Bethel Springs PD: Is this the end?

A ROYAL HOMECOMING

By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

JERRY ‘THE KING’ LAWLER

After surviving a one-month abolishment of its force and multiple rounds of suspensions in 2012, a State of Tennessee administrative policy could finally spell the end for the Bethel Springs Police Department. On June 24, Bethel once again found itself without a police force. According to documents from the Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission, a June 14 request by the Bethel Springs Board of Aldermen for an eligibility waiver for Benny Jennings for the dis-

charge under honorable conditions (general discharge) he received from the military in 1974,was denied on June 24. The town was also notified that their only other officer, Police Chief T. E. “Pee Wee” Sowell, apparently lost his grandfathered status allowing him to serve without certification when he was terminated in November 2012. Sowell was grand-fathered in prior to 1970, releasing him from the requirement that he attend the police academy. This requirement did not exist when Sowell first became an officer in the 1960s.

Historic church seeks to save monuments By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer

The Bethel Springs Presbyterian Church is the oldest established church in McNairy County and is one of three sites on the National Register of Historic Places of the National Park Service (The other two in the county are the Big Hill Pond Fortification and the Wray’s Bluff Fortification in Pocahontas). The church was founded on Sept. 7, 1828 by some of the earliest settlers in the county, some of whom came when the area was in Indian country. The original building sat on what today is the cemetery and served as a field hospital in the Civil War, according to church Treasurer Gail McCullar. The original building was located about 30 yards from the present one, which was built around 1995, according to church elder Sammy Henry. Damaging winds and falling trees from the Jan. 30 storm did not seriously damage the church, but it did down some of the monuments in the cemetery. Some of them are broken and cannot be repaired. The church needs your help in restoring these historical memorials, thereby respecting those buried there. Some of the monuments are marble and are deteriorating. If this continues, it will become impossible to read them. Many in McNairy and surrounding counties have ancestors buried there. Names on the markers include Wilson, Ammons, Hendrix, Swaim, Etheridge, Stovall, Lockman, Rhodes, McRimmon, Pigott, Scarborough, Sanders, Lee, Rowsey, Kerr, Rankin, McCullar, McCollough, Gillespie, Dismukes, Archer, Hill, Tedford, Cobb, Simmons and many others. “A lot of people in the county don’t real-

There are some people that have the same last names as those buried in the cemetery that have lived here all their lives,” McCullar said. Gail’s family has been attending the church for five generations and her husband David McCullar’s family has been attending the church for seven generations. David’s ancestors were charter members of the church, according to Henry. Gail’s great-grandfather was an elder of the church from 1865 until his death in 1930.

Some of the markers have birth dates before the Revolutionary War. For example, Robert Rankin’s marker says he was born on March 29, 1759 and died on Dec. 21, 1840. Some veterans of that war are buried there, Henry said. “Help us preserve this great heritage for generations to come,” said a statement from the church. The church does not get any funding from outside sources. “We’re just trying to preserve the history there,” Gail said.
