Bethel Springs residents were left stunned following their monthly meeting last Monday as the town’s long-time Police Chief T.E. “Pee-Wee” Sowell announced his retirement effective April 30. Sowell, who has been in law enforcement for nearly 50 years, will likely leave his post as the longest serving active-duty police officer in the nation. Sowell’s resignation came at the end of another long Bethel meeting in which the block of newly elected aldermen Shirley Williams, Sherry Smith, and Gary Bizzell, Jr., solidified their power base, worked to strip Mayor Kay Cox of many of her mayoral powers and fired the town’s water manager. For the fourth consecutive year, the Carl Perkins Center held its annual Dancing with the McNairy Stars last Saturday night at McNairy Central High School. The event raised $40,000, and all proceeds will be used to help McNairy County children. “Dancing with the McNairy Stars was the biggest, best and most successful one we have ever had. There were 75 tables and each one was filled, bringing in over 530 people,” said the center’s county director, Luke
DeLaVergne. The night began with a silent auction, dinner and a performance by Haley Barber Korban, followed by the dance performances. Six local dance couples performed in the night’s main event. Each displayed extraordinary creativity and in times comedic relief, which made for some very entertaining performances. Ross Mitchell and Terri Tacker pulled out the the stops for their dance number to “Jailhouse Rock.” The couple raised $9,000 for the campaign,

Domestic assault charges have been dropped against Selmer policeman Quinton Garland, according to a General Session Court docket sheet. The charges were dismissed on March 21 due to insufficient evidence. The alleged victim, Jalessa Westbrooks, asserted her right against self-incrimination after the preliminary hearing. Selmer Police Chief Neal Burks told the Independent Appeal last Monday that it had not yet been determined whether or not Garland would be rehired.

The McNairy Central Future Farmers of America Farm Business Management team won the State Championship last week at the Tennessee FFA State Convention in Gatlinburg, Tenn. The team members, Brook Holland, Christa Sides, Max Sellers, Sam Hawkins and Austin Ervin will move on to represent Tennessee at the National Contest in Louisville, Ky. in October at the National FFA Convention. This contest requires students to be able to evaluate cash flows, balance sheets, crop and livestock budgets, tax returns, and profit and loss statements. They must also be proficient in evaluating hedging transactions, compound interest, as well as equipment depreciation and salvage values. The Independent Appeal would like to congratulate the championship team for their efforts and wish them luck as they move on to nationals this fall.
McNairy County students were treated to an unexpected three-day weekend last week as water issues at the Ramer School forced a districtwide school closure on Friday. According to Principal Rusty Petty, the closure was due to minor flooding caused by three burst water lines at the school which occurred last Wednesday afternoon. Two of the three lines were inside the school and caused about 1-2 inches of flooding in four classrooms. Petty said the water line breaks occurred when the school temporarily switched to Eastview water as the Ramer water tower was being cleaned. Petty said that the water lines had been fixed by last Thursday afternoon and teachers were coming in Thursday and Friday to clean the damaged rooms. “We will be ready to roll Monday morning,” Petty said. The incident forced district officials to initially close Ramer School only last Thursday and, as it became apparent that the school would not be ready for Friday, a district-wide closure was called for that day. “Because of the network...and configuration of our schools, what happens in one place impacts the rest of the district,” said Assistant Director of Schools and Supervisor of Instruction for
