Dump truck wreck claims 1

Joseph Jones, 44, of Jackson, Tenn., lost his life following an accident in Adamsville last Wednesday. According to Trooper Samuel Bryant of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, who investigated the accident, the Tennessee Department of Transportation 2006 Mack dump truck, which Jones was driving west on W. Main Street, crossed into the eastbound lanes, left the road, went down an embankment, and struck a tree.

McNairy County Medical Examiner, Dr. James King ordered an autopsy to be conducted on Jones to determine his cause of death.

The cause of the accident is also under investigation.

Oct. 7 is the last day to register to vote in this election. All registered voters who live in Selmer and those who own real estate in the city limits and are registered voters where they reside are eligible to vote in the election.

The schedule for early voting will be released by the Election Commission about a month before the election.

Director of Schools Charlie Miskelly announced at last Thursday’s meeting of the McNairy County Board of Education that he will resign on Dec. 31.

“I don’t know how you say thank you,” said Miskelly.

Miskelly has served as director 13 and one-half years. Because of teachers, parents, and principals, he said we have had good schools during that period.

“Thank you for your help, encouragement and support,” he said.

“On behalf of the board and everyone else I’m sure,” said Frank Lacey, school board chairman, “I appreciate the years you have given us, the wisdom you have brought to us and the just understanding and just decision making you made throughout the past 13 and one-half years.”

Lacey said a meeting would be called to start the process of finding a new director.

Assistant Director of Schools Dr. Brian Jackson told the board that the school district had received a $59,000 supplemental Race to the Top grant. In exchange, the school

system agreed to two conditions.

One is that Level I teachers will be observed and evaluated. Level I is the lowest level based on evaluations and test scores. A Level I teacher’s composite evaluation would be a one, the lowest score, meaning the teacher’s students’ growth in test scores are not where they should be explained Jackson.

The state considers Level I and Level II teachers to be performing below expectations.

Teachers will be observed by two individuals. One will be an administrator from their school and the other will be from within the district.

The second condition is to electronically administer the state Common Core writing assessment in third through eleventh grade in February.

Jackson said that the grant would be most meaningful for student improvement in Bethel Springs and Adamsville elementary schools.

4th annual Habitat for Humanity Celebrity Waiter Dinner Selmer accident injures one

Habitat for Humanity held their 4th Annual Celebrity Waiter Dinner last Saturday at the Selmer Community Center. Elvis, Uncle Sam, and even the Duck Dynasty crew were serving salads, dinner, and deserts.

“Our waiters did an excellent job,” said Secretary/Treasurer, Judy Mashburn. “As it has been said many times before, our community supports Habitat McNairy. Celebrity Waiter Dinner, along with the Taste of McNairy, are the major fundraisers that helps us raise the roof for a local family in need of decent housing.”

Twenty-nine tables were decorated with a multitude of varying themes to accommodate the 245 guests served. Top prizes went to Steve and Pam Simon’s construction theme for the Most Original Table, Ted and JoRica Moore’s rock & roll theme for the Most Tips Raised Table, and tied for the People’s Choice was Donny and Dian Gibbs’ Duck Dynasty theme and Joe and Karen Schicke’s ER theme.

An accident at the intersection of Highways 45 and 64 in Selmer last Monday left one man injured. The afternoon accident occurred when an 18-wheeler sideswiped a pickup in the busy intersection. The driver information was not available as of press time. This accident is still under investigation.

New industry comes to Adamsville: 20-30 new jobs

Adamsville Mayor David Leckner announced that Sparks Custom Fabrication will be moving to Adamsville at the City Commission meeting last Monday.

The commission voted to award Sparks a $10,000 relocation grant in order to move some equipment into the old Harwood Building. The move is expected to bring 20 to 30 jobs with it with a substantial opportunity for growth, according to Leckner. The company has already moved some equipment into the building.

Sparks specializes in stone, metal and refrigeration products used in the food industry. It is moving from its current location in Savannah, Tenn.

The city will be reimbursed by the Adamsville/McNairy County Industrial Development Board as soon as appointments to that body are approved by the County Commission at its September meeting, Leckner assured the commission.

The vote to approve was 4-1, with only Vice Mayor Matt Wood voting no. Leckner, along with commissioners Frank Lacey, Mark Massey and Tommy Morris voted in the affirmative.

Wood argued that the IDB rather than the city

should be doing this.

“Can we do it the right way?” Wood said.

Leckner replied that time was of the essence and this was the only way that the deal could be done.

“This moved so fast I couldn’t run the normal channels,” Leckner said.

“We definitely need the jobs. This is what we negotiated to get them here,” Lacey said.

In other news from the meeting, a bid by American Utility Contractors, of Humboldt, Tenn. was accepted to install the new water meters and gas transponders. American Utility will install 1,767 transponders for $19 each and 3,417 water meters for $31 each at a total cost of $139,500. Morris was the only commissioner voting against accepting the bid.

He said his opposition was based on the disparity between American Utility and the next highest bid. SDT Contractors, of Gates, Tenn. bid $344,625 on the entire job.

The commission voted to lease two new police cars for three years for $55,000 from Golden Circle Ford.

The commission also rejected all bids to sell the city a utility trencher with a backhoe and plow and decided to rebid for a larger machine.

There was one bid submitted to sell the larger trencher, but it was over budget.

The “peg-legged politician” who defeated Davy Crockett

Kevin McCann spoke to the McNairy County Historical Society’s July 30 meeting about two lawyers who practiced law at Purdy and other West Tennessee courts and who also were involved in politics.

Both represented West Tennessee in the U.S. Congress. After one was defeated by the other, he went to Texas and died at the Alamo. Over a century later, in the 1950s, there was a television series about him. This spawned a fad of teen-age boys running around wearing coonskin caps.

You have probably guessed by now that one of the lawyer/ politicians McCann spoke about was Davy Crockett. Except for those of you who are experts in West Tennessee history or who have read McCann’s book, The Peg Leg Politician: Adam Huntsman of Tennessee, you would probably have never guessed who the other one was if I had not just told you his name.

McCann said he believed that if Huntsman had not defeated Crockett in 1835, Crockett would never have left Tennessee for Texas, never have died at the Alamo and never have become a cultural icon.

Huntsman served ten years in the state senate, two in Congress, and was a delegate to the 1834 state constitutional convention. He was a leader of the Democratic party in Tennessee in the 1830s and 1840s.

Huntsman was described as a “rough and tumble lawyer who was clever and skilled at writing letters to the papers, which were full of biting sarcasm and ridicule.”

McCann described Huntsman as a colorful and eccentric personality with a wonderful sense of humor. Like Abraham Lincoln, Huntsman was wellread despite his frontier education. He was called the peg leg politician because of his wooden leg.

“I suppose miracles will never cease in the land. To suppose that such a possum-looking fellow as you were 25 years ago would ever have been nominated President of the United States would then have been deemed Quixotism, but so it is and we must make the best we can of it,” Huntsman wrote James K. Polk.

Huntsman said that the peg

leg forced him to practice law to make a living.

“I could not work, to beg I was ashamed, and I could not steal,” Huntsman said.

Huntsman once told a man that his leg had been bitten off.

Davy Crockett and other sources say it was lost in an Indian fight.

Huntsman was one of the first attorneys to practice law in Madison County in 1821. He was the first state senator from west of the Tennesse River in 1827.

He sided with Andrew Jackson’s Democratic Party, but he followed his own principles when they conflicted with his party. For instance, he opposed resolutions by his Jacksonian colleagues in the state senate that condemned Pres. John Quincy Adams for what the Jacksonians called the corrupt bargain. Adams had finished second behind Andrew Jackson in the 1824 presidential race. Henry Clay, who finished fourth, threw his support behind Adams, who was elected by the House of Representatives.

Adams then appointed Clay Secretary of State. Huntsman, though a Jackson supporter, thought the resolutions were undignified and relied on mere presumptive evidence. He said that his oath required him to be satisfied as to the truth of every proposition before he assented to it.

“Imagine a lawmaker today making that sort of statement,” McCann said.

Huntsman crossed Old Hickory a couple of other times. One involved a proposal to create a state bank.

Jackson went to the state capital, which was then in Murfreesboro and accused the legislators of committing a perjury against the people of Tennessee if they passed such a “corrupt, base, wicked and unconstitutional law.”

Huntsman thought Jackson’s tirade was a “direct and unwarranted attack on the dignity of the senate.”

Nevertheless, Huntsman supported Jackson presidential campaigns in 1828 and 1832, but objected to Jackson’s choice of Martin van Buren, the Fox of Kinderhook, to be his successor.

Many other Tennessee Democrats agreed with Huntsman and supported fellow Tennessean Sen. Hugh Lawson White. This split led to two-party politics in the state.

Huntsman eventually became a van Buren supporter and campaigned for him in his unsuccessful 1840 reelection campaign.

Huntsman’s best known political achievement was defeating Davy Crockett. They were a lot alike in some ways. They were born about six months apart.

Both had been Indian fighters, and each were storytellers. One newspaper compared them to Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Both were polar opposites when it came to their political philosophies. Crockett was obsessively opposed to Jackson and van Buren, though he began his career as a Jackson supporter. He supported a tariff, federal funding for internal improvements and rechartering the Second Bank of the United States.

Jacksonians turned against Crockett over a bill he proposed to give settlers clear title to land they occupied. They did everything they could to defeat Crocket in the subsequent 1831 election.

Huntsman was a states’ rights man, but was against nullification.

“For the first time in his political career, the famed bear hunter knew what it was like to be the prey,” McCann said.

Huntsman sarcastically took out a newspaper ad seeking the whereabouts of the wayward congressman who had left the Jacksonian fold.

Crockett dismissed Huntsman for writing chronicles and “like foolish stuff.” Crockett defeated William Fitzgerald in that election.

Crockett was not so lucky in his race against Huntsman four years later. Huntsman served a single term in Congress from 1835 to 1837. Huntsman faced the prospect of defeat by John Wesley Crockett, Davy’s oldest son, and chose not to run for reelection.

Huntsman resumed his law practice and continued to participate in Democratic politics. He died in 1849 at the age of 63.

McCann argued that if Huntsman had not defeated Crockett, he would have been in Washington, D.C. rather than at the Battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.

Crockett left Tennessee because he felt his political career was over here and sought to revive it in Texas, McCann said.

Selmer looks to save $120,000

If you have occasion to appear in Selmer City Court, your costs are going up. The Selmer Board of Aldermen voted at its Aug. 13 meeting to increase court costs from the current $75 to $80. It will become law upon passage on second reading and the mayor’s signature.

The board also discussed which health plans it would adopt for employees. It directed City Attorney Terry Abernathy to find possible consultants.

The board voted at its July meeting to extend the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee plan purchased through Richie Bodiford on a temporary basis in order to pass a budget and keep employees covered.

Alderman Chris Tull said that he asked that a plan from Insurance Program Managers Group be discussed at the working session on Aug. 12, but three of the aldermen then left. He asked again at the regular meeting that the plan be considered.

Mayor David Robinson said that under current budget the plan would save the city about $120,000 and reduce each employee’s deductible from $2,000 to $1,250.

“If you want some good advice, talk to somebody who doesn’t have anything to sell,” Abernathy said.

Abernathy also said he expected

he could find someone to evaluate the plans at a reasonable hourly rate who would not take a lot of time to do the job.

The board approved three grant applications by Fire Chief Anthony Carr. One is a Tennessee Municipal League grant for driver safety with a $3,000 match. A second one is a nomatch grant from Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response to hire a part-time firefighter. Finally, Carr will also be applying for an Assistance to Firefighters Grant which requires an $8,000 match.

The board passed five ordinances on second reading. One would amend the budget to add $8,900 for debt service on a capital outlay note and $97,000 for expenditure on a capital outlay note for police vehicles.

Another ordinance rezoned a five-acre tract at Glover Drive and Tennessee Avenue from industrial to low density.

The board also passed the 2009 International Mechanical Code, the 2009 International Plumbing Code, and the 2012 International Gas Code. These actions were required by the state said Mayor David Robinson. The city would have to pass these codes or turn all building inspections over to the state.

In response to a question from Vice-Mayor Paul Simpson, Ashe said the adoption of the codes would not cause gas bills to increase.

Guys to get two new firetrucks

During last Monday’s meeting the mayor and board of aldermen passed two resolutions regarding the 2012 CDBG Disaster Grant totaling $516,545.

Two resolutions were passed: one for the purchase of a pumper truck rewarded to the lowest responsive bidder EVS Midsouth, Inc. for $235,096 and the second resolution for $219,485 for the purchase of a 2,000 gallon tanker also awarded to the lowest bidder EVS Midsouth, Inc. The resolution passed a total of $454,581 in accepted financial assistance.

The board will meet at 10 a.m. Sept. 10 with representatives from Southwest Development District and EVS Midsouth, Inc. to review the proposed bid packet.

Mary Simmons, city recorder, announced her immediate resignation due to health problems. Simmons served the city for 8 years as city recorder.

“I have enjoyed working with everyone,” said Simmons. “We appreciate all that you did for us Mary,” said Mayor Keith Rinehart.

The mayor announced that Godwin & Associates will complete the annual audit for the city. In addition, the city received a bill totaling $6,800 for the paving over culverts and the repair of Guys Creek Bridge.

The board also noted the work of Eddie Sides and his assistance in the clean up of Race Track Road.

Fire Chief Perry Strickland reported the department attending one car fire, assisting Michie regarding a brush fire and two first responder calls.

“We put a new switch on the truck so that was done,” said Strickland.

The board discussed the potential purchase of a tractor and bush hog and will be gathering bids from several businesses with state approved bid packets and state surplus.

“We can call and talk to state approved bidders to discuss some options,” said Rinehart.

Alderman Wayne Henry noted that the community center was leased Wednesday. The room is a 40 x 80 foot room and will accommodate approximately 150 people. The city leases the space for $75 with a $100 deposit fee.

Sides asked Davis to step out of the car but he put the car in drive and drove off. Sides and Ptl. Tommy Howell then gave chase. Davis turned right out of the parking lot on E. Poplar, went to Maple St., and turned left. Davis went to the end of Maple St. then turned right on Purdy Rd. where he continued until he reached Oak Grove. Davis turned to the right and went back to E. Poplar Ave. Sides passed Davis and with Howell behind him, the two officers got the car stopped. They ordered Davis out of the car and arrested him.

Sides and Howell patted Davis down and found a large amount of cash in his front pocket. Sides

placed Davis in the back of his patrol car. Sides transported him to the McNairy County Justice Center for booking.

Sgt. Ted Roberts of SPD stayed with the car until a K9 unit from the sheriff’s department arrived.

Deputy Dustin Jaco, Roberts, and K9 Hank searched the car. A large amount of money was found in the trunk. Roberts and Jaco found a green, leafy substance in the floorboard and on the driver’s side door panel. A container in the cup holder contained marijuana stems and a plastic baggie.

The money was counted at SPD and totaled around $2,600.

Davis was charged with evading arrest, reckless driving, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a Schedule VI drug. He was released on $10,000 bond and will appear in court Oct. 17 to face the charges.

South McNairy County hit with rash of burglaries

The southern part of the county has been hit with five burglaries over the past week Deputies were called to a Lilly Taylor Road residence after the homeowner returned to find her home had been ransacked by burglars.

According to the McNairy County Sheriff’s Department incident report Amanda Steward called deputies when she found that her mobile home and storage shed had been burglarized.

Steward reported that the crime took place between Aug. 2-5. She discovered the crime after returning from Memphis where she is in the process of moving. She reported seeing three people whom she knows, who did not have permission to be there, on the property previously and suggested that those individuals may have something to do with the theft.

Deputy Christoper Williams said that the criminals used a blunt object to open the door to the home and he listed a 33-gallon Craftsman Air Compressor and two Blue Tick Pit Bulls among the missing items.

The thieves also knocked a propane heater off the wall during the burglary.

Steward also reported that the criminals poured what appeared to be oil over clothes in the storage building and also stole a 36-inch television from that location.

Then last Friday a trailer was stolen from Guys Chewalla Road in Ramer. The owner told Deputy Daniel Fuller that it was a 5’ by 10’ pull behind, it had a metal bottom with plywood on the top of the floor.

A trailer was reported stolen from Hill Crest Road in Guys last Saturday. The owner told Williams the last time she saw the 5’ x 8’ single axle trailer was a week earlier. She also told him that she saw a white Chevrolet pick up during the week it was stolen parked beside the end of the road at the end of the drive.

Another trailer was reported missing on Stanfield Lane in Ramer last Monday. The owner told Deputy Jason Gray that he left his house around 11 a.m. and returned about 2 p.m. to find the 5’ x 8’ trailer missing. The trailer has stainless steel sideboards, white spoke wheels, a wire mesh bottom and did not have a tailgate.

A lawn mower was reported stolen from Hurley School House Road in Ramer last Monday. The owner told Deputy Danny Pinson that the John Deere riding lawn mower was sitting in her car port, which is connected to her residence. She told the deputy that the last time she saw the mower was at 10 p.m. the previous night. She didn’t notice any tracks around the car port.

Haslam pushes ‘Drive to 55’ initiative: Will 55% of Tennessee get degree by 2025?

The state is driving to 55. However, the 55 it is driving to is not measured in mph, but in percentage of college graduates.

The administration of Gov. Bill Haslam has set as a goal that 55 percent of the people in Tennessee have at least a two-year college degree by 2025. Currently, only 32 percent of the population in the state has a college degree. There are more than 800,000 Tennesseans who have completed some college, but have no degree.

They seek to achieve this goal in two ways. The first is through need-based grants. Haslam has signed legislation to establish an endowment through the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation of at least $35 million for such grants. These grants are designed for community college students and would go directly to the institutions.

“This is a way to address the cost of post-secondary education, which can be a barrier to many students and their families. We need to make it affordable for students to further their education,” Haslam said.

A second part of this initiative is the online Western Governors University Tennessee. WGU Tennessee was set up with a one-time $5 million appropriation from the state and a $750,000 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. This funding

will make WGU Tennessee self-sustaining.

“Many Tennesseans have received some amount of college education but had to leave school for one reason or another. Many would like to go back and finish their course work, but some of the same situations that forced them to leave college may still exist. Or they might find going back to college difficult for different reasons now,” Haslam explained.

WGU uses a competency rather than a time-based model. Instead of earning credits based on time spent in class, students earn them by demonstrating competency in a subject matter by writing papers, completing assignments and passing tests. Students are guided by faculty mentors. This allows them to schedule school around work and family obligations. Tuition is about $6,000 per year for most programs.

WGU students will be eligible for Tennessee’s financial aid program, except for HOPE scholarships funded by the state’s lottery.

The university offers accredited bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business, K-12 education, information technology and health professions, including nursing.

Enrollment begins this fall.

The University of Tennessee could have set up a similar program but it would have taken more time and cost more money.

The state spends $6,500 per student plus what they pay for tuition.

Arts in McNairy announces new series: “LIVE! at the Latta” Arts in McNairy Submitted Article

Arts in McNairy is pleased to announce a new concert series called “LIVE! at The Latta” for the 2013-14 season.

AiM is well-known in West Tennessee for its great theater series and concerts that started in 2001.

Auditions for AiM’s newest show “The Legend of Sleepy Hallow” are just around the corner on Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. and Sept.

8 at 1 p.m. The show will take the stage Oct. 17-20 for a very timely performance of this Washington Irving classic.

“The ‘LIVE! at the Latta’ series is an addition to the line-up of great theatrical performances AiM patrons have enjoyed for years,” Paige Holmes, AiM Managing Director explained, “A great deal of thoughtful planning went into this series that features artists who reflect local heritage, something different, and high artistic quality.”

This year, the AiM performance calendar will offer nine shows. The “LIVE! at the Latta” series will be ‘turning up the beat’ exploring different rhythms through percussion and acoustics,” explained Holmes. The concert series will include four locally known and internationally known artist groups.

AiM will present the first concert Oct. 26 with the Memphis group “South Side Supper Club.”

The band describes itself as an eclectic acoustic trio featuring Patrick Bolton on clarinet, Shane Morrell on banjo, and Jason Davenport on accordion. The group performs a wide variety of music from country and bluegrass to soul and rock ‘n roll, and originals along with classic French, Italian, and Russian styles.

South Side Supper Club has been heating up the Memphis scene with rave

reviews including being nominated for Best Memphis Band by the Memphis Flyer. In honor of their name, AiM will be presenting this as a dinner/concert event.

“We are bidding out the catering with local chefs and eateries to make this a unique entertainment evening at a reasonable price of $25.00 per person,” said Holmes.

AiM is grateful to have received the Rural Arts Performing Grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission to help pay for the artist fees and marketing associated with a full concert series.

“AiM could have not realized the dream of a series like “LIVE! at the Latta” without this grant,” said Holmes.

“LIVE! at the Latta’s” next two concerts scheduled in 2014 include encore performances from the University of Tennessee at Martin Percussion Ensemble and our now annual AiM Music Homecoming Concert.

The homecoming concert will gather the artists associated with the Stanton Littlejohn recordings project that will be finished and available for purchase soon.

“We are so excited that we will be able to release the first digital recordings of the Littlejohn catalog along with a documentary on McNairy County roots and early rockabilly music recorded by Littlejohn and still played by local artists today,” said Dr. Shawn Pitts, AiM Heritage and Culture Chair.

This documentary and the music recording will also archived at the Library of Congress in its American Folklife Center in Washington, D.C. The finale concert in August 2014 will feature the Caixa Trio, a Latin-flavored, all-female percussion ensemble based in Tennessee.

“We have been working two years to

get Dr. Julie Hill and her group on a McNairy County Stage...It will be worth the wait,” Pitts said.

This ensemble will complement McNairy County’s late summer heat with an energetic show.

“Our Performing Arts theater season will be one of the best ever as we bring back the popular February dinner theater and the perennial musical favorite, ‘Annie,’” said Holmes.

The new full season ticket package will include two dinner events, nine great shows and a $10 discount for $105.

“We are very excited about being able to offer all this performance at such an economical price point. Patrons can also choose season tickets just for the theater productions or just the ‘LIVE! at the Latta’ series,” Holmes said. “Both individual series ticket packages offer a $5 saving over buying tickets at the door. Student rate season ticket packages will be available as well.”

Additionally, AiM received a scholarship from the arts non-profit, South Arts, to attend its Performing Artist Exchange conference in Nashville this September.

Holmes she was very excited about going to meet artists from all over the world who are looking to perform in venues like the Latta. Having a quality concert series will make McNairy County an arts destination and increase tourism dollars.

Six reasons to become tax volunteer

If you’re looking for a way to help your community, then consider becoming a tax volunteer. The IRS is looking for volunteers now who will provide free tax help next year.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly are community-based programs. They provide free tax return preparation for people who need tax help but can’t afford it. People with low-to-moderate incomes, seniors, people with disabilities, and those with limited English skills usually qualify for this free service.

Here are six good reasons why you should become a VITA or TCE volunteer.

1. No previous experience is required. Volunteers receive specialized training and have the option of serving in a variety of roles. If you’re fluent in a language other than English, you can help those who do not speak English.

2. The IRS provides free tax law training and materials that allow volunteers to prepare basic individual income tax returns. Volunteers learn many aspects of tax return preparation. This includes tax deductions and credits that benefit eligible taxpayers, like the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly.

3. The hours are flexible. Volunteers generally serve an average of three to five hours per week. Volunteer programs are open from mid-January through the tax filing deadline, which will be April 15, 2014.

4. Volunteer sites are located in communities throughout the nation. You’ll find them in neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. VITA and TCE sites offer free electronic filing for both federal and state tax returns.

5. Veteran and non-veteran volunteers may be able to help military personnel and their families.

6. As a volunteer, you become part of a program that has helped people file tax returns at no charge for more than four decades. With VITA and TCE, you do make a difference. It’s people helping people. It’s that simple.

Bethel Springs Beer Board issues permit, avoids lawsuit Staff Report IA Staff

After months of wrangling over whether or not to issue local businessman Gary Bizzell Sr. a permit to sell beer at a planned convenience store located next to Bethel Springs Town Hall, the town’s beer board, composed of the Bethel mayor and aldermen, finally granted the permit last Thursday.

Mayor Kay Cox and aldermen John Wood and Gary Bizzell Jr. voted yes and Alderman Sherry Smith voted no on the measure. Alderman Shirley Williams was not present to register a vote at last Thursday’s meeting.

The license initially passed on its first reading, however, the license failed to pass on several pervious attempts due to a needed rewrite of the town’s beer permit law, a lack of a quorum, and most recently due to a lack of a second at the board’s Aug. 12 meeting.

Bizzell’s son, Alderman Gary Bizzell Jr., had previously excused himself from the meetings in which his father’s permit was up for consideration. But Bizzell Jr. did vote in last Thursday’s meeting following a ruling from the Municipal Technical Advisory Service in Knoxville which

stated that he could participate in the legislation since he had no financial interest in the business.

In the previous meetings of the Bethel Springs Beer Board, the board re-passed their beer ordinance at its Aug. 6 meeting. This was done on the advice of the Municipal Technical Advisory Service which advised the town the ordinance had become confusing because amendments had not been properly incorporated in the text. The substance of the ordinance is the same as the previous one but was simply rewritten, according to City Clerk Deborah Sullivan.

The ordinance prohibits selling beer within 100 feet of a school or church when it would interfere with either establishment’s business, when it would cause traffic congestion, or would otherwise interfere with the public health, safety, or morals.

The ordinance prohibits the sale of beer from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and from 12 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Sunday.

A quorum, or a majority of the board, must be present and a majority of board members who are present must approve any action. Any member present but not voting will be deemed a no vote.

Selmer Utility Director, Ashe injured in crash

The board was unable to vote on the second reading of an application for a beer permit by Bizzell, Sr. due to lack of a voting quorum. Only three members of the board were present Cox, Wood and, Bizzell, Jr. At the Aug. 12 beer board meeting, Bizzell Sr., threatened a lawsuit against the town and the individual beer board members as his application for a beer license died for lack of a second on its final reading.

Mayor Cox pleaded with the beer board members to approve the measure which she said the town was legally obligated to pass unless they could show reason not to approve it.

In that meeting, Woods motioned to pass the license on its final reading, however, neither Sherry Smith nor Shirley Williams seconded the measure preventing it from coming to a vote. Cox as mayor cannot second a measure and Bizzell Jr. had recused himself from the vote due to his relationship with the applicant.

Bizzell Sr. said that he invested $100,000 in a new store that he planned to open next to the town’s hall after the first reading of his application when it became apparent that the town had no legal ability to deny his application on its second reading.

Selmer Utility Director Richard Ashe was injured in an automobile accident in Jackson last Sunday.

According to Selmer Mayor David Robinson, Ashe is doing okay, except he has a fractured sixth and seventh vertebrae, a black eye, a cut on his forehead and is in general banged up. Ashe was released from the hospital last Sunday. He will need to recuperate several days at home.

Robinson said that Ashe was exiting Interstate 40 in Jackson, Tenn., on the way back from Nashville, when another car cut him off, traffic slowed or stopped, cars in front hit their brakes and a six-car pile up ensued.

This year’s calendar theme is McNairy County People And Their Transportation. Giesler: I knew then that I wanted to be a teacher

Family ties have played a key role in her life in education from the beginning and continues today after almost a halfcentury spent as a teacher/administrator.

Carolyn Giesler followed in her father’s footsteps to become a school teacher and was eventually promoted to principal at Selmer Elementary School where she served for 25 years. Giesler is now an assistant principal at Michie School where her niece Kayce Howard is a kindergarten teacher.

“I would go to in-service meetings with my dad (Burnette North) as a little girl and I knew then that I wanted to be a teacher one day,” said Giesler. “I never thought about being a principal but I enjoyed my years at Selmer Elementary as the principal.”

Her career as a teacher began at SES where she taught for one year before moving to Rosedale, Miss. for two years. She then returned to SES where she taught for 20 years before being promoted to principal by then McNairy County Superintendent of Schools Estel Mills.

She retired as a principal after the 2011-2012 school year but a family pull helped convince her to return to Michie where she works three days a week as assistant principal under new principal Wayne Henry.

Howard being a part of the Michie faculty played a role in Giesler staying in education on a part-time basis. Giesler does not have children and Howard has always been like a

daughter to her.

“Kayce and I have a special bond,” said Giesler. “I remember when she came to tell me that she wanted to go to school to become a teacher. I enjoy seeing her and her children (Taylor & B.J. Howard) at school.”

Giesler also played a role in helping her step-daughter, Jennifer Stills, on her career path to becoming a teacher.

Stills now teaches in Springfield, Mo. There is no doubt that Giesler touched many people throughout her many years as an educator. She continues to utilize her talents as an administrator to help students and teachers at Michie School.

“I really enjoyed working with Suzanne (Henson) last year,” commented Giesler.

“Suzanne (now retired) did a great job leading as principal.”

The family connections are important to Giesler and she pointed out how she likes being able to lead grandchildren of parents that she has taught or had in school while she was principal.

“I always loved seeing children learn and it was great when you would see the light come on for them,” said Giesler. “It excited me when I saw they understood what I was trying to teach them.”

When Giesler is not at school, she spends time with her mother Loraine North who lives at the McNairy County Healthcare Center.

While reflecting back on her almost 50 years in public education as a teacher and administrator, Giesler said that she would not change anything at all during that time.

Expectant mothers were treated to an Extraordinary Baby Shower last Friday in the lobby area of the McNairy Regional Hospital in Selmer.

The event was sponsored by the McNairy County Health Department along with MRH and provided the future mothers with education and support as well as offering a variety of useful items from nearly a dozen local medical, support, and educational organizations.

The event, which is in its third year, drew more than 50 expectant mothers from the region and was the most successful event to date.

“This event was put together to introduce (local doctors) and to educate young mothers on some of the things that we may not have time to cover during a doctor’s visit,” said Dr. Keith Perkins of Medical Associates of Selmer. “You need to know what lies ahead, especially when you are bringing home your first baby. There are a lot of things that I didn’t know, being a pediatrician, until

I had a baby. You are never going to know everything.”

Perkins said that he was surprised and very pleased with the turn out for the event and he praised the local health department for their work in putting the event together.

“It was a good event,” said Kylie Simer a 22-year-old expecting mother from Hardeman County who made the drive over for the shower. “I learned a lot, and I think that is very important especially when you are young.”

Simer encouraged other new mothers to attend future events such as these and said that they help to prepare mothers for what to expect when the new baby arrives.

Along with Perkins, there were three other guest speakers giving away helpful information to the expectant mothers at the event including Dr. James Clark of the Woman’s Place who spoke on early prenatal care, Dale Reynolds, a lactation consultant, Margaret Alexander who talked about naming the baby and filling out birth certificates.

Bethel man loses nearly half his body weight

After more than a year of hard work, positive thinking and some help from above, a 22-year-old Bethel Springs man now stands192 pounds lighter.

Joshua Shipman said that he lost nearly half of his total weight during the 14-month period and he did so using a simple formula: prayer, walking and lots of water.

“God has been my main help,” Shipman said. “I started out walking one mile then eventually got up to five or six miles per day. Sometimes I walked to the next county, Chester County.”

Shipman decided to lose the weight after he said God showed him a vision of his future.

He said that after that he knew that if he did not lose the weight he would end up in a coffin. In addition, he said that he also watched

the Dr. Oz television program which talked a lot about health effects from diabetes and offered solutions for weight loss.

“God definitely got my attention,” Shipman said. “I feel like a new person. I feel a lot better and can move around more.”

Shipman says that he would like to help others who are trying to lose weight as much as he can.

In the future, Shipman said that he hopes to be helping people while continuing to stay in shape.

He also plans to attend college to become a counselor and Christian motivational speaker.

“It is my goal and dream to teach other people, no matter how hard life gets, just set a goal and keep reaching for it and it will come to pass,” Shipman said.

Shipman wanted to share an important Bible verse he was reminded of while on his weight loss journey: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” - Philippians 4:13

Local woman prepares for national pagent

For the second year in a row, McNairy Central graduate Sarah Ford took the Tennessee state title in her division of the National American Miss competition.

Ford currently holds the National American Miss Tennessee crown replacing the crown of National American Miss Tennessee Teen which she held the previous year.

Ford spent the summer as visiting royalty at several state pageants in Kentucky, Georgia and North Carolina.

She said that she was able to work with several different age groups and really enjoyed working with some of the younger girls.

“That was really fun because you can tell that they look up to you,” Ford said. “I’ve done the (Tennessee) pageant for eight years and when I used to walk through the hallways and would see the Tennessee Queens and would say, ‘Oh my gosh.’”

She said that she enjoyed reliving that same scenario from the point of view of the Queen.

Ford is now focused on her community service campaigns and national competition in Anaheim, Calif., this Fall.

Ten percent of her score at the national competition is based on her community service. Ford is currently planning several events to raise money, items and support for Soles for Souls, a Nashville based charity.

“I am doing a plate lunch, a 5K race and a shoe drive,” Ford said. “It’s going to be superhuge and it will all be based here in McNairy County.”

The plate lunch will be Sept. 13 with the 5K to follow on Oct. 5,” Ford said.

Soles for Souls started following Hurricane Katrina to give shoes to those displaced by the storm.

She said when she started working to support SfS she had set a goal to collect 100 shoes but was able to collect 400. To date Ford has collected more than 1,400 pairs since she began.

Ford is attending Union University in Jackson, Tenn., as a junior and plans to graduate with a degree in Psychology and Family Studies.

Ford gave a word of advice to girls just beginning in pageants recounting how she worked for years without winning a single title: “Never give up, persistence is definitely the key. Be determined, go for what you want, and have fun. Once it stops being fun, it’s time to stop.”

The Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Corinth, Miss. will celebrate its 50th Anniversary this Sunday. The church, which is the only one of its denomination for more than 40 miles, draws nearly a third of its members from McNairy County.

The history of Prince of Peace began before the establishment of the church.

Husband and wife, Charles and Bea Dalton, saw there was no established Lutheran church in the area. They took it upon themselves to place an ad in the Daily Corinthian to determine if there were any people interested in forming a congregation.

Reba Bauer cut out the ad and put it in her purse before spending several months traveling on family business.

Upon her return to Corinth in 1963, she found the ad, called Dalton, and thus began the development of the church.

The few members enquired with the Southern District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod to develop a pastoral ministry for the church. For a short period, several pastors from the local area came to the church to bring communion and preach the word to the members. Soon the church was established and Reverend George Miller conducted the first worship service on Aug. 19, 1963.

The first church services began in the home of Albert and Lorraine Baushcke and were held two days a month, the first and third Sunday.

On Sept. 15, 1963, the congregation began to meet in the evenings at the Episcopal church when the Lord’s Supper was given to the members. On Oct.4, 1963 the first congregational meeting was held and the Southern District of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod received this new congregation.

The congregation named the church Trinity. Soon the district requested a name change to avoid confusion with a sister church in Tupelo which had the same name of Trinity and the name was changed to Prince of Peace.

The congregation moved to the Robertson Clinic. Many times when it rained, the roof leaked and water covered the floor. During services, people had to play musical chairs to move whenever a new leak developed. There was neither heat

nor air conditioning. Generally, a congregation prays for visitors and potentially new members. On the hot, cold, or rainy days, the opposite happened; they prayed no one would come to see how unbearable the conditions were in the building.

The first years saw many challenges for the new congregation, but in 1966, a large blessing occurred. The Coleman property on Shiloh Road in Corinth was purchased. At the time, it is estimated that six to ten families were members and the purchase was a giant step of faith. All agreed that putting the church on a major road like Shiloh was worth the cost.

Much work had to be done on the early building, then an old house. It needed a lot of repair but the work brought the people together improving the look and feel of the new church. That year Thanksgiving and Christmas worship services were held in the new building. Today, this first church building still stands as the parsonage behind the new church.

Eventually, the old house became too small to hold all the new members and visitors. Several people began the quest for a new building. On May 5, 1987, Prince of Peace members determined the course for a new building, a nearly 12year project which culminated with the congregation holding the first service in the new building in January 1999.

Since those early days, the church continues to meet in this building. No material changes have occurred since the original construction. However, a few cosmetic changes to the exterior property happened.

Over the years, there were many obstacles to overcome with the church losing many members during the economic downturn as they moved to find better jobs. However, God continued to bless the church. It struggled economically, losing a full time pastor. A series of part-time interim pastors serving only on Sunday and the strong desire and leadership of the church allowed it to continue its ministry. In spite of an interesting beginning and places to worship, the congregation maintains deep faith in its ministry and mission. All members strive for continued growth in the mission of sharing the word of Christ to all nations. This is the mission Jesus commanded the church in Matthew 28, to go and make disciples and baptize them in His name. Join us in carrying out this mission.

Local Veteran named president of 9th Inf. Div. Association

A veteran who lives in the Gravel Hill Community was recently elected president of the prestigious ninth Infantry Division Association for a 2-year term beginning 21 July 2013.

Paul W.J. Schumacher who lives at 2226 Gravel hill Rd, served as a combat infantryman in the 9th Infantry Division in Europe in WW II. Paul was elected president of the Association during the 68th Annual Reunion which met recently in Charleston, South Carolina.

The Ninth Infantry Division Association Association began forming in mid-1945 shortly after hostilities ended in Germany. By joining the Association while serving in Europe, Paul became an early member of the Association.

Any individual who wore the Octofoil insignia from 7 December 1941 to 7 May 1945, and any Vietnam era veteran who wore the Octofoil insignia and served honorably in the 9th Infantry Division from August 1964 to 7 May 1975 is eligible for membership in the Ninth Infantry Division Association.

Any widow, spouse or descendant of these veterans is also eligible to become a member of the Association.

Your eyes and your cell phone We have recently had several items removed from the alley behind the thrift store in Selmer and also from the back porch at the office. We have lost many bags of clothing, including four TV’s and a freezer, to thievery.

We experienced this before and with Selmer Police Chief Neil Burks and his staff’s help it subsided but the ugly head of the thief has come back.

We work together as a community for the good of those in need. If you are in need, call the office and we will help you, but if you steal we will prosecute you!

Nelson Moore was born February 12, 1953 in Corinth, MS, the son of Rebecca Sue White and the late J. R. (Bully) Moore.

He was united in marriage to Marilyn Hite on December 31, 2009.

Mr. Moore was a member of the first graduating class from McNairy Central High School in 1970. He was employed for 38 years with Packaging Corporation of America in Counce, Tenn., retiring in July of 2013 as a Crew Leader and Paper Machine Operator. Mr. Moore was a member of International Paper Local 992, having formerly served as Vice-President, and was a faithful member of Good Hope Baptist Church. He enjoyed working in his yard, and loved his family and life with a passion that touched everyone he knew.

Mr. Moore departed this life on August 15, 2013 in Corinth, Mississippi at the age of 60 years, 6 months, 3 days. He is survived by his wife Marilyn (Hite) Moore of Michie, Tenn.; a son, Steven Moore and wife Jennifer of Medina, Tenn.; a daughter, Scarlett Gattis and husband Brian of Tishomingo, MS; a step-son, Josh Hite and wife Christie of Rienzi, MS; a step-daughter, Stacy Cook and husband Kevin of Clarksville, TN; eight grandchildren: Ella, Addison, London, Mahlon, Paytlin, Patience, Pierson, and Alex; his mother, Rebecca Moore of Michie, Tenn.; his step-father, Oma (Pee-Wee) Edmondson of Michie, Tenn.; two sisters, Debi Bertalotto and husband Kevin of Oakdale, CA and Belinda Henson and husband Jeff of Purdy, Tenn.; several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Services were held on August 17, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer, Tennessee, with Roy Bennett, Steven Moore, Josh Hite, and Danny Paul White officiating. Burial followed in the Pebble Hill Cemetery at Michie, Tennessee. Pallbearers were Jeff Henson, Kevin Bertalotto, Danny Paul White, Alex Hite, Adam Henson, Joshua Henson, Buddy Moore, and Brian Gattis. Mr. Moore’s PCA Counce Mill family served as honorary pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or LeBonheur Children’s Hospital.

Ripley, MS - Janet Kay Leatherwood Brock, 59, died Thursday, August 15, 2013 at her residence in Ripley. She was born September 22, 1953 to Cassie Nell Cummings Leatherwood and the late I.H. Leatherwood. She was a member of New Bethel Presbyterian Church in Selmer and attended Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Ripley.

She was a factory worker.

Services were held at 4 p.m., Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Terry Vuncannon officiating. Burial was in Shiloh Cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, A.W.”Arlin” Brock of Ripley; two daughters, Angela Bridges (Justin) and Tammy Moffitt, both of Ripley; two sons, Anthony Brock (Robbie) and Michael Brock (fiance’ Tonya Phipps) both of Ripley; her mother, Cassie Nell Leatherwood of Ripley; seventeen grandchildren, Chelsea, Brittany and Tyler Brock, Cody and Jeremy Moffitt, Carliee Alsup, Madison, Emma, and Haley Sanders, Weston, Jackson, and Avriee Brock, Ally and Ella Bridges, all of Ripley, Brianna Brock and Audrie Lumpkin, both of Phoenix, AZ. and Skylar Alsup of Moro, AR; and one brother, Anthony Quinn Leatherwood (Debbie) of Ripley.

Pallbearers will be Scotty Moore, Thomas Moffitt, Ryan Jeter, John Sanders, Ronnie Brock and Jerry Brock. Honorary Pallbearers will be Justin Bridges, Cody Moffitt, Jeremy Moffitt and Blake Leatherwood.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Visitation was from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel.

Richard Wayne “Dutch” Hegenheiser passed from this life on Sunday, July 28, 2013, surrounded by his loved ones. Richard, born December 29, 1935, was a son, a brother, a husband, a father, and a proud veteran of the United States Army. He served valiantly in the Korean Conflict.

He was proud to be a one of a kind man, stubbornly but honorably, marching to the beat of his own drum. After his discharge from the U.S. Army, he worked for 35 years as a printing press operator for Schering Plough. He married Kay Vires in 1963. Though they legally parted ways in 1987, their love and friendship grew until the day of his passing. They were soul mates and best friends.

He was a long time resident of the Berclair area of Memphis, living in the same house on Westover Avenue since 1966. He was proud of his home and all the small things it contained. He was a collector of unwanted items, often working tirelessly to refurbish items others had tossed away. He cherished the small things. He was proud to be a simple man.

Richard was the father of two daughters, Kimberly Newana Hegenheiser Williams, of Selmer, Tennessee and Samantha Kay Hegenheiser-Finley, of Memphis, Tennessee. Richard also leaves behind one brother, Armin Paul Hegenheiser, also of Memphis, Tennessee, 6 grandchildren (Amira “Britteny” Hegenheiser, Brenon Harris, Blake Harris, Larry Wallace, Hanna Wallace, and Austin Williams), 3.7 greatgrandchildren (Daniel Hegenheiser, Israel Hegenheiser, Cohen Harris, and, soon-to-be-born, Brielle Harris), and two very tall son in laws, Derek Finley and Keith Williams. He also leaves behind one very special ex-sister in law, Freda Locke.

He was preceded in death by his father, Armin Paul Hegenheiser and his mother, Jessie Evelyn Curtis Hegenheiser.

Richard Wayne Hegenheiser was a character like no other. His presence on this Earth will be sorely missed. However, the essence of this eccentric, proud man will carry on through all who loved him.

He was a content man, no matter what the day brought him. I will live each day feeding off the strength of my courageous man. - Kay

Tressie Fortune Tressie (Stormy) Fortune was born September 17, 1923 in the Woodville Community of Chester County, Tenn., the daughter of the late James R. and Rosie Arlie Hodge Cox. She was united in marriage to Austin Kennie Fortune on February 7, 1944. Mr. Fortune preceded her in death on December 18, 2007. Their 63 years of marriage was a true love story.

Mr. Fortune was sent to defend his country during World War II and served in Europe for eighteen months. Mrs. Fortune received in the mail a purple heart, for three weeks she didn’t know whether her love was wounded or killed. By the time she found out he was alive, he was already back in combat. Their legacy to their family is one of love, dedication, admiration, and respect for each other.

Mrs. Fortune worked and accomplished many things: earned her nickname “Stormy” playing basketball during high school, was a B17 Riveter during WWII and worked at Oak Ridge during the war, earned her college degree in education at the age of 59, worked at Sears for 13 years, and traveled with her husband around the world with the military and in their retirement years. She was a member of the Longview Baptist Church in Olive Branch, Mississippi.

In the words of her grandchildren, “She was a loving, strong and kindhearted wife, mother and MeeMee. If it had not been for these two loving, caring, giving, selfless angels adopting two little orphaned boys so long ago, none of us would be here to have the blessed lives that we do today.” She was the MeeMee who would sit up with you and talk all night, always ready for an adventure, and had a young-free spirit. She never met a person that she didn’t love.

Mrs. Fortune departed this life on August 15, 2013 in Cordova, Tennessee at the age of 89 years, 10 months, 29 days. She is survived by a son, Buddy Kennie Fortune and wife Linda of Olive Branch, MS; three grandchildren, Trevor James Fortune and wife Amy, Shane Fortune, Natalie Fortune; great grandson, Arthur James Fortune; a sister, Patricia Cox Whitman of Selmer, Tenn.; two brothers, Claudie Cox of Selmer, Tenn., Chester Cox of Bethel Springs, Tenn.; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Fortune was preceded in death by a son, James Austin Fortune; a grandson, Stephen Wayne Fortune; two sisters, Marilyn Patterson and Susanna Cox Greer; three brothers, James Jerald Cox, Robert Shelby Cox, Erwin Moisen Cox. Services were held on August 18, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer, Tennessee, with Jetta Forsythe officiating. Burial followed in the Lake Hill Memorial Gardens at Bethel Springs, Tennessee.

Flora L. Strickland Flora L. Strickland was born December 19, 1950 in Alcorn County, MS, the daughter of the late Allen and Minnie Strickland Horne.

Ms. Strickland was a loving mother, grandmother, and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren was very precious to her. She had a caring and compassionate heart for others, often going to nursing homes to visit with the elderly or visiting with people in their homes. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, cooking for her loved ones, and had traveled the world with Donnie Sr while they were in the military.

She was a member of the Christian Assembly of God in Corinth, Mississippi and was ready to meet her Heavenly Father.

Ms. Strickland departed this life on August 18, 2013 in Tupelo, Mississippi at the age of 62 years, 7 months, 30 days. She is survived by the father of her children and friend, Donnie Strickland, Sr. of Culleoka, Tenn.; two sons, Donnie Strickland Jr. and wife Jessica of Ramer, Tenn., Allen Strickland of Michie, Tenn.; special daughter, Lorraine Strickland of Culleoka, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Ariana Strickland of Michie, Tenn., Warren Strickland of Michie, Tenn., Hailee Gibbs of Michie, Tenn., Agnus Leigh Strickland of Tupelo, MS; waiting the arrival of great grand daughter, Emilee Strickland; four sisters, Faye Davis and husband Erbie of Corinth, MS, Betty Mills and husband Clay of Corinth, MS, Linda Smith and husband Jon of Corinth, MS, Gail Jones and husband Danny of Corinth, MS; cousin, Jeanette Kennedy of Corinth, MS; host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Strickland was preceded in death by three siblings.

Services will be held on August 21, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Christian Assembly of God in Corinth, Mississippi, with Daniel Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Farmington Cemetery at Corinth, Mississippi.

Donna Ann Britton departed this life on August 13, 2013 in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 70 years, 3 months, 11 days. She was born May 2, 1943 in McNairy County, Tenn. the daughter of the late Wallace M. and Jewell Faye Davis Britton.

She was employed in different jobs in the service industry during her lifetime.

Donna was a good mother and grandmother and loved her family very much. She will be missed by all.

She is survived by two daughters, Penny Clark of Oakland, TN, Carrie Cowles of Cordova, Tenn.; three sons, Allen King of Ecru, MS, Lynn King of Memphis, Tenn., Darrell King of Dallas, TX; 6 Grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren; five sisters, Meredith Powers, Nancy Tweed, Joy Clark, Joan Bradford, Jeannie King; three brothers, Jerry Britton, Wally Britton, Jimmy Britton. A host of extended family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Donna was preceded in death by a brother, Tim Britton, and a sister who died at birth, Mary Hope Britton.

Memorial Services were held on August 16, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Directors in Selmer, Tennessee, with Bro. Jetta Forsythe officiating.

Maidie D. Mills Maidie D. Mills was born May 8, 1919 in Michie, Tenn., the daughter of the late Frank and Mattie Lou Wade Dickerson.

She was united in marriage to Heard Hill Mills in 1939.

Mr. Mills preceded her in death on March 17, 1986. She graduated from Michie High School where she played basketball after graduation she was a substitute teacher. After moving to Memphis, she was a secretary for the City of Memphis in the public works department. She was a member of the Sycamore View Church of Christ in Memphis, Tennessee.

Mrs. Mills took great pride and pleasure in caring for her family. She was an excellent cook and liked working in her flowers.

Mrs. Mills departed this life on August 16, 2013 in Memphis, Tennessee at the age of 94 years, 3 months, 8 days. She is survived by two sons, Ronnie Mills and wife Connie of Memphis, Tenn., Howard Mills and wife Odelia of Memphis, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Monica Escobar, Deborah Sides and husband Raymond, Frank Mills, Madeline Mills; seven great grandchildren, Amanda Escobar, Nicholas Browning, Madison Sides, Cameron Carson, Kelsey Rose Mills, Nathan Mills, Gabriel Greer; host of extended family and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Mills was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Raymond W. Sides Jr.; two sisters, Aline Hindman, Loraine Jordan; a brother, Wade Dickerson.

Services were held on August 19, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Liberty Church of Christ in Michie, Tennessee, with Malcom George officiating. Burial followed in the Liberty Cemetery at Michie, Tennessee.

The family of Lucille McCormack would like to thank our family and friends for all the phone calls, visits, and loving concern during her 4 years at McNairy County Health Care Center.

Chasity Sain celebrated her birthday this month with a gift given by her parents Willie and Tamela Sain. The gift was a shopping trip and sleepover at the Ramada Inn in Jackson, Tenn. Her sister, Erica and daughter, Jayla from Lavernge, and Kandace Martin from Murfreesboro joined them. They all had a good time.

Theresa Horton entered the Regional Hospital in Jackson on Friday.

She is slowly improving.

Our prayers are with her for a speedy recovery.

James Harlan is in the Jackson General Hospital

where he had surgery last week and is doing much better. He is hoping to enter rehabilitation unit to continue on the road to recovery. Please pray for him.

Tony Martin from New York came down on Wednesday to visit Wheaty Martin and George Hurst. He left on Saturday. Nancy Hurst and husband from Memphis visited on Thursday.

They celebrated their twenty-fifth anniversary.

They all got together on Saturday for a small family reunion. Everyone had a good time.

If there is a staff member in our home who cares for everyone and is looked up to, it is Deborah Norwood. Deborah is the staffing coordinator and wears many hats in a days time.

She teaches the Nursing Assistant classes and has a great success at passing rate for her students. All of the CNAs look to Debra as a mother figure. For me, she is a friend whose office is next to mine. So on those days when I have to fuss about something it is to Debra I go. She is also the one who tries to make sure I eat something on those many days I think I am just too busy to go to lunch. She knows me very well though, even if I don't eat she knows my passion is diet Coke and she makes sure I have one.

Debra is good friends with, is George Burkeens. George has come to be a favorite to many of the staff. He has a quick smile and can make you laugh just by talking to him. He and his sister, Eva, were both patients at one time but Eva has gotten well and returned to her home. They have a very close brother sister friendship. Even though Eva has returned home she comes almost every day to visit her baby brother as she calls him, George.

Jamboree ends in victory for both schools

Last Friday night the Adamsville Cardinals and the McNairy Central Bobcats made the short trip to Henderson, Tenn., to compete in the seventh annual STAR physical therapy football jamboree.

The jamboree has a different format than the regular season which makes games shorter and faster. Instead of the normal 12 minute quarters, the teams only played two 10 minute halves with the clock not stopping.

The Bobcats were the first team on the field, getting ready to take on the Lions from Scotts Hill.

Going up against their former coach, Micheal Stroup, the Cats got off to a quick start and scored on the first play of the game when Jerrett Mood broke free and headed into the end zone.

After the first drive the Bobcats settled into their offense and let the running game be their strong point.

With Mood, Darwin Kelly and Isaac Cagle all making solid runs and timely plays the Bobcats were able to come away with the preseason win.

McNairy will be off this week and will use that time to get ready for the home and season opener against Kossuth High School.

In the second match-up of the night, the Cardinals took the field to face off against the Humbolt Vikings.

The Cardinals started the game off on defense and gave up a big play early, allowing the quarterback to get loose and head his way into the end zone.

Adamsville wasted little time getting the points back. On the following possession the Cards marched down the field and ended the drive with a Zak Neary touchdown and tied the game 6-6.

After the first drive the Cardinals defense settled in and began to exert their will against the Viking’s offense.

Lady Bobcat looks to set an example on and off the field

If you see Kelly Beth Ernest on a normal day, you would not picture her as a competitive athlete that excels in two sports at McNairy Central.

Her name Kelly Beth is used almost as though it is one word, “Kellybeth,” and some may not know her last name.

The beauty queen look disguises a gritty competitor that drives Kelly Beth to perform well whether she is on the softball field or golf course.

While softball is her first love in sports, Kelly Beth leaves no doubt how important God is in her life and she hopes to convey that message to everyone.

She has four favorite Bible verses written on her glove to help calm her when she is upset in the pitching circle.

Her verses on the glove are Phil. 4:13, Phil. 4:9. Joshua 1:9 and Deut. 31:6.

“If I get mad at myself while pitching, then I will look at the verses on my glove and remember them to calm me down,” said Kelly Beth.

The junior pitching standout for the Lady Bobcats remembers meeting Tennessee pitchers Ivy and Ellen Renfroe and saw how seriously they took being a good Christian example.

“I do not want people to just think of me as a softball player because I would much rather them remember me as a Christian,” she said. “When you really think about life, softball does not matter. I hope softball is a tool for me to use to help others want

to become a Christian.”

She has lived with her grandparents Johnny and Brenda McIntyre since she was three years old and they have raised her in a Christian home. Kelly Beth became a Christian at 11 years old and now attends Fourth Street Church of Christ.

Johnny has been a big influence on her softball career as well pushing her to reach her potential as a player.

“Papaw would get out to pitch with her in the yard and sometimes I would get upset and want to quit, but he would not let me stop,” she recalled. “He is a big reason I have reached a higher level in softball.”

Kelly Beth has a special coachplayer relationship with MCHS softball coach Mel Surratt, who has been her softball coach since Kelly Beth was in the sixth grade.

“Coach Mel means a great deal to me as a coach and friend,” said Kelly Beth. “She has been there for me when I have needed her on and off the field.”

A poignant moment for the two comes every Mother’s Day when Kelly Beth sends a text to her coach wishing her a ‘Happy Mother’s Day!’ “Coach Mel does not have any children and she treats all of us like we are her children,” she commented.

“It (the text) means a lot coming from Kelly Beth,” said Coach Surratt.

“She is a very thoughtful young person.”

When you look for a good role model among young people, Kelly Beth is a name to remember.

Haslam awards Parks and Recreation Grants Selmer will see slice of the $1.6 million dollar pie

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Environment and Conservation Commissioner Bob Martineau awarded $1,694,000 in Recreational Trails Program grants to recipients across Tennessee last Thursday. This included a slice of the pie designated for improvements right here in McNairy County.

This included a $52,000 grant awarded to McNairy County and the City of Selmer.

The funds are designated to widen the walking trail that surrounds the Selmer City Park and Selmer Middle School soccer field.

“We are very excited about the grant, this is the second time we applied, and we finally got it,” said Selmer Mayor David Robinson. “We have been applying for every grant that we can, and I am just excited to see the walking trail expanded.”

Sybil Dancer, director of Selmer Parks and Recreation, thanked both the Selmer and McNairy County mayors and legislative bodies for their work in securing the grant.

“I was very excited when I heard we received this grant,” Dancer said. “This grant means a lot to me because (the walking trail) is used by so many people in our community.

Dancer said that the grant will be an 80/20 match with 20 percent of the monies coming from local funds. The Tennessee Environment and Conservation Commissioner Robert J. Martineau, Jr. will be coming to the area in the future to present the check for the grant.

“I can’t wait to get started,” Dancer said.

The Recreational Trails Program is a federally-funded program established to distribute funding for diverse recreation trail projects. The funds are available to federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as non-profit organizations that have obtained IRS 501(c)(3) status and have a written trail management agreement with the agency that owns the property where the trail project is located.

“These grants assist local governments and organizations in improving community amenities such as trails, greenways, and recreational facilities, making the outdoors more accessible to Tennesseans.” Haslam said. “The health and wellness of our residents is a top priority and these amenities provide another step to make our state healthier.”

Recreational Trails Program grants may be used for non-routine maintenance and restoration of existing trails, development and rehabilitation, trailside or trailhead facilities such as restrooms, kiosks and parking lots, construction of new trails, and land acquisition for recreational trails or corridors.

“These awards will help fund some outstanding projects, including the development of new greenways and trails and more ADA-compliant facilities,” Martineau said. “We are excited to be in a position to make a variety of recreational opportunities a reality for these communities.”

Funding for RTP grants is provided by the Federal Highway Administration through the federal Safe, Accountable, Flexible and Efficient Transportation Equity

Act. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation administers this grant program for the state. The maximum federal share for each project is 80 percent with RTP grant recipients providing a 20 percent match.

Grant recipients were selected through a scoring process with careful consideration given to the projects that met the selection criteria and expressed the greatest local recreation need.

Gridirons host 2013 Meet the Bobcats

Pizza and spirit was the name of the game last Thursday night as the MCHS Gridiron Association hosted Meet the Bobcats in the MCHS Commons.

“We’ve got a good team this year. We’ve really been working hard this summer,” said Lorenzo Clark, a sophomore defensive back, as members of the community milled through the sea of football players and cheerleaders.

Wayne Mitchell, president of the association, welcomed the guests inviting them into the Little Theater after the meal for a presentation of the 2013 Bobcat football players and cheerleaders.

The association is excited about the upcoming season said Mitchell as players, cheerleaders, and guests served themselves pizza. He said the association is hoping to make the football games “more entertaining” this year through raffles and other fan-oriented competitions performed during halftime much like what is done at college football games.

In the Little Theater, Judge Van McMahan opened the presentation and addressed the crowd saying it’s a misconception that the Bobcat football team doesn’t have what it takes and won’t win.

“That’s a load of crap,” he said as the cheerleaders led the crowd in applause. Then, addressing the players he said, “This community cares about you. You’re playing for each other, your family, and this community.”

Coach Charlie Dampeer said the team is preparing themselves mentally and physically. When a player knows the other guy on his team is “doing his best,” said Dampeer, then that makes him play harder, too. He concluded that nothing happens by mistake but “you have to make it happen.”

“It’s going to happen,” a woman yelled from among the applause and cheers of the crowd.

The cheerleaders performed the “Rocky Top” routine and were introduced by the cheer coach, Mallory Cox, before the football players finally introduced themselves beginning with the freshmen and ending with the seniors.

As the final applause died down and Mitchell stood to close the event a player asked to address the crowd. Dustin Cleveland, a senior who plays center position, appealed to the audience that the most help fans could give the team this season is to “just believe” in it.

Volleycats drop season opener to Tigers

The McNairy Central Volleycats started their season with a loss last week to the Tigers from Lexington, Tenn.

The Volleycats started their season with some new faces on the court, to go along with the veteran upper classmen to take on their district rival Tigers.

The Cats got off to a good start in the first match and stayed point for point with the Tigers in the early going.

After a while though, the Cats began to get worn down from the Tigers strong offense.

McNairy played strong defense led by Brianna Bodiford, Kaitlyn West and Addison King, but it was not enough. The Cats played hard but fell in the first set 25-11.

After switching sides the Volleycats got on a roll scoring early and often, coming together offensively and making some great defensive plays. However the Tigers were too strong with their attack and successfully slowed the Cats down before taking the lead themselves.

McNairy had the effort but the relentless attack from the Tigers was too much and the Cats fell in the second set 25-8.

Trying to avoid going down in three straight sets, the Volleycats changed sides once again and went to work.

Starting off strong once again the Cats made every effort to slow the Tigers down, but could not.

McNairy got out to an early lead but could not hold on.

The relentless offense from the Tigers was just too much and the Cats fell in the third set 25-5, losing their first match-up of the season.

The Volleycats will be at home for their next matchup against another group of Tigers, this time from Hardin County.

Adamsville got the ball back early in the next drive, after recovering a fumble near the 50 yard line. The Cardinals once again wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.

This time the points came through the air as quarterback Seth Paul hooked up with receiver Jacob Wallis for the long touchdown.

Although those would be the last offensive points the Cards would score, they still found a way to add to their lead. Late in second abbreviated half it was Neary who again found the end zone, this time from the defensive side of the ball after making the interception against the Viking’s offense.

The Cardinals got a good look at somethings and an idea about how the season will be going, but did not show too much. Adamsville will also be starting their season at home Friday night against the Chester County Eagles of Henderson , Tenn.

The Eagles were the Cardinals only regular season loss last year and the Redbirds have revenge on their mind as they make another bid at a state title.

Michie School’s 2013 Carolyn Gooch Scholar-Athlete Award belongs to Jarrett Mask, son of Johnny and Kim Mask and Aysia Campbell, daughter of Tim and Sheryl Campbell. Michie School’s most prestigious award was established in March 1986 in honor of Carolyn Gooch, a nationally acclaimed biologist with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Among Miss Gooch’s many accomplishments, experiences and travels, she recalls her work at the Cape with Neal Armstrong as one of the many highlights of her career. Miss Gooch was valedictorian of the 1953 Michie High School graduating class, a basketball standout, and a native of the Michie Community.
