Thrown into the fire Former writer recounts coverage of high-profile stories By Jeff Whitten Head News Writer
“May you live in interesting times” is a Chinese curse and an apt description of Russell Ingle’s years at the Independent Appeal. During his tenure from the mid 2000’s until 2010, he covered three of the most high-profile stories that have ever come out of this county. As the staff news writer, photographer and graphic designer for the Independent, Ingle covered the Mary Winkler trial, the Cars for Kids tragedy and the Tommy Riley scandal. In the first part of my interview with Ingle, he talked about covering storms, contentious

If you get a text message purporting to be from Regions Bank asking for personal information, do not respond and notify the sheriff’s department. Several people with 610 and other local prefixes have gotten such messages over the past few days and a couple of people who responded to them have lost money, according to McNairy County Sheriff Guy Buck. “These messages are in no way from Regions,” Buck said. The messages are coming from scammers with an auto dialing program that are dialing all 610 numbers and possibly others. The texts typically say that the recipient’s ATM card has been deactivated and ask for personal
information in order to reactivate the card. The texts appear to come from 731 area code numbers, but these numbers could be spoofed. “This is not a new scam. It’s not unique to us. Other counties and states have also been hit,” Buck said. The investigation is ongoing and the Secret Service, which has jurisdiction over this type of crime, has been notified but have not yet responded. If you get a text like this, do not delete it. Call the sheriff’s department at 645-1004 or 645-1005. Be very suspicious of and do not respond to any text, email or phone call that asks for personal information. Legitimate banks or other businesses will not ask for this information by text, phone or email.
