Chief Jerry Christopher of the Adamsville Police Department said that the first suspect, Shawn Wisnieski of Adamsville, was arrested last Friday by the APD. Christopher said that the second suspect in the case, Kevin Lane of Stantonville, was arrested last Monday by Inv. Robert Hitchborn of the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department. Both suspects now face burglary and theft charges stemming from the case.

APD has been investigating the case since April after thieves broke into the school and stole six iPods, an iPad, a cell phone and one laptop computer. According to the police report, Principal Danny Combs. contacted police and said that someone had broken into the school. He said that the suspects apparently entered from the roof and were captured on surveillance video. The APD handled the overall investigation into the case. However, Christopher said that assistance was provided by the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department in the later stages of the investigation.

Bethel Springs will get some aid from the state, County Mayor Ronnie Brooks told a town hall meeting last Tuesday in Bethel Springs. The funds will come from the Rebuild and Recover Program from Tennessee Housing Development Agency. Brooks said he could not yet give an exact amount. “It’s a substantial amount,” Brooks said. The funds will help those whose insurance did not cover all of their damage. “We will probably be releasing a little bit more about that later,” Brooks said. Brooks said county officials originally hoped that money would be forthcoming to reimburse the county highway depart-

ment for expenses it incurred for storm cleanup, but it would not. “They did come through with a nice plan to help people who are displaced and whose property was completely destroyed,” Brooks said. In March, THDA Director Ralph Perrey, Brooks, Bethel Springs Disaster Recovery Coordinator Norma Smith and other THDA officials toured the damage from strong storms that pounded Bethel Springs on Jan. 31. This program is designed to help small communities like Bethel Springs, deal with such natural disasters as tornadoes or flash floods, which do not cause a sufficient amount of damage to reach the dollar threshold for aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency or the Tennessee Emergency Management Agen-

cy. Under the program, small grants can be obtained as seed money for other funding and homeowners may be able to get second mortgages at a 4 percent interest rate. Other possible aid includes six-month housing vouchers for homeowners and their families while their home is undergoing repairs and no-interest loans for home repair. Mayor Brooks explained how he became interested in politics. “I always wanted to get in politics because of my grandaddy,” Brooks said. “Especially during election time, people (were) coming to the house constantly. My grandaddy would sit down there and they would talk politics. I would sit there as a kid amazed,” Brooks said about the

NEXT WEEK MCHS BIDS FAREWELL TO BELOVED PRINCIPAL McNairy Central High School’s Principal Cecil Stroup has announced plans to retire from the school at the end of this school year. Read next week’s Independent Appeal for full coverage of this story and reactions from students, parents and community members.

The owner of a Selmer gas station is in hot water again following a raid at his store on April 26. Arif Abdo Almudhala, 43, was arrested on three felony counts of distribution of salvia divinorum (synthetic cannabinoids) better known as “fake weed,” and felony possession and distribution of drug paraphernalia after the McNairy County Narcotics Unit conducted a search warrant at his store, the Selmer Flash Market Citgo located at 152 East Court Ave. in Selmer. According to a release from Lt. Brad Johnson of the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department, Almudhala’s store was the center of the ongoing investigation. During the raid, approximately 45 illegal items were seized, including multiple bottles of the illegal “fake weed” $3,641 in US currency and a 2009 Acura. Johnson was listed as the arresting officer with Inv. James Frazier, Asst. Chief Kim Holley, and Inv. Jamie Lowrance assisting. Members from both the McNairy County Sheriff’s Office and the Selmer Police Department assisted in the case. Almudhala faced similar charges in 2012 following a November 2011 raid at his station. In 2012, Almudhala, owner of the Selmer Citgo, settled those charges after paying a $500 fine and court costs for violating Tennessee Code Annotated 39-17-438, which prohibits the manufacture, production, distribution or possession of synthetic cannabinoids (marijuana), according to Staff Photo by Christen Coulon the McNairy County Court Clerk’s office at Officers seize alleged synthetic cannabinoids in a November 2011 raid at the Selmer that time.
