Fire consumes Bethel Springs buildings

Firefighters from Selmer Fire Department, the Bethel Springs, McNairy County, Finger and McNairy volunteer fire departments battled a blaze in the old grocery store building and an abandoned building behind it last Friday between Front and Main Streets in Bethel Springs.

The fire started in the building behind the grocery store and spread to it, burning the back of it.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to County Fire Chief Darrell Goodrum.

Emergency Medical Responders hosted McNairy County Emergency Awareness Day last Saturday at Selmer City Park, and the day was made an official county holiday.

“In every corner of our county, emergency practitioners are hard at work and delivering hope to McNairy County residencies in dire circumstances,” said McNairy County Mayor Ronnie Brooks as he proclaimed the special event. “I encourage all citizens to take this day for sharing their support.”

The proclamation made the first Saturday in September officially McNairy County Emergency Awareness Day. Each year, emergency equipment is purchased through the fundraiser, and several different groups and teams participate.

This year’s event included Air Evac Lifeteam, Tennessee National Guard, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Drug Awareness Resistance Education, several local fire departments and many more.

Firefighter Derick Sutherland of the Finger Volunteer Fire Department awarded Barry Hodge with the Jimmy Dickey Memorial Hometown Hero of the Year Award which was presented to his mother, Nancy. She proudly accepted the award in tears.

However, this portion of the investigation is centered in Hardeman County.

Officials familiar with the case told the IA that they believe Ervin committed suicide after drinking Methyl Parathion, more commonly referred to as cotton poison, on Saturday morning at his home in Toone, Tenn.

While media reports suggest that the two had been estranged for at least a year, officials familiar with the case said that Weeks’ may have known that Ervin would be at the concert last Friday.

Ervin’s most recent publicly available Facebook post dated November 2012 was an auto post from a popular online game “Bamboozled,” which read, “Dale Ervin won five games against Nancy Knight Weeks.”

tremely heavy damage to Lemilliere’s vehicle and attracted the attention of Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Kennie Lamberth who was nearby.

Lamberth said that he witnessed Lemilliere fleeing the scene at more than 60 miles per hour as he crossed the railroad tracks in Selmer heading through downtown.

“I could see him fighting with the airbags in his car as he was driving,” Lamberth said.

Lamberth pursued the vehicle as it turned onto side streets in downtown Selmer before Lemilliere lost control of his vehicle, which hit a curb near the courthouse and came to a stop where he was arrested by the trooper.

Patrolman Tony Westbrooks said that Lemilliere faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident from the Selmer PD and that the state would pursue additional charges.

Lamberth said the suspect faces charges of driving on a revoked license, and DUI (second) and evading arrest. Lemilliere was taken to McNairy Regional Hospital for both blood and urine testing prior to being booked in the McNairy County Jail.

Marbar’s vehicle sustained non-disabling damage to its rear-end, and he declined to be transported from the scene by ambulance.

Davidson told the IA that Weeks is believed to have left the concert independently of Ervin before driving her own car to the area near the murder site, however, it is unknown exactly why or how the two ended up on the desolate stretch of highway or what may have drove Ervin to murder.

“At this point it appears to be a murdersuicide,” Davidson said. “We are still trying to get everything to the lab to make sure that is what happened.”

The McNairy County Sheriffs Office asked in a Facebook posting following the murder for respect of the Weeks family at this time and said that their prayers are with them.

“This is a tragedy for both of the families,” Davidson said. “We want to make sure based on the evidence that this is what happened.”

Guys pastor to walk across the country to raise awareness of cause

Pastor Walter “Chick” McGill of the Guys Creation Seventh Day Adventist Church is planning to walk across the country next year.

McGill has been tracing the route in a pace car for the past eight months and is currently taking a short break in Selmer. Living in the pace car has given him first hand experience in what the homeless face daily.

“As I have stayed in shelters and eaten in the soup kitchens, I can empathize with how these precious souls are treated, and it is often not pretty” McGill said.

In a few weeks McGill will resume his trek to Kill Devil Hills, N.C., where the grueling eight-month walk will begin in March. Kill Devil Hills is near Kitty Hawk, where the Wright Brothers first flew an airplane.

The walk will end nearly 3,000 miles away in Santa Monica, Calif.

McGill and the other walkers will follow U. S. 64 to New Mexico and then historic Route 66 to the Pacific coast. Route 66 is also known as the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America or the Mother Road. Being established in the 1920s, it is one of the oldest and most famous highways in the country.

The purpose of the walk, according to its Facebook page, is to promote “a new birth of freedom and integrity, restoring self-respect, family values, liberty of conscience, and victorious living while observing the universal principles of God’s laws of physical, mental and spiritual health.”

The motto of the walk is “Let your light shine...by

Walking the Walk.”

McGill has been encouraged by the reception he has received so far.

“The going has been very encouraging. As I meet with people on the streets, city officials, members of the various Chambers of Commerce, pastors, etc., there is great enthusiasm with responses like, “This is what we need!”

I think they really key on “Walking what you talk.” Everyone seems to agree that America has been heading in a wrong direction, and it is time for a change for the better. I have hopes that church people along the route will join me to walk across their respective towns. From what has been planned in the Tulsa, OK area, we should have a large event there. I am hoping for the same in Chattanooga and Memphis in Tennessee,” McGill said.

McGill is a charter member of the CSDA Church and went to jail last year for violating a court order obtained by the national SDA Conference prohibiting the use of Seventh Day Adventist and other terms. McGill and his congregation believe the order violates their Freedom of Religion.

McGill, who will be 68 at the outset of the walk, has served as project director of humanitarian health services in Uganda, which is in east Africa.

At present, nine other people have committed to join McGill for at least part of walk.

Because of his age, McGill was hesitant to take on this project at first.

“When God first approached me about this project, I turned it down flatly with the excuse that I am too old for such a daunting undertaking. God would not leave me alone, waking me three nights in a row to reason with

me. On the third night, I submitted to the divine call. My resolve was this -- I survived assaults from gangsters in the San Bernardino County jail in 2012, so I trust God to make me strong where I am weak. This is not about me anyway, but about ‘a new birth of freedom and integrity’ in America. I can do this by God’s grace,” McGill said.

Since McGill does not have financial sponsorship, his wife will be driving the pace car, and they will be living out or it and camping along the route. He hopes to be able to afford a cheap motel one day a week. He will rest on Fridays, preparing for worship on Saturdays, which is the Sabbath for Seventh Day Adventists.

The shoe company TEVA has donated two pair of high-quality walking shoes.

“My feet need the best treatment possible, and I really appreciate this donation,” McGill said.

McGill will need only four or six more pairs to complete the walk.

The trademark lawsuit by the Seventh Day Adventist National Conference is not over. The 30-day jail sentence McGill served in 2012 was a civil sanction to coerce him into complying with the plaintiff church’s demands and the federal court order.

“It is very possible that the Plaintiff church could subpoena me back into court and interrupt the walk because I have not complied with their demands, and I will be gathering hard-copy signatures for the Liberty Petition along the walk (see: www.LibertyPetition.com). I can be incarcerated again, since I have not complied, i. e., taken down our Guys church sign and websites, or paid any of the $107,000 awarded to the Plaintiff church for attorney fees,” McGill said.

More than 135 local Pickwick Parrot Heads raise money for the Darryl Worley Cancer Center. County looks to curtail adult entertainment

Candidates prepare for Selmer Mayoral Debate

The McNairy County Commission gave the beer board the authority last Monday to create an Adult Entertainment Committee after commissioners brought up concerns over a euphemistically questionable sign on Race Path Road and the county’s ability to fully regulate or prohibit an adult business if opened under the county’s current ordinance.

County Mayor Ronnie Brooks said that they would have to look at the ordinance and put it in front of the beer board to come up with a committee to create codes which would regulate the location of such a business.

In other news from the meeting, the budget commission said it would meet with various county offices in October to review the overall county budget for the current fiscal quarter.

The commission also passed a highway commission motion to declare four pieces of aging equipment as surplus.

During the meeting, Mayor Brooks recognized Jim Rickman for his 27.8 years of service to the county.

On a final note, the commission voted on the Adamsville Industrial Board Nominees; Tommy Ross, Steve Tidwell, Lee Winters, Luke Delavergne, Lee Swearington, Fred Dierks and Jimmie Ann Burks were all voted in by the board.

The 2013 Selmer Mayoral campaign is heating up with four candidates vying for the city’s top seat in the November 5 election.

On Sept. 26, the candidates will come together to greet potential voters and answer questions at The Independent Appeal Selmer Mayoral Debate at the Latta Visitor’s and Cultural Center at 7 p.m. The event will be hosted by the McNairy Regional Alliance and will feature all four candidates answering questions about the future direction, current standing or any other pertinent concerns citizens may have regarding the day to day operations of the city.

This year, the mayoral field features incumbent Selmer Mayor David Robinson, Selmer Alderman John Smith, McNairy County School Board Member Tony Chapman and former Bethel Springs Alderman Roger Hill.

The event will be moderated by Independent Appeal Editor Christen Coulon, and it will be divided into two question and answer sections. In the first part of the debate, the moderator will ask general questions of the candidates with each having 2-3 minutes to respond to each question. In the second portion of the event, candidates will field general questions from audience members. During this portion of the event, our moderator will also ask preselected questions submitted from citizens who are unable to attend the debate in person.

The event will last for approximately two hours. Refreshments and light snacks will be provided to those in attendance. Seating for the event is free, however space is limited and will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Michie held its election on Sept. 4 with all candidates for mayor and aldermen running unopposed for the three open seats.

With a total of 53 votes cast, Anthony Smith was elected mayor with 21 votes, according to the McNairy County Election Commission.

Robert Dunn, with 40 votes and Jay Poindexter, with 47 votes, were elected to two aldermen positions in last week’s election.

The mayor and board of aldermen discussed various improvements to the city in last Monday’s meeting. “Have you all noticed the lights on the flag pole. I do believe we have the pole lighted better than the flag, but we put the lights where we could. One of the lenses on the lights was already shattered and we are not sure of the cause, but they replaced it,” said Mayor Dannie Kennedy. “We owe Alderman Hershel Hollin a big thank you for this,” said Kennedy.

The mayor also reported the installation of a new metal roof on the concession stand at the park at a cost of $1,200.

The board approved $2,000 for expenditures. “One of the construction guys stated he would paint and repair the concession stand and the pavilion for $300 in labor each if the city bought the supplies,” said Kennedy.

The board discussed getting more estimates but determined that the bid of $300 was reasonable if the work was good. “Do any of you know anybody who paints,” said Kennedy. “I don’t know anyone who does anything anymore. It is hard to find people to work,” said Alderman Dorothy Bridges.

Bridges made a motion to paint and repair the concession stand and pavilion and the motion passed.

The mayor told the board he has received the keys to the saddle club. “I’ve been in there, and there are all kinds of things that need to be cleaned up. We may need a clean up day,” said Kennedy.

The board discussed the possibility of hosting tractor pulls in the space. They recently loaned a water wagon to a local motor cycle rally, and they are interested in purchasing the wagon. Alderman Steve Hutton stated if they made use of the saddle club space, they would need a water wagon. The board determined to keep the wagon. “They can borrow it, I have no problem with that,” said Alderman Hershel Hollin.

The board discussed the need for a new roof and painting at the city hall. The mayor will get estimates and report next month. Alderman Tony McMurray made a motion to cut off the water at city hall that passed and asked if the city needed to purchase any new Christmas lights.

The mayor discussed the need to contact the McNairy County Highway department regarding a couple of culverts on Main Street extended and Perry Street in need of repair.

“If the county would supply the rock, we could do the work,” said Bridges. The mayor will place a call to seek help with repairs.

The board discussed the need to plan their Public Relations dinner in November. Alderman Brenda Essary and City Recorder Margie Alexander will seek bids on catering the event in the Ross Building. The board invites county leaders from all three counties they represent.

Bids on the new firetruck were not ready according to Southwest. “Everything we did has been there a long time,” said Alexander. Prior to adjournment the board discussed the fire departments fundraiser BBQ and bake sale on Sept 28 at the fire station.

A member of the National and Tennessee Federations of Music Clubs, this organization has contributed much to the development of music in our schools by means of a yearly scholarship to a deserving senior, as well as opportunities for performances by instrumental and vocal students.

In 2012, the club came under the umbrella of Arts in McNairy, desiring to assist in their artistic endeavors, while maintaining a long history of supporting all types of music.

An organizational meeting was held at the Latta on Aug. 30 to elect officers and committees, and plan for the 2013-2014 season.

I am thrilled to be back in the Adult Education classroom. Five Selmer students recently passed the GED test, and we have several more students scheduled for the next test in October.

Because the GED test will change in 2014, it is crucial for re-testers to sign up as soon as possible.

The five test sections: math, social studies, science, writing skills, and reading, may be taken separately when repeating a test if taken by December, 2013.

America not world’s police force Dear Editor, Regardless of how we feel about Assad’s use of chemical weapons on his own people, we are not the World’s Policeman. That responsibility falls to the United Nations. Have they fulfilled or will they in the future live up to that responsibility? No, and it will never happen as long as Russia and China have veto power over any important matter which comes before it. The United States should exit the United Nations, take our money, invite all right thinking nations to join us and build a better thought out organization with headquarters in The Hague or Bern or Olso or ----. then we should evict what is left of the old hangers on crowd and turn the United Nations building into housing for the homeless with little mall like shops scattered throughout for employing some of the more qualified. The short answer is that the United Nations is responsible for policing the world, not the United States. The only exception would be a direct threat to our own country.”

We feel very strongly that there should be no action taken by the United States in Syria or any other country, without the backing of the United Nations. Regardless of what some people say or think, George W. Bush had the backing of the United Nations (Resolution 1441), the United States Congress and the American people before the war in Iraq. At this moment President Obama has no backing from anyone. Thanks.

Claude Ray Earnest

Mr. Hollis Leo Meeks passed from this life at 87 years, 11 months and 17 days at 1 p.m., Friday, September 6, 2013 in Corinth, MS. Mr. Meeks was born in Tippah Co., MS on September 20, 1925 to the late Joe and Lessie Crum Meeks.

On December 28, 1946, he was united in marriage to the former Annie Mae Graham, who departed this life on December 27, 2009. He was a member of New Salem Primitive Baptist Church in Walnut, MS. He worked for the Frisco/B&N Railroad as a carman, retiring after 35 years. He loved to work in his garden, grow peanuts, fish and hunt, and “kick up his leg” at live bluegrass music performances at the square in Corinth.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 8, 2013, at Shackelford’s Middleton Chapel with Elder DeWayne Dubard and Elder Ricky Taylor officiating. Burial was at New Salem Cemetery in Walnut, MS. He had four daughters, Delores ( James) Thurmond of Middleton, Brenda (late Ray) White of Enville, Kathy (Donnie) Turner of Middleton and Carol (Terry) Berryman of Middleton; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, who he loved like a son, Burt (Carolynn) Meeks of Middleton; two sisters, Doris (Robert) Henry of Ripley, MS and Louise Mathis of Memphis; one special nephew, Kenneth Leo Henry of Southaven, MS; and special friend, John Billy Jeanes of Ripley, MS. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, G. W. Meeks; and four sisters, Geneva Null, Flossie Mauney, Flora Walker and Berdie Mae Meeks.

By his request, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the New Salem Primitive Baptist Cemetery Fund, 25830 Highway 370, Falkner, MS 38629.

Mr. Claude Ray Earnest, age 62 of Middleton, departed this life Thursday evening, September 5, 2013 at St. Francis Hospital in Bartlett.

A lifelong resident of Hardeman County, he was born in Middleton December 5, 1950 to the late Claude Morris and Pearl Mynatt Earnest. He graduated with the Class of 1968 from Middleton High School and served in the United States Army from 19691971 in Vietnam. He was united in marriage to his wife Linda, who survives, on December 23, 1983. He had retired from Thyssen-Krupp Elevators and worked as a farmer. Among his hobbies, he enjoyed time with his family, riding horses and spending time outdoors.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 8, 2013 at Shackelford’s Middleton Chapel with Frank Bell officiating. Burial was in Earnest Cemetery.

In addition to his wife of 29 years, he is survived by a sister, Sue Stephens and husband Jerry of Middleton; a brother, James Earnest and wife Bettie of Middleton; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Vester L. McAlpin Vester L McAlpin, 81, of Memphis passed away September 6,2013 after a long bout with upper respiratory cancer. He was born August 16,1932 in the Ramer community, the son of J.C. and Bertha McAlpin. He is survived by his wife, Betty June McAlpin; five children, Michael McAlpin, Teresa Dunson,Kathy McGhee, Donna Gordon, and Karen McGraw, seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and five greatgrandchildren, all of Memphis and one brother, Vernice Lee McAlpin of Bulverde, TX. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Vernal McAlpin and a sister Roberta Oliver.

He was a member of the Yokefellow Bible Class and Usher at BellvueBaptist Church in Cordova, Tenn. for over 20 years. Services were held at Northridge Woodhaven Funeral Home in Millington, Tenn. on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 11 a.m., with burial following in the Northridge Woodhaven Cemetery.

Amelia Young graduates UNA Amelia Young is a recent graduate of the University of North Alabama.

She graduated UNA Cum Laude (with honors) on May 11, 2013 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Public Communication. While at UNA Amelia was an active member of the Honors Student Organization, Lambda Pi Eta Community Honors Society, LionCam, and the UNA Bass Fishing.

She was also music chair for Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.

After graduating UNA with a 3.65 GPA, she now attends Arkansas State Univeristy where she is pursuing her Master’s of Arts in Communication Studies.

She was awarded a graduate Assistanship for Asu and now works closely with students and faculty.

She hopes to become a

FCE Summer Celebration On August 14, Stantonville Family and Community Education (FCE) Club hosted the annual McNairy County FCE Summer Celebration with an Italian theme. This event is held every year to get the three FCE clubs together for food, fun, and fellowship. Along with Stantonville the other local FCE clubs are Selmer and Leapwood.

Even though this is a fun day, the clubs always want to help others. Club members brought nonperishable items to be donated to the

local food pantry. Approximately $250 worth of items were donated.

The day started with Pam Carroll, Stantonville FCE President, welcoming everyone. After a prayer and delicious potluck lunch Extension Agent, Schancey Chapman, introduced speaker Tony Chapman.

Mr. Chapman is a local author of a southern humor book on sayings. “I’d Know His Danged Ole Hide in a Tannin’ Yard”: And Other Thangs Mommanem Useta Say is an easy to read book

with a funny story to go along with each saying. Mr. Chapman made everyone laugh with his personal stories.

After a great celebration, door prizes were given out and the 2013 County and Regional Cultural Arts winners were announced. If you would like to join FCE or have any questions, please contact McNairy County UT Extension at 731-645-3598.

Adamsville falls to Trinity Christian Neary Rushes for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns in the district loss

The Cardinals played host to Trinity Christian Academy in their first district game of 2013. Adamsville held strong but fell to the Lions late in the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals got off to strong start against the Lions, waiting less than two minutes before Zak Neary found the end zone early in the first quarter putting the Cards up 7-0.

The rest of the quarter went on to be a battle for the redbirds, as the Lions were able to make their way down the field with the help of some big plays and some untimely penalties against the Cardinals.

After the game was tied at seven, the Cardinals had a hard time getting any offense going and with the help of turnovers and penalties the Lions were able to find the end zone once again and took a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter.

Into the second quarter both defenses began to settle in and the momentum continued to swing back and forth but neither team was able to find the scoreboard.

It took no time for the Cardinals to come back out on the field and tie the game. Neary was once again able to find the end zone after and tie the game at 14.

Once the game was tied the Cardinals had all the momentum on their side and they began to dig in on defense. Fighting penalties and a strong Lion offense the Cards were able to hang on.

Once Adamsville got the ball back it did not take long for Neary to again find pay dirt and move the Cardinals ahead 21-14 late in the third quarter.

Once in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals were trying to hang on, but the penalties and mistakes were hard to overcome.

The Lions were able to find the end zone mid way through the fourth quarter and tie the game at 21.

McNairy Central battles Lexington at home

After a close game until the fourth quarter, the Bobcats lost the cat fight to the Lexington Lions last Friday at Don Whitaker stadium.

With seven minutes left in the first quarter, Kintavius Newsome rushed 25 yards and scored the first touchdown of the game for the Bobcats making the score 7-0. Only two minutes later the Lexington tied the score 7-7. With a minute left in the quarter, the Lexington made it to the end zone again but wasn’t awarded a touchdown due to a holding penalty on the offense.

Coach Charlie Dampeer said the Bobcats played better offensively. In the second and third quarters, quarterback Isaac Cagle played an exceptional game with approximately 130 yards in passes, one resulting in a touchdown. Jarrett Mood and Reggie McNeal rushed about 100 yards each.

In the second quarter, Lexington took the lead with another touchdown but no extra point making the score 7-13. After a false start on the Bobcat offense, Cagle threw a long pass to McNeal who scored the touchdown ending the second quarter 14-13.

In the third quarter, Mood received a pass from Cagle of almost 90 yards and rushed before being tackled at Lexington’s 19 yard line. The Bobcats then worked their way toward the end zone. Eventually, Cagle claimed the first down with one yard for the touchdown. With five minutes left in the third quarter Cagle gained the touchdown making the score 28-21.

With two minutes, thirty seconds on the clock, Lexington recovered a fumble eventually scoring a touchdown and earning a two-point conversion to tie the game again 28-28 going into the fourth quarter.

Lions, Rebels dominate

From across the county, the Bethel Lady Rebels and Selmer Lady Lions dominated the softball fields last Tuesday night.

The Lady Rebels competed against the Ramer Eagles at the Ramer field where they played an exceptional offensive game.

In the first inning, Rebels Emily Phillips Harmon, Brittany Nixon and Kailie Lott each hit low balls down the center of the field helping score three runs in the top of the first. Lady Rebel pitcher Katie Turner then quickly struck out the Eagles ending the first inning 3-0.

By great hits and several stolen bases, the Rebels took four more runs in the second and third innings making the score 8-0 at the top of the fourth.

The Rebels scored two more runs in the fourth and ended the game in the fifth with a final score of 10-0.

The Lady Lions were up 17-0 against the Michie Blue Devils by the fifth inning and took the win two innings early.

The Lions also beat the Adamsville Cardinals last Thursday finishing the game 10-0 by the fifth inning for another short game. The Lions earned seven runs in just the first inning and another three runs in the second, third and fourth innings.

Lion Anabelle Whitaker pitched 12 strikes and Rachel Pickens hit a triple.

Cardinal coach Todd McGee said several errors and a couple walks in the first inning really hurt the team’s chances to win.

The Adamsville Junior Cardinals made the short trip up Highway 64 to take on the Lions of Selmer Middle School. The Cardinals made a great effort but the Lions were able to come away with the win at home.

The game began as a defensive battle with neither team wanting to give ground to their in county rival.

Both teams were forced to punt in their opening possessions and the game was starting out to be a good one.

A short time into the second quarter, the scoreless tie was finally broken when Tylon Walker exploded out of the backfield and made his way 85 yards down the sideline for the long touchdown run. The two point conversion was ran in by Mickey Finnie, and the Lions were up 8-0.

Adamsville was able to put together a good drive on their next possession, but were again forced to punt the football as the Lion defense held strong.

It did not take long for the Lions’ offense got back on the board. Quarterback Chase Wallace broke free out of the back field for more than 40 yards and helped extend the Lions lead.

The two point conversion was again good by Finnie and the Lions went up 16-0.

After the touchdown, the Lions once again found themselves on the side with momentum as they were able to recover the following kickoff. Hunter McCuller was there to snag the loose ball, and Rhomerius Knight wasted little time putting it in the end zone for the Lions, who would take the 22-0 lead into halftime.

Coming out after the half the Lions received the opening kickoff, but ended up fumbling the football and giving possession to the Cardinals.

The Redbirds wasted little time taking advantage of the opportunity, and got the ball into the end zone. Collin Misenhimer is the Cardinal who found the end zone, and they began to claw their way back making the score 22-6 in the third quarter.

After the touchdown, Selmer wasted little time getting the points back as Knight once again raced to the end zone on the second play from scrimmage and extended the Lion lead 30-6.

The Cards were not able to recover from their deep deficit. They attempted to move the ball on fourth down, but the Lion defense held strong.

After the stop, Walker once again found the end zone for the Lions and extended the lead to the final score of 36-6. The Lions are now 2-0 on the season and in the county and will be hosting Ramer in their next match-up, while the Cardinals fall to 1-1 and will be traveling to Bethel for their next county show down.

Lady Cats fall to Chester County

After a canceled match two weeks ago, Chester County returned strong and the Ladycats lost the game 1-6 for their second loss of the season.

The Ladycats made one scoring attempt on the goal in the first half versus Chester County’s 14 attempts and five goals ending the first half 0-5 for Chester County.

In the second half, the Ladycats seemed to rekindle their old spark with

five attempts to score but only one goal by Rebekah Lowrie with an assist by Mackenzie Stone. Chester County also scored one goal in the second half and the game ended 1-6 with Chester County for the win.

Ramer runs past Blue Devils to remain unbeaten

The Ramer Eagles went home with the win against the Michie Blue Devils last Thursday.

Eagle Kylin Wynn quickly scored the first touchdown of the game rushing approximately 80 yards and making the score 6-0 for the first quarter. In the first quarter, Ramer also had an interception and Michie recovered a fumble.

Wynn again scored two more touchdowns in the second quarter.

Towards the end of the second, Eagle Grant McMahan made an interception. The score was 23-0 for the Eagles at halftime.

Blue Devil Josh Butler received a long pass and made a touchdown with less than three minutes left in the third quarter making the score 23-6.

Michael Cleary, Michie head coach, said while Ramer is a talented team, Michie played a really good second half but by then it was too late to make a difference in the score.

In the fourth quarter Ramer took the win with two more touchdowns ending the game 34-8.

Ramer Coach Jeremy Blakely said his defense played well earning three turnovers.

“Michie is a really good offensive team,” said Blakely, “So I was pleased to leave there with a win.”

Taylor brings home the medal against the Tigers

Bobcat golfer Briley Taylor took the medal for the best score while overall the Bobcats tied for first and the Lady Bobcats placed second against Bolivar and Lexington last Thursday at Bolivar Country Club.

The Bobcats tied for first with Bolivar in the nine-hole match with a score of 162 ahead of Lexington’s 178. Taylor was the low score medalist overall with a score of 38, followed by his fellow Bobcats John Hunter Powers, 40, Matt Chandler, 41, Dilan Miller, 43, Clay Rankin, 44, and Hunter Foote, 45.

The Lady Bobcats came in second with a score of 96 behind Lexington, 83, and Bolivar, 107. Valerie Jones was the lowest scorer for the Lady Bobcats with a 47 followed by Kelly Beth Ernest, 49, Sarah Stanfield, 55, and Kristen Rowsey, 59.

Last Tuesday, the Bobcats took second in a match against Hardin County and Lexington in Corinth, Miss.

The Bobcat boys finished with an overall score of 337 behind Hardin County, 323, and followed

by Lexington, 365.

Powers was the lead scorer with a final score of 78 followed by Taylor, 86, Chandler, 86, Miller, 87, Rankin, 87, and Foote, 89.

The Lady Bobcats finished with an overall score of 196, second place against Lexington’s 173.

Ernest was the lead scorer with a final score of 95 compared to Stanfield who finished with a 101.

Coach Adam Day thanked Shiloh Ridge Golf Club in Corinth for the opportunity to play the 18-hole match.

The Lady Bobcats placed first in a match against Lexington and Bolivar at Woodland Hills Golf & Country Club in Pinson, Tenn. last Monday.

The Lady Bobcats overall score was 89, one point ahead of Lexington, 90, with Ernest contributing a score of 43 ahead of Stanfield, 46, and Jones, 48.

The Bobcats didn’t fare as well coming in third with an overall score of 165 compared to Southside, 159, Bolivar, 164, and Lexington, 166.

Dampeer said at one point in the game the win could have gone either way.

He said last Friday was another game where the Bobcat linemen just didn’t measure up to their opponents in size and it takes it’s toll.

Thousands head to McNairy County area for unprecedented week of fun

This Saturday, McNairy County will be at the epicenter of a spectacular week of events, world class entertainment, thrill rides and much, much more. Entertainment options will abound, beginning this weekend as a perfect storm of regionally known events will make an unprecedented 10-day stretch of non-stop fun.

With more than a half dozen festivals, fairs and events slated in McNairy, Hardin and Alcorn counties expected to bring in tens of thousands of visitors, fun will be literally just around the corner from 64-45 intersection near the city park in Selmer. In fact, the Selmer City Park will serve as a starting point and grand finale for many attending the event marathon with 5-2-1-0 day beginning the week’s celebration this Saturday and the 18th Annual Broomcorn Festival closing out the week Sept. 21.

Other events, packed into the incredible week of entertainment are the 14th Annual Daryl Worley Tennessee River Run in Savannah, Tenn. and a triple dose of weeklong county fairs in McNairy, Hardin and Alcorn counties.

5-2-1-0 Day in the Park (Sept. 14 - Selmer, Tenn.)

McNairy County will kick off the week-long celebration with 5-2-1-0 Day in the Park this Saturday from 9 a.m.-noon at the Selmer City Park. With more unhealthy food available this week than someone could shake a fried Oreo at, this family event could not have come at a better time. 5-2-1-0 is a perfect way to begin the week’s festivities The stated goal of the event is “Using the 5-2-1-0 Initiative to Promote Healthy Lifestyles,” The event aims to promote physical activity, good nutrition and healthy choices.

This free event, sponsored by the McNairy County Health Council and United Healthcare, activities will include a two-mile fun run/walk around the track, health exhibits, pedal cars, football and basketball toss, games, party jumpers and trampoline, zumba, yoga and aerobics demonstrations, door prizes, etc.

In addition “Walk Teams” from all agencies, businesses, worksites, community groups, churches, etc. are encouraged to walk together and enjoy the day.

This event will be a great way to burn off the extra calories in advance and learn how to make healthy choices before being confronted by hundreds of fried food vendors at the area’s other events.

Darryl Worley’s 12th Annual Tennessee River Run (Sept. 12-14 - Savannah, Tenn.)

Darryl Worley’s Tennessee River Run is a multi-day event with scheduled activities in both Hardin and McNairy counties, and has became known as one of the best annual events West-Tennessee has to offer.

This year’s TRR, presented by Bumpus Harley-Davidson, will bring Ronnie Milsap to downtown Savannah this Saturday. Milsap, whose hit songs include “Smoky Mountain Rain,” “It Was Almost Like a Song,” “(There’s) No Gettin’ Over Me,” “Stranger in My House,” “Any Day Now” and dozens more, will join Worley and special guests Brandon Lay, Jami Grooms and Donica Knight.

In discussing the Tennessee River Run, Worley said, “We’ve continued to bring in great entertainment and hold a variety of events for people all around my home town. We have worked to refine it in ways that bring in even more for the charity, which is the bottom line.”

Through TRR proceeds, Worley was able to make a final $200,000 payment in 2012 to the local cancer treatment center bearing his name, paying off the debt completely.

Through his work, Worley has become known as a local hero raising money for his cancer charity, while producing chart-topping hits and constantly showing his devotion to our troops which he has visited multiple times participating in USO tours in combat zones world-wide.

portant voices as it moved from its rural roots into mainstream modern entertainment. Steeped in the mountain music of the North Carolina hills and schooled in classical piano, he found inspiration in a variety of music from early in his life. Milsap said that even as he mastered Beethoven and Mozart, his heart belonged to hardcore country and rhythm-and-blues music he heard from powerful radio stations in Nashville.

He explained that its earthy sounds about life and love provided an impoverished, blind boy with a connection to a world beyond the harsh reality of his daily existence. Following those humble beginnings, his success with dozens of hits and albums has spanned generations.

The Saturday night concert is the grand finale after a few days of Tennessee River Run events. The Darryl Worley and Friends Songwriters in the Round Gala will be held Thursday, on the lawn of the historic home of Savannah Mayor Bob Shutt and his wife. Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m., with music beginning at 7 p.m.

The TRR Golf Tournament will be held Friday at Shiloh Golf Course in Adamsville. The 5K run, motorcycle poker run and arts and crafts fair are scheduled for Saturday..

Proceeds from the Tennessee River Run fund the Darryl Worley Foundation. The foundation, a 501 (c3) public benefit corporation, has existed since 2002 to serve people in the Mid-South — directly helping individuals in need and serving others through nonprofits, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center and Darryl Worley Cancer Treatment Center. Tickets for Saturday’s concert are available at the Darryl Worley Foundation Office at 325 Main St. in Downtown Savannah, Hardin County Convention and Visitors Bureau, all banks in Hardin County and Bumpus Harley-Davidson in Jackson. Individuals can pay with a credit card by calling (866) 484-3877. Tickets for the concert are $30 until the day of the show and $35 at the gate for adults.

Children six and younger can enter free with a paying adult. Tickets for those seven to 12 are $15, and admission for teens 13 to 18 is $20. Gates will open at 3 p.m.

McNairy, Hardin and Alcorn county fairs (Sept. 16-21 – Selmer, Savannah, Tenn. & Corinth, Miss.)

This year, the 2013 McNairy Co. Fair is scheduled for Sept. 16-21 and new Jaycees President Allen Knight promised a fresh feel to the annual fair to accompany its move from mid-summer.

Knight said that the fair was in September years ago and that the move would hopefully provide better weather and draw larger crowds back to the event which was plagued by storms in 2012.

This year the fair coincides with both the Broomcorn Festival and McNairy Central High School’s Homecoming.

Along with the move the Jaycees have went after a top level carnival company for the midway and will be hosting new events and bringing back old favorites.

The event will begin Monday with canned goods and arts & crafts entries accepted for competition for a $5 entry fee from 5-6:30pm. Also on Monday the first half of the Fairest of Fair Pageant will begin at 7pm for 0-7 year olds.

Entry forms can be picked up at Hawk & Co. or Pats Café in Selmer, TN. $35.00 in advance $50.00 at door On Tuesday the Fairest of Fair Pageant starts at 7pm for 8-21 years olds and the midway opens for thrill seekers.

On Sept 18, the 18 and under Talent Contest starts at 7pm. Sound equipment will be provided, however entrants must bring their own CD. On Sept 19 the annual crowd favorite Demolition Derby starts at 7pm. Entries must arrive early to be properly inspected by 6 p.m. there is a $30.00/ entry fee. On Sept 20, Redemption will headline the concert playing their brand of contemporary Christian music performed by the Highlands Church of Finger, and the Kennedy’s will be back for round two of their antique appraisals.

On the fair’s final night, USA Championship Wrestling from Nashville will perform and the Canned Goods and Arts & Crafts Contest winner results will be announced with recovery at 6pm.

The Gate fee is $2.00/ person, which is waived for contestants. Armbands are $15 per person. All Food venders must be approved and the vendor fee is $75 for the week with power or $50 for unpowered sites.

18th Annual Broomcorn Festival

(Sept. 21 - Selmer) McNairy County residents will have an opportunity to travel back to experience the sights, sounds and smells of the 19th and early 20th centuries as the 18th annual Broomcorn Festival takes over the Selmer City Park. On Sept. 21, dozens of artisans will be on hand to display their authentic old world craftsmanship to the festival’s visitors.

This year, the festival will be run in a partnership with the McNairy Regional Alliance and Arts in McNairy. The two civic organizations have paired up to run this year’s event to help the event’s founder, Jack Martin, who is helping to care for his ill wife.

Martin said that his wife, Dee Martin had been diagnosed with lung cancer and his attention this year needed to be directed toward his family. The Martin’s did receive a piece of good news on Aug. 28, however, as they learned that Dee’s cancer was now in remission. Martin said that there were other hurdles ahead, but said last week’s diagnosis was great news.

Martin will still be in attendance at this year’s Broomcorn Festival and said the festival will look much like those of year’s past. Many of the perennial vendors will return, and the festival will take time to recognize those long-time vendors who have contributed to the events overall success.

“We will recognize some of the artists that have been with us all of these years,” Martin said.

So many vendors have returned each year that Martin said they have to turn away some new vendors for lack of space.

Both MRA and AiM have a history of partnership in organizing large events such as this Ingle said. The two have worked together to bring the Rockabilly Festival to the area each year.

“We are expecting (the festival) to be bigger than ever,” Ingle said. He credited Paige Holmes, director of AiM for her work to gain new vendors.

“When this came up, it just seemed natural that MRA and AiM should work together on it,” Ingle said. “Certainly it falls within their scope with the artistic side of it, and both groups are interested in promoting things from a tourism aspect. It just seemed like something we should do.”

Ingle said there was little discussion between the two when deciding to organize the event saying, “This is our friend. You just have to step up and help your friend.”

More than 3,000 people are expected at this year’s event.

UT Martin to honor agricultural Hall of Fame inductee Ed Jones on OCT. 4 MARTIN, Tenn. — Longtime 8th District U.S. Rep. Ed Jones left many lasting marks on Tennessee’s and the nation’s agriculture. For his accomplishments, the late congressman was honored in 2011, as he became only the 13th member of the Tennessee Agricultural Hall of Fame.

On Oct. 4, the University of Tennessee at Martin will honor this achievement with a reception and banquet as part of 2013 Homecoming Week. A reception is set for 5 p.m. in the Paul Meek Library where a replica of the congressman’s office is maintained and his congressional papers are held. A dinner and program will follow in the Duncan Ballroom of the Boling University Center. Retired U.S. Rep. John Tanner, who succeeded Jones, is the keynote speaker.

The event is open to the public at a cost of $25 per person. The reservation deadline is Sept. 27. Donations can also be made to the Ed Jones Gift Fund, which supports the university’s Ed and Llew Jones Distinguished Lecture Series. Registrations and donations can be made through the UT Martin Office of Development, 329 Hall-Moody Administration Building, Martin, TN 38238, or call 731-881-7620. The original Ed Jones Distinguished Lecturer Series began in 1989 at the university as Tennessee Sen. Al Gore Jr. participated as the first lecturer. Jones

actively supported the series until it ended in 1995. A lead gift of $12,500 in June from Farm Credit Mid-America was the first step toward endowing the lecture series, which will now also carry the congressman’s late wife’s name.

Jones, a Yorkville native, earned a two-year degree in 1932 from UT Junior College, predecessor to UT Martin, and a bachelor’s degree in 1934 from UT Knoxville. During his career, he served as a state dairy inspector, an agricultural agent for the Illinois Central Railroad, a farm radio host and was appointed Tennessee commissioner of agriculture under Gov. Gordon Browning. He is probably best known for his service from 1969-89 as U.S. representative, and he remained active in his family’s farm throughout his career.

While in Congress, Jones was a senior member of the House Committee on Agriculture during a time of change in the agriculture industry and the institutions that supported it. Notable events that occurred during his career were the Farm Strike and Tractorcade to Washington, D.C., in the late 1970s, the financial struggles of the Farm Credit System, the regulation of the futures market, and the transition of the soil and water conservation programs.

The Tennessee Agricultural Hall of Fame collection is maintained by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture at the Tennessee Agricultural Museum in Nashville.
