that Habitat is currently seeking a family for their next home. She said that hopefully she would know who that family is and where they are planning to build very soon. “This is such a great organization, and these are such great people that we work with,” Garrison said. The Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity for Tennessee, Colleen Dudley, was on hand for last Thursday’s dedication and said, “Habitat...builds homes for people in need, and it does so in a partnership with the fam-

ily. Each family has to qualify based on income. They have to make a house payment, because we use those payments to build even more homes in the community. They attend homeowner education classes. They also have to put in sweat equity, which is where they work 300-500 hours on their home.” Dudley said that Habitat’s goal is to break the poverty cycle by placing these families in their own homes and teaching them how to be sustainable on their own. She said that each year the state’s Habitat builds more than 250 homes each year which adds more than $55 million to the state economy. She said that Tennessee has the fourth largest Habitat organization in the nation, and per capita it builds more than any other state. Dudley also thanked the Tennessee Housing Development Agency for their financial support, saying that the agency is responsible for allowing them to do their jobs. “We have a working relationship with (Habitat) on a number of levels,” said Ralph Perrey, executive director of THDA “What we do is provide a large grant through our community programs, and this supports the construction of homes across the state.
